Skating prodigy Andrei Kutovoi dreams of the Olympics

You might have noticed him during the Junior Grand Prix event in Courchevel, this August.

We sure did.

The posture, the qualities of his skating, the musicality. You just couldn’t take your eyes off Russia’s Andrei Kutovoi.

He finished the event – his single JGP assignment this season and his first ever international competition – with a bronze medal, and left skating fans in wonder, in amazement: who is this incredibly gifted teenager, debuting on the World stage? Andrei was still 13 this summer.

Well, he’ll tell you that himself, in an interview done in St. Petersburg, his home town, by our very own Natasha Ponarina. Based in St. Petersburg as well, and working as a figure skating photographer, Natasha knew Andrei already – she had been following him for a couple of seasons, eyes glued, lens glued to the talent that he was, practicing at Yubileyny Sports Palace and, since 2017, at Tamara Moskvina’s figure skating sport club.

Cousin of Elizaveta Nugumanova, another skating wunderkind (Elizaveta is three years older), Andrei tried skating as well, when he was 5. And, as everyone expected, he liked it that much that he literally started running on the ice – he’d tell you with a smile.

…and you’ll notice the smile, but also the seriousness, in the numerous photos accompanying this interview.

Ladies and gentlemen, there you have him: 14-year-old Andrei Kutovoi, Olympic hopeful.

Natasha Ponarina: Andrei, let’s start from the very beginning – when did you start skating? How old were you?

Andrei Kutovoi: I was almost 5 when I put the skates on for the first time.

And how did that happen? Were you watching skating on TV, were you following your cousin, Elizaveta Nugumanova? What made you decide that you wanted to skate?

By that time, Liza was already training, and they decided to bring me to the rink as well, just to try it, maybe I would like it. I wasn’t following skating then, so it wasn’t my decision.

Who brought you to the rink, remember?

It was my grandmother who brought me to the rink for the first time.

What do you remember from your first day on skates? Did you like it right from the very start?

I think the first day at the rink was exciting and interesting, because it was something new for me. My mom says my first steps on the ice weren’t really steps, but it was running. I was running on ice, so to speak [smiling].

And judging by the fact that we kept going to the rink, I think I really liked it.

Where did you learn to skate and who was your coach back then?

My first coach was Irma Georgievna Bukhartseva, we trained on a small rink of Yubileyny Sports Palace.

And on the practice rink of Yubileyny Palace, Alexei Mishin’s group trained, which I joined later – and it was where I met my current coach, Veronika Anatolyevna Daineko.

When you first started skating was there a skater you wanted to be like? What about now – do you have a skater you admire?

When I first started skating I didn’t know any skaters and I didn’t watch figure skating.

It changed over time, and now I’m watching closely what’s going on in the skating world. I try not to miss any event of junior and senior level.

I admire the Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu, his skating skills, musicality, the way he feels every single movement. The ice and Yuzuru are like a single entity, that’s his element. Nathan Chen is also very strong technically, he can do all the quads – it’s the highest level.

“MY FAVORITE JUMP IS THE LUTZ”

Tell us, what do you like to do in your free time? You tried drawing, maybe something else?

There isn’t that much free time, but if there is some outside my studying, then I like recreational activities. Recently, my mother and I have been to the Norwegian ropes course park “Orekh”, that was a lot of fun, all that climbing, I really liked it, and I’ll definitely come back there.

I like to draw, as you mentioned, and I also like dancing and photography.

How does your weekly schedule look like? One has to train a lot to get the result that you have. Do you have time for school?

I train six days a week and I have one day off. Each training day includes two ice practices, two warm-ups, cool-down, stretching, and, on different days, I have specialized physical training, acting classes, choreography, jazz classes.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much time for school, I get to go there infrequently, but I’m being home-schooled, with the help of my mom and online lessons.

You’re 14 now – tell us, which medal/result/competition you are most proud of so far? [Andrei turned 14 on October 4, 2019]

Some of the most important ones are the first places in Championships of Russia (Younger Age) in 2016 and 2017.

Which is your most vivid memory from your career so far? Looking back, what comes to your mind first?

The strongest memory so far is the first Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel [August 2019]. It was my first international competition.

I was also really impressed by a show in Germany I took part a while ago [Media Markt Eisgala – Concert on Ice 2016]. We were touring different cities on a bus, I was surrounded by, and performed with, amazing famous skaters, aerial and ice acrobats, and there were also famous singers and music bands in the show. It was such a memorable experience.

