help how do i come up with discussion questions that make students actually think and engage rather than sit in fear/uncertainty or simply react?
#personal#pedagogy#i mean. i prefer that they react than sit there and say/do nothing#but also i would prefer they actually think critically instead of either of those#and i know it's my responsibility to model that#but how do i move from modeling to getting them to practice it?#part of it is--i think--the issue that we are still getting to know each other#they don't fully know what i'm like yet#but also part of it is just... i don't know how to make good discussion qs#i can throw passages up on the projector till the cows come home but if i don't have effective prompts they just sit there and stare#it's been so long since i've been in an undergraduate class i don't know that i remember how the good ones run#anyway. any advice welcome

#dylan says things#went to an Iron and Wine concert tonight and it was great#they had these really cool projections that were fully done by two people on stage with a bunch of paper cutouts#and three of those old-school projectors#it ruled#and the opening act was also really good#Amythyst Kiah she was great#i love it when i dont know the opener and then they're really good so i get to find new music to listen to#and Iron and Wine itself was great as well. i didnt actually know what the singer looked like before#but the second he walked on I was like. Exactly. That is exactly what the Iron and Wine guy is supposed to look like. Good job dude.#coming back home for the summer is so fun because my parents love to go to concerts and they also have good taste in music#so I get to so many fun concerts during the summers#We went to see Vampire Weekend this tuesday and then Iron and Wine today#plus we're seeing the Decemberists later this summer#it's like average of 2-4 concerts a summer it's great
