Reason: D.C. Parents Had Home Birth. 2 Years Later, They Still Can't Get a Birth Certificate.

Teresa and Jeff Williams had their son, JJ, at home without medical help. They didn't know it would be nearly impossible to get legal documents for him.

When Teresa and Jeff Williams decided to have an unassisted home birth, they had no idea they would be unable to get a birth certificate for their son nearly two years later. 

Despite sending a litany of documents to the Washington, D.C., Health Department, the agency has denied the Williams' requests for a birth certificate and Social Security card for their son, JJ. Now a toddler, the boy has no legal documents at all.

The Williamses live in southwest D.C. with their two young children. Teresa Williams told The Washington Post that she and her husband became interested in home birth after having negative experiences when seeking prenatal care while pregnant with their elder child.

"It was day and night. The midwives actually asked me what I wanted my birth experience to be like versus telling me what it would be like," Teresa Williams told the Post. "I was actually being heard, and I was actually in control of how the environment was for my child to be born."

The couple decided to have their daughter, Tamar, at home, assisted by a doula and a midwife. After Tamar's birth, a home birth company filed the necessary paperwork to get the newborn legal documents.

However, the couple opted to go medically unassisted for the birth of their son, JJ, two years later. When they tried to get a birth certificate for JJ three months after his birth, they learned that they would be required to submit extensive documentation to prove he was their son. 

Even though the couple say they submitted the required forms proving that JJ was born alive and in D.C. and that Teresa Williams was pregnant in the first place, the city denied their application. The Health Department told them they could bolster their application with additional medical documents, but because JJ was born at home without medical supervision, the Williamses didn't have the necessary paperwork.

Without a birth certificate and other documents for their son, the Williams say they have lost nearly $5,000 in tax credits. The family is also low-income and says they worry about losing food-stamp benefits if JJ's lack of documents is discovered. As a last resort, the couple has been forced to hire a lawyer and file a request for a judge to order JJ a birth certificate.

"It feels like I am an absentee father even though I am here," Jeff Williams told the Post. "I can't physically show that my son belongs to me because I have no document. And I might now have to go to court to prove my fathership to my child. And I have been here since day one. I haven't left."

How to make patches with images

What you need:

Fabric(I highly recommend white fabric)

Transfer paste

Printed photos

Paintbrushes

Scissors

Water

transparent glue or transparent wood finish

About Transfer Paste

I bought mine from a local craft store, but if you buy one online that's good too. Either way make sure your transfer paste is suitable for fabric!!!!!!

1.Printing out your images

I took some higher quality images of what I wanted and pasted them in a Word documment and then I mirrored them and scaled them.

When you look for images to print, try looking for higher quality ones, because the quality of the photo will automatically go down a bit when you print it on paper.

ALSO IF YOUR IMAGES HAVE TEXT ON THEM DON'T FORGET TO MIRROR THE IMAGES!!!!!!!!!!!

For scaling:

album covers work really well as 9x9cm

also don't make your images smaller that 8x4cm, because they will be too small and the details will be lost

when you are scaling the images have a ruler near you so you can actually see the measurements and is also easier to decide the size of the photos

Now that your images are scaled, mirrored and printed is time to cut them!

2.Putting your images on fabric

About the fabric:

I used white jeans for the fabric because the denim is harder than shirt fabric for example and is easier to work on. Also I recommend white fabric because the images will look better than if you were to put them on coloured fabric. But if you don't have white denim you can use white shirt fabric but it will be harder to put the image on because the shirt fabric streches.

You could look at thrift shops for some cheap white denim pants and use those :)

Now you gotta take your fabric and apply a kinda thick (because the fabric will absorb it) layer of transfer paste on the place you will put your image face down on, kinda like this:

And then you leave it to dry. I suggest levaing it to dry overnight to make sure is completely dry.

3.Getting rid of the paper

After the paste has fully dried, put some water on the fabric and use your finger to scrub the paper off. Don't press too hard because the image will rip, but also try to scrub off as much paper as you can.

After you scrubbed as much paper as you could, go rinse the fabric with water and then let it dry.

