I wish I had thought of posting this sooner: if you feel like you have to stay because of your pets, those lists do say which shelters are pet friendly. My best friend did run into the problem of a shelter being willing to accept her dog but not her bird (she has found somewhere to stay now). Here are some general tips on how to evacuate with pets:
If you will need to go to a pet friendly shelter during an evacuation, make sure you have the following items ready to go for your pet: a leash and collar, a crate [or carrier for cats or smaller pets], a two-week supply of food and water, your petsâ vaccination records and a current rabies vaccination tag, medications, and written instructions for feeding and administering medication. If your favorite four-legged friend is feline, be sure you bring kitty-litter and an appropriate container, too.
You may not have all of these things (like records) at hand, but as a general rule, try to gather anything your pet uses on a daily basis. I know some of this seems obvious, but sometimes people can just shut down because they get overwhelmed and canât think through what to do, so they just stay. I wish Iâd thought to look this up and post it days ago, but maybe this can help people make some last minute decisions.
If you canât find a shelter that will take certain animals (I donât know the restrictions per se), this article about FEMA efforts suggest that even getting a few miles out of the hurricaneâs path can be safer. I donât know the Florida terrain well enough to tell you how to get to higher ground, but even a parking lot miles inland north or south may be safer than your home near the coast. But be careful about getting caught in your car in the storm surge flooding, I donât want to lead you astrayâlisten to experts, not me; these are last-ditch ideas we had to spitball yesterday (me on the phone in a different state) when things looked bad.
Anybody who has more info or better ideas for evacuation with pets or last-minute safety, please chime in.

So. Right now.
Working on potty training, which I have been told Pyrs are easy to potty train because they like just hanging out outside anyhow. This is great because potty training is one thing I don't like having to train.
Making sure he's got plenty of mental stimulation, so he's got a lickmat, a couple Kong toys that are the right size and hardness for puppy mouths, and some smaller tennis balls. He's also taken to a rope toy my roommate's dog never play with, so that's Baymax's now.
Immediate work stuff though is:
Controlled socialization/exposure to common occurrences and variety of people.
Learning About Vacuums.
Grooming exposure (brush, comb, ear cleaning and teeth brushing supplies, nail trimmers, having his paws, ears, mouth, and eyes handled).
Following me.
Leash and collar exposure.
Crate training.
Doing super short sessions every time I take him out to use the bathroom, so every hour give or take, doing just five minutes, letting him sniff around some more and seeing if he needs to use the bathroom a bit more, then another five minutes.

