hi i've been reading Bad Seeds and i think it's a great comic and i love your art style and choices! looking forward to when you pick it up again, keep up the great artwork and hope you're having a good week :)
also, can i ask what you think gave you the best help in practicing art to get to where you are? like drawing with references or copying and repeating certain anatomy structures or just sketching if something pops in your head, etc.
also if you don't read comments on the comic blog i wanted to say here that i think the detail you put into flesh and gory stuff is really nicely done and visually pleasing + believable.
anyway have a good day ^^
Aaaa! Thank you so much for reading it and for noticing the details ;O; I love reading tags and comments on Bad Seeds, they sustain me so thank you for a most delicious and hearty meal
For practicing art! I’ve chronically sketched and doodled since I was kid (in the margins of school notes, in cheapo sketchbooks, etc), went through a visual art program in my high school, and then did a couple of figure drawing classes in university, so I’ve done a mix of everything. Honestly, the past couple of years are the longest I’ve gone without consistently drawing (grad school kicking my ass) so I dunno if my advice will be too helpful, but I’ll ramble a little under the read more:
Studying anatomy and generally referencing photos/real life helped me improve my art the most, personally. IRL references helps more than photos because it’s easier to get a sense of form, depth, and lighting. In school, we did a lot of drawing exercises like contours, blind contours, and quick gesture drawings in our introductory classes and I remember being frustrated when I did them because they always looked awful to me, but it was kinda the point of the exercise. It helps trains hand-eye coordination and build confidence in line strokes because they’re all timed. Gestures are typically very quick, like 1 min, 30 seconds, 10 seconds; contours were usually a lil longer, like 4 mins, 6 mins, etc.
Here's some contours from when I was uhh 16 I think:

Exercises, studies, doing art projects that challenged me in different ways, experimenting with different mediums and styles, looking at other artists contemporary and old alike, they all helped. All of it can absolutely be self-taught as well, there are tons of art challenges/prompt lists out there and resources. One of the biggest benefits to formal classes was feedback from teachers and peers, but a good community or friend group can also serve that purpose.
I continued to do studies after high school, these ones are around when I was 20 or 21:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More than that though, I didn’t JUST study and train, that would have turned me off art real quick. I drew for fun and knew what I liked. For subjects, that was people, figures, and characters. For mediums, it was ink and pen and digital art. Overall, art for me was about storytelling and comics. There are dozens of sketched comic thumbnails that have never seen the light of day in my sketchbooks, as well as RPG maker game maps, concepts, and character designs.
I remember this was me doing a comic of my high school friends and I in a zombie apocalypse at 15 lol:
Tumblr media
General sketching comics and character ideas and fandoms from ages 15-18 (I didn't do a lot of fanart but OFF was a big one, idk why I drew homestuck dave tho cuz I haven’t read beyond the first 2 acts lol):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like getting the ideas down, even if it's messy and they never develop fully. I used to be very precious and secretive about ideas, but at this point I’ll toss ideas at my artist and writer friends cuz im not doing anything with them and we’ll tell the stories differently even if I do get to it. I like exploring toxic and unhealthy character relationships. I wind up exploring queer and peripheral topics. Gore and body horror and bodies. Quotes litter my pages, some are concepts, or snippets of conversations characters have, or what I overhear from people irl or streamers, or just words that sound pleasing.
Here’s an RPG I wanted to make about a group of masked kids that steal rich people’s pets to collect the reward money, and it eventually goes all wrong:
Tumblr media
Here’s another RPG about an Angel Surgeon, who needs to deliver a pill by travelling inside a mutated angel with his surgical team (I was really inspired by a yume nikki fangame game called Vis I think):
Tumblr media
I also just like hanging onto all of my sketchbooks to revisit ideas I’ve mindlessly jotted down, seeing what I’ve improved on and sometimes digger deeper into old ideas. Bad Seeds started out as a few sketchy interactions in comics I drew in an itty bitty dollar store sketchbook when I was either 19 or 20 lol first Daniel I ever sketched:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not the first Poet tho; Poet was repurposed from another, even older story I had where he was an obsessive stalker of one of the main characters, but he was very out of place cuz the story was supposed to be a silly and cozy college romance? And Poet just emerged from the ether and brought a ton of darkness into that otherwise lighthearted universe LMAO but I liked his character, so he got shelved until Bad Seeds happened. It's useful, sometimes I've completely forgotten my own ideas and artwork until I pull out a sketchbook and rediscover old ideas.