Something I want to warn ya'll about is that the image may rip in some place and there isn't much you can do about it, but try not to press too hard when scrubbing off the paper anyway

4.Coating it with glue/wood finish

After you let it dry you will notice that the image is kinda foggy, because you can't get all the paper off without ripping the image.

Get some glue or wood finish(make sure they dry transparent) and a paintbrush and put some on the image,and then ley it dry.

After it dried,cut the excess fabric from the patch and you are done!!

Note: When it will dry, the image will still be a bit foggy. Also the patch will have a leather like texture.

Hey. I'm gonna rant for a second.

I wrote this post before, so I'll be brief.

What I want to rant about in this post is essentially, don't give your time to people who don't deserve it.

There has been a certain someone who I won't mention because I refuse to give them the satisfaction, but they've been plaguing our community for quite some time now and let me just say, don't bring that shit over here yet AGAIN. I'm pretty certain you can guess who it is by now.

There are so many talented, kind, amazing people on this community who deserve your attention and time.

And there's people who don't.

Don't argue with them, don't speak to them because nothing you say or do will make them change. Don't argue with them, and if you did, you just effectively wasted your time. I've fought people on the internet so many times and I'm here to tell you to not do that. It's FRUITLESS. I could have easily spent that time playing the game or hanging out with people who actually deserve my time.

If you see them, block them, ignore them and just generally disregard them completely. Let's not have a repeat of that one situation where one of the ambassadors had to take it upon themselves to make a whole ass positivity MOVEMENT within the community because this person just had to come and fill our loving community with hate and toxicity. Let's NOT have a repeat of that, ever. Do not give these people the power to ever alter the kindness of our community.

They want an emotional response out of you, do not give them that satisfaction.

Recently, governors of Southwest states came together to set up a security outfit called Amotekun to check insecurity in their region. This comes as the national security architecture seems overwhelmed, but the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said it is unconstitutional. What is your take?First and foremost, a line has been drawn among most conscientious and not reasonable Nigerians. A line has been drawn on the question of the desire or otherwise of what people call state police. The agitation for state police started from the Southwest. It was purely political; it had nothing to do with security. It started long before this Fourth Republic and the main purpose for the agitation for state police was that some political elements among the elite of the Southwest believe that somehow they would be in a position to exercise political power to their own satisfaction, unless they control those elements of national police, particularly the police and the secret services. So, they kept on the agitation until this republic, especially from 2009 when the security situation became much dire with the emergence of Boko Haram. So, if people are concerned they are justifiably concerned, because this is nothing new but a rediscovery of an old agenda, which is tied up with the idea of seceding, because they have gotten everything they wanted from Nigeria. They control the economy. But the idea that you can now carve out law and order in other areas and then create a super police, which is neither federal nor state, is, in my view, fraudulent; it is mischievous, irresponsible and they imagine that the country is going to take it lying down? I think they have made a very serious mistake. So, coming back as an afterthought, they said they did not even mean to confront the Federal Government. It is neither there nor here; it is sheer nonsense. If they like let then go and confront the Federal Government; the Federal Government is not afraid of them.But I hope the Federal Government learns its own lessons, because you don’t make policies by opening your mouth to say ‘go do this or don’t do this’. Go back to the law; many of them are lawyers. If they don’t understand that the law itself is supreme and as far as possible we should follow the law, as provided, before we do anything reckless, because this idea of Amotekun was an act of recklessness. Those who are at the forefront of the Amotekun, while in Abuja they are APC, but whne they go back to their respective states, they are something else. So, it shows you that these people are actually unreliable. If care is not taken they will drag us into another civil war and I don’t believe the country can survive another civil war.

I reserved a rental car in California with Enterprise. The price was $9.99/day because of a weekend deal . When I checked in at the counter the agent told me that I needed to either provide proof of FULL COVERAGE insurance or purchase their insurance (which would raise my daily rate from $9.99 to $40)!! If I didn't do either then they wouldn't let me rent a car. I thought that was ridiculous and decided not to rent a car. It jumped from 37 to 60 and we were pretty outraged and so have been shopping around.
