What is Our Wonderland? a.k.a. the dumpster fire that is my ace-themed queer horror game or something
Our Wonderland is a visual novel / horror game / horrific dating sim??? / mangled mess of Fucked Up chars reaching their 30s but not? understanding who they are?? and twisted grisly things happen???
It stars five childhood friends with a sEcReT—they opened a Magical Wish-Granting Wonderland in their youth (as one does). Twenty years later, however, they've all turned into barely functioning adults just trying to Get By™, each with their own Traumas exacerbated by their struggles to fit in to a cis- hetero- allonormative world (as well as Pining,,, lots and lots of unrequited Pining). Cue a Return to Wonderland. What could happen now that they're all Verifiable Messes with the power to wish for anything they want??? omg,,, maybe they'll eat each other or something wouldn't that be wild omg,,,
The Woobies
Iggy: Resident Ace Bean that has no idea what he wants and spends most of his time Confused and Overwhelmed and avoiding social situations like the plague; just wants to fit in and for everyone to be Happy™
Genzou: The loud-mouthed snarky Best Friend who loves his favorite pal so much dear god do not touch a hair on his god damn head or he will fucking murder you (definitely Not Gay why would you even think that shm,,,)
Orlam: Nobody likes him he's just kinda there accumulating more and more Debilitating Trauma dear fucking lord is this guy sad and lonely somebody please l-l-love him; forlorn bisexual who longs to be the Life of the Party (may or may not be a cannibal, who can say really,,,)
Gidget: Just your average girl who wants to be Perfect™; did not ever wear boys' clothes or have issues with her body and definitely was never made fun of when trying to use the restroom; likes Iggy perhaps a little bit Too Much
Bucks: Homecoming queen and softball star; has everything she ever wanted in life—a loving husband, a beautiful baby, and a lovely house with a white picket fence; skilled with an Axe
What You Can Expect From This Atrocity:
Around 288k words of Pure Unadulterated Pain (20 to 25 hours or something idk)
A ridiculous 520 CGs because I apparently Can't Stop Drawing
Some pretty sweet cinematic ending sequences I guess
A cool soundtrack??? I did not create it but I've been told it's Good so we'll just go with that
Gore mixed with feels mixed with moments that will make you want to RIP YOUR HEART OUT
A Strange and Deplorable art style that apparently grows on you or so I've been told
Gay people kissing or something
COMPLICATED LOVE SQUARES???
Horrible ace nightmares—BUT ALSO CATHARTIC ACE JOY???
Cannibalism
P.S. in case it wasn't obvious this game is rather Dark and contains many a horrible thing such as Murder, Torture, and the Eating of People (some of the arcs also tread somewhat heavily into Sexual Themes Territory, too, given all the overarching ace stuff), so please please please check the content warnings on the itch page before playing! It's def for mature audiences only.
Where You Can Download This Horrific Abomination From Hell:
Our Wonderland on itch.io (it's free omg!!111!!!!!1)
There's also some free side games ig:

ok so me and some friends have been talking about how much we loved greyson especially because of how meta it was and i wanted to ask if there was any more thought put into the show outside of canon, like who the characters are or about hsin and boyd watching it (like the plot point boyd predicted, that was so cute)
Hey! lol it is hilariously meta to have in there, isn’t it? haha
I don’t think we talked a ton about it beyond just generally what the plot would probably be based on the original story idea. I ended up getting super distracted multiple times in the course of trying to answer this because it got me curious to look back at old notes lol
!!!!!!! Oh my effing god - I legitimately thought we hadn’t talked much about the plot of the show itself but after searching around and remembering that apparently we spelled it Greyson some places and Grayson others I found way more info. (btw the Greyson is probably my fault more recently lol I spell gray as grey so I bet over time I flipped it in my head to being Greyson when it was probably Grayson canonically, but I can’t remember for sure what’s actually in the book itself)
ANYWAY I found a July 20, 2010 email string between “Sonny” and me about Grayson/Greyson with a lot more notes on the whole thing. So it turns out I do have some extra info, shockingly enough.
I put it beneath a cut in case of spoilers.
THIS IS DIRECTLY FROM MY EMAIL - SO IT IS GOING TO PROBABLY MAKE NO SENSE/BE CONFUSING AF/HAVE NO CONTEXT - also since it was just a regular chat back and forth we were kind of shooting the shit figuring it all out. just a forewarning :) only changes i made were clear spelling typos that made it a little confusing to not fix
+++++++++++++++++
July 20, 2010 emails figuring out Greyson/Grayson
8:49 am - email from Ais to “Sonny”
btw in grayson i thought of doing an homage to what we originally were going to have icos be, so i thought your one guy could be the one who has the lung sickness in there and we can have whoever we want as other characters. i imagine the one who lost everyone and is all violent to be cypress but he will have his real name, Akiva, because cypress is in my fantasy series. for some reason in my mind, the Feral is named Annika and she's basically a Feral by the end of the first season, and also some of the other characters who werent affected by the war as much probably are basically in middle class or nicer areas. so for some reason in my mind, there's a rich girl named Daphne (could be a different name) and at the end of the first season, she somehow got caught up with Annika (maybe kidnapped?) and the show's plot lines seemed to be implying Daphne will end up as a Feral eventually. im not sure if it'd be Daphne then that people think died at the end of the first season or if it would be someone else. regarding your character (was it Nate?) i think he had a sister didnt he? i thought maybe if he did, he thought she died in the war but actually she lived. she was at a friends house or something so he never saw what occurred with her and when he went there everything was destroyed and the bodies were too mangled and burnt to be identifiable. but maybe she doesnt remember anything or she's hurt in some hospital and recovering, and eventually they could run into each other but she may or may not know who he is. the only thing is i dont think we should have the secret agent aspect to Grayson but we could have one of the other characters be some vigilante or law enforcement person of some sort if we wanted. or we could leave that out altogether. i also completely arbitrarily chose 7 characters so you can increase or decrease as you like.
