Love it or hate it, you have to admit Temu had a banger year. Launched in late 2022, the Chinese-owned ecommerce site, known for selling a vast array of astonishingly affordable goods, took only two years to become a household name in the US. Over the past 12 months, it has topped download charts, surpassing other viral apps like ChatGPT and Threads, and now operates in dozens of countries around the world. Even its biggest rival, Amazon, recently introduced a Temu clone called Amazon Haul that closely resembles the original, both in terms of its logistics supply chain and user interface.
Temu is projected to earn more than $50 billion in total sales this year, according to analysts from AB Bernstein and Tech Buzz China, potentially tripling its 2023 figure. Temuâs website now gets nearly 700 million visits worldwide every month, and Apple recently revealed it was the most downloaded app of 2024 on iPhones in the US.
Temu has now fully replaced Wish, an earlier bargain online shopping site, in the cultural lexicon as the signifier of knockoffs or budget-friendly alternatives. The winner of the recent TimothĂŠe Chalamet lookalike contest in New York City, for example, calls himself âTemu-thĂŠe Chalamet.â Tens of millions of ordinary people have tried out the app, many of whom learned about it through one of Temuâs seemingly unavoidable and relentless advertising campaigns. At this point, your grandma is probably obsessed with Temu, too.
âMy friends and family members who didn't know what it was in 2023 do now,â says Moira Weigel, an assistant professor at Harvard University who studies transnational online marketplaces. âRandom relatives who know that I study China or ecommerce will say, âOh, you must know all about Temu,â in a way that didnât happen a year ago.â
Weigel says that Temu has done a few things right, including identifying the correct suppliers in China, targeting appropriate customer segments, and finding an inexpensive way to ship products from one to the other. That allowed the shopping platform to defy early analyst predictions that it would quickly burn through its cash reserves and flame out.
Temu, which is owned by PDD, one of the biggest ecommerce giants in China, is moving and pivoting at a speed that its Western counterparts canât really grasp, says Juozas KaziukÄnas, founder of the ecommerce intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse. âWhen you look at a company like Temu, it's going a thousand miles an hour,â he says.
KaziukÄnas believes the most important thing Temu did this year was quickly switch its focus away from shipping small packages through air cargo and start building local inventory supply chains in the US and other countries. âThis year, it started with 100 percent of goods coming from China; now in the US, 50 percent of them are coming from local warehouses. For Western marketplaces, these types of changes would have taken years,â KaziukÄnas says.
Still, Temu does not have a shortage of looming challenges. In the US, the Biden administration is eager to dismantle a tariff exemption rule that critics say unfairly benefits Temu before it leaves the White House. In Europe, Temu is under formal investigation for allegedly selling illegal products and getting users addicted to its app. The company is also often criticized around the world for its negative environmental impact, labor practices, and alleged misuse of user data, including allegations from researchers in the US that the app poses a national security risk.
Whether Temu can overcome these hurdles will depend on how fast the company can adjust its supply chain and pivot away from the most troublesome aspects of how it operatesâbefore regulators take action. âWhat Temu was, is, and what Temu will be in the future are perhaps different things,â KaziukÄnas says.
From $1 Deals to Dupes
Temu made its name by promoting dirt-cheap deals that are often too good to believe, like $5 purses and $2 wireless headphones. It spent millions promoting the tagline âshop like a billionaireâ in a series of Super Bowl advertisements, and thatâs indeed what the app used to feel like: Identical or very similar products cost only a fraction of what they did on Amazon or Walmart, and it was hard to resist the temptation of adding a dozen more things to your shopping cart when they each were less than $1.
Temu managed to pull it off because it exploited a few areas of untapped potential, says Weigel. On the buyer side, it targeted price-conscious shoppers living in a time of high inflation. On the seller side, it scouted out Chinese factories that needed to keep their production lines running, but had no idea how to enter overseas markets. To connect them, Temu figured out it could take advantage of the so-called de minimis rule to send items affordably through air cargo directly to customersâ doorsteps. The provision allows people to send packages to the US duty-free as long as the goods inside are worth less than $800.
Because this business model is based on shipping everything from China and doesnât require much local inventory, itâs very easy to replicate in different markets. As of December 2024, Temuâs website shows that itâs available in 86 countries, while Amazon, having been in business for three decades, operates in only 22. âIn recent history, like the past 10 to 15 years, the first place people were interested in selling is the US and Europe, because they're large markets, prices can be higher, and so on,â says Weigel, who traveled to China this year to interview vendors selling on Amazon and Temu. âNow, there is increasing interest among these small-to-medium-size Chinese businesses in expanding in Africa, Southeast Asia, and also Central Asia ⌠Multiple people talk to me about how young and rapidly growing the population in Africa is.â
But that doesnât mean Temu is totally different from Amazon. In fact, the company has begun borrowing a number of tactics from the US ecommerce giant. In March, Temu reportedly started working with local warehousing companies in the US and allowing vendors on the platform to store their own US inventory instead of shipping directly from China. This is essentially what Amazon has been doing for years with its Chinese-based marketplace sellers, a strategy that allows it to deliver orders in as little as a single day. And now, these locally shipped products account for nearly half of Temuâs sales in the US, according to The Information.
