He works his jaw, taking a breath as he does so. It's been a long time since he lost her, but the sting is still there. Still...raw. Especially holding items like this.

"Sorry, Da." He waves her concern away, sniffling back the sadness.

"Want it? I bet if you managed to track down some film, it'd work. Maybe Rachel would think it's charming," he says with a wink. Jo rolls her eyes, but takes the proffer camera from his hands.

"Right!" He says, clapping his hands together. "Clearly that closet's been neglected for too long. Here, I'll help sort through some of thing. Maybe we can actually get it organized."

Jo laughs as she sets the camera, now secured back in its case, on the coffee table in the living room. "Very optimistic of you. That's a weekend long chore at the least."

Hob lifts the lid on the nearest box and groans internally at the mess of clutter and paper inside. Jo's probably right, but that doesn't mean he'll give her the satisfaction. "Well, we can get as far as we can then. Maybe we'll even find that old bag while we're at it."

A few weeks later, he gets a letter in the mail with a small stack of photos of Jo and Rachel taken on that very same Kodiak. Hob sticks them on the fridge with a smile next to the old photos they'd found all the way back from 1937 of him and Peggy.

You didn’t move as the city streets flashed by. You stayed huddled against the car door; paralyzed and petrified. You couldn’t even look at the man next to you as he kept one hand on the wheel. 

You felt his gaze at every stop and his hand lingered ominously between your seats. You touched your chin where he’d pressed the muzzle; a lump lodged firmly in your throat.

He passed through the gates of his extravagant estate that loomed before you like a pale giant. The engine hushed and his door opened and closed. As he opened yours, you nearly fell out, your seatbelt loose and forgotten. He caught you and pulled up straight.

“On your feet, princess,” he lulled and slung his arm around your shoulders. “You got lots of time to get ready for dinner. I just gotta talk to my chef.” 

He led you up the steps and a man in a dark suit moved to open the door. Peter nodded at him and carried on inside. 

“Any problems, my security is always here to help…” he ushered you towards the stairs, “and I can keep an eye out myself.”

His gaze ventured above you and you turned to follow his attention. You squinted and the nearly imperceptible lens gleamed back at you. The camera was set into the wall sconce and was only obvious if one were looking for it. Your imagination stormed as you wondered how many were scattered throughout the mansion.

“Go,” he nudged you back to him, “upstairs. Our room.” He caressed your chin. “I was saving the surprise but the closet just to the left of the bed. Put on something nice.” He leaned in and pecked your lips. “I’ll expect you in about…” he drew away and checked his watch, “One hour, princess.”

Your eyes began to water as you stared back at him. You nodded and turned away slowly. You grabbed the railing and lifted your foot. You climbed in dread and at the top, you looked back to find Peter still watching you. You shivered and turned down the hallway.

You retraced the steps you’d taken the day before. The bedroom decked in black and white greeted you on the other side of the door. You shut it carefully and hesitated as you faced the room. You crossed to the glass doors that opened onto the balcony and looked out across the vast yard. You’d never felt so empty.

After a moment, you turned back and went to the closet. It was a whole other room hidden behind the bedroom. You stepped inside and looked around at the array of dark suit jackets, pressed pants, and steamed shirts. A shelf of carefully folded socks and ties over a set of six narrow drawers. A bench ran below the higher shelves with polished shoes lined up across them and you sat as brighter colours caught your eyes.

A dozen dresses in varying shades of pink, red, purple, and black, made of sequins, prints, velvets. Below, another cubby with at least six sets of heels and to the right, a glass cabinet of jewelry. You sat forward and held your head in your hands. It was some dystopian romance; twisted and terrifying.

When you found the strength to sit up, you were still trembling. The adrenaline remained as hot as ever. You closed your eyes and saw the gun, heard that awful click. You stood before you lost your will entirely. You took the black velvet dress with the tiny gems set like stars into the fabric.

You changed in silence. The dress was snug and hugged your form perfectly. You took a pair of black heels and bent to shove your toes into the pointed shoes. You stood and considered the diamond necklaces, studded cuffs, and dangling earrings. You didn’t touch any of them as you went back into the bedroom.

You swept into the bathroom and startled yourself in the mirror. You saw the fear, the desperation in your feature. Your face felt brittle. You fixed your hair as best you could. There was a finely organized kit of make-up and accessories nestled on the broad counter beside an electric razor and leather zip-up bag.

You thought of keeping your face bare. You thought of Peter and the rage in his eyes as you came out of the station. If he was disappointed, he would let you know. Appease him, that was all you could do. You reached for the mascara and blinked away your terror.