So yeah, TLDR: when in doubt, just draw! Training and doing different exercises helps improve anatomy, memory and accuracy, giving yourself challenges can help you discover preferences and weaknesses to work on, but don’t forget to just draw what you enjoy and be self-indulgent, even if you think its bad.
My sketchbooks have turned into more of an esoteric visual journal recently as I try to get back into the groove. Some recent scribbles, quite happy with my crayon croissant:

Hope that was a lil helpful! Thank you for messaging!

wait for the enneagram thing, what are the enneagrams of each type of stans (as you've observed) if you know ? im genuinely curious.
ok so a little disclaimer before i start rambling: i’m by no means an expert on enneagrams i just find them absolutely fascinating and i think they’re really helpful overall! like if you know what type you are and what type someone else in your life is, you are evidently able to better understand yourself, them, and therefore better your relationship with them! also considering i have <15 ateez moots, some of which i unfortunately do not know that well, i’m going to try to keep this pretty vague and i’m also going to mostly base it on what i’ve observed in the members themselves (what types i think they may be, but again, i don’t know them personally so take it with a grain of salt!), as I think that one of the reasons our biases are who they are is because we identify with certain aspects of their personality.
general note about the enneagram system: there are 9 types––one of them is your “basic personality.” this is your “core”, dominating personality, something predetermined partially by genetics and pre-natal factors, but also by your childhood (parental figures, significant events/experiences, etc.). however, since one’s personality is fluid and cannot be confined to just one “box” or “type”, everyone inevitably identifies with other types as well (this is where “wings” come in but that’s too complicated so i’ll stick with the core type). no type is “better” or “worse” than another; it’s literally just an explanation of why you are the way you are and how that contributes to how you see the world and interact with others.
hongjoong stans: type 1 (the reformer) or type 3 (the achiever) -> in the most basic sense type 1s are perfectionists. conscientious and ethical. they are set apart from the other types due to the existence of a self-critical “internal voice/monologue”. one may even call them workaholics due to the fact that they’ll often suppress their personal needs/self indulgence in favor of productivity. high standards. a very very strong moral compass. incessant desire to be “right”. fears corruption. type 3s are also known to be workaholics and they struggle with competitiveness. they’re extremely driven and ambitious though they are often overly concerned with their self image. gets wrapped up in their problems; tends to neglect their personal needs and the needs of others. strives to gain love and approval through performance. usually regarded as popular and well-liked among others, the “class president” or “homecoming king/queen/monarch” type. aims to be a role model who inspires others.
seonghwa stans: type 2 (the helper) or type 9 (the peacemaker) -> type 2s at their best are unselfish, altruistic, and maintain an unconditional love for others. extremely warm-hearted and empathetic. great listeners. kind and nurturing. self-sacrificial and people-pleasing. issues with possessiveness and acknowledging their own needs. bases self worth on what they give to others and what they’ll get back in return. may become overly dependent or manipulative. values relationships above all else. embodiment of the “good parent” everyone wishes they had. type 9s avoid anger and conflict at all costs. the mediator. merges with others and makes sacrifices in order to gain a sense of peace, belonging, and harmony, sometimes at the expense of their own feelings. can be very passive-aggressive when upset. trusting and gets along well with others. tendency to be overly complacent. can be very stubborn. maintains a generally optimistic point of view; likes to see the “bright side” of things.