What this means is that many of the products Temu sells are no longer exempt from American import duties, significantly reducing the price advantage that Temu used to have. But the strategy allows Temu to ship physically larger items to US warehouses through ocean freight before putting them up for sale, and then, the products can be delivered faster to customers, who previously often needed to wait a week or more for their packages to arrive.
That is why consumers are increasingly buying things like couches or other furniture on Temu, and also why sometimes prices on the site end up not being much lower than on Amazon or other online retailers. âI think it's pretty clear that Temu is becoming a more expensive offering,â says KaziukÄnas. âI talked to someone at Temu months ago, and they said that they're repositioning Temu from cheap to affordable.â
Higher prices can help recoup some of the financial losses that Temu incurred in its earlier days when it was primarily focused on expansion, but it could also create an identity crisis for the platform. If it doesnât have shocking $1 deals, then what does Temu really stand for? How can it compete with Amazon and Walmart when the other two are often perceived as more reliable, both in terms of shipping speed and product quality? âI think thatâs a problem for Temu already, that it doesn't really have a strong brand to consumers,â KaziukÄnas says.
Lingerings Risksâand Rewards
The days might be numbered for the de minimis exemption. The White House announced in September that it would crack down on âabuseâ of the provision, citing a sleuth of reasons ranging from intellectual property violations to fentanyl smuggling. Itâs not clear yet how exactly the regulation might changeâlawmakers may get rid of it completely or lower the price thresholdâbut a fix could be finalized before president-elect Donald Trump takes office next month.
If it happens soon, the change will no doubt make it harder for Temu to remain competitive, but itâs not going to eliminate it from the field. So much of the conversation in Washington this year has revolved around restricting de minimis to contain Temu, KaziukÄnas says, but the platform has already taken significant steps to reduce its dependence on it. Its ability to ship under de minimis and handle everything from inventory to pricing used to be the main selling points Temu used to lure Chinese suppliers, but now, itâs doing a 180 to address the risksâand the strategy seems to be working. âThe regulators are still only now trying to figure out what to do. And by the time they have figured out what they actually need to do, these retailers will be something different,â KaziukÄnas says, referring to Temu and competitors like Shein that rely on de minimis.
Of course, there are other risks that the company needs to address. What TikTok is going through right nowâthe app could be blocked in the US as soon as next monthâshould serve as a cautionary tale for Temu, as the latter is already receiving similar scrutiny from lawmakers over its Chinese ownership and data protection practices.
The possibility of being blocked in the US is real for Temu, but Weigel points out that thereâs less of a political urgency to act on an ecommerce platform than a social media one that has elicited concerns about things like artificial intelligence and disinformation. âââWhile there is a bipartisan consensus that people are concerned with the implications of China's tech rise, the incentives to police Temu are lower than TikTok,â she says. The Chinese ecommerce vendors she has spoken to donât seem very concerned either. âThese people are very nimble and flexible. My sense was that it was a thing people were curious about, but not something they were afraid about,â Weigel says.
After all, Temuâs aggressive expansion into other markets gives them plenty of alternative places to find customers if things get really ugly between the US and China. On a recent trip to Shenzhen, Weigel says she met a woman who heads a cross-border ecommerce industry association. One of the first things she told Weigel: âWe donât necessarily make the American and the European markets our top priority.â

RECENT SEO & MARKETING NEWS FOR ECOMMERCE, MAY 2024
As promised, here are the important news stories from marketing recently: SEO, social media, advertising, and more.
If you want to get this news twice-weekly instead of just once a month, become a paying member of my Patreon:Â patreon.com/CindyLouWho2
TOP NEWS & ARTICLESÂ
In the biggest SEO news perhaps ever, a massive list of Google ranking elements was leaked this week. Hereâs an overview, including links to the two main leak announcements and their analysis. It would seem that Google wasnât always honest when they told us some algorithm elements did or did not exist. Google took nearly 2 days to speak publicly about it, but didnât say much. Expect a lot more analysis in the coming weeks.Â
Instagram is updating its algorithm to favour original creators and smaller accounts, and remove reposted content from recommendations. âThis wonât affect âa set of publishersâ identified by Instagram with licensing agreements or resharing permissions from content creators, according to the blog post.â
Google is adding AI Overviews to US search immediately, with other countries to follow in the future. "AI Overviews gives answers to queries using generative AI technology powered by Google Gemini. It provides a few snippets of an answer based on its understanding of queries and the content it found on the topic across the web.â Right now, it is only affecting a small number of queries, however. While these will sometimes cover similar topics to featured snippets, the latter still exist. Early testing indicates that it does not currently show up when a search appears to be about buying something. Which is good, because you canât turn it off, other than filtering your search to âWebâ after doing it. Oh, and Google did not waste time figuring out how to include advertising in the AI overviews - it took just one week. As with most much-heralded AI launches, AI Overviews are fumbling badly; hereâs a summary of the many news articles mocking Google, including for recommending people glue cheese onto their pizza so it stays in place.Â
Chrome has yet again announced that it will not end the use of tracking cookies on schedule; the new target date for starting to wind down their use is early 2025.