You weren’t certain of the time when you finished. You went back to the bedroom and looked out again onto the green grass. The gates were closed. A dead end. You couldn’t turn back, you couldn’t bypass it, you had to face it. There was no choice. Peter would get whatever he wanted and it would be easier if you just gave it to him.

You winced as the door opened behind you and you turned to face Peter. A smirk slowly spread across his face as he saw you and he raised a brow. He waved you to him and licked his lips.

“Gorgeous, princess,” he said, “dinner’s waiting for us.”

You tried to smile but your face was stiff and your lips quivered. As you neared him, Peter took your hand and pulled you close. He swayed you against him as he looked you in the eyes. His gaze flicked down to your mouth. He kissed you and purred.

“I don’t know if I’ll make it through dinner,” he whispered as he drew away. “you look delicious.”

You swallowed as you searched for your voice. “Thank you,” you murmured.

He winked and parted, keeping a hold on your hand as he tugged you through the door. Down the hallway and the stairs, across the foyer then through to the dining room. The lights were low and the table was set for two. You sat across from Peter and a man in all black offered you wine.

You shifted awkwardly as you waited for your glass to be poured and then Peter’s. He watched you as the man told him that dinner would be served shortly. You took the cloth napkin and spread it over your lap to keep from fidgeting.

“You’ll get used to it,” he said and you glanced at him. “the staff. Usually just a maid to keep things tidy and the chef for mealtimes. Some hired hands occasionally for the garden and the pool…” He squared his shoulders. “You’ll never have to lift a finger… well, in some contexts.”

You pressed your lips together. You were speechless. How had you gone from the certain doom of the alleyway to the luxury of this ridiculous house?

“You okay, princess?” He asked.

“I…” Your lips parts but you stopped as you heard another enter. 

You waited patiently as covered plates were set down and uncovered with some explanation of the meal you didn’t hear. The server left and you stared at the chicken breast drizzled with some fancy sauce. You raised your eyes cautiously.

“You were going to shoot me. Am I supposed to be okay?” You asked.

He laughed, a soft roll in his throat. “I’ve done a lot worse to others for less.”

“So what? I should thank you?” You gripped the edge of your seat and tried not to show how afraid you truly were.

“Princess, I’ve treated you kindly. Dressed you up, taken you out, made you cum.” He winked and looked you over vulgarly, “all I’m asking is for your loyalty.”

You picked up your fork and looked at your plate. There was no arguing; no choice. Only what he wanted.

You shook your head and carefully slipped your heels off. You picked them up and went to the closet. Peter followed you inside as you replaced the shoes in their cubby. 

“Thanks,” you said quietly as you went to the row of shirts and looked them over. 

He came up behind you and ran his hands over your shoulder, sliding the straps down your arms. As they fell limp, he reached out and took a plain white shirt from the bunch. He pressed the hanger to your chest and leaned close. “That should fit you nicely.”

You took the hanger and parted from him. You felt him watching you as you shimmied out of the dress and turned your back to him. You unhooked your bra and quickly buttoned up the shirt over your panties. 

You heard his soft footsteps as he closed in on you. His fingers tickled along the hem of the shirt and delved beneath. He grabbed the side of your panties and tore them down your legs. You flinched and stepped out of them. He gathered up your clothes, one piece at a time, admiring the warmth of your body still radiating from the fabric as he did.

He left you and slowly, you crossed the closet. He dumped the heap into the hamper and turned back as he took off his shirt. He dropped it into the basket without looking and continued to undress. You lowered your head and paced listlessly around the room.

“Lay down, princess,” he said as he came around the bed, “you’ll need your sleep.”

You stopped and peeked up at him. You wordlessly approached the bed from the other side and climbed up after him. He grabbed your wrist and pulled you to him, pressing your head against his chest as he leaned against the plush pillows. You shivered and his hand glossed over the curve of your body.

“I already took care of Halle. As far as she’s concerned, you’re spending the night. Not a lie, is it?” He said coolly as his hand moved up and down your back, “and tomorrow, you’ll forget about your work. Call whoever you need but you won’t have time for all that. Not for a while.”

“I… can’t do that,” you breathed.

“You work from home.” He said evenly.”

“How… yeah but that doesn’t mean I don’t have deadlines.”

“Find someone else to pick up the slack. You’ll have time to do so before we arrive.” He said sternly. “You’re clever, you’ll figure it out.”

“Shhh,” he slid his arm out from under you and rolled over to shut off the lamp. He nestled against you again as he turned onto his side. “It’s taking everything I got not to keep you up all night.”

