Journey to the West (Xi You Ji) is exactly like that with the 5th member (yes, they're actually five), the White Dragon Horse (Bai Lùng Ma).

It's a literal dragon, sapient and sentient, capable of shapeshifting, sent on the journey because he managed to set the underwater palace of his dad on fire (don't ask me how). He's the second to arrive after Wukong, for a fact, even before Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, and ambushes him and Xuanzang by a river, eats Xuanzang's horse, and Guanyin basically goes "if you break it you replace it", making said dragon Xuanzang's new steed - it's not like a curse or anything, he can still transform into a dragon at will, or even take other forms...

And is then vaguely relevant at some tiny points, like transforming into a beautiful maiden to distract whatever demon by a sword dance on one occasion, but keeps being forgotten by the story.

You'd think a freakin' goddamn firebreathing dragon would've been useful at times, but nope ! He mostly stays a horse, even if the party is captured and going "ooooh, what are we gonna do ???" and he's just brought to a normal horsestable, just chilling.

((In my free every once a week, if I can manage to squeeze it into my week, I like to go out into the country side and visit a horsestable. When I go out there, as a hobby I like to do horseback riding outdoors. It's one of my physical activities I like to do and I've been doing it ever since I was nine! Horses have always been my favorite animal, and I am super lucky I get to work with them a ton when they can be super sweet with a bit of treats.))