Reminder that your old Google Analytics files (aka Universal Analytics) will no longer be available after July 1, so download them now! â...consider archiving back to 2018 or so to ensure you have pre-pandemic data since the pandemic really presented data anomalies for many companies.â There is a spreadsheet add-on to make this easier.Â
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINESÂ
Googleâs March 2024 Core Update finished rolling out April 19. âA Google spokesperson said, âThe updates led to larger quality improvements than we originally thought â youâll now see 45% less low quality, unoriginal content in search results, versus the 40% improvement we expected across this work.â Experts are struggling to analyze it, in part due to how long it lasted. Not surprisingly, Reddit was a big winner, and sites with a lot of ads and affiliate links continue to lose.Â
An update on how long your titles should be for Google. âSo whether your titles get cut off or rewritten in SERPs, Google still uses the HTML title tag for ranking considerations, not the titles shown in SERPs.â The authorâs research is too limited to draw reliable conclusions from, and most other research in this area over the last decade shows that shorter titles tend to rank better. However, she has pulled together many recent statements on title length and how it works, which is useful reading.Â
A reminder that âkeyword difficultyâ is a subjective score that different tools may not agree on, and that also depends on your overall site/shop and its history. This applies to all sorts of keyword tools, including those used for marketplace sites.Â
It looks like Google adding its AI to search results will have a strong impact on traffic, as it will answer questions without the need to click, and âonly 47% of the top 10 traditional search results are sources for SGE.â [SGE is now called AI Overviews.] That means if a page is outside the top 10 now, it may still be used to generate the answers, and could even get clicks from being displayed in SGE.Â
Still with AI, Google was fined âŹ250 million by France for using news media to train its AI, Gemini.Â
Google admits to deindexing many, many pages in February, due to quality issues.Â
A recent article dissects why Google search is so bad these days, and largely blames one man. While you can read the original here, you may want to start with a decent summary and the reaction from Google and the SEO community.Â
Hereâs a full list of Google changes and announcements from April.
Not Google
Both Microsoft and Google had excellent first quarters, with ad revenue up 12% and 13% respectively. âBing reached over 140 million daily active users.â
OpenAI is apparently not starting their own search engine, contrary to rumours.
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
General
Hereâs another of the periodic posts that tries to figure out the best times to post on different social media sites. It covers Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter and Pinterest.Â
Direct Messages are now available on Bluesky.Â
Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
In another recent AI fumble, Meta has introduced an AI assistant to its various products in several countries - but you canât turn it off in the search bar. It may also show up in group chats, including discussions about parenting. âThe Associated Press reported that an official Meta AI chatbot inserted itself into a conversation in a private Facebook group for Manhattan moms. It claimed it too had a child in school in New York City, but when confronted by the group members, it later apologized before its comments disappeared.â
Hereâs more on Metaâs automated ad issue that is ramping up costs but decreasing sales for many, including small businesses.Â
Meta is now offering its Verification for Business subscription package to more countries, and has added new tiers as well.Â
While Meta had a strong 1st quarter financially, it projects weaker results through 2025 as it spends a ton on money trying to guide its AI offerings to profitability.Â
Instagram
Instagram added some new features, including âRevealâ, which blurs Stories, and only releases the content once you DM the creator.Â
Reels under 90 seconds perform better on Instagram than longer ones.Â
To help avoid scammers on Instagram, learn how to identify and block fake accounts.Â
Instagramâs Creator Marketplace - where businesses can search for influencers to promote their product - is now available in 10 more counties, including Germany, France and Indonesia.Â
LinkedIn
You should be optimizing LinkedIn posts for the platform itself and outside search engines. The article includes tips for both personal and business pages.
LinkedIn is adding games you can play once a day, which sounds weird for a professional network.Â
Pinterest
Pinterestâs summer trend report has arrived; apparently maximalism is in yet again. Â
Reddit
Reddit is one of those sites that is getting worse lately as people try to get Google ranking through it (which is a whole other SEO story I have covered in these updates before).
ChatGPT will now be training on Reddit comments. The agreement meant a huge stock boost for Reddit.Â
Reddit is trying to attract more French-speaking users by auto-translating the site in real-time using AI.Â
After plenty of user complaints, Reddit is starting a new awards scheme.Â
Snapchat
You can now edit your Snapchat messages within 5 minutes of sending, if you subscribe to Snapchat Plus.Â
Threads
Meta wants more content on Threads, and is willing to pay well-known creators to create it. Invite only, of course. Â
You can now filter out unwanted words on Threads.Â
TikTok
While the US government has voted to ban TikTok if the company isnât sold, there is a lot of time left before that could happen, and a legal battle to be fought. TikTok has already filed a lawsuit, as have some major creators. Meanwhile, small business owners and creators are understandably worried. From an article by the BBC: âAccording to March 2024 data from TikTok, more than seven million small US businesses use TikTok, and the company reported it drove $15bn (ÂŁ12.04bn) in revenue for these enterprises in 2023.â
How to rank on TikTok: the Ultimate Guide. Some of the tips include hashtags, keywords, and choosing the right thumbnail.Â
There are several ways to remove (or avoid) the TikTok watermark if you want to use your TikTok content on other platforms.Â
Twitter
Twitterâs domain has finally switched over to X in some locations [but I will still call it Twitter].
