Mastering the Art of Carp Fishing with Wafters

As an avid carp angler and a regular on our YouTube channel, I've developed a particular fondness for using wafters as hookbaits. Their effectiveness is unmatched, consistently outperforming other bait presentations. The key lies in their buoyancy, which enhances every aspect of your rig's final few centimeters. This includes how the rig lands, the bait's positioning near the lakebed, and its efficiency in hooking carp. In this detailed exploration, I'll delve into the reasons behind the effectiveness of wafters and share my personal strategies for using wafter hookbaits to land impressive carp.

The Superiority of Wafters

The buoyancy of wafters is a game-changer in rig mechanics. When balanced with your rig components, wafters kick away from the lead upon hitting the lakebed, immediately showcasing their advantage over bottom baits. This results in a perfectly flat presentation with excellent separation from the lead arrangement. As demonstrated in the Korda Underwater series, semi-buoyant hookbaits paired with stiff-ish hooklinks consistently achieve ideal rig positioning. Additionally, wafters allow your rig to reset after encounters with nuisance fish or crayfish, which are increasingly common in UK waters. This means your rig spends more time effectively 'fishing'.

My Preferred Rig with Wafters

I prefer a setup where the hook lies flat on the lakebed, with the wafter perched just off the hook's shank. This subtle presentation is especially effective in busy waters where carp are bombarded with bright pop-ups. Achieving the right balance is crucial, and for me, a size 4 Gardner Rigga CVR Hook is ideal when using wafters in solid bags. A short, supple hooklink of about 4 inches, housed in a solid bag filled with OG Mini Mix Pellets, completes this rig. When not using solid bags, I opt for a variant of the Illusion D rig, favored by anglers like Tom Maker, with a Nash Pinpoint Twister hook and a large D on the shank. Both rigs have provided me with exceptional hookholds and confidence in various fishing scenarios.

Baiting Strategy with Wafters

My baiting approach often involves a mix of boilie crumb and pellets, creating a bed that carp will forage in for extended periods. Wafters are the perfect complement to this strategy, hovering just above the free offerings, neither too deep nor too conspicuous. While pop-ups have their place, I find wafters more effective in this context, particularly in solid bag setups. In these scenarios, wafters, especially in high-vis colors, act as beacons, drawing carp to the pellet mix. This tactic has been incredibly successful for me over the years.

My Go-To Wafters

When asked about my preferred wafters, I immediately recommend the OG Fish Match The Hatch Wafters. These have been a staple in my angling, effective over OG Fish Boilies or a diverse mix including particles and maggots. The development of these wafters focused on consistency in buoyancy, a crucial factor often overlooked by anglers. For a more visually appealing option, I turn to the Magic Bean Wafters, ideal for quick bites or casting to showing fish. If you haven't tried wafters in your fishing, I strongly encourage you to do so and witness a significant increase in your catch rates.

Mit Grinnerknoten zum Angelerfolg

So unbedeutend euch der Grinnerknoten an einer Montage möglicherweise auch erscheinen mag, meist ist genau er es, der über Erfolg oder Misserfolg beim Angeln entscheidet. Ob ihr einen kapitalen Fang macht oder euch dieser durch die Lappen geht, weil die Schnur reißt, könnt ihr also ganz einfach beeinflussen, indem Ihr mit Grinnerknoten angelt, insbesondere dann, wenn ihr geflochtene Schnüre verwendet.

Erfinder und Namensgeber „Grinnerknoten“

Erfunden wurde der Grinner-Knoten von Norman Duncan, weshalb er im englischen Sprachraum neben „Uni Knot“ auch „Duncan Loop“ genannt wird. Seine Popularität erlangte der Knoten durch eine Veröffentlichung in den 1960ern im Miami Herald.

Die Bezeichnung „Grinnerknoten“ hingegen soll vom legendären englischen Angler Richard Walker stammen. So war der Grinnerknoten wohl der einzige Knoten, den dessen damals noch kleiner Sohn selbstständig binden konnte. Die Freude nach vollbrachter Arbeit in dem Gesicht des Kindes zeigte sich jedes Mal in einem breiten Grinsen und regte Richard Walker wohl dazu an, den Knoten nach „grinsen“, im Englischen „to grin“ zu benennen.

Aufgrund ihrer dÜnnen, weichen und geschmeidigen Beschaffenheit und ihrer enorm hohen Tragfähigkeit erfreuen sich geflochtete Vorfachschnüre in der Angler-Community zunehmend an Popularität.

