WINGS OF THE PIRATE KING: BITTER RIVALS, CLOSE FRIENDS — OR SOMETHING MORE?

Shockwaves are rippling across the pirate world today following new rumors that Roronoa Zoro, First Mate and Right Hand to the Pirate King Monkey D. Luffy, and “Black Leg” Sanji, Cook for the Straw Hat Pirates and Left Hand of the Pirate King, have entered into a romantic entanglement.

This story was brought to the attention of World Economy News when an anonymous source sent a leaked internal memo from a Marine base in Shells Town, Yotsuba Island Region in the East Blue. The memo contained notes from an unnamed Marine Lieutenant claiming that, during a personal leave on the Conomi Islands (known former home to Straw Hat Pirate Navigator “Cat Burglar” Nami), he saw Roronoa and Black Leg at the same resort where he was staying. The Lieutenant said, quote:

“It appeared as though Roronoa and Black Leg were arguing heatedly, with Black Leg saying that Roronoa should ‘shut the fuck up and let yourself relax for once in your goddamn life’, to which Roronoa angrily replied that he was trying, but Black Leg kept messing it up with his ‘incessant nagging’. The altercation turned physical and I thought that they had come to blows, but upon closer inspection I realized that it was rather more passionate in nature than violent. I believe this information could potentially be vital in future Marine efforts to apprehend the Straw Hat Pirates, which is why I have asked this message to be passed along to [redacted], and only [redacted].”

This is not the first time that rumors have circulated about potential romantic involvements amongst the notorious Straw Hat Pirates, but while most previous cases have quickly died down when no proof could be obtained, the unnamed Lieutenant included in his memo a photo taken via Cameko. The photo is blurry, but appears to show Roronoa and Black Leg embracing in what we here at World Economy News believe to be a kiss.

If true, this is the most shocking romantic news to hit the pirate world since Cross Guild founders and former Warlords of the Sea Dracule Mihawk and Sir Crocodile tied the knot last year in a private ceremony officiated by the now retired New World Emperor “Red Hair” Shanks. But it begs the question: can the so-called “Wings of the Pirate King” really claim total loyalty to their captain if their hearts truly yearn for each other? What potential dangers are they putting their crew in if this continues? And what happens to the infamous Straw Hat Pirates if the entanglement goes south?

“So what’s the plan?” Sam asked. “Is there even a plan?”

“Surprise party.” Sungjae answered. “At Andrew’s house.”

Sam nodded.

“Why does it have to be Andrew’s house?” She asked.

“Because. . .” Sungjae trailed off but realized he doesn’t have an answer. “I honestly have no idea.”

Sam giggled and Sungjae turned to Hyunsik for an answer.

“Why did we choose Andrew’s house again?” He asked.

“Because he volunteered.” Hyunsik shrugged as they ate lunch in Nicky’s dining room.

“Do you even have gifts?” Eunkwang asked.

“I. . . don’t.” Sam trailed off. “That’s for sure. I kinda don’t have one. Yet.”

“I was thinking of buying [Y/N] a phone case.” Changsub said with a mischievous smirk and everyone stared at him for a moment in silence when it finally dawned on them.

“Yah! That’s mean!” Ann laughed and playfully hit him as everyone laughed along.

“Man, he almost got away with that.” Hyunsik laughed.

Everyone knew that [Y/N] kinda broke her phone that means she doesn’t have a phone at the moment.

“Although, I am honest. I’m going to buy her a phone first though.” Changsub said.

“The perks of being rich.” Sungjae smirked.

“You’re rich too, you know.” Minhyuk rolled his eyes playfully. “I mean, all of us are.”

“Not all.” Nicky pointed out.

“I quite agree.” Sam said as she went to wash the dishes they used.

“Where’s [Y/N] by the way?” Peniel asked.

“She’s with Shannon.” Minhyuk said. “Though some of us are going to join her and help distract [Y/N] so that she doesn’t get the hint of the surprise.”

“Also, there will be people that will decorate for the party at my house.” Andrew said. “Who’s the group so that we can get started?”

“I’m going to cook some food so I’m going to have to go to the grocery store first.” Nicky said.

“I’m going to help with cooking so I guess I’ll be coming along.” Hyunsik decided.

“I’m in charge of the banner.” Ann said. “I’m going to take Sam with me.”

Sam was surprised as she just came back in the room after washing the dishes.

“Don’t you want Iris to be with you?” Sam suggested.

“You don’t want to?” Ann asked, looking a bit worried.