Mechanic AU - 6
Kyoutani x f!reader
<< Part 5 | Part 7 >>
Summary: The Subaru gets some upgrades. The boys are fun to work with.
Word Count: 3.4k
Warnings/Genre: some strong language, bitch (affectionately), some inappropriate jokes between the guys
a/n: smaller part, I think itâs still fun tho, car time, Kyoutani, Tanaka and Noya, some Keishin thrown in. Fun stuff. Next part just needs edited so it should be up within a week - lots of warnings for part 7 so please read them
Part 6: Uwubaru
Inspired by some of the cars from the meet up you went to with Kyoutani last week, you picked up a few new cosmetic pieces for your WRX. You had ordered a couple of things before the meet that have since arrived, waiting for you to install them. Now that you have a day off and the weather is clear, what better time to get on it.
Some of what has arrived is being stored at Karasuno Auto, thanks to Keishin being so nice. He also doesn't mind you using the shop for your own car after hours - a bonus when you live in an apartment with outdoor parking.
What parts you have at home, you carry out to your car. Itâs not quite closing time at the shop yet, but you figured thereâs no harm in getting things packed up now before heading back up to your room.
On your desk you lay out three samples of vinyl wraps. Wrapping the car isnât happening anytime soon, but you thought you could at least try to pick something out. There are three colors that caught your eye, so you wanted to see them in person and they are just as pretty here in front of you as you thought theyâd be.
A dark burgundy in a satin finish - you picked this one thanks to falling in love with Kyoutaniâs dark green wrap. A bright teal, because why not. Bright colors are always fun options. And a blue-purple colorshift. Most of what youâre adding to your car today is carbon fiber parts, so youâll want a color that fits well with that.
>> From Ryuu: âwe are closing up nowâ
Is it that late already?
The time on your phone confirms itâs late afternoon, and the shop does close a little earlier on Mondays.
>> To Ryuu: âthanks! :Dâ
Pocketing your phone, you compare the pieces of vinyl spread out on your desk. Youâre not set on any of them yet, but that doesnât matter. You have plenty of time after all.
âIndigo!â You call out for your dog. Your boss has no problem with dogs in the shop, as long as theyâre well behaved. Tendou is out, so why leave your baby crated at home when you can bring him with you - you can keep each other company.
The large dog happily trots alongside you to the door before he starts getting excited. You pick up his leash from its designated spot and he sits still to let you clip it to his collar, tail thumping excitedly on the wooden floor. âLetâs go!â
Packing everything into your car ahead of time was a good idea. Letting you get into your car and head straight through town and to the shop with no time wasted.
Instead of parking in the back as usual, you pulled in front of the garage door closest to your work area. Leaving Indigo in the car temporarily as you head around to the back door to let yourself in, and make your way through the building to the garage, flipping on lights along your path.
Opening a single bay door, youâre met with your favorite sight, your dog and your car. You make quick work of pulling into your bay of choice, and opt to leave the door half-closed so Indigo can watch the liveliness outside for entertainment.
Starting off with something simple, you grab the side skirts and a few tools you're sure youâll need. Laying down on the cold concrete next to one side of your car, you get to work.
When youâre halfway through adding a diffuser to the rear end, your phone dings. Luckily itâs within arms reach, so you donât have to crawl out from under the car and disturb the dog resting between your legs.
>> From Kyoutani: âwhatâs up?â
Smiling at the screen as you hold it close to your face with the minimal room around you due to the low height you lifted your car to. Why stand and work when you can lay down and work at your own pace. You sit your phone next to tools youâre not currently using and tap the screen until youâre calling Kyoutani.
Heâs slow to answer your call, but you pay it no mind and use the opportunity to drill another screw in place.
âHello?â
âHey! Thought Iâd just call. Got my hands full.â You trade the drill for a screwdriver to make less noise. Youâre aware of how unpleasant power tools can sound when right in your ear.
âOh, donât worry about it if youâre busy. I was just wondering if youâre free.â
You fumble the screwdriver and it clangs against the ground on contact. âAh, no, no. Itâs cool. Iâm just fucking with my car is all.â
âIs that what that is? Thought a pro wouldnât drop shit so much.â
You scoff at the playful jab. âThought wrong, bitch. Iâm clumsy as fuck.â
âIâve noticed.â
Tightening down the last screw, the rear diffuser is now secured in place. You softly giggle as you crawl out from under the car, being sure to drag your tools out loudly with you.
Phone in hand, you stand back to look at your handy work.
âWhat are ya fucking up on your car anyway?â
âHopefully not much. Iâm glad to get this done finally though. Glad my boss doesnât care if I use the shop; doing this outside wouldâve sucked,â you trail off on the last few words.
âThatâs nice of them.â
âYeah,â you lay your phone near the front of the car and grab the boxes your fog lights are in, âIt is. I should thank him again..â
Kyoutani chats with you while you install the fog lights and front lip made of carbon fiber to match the side skirts. And with those finished up, youâre down to items you could use a second pair of hands for. Instead of dragging someone out here last minute, you call it quits for the night and clean up your mess so the guys wonât complain when they come in tomorrow.
You finally take your friend off speakerphone and bring your phone to your ear. You give your car one last look over now that itâs back on its wheels again. âWell. I think thatâs gonna be it for tonight. Iâm kinda getting tired anyway.â
âYouâre not too tired are you?â
âNope! Iâll let you know when I get home.â
âAight. See ya.â
You walk through the shop and make sure everything is locked up and the lights are out before returning to the car and letting Indigo hop into the back. Starting up the engine, you check your phone while you give your car a minute.
>> From Kyoutani: âhow do u like your coffee?â
A smile graces your lips. âHey, Indy. Why donât I get you home to Tori realâ quick.â
Looking at the dayâs schedule youâre pleased to see you will be working with Tanaka and Nishinoya. Kiyokoâs out today, but you see a certain blond is sitting at the front desk in her place.
As you push away from the computer, Keishin speaks up, âIf those two get to be too much, smack âem. Or come get me.â
You shoot your boss a small smile and a forced giggle as you walk around him. Watching his lips curl into a smirk when you playfully murmur, âYes, Sir.â
And what would you know, the boys are at it all ready. You walk towards your workbench and see that Tanaka is under a truck and Noya appears to be energized as ever.
âWhat are ya doinâ down there?â The smaller man places a hand against the truck as he peers under it.
âOh, ya know. Fuckinâ around,â Tanaka says, poking his head out from under the truck to look at Noya who squawks at his words.
The two laugh loudly and Tanaka adds, âWanna join me?â
âNah, better not. Think Iâm good.â Noya taps the truck before heading off elsewhere.
You can only chuckle at the two.
Watching Noya walk out one of the bay doors, your phone buzzes, getting your attention. It's Koganegawa letting you know he has an appointment today for those rear brakes. You quietly mumble to yourself, âI wonder if theyâve started grindinâ yet.â
âHey!â Tanaka, no longer under the truck, is waving you over. âDude, Iâm filthy. Care to drive this out for me?â
You hum and look at the sorry state of his clothes. âI guess. Do you have something to change into?â
âI think I do in my car. Probably. Hopefully.â He scratches his head, unknowingly getting grease into the short little hairs as he leaves the shop.
Once the truck is parked out in the lot, you bring the keys back to Keishin where he seems to be ringing out a customer.
The customer eyes you before catching sight of the keys you drop into Keishinâs hand. âAh! You have my keys then. Say, you work out there?â
You glance at the door to the garage. âUhm, yes sir.â
âHell yeah!â He reaches a fist towards you expectantly, a toothy grin reaching his eyes. âWe need more women in this industry.â
âUh, thanks!â You bump your fist against his and turn for the door. âWell, I better get back to work.â
Back in the garage, Noya is hopping out of a Subaru Outback and Tanaka is standing in front of it with his hands on his hips. You join him in looking at the front end of this SUV. Half of the grille is banged up and crinkled, a headlight is in a sorry state, the fender and bumper near it are cracked.
âThey got in an accident on their way to work, I guess,â Tanaka states.
You cross your arms and nod. âI think itâll buff out.â
Tanaka laughs and walks off.
âHey, whereâre ya goinâ?â
He stops and turns to you. âTo help Noya with it.â
âWhat are ya doing to it anyway?â Your eyes trace over the damage. This garage isnât a body shop, but it sure could use going to one.
âWeâre taking care of that mess of a front end,â he calls from the other side of the doorway.
âBut we don't do body work..â
Noya pops through the doorway with a box of things. âYeah, but they have parts to replace most of the damage, so weâre just gonna swap what we can.â
âIs it going to match?â You watch him toss the box down, the contents rattling.
âNope! But that's not my problem.â
Shaking your head with a laugh, you pop the hood to get a look at any hidden damage under there.
Before you know it, it's time for Koganeâs appointment, and of course he requests you. It's not that he doesn't trust the other guys. He just likes to chat with you while you work, as well as tell people his good friend works on his car.
Just like last time, he sits on a stool, hovering over you as you work. This time, trying to guess whatâs next in between telling you about work, friends - and then Kyoutani.
Koganeâs knees bounce with his usual bubbly smile, showing sparkling teeth. âYou guys still talking any? You are, right?â
Ratchet in hand stops momentarily, attention drawn from your current task. âYeah. Why?â
âI just-â The pro setter looks around the room as if searching for a response to what would be a simple question. âI just.. Think it's really cool that we have another friend in common. Thatâs all, yeah.â
Eyebrows drawing together at his stammering, you slowly return to the job at hand. âYeah?â
âYup!â He watches you tentatively before going on, âHave you, like, hung out or anything since your last little outing?â
Throwing parts of the old brakes on the ground, you answer without a second thought. âYeah, last night.â
Maybe it's the wheels on the stool, but it's like he teleported into the side of his car.
âCareful!â You hiss.
âSorry!â He leans away from the car and towards you instead, making you eye him wryly. âLast night, huh?â
â..Yeah. He invited me out for coffee after I told him I was tired.â You knock away the rest of the old parts, avoiding his uncomfortable staring.
âSo.. Like a coffee date?â
You rear up from your spot, putting a pause to fighting with a stubborn part while installing the new brakes. âNot a date. Just as friends.â
âIf I asked you if you wanted coffee after you told me you were tired, would you consider that a date?â Your words come out calm, but your movements don't quite match. You aggressively snap more parts in place. Why does this one have to be more difficult than the one you did on the other side?
He hums in thought, or maybe defeat. âNo. I guess not.â
While you finish up that side, heâs oddly quiet. It feels strange, so you break the silence with the first thing that comes to mind. âHey, Nobu get the truck looked at?â
âNo, it still sounds like shit.â
You snort. Apparently you're not the only one getting frustrated with the truck situation, or namely Aone dodging you two and not getting it taken care of. Quietly, you try to think of something you can do to resolve the problem.
âWhat if.. you bring it in?â You suggest, standing with Koganeâs brakes finished and wheels returned to their rightful place. âYou know his info for the truck?â
âHeâs not going to go for that or he would have already.â
âNo, like.. What if you just bring it in and I just look at it?â
âI don't think heâd be happy about that.â He watches his car as it lowers back to the ground, nudging lift arms out of the way for you once the lift stops.
âMaybe, but have you ever seen him mad?â You laugh softly, returning to the back wheels once more.
âOnce.â
You whip your head his way. âReally? Heâs like a big teddy bear. And he's so soft spoken.â
âWell, it's rare, but possible,â he deadpans.
âHuh. What was it over?â You ask, face scrunched in disbelief.
He clasps his hands together, rubbing the fingers of one hand against the back of the other. âNot really my business to tell.â
You nod affirmatively, not wanting to press further, even if youâre curious. âFair that.â
âIâm still determined though. Anyway, your car is pretty much ready.â You pat the roof like a salesman.
âSweet! Thanks again. Weâll figure something out for Nobu.â
Tanaka walks with you into the garage, helping you carry parts and tools to a 2002 âBugeyeâ WRX that youâre about to replace the exhaust on. Lots of banging and clanging can be heard from under a truck next to the car and Nishinoya yells out, âI fucking hate trucks!â
You and Tanaka both stop in your steps, your laughter echoing off the solid walls of the garage. Looking each otherâs way with shit eating grins.
âDoesnât he have a truck?â You ask Tanaka even though you know the answer.
âYeah.â He sets a few things down on a tray for you and grabs his phone from his pocket, checking the time. âAight, Iâm gonna head out.â
You glance up at him from your new spot on the floor, hands unwrapping the new shiny pieces. âLunch? Coming back, right?â
âEhh. Weâll see. See ya!â
âSee ya.â You look at the Bugeye WRX from where it sits on the lift. âOkay..â
Letâs get started.
Bugeye in the air and secure, you step under the car and look over the current pipes running along the center and to the driver side rear. Luckily for you, the exhaust appears to be stock or at least the equivalent. But the bolts on the mid pipe are rusted and seized. Even after spraying them down they fail to budge. You pop a wrench over the hex nut and a breaker bar on the bolt head to see if that does the trick.
Nope, not budging. Frustrated, you drop the tools and place your hands on your hips, shooting a dirty look at the stubborn bolts.
âNoya!â
âYes?â
You startle as the small man jumps beside you. With a sigh you wave a hand at whatâs causing you trouble. âHelp. I canât get it off.â
He half holds back a giggle and smiles, mischief glimmering in his eyes, âI wanna say something, but Iâm not. I want to, but I donât know if I should.â
You only shake your head, holding back a smile while you watch him make quick work of the rusty hardware and even crack the others loose while heâs at it.
He turns to you and drops the breaker bar in your open hand. âThere you go!â
âThanks.â You move on to removing all of the now loosened bolts from the midpipe, leaving it and the muffler hanging from rubber hangers.
âSo, are you just swapping out the catback or going for the whole exhaust?â
Glancing at him you see him smiling at you. âCatback. She ordered it through us and now Iâm installing it.â
âHuh. Simple enough.â He stops watching you pull the old exhaust free from the car, and crouches over the new one on the ground, looking it over. âAre they going quieter? Isnât that kinda backwards?â
You chuckle, sitting the old muffler and pipes aside. âGuess so. But the Hush still gives that nice boxer rumble, so itâs not a bad choice.â
Inspecting the old, rusty system thatâs now on concrete, you chew your lip. Realizing now that you didnât ask the client what they wanted done with it once off the car. âI donât know if they were keeping this or what.â
âJust stick it in the back,â he suggests as if it's the obvious answer.
You hum. âYeah. Good plan.â
You lucked out installing the new system. Things lined up as expected for once, making the job easier for you. The adapter that was ordered to fit the new and old pipes together worked, so there was minimal modifying needed.
Back on the ground, you reach into the WRX and start it up. You let it run for a bit and warm up so you can hear how itâs really going to sound. Once the idle smooths out, you listen to the low rumble reverberating from the tailpipe before getting in the car and revving the engine a few times, and itâs like music to your ears. Youâre sure the customer will be happy too.
This little project is the last for you today, so after getting the car parked in the lot you head inside to where Keishin is working.
Walking up to the front counter, you drop the keys on the countertop. âThe â02 WRX. Didnât see anything about what to do with the old parts, so I just put them in the back. If they donât want âem, I can go grab them.â
Keishin looks up from the newspaper he was reading, a cigarette hanging from his lips. âThanks, Y/n. Iâll let âem know.â
You push the keys his way as he fails to be as quick as Kiyoko to grab them, but before you can pull away his fingers graze your own. Catching your eye, he pulls the cigarette from his lips and speaks quietly, âHave any plans for later?â
Your eyes quickly search the empty room before snapping back to him and you lean in, pulling your hand back to your side. âYeah,â you lie. âI better go clean up so I can get going. See ya, Keishin.â
Back in the garage, you find a stool next to your workbench and take a seat. You donât have much to take care of before you can leave. Really, it was just an excuse to pull yourself away from Keishin before you get any ideas.
You pick your phone up from where you had tossed it into an open toolbox and send Tanaka a few texts to give him shit about not returning from lunch.
A loud roar has your head snapping up from your screen to see Noya pull in a familiar 2003 Nissan 350Z. The bubblegum pink, the heart-shaped tsurikawa hanging from the passenger visor, and various stickers and decals - no doubt this is one of the cars you saw at the Subaru meet up a week ago. The meet you briefly met up with Kyoutani at after Koganegawa basically made him ask you to go. Though he didnât seem particularly bothered by it. In fact, the two of you have been friends since.
With the fresh memory dancing in your head, you snap a photo of the pink car to send to Kyoutani, then quickly put things away so you can clean yourself and head home for the day.
âSee ya later, Noya!â

Watching Canine Intervention so you don't have to.
It's so very bad. Do the world a favour and do not give this show any more views. In fact join a petition to have it removed from Netflix.
Right off the bat you can't even get through the intro without a pack leadership comment. For those of you who don't know, any trainer who tells someone they need to be a 'Pack Leader' or assert their dominance over a dog, is a trainer to be avoided. These are huge red flags, telling you this person is working using very outdated and disproven, and potentially harmful tactics.
EP 1: Lady Macbeth
I'm going to preface this by telling you it took me multiple tries to get through this episode. I didn't make it 10 minutes into the episode my first try because around the 8 minute mark was the very first interaction between dog and trainer and it was so unprofessional I literally turned it right off. Here's why.
He enters the home knowing this dogs behaviour already, no trainer or behaviourist is going to walk in blind. The dog is crated upon entry to the home because she reacts to strangers approaching her and the owner especially with the intent to touch. This dog is in her safe place and is calm and this is how the trainer approaches.