(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies)Â
Time to gear up your content marketing plans for June.Â
ONLINE ADVERTISING (EXCEPT INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL MEDIA AND ECOMMERCE SITES)Â
Search ads are converting less while costing more, something that has been going on for a few years now. âAdvertisers are paying more for leads and clicks, while Alphabet, Googleâs parent company, keeps reporting record profits.â This is one of the reasons the US Department of Justice argues that Google is a monopoly.Â
Not enough AI in your ads? Google is solving that through video ads and more virtual try-ons.Â
Google Shopping is going to start showing how many people have bought from each site recently, although businesses can opt out.Â
Google is removing keywords from Google Ads accounts if they have received zero impressions in the past 13 months. While you can reactivate them, Google discourages that.Â
You may be able to run Googleâs Performance Max ads through particular marketplaces now or in the near future, if your marketplace signs up. For some businesses, selling through a marketplace might be cheaper than setting up a site.Â
Social media advertising is now bigger than search ads, according to a recent report. Almost â
of these ads are on various Meta properties.Â
BUSINESS & CONSUMER TRENDS, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICEÂ
Slow economic growth in the United States in the first quarter of 2024 sparked worries that the rest of 2024 will be as bad or even worse. Even McDonalds is stressing that consumers can only take so much inflation.Â
US ecommerce sales were up in the first quarter, more than overall retail.Â
Some consumers are finding that ecommerce is tiring, offering too many options and no easy way to shop quickly. âDespite an increased emphasis on personalized experiences in recent years, 7 in 10 customers feel either no improvement or an increase in the time and effort required to make a purchase decision.âÂ
MISCELLANEOUS (including humour)Â
Before returning orders to Amazon, make sure your cat isnât in the box. (Itâs fine, fortunately!)

Hiring an Ecommerce Agency: The Complete Guide
âGreat web design without functionality is like a sports car with no engine.â â Paul Cookson
When it comes to launching or upgrading your ecommerce presence, the stakes are high and the opportunities boundless. In a digital ecosystem brimming with potential, a proficient ecommerce agency is your navigator, engineer, and co-pilot all in one. But not all agencies are created equal. This guide will walk you through the essential points to consider when hiring an ecommerce agency, ensuring your business gears up for success in the virtual marketplace.
Identifying Your Ecommerce Needs
Before you even begin the hunt for an ecommerce agency, itâs crucial to have a clear understanding of your needs. Are you looking for an impressive Shopify Plus store development? Or perhaps, your needs are more tailored towards intricate UI/UX design for your ecommerce store. Custom application development, integrations with ERP/SAP systems, syncing with an offline store, or other bespoke customizations might be on your checklist. Knowing your exact requirements will streamline the hiring process and lead to more productive conversations with potential agencies.

Extract Fashion SKU Listings Product Dataset from SHEIN
Introduction

Palestinian graphic designer Bilal Tamimiâs YouTube videos from the village of Nabi Saleh in the West Bank have received 6 million views during the past 13 years. His uploads document joyous festivals and peaceful protestsâbut also violent skirmishes between Nabi Salehâs 600 residents and occupying Israeli soldiers. âI need to show to the world whatâs happening in my village and the suffering of my people from occupation,â he says.
The platform has helped Tamimi broadcast to his more than 20,000 subscribers, but heâs locked out of YouTubeâs revenue sharing program that pays a share of ad sales to more than 2 million video creators in 137 countries or territories. When Tamimi tries to sign up, YouTubeâs app says, âThe YouTube Partner Program is not available in your current location Palestine.â
The internet has given some Palestinians a global audience, but many benefits of online life that billions around the world can take for granted simply donât work for people in Gaza and the West Bank. In addition to YouTubeâs partner program, money transfer services such as PayPal and ecommerce marketplaces, including Amazon, largely bar Palestinian merchants from entry. Google tools for generating revenue from web ads or in-app purchases are technically open to Palestinians but can, in practice, be inaccessible due to challenges verifying their identity or collecting payment.
As Israeli forces have bombarded Gaza in pursuit of Hamas, tech workersâ and rights activistsâ frustrations with the regionâs digital inequality has grown. Palestinians are barred from YouTubeâs Partner Program and struggle with intermittent connectivity. Israeli YouTube channels in the program could be bringing in some revenue from conflict-related content. Popular Israeli singers have drawn views with songs honoring victims of Hamasâ October 7 attack on Israel, while travel advice channel Traveling Israel has received millions of views on historical explainers.
Human rights organizations say the disparity in access to online sources of income weakens the Palestinian economy. "Many Palestinians who work online struggle to be paid," says Marwa Fatafta, a policy and advocacy manager at the rights organization Access Now. YouTubeâs policy âfits a larger pattern of tech companiesâ discriminatory approach to Palestinians.â
Google spokespeople, who asked not to be named for safety concerns, say in a statement that the company is committed to creating economic opportunities for Palestinians through services and training. The YouTube Partner Program wonât be available in the Palestinian territories until Google launches a local version of YouTube, which involves customizing features and options to the language and culture. "We continue to invest in the infrastructure that's needed to offer more tools to monetize with Google to ensure itâs a seamless process and follows local legal requirements,â one of the spokespeople says.