yunho stans: type 4 (the individualist) or type 7 (the enthusiast) -> type 4s want nothing more than to “find themselves” and create their unique sense of self. inspired and creative, they view themselves as unlike any other human being; not in an arrogant way––in a way that makes them focus on their own personal deficiencies as well as hone in on their personal talents. honest and self-reflective. fears abandonment and loss. struggles with negative self image and low self esteem. type 7s epitomize the motto “don’t worry, be happy.” hate being bored; moves towards excitement, freedom, and a variety of interesting experiences. always willing to try something new. difficulty with commitment. extroverted, optimistic, and playful. struggles with impatience and impulsiveness. aims to maintain their freedom and happiness at all costs, never wanting to miss out on worthwhile experiences. spontaneous, agile, and exceptionally fast learners. book smart and impressive mind-body coordination.
yeosang stans: type 4 (the individualist) or type 6 (the loyalist) -> like i said with yunho, type 4s uniquely talented and expressive. gift for healing and the creative arts. always looking for more meaning in things. intense emotional highs and lows, difficult to find a happy medium. can be moody and self conscious. wishes to connect with people who understand them and their feelings. honest with themselves; do not attempt to rationalize their states, only accept them, which enables them to endure suffering with a quiet strength. easier for them to process painful experiences that may overwhelm other types. type 6s are reliable, trustworthy, and hardworking. when they are internally stable and self reliant, they become able to champion themselves and others. seek security and support from others in order to fight against anxiety and insecurity. friends for life. beliefs sometimes go against the “status quo” but they will defend and fight for them fiercely, more so than they’d do for themselves.
san stans: type 2 (the helper) or type 3 (the achiever) -> maybe this is me just projecting since i’m a type 2 wing 3 but these two types really stand out to me in terms of my san biased moots as well as san himself. as i said with hwa, type 2s at their best are unselfish, altruistic, and maintain an unconditional love for others. people person and people-pleaser. extremely empathetic and give good advice. self worth depends on the love and approval of others. considerate, generous, helpful. fears becoming worthless. does not want to be taken for granted. may become overly involved in the lives of others. energetic, romantic, and sensitive to other’s needs and feelings. and like i said with hongjoong, type 3s believe that only through performance, achievement, and success will they gain love and approval. can be very self conscious and self critical; wants to appear their best. motivated and motivating, constantly on a journey of self-improvement. their unwavering belief in themselves and desire for self development inspires others to do the same. a role model.
mingi stans: type 7 (the enthusiast) or type 9 (the peacemaker) -> like i said with yunho, type 7s are constantly seeking out new experiences. playful, optimistic, versatile, and extroverted. can be “scatter-brained” and end up undisciplined or over-extended. become satisfied when they are able to focus their talents on worthwhile goals. approach to life is not unlike “a kid in a candy store”. able to pick up skills and talents with relative ease, though when confronted with too many, they are unable to choose one to focus on. balance is key. like i said with hwa, type 9s are the mediators, the ones to avoid anger and conflict at all costs. passive aggressive under stress. seeks peace through acquiesce and acceptance. able to bring people together and solve conflicts. very in touch with their inner selves. goal-oriented but not aggressive. do not do well under pressure. struggle with finding a strong sense of identity. “spiritual seekers”, yearns for a connection with the cosmos as well as other people.
wooyoung stans: type 7 (the enthusiast) or type 8 (the challenger) -> like i said with yunho and mingi, type 7s hate being bored; they are constantly seeking excitement, freedom, and a variety of interesting and new experiences. an avoider; they avoid pain and fear by escaping into fun and pleasure. often have difficulty with commitment and following through. easily distracted and can become exhausted from being constantly on the go. do not attempt to control. brain works at a mile a minute, much faster than anyone else is able to comprehend. aims to stay upbeat and look forward to a bright, positive future. type 8s are proud, confident, powerful, and strong. not afraid of confrontation. extremely self assertive and independent, might be intimidating to others. have difficulty with allowing themselves to be vulnerable. quick to anger but easy to appease. fears being harmed or controlled by others. denies weakness or fear. refuse to “give in” to social convention.