As he approaches you can see the dog side eye him, you can see the whites of her eyes even in the above photo. These are already blatant signs of discomfort to any professional worth their salt. But he gets closer anyway, towering over her and sticking his hand up to the crate door to provoke a reaction. Which he gets. Something he didn't need to do already knowing her background. He is just causing her undue stress. The only thing he did right here was approaching with his side turned making him slightly smaller, but it's for not when he towers over her.
He has the owner remove her from the crate and initiate play, then he goes and provokes her again multiple times in a row. Reaching out to her and in one instance even stomping his feet (a blink and you'll miss it situation), and then charging her and running away in turn. This dog is confused. I'm fucking confused as to what the point of all this is and how it's suppose to help.
There's one thing I keep thinking as all this is going on. This dog is getting frustrated and is going to redirect. This owner, who has yet to be told not to hold the dog or stop hugging her or putting his face and hands by her face and throat is going to get bitten. And sure as shit she grabs the owners face.

The trainer goes on this huge spiel about positive reinforcement but the next session he has with her is absolutely mass confusion. I'm again left absolutely befuddled as to what he intends to teach the dog by yelling no in its face with a tug to the leash and then following up with praise.
He then takes the dog to his facility removing it from the home. As a kennel worker I know that taking a dog out of the home and putting it into a pound or shelter is incredibly stressful on that animal, she is going to need days if not weeks just to settle. There is no reason why she couldn't stay at home mind you other than it does one thing. It forces the dog to rely on him for all of its needs to be met. It's forcing a bond, reducing her likely hood of lashing out.
He talks a good game about getting her stimulated and excited and dopamine counter acting anxiety, but as someone with anxiety I know quite frankly being excited and being anxious honestly feel so similar it's hard to tell them apart sometimes and I'm not a dog getting incredibly mixed signals from someone pulling on my throat with a shoelace, and towering over me.

He introduces another "handler" and at this point they are just dragging the dog around and forcing it to comply to commands and forcing her to allow touch. Even the camera crew is confused because they don't seem to know where to look and it starts giving me motion sickness.
Also, I bet you all thought I was exaggerating when I said a shoelace right? Well I was, but I also wasn't wrong. I flipped fucking shit when I realized he literally was using a shoelace as a collar on her.

The end of her time at his facility they show her miraculous turn around. By showing her interact with . . . His staff. So people again she's been forced to bond with. They introduce her to one other person where the trainer immediately takes control of the dog and recognizes that she is still going to lash out and pushes the other person away. Which good on him for preventing an attack on the gentleman, but at the same time, how could he expect any other reaction? Then as he talks you realize, he did expect this reaction, he knows she is still a reactive dog to strangers. Which he again explains that she will continuously be a work in progress. He is not wrong. But he has also done nothing to mitigate her behaviour or make her feel more secure in my opinion. He taught her obedience training, but as for dealing with her actual behavioural issues, there didn't seem to be any progress. Especially any that couldn't have been done within the home, and I think he knows this.
He then hands the leash to the guy she almost just attacked. He has the man work the dog, giving her commands, feeding her treats, and then allows the dog to get in the guy's face and then laughs when the guy reacts as expected. Which is quite frankly still unprofessional.
In summary:
the trainer stressed a dog out unnecessarily and repeatedly, barely helped the dog overcome her behavioural issues if at all, used confusing corrections and caused frustration and overstimulation, and put at least 3 different people at risk over the course of the episode, oh and used a shoelace as a collar to train with.

So I discovered that I love greyhounds
One of my friends took me to a dog event a couple towns over and I was totally down for it because dogs. While there we moseyed, talking with dog owners, fawning over all the good dogs, and I got cards for a few pet babysitters that I might use while Iâm out of state for a week.Â
Then I saw them.
A group of greyhounds chilling at their booth. Since the rest of the dog present were rambunctious, and excited, and whatnot this was a bit of a surprise. So I checked them out.Â
First of all: Greyhounds are much bigger than I thought they were, Sophie, one that this greyhound rescue was walking around, came up to my waist. Second, theyâre so soft. Like puppy soft. Third of all, theyâre oddly graceful looking creatures and so naturally I wanted 20 right then and there.
However I am also somewhat morally opposed to purchasing/owning most purebreds and I have two cats. In a 700sqft apartment. Probably wouldnât work out but the dogs were very chill and I talked with the people from the rescue. They told me these dogs were nearly always this chill, they do well in apartments, and most of them do well with cats.
I grabbed a information packet and after lamenting with my friend about how my poor, dumb heart wants one I decided to do some research on the breed to prove to myself that, like most purebred dogs, they are most likely rife with medical issues.
This has backfired in a most spectacular fashion.
They are prone to bloat, which is something I figured as most large dogs are prone to this. There are preventative measures and because I have nearly always wanted an Irish Wolfhound (also prone to bloat) I have read a lot on the subject and how to recognize it. Okay, normal, I can handle that.
They are prone to bone cancer, specifically in their legs, and many tend to get a leg amputated. (One site said it was almost a 50/50 chance after age 10? Or something like that). That sucks, but every dog that has made it to old age that my family has owned has had cancer, generally cysts that were harmless but with pet insurance and knowing that I should probably save up for that, that can be dealt with sufficiently.
They are NOT prone to hip dysplasia, which is shocking because nearly every large dog is. Apparently itâs nearly unheard of in greyhounds.
Their healthy blood-work looks odd from other dogs, so every site and organization I can find recommends finding a vet that is familiar with greyhounds. Again, not a big deal.
Sometimes they get heart murmurs, but itâs normally a misdiagnosis because they have large hearts.
They have very little fat and need coats in the winter.
Retired racers tend to have bad teeth because of their former diet or soft foods and raw meat.Â
Their nails sometimes arenât too good either.
Retired racers sometimes have diseases spread by ticks, which rescues normally check for but it was heavily recommended to get them rechecked when you adopt one.
And that was the vast bulk of the medical issues I could find consistently. Theyâre shockingly healthy for a pure breed. Only two of those things are things that are truly terrible that might make me reconsider, but these are all things that arenât deal breakers. Then I found other things that cemented how much I want one of these concerned miniature horses.
Retired racers have never seen stairs before. You will have to teach them to use stairs.
Retired racers have no idea what sliding glass doors are, it was recommended multiple times to put a tape âXâ over windows and glass doors until they are aware that there is something there.
They are apparently quite affectionate dogs and love to be around people and animals.
They adopt stuffed animals.Â
Their eyes get real big when you have treats and they extend their heads so slightly when they want what you have and they dainty treat eaters.
There are videos of greyhounds sleeping in cat beds. Itâs insane how much these dogs can curl up.
They donât bark, they communicate primarily through whining and one blog mentioned that when they get excited hers sounds like a woman being murdered.
Every site calls them 40mph couch potatoes. All of them. These dogs want to chill on the couch with you. I am totally okay with this.
Most greyhounds tend to respect fences and wonât attempt to escape a fenced in yard.
They are very routine oriented dogs.
They are intelligent and so are generally pretty easy to train.
Downsides:
They are not to be outdoor dogs at all. Ever. By any stretch of the imagination.  They are not built for being outside in weather (because they originated in the desert). If itâs cold, they will need a coat. Additionally, retired racers will need to get used to walking on pavement because they have never had to before.
In addition, they have shit recall abilities. If they get loose and start running after something, because their instinct to chase is insanely strong, there is a good chance they will not stop. Even if they are well trained, there is a not small chance they will keep going. Since they also lack understanding of things like roads, and cars and what not, many a greyhound have been killed due to this.Â
Because of the previous point: they cannot be let off leashes under any circumstances outside of a fenced in area.
Their necks are thicker than their heads, they can easily pop out of normal collars - most rescues will provide a Martingale collar (also known as a choke collar because they tighten with pressure) but I donât like those so chest harness it is.
Most are great with indoor cats (or other small indoor pets) but because of 4,000 years of breeding chase instinct into them they will chase, catch, and kill outdoor cats. This extends to squirrels, rabbits, and small floofy dogs that look like racing lures when they run. Many sites stress to never let your greyhound off it leash, even at a dog park, because greyhounds are not aware that other dog breeds exist and they will give chase to some smaller breeds.
They get massive amounts of separation anxiety, and they will chew when upset (and apparently get upset tummies as well (and really rank farts)). It was recommended on multiple sites that you take a few days to get your dog used to a non-kennel home and to get your dog used to the idea that you will leave (and that itâs no big deal) to leave the building for 5ish minutes at a time, once an hour, gradually increasing the time as the greyhound becomes used to the idea.
They will destroy your landscaping when they run. Since I am planning on buying a house next year and gardening is a BIG thing for me, this is a major drawback that I will have to figure out a way around. Because messy, hodgepodge garden chic is my jam.
They must be crate trained. Especially the retired racers because they will chew and destroy your house when acclimating to it if you are not home. I would have to do this especially because I have two cats that run like mad men through the apartment and that will set off prey drive in the dog.
They must have a bed/crate in the bedroom because retired racers have never slept alone and they will get upset if they are alone.
They will eat out of the cat box. My parentsâ dog does this so this isnât a surprise but it will make them massively sick.
You must lock your trash can up because they will get into it.Â
Baby gates, this is apparently a thing I will need to keep the animals separate while they get to know each other.
There are literally only two greyhound rescues that I can go to. Both are out of state, and everywhere else that I look are selling puppies (which I am highly suspicious about because we have puppy mills here) or they wonât adopt outside of a certain driving distance.
This is one of those dogs where there is a lot of things I absolutely love about them and some things that, sitting here, sans greyhound, that I think I can work with but wonât know until I actually start the process of acquiring said dog. I am also very sad that I literally only have those two options of where to get a rescued greyhound
#greyhounds#I have fallen hopelessly for these dogs#I want one#but#two cats in an apartment#is not conductive#especially since I already hit the pet limit#and exceeded it#After I get a house#I am getting one though#long post is long