You let him embrace you and closed your eyes. You found it hard to relax as your body remained rigid and your nerves skittered through you. You let out a shaky breath and grasped for sleep. It was your only escape but it seemed just as unlikely as any other.

Peter drove as you held your phone to your ear and listened to Selene rant from the other end. You rubbed your eye socket and yawned as you nodded along with her complaints. She was right, you were leaving her in the lurch and you would owe her, however your debt to the man beside you was more pressing.

“Yes, it is, but so was your spring vacay and I covered you, didn’t I?” you pleaded. You felt bad for bringing up the favour but a work relationship hardly mattered against the steel hidden beneath Peter’s jacket.

“Fine, fine, I guess I owe you,” she resigned, “I’ll let Melinda know.”

“Thanks,” the line died abruptly as Selene grumbled again and you swiped away the window.

“Yeah,” you answered quietly and crossed your legs, leaning heavily on the door as you watched the scenery without, “I still have to get some things done myself, I can’t just drop everything.”

You took his warning and pressed your lips together. You tickled your cheek with your fingertips as you sank into silence. He was headed upstate, you knew that much, but you didn’t know much beyond the stinking city.

You closed your eyes and stifled a yawn behind your fist. He had you up early but you hadn’t really slept at all. After the few hours you managed, you woke up to his hand under your shirt, nestled along your vee. He let you go without venturing further but promised you more by the end of the day.

He packed a bag for you from the spacious closet and as you descended, he was presented with several shopping bags from which he picked a few more pieces to add to the haul. He drove you to your apartment to grab your toiletries and allowed you your tablet for work purposes. 

You explained to Halle you were going away and she listened with envious curiosity as she watched Peter. She slipped in an “I told you so” and you withheld your bitterness. It was all her fault and you could at least be glad that you’d be away from her.

You mind lingered as you wished to be anywhere but in that car. You looked over at your keeper as he drove, his brown eyes distant as he watched the road. He didn’t wear his usual tailored suit, instead a button-up with a few buttons undone and a pair of pale slacks with some expensive loafers. A gold chain peeked out around his neck and his large gold ring caught the sunlight.

You sat back and closed your eyes. You were uncomfortable in the short lilac skirt, the flare of it had it slipping up often. Your top was pure white and nearly see-through over the bubblegum coloured bra. It wasn’t your style but Peter had been meticulous in his selection. The chunky heels were better suited to someone at least a decade older but he insisted they suited the look. 

You wrinkled your forehead as you pondered on his eye for detail; likely he only went for what showed the most skin. You hated that. Even when you were a care-free co-ed, you never had the courage to flaunt your thighs so openly. You planted an elbow against the door and the seat belt strained across you.

“Tired?” he asked above the low hum of the radio, “I think a nice glass of wine will help when we get there.”

“Just a little,” you murmured and stayed as you were. He had to keep reminding you he was there, that you were trapped with him.

“Another hour,” he said, “then we can settle in and relax.”

You nodded and his hand trailed along the hem of your skirt again. He squeezed your leg and growled. His hand remained even as you shifted and he pulled your legs down from over the other. His fingertips tapped along your inner thigh and traced circles along your skin. You trembled and he chuckled.

“I know, I know,” he said, “I’m having a hard time waiting too.”

The beach house stood above the shoreline, a short deck stretched over the water and a balcony opened up to a sparkling pool at the rear. It was unlike anywhere you’d ever been before, even that cottage you’d stayed at for your sister’s bachelorette. It was the type of lifestyle porn you saw in magazines or in those reality shows about wealthy old wasps.

Just like his house near the city, there was a staff ready and willing to tend to your every desire. You wanted little but that you knew you couldn’t have. Peter kept his arm around you as he showed you around the exorbitant interior and ended the tour in the bedroom. Your bags were already waiting on the bed.

“How about a swim?” he said as he unzipped the Louis Vuitton duffle and pulled out a red one piece and laid it out on the mattress, “I’ve been waiting to see this on you.”

You reluctantly neared and flipped it over. There was no ass, only a thin strip that would have your skin burning with embarrassment. You picked it up by the thong and squinted.

“You don’t have anything… with a bit more fabric?”

“You’ve got a nice ass, you should show it off,” he purred as he pulled you to him and stretched his fingers across your skirt, “princess, I like a little… bite but I thought we came to an understanding.”

You gulped as you stared into his eyes. The naturally warm brown had turned dark and foreboding. His jaw squared as he held you against him.

“Don’t bite the hand that feeds and all that,” he lowered his voice and his breath tickled your lips just as he drew you in for a hungry kiss, “let’s not have this conversation again.”