8:51 am - email from Ais to “Sonny”
also these are just random ideas for the series plot which isnt that important anyway so you can feel free to add/change/suggest/whatever... i just wanted to email you those general ideas before i could forget
8:53 am - email from “Sonny” to Ais
im kind of confused by people becoming ferals unless they were kidnapped and kept among them for long periods of times? because i implied that ferals were people who basically never left the wastelands after the war and became mentally and physically changed because of the way they live and what they saw, so i dont think it would make sense that someone "becomes a feral" unless theyve been kidnapped for some reason and held there for several years until they forget who they were/adapt to the life in the wastelands/bombed out cities. also though, the ones who live very far from working cities and towns are cannibals
9:00 am - email from Ais to “Sonny”
well originally i was thinking she'd be kept there for a long period of time but actually in the context of the show that wouldnt work. so maybe people just thought she was going to be killed by the ferals and eaten by the cannibals at the end of the first season. or she could have nothing to do with the ferals; it was just an idea. also, someone else couldve been in danger of dying in some more normal way, like just a fight with scavengers or something. maybe an unexploded bomb went off too, who knows. or they could also touch on the rebels and have some rebel attack put someone in danger or someone joins some rebel group. i dont really care, theyre all just random ideas im throwing out
9:04 am - email from “Sonny” to Ais
i dont care about what all happens but like you said, her being kept there for long enough time for that to happen wouldnt work on a show unless there was a time jump. i assume the show takes place soon after the war
9:05 am - email from Ais to “Sonny”
yeah so forget about the turning into a feral thing. the main thing was i just thought it could be kind of fun/cool to get in parts of the original icos idea
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rereading that now, I feel like I sound a bit bitchy in my replies on the feral stuff, even though in looking at it at this moment I think “Sonny”’s response makes total sense and I agree with “him” on that part of the email. No idea if I was feeling pissy/impatient that day and I truly was a bit tetchy in my replies, or if I was just super distracted writing or editing so I was being especially lazy about punctuation and paying attention to tone and accidentally made it sound a little more abrupt than I would if I were trying to be careful about that.
Anyway this seems to be the majority of the extra info I have on it.

final comments. hashtag justice for jin ling. also I made some memes for you all. uh. warning for cannibalism and sexual content
what a strange show of highs and lows. at some points offering beautiful scenes rich in pathos that brings one to tears, at other times awkwardly and jerkily animating the absolute stupidest and ugliest bullshit with the most wooden and stiff and lifeless characters imaginable. the bad scenes were laughably bad, and the good scenes were pretty good. the novel accuracies were distressing in one episode and incredible in another. if I had to give an overall rating I'd go 7/10, but personally my enjoyment of it on average was about a 4/10
I can see novel fans really liking this as a supplementary adaptation to the book, because most of its unfaithfulness stems from omission and scene rearrangement rather than changes, and the characters and plots are mostly loyal to the book's tone and dynamics and atmosphere
the few additions fit seamlessly into the setting and story, with the glaring exception of the little ones meeting in yiling that one snowy flashback scene. but plenty of people seem to like that scene, so maybe it's not an issue
there was some significant changes the donghua made. for one wwx had all his scars healed way back in s1 after the mos died. in the novel and drama, there was still one scar for jgy. novel/drama mxy WANTED jgy dead. why omit that? what drives wwx now? where's the urgency?
also the ending with jin ling was awful! jin ling not refusing zidian is a huge change I hated. it's SYMBOLIC. jin ling and wwx also got no interactions after he left the temple. after all those episodes of jin ling protecting him and wwx trying to look after him, they get no closing scene or farewell! jin ling doesn't even get his confusing, contradictory emotional response to caring about wwx, nor his upset over losing jgy to betrayal and death. the donghua did not do him justice!
the shuffled scenes are handled fairly well and I really enjoyed the structural changes at the end of s3 that gave wwx and lwj more romantic time together (even if lwj was drunk for part of the time 🙄)
I still don't know what they see in each other because wwx may be smart and good but he is most of the time an obnoxious asshole and lwj started being nice and smiling more but he spent so long as a passive fridge-man who doesn't listen to wwx or appear to give a shit about his happiness I don't know how this relarionship got here. but they have chemistry and clearly care about each other and sometimes that's all you need
I shan't forgive them for mangling the flashback arc post-sunshot so badly. not adapting the wen prison break should be considered a major failure on the part of the adaptation team. were they forced to make a very short season or something?