To get a sense of how Palestinians are excluded from or face barriers to tapping the worldâs largest ecosystem for making money onlineâGoogleâsâWIRED reviewed popular Palestinian YouTube channels, news websites, and apps associated with the region. Interviews with content creators, activists, and current and former Google staff familiar with the region and company policies helped fill out the picture. The investigation revealed how a series of Palestinian projects and companies hit financial dead ends when attempting to monetize online in ways easy for people in countries such as the US and Israel. Others resorted to complicated geographic workarounds that siphon off revenue.
The Google sources not authorized to speak to media allege those challenges reflect years of internal politics and neglect of Palestinian users at the company. The sources say a localized version of the companyâs search engine, Google.ps, launched in 2009 only after a desire to provide more relevant results narrowly beat out concerns about public backlash for an action some people could view as endorsing disputed territories. But there hasnât been management resolve in recent years to risk changing the status quo to introduce a Palestinian YouTube that would give local creators access to monetization.
US congressman Mark Pocan of Wisconsin says Israelâs current attack on Gaza underscores how wrong that pattern of online exclusion is. âWhen massive companies make money hand over fist from creators but deny them their fair share just because of where they live, that is just plain wrong,â he says. It is crucial, he argues, that âPalestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have equal opportunities for economic participation.â In May, Pocan led several Democratic US lawmakers in urging PayPal to allow Palestinian accounts. PayPal, which declined to comment, hasnât changed its policies.
Duty First
Tamimi, 57, started posting on YouTube in 2010 and views it as a duty in service of his villagers, not a way to get rich. He first tried to join the serviceâs revenue sharing program a few years ago as a way to defray his costs. âI would for sure try to improve my work, to have a good camera,â he says. âAnd maybe I can help other people who are doing what I am doing through workshops and cameras.â
Today Tamimi uses an iPhone 12 Pro Max he bought himself and camcorders and equipment donated by B'Tselem, a Jerusalem-based nonprofit organization that aims to document human rights issues in Palestinian territories.
Tamimiâs focus on winning attention over profit is no different than other YouTube creators, says Bing Chen, who once led global creator initiatives at YouTube. âRevenue is of course an incentive, but fame is more so,â says Chen, who now develops and invests in creators through his company AU Holdings.
You donât need a fancy camera or editing to draw an audience. When Israeli professors analyzed about 340 TikTok videos from 2021 related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict they found pro-Israeli videos had higher production values but received lower engagement. They argued that viewers preferred Palestinian content because public sentiment tends to favor those seen as victims.
At a time of widespread suffering now on both sides of the border and an intense period of global attention on the region, Palestinian channels like Tamimiâs could be drawing record engagement and revenueâmoney that could, one day, make rebuilding easier.
Instead, Tamimi has withdrawn from YouTube. He started posting only infrequently after his village stopped organizing weekly protests around 2018 and with no income available feels no loyalty to the Google service. When an incident flares up, he is now more likely to livestream on Metaâs Facebook, where he draws thousands of viewers. âYouTube is like an archive,â he says, not a place to share new content.
Geographic Gaps
YouTubeâs revenue program for creators, known as YPP, launched in 2007 and pioneered the concept of a major social media platform turning amateur stardom into a well-paying job. It now has competition from Meta, X, and TikTokâwhich also donât offer their programs to people in Palestinian territoriesâbut remains the leader in influence and geographic reach.
Despite YouTubeâs dominant position, WIREDâs review found that YPP doesnât let in creators from over a quarter of the world's 100 most populous countries, most of them in Africa. It welcomes people from many countries with smaller populations than the Palestinian territories, where, combined, an estimated 5 million people reside. Creators from Iraq and Yemen, also Arabic-speaking places troubled by conflict, are listed as supported.
Chen, who helped develop YPP while working at YouTube, believes that the platformâs leaders may want to avoid funding creators whose content puts them at risk from local authorities, and also worry that language barriers or limited staffing could make it difficult to provide suitable customer service.
But itâs not impossible for platforms to work with creators in Palestine. California-based fundraising service Patreon gets money to Palestinian users through the payments provider Payoneer, and smaller money-moving tools such as Saudi Arabiaâs PayTabs say they support transactions with Palestinian accounts.
Other parts of Googleâs vast empire claim to serve Palestinians businesses, but people reached by WIRED say the reality is very different.
Google documentation says the Google Play app store allows developers from 163 markets, including one listed as âPalestine,â to sell apps and in-app purchases and that Googleâs AdSense advertising system supports 232 countries or territories, including âPalestinian Territory.â
Odeh Quraan, who runs a Ramallah-based software development agency called iPhase with overseas customers, says the sign-up process for AdSense requires entering a PIN mailed by Google. But Israel controls the flow of mail to the West Bank, and many items never arrive, he says. He circumvented that by using Stripeâs Atlas service to establish a company in the US state of Delaware without ever setting foot there. But it comes with downsides. âTaxes are a headache, and transferring money from the US bank account to the local banks has turned out costly,â Quraan says.