Was it hard to learn the triple Axel? Which jump do you like the most – and the least?

Yeah, triple Axel is an ultra-C jump, like quads, so you can’t equate it to the triples. My favorite jump is the Lutz, and I don’t have jumps that I don’t like.

Can you tell us about your programs this season, how would you describe them? Judging by your inspired performances, you really like them, you are so in character, one-on-one with the music…

Thank you, I’m really glad to hear it.

Most of my SP is to “Fly Me to the Moon”, it’s a love theme. At first, I’m waiting for my beloved, counting the hours, then I see her and I hold out my hand, inviting here to fly with me to the moon, to immerse into the music of the stars. And, in the end, I confess my love to her.

At the end of the program there is a part for the step sequence, and I just dance to the music “I Won’t Dance”, the modern version of it.

My FS is to the music from “Les Misérables”. I represent the character from the times of French Revolution, Jean Valjean, but many people see me as Gavroche, which you can say is also right, since both these characters represent the best ideas of “Les Misérables”: independence, devotion, purity, compassion.

I really like these programs and I’m very grateful for them to Nikita Mikhailov.

You started you first season on junior Grand Prix level with a bronze medal in France. What are you plans and goals for this season, what do you want to achieve?

My plans include two triple Axels and a quad in a program and, of course, to skate clean. My team and I are working towards that.

What is your biggest dream as an athlete, a dream that you can share with the readers? What do you wish for as a skater?

It is 5 minutes long and it has the most exciting moments of each of the operas. I did it as I was listening to each of the operas and unpicking the best and most exciting and recognisble moments of it. I am quite happy with the final results. 

On my interim critique Rich advised me to try and experiment more with the sounds of them and make them sound more exciting and appealing as adding and mixing different elements part of the pop culture like drum and bass. Something that is different, appealing, exciting and closer to Gen Z and their expectations connected with a live performances.

This article helped me a lot to made my mind. I wanted so much to make something I’ve never done before, try to explore and find a new exciting and challenging approach. I was fascinated by the many exciting ways you can present it. You don’t need to have VR set in order to explore you can always do it from your computer or phone.

You or an artist you work with is giving a concert at a large venue in a nearby city and you need to fill the seats. To accomplish this goal, you need to create a visual marketing plan to show how you will market the upcoming show. A large part of any marketing campaign will include your plan for social media – outline your plan to promote this event using websites, influencers, and bloggers.

Influencer Marketing:

Identify a minimum of 5 influencers or bloggers you would want to write a post or feature about your show. Then research these traffic sources (social media influencers) you think will get you the traffic you need to market your event. The accounts you are targeting can be on appropriate platforms like Twitter, Tik Tok, Twitch, Snapchat, or Instagram, but and at least one traffic source should be a blog or other website. This is work for a social media marketing campaign to sell tickets for an Ice Cube concert and the Horseshow Casino in Hammond, IN! This event, which is primarily a hip hop event, is on January 28, 2023! You can expect to have a great show, and a lot more, with over 400,000 sq ft property containing gaming, entertainment, restaurants, bars, and lounges!  The event Ice Cube is putting on, includes a seating arrangement of 2,500 seats!

Ice Cube can draw from more than just an African-American crowd! If you listen to his lyrics and delivery, you would find that he has a commanding presence throughout the world! If you don’t listen to him, you could end up paying a price! Even as a white person, I see it as necessary to listen to him, so as not to do something that’d end up hurting different communities throughout the world!

He can connect with Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram best.

Then they sigh and say: lucky you! An it’s true, I am very lucky. Not only because I got to see those paradise like places, but because of so much more you have to offer. What most people cannot imagine though, is that most of the time I spent with you, I spent in dirt, in traffic, hunting cockroaches and rats or in front of my fire place.

ARRIVING

Your first lesson for me was to learn how to live from day to day. It was a jump in at the deep end, because there was no way I could continue my efficient, planning lifestyle with out a fridge or even a water boiler. I would go to the market everyday to buy food and charcoal. It is impossible to conserve food because of the heat on the one hand and insects on the other hand. Aunts would somehow always find their way into my plastic boxes. There’s nothing I can do about it. It didn’t take long until I was like: grit your teeth and get to it, and thought of it as extra protein. Lesson number 2 you taught me: some things are out of my control.