“No, it’s not like that.” Sam defended herself. “It’s just that I’m not good at stuff like that.”

“I’m in the distraction team.” Iris said. “So either way, you’re gonna end up going with her.”

“Okay, okay. I’m game!” Sam smiled.

“I’m gonna facilitate my house.” Andrew said and with a smirk he added, “So you all should behave yourselves!”

They all laughed along.

“The main point here is that Sungjae isn’t supposed to be here.” Nicky said. “You’re the surprise.”

“Yeah, cause she thinks I’m innnn USA.” Sungjae smiled.

“With Peniel.” Ilhoon reminded.

“That’s why the two of you shouldn’t be seen.” Eunkwang said.

“Better keep up the act until the big surprise.” Sam said.

“So,” Ilhoon started. “Who’s in charge of the cake?”

“Eve and Eunkwang.” Ann said. “You’re gonna be in charge of that.”

“Okay, okay. Yes, Madame.” Eve giggled.

“So, Iris and Minhyuk are going to help with distracting her.” Hyunsik said. “So we’ll text you to tell you that everything is ready?”

“Yep!” Iris smiled.

“So that leaves me and Ilhoon for the decorations.” Changsub said. “Any specific requests?”

“Roses?” Sam suggested.

“Balloons!” Eve laughed.

“Streamers!” Andrew smiled.

“What?” Nicky had a confused expression. “What did you say? Strippers?”

Ilhoon faced palmed and laughed with the others.

“Streamers, Nicky.” Iris repeated a little loudly and a little slowly. “Streamers. Why are you even talking about strippers? We’re not opening a club.”

Everyone laughed and Nicky apologized but she was also laughing at her mistake.

“Okay, okay!” Ilhoon gathered everyone’s attention. “Let’s do this!”

“Okay,” Sungjae started and stared at the green lawn of Andrew’s house. “If me and Peniel aren’t supposed to be seen, where can we go that we can help?”

“Kitchen?” Andrew suggested.

“Yeah, we could use some help here.” Nicky said. “Come on, it’ll be fun!”

“Ok, ok!” Sungjae smiled and went over to Nicky and helped her carry some grocery bags while Peniel help gather up the kitchen utensils that was needed in the process of making the dishes they were going to make.

“So, we’re going to decorate this garden.” Ilhoon said as he looked around.

“We could put fairy lights.” Changsub suggested.

“Yeah,” Ilhoon agreed. “And we could put the banner over there.”

He pointed over at a black wall.

“The hardest part in this is if the girls will come and see our work and they wouldn’t like it.” Changsub laughed.

“Nah, I’m sure they’ll love it.” Ilhoon smiled as they both got to work.

“How about this picture?” Sam pointed to a picture of [Y/N] in the gallery filled with her various photos.

“Yeah, that can work.” Ann said. “And we can put it in this background.”

She showed a cool ombre style background.

“Yeah! That’s awesome!” Sam exclaimed.

“And maybe this font?” Ann selected a font style to use for the birthday greeting.

“Woah, looks great!” Sam smiled.

“Let’s send it to the others.” Ann smiled as she captured a photo of it and sent it to the others.

“Hey, what if we print out a picture of Sungjae too?” Sam suggested. “Then we’ll make him sign it.”

“Yeah, we could do that.” Ann was excited as they got to work again and browsed pictures of Yook Sungjae.

When the finished, they gave each other a high five and told the others about it too.

“Hey, [Y/N].” Shannon said. “We have to go to the studio. Your manager says that he has something to tell you.”

“What?” [Y/N] was surprised. “Please don’t let it be work. I’m so tired. I’ve been working for days. I’ve been working on choreographies for days. Come on, let me rest.”

“Come on, it won’t be so bad.” Iris said reassuringly, and she also knew what their manager had in mind but acted like she doesn’t know anything. “Come on, let’s go see him.”

They went over to the studio with Minhyuk driving them and when they opened the door of the building, [Y/N] was met with bits of colorful papers falling from the ceiling as a chorus of “Happy Birthday!” greeted her.

[Y/N] smiled brightly as everyone came to give her their best wishes and some gifts.

“Happy birthday to my favorite dancer!” Her manager, Sir Hodgson, said as he gave her a small present.

“Oh! Wow!” [Y/N] laughed. “Wow, you even bothered to give me a present!”

“Yeah, but, you know.” He leaned in closer to her ear. “Next time, when your you get paid with your salary, at least treat me a little mango shake, huh?”