He parted and left you to stare at the red bathing suit. He rolled his shoulders as he went to the door, “I’ll meet you by the pool, I gotta make sure everything’s running smoothly.”

“Sure,” you muttered and lowered your chin.

He left and closed the door lightly. You undressed and laid out the disposed clothing on the bed. You shimmied into the scanty bathing suit. You felt almost naked as there was almost no back at all and the high vee threatened to show more than you wanted. You checked yourself in the slatted mirrors that hung along the wall and cringed. He would be able to see everything you tried to hide.

You took a towel from inside the attached bathroom and wrapped it around you. You ventured out through the hallways and found your way to the sliding doors that opened onto the mosaic patio. You inched over to one of the sunbathers and sat on the edge as you picked at the top of the towel.

You flinched as a shadow appeared in the open door. A man in a pale blue shirt and white cotton slacks greeted you with a tall cocktail with fruit bubbling from the bottom.

“Miss,” he set it down on the table, “compliments of Mr. Parker, he would like me to inform you he will be out shortly.”

“Thank you,” you said awkwardly and gave a weak smile.

The man left and you reached for the glass. You smelled the sweet alcohol and sipped. It made your cheek twitch and you stirred the concoction with the little plastic stick that twisted at the top.

“Princess,” Peter’s voice startled you and you looked up. You set aside the drink as he strode through the door, a silky black robe hung open over tight swimming briefs.

His stomach was tightly muscled and as he shed the extra layer, his arms were thick but wiry. He was in good shape, much better shape than you, and you tried not to stare so obviously as he tossed the robe over another chair and turned to you.

“So, you just gonna watch the water or… you gonna have some fun?” 

He neared and took your hand. He pulled you up and tugged the towel down so that it fell to your feet. He eyed you as he backed away and took you with him, turning you to check out the back. He slapped your as and laughed as you squeaked and reached back to shoo him away.

“Please,” you turned to face him, “it’s a bit…” you looked down at yourself, “it’s not much.”

“I’d rather nothing but the staff is still here,” he clung to your wrist and urged you towards the pool, “maybe later.”

You followed him down the curved steps that led under the water if only to hide your bareness beneath the surface. He guided you deeper and spun you against the wall of the pool. The tile was cool as the water swayed around you. He kept you trapped against him and brushed your nose with his.

“You really do look amazing, princess,” his hand dipped under the water and he felt along the vee of the suit, “last night…” he exhaled and pecked your lips, “it was so hard to… I was so hard.”

“Peter,” you pressed your palms to his chest.

“I wanted to wait but seeing you like this,” his fingers slid under the suit, “I can’t…”

He shoved his hand under the fabric and cupped your cunt. He held two fingers against your cunt and swirled them. You gasped and clawed at his chest. His eyes were smoky and his touch determined. He kissed you again, this time longer as his fingers slickened along your folds.

He pushed his legs between your and spread them wide as he pushed along your entrance. You clenched as he poked around and slid his finger into you. You pulled back and bit your lip. He bent his head and his mouth explored throat. You trembled and whispered a soft, ‘please…’ but he either didn’t hear you or didn’t care.

He slipped in another finger and kept his thumb firm against your clit. The swimsuit crumpled to one side and he rocked his hand as he grinded against your body. He nibbled the flesh along your neck and purred as you tensed around him.

“Princess,” he murmured and nipped at you, “you’re perfect.”

Social Portraiture Research

The term “social portraiture”, references the art of capturing a social moment, with careful attention paid to elements such as emotion, personality, as well as a possible representation of the events that led up to that particular moment.

Portraits are effective when they speak to both the informational and the social—showing, telling and inviting the imagination.

A posed or contrived portrait inevitably results in conceptual shallowness. To understand social portraiture, one also has to understand the context (personal, social, political) which led to a particular moment being captured.

Inspirational photographers are largely the ones who mastered the careful balancing act of emotion and information to create portraits which strike a chord with the viewer: Richard Avedon, William Eggleston, Nadav Kander, Milton Rogovin, and Les Krims as examples.

The word “portrait” comes from the Latin “portrahere,” translated as “to drag out, reveal, expose.” (Walker, 16). Wikipedia provides a good example of the common understanding to which these roots have developed. “A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even mood of the person.” The more rigorous Oxford English Dictionary (OED) gives several distinct definitions for “Portrait,” each with its own variants. The first, and most common, echoes Wikipedia: “A drawing or painting of a person, often mounted and framed for display, esp. one of the face or head and shoulders. Also, an engraving, photograph, etc., in a similar style.” A variant for sculpture also appears: “A statue (full size or as a bust), an effigy.

