Vector Games

Games that used vector graphics drew the image by projecting electron beams onto the display, rather than using pixels to show the image. It was primarily used in early arcade games as a replacement for raster graphics, since at the time that form of display couldn't achieve the detail that vector graphics could.

Tempest is a relatively challenging 80s arcade game, which actually has a few similarities with my own game.

The games Vector graphics are one thing, though tempest used a special colored vector screen, which allowed the complexity of color a simple overlay couldn't achieve.

the other similarity comes with the controllers, tempest used a rotary controller to move the player to preselected areas around each level, and the dials on the pip-boy I'm using as an alternative controller choice for this project has a similar effect where each turn of the dial is separated into different sections that each press down on its bound key once.

Though i could never achieve the difficulty of a game like tempest, i hope that people could notice the control similarity with this and tempest.

Vectorblade is a Bottom Down shooter that was heavily inspired by the game, Warblade, which was also inspired by Galaga.

It features 100 levels of varying difficulty, along with 4 different boss fights, as well as plenty of bonus content, AND the ability to upgrade the players ship, as of when it was released to the public around the middle of 2020 and was (or still is) the largest game made for the Vectrex console, requiring at least 192K of ROM memory to run properly.

I myself am yet to play it but from footage of the game it seems incredibly addicting, as something like that should be, and shows off what is capable on the Vectrex.

Another game for the Vectrex console, Hyperchase has the player racing down a road, shifting gears and dodging traffic.

The game has 2 main modes, with the first being something akin to OutRun where you have to reach the end of the stage as fast as possible, and the second being a simple 'how far can you go' mode with limited lives and no time to beat.

The vectors in this game give the illusion of a long winding road, and that's something I find really cool about the game itself, the manual gears in such an old game also add to its coolness since it was originally released before OutRun was.

A Port of the arcade game under the same name, Berserk is a maze game which consists of the player fighting their way through different randomly chosen maze layouts

Though the Vectrex port of berserk wasn't complete as its original arcade counterpart, it included less maze layouts and missing features, but this could be seen as a result of what happens when something is ported to a new system with different functions and game rendering styles.

Atari's Star wars was another popular arcade game from the 80's, and was one of the earlier examples of color vector screens.

This game also included a somewhat unique controller, a 4-buttoned yoke controller, for individual shots of each of the x-wings blaster cannons.

The game consists of multiple stages consisting of TIE fighter combat, then flying over the death stars surface, and then flying through its equatorial trench, and repeats at a higher difficulty once all the stages are complete.

Asteroids was a 2D multidirectional shooter where the player is in an asteroid field and has to get as high of a score as possible by shooting the nearby asteroids.

The choice to use vector graphics with asteroids was decided when it was conceptualized by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg, where they decided to use the vector hardware designed by Howard Delman for Lunar Lander

Asteroid's addicting gameplay loop combined with its vector style made for an arcade game that was one of the first major successes of the golden era of arcade games, back in the mid-80s.