Three out of 12 popular Palestinian news websites display ads using Google technology, compared with 11 out of 12 well-known Israeli news sources, WIRED found. One of the Google spokespeople says the company in late October began notifying websites in the region about a virtual alternative to the mailed PINs, though the option is not stated in public support documentation.
Elsewhere in Ramallah, software development company Mongid stopped offering in-app purchases from an ecommerce app on Google Play and abandoned a YouTube channel with tutorials on using online learning tools because it was too difficult to receive revenue via Google, says CEO Mongid Abu-Baker.
This month, he and two other app developers interviewed by WIRED have been stymied by a new Google Play requirement that all developers get verified by global professional services firm Dun & Bradstreet. Neither the Palestinian territories nor their country code for phone numbers are listed as options on sign-up webpages, and Palestinian developers must seek customer service from Dun & Bradstreet through offices in Israel rather than an Arab country.
Abu-Baker calls the lack of recognition an affront on his identity. âPalestinian companies hold an importance no less significant than any other worldwide,â he says. He downgraded his account to avoid verification and now worries about losing access to some Google Play features.
Efrat Segev, chief of data and product for Dun & Bradstreet in Israel, says hundreds of Palestinian businesses have finished verification over the past two years and that complaints are few but that it is trying to remedy the concerns. Google declined to comment.
The difficulties faced by Abu-Baker and others in Palestine clash with messaging from Googleâs leaders in California about its work in the Middle East. Last year, Google chief financial officer Ruth Porat announced that the company would spend $10 million over three years to help Palestinian graduates, developers, and entrepreneurs âadvance their digital skills and find employment.â Just weeks before the recent war broke out, Google said it aims to serve 3,500 Palestinians from the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem through the investment.
Asked on stage at a conference this month about Googleâs role in contested areas like Gaza, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said his company can be a critical technology partner. âWe don't see it in the geopolitical context,â he said. âWe see it in an enabling context.â
Some Israeli creators, like those in Palestine, feel Google isnât living up to that. Oren Cahanovitc, owner of the Traveling Israel channel, says videos discussing politics are being flagged by YouTube as not suitable for ads. Corey Gil-Shuster, the Tel Aviv-based creator behind the Ask Project, which interviews Israelis and Palestinians about their views on the conflict, says heâs seen the same pattern.
YouTubeâs screening tools can deem videos showing violence or capitalizing on war as inappropriate for advertisers, although partner program participants also get some revenue from paid subscribers to YouTube who donât see ads. That business, and revenue stream for creators, is growing.
Palestinians lack the opportunity to receive checks from YouTube at all. The Israeli creator Gil-Shuster says the disparity was news to him and that the fix seems clear. âPalestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza, obviously,â he says, âshould have equal right to benefit from monetization as anyone else.â

RECENT ECOMMERCE NEWS (INCLUDING ETSY), Early May 2024
Welcome to my latest coverage of Etsy and other ecommerce news, early May edition. I am off for a short vacation Monday, so thought it best to get this report out now.
Want to get shorter versions of these reports but more frequently? Become a paying member of my Patreon. I will be adding new resources and content there once I get back from my trip.
Want to get these posts via email? Sign up here.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLESÂ
Etsyâs first quarter financial report for 2024 was not great, but that was expected. The real news is that they no longer expect the current quarter to be much better [Tumblr post by me]. Also, they are still planning on changing search.Â
Canadian shipping service Chit Chats is shutting a dozen offices in 4 provinces, starting April 29 through May 15 [LinkedIn Post by me]. It appears they expanded too fast and have much more competition now than when they first opened, so the additional locations were not very busy. Some may be replaced by drop off points. There is a thread in the Etsy forum with more info.
Etsy CEO Josh Silverman made over $16 million in 2023, roughly the same amount as 2022 [pdf; see page 56]. Almost all of that was stock options. Chief Financial Officer Rachel Glaser made over $8 million, as did Chief Technology Officer Rachana Kumar.Â
ETSY NEWSÂ
Etsy buyers are receiving emails asking them to rate their recent purchases, as discussed in this Etsy forum thread. The owner of Garden Path Rosaries at Peter's Square Marketplace sent me the screenshot below, which popped up after they clicked the email to confirm they had received the order.

These questions may be connected to details popping in recent reviews, even though the popups and emails say the feedback âwonât be shared with the seller or shown on Etsy.â See this screenshot from Kathie from PillowDetailâs shop:

Itâs also possible these review details come from a different test, or even from the act of leaving a review, as some buyers report getting similar options when they leave public reviews. [As is usual with Etsy, they change a lot of things without explaining how any of it works.]
Etsy seems to have deleted most Messages in seller spam folders without any warning, and some shop owners are not happy about it. [The only one I have left is a recent Message that Etsy moved there erroneously.]