Tips for Moving with Your Dog
Published by Alpha Dog Training

When it's time to move into your new house, whether it's across town or across the country, your moving day checklist includes packing up your four-legged family members. And while moving with pets is a stressful time for you...it's undoubtedly just as stressful for your pets.
Here are some tips to make moving into your new home as stress-free as possible for everyone in your family especially your pets!
First of all, start by looking at the move from your pet's point of view. Their current home is more than their home; it's their territory. Dogs tend to adjust much more easily to moves than cats. That's because new puppy owners are encouraged to socialize their puppy to get him used to new people, new smells and other dogs. So, from the time they're young, dogs are out and about.
For both cats and dogs, sticking to the routine after the move is very important. Maintaining the same schedule for treats, grooming and bedtime will help your pet acclimate even more quickly. And walking your dog at the same time each day will also help him transition into his new home.
Before The Move: Preparing Your Pets
Consider taking your dog to your new neighborhood for walks before you move in. Walk by your new house and let your dog familiarize himself with the scents of the neighborhood. Go inside the new house if possible. Or try to bring something from the new house to your dog so he can familiarize himself with its unique smell.
While you're packing, try not to isolate your dog in a dog crate. Instead, include him while you pack and move boxes, allowing him to investigate the activity. If your dog is crated or isolated in a room by himself while the rest of the family packs and prepares to move, he'll likely feel nervous which could lead to stress-related behaviors such as hyperactivity, jumping or barking.
It's Moving Day: What Should I Do with My Pets?
One option is to assign a responsible family member to be the dedicated dog sitter (choose someone who won't be responsible for packing or moving on moving day). But it might be less stressful for your family and your dog if you have a dog-loving friend watch your dog for the day.
Planning for A Long-Distance Move with Your Pets
If your move is long-distance, your pets will need to be crate-trained well before your move. On the day of your move, your pets should be wearing collars including up-to-date rabies tags and your new address and phone number.
If you're driving, plan stops along the way to ensure you'll find pet friendly hotels. If your trip involves air travel, be sure to ask the airline about their pet travel requirements. You'll need to keep a copy of your pet's veterinarian records in your carry-on luggage.
How Dogs Adjust to a New Home
Your dog will most likely want a VIP tour of his new home. Once the movers have left and you and your dog have the house to yourself, let him make the rounds inside and outside. Walk him on a leash during this initial introduction so he feels safe and secure by your side. The sooner he gets used to the new smells of his new environment, the sooner he'll feel at home.
Because a dog needs space and room to exercise, your dog might take more time to adjust if you're moving from a larger house to a smaller house or apartment. But just like cats, dogs will appreciate getting back to the established routine as soon as possible. Taking walks at your usual time and sticking to the same route for several days will help your dog adjust.
If possible, allow yourself a few extra days to spend at home with your pet after the move and before returning to work. During this period of adjustment, you can begin to stay away from home for short periods of time to get your pets used to being alone in their new space. Do not leave your dog unattended outside during this adjustment period. Dogs have been known to jump fences in an attempt to return to their old, familiar territory.
Veterinarian Advice and Moving with Your Pets
If you've moved a long distance, now is the perfect time to ask your new neighbors to recommend a new veterinarian for your pets. Schedule a "get to know you" visit for your pets as soon as possible so you have a vet in the event of a veterinary emergency.
Just like people, every pet is unique and has a personality all their own. Because you know your pet better than anyone, you can probably predict how smoothly the transition will go. If you know that your pet is extremely skittish, talk to your veterinarian well beforehand about your concerns. He or she can recommend medication to help sedate your pet during this stressful time, if it's absolutely necessary.

HOW TO TRAVEL WITH CATS?

25 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH CATS
1. confirm they need A MICROCHIP We adopted our two orange tabby boys from a shelter so that they have already been chipped. If yours doesnât, confirm you get one implanted. We already had a scare on day one among our trip where one among them ran out of the car into the woods. If somebody else were to possess found him and took him to a vet, they might have our contact info. A collar with a telephone number tag also helps, but our cats have breakaway collars that they often get out of.
2. START WITH SHORT RIDES This will get your cat won't to all the new sensations of riding within the car. Youâll also determine how he/she handles travel and whether motion sickness is going to be a problem. Some cats even get hyperactive (theyâll be everywhere the place), which may make it difficult and dangerous for you.
3. START WITH A CRATE Our cats donât enjoy the tiny spaces (they cry a lot!), but it's an honest thanks to starting. Cats typically feel easier during space they're conversant in. Some people believe that cats should be during a crate during a car for his or her safety. Ours tend to act more like dogs and wish to roam a touch with wind on their faces. For our very first car ride, though, I allow them to sit on my lap.
4. ask YOUR VET Depending on how your cat handles being on the road, your vet could also be ready to help. Though we probably wouldnât sedate our cats (and luckily we didnât need to), some may suggest you sedate them or give them medication for kinetosis. There also are pheromone sprays to assist calm your cat in stressful situations.
5. PLAN PIT STOPS Give your cat an opportunity every 2-3 hours. Itâs also an honest time to allow them to use the litter without the car traveling.
6. PACK EXTRA SUPPLIES You never know where youâll be and you donât want to be stuck somewhere without supplies you would like for your cat. Also, pack extra portions for any special food or medicines your cat will need.
7. FEED YOUR CAT EARLY Give your cat 3-4 hours to let their food settle before hitting the road. Otherwise, you'll get a gift during your drive.
8. KEEP THEM HYDRATED. Make sure you've got water for your cat along the way. We wish to use this collapsible camping cup for his or her water, both within the car and within the trailer since it packs away nicely.
9. REWARD THEM Have treats handy so you'll allow them to know they're doing an honest job. a bit like any behavior, giving them treats helps reinforce positive behavior. you'll not think itâs possible to coach a cat, but ours can sit, shake, and weâre within the process of leash training them.
10. PET-FRIENDLY HOTELS If you or your pets need an opportunity from the road, search for pet-friendly hotels. There are more of them out there than you think! confirm your call and ask if they permit both dogs and cats.
THINGS which will MAKE TRAVELING together with your CATS EASIER 11. PUPPY PADS These are great for any accidents they could have within the car. If itâs been a short time, we sometimes forget certain minute behaviors they exhibit once they need something. Weâve had a couple of times where they got sick and got diarrhea or threw up everywhere the car. Now we always keep some puppy pads handy. Weâll place them under their sitting areas and also stash several of them near the front so we will grab them once they get sick.
12. EXTRA TRASH BAGS You need to stay around extra trash bags for an equivalent reason as above. You never know when theyâll have an accident. We wish to devour the doggie poop bags available at the most rest areas.
13. U-PET We mostly use this to move them to the vet and therefore the vets love this thing! once we move them from the trailer to the car and the other way around, we just carry them in our arms, but otherwise, we transport them with the U-pet. Weâve taken Mika on shorter hikes, but weâre hoping to require him on some longer ones. Weâll allow you to skills it goes!
Tips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.comTips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.com 14. THUNDER SHIRT Mika isnât bothered by car rides or changing environments. the sole thing he hates is being confined during a small space. With Sebastian, not so much! During our trip, we picked up a Thunder Shirt. He felt immobilized initially (it was hilarious and cute) but eventually got won't have a cozy shirt around him. We usually put it on him right before our drives to our next camping spot.
Tips for Traveling Long Distance with Cats // localadventurer.com 15. HARNESS + LEASH For us, the limited space just meant we spent the maximum amount of time as possible outdoors. For the cats, it meant that once they got hyper, theyâd run back and forth 23 ft at a time. Thatâs one of The explanations why we wanted to leash train them so that they might also spend time outdoors too. If youâre trying to leash train your cats, get a harness that matches snug around the neck and chest (you should be ready to fit two of your fingers within the neck portion). a number of them work better than others. With the primary one we bought, one night, Sebastian popped out of it and saw the woods. We were checking out him within the dark for half an hour and thought we lost him! this is often the one we currently use, and it's worked the simplest for us. We still need to monitor them carefully, since cats are slippery and may manage to back out of things. Mika is more easily manageable, but on Sebastian, we use the harness and therefore the thunder shirt over the harness. Heâs not getting out of both.
Tips for Traveling with Cats // localadventurer.com 16. FELINE PINE Since we are in such a small space, we decided to vary from our usual clumping litter to pine. It masks the odor far better and doesnât get everywhere the floors. They still get pine out of their box, but itâs much easier to select up. We usually put their litter box right by the door, so that we will sweep it up right there.
17. PORTABLE LITTER BOX / OUR MAKESHIFT LITTER BOX Instead of buying a litter box, we decided to shop for an enormous plastic container with a lid. This has worked best for us since we are transporting it from the trailer to the car almost every other day. Weâve been traveling a lot! If you are feeling just like the box needs replacing, itâs also really affordable. thus far ours has lasted 2 months, and it doesnât get to get replaced yet. Also, the lid helps trap the odor inside after they are doing their deed on a car ride. We even considered getting this disposable one that lasts fortnight (has anyone tried these yet? does one like it?).
18. FOLDABLE CUP We use these for his or her water (and food for the car). It folds into itself, and you'll pack them away easily. space for storing is restricted, so anything that compresses into something smaller is great! we've got an Airstream tray that we use for his or her food, but if we didnât have that, we might have picked up an outsized collapsible bowl to use for his or her food.
19. FURMINATOR Our cats shed a lot! Especially within the heat. It wasnât as noticeable during a larger space, but in an RV or car, you want to stop the maximum amount of the shedding as possible. We fulminate them once every week to stay the fur around our place minimized. If theyâre home and weâre close to taking them on an extended trip, we confirm we terminate them before we go too.
20. POOP SCOOP This is a requirement for cats during any scenario (unless youâre lucky enough to bathroom train them â we were halfway there once we lived in a house with quite one bathroom). We picked up an inexpensive one and velcroed a Ziploc bag to the side of our litter box where we keep it.
21. DUST PAN + BRUSH We bought two sets, one for the trailer and one for the car. We use it a day to comb up any of the litter that gets of our the box and it helps to wash up the other dust or particles too.
22. WATERLESS CAT BATH FOAM Not sure how you are doing it, but we've never been ready to give our cats a correct bath without being clawed at. Most healthy indoor cats can keep themselves clean and donât require a shower, but our boys wish to get messy! Some people say it'd be their dog-like personalities that also make them care less about their hygiene. once we fulminate them once every week, we also use the waterless bath foam on them too. they appear to love this far better than the spray.
23. LINT ROLLER Unless you donât mind being covered in fur (why is it whenever you wear black they need to be extra affectionate?), you ought to probably get a lint roller. If youâre a pet owner, Iâm guessing you have already got one. :)
24. FLEA MEDS If you are doing allow your cats out, make certain they need their flea meds! For now, we allow them to enjoy the outside from our trailer window, but we are still hoping to completely leash train them both!
25. DRAMAMINE OR PRESCRIPTION kinetosis MEDICATION Mika doesnât mind rides within the car, but once we started driving on mountainous and curvy roads, it gave him motion sickness. We tried Dramamine and got another prescription drug to undertake from a vet, but neither worked. We attempt to let him sit on the middle console so he can anticipate, but he always insists on searching the edges and at the bottom. Such a stubborn cat (Jacob likes to joke that he gets that from me)! Hopefully, weâll be out of the mountains soon for his sake! thus far, we havenât found out the simplest solution for this.

