Summary:

Martha thinks of how to solve the problem of the Master and the Toclafane. --- Written for Whumptober 2023, day 8. Prompts used are “I’ve got no soul, but I’m not a soldier” and “It’s all for nothing.”

Martha has no idea what she’s doing.

That isn’t a new thing, she’s regularly out of her depth, struggling to tread water — usually when it’s her family involved, truth be told — but she’s never been this completely lost before, not when the whole world is on her shoulders.

The whole world is on her shoulders and here she is, sitting on a fallen tree in the woods, trying and failing to breathe. What did the Doctor even mean, use the countdown, what’s she supposed to do? She’s not a Time Lord, she’s not immortal, how is she supposed to succeed where Jack and the Doctor failed?

Martha looks through the leaves up at the sky, tries not to think about how Jack and the Doctor are being tortured, how her family is probably dead, how the Doctor told her to use the countdown and she has no idea what he means, no idea how to save him, no idea how to save anyone, no idea why anyone put her in charge.

But already, she’s thinking.

She’s not a soldier, not a doctor — not yet — not immortal, not an alien, doesn’t have godlike powers, but she’s smart, she’s resourceful, she can get up and focus on how to fix the situation at hand instead of panicking that the hospital is on the moon, and isn’t that why the Doctor chose her?

Resourcefulness, calmness in a crisis, she just needs to stop panicking and think .

What does she know?

One, the Doctor told her to use the countdown. To time something, maybe? Synchronise something? 

Two, the Doctor doesn’t want her to kill the Master. He isn’t the killing kind, not really, and he did actively tell Jack that Jack couldn’t kill the Master. If anyone would kill the Master, it’d be the Doctor himself, and that’s not going to happen.

Three, the Doctor believes she can do it herself. Martha doesn’t know how capable the Doctor thinks she is, but it could narrow it down.

Four, she can’t use the TARDIS. Whatever plan the Doctor has in mind, it can’t involve that.

Five, the Doctor loves humans, the Doctor trusts humans, if the Doctor isn’t there, maybe he expects humans to fix it themselves.

What solutions have worked in the past? Confusing the Judoon and the Plasmavore by having some non-human DNA wouldn’t work, the odd spheres wouldn’t check if she was human before murdering her.

What about Shakespeare? That wouldn’t work either, would it. She can’t exactly write and recite that all the spheres went away and expect it to happen.

Nothing that happened in New New (New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New) York would help, what’s she supposed to do, turn the electricity off the world and hope the spheres can’t see them?

Maybe reversing the aging could work, if she could figure out how to do it without turning the Doctor into a horrifying monstrosity. But, if he wanted her to do that, why would he have teleported her away?

Nothing she can think of works, how is she supposed to do this. Every myth and legend and story about the Doctor is all for nothing, because the entire world is going to be destroyed by these things, and there’ll be now New New (New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New, New) York, no utopia, nothing.

Then her mind catches on something, something she thought, stories. Because that’s what the Doctor is, at the core of it, what everyone is. He’s collections of stories, stories of his childhood on Gallifrey, stories of the Time War, stories of that odd man and his blue box who came to Earth and brought destruction and saving and ruin and life, stories told by enemies, friends, strangers. Names given and chosen and none of them real.

And all at once, Martha knows what to do.