I guess it can stand okay as its own thing, though hampered by the serious cuts made. personally if I had ever been able to get past the design, I would not have been engaged with this story nor would have I cared much about its characters or the convoluted plot. but anyway the ending is pretty strong so I'm glad I stuck it through...but I would not have if it wasn't for cql
I know there are donghua-only fans out there but I found myself disappointed in the show given how many hilarious jokes and memes I've seen for it
actually I just think it's a show built for memes. I've made a bunch these past few weeks for it
I think a lot of donghua watchers were disappinted in or confused by cql, so I guess it goes both ways, lol. they are not the same story. I was frustrated by all the repetitive and annoying fight scenes, I didn't like any of the characters, I thought wwx's death scene was absurd and not very moving, I hated all the characters for being bland or irritating or barely existing, and I was missing the intense interpersonal drama of cql and the extended screentime for minor characters. donghua fans apparently disliked the extra scenes for minor characters, the intense dramatization of most scenes, and the changes made to how wwx died
speaking of wwx...I don't feel that this show did justice to him. novel wwx was balls to the wall. he was the most of everything at once. this donghua guy was plenty smart and vengeful and annoying enough but otherwise he wasn't as complicated or developed as I would have liked. he didn't quote poetry! he didn't seem especially well-read or well-rounded and he was even more obnoxious in some scenes than he was in the book. he wasn't fun or sympathetic enough to care about when he was being an asshole and he was an asshole a LOT. he inspires nothing in me but vague dislike. shame
I don't think his kindness or goodness was very well emphasized (that cut scene of him kneeling with wen ning so they'd be equal!) and I found his postres arc very bland and lacking. trying to put the past behind him, getting closer to lwj and protect jl is fine but there wasn't as much of an internal journey regarding his reputation or healing from his trauma (as emphasized the novel and the drama). I think a lot was missing from his character and nothing was added besides being into dc earlier and cool demonic lighting
also I'm so pissed we never got to see mianmian and her husband. why does this show hate women. see look I made a meme I was so mad
lwj never brought up lsz which is bad in all versions tbh but it still irks me here. at least in the novel you can kind of see that lwj doesn't want wwx indebted to him, and in the drama he at least says "well uhh there's something I have't told you" which is weak but it's something
despite jc going into seclusion I'm unsatisfied with how wwx left him. he had no...closure? jc yelled at him a lot and he left and later jc felt bad. wwx has no reason to believe jc cared about him, and he doesn't get anything else out of that interaction either. kind of a bummer. as I said before I find his non-reaction to horrific trauma extremely offputting and unrealistic
water reflection intro for jc and wwx. water reflection outro for wwx and lwj neat
I went back to my liveblogs for this post and found this. scathing
the way this entire sequence is utterly devoid of emotion or intimacy or chemistry. wow. a faithful adaptation
also since I mentioned it in some liveblogs, if anyone's worried, my youngest brother had a wonderful holiday and my mom toned it down. she's getting better at that
so about the romance...it didn't seem like an explicit confession scene was even necessary. I would have liked to see one, obviously, but the way they were interacting with each other it just seemed clear how they felt. so, unlike a dramatic confession scene that happened in the novel or that I've been envisiong for cql, it looks like they're just going to kind of slide into a relationship with relative ease compared to either of their counterparts. they just have to talk it out and they're kind of already there. I thought the second drunk scene was kind of dumb and I don't understand what happened in the cave but besides that they're chill. which is actually kind of a nice change
I still don't see how the donghua is considered more canon than the drama, but I do see it as canon, if not explicitly so. I think cql had to pull a lot of its punches and give nonromantic explanations for a lot of its scenes but it's still canon...like who decides when it stops being so? it is because of the name of the song? that wasn't even the confession in the book. the donghua ending isn't the same as the novel ending, and the book ending in't the only romantic ending possible
so anyway it's not a mutually decades-deep soulmate bond, and different from the drama and novel in a lot of ways, but nice and fairly easy. it's about time something was easy for them. there's not even that much miscommunication or dramatics this past season
though I'm not happy with how the homophobia of s1 and s3 were handled. wwx uses mxy's sexuality as a threat/joke and it's never adressed again except to imply mxy's been molesting his brother? jin ling implies that gay people are also into animals and wwx doesn't even respind to that? by the end it's fairly obvious they're together but it's just weird that if they're together they never show wwx coming to terms with his sexuality or even just talking about jin ling's assumptions. and of course they couldn't deal with wwx or lwj's sexuality directly like the book could have, so I would rather they just not have it at all, address it tactfully or indirectly, or even have wwx respond to it differently
oh wait hang on I remembered what I wanted to do for the wen chao and wlj revenge scene
yeah this show lends itself very easily to memes. I've made like, four already. no wonder there are so many in the fanbase
this show wasn't bad