Dogs and Fireworks. Why are dogs afraid of fireworks? Keeping Your Dog Calm and Safe When The Fireworks Starts.

Help your dog to survive the fireworks with ease. Tips that work I use it each year with my dogs and cats.Â
It is that time of the year again, where we celebrate the New Year soon. It is just 10 days away. In some country's fireworks are still allowed and for our pets, a horror day with lots of stress starts.

Dogs and Cats are scared of fireworks, and some dogs are severely affected.Â
Why are dogs afraid of fireworks?
For us, humans, Fireworks are a fun and exciting way to celebrate holidays like Independence Day and the Celebration of the New year. For dogs, and cats though, those loud booms and flashing lights aren't so much fun. During the Independence Day and the New Years day, so many pets run away and get lost because of the fireworks. It is critical that during this time, you keep your pet inside the home. It is also a good idea to have your pet microchip in case it is not a law in your country, or keep an identity tag on your dog's collar.Â
4 Reasons Dogs are Scared of Fireworks.
1. Yes, the fireworks are loud and noisy with lots of flashes and lights. Fireworks even the Crackers make noise. The Rockets make big booms and beautiful lights to us humans. For dogs, it is just a loud boom, crackles and whistles with flashing lights, and that is scary for them. Dogs have a more acute hearing sense than us, and those loud sounds are alarming for dogs. Loud booms, crackles and whistles are alarming.
2. Fireworks go on for hours and are unpredictable.
You expect fireworks on holidays like the Fourth of July, and on New Year. You are looking forward to it, but your dog feels it is just another day with lots of noise. The loud noises and flashing lights come at different intervals, so dogs can't get used to them. 3. The Fireworks pose a threat in your dog's mind, and that means to hide. For dogs, the noise and flashing lights of fireworks are unpredictable, and dogs absorb them as a threat. It triggers their fight or flight response. Some dogs show signs of anxiety, run away or hide. Some dogs get really bad and show restlessness, panting, pacing and whining.Â

How can you help your dog to overcome the fireworks with ease?Â
The first thing you have to do is keep your pet inside on the day of the fireworks. That includes your yard, garden or any outdoor area even if it is enclosed. Make sure your kids do not leave the front door open by accident, and your dog or pet might escape. Take your dog for a walk a few hours before the fireworks go off. I usually take my dogs around 8 pm for a walk, although there are already some people kids and adult who start firing a few firecrackers and rockets. I do not let my dogs off the leash, I keep them on the leash the whole time.Â
2. Creating a safe place inside your home for your dog or pet.Â
Your dog needs a place where he can hide and at the same time, feels safe. I usually use a table in one of our rooms and cover it with blankets, especially if you have more than one dog. I covered the table with blankets and put under the table some chewy toys with little treats inside, including some soft covers to sleep on it. If you have a Crate, you can put the covers over the crate, but you must not close or lock the crate. If you lock the crate, it might be even more stressful for your dog in the crate as he has no way to escape. Please don't lock your dog in the crate, as this can be even more stressful for him. A dog needs an option where he can hide. What might be ok for you might not be ok for your dog? Give your dog options so they can choose where to hide
3. Avoid that your dog is stressed out
Some dogs get so stressed that they try to escape from one place to the other. You mustn't confine your dog to one room only. Especially if you have an easily scared dog. My dogs do stay with us during the time of the fireworks. Most of the time, they are curled up under the table. We keep the TV on to overdo the noise. But our dogs are smart, and they can hear them anyway.  Dogs may also be most comfortable curled up in their usual spot with you rather than a designated 'safe place', so allow them access to all safe areas of the house.
4. Cover any glass doors and windows.Â
Draw the curtains or cover the windows to minimize the lights from the fireworks. If you have shutters let them down or close them.Â

Lots of people believe that it is the sound that makes a dog scared, but it is not always the sound alone. Even the flashing lights across the sky can make a dog scared. Leave your lights on at night when everyone is indoors to reduce the impact of the flashing lights. Dogs, when they're frightened about something, they will seek somewhere to go that they feel safe and secure. So we want to make sure that the hiding places are provided for them, which they know is at a place that they're going to be safe and secure in. We need to get them used to it earlier on before fireworks start.
5.Provide dogs with a long-lasting chew to help keep them distracted and busy
When you go out on New Year's Eve and leave your dog alone at home than please make sure you have all the lights in the home on and all the curtains are closed. Put on the TV or some soothing music so your dog is not feeling totally alone. ( Make sure the music last until you are back or put the music on repeat) Nothing is more terrifying for a dog being alone on the day where there are fireworks and he is alone at home. Provide your dog with different options of toys to keep him occupied. There are different options on toys you can use for your dog to calm down. The best are the ones where they are busy figuring out where the treat comes out and how to get it out. That keeps your dog occupied and distracted. You can also use a chewy bone if that is a better way for your dog. Toys are available in any pet store, and the best for a situation with fireworks are interactive toys. Please read my blog the best 4 interactive toys for your dog.Â
6.The use of Pheromones to calm down a pet.Â
I am not a friend of those things, but I will use them before the fireworks. Around 2 weeks before. Why, because I tried a lot and I find the best are those Pheromones to calm down my dogs and cats. I love my pets and want to make them as comfortable as possible. They are available as Adaptil Spray, Adaptil Collar and Adaptil Diffuser.Â

I usually spray the bed with Adaptil, make sure you're leaving 15 minutes between spraying the bedding and having your dog go there. There is another brand that is called Sentry and that is used for cats and smaller dogs. You can also use the Adaptil diffuser and plug it close to the safe place for your dog. Note you should do that a couple of weeks before the event, if not possible then use the Adaptil Collar. It also works wonders. We know that using Adaptil helps dogs cope with worrying or challenging situations, which fireworks nights can be. So plugging in an Adaptil diffuser a couple of weeks beforehand very close to the den helps them have that pheromone support. ( 7days before is still ok) An Adaptil adapter is just a synthetic copy of the natural pheromone. A mother dog will release two to three days after giving birth to her puppies, and the idea is that these puppies then are comforted and supported by her presence. And Adaptil has precisely the same effect on our adult dogs as well as puppies that you may have in your home. Adaptil Diffuser, Spray and collar is available here at the store. Order now.
Don't forget your cats!
We've talked a lot about how to help your dogs on fireworks night but as mentioned earlier, don't forget cats. Once they come in for the evening, shut that cat flap. Make sure your cats got all the things they need inside: a little tray, some food, some water and most importantly they'll have this favourite spot that they like to hide or sleep in.