SURVIVING

The whole insect issue was not really a problem for me. I mean it’s not that I like cockroaches or rats but whatever I do, they’ll always be there. What bothered me more were the thousands of mosquitos. Especially during rainy season I tried hard not to be bidden too often, because I was worried to get Dengue fever. But again it is hopeless, they’ll bite anyway. And in the end it makes sense to ask whether it’s healthier to use Off lotion, which is forbidden to be sold in the EU and is probably carcinogenic, all day long.

UNDERSTANDING

My little sensitivities gave me a hard time in the beginning, but when I started to understand what bothers you all day long, it was worse. I hate to see you broken and weak like this. Manila bursting at the seams, so that you’re people live under the worst circumstances in basically any possible place, even a cemetery (whole article). I hate to have you admiring me for nothing but a huge bit of luck. I hate to know the truth about your missed but earning loved ones, who live abroad in Dubai or Lebanon. And I hate that I don’t have a clue of how to change any of it. On top of all that, the realization that most of your sorrows originate from colonialism. That makes those who you look up to, those who have put you in this situation in the first place.

QUESTIONING

I love and I hate how you sometimes don’t care. The first example that comes to my mind is that huge ship in the port of Iloilo. It’s been laying there for months now and nobody seems to know what has happened to it. But even if it’s completely broken, everything would be more profitable than leaving it there. Oh well, the ship made me laugh every time but in truth it’s very sad. How are you supposed to grow/evolve when you’re not aware of your resources and capabilities?

GETTING MAD

This leads me to my favorite topic of anger: the rubbish situation. This is the one thing I cannot make you responsible for, yet cannot forgive you. I know you have bigger fish to fry. I just wish you would rudimentarily be aware of what an extraordinary beautiful ecosystem your islands are. Or at least for your own health, stop burning rubbish. I tried my best, but the war against plastic bags is a Sisyphean challenge. I pray that it won’t be too late.

PUZZELING OVER

Not to begin with the mischiefs in your politics. It would be a lie to say nothing’s in progress in your country. Economical growth is happening in your capital, but the provinces don’t profit. It’s no wonder when local politics have been under the power of one family for decades. I had to realize that one can be dumb without end, as long as there’s money one can always have a career in politics. The whole situation is screaming for change, but how is it to be done? All I know is Duterte cannot be it. I never understood your admiration/the ignorance of what’s happening.

Did somebody say corruption? This makes me think of an anecdote that once happened to me when I wanted to withdraw money. “‘My request could not be processed’, why is that?” I asked the bank’s security guard and he answered with out looking up: “Because of power and corruption…”. The only time I ever got in touch with this stuff was at the immigration office I think. One of my all time favorite places… not. Every time I went there, the prices for my visa extension were different. It sounds funny but it made me angry to pay ridiculous extra fees like “express lane” that change nothing. But again, there’s nothing I can do about it.

NOT UNDERSTANDING

Your superstitions make me laugh and angry at the same time. How can you seriously believe in spirits, trolls and fairies? How can you be in bondage like that? And where I never got behind: how does all of this fall in line with christianity?

EXPERIENCING

Speaking of your faith: you amazed me. Coming from the least religious place on earth, Eastern Germany, I couldn’t believe how so many – no actually all of you – believe. I have to say you live a strange version of Christianity. From horror stories of people who are voluntarily crucified during easter to celebrations of events that didn’t even happen according to the bible (some islands celebrate the reunion of Jesus and his mother after he was resurrected). Even though I’m convinced that a great part has never ever read a single page of the bible, it was a pleasure to see and feel your spirituality. I found it an interesting experience also regarding my own faith.

CELEBRATING

They call you an americanized piece of Spain, with no culture except what emperors of the past centuries have left with you. But good god, you know how to celebrate fiesta! And even if there’s Lechon (pigling) for every single occasion it doesn’t matter. These events are your own. Even if I can barely finish one plate of food by courtesy, I would always go, because this is you in a nutshell. Fiesta means family, food, hospitality, karaoke, more food and Lechon obviously. I was blown away by Dinagyang festival in January. As much as I hated the beauty contest, I loved the tribe performances.

