A Fanfiction posted 11 days after the premiere of season 1. AKA: the very first (available) camp camp fanfiction on ao3

This one's interesting. This is a small fanfiction on ao3 about the campers parents coming to visit their kids.

There is a talent show. And max is the only one not in the spirit for the whole day. There's even a bit about Neil giving Nikki a strange potion from quartermaster as a way to test it's effect. Nikki obliged, enthusiastically drinking it all.

Eventually, the talent show goes wrong.

But what sets this episode apart from S2E12 the most is that David spends this story waiting and hoping for HIS parents to come.

They don't in the end, David is sad. :(

Max comes to his side and gives him a beer.

They seperate. And eventually, David realizes Max's parents didn't come either.

I'm gonna go ahead and take this as a funny coincidence.

The idea of meeting the campers parents predates 'Parents Day'. But the similarities between a fanwork made not even 2 weeks after the first episode and the season 2 finale is interesting. And I have reason to believe this wasn't edited post season 2.

people constantly talk about making a little middle age peasant boy try a can of monster or whatever to give them cultural shock but one thing i genuenly wonder about is how they would have reacted to modern artstyles, particularly cartoon and anime ones.

like, we can see anime girls or random fanart on tumblr and think nothing of it because we grew up in a cultural context where they were either the norm or we saw the artistic evolution from the style we grew up with into the current styles. but like imagine presenting a victorian child (whose only exposure to comics might have been the yellow kid and hasnt gotten to see the creation of the rubberhose style which would evolve into the disney style which would later inspire osamu tezuka who would set the foundations for the anime style that would evolve across half a century into moeblobs or whatever) to an image of panty and stocking or dragon maid.

would he be able to parse that this is supposed to depict people? would he think they look attractive or that they look like deformed homunculi. would this little german boy, fresh off the coal mines, be able to appreciate that characters like the powerpuff girls are supposed to look cute? that the designs of the characters in arcane are meant to be compelling and aspirational? would hans who is two months away from dying from tuberculosis, think that the simpsons look like incoherent doodles from someone who has no idea how to draw? would he understand the stylization in the way that lisa's and bart's hairline fades into their heads or think they are disturbingly mishappen? would he be able to understand that bugs bunny is supposed to be a rabbit or would the proportions of his limbs throw him for a loop? he would probably be able to understand furries, after all anthropomophized animals are something that human culture has had since the very beggining, but would he have it within himself the capacity to get as obsessed as kids today get over them? we have to remember we grew up in a culture where humanized animals, specifically depicted in a semi disney-cartoonish style, has been the main component in a little kid's media diet, but would this kid, who at 12 years of age has never seen a sparkle dog, be capable of being as enchanted by this as kids today?

these questions keep me up at night.

ned flanders .. where to fucking start .. in the shortest way possible, that is

well, quickly. me? getting along with ned flanders? In Real Life? hell no! simply by virtue of me being the person i am. perhaps the band Dr. Colossus put it one way when they said “Stupid Sexy Flanders / Republican at best / Politically to the right / Dexterity to the left” (haloes .. my Dr. Colossus mention) but who’s to say how accurate that is now. i too am lefthanded you know. and we all saw him kiss fat tony. and he missed him too

anyway, simple put. i think ned flanders is like. a deep character - thanks in part to his religiousness. now you can throw your hands up about like his, well, flanderisation - from the homer simpson perfect neighbour foil to unbearably devout christian - but it does effect multiple aspects of his life in really interesting ways

so you’re telling me this man hates his beatnik parents? (Hurricane Neddy) what, did he cling to religion as a way to other himself from them? carelessly raised by them without discipline? repressing his anger for years? and how does that reflect upon his own kids, brought up in a strict christian household. his own kids he’ll be overprotective of because he can’t afford to lose them like he lost their mother (Bart Has Two Mommies), but who are still harshly scorned and punished when their faith in christ waivers? (Todd, Todd, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?)