And it's best just often to leave them there because they cope so much better on their own. If you have more than one cat, you may find that this change in routine can be quite stressful for them and in this situation, Feliway can really help them cope with the change in routine and having to share the space inside with each other. You can also use the brand sentry. Feliway or Sentry is also available in a diffuser, collar and spray. Click here  My cats are typically curled up between my dogs during the fireworks. Especially Leo, our cat who is even afraid of thunder. All in all, we also provide Feliway of Sentry for our cats that calm them a bit down, and they are more relaxed than our dogs. It sometimes looks our cats protecting the dogs and assure them all is fine. Thanks for reading my blog "Dogs and Fireworks. Why are dogs afraid of fireworks? Keeping Your Dog Calm and Safe When The Fireworks Starts. I hope this has really helped you to understand how we can help our dogs and cats during the firework season and I want to wish you a happy and safe firework season. If you have a dog or cat that is really fighting with anxiety, and you have tried all please ask your veterinarian for advice and solution. If you're going to need further information, and want a natural solution you could use essential oils. Take caution when using essential oils as some oils are toxic for pets. I am a natural person and love to use natural remedies. I tried essential oil for my dogs but the effect is better with Adaptil and Sentry. Please share my blog with someone who has pets and with your friends. Have a beautiful New Year and may 2020 fulfil all your wishes.

Dog Training Collars: Should You Use Them?
Dog coaching can be fun or it can be a struggle. How you and your pet dog preceive training greatly depends on how you method training. This short article shares with you three prevalent blunders dog homeowners make when education their puppies and how you can keep away from them.
We have surgeries that change gentlemen into women and vice versa, once more a make a difference of freedom. But is it likely way too significantly to switch a man into a lizard? In some cult groups males and ladies dress up in costumes and go out seeking like Wolves, dogs and Cats, Okay it is only a costume. But possessing surgical treatment to completely alter themselves to glance like a tiger is this truly Okay? We who appreciate animals and kind a excellent attachment to them fully grasp the bonding, but not the transformation.
The plane hardly missed a extremely-trafficked road. It also barely misses numerous large oil tanks that dot the landscape in the vicinity of O'Hare. Finally, it just scarcely skipped a big trailer park also condition correct throughout from the runway. It slammed into a industry and exploded into a enormous fireball. All 271 individuals on board the aircraft have been killed. Two folks on the ground were being also killed. It is still the premier misplaced off life for an accidental airplane crash in the background of the United States.
It is superior for you to be the one particular teaching your pet - Many persons get puppies and then just enroll them in instruction courses or better a qualified trainer. This is not fantastic for 3 causes. The initial is you will not build the bond with your pet dog and he or she will not see you as the chief, and the 2nd is he will not be educated to know how "you" want factors to be accomplished in your family. And thirdly, it's more cost-effective. Lessons and trainers are receiving far more costly by the minute due to the fact they demand an arm and a leg even for just brain training for dogs advice occasionally.
As a specialist in puppy instruction and conduct, I have satisfied with numerous dogs that have developed behavioral problems as a consequence of 1 key explanation: they are bored. When we don't give our canines a path for their strength, it is up to them to come across techniques to release it, and this is never a appealing consequence. When canine have to come across strategies to fulfill their energetic desires on their very own, it typically final results in behaviors like: damaging chewing, pulling and lunging on leash, extreme territorial barking, nervousness & leaping up, to name a few.
31. DO NOT devote hours and hours and several hours making an attempt to best your web site. As a substitute, invest most of these hours looking through about and training Online Marketing and writing more material pages.
How would you educate your pet that? Break it into smaller steps. Train him the lifeless trick (laying about on his aspect with out transferring) first. Then, instruct him to stand on his hind legs. As soon as he has that down, educate him to wander backward. You could even add in a bit of a twirl. Then, he drops to the lifeless pet dog and, viola, you have a trick to amaze good friends and family with. Additionally, you have a very well experienced Puppy trainng.
It may possibly be worthy of your time and a number of bucks, to seek advice from with an knowledgeable pet dog trainer or behaviorist. Get their views on what breed they believe that would be finest suited for your loved ones. They have the expertise of doing work with a range of breeds, and are common with temperaments, understanding levels, furthermore, how well they unconsciously get alongside with little ones and other pets.
Welcome your new pet into your loved ones by next this listing. When you convey a new pet property you need to recognize that your new "addition" is frightened at initially. Do not pressure your pet to get modified but test to make him or her as cozy as achievable.
Dog instruction can be pleasurable or it can be a battle. How you and your dog preceive teaching tremendously relies upon on how you technique instruction. This post shares with you 3 frequent problems dog proprietors make when education their dogs and how you can prevent them.
As a lot as you attempt to be well prepared and careful, it is often possible for a combat to take place and you really should be well prepared to deal with that. As a coach, I will not get my dogs to the pet park until I have adequate handle about them to get in touch with them back again to me really should I see a hazardous circumstance occurring. If your dog is concerned in a combat, under no circumstances test to crack it up with your hands. As a substitute use a loud angry voice to startle the pet dogs or take a hose, chair, or even jacket to fling about their heads. When the fight is more than, check your pet for injuries correct away. If their are none, calmly leave the park and get your pet for a wander to permit them decompress. As a matter of security, I usually have citronella or pepper spray with me as it's an effective software to break up a pet combat with out triggering any real damage.
Plan your journey with relaxation stops at enough intervals to cater to your dogs desires. Find out the veterinary hospitals alongside the route. Have all the necessary paraphernalia this sort of as a leash, puppy foods and medications if any.
Dogs want a area exactly where they truly feel safe and a area to get in touch with their personal. And the actuality is that if you do not offer a "den" for your pet, he will make a den for himself - and you may not like his alternative of locations. He may possibly determine to present himself with a den by digging a wonderful deep hole in your garden. You will be better off, and the puppy will be greater off, if you just present him with a den of his possess. His "den" really should be a crate. A pet dog's organic desire for a den is what would make crate instruction the most simple of all how to train your dog in barnet endeavors.
As a expert in pet dog coaching and behavior, I have satisfied with a lot of pet dogs that have designed behavioral difficulties as a result of just one primary reason: they are bored. When we don't give our pet dogs a route for their energy, it is up to them to find methods to launch it, and this is under no circumstances a appealing final result. When canine have to discover methods to satisfy their energetic requirements on their very own, it typically outcomes in behaviors like: destructive chewing, pulling and lunging on leash, too much territorial barking, nervousness & leaping up, to identify a handful of.
Parents need to consider their kids's level of maturity in addition to the commitment of time necessary for a dog to create into a very well-altered, nicely-mannered grownup pet. Children must be knowledgeable that puppies come to feel soreness, and respond ideal to fair, agency, loving and constant leadership.
Another feeling that is wonderful to use when producing your freestyle rap lyrics is the feeling of scent. I bear in mind when I was little going for walks home from college and smelling the unique smells of supper being cooked as I walked by the unique house. Publish about the scent of bread baking in the oven. Create about the smells of currently being in the nation. Write about the smells of the flowers and the smells of the different Puppy trainng animals in the pastures.
It could be really worth your time and a few bucks, to check with with an knowledgeable pet coach or behaviorist. Get their views on what breed they feel would be greatest suited for your family. They have the expertise of functioning with a variety of breeds, and are common with temperaments, learning degrees, furthermore, how well they unconsciously get along with young children and other animals.
Always recall you will not train an old pet dog new tricks quickly, but with time regularity and endurance you will. Don't forget your dog would like to be appreciated by you.