Etsy is still promoting its TurboTax discount to Canadian sellers - even though the integration only works in the US. [post by me on LinkedIn]
Canadians no longer need to have a Canada Post Solutions for Small Business account to use Etsy Labels - and the discount for Tracked Packet to the US is very good. [Patreon post by me]
NBC News calls out Etsy for AI crochet patterns that donât work. While the article blames the images being made by AI, Iâll bet the patterns were too.Â
Despite this type of criticism over allowing AI items to be sold on the site, Silverman told a recent investors conference that he is still all in on AI in many forms. âMany sellers on the platform are generating content in collaboration with a machine, Silverman said, and a large amount of new item listings are generated in collaboration with GenAI. But given that Etsy is a platform for handmade goods, the boundary between man-made and machine-made required some clarification. âWe had some discussions about, is that handmade or not? Does that belong on Etsy? And we decided, ultimately, that it wasâin the same way that electronic dance music, the most popular form of music in the world right now, is collaborations between humans and synthesizers,â said Silverman. âI think this collaboration between humans and machines to generate art is actually going to be the next frontier.â He did admit that the search chatbot tested on the app many months back was poorly received. [The article is really worth reading, in my opinion.]
Gift Mode has now launched worldwide [text with embedded video], and gift teasers will soon include videos from the giver. The teasers have been growing in popularity, with 7% of gift orders in March using the teaser.Â
The Marketplace Trends report for spring & summer is out, and apparently there has been a 266% increase in searches for divorce gifts. Even more impressive is a â2,159% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for lawn gamesâ. Skim through the whole report if you want to know what is trending up.Â
Etsy released 2 different âimpact goalâ posts on Earth Day, which included Reverb and Depop. While you can read a lot more detail in the 2023 Integrated Annual Report [pdf], here are the individual posts:Â
Environmental impact goals: reduced carbon emissions, on track to be net zero carbon emissions by 2030. â[S]ellers created 108 million listings with circular attributes on the Etsy, Depop and Reverb marketplaces, including vintage, upcycled, used and secondhand items.â The document mentions increasing Disaster Response Grants (for U.S sellers only) and âopen source resource guides that help makers access climate-related disaster information and funding.â 2024 goals are listed.Â
Social impact goals: discusses gender, race and disability representation in its workforce, and funding for âcreative entrepreneurs from low-income and underserved communities.âÂ
Related to the environmental impact goals, Etsy published a disaster guide (mostly US-focussed), and put out a (very short) funding guide for US sellers at the same time. Â
ECOMMERCE NEWS (minus social media)
Amazon
Amazon added over 5 million sellers since 2018, 2 million of them in the US. That's only about 100,000 more than Etsy in the same time period, comparing 4th quarter 2018 to the end of 2023.Â
There are now Amazon shoppable livestreams on Prime Video and Freevee. âAmazon Liveâs FAST channel will feature 24/7 programming from popular creators and celebrities, such as reality TV stars âŚBrands like Tastemade and The Bump will also host streams to sell their products.â
Amazon drone delivery is ending in California, but continues in Texas and will soon start in Arizona.Â
Amazonâs first quarter was great, but note that â
of its operating income comes from the cloud services, not ecommerce.Â
BigCommerce
BigCommerce announced many new features, including more country localization, new builder options, syncing inventory through Feedonomics, and of course, AI.Â
eBay
eBay is now testing an Explore feature to put together a clothing shopping feed with AI. I donât have this in Canada yet, but it has been spotted in the US and the UK, and the links in the article do work in Canada. I selected a bunch of womenâs options and was presented with a feed that had a lot of menâs clothing, so this appears to work about as well as Etsyâs Gift Mode, which Liz Morton compared it to.
eBayâs sales and revenue were both up slightly in the first quarter, while active buyers were down 1% from the year before.Â
Shopify
Shopify is reorganizing Support, in part to inject more AI into the process. Employees are worried about possible layoffs.Â
Walmart
Cart.com is now helping new sellers start on Walmart Marketplace, and is offering multi-channel syncing for existing businesses as well.Â
All Other Marketplaces
Vinted has turned a profit for the first time, riding the trend of interest in secondhand clothing.
Ruby Lane will be increasing its shop fee to $45 from $25 as of June 1, and will be removing the rebate for listing 15 new items monthly.Â
Bonanzaâs annual Spring sale runs May 8th to 15th. The coupon code sellers must activate is SpringSale2024.Â
The EU has forced Shein under the umbrella of the Digital Services Act.âThe European Commission specifically noted new requirements for Shein around illegal products on its site. The company will have four months to submit a risk assessment report and will need to introduce mitigation measures against âthe listing and sale of counterfeit goods, unsafe products, and items that infringe on intellectual property rights.â
ShippingÂ
Labels service Shippo is introducing paid tiers for any businesses printing over 30 labels a month through its service. Anyone printing 30-200 labels a month will be charged $19 monthly; under that is free.

Canadian customers - who are already being charged 5 cents USD per label - are also affected, although we get fewer features and carriers [Shippo just confirmed this via support ticket.] Sounds like there are cheaper options for most of us elsewhere now.