An important area of "contact" between photography and sociological research, in terms of subject matter, and to some degree, intent (e.g. charting societal change and raising social issues) is "social documentary photography". Current researchers in visual anthropology/sociology are well aware of social documentary photography and the use of the combination of photographs and text in the "documentary photo book”. There is growing interest, at least in Britain, in the history and recent development of forms of social documentary photography, by photographers, cultural critics and galleries, as indicated by publication of both newer and older work. Prominent recent photographic issues have been focused around the connections between photography, surveillance and voyeurism, etc. and the possibilities of street photography in current socio-political contexts. This tradition of social investigation and documentary reportage (PRICE, 2004) can be traced back to RIIS's photographs of the poor in New York in the late 19th century; HINE's images of work people and social conditions (c.f. with the Pittsburgh Survey) in the early 20th century; and the famous work of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in the US and other documentary in the 1930s, depicting the lives of farm workers and others.

A related documentary form is the "photo-essay" found in the photo-magazine in the inter-war years up to the early 1950s. The "pinnacle" of the "photo-book", which also broke "beyond" the "genre", was AGEE and EVANS's "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" (originally to be an article for Fortune) based on the lives of three farming families. It is a poetical, biblical, factual, descriptive, radically auto-ethnographic script which veers from the smallest aspects of the life of poor tenant farmers to profound questions of human existence. One very striking feature of the work requires comment: EVANS's photographs (including individual and group portraits) are displayed uncaptioned at the very start of the book. Another "tradition" of the "photo-book" can be identified, leading back (in particular) to the work of BRASSAI on Paris, and BRANDT on the "English", in the 1930s (BROOKMAN, 2007; CAMPANY, 2006; DELANY, 2004; POIRIER, 2005) and surrounded by a broader current of "humanistic realism". This was followed during the mid 1950s, when an ambivalent, alienated, or ironic view of social life (often transgressing photographic conventions) was offered in Robert FRANK's "travelogue" across the U.S. and William KLEIN's view of New York. This work not only pointed to social division and the gap between reality and illusion, it was also a personal account of creativity and experience. It was influential on the growth of "street photography" (with its mix of the "quirky" and "mundane") depicting urban lives, during the 1960s and 1970s. Roy E. STRYKER, who directed the photographic work of the FSA (Farm Security Administration) from 1935, was an economist who had previously made extensive use of photographs.

The work and life of Dorothea LANGE, in particular, is undergoing renewed attention and reassessment—in terms of the "aesthetics" of her photographs (i.e. according to her "realism" and "humanism"), and the "politics" of her photographs and photographic practice. Her "classic" photo-book, "An American Exodus" (1939) (with Paul TAYLOR), and her "reports from the field" are still of interest for social documentarians (e.g. the relation between photographs, and also between photographs and types of text, including quotes, description, and background or "found" materials).

The above areas of photography (social documentary, photo book, street photography, and related areas) are important sources of portraiture since they show people situated within their everyday social situations. To these "genres" can be added, for research purposes, "found" sources such as professional portraiture (in the studio and elsewhere) and informal picture-taking (by friends, families, etc). Finally, at least some mention should be made regarding the "documentary" work oral historians who have long used portrait and other photographs in the study of working lives, communities, health, migration and other areas and more recently have pioneered Web based resources.

The “white” part of this brief is vital in the success of the image, consider the ways in which control the white balance of the image, both in shooting and editing to obtain the crispest white you can for the shoot.

Explain or show diagram of how you correct white balance using your camera.

The best way to obtain the correct white balance is through the “Preset (PRE)” setting. Simply hold a white card in front of the camera lens and press the shutter button. The camera will then read the correct colour temperature of the light that gets reflected from the white card and will use it instead.

The process of changing white balance in a digital camera varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. For example, most Nikon professional cameras such as Nikon D300s/D700/D3s have a dedicated “WB” button on the top dial, while cameras such as Nikon D90 have a “WB” button on the back of the camera close to the LCD screen. So, in order to change it, all I need to do is hold the WB button with one hand, then rotate the rear dial counter-clockwise. All current Nikon DSLRs also allow you to change white balance through a menu setting.

Explain the difference between colour correction and colour grading.

Colour correction is a technical process that fixes colour issues and makes images appear as natural as possible. The idea is for colours to look clean and real, as human eyes would see them in the real world.

Colour grading is also technical, but it's more of a creative process. The colour grading process adds atmosphere and emotion to shots by colouring images in new, often unnatural ways.

Explain your editing workflow to correct colour casts.

Method 1

The “Levels Adjustment Layer” tool in Photoshop that can be used to remove and neutralise colour cast.