Tips for Moving with Your Dog

Keeping Your Dog Healthy â A Beginners Guide
In this beginnerâs guide for keeping your dog healthy, read about dog ownership for newbies, how to prepare your home to be dog ready and dog safe and get top tips for keeping your furry companion physically and mentally healthy.
Jump To: How do I prepare my home? What tips do I need to keep my dog healthy?
Owning a dog is a wonderful and rewarding experience. Few things can beat the feeling of arriving home to an excited tail-wagging furry companion, and owning a dog is beneficial to people of any age and background. And while a dog will definitely inundate you with joy and love, owning one does come with numerous responsibilities and even a couple of challenges to boot.
For new pet parents like yourself who might still be in the honeymoon phase of dog ownership, you will quickly realise that thereâs quite a bit more that goes into keeping your furry companion in good health than you might have figured. Thatâs because your new four-legged companion will need to be provided with nutrition, care, love and entertainment for the rest of its life.
Although thereâs quite a bit of work to be done to keep your mutt healthy and happy, youâll be glad to discover that the potential drawbacks will be dwarfed by the benefits once you get into it.
First Things First â Preparing Your Home
If youâre planning on getting a dog or have just adopted one, getting your home ready for your new housemate is the first thing you need to do if you havenât already. You will need to dog-proof your home to ensure your dog does not suffer any harm or cause any damage. You should:
Cover and secure electrical cables around the home.
Keep your socks, shoes and anything else that dogs can chew on in closets and cupboards.
Gather and store any potentially harmful chemicals in cupboards where your pet cannot access them.
Secure your trash by keeping it in lidded cans to keep your pet from scavenging through it.
Purchase the necessary dog supplies including food, food and drink bowls, collar, leash, doggy bed, dog crate, safe toys, identification tags and disposable doggy waste bags.
Additionally, if your dog will be living with you and your family, you will need to establish some responsibilities as well as a couple of house rules like which rooms the dog cannot go into, whether they can climb on furniture, and whoâs responsible for walking the dog. Brief your family to ensure everybody is on the same page regarding their roles and the rules.
Top Tips For Keeping Your Dog Healthy
Now that your home is ready and everyone concerned knows and understand their role with the dog, we can get to the nitty-gritty of keeping your pooch healthy and happy. Here are a few crucial tips to help you keep your dog healthy as you begin your dog ownership journey.
Monitor your dogâs health from the start. Like humans, dogs also need doctors â or veterinarians in this case. Do some research online or ask for recommendations from friends to find a good vet in your area to help out with your dogâs medical issues. Ideally, you should research and find a good vet even before your new pet arrives home; if you havenât yet, you need to do it immediately. One of the first things you need to do for your new furry companion is taking them to the vet for their initial visit. This is especially important for puppies who might not have had any veterinary care before.
Your vet will check your dog for any disease symptoms â including checking for parasites such as worms â and administer any vaccines required to keep your dog from catching common canine diseases. If you wish, you could also have your dog implanted with an identification chip and desexed for breeding control while at the vetâs office.
Provide your dog with proper nutrition. Dogs, just like people, need to be kept on a nutritious diet to maintain good health. While dogs can feed on just about anything â including human food â itâs recommended that you invest in high-quality commercial dog food as itâs developed to suit their systems and provide all the nutrition they require to stay healthy.Consult your veterinarian on the type of food you should feed your dog as well as the number of meals you should provide them with. Usually, a mature dog will require to be fed twice per day. The number of meals required will increase up to six for puppies that have smaller digestive systems and require more energy for growth.
Get your dog into a feeding routine as this will also help you with house training for your furry friend â dogs usually need to go to the bathroom about half an hour after they eat. Avoid human food as much as possible as this can cause health or weight problems with your pet.
But food is not the only thing dogs need to survive. Make sure your mutt is properly hydrated by giving it adequate water. Ensure your dog has got access to water at all times so that they can drink when they feel thirsty.
Keep the pests away. Because of its fur, your dog is a magnet for pests; the most common ones being ticks and fleas. These pests, if not prevented, will affect both your pet and your family â so itâs best to keep them at bay.You can keep your dog free of pests by cleaning its coat regularly, preferably with a shampoo that repels pests such as anti-flea shampoo. Most dogs will only require to be bathed at least once every month, but this will depend on your dogâs breed and activities. Inspect your dogâs coat for pests, especially ticks, which you should remove carefully so as not to cause your pet any harm.
Additionally, you should keep your dogâs fur trimmed if itâs a hairy breed. All dogs should have their fur brushed regularly to keep it untangled and debris free. Also, make sure to trim your dogâs nails as these could irritate its paws if left unattended. Be careful not to cut the nailâs inner part (called the quick) as it is alive and could irritate your pooch.
Help your dog keep fit through exercise. Your furry friend, just like yourself, needs to keep fit through exercise for optimum health. The amount of exercise required by your dog will depend on its breed, with some requiring more exercise to burn energy than others.Your dog requires to have at least one long walk each day or two small ones. This is especially important if your home does not have an enclosed yard where you can release the dog and let it run around freely. Games such as fetch can also be used while you are walking your dog to make the exercise routine a bit more intense for your dog.
Socialise and play with your dog. Dogs are pretty smart creatures which makes maintaining their mental health all the more important. Provide your dog with mental stimulation by playing with it and socialising it with other humans as well as other dogs. Introduce your companion to many different people, dogs, sounds, sights and smells to ensure theyâre mentally well adjusted.Let your dog be a dog by allowing it to play and express behaviours normally associated with that particular type of breed. If your scent hound loves following scents, let it sniff away once in a while! You could even make a game out of it.
You can also keep your dog stimulated and entertained by providing training. Use a reward-based training for about 10-20 minutes twice a day depending on your dogâs concentration span. This not only prevents boredom but also helps you bond with your pet friend.
Finally, remember to always treat your new pet companion with love and respect and exercise patience especially in the initial days of your relationship. Sometimes it takes a while for dogs to adjust to a new environment. Otherwise, enjoy your new pet!

Why You Should Not Let Your Ragdoll Cat Outside
Ragdoll cats are known for their intelligence and desire to follow their humanâs every move, but this is usually contained within their home. Sometimes, however, Â cat owners think theyâre doing their pet a favor by letting them outside. As a former animal shelter employee and volunteer, Iâve seen some of these outings go horribly wrong!
Should you let your Ragdoll cat outside? While it might be tempting to let your feline friend explore the outdoors with you, Ragdolls should never be left to free roam. The mental stimulation is great for your cat, but his safety is more important! Consider other ways for your cat to get some fresh air, such as setting up an enclosed area or training him to walk on a leash.
The outdoors may be calling to you and your cat, but letting him loose comes with some risks. Donât worry, though, because there are ways that you can let your cat enjoy lifeâs simple pleasures without risking life and limb.
Why Should You Bring Your Ragdoll Cat Outside?
Most experts and enthusiasts would argue strongly against letting your Ragdoll roam, but some cats are insistent. Â While the risks outweigh the rewards, there certainly are some benefits to letting your cat spend time outside.
Slowly introducing your cat to environments other than your home may help them adapt to future changes. This could make their next vet visit or a move less stressful for everyone.
In the event that you face an emergency evacuation, having your cat accustomed to leaving their home can truly be a lifesaver.
Cats have a well-earned reputation for being couch potatoes, so itâs easy to forget that they have inherited curiosity and prey drive from their wild ancestors. Allowing them some time outdoors helps them express their inner lion.
While it is not generally advised to let your cat outside, it is up to you to consider all information available and act in the catâs best interest.
What Could Happen If I Let My Ragdoll Cat Outside?
A quick trip outside could result in problems ranging from tangled fur to a permanently missing cat. It is important to weigh these risks against the benefits of outdoor exploration.
All too often, cat owners wanting to treat their Ragdoll to an adventure get more than what they bargained for. Â Your Ragdoll might be completely calm and confident inside, but something as small as a lawnmower could cause him to take off.
Once heâs in âflight modeâ, it may be next to impossible to get him back.
Vehicular traffic poses a major danger to house cats. Sadly, most of us have had the misfortune of seeing someoneâs pet on the side of the road at some point. Cats arenât wired to understand traffic safety and should be kept away when possible.
Disturbingly enough, unaccompanied cats may fall victim to wrongdoers. Even more so than most cat breeds, Ragdolls are overly trusting of people that could pose a threat to them.
Sadly, humane organizations worldwide have seen harm done by strangers, from cats being lit on fire to being shot with BB guns.
Well-intentioned neighbors may assume that an unfamiliar cat is an unloved stray, and rehome your beloved pet via an animal shelter or personal networking without your knowledge.
Approximately 3.2 million cats enter shelters and pounds in the United States each year. Only about 90,000 of those animals are ever returned to their original families. (source)
With âpet flippingâ â the act of stealing a pet and ârehomingâ it for a profit â on the rise, designer cats face an elevated risk of being stolen. While itâs unlikely that catnapping your average cat would be profitable for thieves, Ragdolls typically cost upwards of $400!
Your Ragdoll could also face danger while interacting with other animals. Dogs may give chase, injuring them or causing them to run into hazardous areas. Other cats may be territorial and engage in aggressive behavior with your Ragdoll as well.
While less likely, it is not unheard for kittens and smaller cats to be picked up by large predatory birds like owls and falcons, even in urban areas!
If left outside, your cat could also face a variety of ailments and infestations. At the very least, he could bring back fleas, ticks, and parasites that could spread throughout your home.
More importantly, he could contract potentially fatal diseases like rabies, feline leukemia, or distemper.
Ready to Take Your Ragdoll Cat Exploring? Take these Preparation Steps First!
Bringing your cat outdoors is dangerous, but there are some ways to minimize the risk.
Vaccines & Physicals â  Make sure your cat is current on preventative vaccines, and ask your vet if your cat is healthy enough for potential added stress and physical activity. Ragdolls are prone to both heart and joint issues, so this is very important. Spay or Neuter â  If you have a female ragdoll, make sure she is not in heat. This can make her more likely to try and escape and potentially attract other cats. Unaltered males are also more likely to wander, looking for mates. Identification â Tags and collars are a good way to distinguish your cat from a stray, but can easily fall off. Microchips are inexpensive and a much more reliable way to identify your cat to police, animal control, and shelter workers if needed.
The above tips are just a startâ Always follow the advice of your veterinarian and use your best judgment!
What if Your Ragdoll Wants to be Outside, but You Canât Trust Him?
If you canât find a safe way for your Ragdoll to enjoy the outdoors, consider the following options.
Catios â If you have a porch, chances are that you can make a DIY catio! Just add some heavy duty screens to enclose an existing outdoor area.
Crates and Cages â  A large dog crate or small animal cage can serve as a safe place for your cat to hang out, but remember that if your Ragdoll can fit his head through, the may be able to escape- Choose your crate accordingly.
Pet Carriers â From the classic plastic carrier to backpacks with windows for your cat to peep through, you can find something your Ragdoll will enjoy.
Leash and Harness â It might sound crazy, but this trend is really taking off. You can see famous cats like @burmaadventurecat on Instagram exploring the world thanks to a secure leash and harness combination.
Regardless of the option you choose, always keep your catâs feelings in mind. Make sure that you introduce all changes slowly, and never leave your cat alone and vulnerable in an enclosure!
Related Questions
Do Ragdoll cats get lonely? Just like almost all cats, Ragdolls can get lonely. You can prevent this by getting them a companion cat or dog, or leaving on TVs, radio, etc. There are also pet sitters that can stop by and visit for reasonable fees.
Should Ragdoll cats be kept inside? Ragdoll cats should always be kept indoors. If you take them outside, it should be directly supervised.
How long do Ragdoll cats live for? Sadly, Ragdolls have some of the shortest lifespans for domesticated cats. The average lifespan of a Ragdoll is 9 to 15 years.