On your thousands of islands the party never stops. As much as I regretted every night club visit in Iloilo, I wish back to all the fun nights in Smallville (night life district of Iloilo) or your cozy beach bars.  I mean, what kind of world is it, where rum is cheaper than coke? It was a hell of a New Years Eve in Boracay last year – salamat gid Bryan.

One year wearing slippers and the shittiest clothes, like grandma-style maxi skirts. It didn’t matter at all, because I would still be “Miss beautiful” for you. And to speak the whole truth: All of them mold anyway.

Among the things I miss the most, your Jeepneys definitely make the top 3. Regardless if in the front, in the back, on the roof, with chicken between my feet or a 100 year old lollo (grandpa) on my lap – I love riding a jeepney! Jeepneys are a lifestyle. Even though they’re super loud and probably the main polluters, they will always have a special place in my heart. 🙂

EATING

Unfortunately I cannot say the same about your food. To summarize this long story of suffering, I’ll just say: you stay under your possibilities. With out doubt the best you have to offer is your fruit. I love all of them and they outclass everything my german super markt offers.

I would like to take the opportunity to pick the grossest and yummiest you have to offer. Basically I’m a huge fan of your vegetarian dishes like fried eggplant, bitter melon or munggo. Furthermore I would never turn down a sweet sin like a fresh halo halo, banana cue or bibingka.

But as much as I’d like to, I have no understanding why and how you can enjoy a boiled developing duck embryo (balut), boiled pig blood, duck feet or pig intestines. I am more than sure that I ate my lifetime ration of dried and later fried fish. There’s only one question left unanswered: How can you call this buko (coconut) salad?

TRAVELING

Oh Philippines, you have so much to offer. I will never forget the amazing memories I made when traveling from island to island, discovering your hidden gems. It’s hard to realize though that most of my friends from Iloilo won’t ever be able to see all this.

As off-hook as it sounds, but during the course of visiting all those amazing places, one becomes kind of choosy. One natural wonder trumps the other and in the end it’s the quit and raw places that fascinate the most. I’m in love with all your unpopular paradises left for me to explore, unlike other southeastasian countries.

Iloilo city, you little piece of dirt. Filipinos call you City of Love but I’m afraid you cannot compete with Paris – the “other” city of love -, to be completely honest with you. Quite the opposite, you are kind of the only place that turned out a lot less – or rather not at all – beautiful, looking back. You’re importance is founded on your inhabitants, food places and open air concerts or art galleries you hold. Other than that you actualize the shady sides of urbanization. Among those firstly your terrible pollution, the dirt and waste in general; poverty and slums; waifs, adults throughout the day and drunk at night – to name a few. I’m glad I didn’t live here permanently, but I certainly enjoyed the big city life experience during the weekends. How special is though, to have my buko (coconut) juice lady of trust in a city on the other side of the world?

Guimaras my love, you are literally what I call paradise. I love you for much more than your mangoes, even though I love them a lot already. Thank you Philippines, for paving me the way to find eternal piece with me, myself and I and a hammock. The truth lies in the fact that one doesn’t need more than that. With this, a whole different style of traveling opened up to me. I reckon this is your most precious gift to me. I would NEVER have had the courage to hitchhike!

LEAVING

It felt weird and rash to leave you, when there was still war going on in Mindanao. When my little village got a bomb threat. When summer had finally ended and water started to run more frequently through my faucet. But really this was the end of my endless summer. It was a time of crisis, when ISIS raged in Marawi, relatives of the local islamists suddenly showed up at the port of Iloilo. When the NPA decided the time had come to take action again and raided the police station of our neighboring village Maasin. And all along I updated myself using foreign media. I didn’t want to feel unsafe on your streets at night, but how was I not to, when nobody had a clue what was going on? Even though I was expecting our foreign office to withdraw us german volunteers any minute for the last couple of weeks, my return flight came earlier than expected. It was hectic, it was emotional and sudden.

COMING BACK

What I take along with me to “real life” is sadly less than I planned on. That’s how it always goes. Never underestimate the power of habits. But what I keep with me every day is the filipino point of view. Every time I walk the streets, my university or the super market. I cannot help but wonder what a filipino would think right now.

Sex tourism to me, is one of the worst felonies of mankind. The whole problem gets to me on a very personal level, when I see that the perpetrators live right here. Make it stop!

Even if I could, I wouldn’t change a single thing about our year together. Mahal kita, and: nahidlaw ako gid sa imyo ❤

This article is one of a monthly series about digital photography, written for The Leader by David Stokes.