jongho stans: type 5 (the investigator) or type 8 (the challenger) -> type 5s are visionaries, able to see the world in an entirely new way. focus on complex ideas and skills, sometimes to the point of detachment from the real world. relentless in their pursuit for knowledge. believe that they will eventually figure things out from the safety of their minds. hate feeling useless or incapable. compartmentalize people and situations. minimalist lifestyle; holds back strong feelings and desires/needs. like i said with wooyoung, type 8s are confident, impulsive, and aggressive. not afraid to go after what they want. difficulty being vulnerable. courageous, make good leaders, and protective of the weak. feel the need to control their environment (people as well) which may end up coming off as intimidating and domineering. want to be self reliant by proving their strength and resisting weaknesses. seek total independence and do not like being indebted to anyone. exercise an enormous amount of will, endurance, and persistence in their day-to-day lives.

Personality
⥼ Positive Traits: Warm, perceptive, playful ⥼ Negative Traits: Blunt, resentful, opinionated If you were to ask someone what Sunwoo’s most remarkable characteristic is, they would most likely mention how he treats everyone he meets like they’re an old friend. To some, that can be comforting, his easy smiles and laughs providing them a sense of security and acceptance. To others, that can be irritating: a stranger acting much too presumptuous and all too familiar for comfort. While Sunwoo does his best to be tactful and mindful of others, it’s undeniable that his personality doesn’t always mesh well with others. Sunwoo is not afraid to speak his mind whenever he finds it appropriate and necessary. He highly values improvement for himself and his loved ones. As such, he is the first to call out his friends on their bullshit, in the most loving way possible of course, seeing it as an opportunity for growth. Though he tries to choose his words as carefully as possible and his intentions are never ill, he can sometimes come off as a overly blunt, and in worst case scenarios, harsh.  In that same vein, Sunwoo never hesitates in building people up and often goes out of his way to compliment them, whether that be on their work or even on their looks, gaining him the reputation of a bit of a flirt. This is completely unintentional, as he’s not exactly aware of the way he holds eye contact with people a little longer than average, or the way his genuine tone of voice can slip into something more suggestive. He gets pretty offended if you accuse him of being a flirt and doesn’t really understand why he’s seen that way. He is an extremely genuine person, despite how he may come off. He always says what he means and hopes that other people will do the same for him. Consequently, he greatly dislikes people who are passive aggressive, finding it a waste of everyone’s time to fish out exactly what they mean.
Childhood
Sunwoo was born two years after his older brother, Shinwoo. His parents both worked at well known companies and earned good money, affording them an upper middle class lifestyle, but as a result were rarely ever home. Sunwoo did his best not to take their money for granted, understanding even at a young age just how much they had to break their backs to earn it.
Adolescence
His older brother excelled in school, earning straight A’s and getting into the first college of his choice. Sunwoo, on the other hand, was just a little above average and often felt overshadowed by his brother’s performance. This subsconsciously affected his work ethic. There would be times, for example, when he would just give up studying for an exam because he knew he wouldn’t be able to achieve the grade he wanted—that is, one that was comparable to his brother’s. Once he was old enough, Sunwoo got a job at local convenience store so he could earn his own spending money without bothering his parents. There, he regained some of his confidence and came to realize that his strengths lay outside of a rigorous school system. Still, he completed high school and decided to go to college, majoring in Business.