Method 2

When a colour cast is dominant, the “Match Colour” technique will make the biggest difference and it requires only one click.

·       Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Match Colour

·       In the window that appears, check the box for Neutralise

·       Click OK

Use the “Temp” and “Tint” sliders

To remove a colour cast manually, drag the “Temp” slider to the left to cool your photo or drag it to the right to warm it.

If you have a green or magenta tint, use the “Tint” slider to offset it. Drag the tint slider to the left to add green or drag it to the right to add magenta.

Use the “White Balance Selector”

·       The White Balance Selector, often called the eyedropper tool, can remove a colour cast with one click. Click the eyedropper icon to select the tool. Then click an area in your photo that you think should be neutral grey.

For these shots, we first set up a black backdrop with strobes set up as per the diagram above and used an LED ring light positioned first centre and straight on to the model. We also used flags to reduce the light spill from the strobes onto our subject.

For the second half of our shoot, we used a white backdrop and swapped the ring light for a soft box, positioned centre, then left then right.

I think this image works well as it has good catchlights (we used a ring light) and I like the defining shadows on the right-hand side of the models face.

What edits would best optimise this image?

This image would benefit from being colour corrected in Photoshop (I feel it is slightly warm and has too much red, so would reduce the colour temperature to make the image cooler) I would also crop the shot to cut out the small section of hand showing on the right, along with using the “Spot Heal” tool to smooth out some areas around the face and “Dodge” and “Burn” tools to lighten the teeth to make them more white and reduce some of the slightly blown out highlights on the model’s nose and chin. I also plan on adding a very small amount of “Clarity” and increasing the contrast slightly.

How have your edits improved the whiteness of your shirt?

Yes, I feel the colour of the shirt is a lot more natural looking now and closer to how it appears to the naked eye. I think the other edits, as described above, also enhance and improve the image.

           A loud clang as the door to theircell slammed shut shook them out of their stupors. Each felt a stab of fear atthe unknown, but it melted into hatred as one of the Utauran guards steppedinto the light.

           “Hn, tough crowd,” he sneered at thelooks on their faces. “Relax, I'm not here to play with you this time. You maywant to say your goodbyes to your friend, here.”

           He walked over to Briana as heartssank and stomachs felt sick. He pulled a control device out of his pocket todeactivate the electronic equipment on Briana and then started unhooking thebelt, wires, and collar first.

           “Why?” Connor asked, not reallywanting to hear the answer.

           “Seems like her heart stopped working,”he said, reaching down to unhook her feet out of the boots.

           “What?” Danny failed to keep hervoice from cracking.

           “Need for me to spell it out for you?”he straightened up with a nasty smile. “Your friend died here right in front ofyou, and neither of you even knew it.”

           The boys exchanged looks, Danny justlooked angry, tears streamed down Krys' face.

           “I swear, I will kill every one ofyou for this,” Krys growled, struggling against her bonds futilely.

The guard went down, and one morekick helped him on his way. Briana put a foot on his chest, her hard, cold eyesglaring down at his wide, shocked ones.

           “Don't you ever talk to my friendslike that,” Briana growled. “As a matter of fact, don't ever talk to them again.”

           She lifted her foot and dug her heeldeep in the Utaran’s chest. The alien's body twitched, and then stopped movingall together.

           Briana reached down for the controldevice and turned off everyone's monitors. She then grabbed the key to theircuffs and boots. Briana also took the knife that she knew every guard carried,her eyes scanning the room for a second before she deftly threw the knife intoone corner of the ceiling, breaking through the lens of the security camera.

           “Briana, you better have a damn goodexplanation,” Hunter said.

           Briana ignored him, deciding torelease Krys first since she seemed to be the least injured. The moment herhand was free she slapped Briana across the face.

           “Whatever you did, don't everdo it again,” Krys shouted, her tears still flowing.

           Briana seemed unfazed and handed herthe key. “Get your other hand free while I unlock your feet.”

           Krys only hesitated a moment,wondering briefly if Briana ever felt anything and went to unlock her hand.Once she was free she moved on to Hunter while Briana went to release Jaime.

           “What did you do?” Jaime asked,wincing as his left hand was released. It had been broken earlier and was nowseverely swollen and bruised.

           “Made my heart speed up. Eithertheir equipment picked it up as a flat-line or they figured I was a goner,”Briana explained.

           “Or they can't read human vitalswell,” Connor said.

           Hunter and Krys both worked to getConnor free.

           “You go get Danny, I got him,” Kryssaid.

           Soon they were all free, rubbing atwrists and necks and other various body parts in pain.