Choosing a camera

These days there is a huge selection of digital cameras for us to choose from, and in this article I hope to shed some light on how to go about deciding the one that is right for you.

In addition to your phone or tablet, there are essentially three kinds of digital camera – Compact, Bridge and DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex). Each has their different benefits and drawbacks.

Compact Cameras

The big advantage of these cameras is their convenience and price. They fit in a pocket or handbag, and are very light, and at the lower end are the cheapest cameras on the market. Quality of image has improved greatly over recent years, but they do have tiny sensors (the digital equivalent of film), which means that whilst they take a good picture in good conditions, they are often poor performers in difficult light. However, they tend to be very good at close-ups. The biggest disadvantage to my mind is the lack of a viewfinder, which means you are relying on the LCD screen on the back to see what you are pointing at. This can make it very difficult to use in bright sunlight.

Bridge Cameras

Bridge cameras are so called because they are a halfway house between compact cameras and the larger DSLR’s. They will fit in a largish handbag, but not a pocket. Because they are bigger they have a larger sensor, and hence should produce a better quality image than the smaller sensors in a compact camera. Cost-wise, they are usually a little bit more expensive than the compacts, but cheaper than most DSLR’s. They often have a viewfinder.

DSLR Cameras

These are the most expensive of the three kinds of camera, starting at around €400. They have larger sensors than compact or bridge cameras, and therefore produce the highest quality images. Due to the ability to change lenses to suit different situations, they are the most flexible type of camera and hence can be set to take great photos in almost any circumstance.

The disadvantage of them is their size and weight compared to compacts and bridge cameras, which is the price you have to pay for the ability to take the best photos. There are a few DSLR’s about that are relatively light, for

However, if you buy a DSLR you will want to add lenses and other kit later on, and of all the DSLR makes, Canon and Nikon have the widest range of lenses and other peripherals such as flash. Also, third party manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma always make their products to fit Canon and Nikon cameras.

I have so far described the general choices before you. Your budget and quality desired will obviously determine which type of camera you should look at. But how do you go about choosing the particular camera to buy?

Only you can decide which camera you are most comfortable with, but I can give you a few useful pointers:

Compact Cameras

Pixel count is not everything.

If you see a camera with 15 million pixels for €100, and next to it one with 18 million pixels for €110, you could be forgiven for thinking you should get the latter because for only €10 extra you get 3 million more pixels. In truth, the size and quality of the sensor is the key issue on quality, not how many pixels. Indeed, due to electrical interference too many pixels packed on a small sensor can result in poorer quality. My DSLR has only 12 million pixels, and takes far better pictures than any compact.

Buttons and wheels are easier than menus.

A camera with no buttons may look sleeker, but having to use endless levels of menus is time consuming, and annoying, when people are waiting while you get your camera set. In particular, try to buy a camera with a mode wheel for selecting the shooting mode (portrait, landscape, sport etc., as well as the manual and semi-manual modes). See the picture.

If you feel that you would like to learn more about photography than just using the auto and scene modes, get one with manual, aperture and shutter modes (M, A and S in the picture).

Check customer reviews before deciding

Unless you go to a specialist camera shop you cannot rely on getting a truly informed opinion from a salesperson. Photography magazines do reviews on the latest cameras, but they are often far too technical and nitpicky for most people. It is worth taking a note of the models you are considering in the shop and searching on the Internet on sites like Amazon where there is usually a selection of reviews by ordinary users.

Slow focusing

Some cameras are slow to focus (Fuji and Nikon Coolpix, amongst others, have been guilty of this). Look for comments about this when looking at reviews, because it often prevents you from getting the perfect picture in a moving situation, and the delay in firing can cause blur due to camera shake.

Bridge Cameras

Buttons and wheels

Bridge cameras, being bigger than compacts, generally will have a mode button on the top, but the same consideration applies as for compacts – the more changes that can be made without recourse to menus the better.

Optical Zoom is better than digital

Due to the slimness of compacts, there is very little difference between models as to how much zooming is done optically. However, there can be a wider difference with bridge cameras. Optical zoom means it is all done by the lens, which means the more the lens extends the greater the optical zoom (rather like a telescope). To enable you to zoom in further, the camera crops the image, so you are only looking at the centre of the picture the lens actually sees (similar to when you use the zoom slider looking at a photo on the computer). Hence, with digital zoom you only record the pixels, in the centre and spread them over the whole, meaning a reduction in resolution. Therefore, all other things being equal, a camera with 4x optical and 14x digital zoom, would produce better zoomed in photos, than one with 3x optical and 15x digital.