Empower Growth With An Amazon Marketing Agency & Digital Transformation Services

An Amazon Marketing Agency plays a pivotal role in redefining how brands connect with millions of customers on the worldâs largest e-commerce platform. With growing competition and ever-evolving digital buyer behavior, businesses must adopt more than just conventional advertising. Integrating digital transformation services and partnering with an integrated marketing agency ensures your business is agile, customer-centric, and revenue-driven.
Amazon has matured into a marketplace where optimization, visibility, and customer experience determine success. Itâs no longer enough to simply list products; you need a cohesive strategy that blends performance marketing, analytics, content creation, and cross-channel integration. Here's how these three pillarsâAmazon Marketing, Digital Transformation, and Integrated Marketingâcan revolutionize your brand.
Why Your Business Needs an Amazon Marketing Agency
Working with a dedicated Amazon Marketing Agency gives you access to expertise across campaign management, product optimization, advertising automation, and account health. Here's what a specialized agency brings to the table:
a. Product Listing Optimization
From keyword-rich titles and bullet points to enhanced A+ content and high-resolution imagery, every product listing must convert visitors into buyers.
b. Amazon PPC Campaigns
Pay-Per-Click campaigns on Amazonâlike Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, and Sponsored Displayârequire regular bid management and A/B testing. Agencies use data-backed insights to reduce ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) while maximizing ROI.
c. Brand Store Setup
An Amazon Brand Store is your branded digital storefront. A good agency will design and manage it to increase engagement, cross-sell products, and improve average order value.
d. Amazon DSP & Programmatic Advertising
For off-platform targeting and retargeting, Demand-Side Platform (DSP) services can be game-changing. Agencies ensure your ads are reaching high-intent audiences beyond Amazon itself.
Integrated Marketing Agency: The Omnichannel Bridge
While Amazon might be the strongest revenue driver, it canât exist in isolation. An Integrated Marketing Agency aligns all your online and offline marketing efforts under one data-driven strategy.
a. Unified Branding Across Channels
Integrated agencies ensure your brand voice, messaging, and visuals stay consistent across platformsâAmazon, Google, Meta, YouTube, email, and beyond.
b. Omnichannel Campaign Execution
From launching influencer campaigns on Instagram to email remarketing, SMS automation, and Google Ads, integrated agencies manage everything under one umbrella.
c. Cross-Platform Analytics
Measuring attribution across channels is critical. Integrated agencies bring in tools like GA4, HubSpot, and Salesforce to map every customer touchpoint.
d. SEO + Content Strategy
An integrated content strategy boosts visibility not only on Amazon but also on your D2C website, YouTube, blogs, and affiliate sites.
Role of Digital Transformation Services in Modern Marketing
A powerful digital transformation company helps businesses reimagine their processes, marketing workflows, and customer experiences using cutting-edge technologies.
a. Marketing Automation & AI
Using tools like Salesforce, Marketo, or ActiveCampaign, digital transformation companies automate repetitive tasks while personalizing communication using AI.
b. CRM & Data Integration
Consolidating customer data across platforms gives marketing teams a 360-degree view of every customer journey. This leads to more accurate segmentation and targeting.
c. Cloud and API-Based Integrations
To enable real-time decision-making, digital transformation services implement cloud-based systems that sync your eCommerce, CRM, and logistics.
d. Personalized Customer Experiences
Using behavioral data, companies can hyper-personalize content, recommendations, and offers, leading to increased engagement and loyalty.
Synergy: Amazon + Integrated Marketing + Digital Transformation
When a business combines all three forcesâAmazon Marketing, Integrated Marketing Agency solutions, and Digital Transformation Servicesâit unlocks exponential growth. Letâs see how:
Cross-Promotion: Run retargeting campaigns on social media for products viewed on Amazon.
Data Synchronization: Use CRM data to refine Amazon ad targeting based on customer lifetime value.
Unified Messaging: Create a seamless brand experience from the Amazon store to email sequences and landing pages.
End-to-End Funnel Optimization: From discovery (Google Ads), to consideration (Amazon Store), to conversion (retargeting & upselling), every stage becomes measurable and optimized.
Choosing the Right Amazon Marketing & Transformation Partner
When choosing an agency or transformation partner, evaluate the following:
Industry Experience: Agencies with domain experience in your industry (FMCG, electronics, fashion) will understand compliance, seasonal behavior, and margin structures.
Tech Stack Proficiency: From Amazon Ads Console to tools like Helium 10, SEMrush, Mailchimp, and Salesforce.
Custom Strategy Approach: Avoid cookie-cutter strategies. Look for partners who invest in research and tailor the marketing mix to your goals.
Scalable Solutions: Whether you sell 50 SKUs or 5000, your marketing systems should scale effortlessly.
Real-World Results from a Unified Approach
A D2C skincare brand increased revenue by 60% by combining Amazon DSP, influencer-driven UGC on Instagram, and real-time CRM sync.
A home appliance company reduced cart abandonment by 35% after CRM automation and cross-channel retargeting were implemented.
A SaaS product leveraged digital transformation services to integrate Amazon ads with their app usage analytics, optimizing ad spend toward active users.
Future Trends in Amazon Marketing & Digital Transformation

Whether itâs boosting your visibility on Amazon, creating omnichannel experiences, or automating workflows, this unified approach future-proofs your growth.