Tokkitchen
Sick of eating instant ramyeon for the fifth time that week, Sunwoo put aside his textbook and decided to look up simple dishes to cook. He fell into the metaphorical rabbit hole and found himself watching cooking videos for a few hours, landing on a few recipes that seemed simple enough to try. The next day, he went out to buy the necessary groceries and began cooking. His dish was… okay. It wasn’t completely awful, but it wasn’t spectacular either. Strangely enough, he wasn’t discouraged and vowed to try again the next day since he had leftover ingredients. The next day came, and this time the dish was light years better than before. Pleased with the results, Sunwoo continued to watch cooking videos online and improved his skills little by little. When he was able to perfect a pasta recipe, he invited his friends over to his apartment so that he could cook dinner for them—they would be his “first set of guinea pigs” as he put it. They were goofing around, and one of his friends took out their phone to record Sunwoo cooking. He began mimicking the narrative style of the numerous videos he watched, explaining what he was doing in an exaggerated soothing tone. It was one of the most fun nights he’s ever had. His friend sent him the video a few days later. Sunwoo watched it, cringing at the sound of his voice, but recalled how much fun he had filming it. He immediately began searching his college’s website for rentable video equipment, determined to make a cooking video, but for real this time.  After transferring and editing his very first video—"gourmet" meals using convenience store ingredients—onto his bulky, old laptop, he uploaded it to the internet under the username Tokkitchen, a reference to his apparently notorious resemblance to a rabbit. This was mostly for safekeeping—he knew his laptop was on its last legs and he only had so much hard drive space after all—but he also secretly hoped that maybe he would be able to capture a small audience. Sunwoo enjoyed making these videos so much that he went as far as changing his major to Film (his college did not offer a Culinary Arts major.) His technique and style improved significantly, and his viewer count steadily grew. It wasn’t nearly enough to justify doing it full time though, so after he graduated, he began the dreaded job search.
Present
After a year and a half of uploading videos, and just a month into the job search, Tokkitchen was suddenly an overnight success thanks to a video he had certainly not expected to be his claim to fame. It was one of his more casual videos: a half vlog, half cooking tutorial of caramel flan. Commenters seemed particularly delighted by his inclusion of footage of his three failed attempts at not burning the caramel and the resulting existential breakdown he had following them. He continued this model for his next video, and the next video, and the next video, and his channel views continued to grow exponentially. He has been praised by viewers for his down to earth personality and warm, atmospheric style.

Game 3 Post-partum Document
Atelier Unicorn Spread Doing the completely random unicorn card distribution was an interesting approach to finding inspiration for Game 3. I don't think really look at my cards much after the first day because I already had ideas in mind as to what I wanted to create for this game. Im not going to lie, the “Strange Material” card was rather tempting and I almost created a game around silly putty, but i decided to stick to my gut with the card game, bluffing, more than two player idea that I had in mind.
Concept I decided to go with the concept of gardens honestly because I felt that it would be fun to design little vegetables when it came to creating the gold master. I struggled with the concept initially because it was hard to figure out game play mechanics that correlated to gardening in any sense. In the end, I decided to mimic actually gardening through winning the game by building your own garden and ending up with 6 plots.
What Went Wrong
Prototype: Going into the prototype playlets, I was pretty convinced had a kick ass game and everyone was going to love it. It turns out that i got pretty much the opposite reaction. The play testers found the game play to be confusing and anticlimactic and suggested I dumbed my game down to a simple matching game with a twist.
Alpha: Defeated, I took the suggestion of the play testers and made the game too simple for my liking. When I came in to playlets the alpha I was not confident in my game whatsoever. As I watched people play test, I was able to put my finger on the elements that I really wanted to stick in the game, one of which being bluffing. I began to think of how I can improve game to the point where there is a happy medium between simple and interesting.
Beta to Gold Master: I worked with my brother and friend on the game for hours one day and we were able to come up with a game that I finally was in love with. Since I spent so much time on the game play mechanics, my design and illustrations were really lacking at the beta stage but I was excited to get to focus on this for the Gold Master.
What Went Right I am really pleased with how my god master  turned out especially considering where I came from at the begging of this process. I think my whole aesthetic came across smoothly and as I expected. I am happy I took the time and money to get my pieces printed at various locations because the outcome was professional.
What I Learned I learned that working in stages is very helpful to my creative process. I was able to hash out problem after problem this way without getting too stressed about doing too many tasks at once. I learned the importance of doing print tests before spending the money to get something like cards printed. The cards are more neon than I would have liked.