The comments for compact cameras can also apply to some bridge cameras.

DSLR Cameras

You are spending more money, so looking for good advice via websites and camera magazines is that much more important. Canon and Nikon are the biggest sellers these days, but in the case of both, some models are slated and others get highly rated. Consider the buttons and wheels as for compacts and bridge cameras, and go for the one that feels the most comfortable to handle.

Is there a good selection of extras available?

You are bound to want to add lenses, flashes etc. later on. Often third party items are just as good or better, and maybe cheaper, than the manufacturer’s own products. Check the prices and availability from makers such as Tamron and Sigma for items for the camera you are looking at. They all, however, will make versions of all their items for Nikon and Canon cameras.

Summer is one of the best times to be in Toronto. Restaurant patios are bustling, the lake breeze is cooling the waterfront and people are generally in a party mood. There are many things to do in Toronto in July 2017 if you are thinking of visiting the city. Here are some of our favourite Toronto events in July 2017.

Honda Indy Toronto 2017

The Honda Indy Toronto roars into the city from July 14-16, 2017. Fan Friday on July 14, 2017 is free admission as long as you make a donation to Make-A-Wish Canada. There are lots of activities other than the racetrack for excitement. The Honda Speed Zone features interactive games with Toronto sports teams while Honda World includes face painting and racing simulators. Children ages 6-12 can learn about proper safety gear, as well as how to ride in a safe environment at Junior Red Riders.

Summerlicious 2017 is a food event where participating Toronto restaurants offer three-course prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner. This year, over 200 Toronto restaurants will participate. Toronto Festival of Beer

