Fun night at Philadelphia Historic Operating Theatre for #atlasobscura/ #susurrusdin ‘The Butchering Arts with #drlindseyfitzharris and #mrs_angemi’. With #sophireaptress #timberchouse #dreadlords_tomb Repost #drlindseyfitzharris ・・・ I’m doing an event at Penn Hospital’s old surgical amphitheater tonight with #mrs_angemi, sponsored by #atlasobscura! I can think of no better place to talk about my new book #TheButcheringArt, and I look forward to a lively discussion with Nicole about how medicine has changed (or not, as the case may be) since the 19th century. Operating theaters such as this one, built in the first half of the 19th century, were often filled to the rafters with curious spectators and medical students who dragged with them the dirt and grime of everyday life. Patients were brought into the theater and cut open without any anesthetic - like poor 12-year-old Henry Pace, who had a leg removed in the 1820s and was so lucid, that he remembered afterwards counting six strokes of the saw before his leg fell off into the hands of the surgeon.
