Bespoke Binny “I didn’t start out with the intention of starting a business, that was never the plan. I was working as a CBT therapist in the NHS – it’s quite a demanding job and I didn’t really have any hobbies outside of work so I decided that in terms of work-life balance I should get a hobby. Something I always wanted to do was to learn how to sew, so I started taking evening sewing classes after work once a week. Bespoke Binny “Bespoke speaks for itself - I still make bespoke but probably a bit less now, but at the beginning it was very bespoke. Binny is actually a play on one of my middle names. My mum's family are originally from Ghana and I have a Ghanaian name which is Obenewa, and my mum in particular always used to shorten it to Binny, so it’s like a nickname.” - Natalie Manima, Founder ‘Bespoke Binny’. At the intersection of Africa and home décor, you’ll find ‘Bespoke Binny’ a London-based store that sells handmade African print homeware, clothing and décor. When the African inspired homeware designer Natalie Manima initially started ‘Bespoke Binny’ it was not supposed to be a business. Sewing was therapeutic for her whilst she juggled the intensity of managing a busy job in the NHS and caring for her ill mother who she is very close to. From her background as a ‘CBT’ therapist Manima realised the importance of self-care. Using the craft of sewing to make cushions and lamp shades from African wax print gave Manima a new lease on life. After receiving compliments about the things she was making for her home Manima decided to try a few craft markets. Her business has grown exponentially since 2013. Half-Ghanian half-Jamaican ‘Bespoke Binny’ creator Manima is a prolific CEO. The mother and business-owner holds three degrees, including a masters and Ph.D, while working as a part-time ‘cognitive behavioural therapist’. Being of Ghanaian descent, the African inspired homeware designer Manima grew up being surrounded by vibrant colours and prints, which she found to be uplifting, as a child.