Die einzige Tücke dieser Schnüre ist ihre ausgesprochene Glattheit. Deshalb ist es umso wichtiger, die beiden Knoten an Haken und Wirbel mit ganz besonderer Sorgfalt zu binden, damit die Gefahr, dass diese sich bei Belastung lösen, minimiert wird.

Grinnerknoten

Wie gut ein bestimmter Knoten bei sauberer, sorgfältiger Bindung hält, kann objektiv gemessen werden. Der Grinnerknoten besitzt eine nahezu 100%ige Schnurtragkraft, er ist vielseitig einsetzbar und zudem auch noch praktisch rutschfest, weshalb er der perfekte Knoten für schlüpfrige Geflechtsvorfächer ist.

Wollt ihr mit Grinnerknoten angeln, so könnt ihr mit ihm nicht nur die Angelschnur mit dem Angelhaken, Ösen, Gewichte oder Ringen verknüpfen, sondern auch die Angelschnur an der Rolle befestigen. Ihr könnt mit ihm auch die Verbindung Backing oder Vorfach an eine Fliegenschnur schaffen.

Knotet die Schlaufe an euren Kunstköder beim Angeln mit Grinnerknoten nicht ganz zu, d. h. , bindet eure Montage nicht ganz fest, denn dann kann sich der Köder freier hin- und herbewegen und wirkt lebhafter. Bei akuter starker Zugbelastung gibt euch eine derart gebundene Schlaufe einen Puffereffekt, indem sie sich zusammenzieht.

Auch könnt ihr zwei Angelschnüre miteinander verbinden, indem ihr zwei Grinnerknoten bindet.

Tipps zum Angeln mit Grinnerknoten

Macht euren Grinnerknoten im Idealfall mit fünf Wicklungen und wickelt das Vorfach doppelt um das Öhr, so habt ihr die Tragkraft des Knotens wohl nahezu optimiert. Bitte achtet dabei insbesondere darauf, dass sich die beiden Umwicklungen am Öhr keinesfalls kreuzen, da ihr sonst ein Strangulieren der Schnur riskieren würdet.

Ein Angeln mit Grinnerknoten ist sowohl beim leichten Spinnfischen als auch beim schweren, sportlichen Pilken. Er ist einfach zu binden und dennoch absolut fest, belastbar und zuverlässig.

This week we look at the tackle we know that will be released this year.

Even before the fishing show season has started for the year some tackle companies have already let slip on some new and exciting carp gear set to be released in 2018.

Let’s take a look at some new tackle set for this year…

Nash Pinpoint hooks and hook sharpening tool range

Working closely in partnership with Pinpoint, Nash are set to release a brand new set of hooks and hook sharpening accessories. Nash claim the hooks are lighter, much sharper out of the packet and up to 50% stronger.

We are all very excited for this release and are looking forward to testing these hooks out on the bank.

Look out for reviews of this range where we will undoubtedly give them a serious testing to let you know if they are really worth the money.

Ridgemonkey Deep Tray

The Ridgemonkey Deep Tray is designed specifically to fit the 30 litre RidgeMonkey Modular Bucket System XL and featuring folding support legs, the Deep Tray is over twice the capacity of the regular XL tray and opens up even more storage options for the Modular Bucket System XL.

A simple idea but a smart move by RidgeMonkey giving you a lot of options for bait storage and perfect for longer trips on the bank.

Gardner Specialist Sharpened Mugga hooks

According to Gardner the new range of specialist sharpened Mugga hooks are hand sharpened to perfection by Jason Hayward.

Jason has created a reputation over the last few years as a master of sharpening hooks to perfection and now is working with Gardner to create this specialist hook range.

The hooks are looking to be sold at a higher price point than regular carp hooks so are they really worth the £7.99 retail price? Look for our review of these hooks very soon.

Ridgemonkey hooklink range

Not much is known about the Ridgemonkey hooklink range but we know they will be releasing three colours in the range, weed green, gravel and clay (we will update this when we know more details).

We’re looking forward to this range and hope Ridgemonkey are bringing us something new and not just another hooklink range.

Solar Tackle are set to release their new P1 indicator heads this year.

KODEX are set to rest their new “intelligent” butt rod rests this year.

Ridgemonkey unconfirmed releases

For the past month we have seen the Ridgemonkey team let slip on tackle they’re testing and currently in development.

A few photos have been posted of Ridgemonkey pop up pots, these could simply be stickers on the pots or Ridgemonkey working on a special pop up range which will be their first dive in to the carp bait world.

Others photo have been spotted of a possible rig tool range by Ridgemonkey too.