and what if when he doubts? when god takes both of his wives? (Alone Again, Natura-Diddly, O C’mon All Ye Faithful) his wives who he loved and will continue to grieve for? (I’m Goin’ to Praiseland, Diary Queen) and what of his second wife, huh? fourth grade teacher krabappel? how he learns to lower his religious guards for her? (Ned ‘n Edna’s Blend Agenda) how happy they were, however brief, with these compromises they made for each other? (The Man Who Grew Too Much) and krabappel’s relationship with rod and todd, did she have an effect on them? is it her influence whenever they speak out? (Bull-E) then again, we all know how impressionable those two are on a whim .. (Bart the Lover) and, goodness fucking gracious, so on and so forth. and they replaced his wives with a dog

sighs .. i can admit he can get Dead Wife Guy with it sometimes but i do think flanders is like .. a bit of a tragic man? i dunno, that “And I did something I hadn’t done in, I don’t know how long. God help me, I smiled.” in The Many Saints of Springfield lives sorrowfully in my brain. dude, after losing so much - his wives, his business he went bankrupt for (When Flanders Failed), his teaching job (Left Behind). like .. man. i dunno

i think it’s a little hard to watch a flanders-centric episode without wondering what it means for ned and his family on a deeper level, even for an episode as innocuous as Fland Canyon (what do you mean todd has night terrors that maude held him through? and that it’s todd’s nightmare of forgetting maude’s face that made him stop believing in christ?)

and, hey. if you’re really crazy enough, you could squint and make out some sort of aquatic sea creature motif with the Jellyfish Festival and song in A Star Is Born Again and his profound emotional processing in faith down in the hadal zone in O C’mon All Ye Faithful

regardless, all this to say. yeah .. i may be a bit of a nedhead :]

I wonder, does ms Peyton have a role in the mafia/school swap au? Is it similar to canon in how she takes Edna's place as the fourth grade teacher?

Oh boy! An excuse not to procrastinate on finally drawing a ref for her character!!!

Yes, she does have a role! She gets into the gang after Edna's death and a few failed hires, being the most competent and resilient out of any of them. She still moves into Springfield for her husband's oboe career and wanted to continue her own criminal career with the help of any local gangsters because she likes the community and rebellion aspect of the whole thing, unfortunately the Catamount Crime Organization (legal pseudonym: The Fat Cats Business Network) happens to be made up of the most dysfunctional and misanthropic weirdos in the area.

She basically acts as the only ray (heh) of sunshine in that miserable cesspit and tries to cobble together schemes that would help the gang function as a proper crime organization that can coordinate, but the others kind of sneer at her seeming naivety about the whole thing (as if their flailing tantrums against society and the government are any more mature 🙄)

I'd like to think Bart still saves her life and all that stuff... It's just that they don't see eachother much besides whenever the Simpsons stumble into getting involved with the gangsters like they usually do.

I arrived in a primary school in the UK and I was very un-confident in my English. I was shy, so I never really asked questions to the teacher.

One of the first lessons I had consisted of learning about neon colours, and some kind of 'pop' art that uses bright colours. The teachers gave us characters that would be so general that it would please everyone of us, and I looked at this strange cartoon, never seen before, and when I asked why everyone had the same designs, the classmate sitting next to me could not give an explanation apart from the fact that 'everyone knew them'.

These designs were from The Simpsons, I later find out in life.

Anyway, I panicked. I didn't know who these characters were nor the cultural impact it had on the British society, and I felt like I was so alienated. I felt like I walked into an invisible barrier-cushion.

So, I paid attention to the words used, and learnt that I was given a character named 'Bart'. I also learnt the name 'Marge'.

Now, fast forwarding a few days later, we, as a class, were given notebooks. There was no misprint, but there was no line on the side to indicate where the children should start writing.

I'm assuming in retrospect this was done so that children could learn better motor control and encourage them to use rulers and pencils everyday at the beginning of lessons before taking notes.

I didn't understand the function of these lines, nor did any teacher tell me that I had to do them... Or so I thought.

You see, I thought the British minds were heavily wrapped around The Simpsons that, the teachers and children were still speaking about it today. I supposed that it was a unique lesson in colouring and painting, and I also recognised how memorable and iconic the 'newspaper cartoon' seemed to the pupils in my class, so I just nodded along without thinking much about it.

It wasn't until I handed my book in that the teacher, flicking through the pages on the spot, told me, "Draw a margin."

I simply had no idea what it was. "What's a margin," I ask.

The teacher pointed at the paper, near the bind and said, "You know, margin."

I thought for a second. Margin... Marge? Oh! He said for me to draw one, so I must draw Marge from the newspaper cartoon!

"Every page, you have to draw a margin." He tried to clarify.

Every lesson? I panicked. That's so difficult! I thought the art lesson of the year was over and done with! Now I have to draw this woman with tall hair multiple times a day?

In the hopes of convincing myself too, I lied. "Oh, I understand what you mean."