The Toronto Festival of Beer returns to Bandshell Park at Exhibition Place from July 28-30, 2017. Der Münchner Kapitalgeber Senovo gehörte jahrelang zu den ganz stillen Investoren des Landes. Dies ist seit dem vergangenen Jahr anders. Zwischen 300.000 und 1 Million Euro investiert Senovo gewöhnlich in Start-ups. Meist nimmt Senovo dabei an Investmentsrunden in einer Größenordnung zwischen 1 und 5 Millionen Euro teil. Pro Jahr plant das Senovo-Team bis zu sechs Investments. Der Kapitalgeber investierte in der Vergangenheit unter anderem in Atheneum Partners, Riskmethods und Shore. Seit 2016 ist auch Markus Grundmann, ehemals Target Partners, bei Senovo an Bord. Im VC-Interview mit deutsche-startups.de spricht Grundmann (Foto: links) über Banker-Perspektiven, Erfahrungen und Burn-Rates. Reden wir über Geld. Was genau reizt Dich daran, Geld in Unternehmen zu investieren? Ich arbeite unheimlich gerne mit Gründern und den Teams zusammen – vor allem, wenn spannende neue Technologie und innovative Produkte auf sich dynamisch entwickelnde Märkte treffen. Vermutlich liegt das daran, dass ich im Herzen eigentlich selber Unternehmer bin. Dagegen ist jeder Thriller oder Strategie-Beratungs-Projekt spannend wie Stricksocken von Oma. Start-ups sind die ultimative Challenge: liegst Du mit Deiner Markt und Produktvision richtig? Schaffst Du es den Markt als erster zu besetzen? Wenn man an diesen Fragen einmal Spaß gefunden hat kann man da nicht mehr loslassen. Aber kommen wir zurück zur Frage: Da es Cap-Table-Anteile leider nicht ohne Geld gibt, und Start-ups Cash brauchen, investieren wir Kapital zusammen mit unserem Einsatz und Know-How. Ich persönlich finde Startups aber nicht aus der Banker-Perspektive spannend, sondern aus der Gründer- und Operating-Perspektive. Wie wird man eigentlich Venture-Capital-Geber – wie bist Du Venture-Capital-Geber geworden? Bei mir war das Zufall. Eigentlich habe ich einmal in der Produkt-Entwicklung angefangen, während dem Dotcom-Boom. Damals sind viele Unternehmen an schlechten Business-Ideen und mangelnder Erfahrung gescheitert. Das wollte ich zuerst besser verstehen und bin in die Beratung gegangen. Dort habe ich in sechs Jahren von der System-Integration über Management-Beratung bis zur reinen Strategie-Beratung viel gesehen. Nach einem MBA in Cambridge, UK, wollte ich eigentlich als Produktmanager bei einem Münchner Startup, Scoreloop, anfangen. Das wurde aber an Blackberry verkauft und so bin ich mit deren Investor, Target Partners, in Kontakt gekommen. Dort habe ich als Associate unter anderem bei den Investments in Tado, Falcon.io und Dedrone das „VC-Handwerkszeug“ gelernt. In der VC-Welt wird oftmals mit Millionenbeträgen hantiert, wird Dir da nicht manchmal mulmig zumute – bei diesen Summen? Ja, das dauert eine Weile bis man sich daran gewöhnt – vor allem was sehr hohe Burn-Rates angeht. Es ist aber auch wichtig zu verstehen, warum das so ist: Start-ups können schnell wachsen wegen einer ungewöhnlichen Marktsituation. Meist ist das entweder technologisch bedingt – etwa da erst seit kurzem die Datenmengen und Verarbeitungskapazitäten für Deep Learning bestehen – oder aber durch eine Entwicklung auf Kundenseite – etwa der Verkauf von Millionen von Drohnen und keine geeigneten Schutzmaßnahmen im Falle von Dedrone. Natürlich wäre es effizienter wenn wir erst das Produkt in mehreren Schritten entwickeln und mit kleinen Usergruppen testen, um dann als nächstes möglichst effizient – sprich nacheinander – die Vertriebskanäle zu erschließen. Nur ist dann die Marketopportunity meist nicht mehr so attraktiv, da andere Marktteilnehmer eben schneller waren. Darum macht ein Start-up meist sehr vieles gleichzeitig – und das mit einem gewissen Grundvolumen. Das verstärkt positive wie negative Effekte und erzeugt dadurch mehr Potential für kostspielige Fehler. Um diese Lernkurve erfolgreich durchschreiten zu können, benötigt man eine gewisse Menge an Kapital. Wenn man sich jedoch einmal Abteilungs- oder Bereichsbudgets in der Industrie anschaut sind die Start-up-Budgets gar nicht so groß, sondern eher lean. Das erklärt auch, warum ein Startup ein erfolgreiches Produkt launchen kann, um dann nach einigen Jahren von einem Konzern gekauft zu werden: kulturell sind Großunternehmen eher auf Fehlervermeidung als auf das bewusste Eingehen von Risiken eingestellt. Für die Konzerne wäre die Lernkurve damit noch teurer und das Start-up ist ein attraktiver Übernahme-Kandidat. Was sollte jeder Gründer über Euch – als VC – wissen – wie etwa grenzt Ihr Euch von anderen Investoren ab? Wir haben einen Fokus auf B2B-SaaS-Investments. Wir haben bewusst einen engeren Fokus gewählt, da so klarer ist welche Investments wir wirklich suchen. Das schafft Transparenz für Start-ups, die mit uns im Gespräch sind, und macht bei uns die Ressourcen frei. Dadurch können