           The Utaurans were apparently unawareof the escape of their prisoners, but the Sentinels couldn't afford the time towonder or worry. They found an escape pod and launched it, getting as far awayas they could as fast as they could.

           Briana piloted the little ship, notonly did she insist but she was the only one to be able to figure out thecontrols. Jaime passed out almost as soon as they put him down. Krys cuddlednext to him, giving in to her exhaustion and falling asleep. Connor, Hunter,and Danny found a first aid kit and started dressing each others' wounds.

           “Hey, can you put this thing onautopilot or something?” Hunter asked. “Just long enough to patch up yourshoulder?”

           Briana's shoulder had been clawed bya guard and then it looked like it was dragged across a rough surface. Angrygashes were barely visible under a thick cake of dried blood and who knew what.

           Without waiting for an answer,Hunter moved to start, but Briana twitched away when the cloth was meremillimeters from her skin.

           “Don't,” she said.

           “But-” Hunter started to protest.

           “I'm fine, I have to navigate.”

           Hunter sighed. “Look, Bri, you haveto let me at least clean it, otherwise it's going to get infected.”

           “I have to steer.”

           “Then use your superior warriorskills to ignore me.”

           Hunter swiped at the wound lightlywith the cleaning cloth. Briana took Hunter's challenge to heart and clampedher mouth shut into a scowl, her hands tightening on the steering controls. Theship stayed steady as Hunter worked.

           Hunter found himself mesmerized byhis task. He realized that he had never been this close to Briana before, noteven during the training sessions; she had an odd way of keeping opponents asfar away from her as possible, even while grappling (which was quite anaccomplishment). Hunter felt an odd sort of satisfaction as he cleaned theblood and dirt away, revealing pale skin underneath.

           There was a sudden urge to kiss thenewly clean skin, to kiss her, to somehow take them all away from the merememory of what they went through. He leaned close to her, not noticing her bodystiffen.

           “Hunter, I need you for a second,”Danny said.

Freewell ND/PL Filters for DJI OSMO Pocket Review

The Freewell ND/PL filters for the DJI OSMO Pocket are some of the first ND/PL filter solutions available for DJI’s latest creation. I reviewed the DJI OSMO Pocket late last year and unfortunately, at the time, there were no ND filter solutions available. For professional shooters to get the most out of the OSMO Pocket they really do need to use ND filters, otherwise, you have to run excessively high shutter speeds.

  On low bitrate, inter-frame codecs running high shutter speeds can strain the codec. Less motion blur means more fine details per frame, therefore, harder decisions for the codec on what to keep and what to crunch. By sticking to the 180-degree shutter rule you will be helping the codec out.

The problem with the OSMO Pocket is you can’t adjust the f-stop, so even if you use ND filters you aren’t always going to be able to achieve correct exposure by following the 180-degree shutter rule.

What do you get?

Included in the Freewell 4K Series Bright Day Filter 4 Pack for the DJI OSMO Pocket set are the following:

ND8/PL ND16/PL ND32/PL ND64/PL

The filters come in a small protected case and you get a cleaning cloth. The filters give you between 3 to 6 stops of ND depending on which one you use. As the DJI OSMO Pocket performs better at lower ISO levels such as 100 and 200 you are probably going to find that you will primarily be using ND/PL 8 and ND/PL 16.

What are the filters made out of?

Freewell claims that the filters are made out of 16 layers of multicoated optical glass. The glass is manufactured in-house by Freewell. These are hybrid filters that combine both ND and PL properties. This is a good combination as the OSMO Pocket doesn’t have particularly good dynamic range, and it doesn’t deal well with bright reflective surfaces.  You can rotate the red ring to change the polarizing effect.

The filter frame is quite thin and despite the filters being round, they have little tabs on the side so they are a little easier to handle. The filters come with a lifetime warranty.

Weight

As the DJI Osmo Pocket utilizes a very small gimbal, you don’t want to add any excess weight to it. FREEWELL doesn’t quote any figures for how much their filters weigh. I put them on a kitchen scale and they barely moved the needle. I estimate that their weight is around 1 g (0.03 oz). This lack of weight means that using the filters shouldn’t affect the gimbals performance.

Build Quality

With the filters being tiny and weighing in at 1 g (0.03 oz) it’s quite hard to determine build quality. The filter frame feels nice and sturdy and the glass is well protected. My only gripe is that the writing on the filters is so tiny that you almost need a magnifying glass to see what ND strength you are using.