Thousands of Greyhounds Need Homes. Hereâs Why You Should Adopt One
Kelly Faircloth adopted her first greyhound, Shadow, in 2001. The sleek black dog sporting a large scar on its side sidled up to her, and she fell in love.
âHe kind of stuck his butt up in my lap,â she says, describing her visit to a rescue center where she met Shadow for the first time. âAnd I said, âWell I guess this is the oneâ.â
Faircloth, president of Greyhound Rescue & Adoptions of Tampa Bay for the past 14 years, has lost count of how many she has fostered since â but the number is definitely more than 75, she says.
Over the next three years, between 7,000 and 14,000 greyhounds (according to some estimates) like Shadow will need foster or forever homes after Florida voted in November to end greyhound racing. The figure is staggering, but greyhounds are low-maintenance and cheap to adopt, experts say, making them the perfect dog for anyone looking for a new best friend.
The thousands of dogs that will come off of the active greyhound tracks in Florida â three of the stateâs 11 tracks stopped offering live racing shortly after the vote â will likely find homes across the country. And there are still six tracks throughout the South and Midwest, not including Florida, so you can still do your part to give a retired racing greyhound a new home if you live outside the state.
Why You Should Adopt a Greyhound
Full disclosure: My wife and I have owned a greyhound for a little more than a year, and she has completely changed my life. Thereâs a certain specialness about these animals that Greyhound Advancement Center co-founder Ken Wuelfing says creates a cultlike atmosphere around groups of greyhound owners.
Theyâre not common at most dog parks around the country, so hereâs a quick description of your average greyhound: Theyâre skinny creatures with heads smaller than their necks, and they weigh from 57 to 90 pounds depending on the sex. (Our female, Tiki, weighs in at 68 pounds).
âThe thing about greyhounds is they act so grateful,â says Faircloth. That is truly the best way to describe the pure joy they seem to exude at merely lying next to you on the couch â itâs a far cry from life in a kennel and on the track.
But weâre Penny Hoarders, so there are more than intangible, lovable properties that make greyhounds great pets.
They Are Perfect for You if You Work From Home
Greyhounds donât bark. Seriously.
They may whine a bit when you get home from some time out of the house or might even have been taught to âspeakâ in their foster home or during training (Tiki knows Spanish, so if I say âhablaâ she happily barks). But, for the most part, theyâll quietly examine the world around them (with long ears erect, of course.)
âTheyâre almost invisible until you want attention or they want attention,â says Wuelfing, who worked from home beside his greyhound for the last 10 years with clients such as insurance giant Liberty Mutual. âHaving an unprofessional phone experience was not really something that was an option.â
Also, they make great apartment dogs since they donât move around a lot or make much noise.
Greyhounds Are Cheap and Relatively Low Maintenance
Adopting a greyhound costs anywhere between $200 and $300 with shots and an initial veterinarian appointment included. A greyhound puppy will cost you well over $2,500, and most dogs of any breed bought from a breeder or pet store can cost between $750 and $2,000, according to this study from Bankrate.
Greyhounds seldom shed and shouldnât require regular grooming appointments, which can run more than $40 at a pet store. And, since time is money, you wonât spend huge chunks of your day walking your greyhound. They love to run⊠for a bit⊠but theyâre mostly couch potatoes.
Greyhounds Make Excellent Starter Dogs â and Great Training Programs Are Available
All the above reasons make greyhounds excellent starter dogs.
âTheyâre very easy to handle,â says Wuelfing, who, with his wife Joanne, has put nearly 500 greyhounds through the Greyhound Advancement Center, a training program that partners with a local prison. âThey donât tend to be afraid of people.â
And through the Wuelfingâs center, you can get a fully trained dog for an additional $150 to $200. The program, which lasts up to 10 weeks, matches a greyhound with an inmate at Floridaâs Hardee Correctional Institution, during which time they learn to sit, stay, come, shake and perform other commands. (As I mentioned, Tiki is bilingual.)
There are several training programs across the country, including Second Chance Greyhounds in Georgia, Greyhound Inmate Experience in Michigan and Greyhound Friends of New Jersey.
âIt helps their personality blossom and better connect with people,â Joanne Wuelfing says.
We put Tiki through the program (she graduated at the top her class in August of 2017!), and it proved to be invaluable. She has never once pulled away while on a leash.
Some Pros and Cons to Know About Before You Adopt a Greyhound
At this point, you may be convinced that you should bring home one of these deerlike dogs. But, as with all breeds â and especially since they have a unique upbringing on the track â greyhounds have quirks that might be pros or cons depending on your lifestyle.
1. They tend to be nervous nellies
Greyhounds may have rarely interacted with humans or dogs other than their fellow breed while on the track. So when theyâre thrust into the larger world, they can be more shy and anxious than other breeds.
But, like other types of dogs, they also have their own personalities, and you should meet and bond with one you plan to adopt before doing so.
2. Those weird heads? Yeah, they need a special collar
You canât just throw any old collar on greyhounds. Because of their head-to-neck-ratio, youâll need to order a martingale collar, which is thicker and tightens around their neck without choking them.
Further, their skinny bodies and long legs make it difficult to walk up and down stairs (along with the fact that they probably donât initially even know what stairs are) or eat and drink from regular dog bowls. So you will need to buy special platforms for their food and water, and you might want to consider the layout of your home.
3. They do come with some health considerations
Greyhounds tend to eat a lot of wet food on the track, which means they usually have plaque problems once they retire. The organization from which you adopt should include a thorough teeth cleaning with its adoption fees.
You will want to brush your greyhoundâs teeth daily. And you can buy oral-care drops to add to your greyhoundâs water bowl.
Also, make sure the vet you pick is familiar with the breed. Greyhounds need a specific type of anesthesia that differs from whatâs used on other dogs.
âThe teeth are the big thing,â Joanne Wuelfing says. âThey really donât have many other problems.â
4. They may not get along with your cat
While Faircloth has fostered plenty of greyhounds alongside cats, some greyhounds are just not compatible with kitties. That can be due to an association with the fake rabbit they chase while on the track.
I once pulled a muscle trying to catch Tiki when she slipped out of her collar and chased a cat through our neighborhood park. (She Was off leash at the time â our mistake.)
5. You might have to crate them for the first few days
As I mentioned before, greyhounds likely have no idea what a house or apartment is â let alone something like a washing machine. Theyâre used to living in a crate.
The organization from which you adopt will likely provide you with a temporary crate to keep your greyhounds in while they adjust to the sights and sounds of their new home. (Tiki only needed to stay in her crate for the first day when we went out for food.)
6. Donât expect a Labrador-like personality; theyâre more like big cats
When planning to adopt, donât expect your greyhound to be a dog that will shower you with affection like a lab or other overtly enthusiastic breed. They are very happy dogs, but for the most part, they will just stand next to you and lean on your legs when they want to show you they love you.
Theyâre sort of like big cats in that way.
7. They love to run â for a few minutes
Also like cats, greyhounds are happy to lie around the house all day. If you have a big backyard or take them to a large dog park, you can get them to sprint a few times.
Itâs fun to watch.
8. If you donât have a fenced yard, youâll need to keep them on a leash
Remember my story about Tiki spotting a cat?
On the track, she easily topped 40 miles per hour while running one of the dozen races she won in her 200-plus race career. So you can imagine what would happen if she managed to run free.
Thatâs why Faircloth recommends that Greyhound owners have a fenced yard or keep their dogs on a leash at all times. âThey are fast,â she says. âAnd if they spot a bird, they are going to take off, and no human is going to catch them.â
9. They are totally going to be the stars at the dog park, but donât expect them to make too many doggie friends
As I mentioned earlier, greyhounds donât really know how to be dogs since they have had a unique upbringing on the race track. So most of them will be awkward at making friends when you take them to the dog park.
But, they will be a total hit with the humans there.
10. But, they are fiercely (OK⊠passively) loyal to the dogs with which they live
Greyhounds might not understand anything about your current dog, its breed or behavior, but they will form a tight bond. So tight that when we separated our greyhound and whippet during a trip out of town, Tiki pooped inside, ate a few sets of blinds and developed an ulcer from the separation anxiety.
As long as we keep them together, the greyhound does very well when we go on long trips. But itâs truly heartwarming to see the love Tiki has for her sister, Josie.
It emphasizes an opinion we tell everyone: Greyhounds are the most lovable dog breed in the world. Despite all their quirks and weirdness.
