deep apiarist -

they called to you: a distant buzzing hivehum reverberating through the City. they are the Hive, they say--a megaconsciousness, a defence network, grown from within the Spire. ten dozen glyph-marked bees crawled into your sinuses and built waxen bulwarks against the disorder within. you are a Deep Apiarist--one of a small sect of occultists who use the power of the Hive to work magic that manipulates order and chaos (p.41)

crispin sees themselves not as a single entity hosting the hive, but as a cell of the hive itself. they refer to themselves in the plural (we/us) and believe they were always meant to be a vessel for the hive. similarly they believe that the person, "crispin," as they existed pre-hive was ostensibly a placeholder; crispin is less an identity than a means of allowing others to more easily refer to them: a face, a mask, an alias.

heartsong -

when you sleep, you dream of the Heart. you're half-mad with glimpses of knowledge; mad enough to go ever deeper into the undercity, looking for revelations (p. 26)

the Heart has been calling to crispin all their life. three motifs have always manifested in their dreams:

swarms of insects

faceless entities--their would-be faces flat, blank, devoid of all features. every humanoid that appears in their dreams takes this form

an enormous, blood-red eye. this motif is shared by their clanmate/party member, another heartsong gnoll

their dreams led them down to the Heart, where they found the bees--or perhaps, where the bees found them. since then, the swarms in crispin's dreams are always and exclusively bees.

above all, the bees want to heed the Heart's call; to venture to its deepest levels and die there, one with it, for eternity. this incentivizes them to stay alive until then, lest a premature demise deprive them of the ability to go Home.

their concept is partially inspired by the irl apocephalus borealis parasite which alters the behaviors of bees. most overtly, crispin is (1) intentionally barreling towards their death and (2) unable to stand still. they're prone to pacing in small circles as an idle animation and often swing their head erratically while they speak. their speech is fragmented too--humanoid language is tricky for the bees--and often comes out stilted (ex: "not stay here. ground hungry. fast go now.")

gnolls -

hyena-headed people from the south with fur that covers their bodies. in the confines of the Heart, where the gaps between realities are thin, they can achieve unthought-of results in mechanoccultism (p.19)

minor abilities -

pheromone glans pucker and blossom on your wrists and neck; you are alluring, irresistible, almost soporific. once per session, when you talk to someone for five minutes or more, you convince them to revert to their basest impulses (p. 42)

major ability - annihilation:

your body is unHeart; it burns through the parasitic world of meat and bone. against Heartsblooded people or creatures, your touch functions as a weapon. as you use it, your flesh roils and cracks, but the swarm repairs it as quickly as it is unmade (p. 43)