The filters also have a small red ring around them so they are easier to see. As they are so small, if they were black and you dropped one you probably wouldn’t be able to find it. I think what they should have done is color code the filters so a color represents the strength of the filter. Then all you would need to do is put labels in the box that showed the color and an ND strength. That way you would know exactly what filter you were using.

Do they attach firmly to the OSMO Pocket?

The filters magnetically attach to the front of the OSMO Pocket. Now, there is a little groove for where they attach, you just have to line the filter up and place it down. The filters do stay on fairly securely and even if you knock the filter it doesn’t move. The problem I found is that because the filters are so thin they are hard to hold onto and I constantly found myself touching the glass with my fingers. You can also turn the red ring to adjust the polarizing effect, but because the ring is so thin you need to be careful that you don’t end up putting your fingers on the glass.

As they use magnets you can actually stack the filters to create stronger strengths of ND. While I wouldn’t actually recommend putting that much glass in front of the OSMO Pocket’s camera, you could do this for capturing long exposure timelapses or photos.

How do they perform?

Having ND filters is one thing, but if they aren’t well made from quality glass then they can introduce fairly extreme color shifts, particularly when high strength ND is used. This is especially true when you combine both ND and PL properties into a single filter. I decided to do some tests to see how well the Freewell filters performed. To do this I shot a color chart, first with no ND/PL filters being used, and then with the various strengths of ND/PL. What I wanted to see is if there were any color shifts or loss of sharpness when using the filters.

The filters performed fairly well, even at high ND strengths, but they do have a slight push towards green. In saying that it’s fairly easy to correct the small green tint in post. The strengths seemed to also produce inconsistent results. In somewhat of a surprise the ND/PL 8 had the most noticeable��green cast, while ND/PL 64 seemed to look the best out of all the filters.

When I compared the Freewell filters head-to-head against the PGYTECH OSMO Pocket PRO ND/PL filters I found that they weren’t as good. That’s not to say these filters are bad, but in my opinion, they aren’t as good as the PGYTECH filters which retail for the same price. Maybe this is because PGYTECH is using German SCHOTT optical glass, which can be found in more expensive ND filters that get used on digital cinema cameras.

The filters do suffer from a slight loss of sharpness, but this is only really noticeable at higher ND strengths. If you use the ND/PL 8 and ND/PL 16, you probably won’t be able to perceive any real-world difference.

I also tested the filters in real-world conditions and they certainly make a difference to the results you can obtain when using the DJI OSMO Pocket. Not only do they allow you to keep the shutter speed down, but they also do a very good job of minimizing and creating more pleasant flare. The ND/PL filters also help the OSMO Pocket with bright reflections and glare, and it’s nice that Freewell has made the filter rotatable so you can adjust the polarizing effect. The only problem with having a rotatable PL filter on a small gimbal such as the OSMO Pocket is that you need to rotate it everytime you put it on the camera lens to place it in the correct position. You can only really do this with the gimbal turned on and this means that you will probably have to end up resetting the gimbal once you have finished making the adjustment. It’s very easy to forget that the filters need to be rotated to adjust the polarizing effect and if you are in a hurry you may well end up shooting with it in the wrong position.

Above you can see the difference they make. At the top, the OSMO Pocket is set at 100 ISO 1/5oth shutter and you can see that the picture is massively overexposed. At the bottom, the same settings are being used but this time I added the Freewell ND/PL 16.

I also found the filters were great for doing long exposure timelapses and taking long exposure photos.

I was surprised that a set of ND/PL filters that retail for under $70 USD was able to produce fairly decent results. I’ve tested expensive filters from well-known manufacturers before that weren’t very color accurate.

Not all filters are created equal, and this is why it’s important to do tests like this. It’s important to know exactly what you are getting.

Direct competition comes from the PGYTECH OSMO Pocket PRO ND/PL filters, Honbobo DJI OSMO Pocket ND8+ND16+ND32+ND64 kit, and DJI’s own ND filters (which still aren’t available).

The Freewell 4K Series Bright Day Filter 4 Pack retails for $69 USD. Coincidentally this is the exact same price that the competing PGYTECH OSMO Pocket PRO ND/PL set costs. The Honbobo filters retail for ￥8,399 ($76.70 USD).

Conclusion

The  Freewell 4K Series Bright Day Filter 4 Pack is a fairly good solution for the Osmo Pocket if you are looking for ND/PL filters and I like how you can adjust the amount of polarization. I still prefer the PGYTECH OSMO Pocket PRO ND/PL set as it’s got almost zero color shift, it’s a little easier to attach, you can read the ND strengths, and the magnetic carry case is a clever addition. With the Freewell filters, it’s almost impossible to read what the ND strengths are unless you pull out a magnifying glass.