wir uns auf die Themen konzentrieren, die wir am spannendsten finden und das Portfolio am meisten voranbringen. Intern sind wir dabei so aufgestellt, dass jeder Partner neben seinen Investment-Tätigkeiten einen funktionalen Teil verantwortet. Wir finden das sehr wichtig, und haben das darum ganz bewusst auf der Partner-Ebene verankert und nicht „weg delegiert“. Bei Senovo bin ich etwa für das Thema Technologie und Produkt verantwortlich. Welche Unterstützung bietet Ihr – neben Geld? Wir unterstützen die Gründer beim Aufbau ihres Unternehmens. Uns ist dabei wichtig, dass es wirklich “ihr” Unternehmen ist – sprich: die Gründer sind im “Driver Seat” und wir suchen eine Beziehung auf Augenhöhe. Wir haben bewusst eine Spezialisierung auf B2B-SaaS gewählt, so dass wir uns tiefer mit den einzelnen Problemstellungen und Learnings auseinander setzen können und diese besser übertragbar sind zwischen den Portfolio-Unternehmen. Zudem hilft uns der Fokus auch ein effektives Netzwerk für unser Portfolio zu schaffen, da alle gemeinsame Interessen haben. Was wir nicht tun ist die operative Verantwortung ähnlich zu einem Inkubator zu übernehmen, da wir uns nicht in so frühen Phasen engagieren, und da wir glauben, dass der Wert eines Unternehmens darin besteht die Herausforderungen selber in der Organisation zu beantworten und zu meistern. Wie entscheidet Ihr, ob Ihr in ein Start-up investiert: Bauchgefühl, Daten, Beides oder was ganz anderes? Beides: sich nur nach Daten zu orientieren ist riskant, da man nur auf die Vergangenheit schaut oder sich auf Prognosen verlässt. Nils Bohr – Nobelpreisträger in Physik – sagte einmal: “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.” Und das gilt erst recht für Technologien, mit denen wenig Erfahrung besteht und deren Einsatz in Märkten, die gerade erst entstehen. Letztlich setzen wir uns mit einem Unternehmer zusammen ins Boot und beteiligen uns am unternehmerischen Risiko. Da muss man auch an einer bestimmten Stelle sagen: Daran glaube ich, wir können zusammen gut arbeiten. Wir machen das jetzt und die Probleme werden wir gemeinsam lösen. Wie organisiert Ihr den Austausch mit Euren Portfolio-Firmen, welche Tools nutzt Ihr? Hauptsächlich agieren wir auf der Board-Ebene. Je nach Phase und den anstehenden Themen kann das bedeuten, dass wir uns von einem wöchentlichen bis zum quartalsweisen Rhythmus treffen oder zusammen telefonieren. Darüber hinaus vernetzen wir unsere Firmen auch untereinander entweder über gemeinsame Events, oder besser noch anlassbezogen, so dass der Overhead und die Ablenkung nicht überhand nimmt. Toolseitig integrieren wir uns in das was bei den Start-ups an Infrastruktur existiert bzw. am meisten Sinn stiftet. Derzeit sind das neben E-Mail und Handy hauptsächlich Slack, Skype, Join.me, Google Drive, Google Docs, Dropbox und Evernote. Nicht jedes Start-up läuft rund, nicht jedes wird ein Erfolg. Was macht Ihr, wenn eine Eurer Beteiligungen in Schieflage gerät? Wir versuchen gemeinsam eine Lösung zu entwickeln. Dazu gehört das Problem und die Ursache zu analysieren und dann einen Plan zu entwerfen. Zu einem guten VC gehört, dass er nicht nur da ist wenn die Firma toll performed, sondern dass er sich hier wertstiftend und kollaborativ einbringt. Das bedeutet im Übrigen auch, dass wir viel unserer Zeit mit eher komplizierten Cases verbringen. Ein Unternehmen, dass gerade super unterwegs ist und mit seiner Marktvision gut ankommt braucht in dieser Phase meistens zeitlich weniger Input, da es eher um Guidance, Strategie und Weichenstellung geht. Und woran merkt Ihr, dass Ihr bei einem Start-up die endgültige Reißleine ziehen müsst? Das ist eher ein Prozess und kann nicht mit einer harten Zahl beantwortet werden. Meist ist es eher so, dass initial ein Problem immer grösser wird. Irgendwann macht man einen Pivot oder hat einen „Backup-Plan“. Wenn dieser auch nicht funktioniert muss man sich schon fragen was denn eigentlich los ist: Gibt es wirklich den Markt und den Need für unser Produkt? Wenn wir das auch nach mehreren Anläufen nicht klar beantworten können müssen wir die „Reißleine“ ziehen. Das ist dann aber nicht überraschend und dieser Prozess bezieht alle Beteiligten mit ein. Es ist also das letzte verfügbare Mittel, das man nur bei einer gewissen Ratlosigkeit von allen Beteiligten zum Einsatz kommt – und nicht das erste. Gebt Ihr uns einen Einblick in Euer Anti-Portfolio – bei welchen, jetzt erfolgreichen, Firmen seid Ihr leider nicht eingestiegen? Wir haben zwei deutsche B2C-Unicorns abgesagt. Ich kann zwar nicht beurteilen, ob es letztlich zu einem Investment gekommen wäre, da ja auch die Gründer-Teams sich für uns hätten entscheiden müssen. Der Hintergrund war jeweils, dass es nicht so gut zu unserem Investment-Fokus gepasst hat und wir dann auch nicht viel unterstützen können außer dem reinen Kapital.
