Holographic Universe: New Research Support It

Holographic universe is an idea since the 90s. The idea represents the assumption of the universe where are the all information that makes up our 3-D ‘reality’ is contained in a 2-D surface on its boundaries. To be simpler, it is similar to watching a 3-D film in a cinema. We see the pictures as having height, width and crucially, depth—when in fact it all originates from a flat 2-D screen. This hypothesis is quite difficult to prove, but the group of scientists from Canada, Italy and United Kingdom conducted a study which final results support this idea.

The UK, Canadian and Italian study has provided what researchers believe is the first observational evidence that our universe could be a vast and complex hologram.

The Holographic Principle

The idea comes from black hole physicist. From some reason, the holographic principle is widely understood that we are not physically real. Still, that is not true. The basic principle is like a hologram on a credit card. That means the Universe requires just two dimensions and only looks three-dimensional to us because it acts like a giant hologram. Explained by the words of physicist Leonard Susskind: “It asserts that a volume of space can be thought of as encoded on a boundary to it – such as an observer-dependent gravitational horizon – and therefore needs one less dimension than it appears to need.”

The UK, Canadian and Italian researchers investigate irregularities in the cosmic microwave background and tested a series of holographic models. The models were compared with the observations of an early universe and result suggested that hundred thousand years after the Big Bang everything was being projected into three dimensions from a two-dimensional boundary. The “problem” with this observation is that the models fit perfectly only when the Universe is up to 10 degrees wide.  This means that evidence supports holographic principle only at the young phases of Universe, but we can’t claim the same for today’s Universe.

Although study gives some glimpse of the Universe hologram story, there is a lot of research ahead. This evidences may be a step closer to the reconciliation of the theory of relativity and quantum theory.