“Sir!” [Y/N] playfully pushed him away and they both laughed.

“You know, you should be treating me with a mango shake because you get a higher salary than me, hm?” She said and they laughed more.

“Anyway, happy birthday! Keep up the good work!” Sir Hodgson said with a smile before everyone decided to get on with their lives.

“And give me a mango shake!” He said before he went inside his office.

“So? What’s up?” Minhyuk asked Iris.

“They’re ready!” Iris said in a hushed whisper before they took [Y/N] to the surprise they prepared.

“Okay, wow.” Sam said in awe as she looked at the garden. There were fairy lights hanging around and under them were round tables and chairs, each with a little lantern in the middle to give off more light.

“They outdid themselves, right?” Eve said as she approached Sam and stood beside her for a while.

“Yeah, they did.” Sam said. “It’s so beautiful.”

Eve nodded.

“Now, excuse me.” She said and Sam turned to look at her in curiosity. “I should go and give my boyfriend a kiss for making such a beautiful thing.”

Sam laughed as Eve walked away to find Ilhoon.

Sam took one last look at the garden arrangement before she set off to find Sungjae and have that photo of him that she and Ann printed out be signed by him.

“Hey, Sungjae!” She said as she went in the kitchen to see Nicky and the others busily working.

“What?” Sungjae looked up and wiped his forehead.

“I need you to sign something.” Sam said and they both went to find a flat surface for him to properly write on.

“Hey, have you seen Ilhoon?” Andrew went in the kitchen and asked everyone.

“I haven’t seen him.” Eunkwang said as he carefully moved the cake into a porcelain plate.

“Have you seen Ilhoon?” Ann went in.

“No, we haven’t.” Hyunsik said as he sliced some cheese.

“Where would he be?” Eunkwang asked as he placed the cake in the fridge. “Have you asked Sam? I saw them talking a while ago.”

“Where’s Sam?” Andrew asked.

“She and Sungjae went out to find a table and a marker.” Hyunsik said.

“Thanks, I’ll go check.” Andrew said.

“And I’ll go find Changsub.” Ann said and they both went separate ways.

“Sam,” Andrew said when he found her at the dining room with Sungjae signing a photo.

“Yes?” Sam asked.

“Have you seen Ilhoon?” Andrew asked.

“Oh, yeah.” Sam said. “I think. Eve said something about kissing him.”

Andrew gave off an annoyed expression.

“Try the closet.” Sam suggested jokingly but he did just that and sure enough, they were there.

“Guys, come on! Not in my house!” Andrew whined as Eve and Ilhoon went out of the closet, giggling.

“Geez, they’re not even drunk yet.” Andrew rolled his eyes and told Ilhoon to go to Ann and Andrew followed him while he told Eve to go and check the karaoke machine.

Ilhoon and Changsub hung up the banner with Ann’s directions. In the corner, Sam and Eunkwang were cutting the thorns out of the roses. And one by one, the others helped in putting out silverware and plates before they displayed the food.

For a few minutes, they rested and freshened up before the celebrant arrives.

They were lounging around the living room, talking lightly when they heard a car stop in their block.

Ilhoon looked out the window to check and saw that it was Minhyuk’s car.

“Guys! They’re here!” He informed everyone.

“Quick! Hide!” Hyunsik told Sungjae and Peniel and the two went to find hiding places.

Everyone else scrambled into a formation that made no sense before the door opened.

“Sam, pass the streamers!” Ilhoon whispered and she tossed him a tube before she shoved one to Hyunsik who was right beside her.

When the door opened, there came a huge bang! and then streamers fell down slowly from above as they greeted [Y/N].

“Happy birthday!” They all chorused around her and they proceeded to go and give her a hug.

“Happy birthday, my twin!” Eve said to her in a joking way because they were often told that they looked alike.

“Happy birthday!” Sam went on and hugged her. “I love you.”

“Happy birthday!” Hyunsik smiled at her.

“Awww!” [Y/N] gushed. “Thank you guys!”

“Oh, by the way.” Andrew gave her a photograph of Sungjae with his signature on it.

[Y/N] took it from him and she was ecstatic to see the picture.

“You guys just didn’t.” She peered at everyone. “Did you really go all the trouble?” To USA? Just to let him sign this?”

“Eh, worth it.” Hyunsik shrugged.

“Also, here.” Changsub gave [Y/N] a small box.

“What is it?” She asked.

“Open it.” He smiled and she did.

Waiting inside the box was a brand new phone.

“You didn’t!” [Y/N] exclaimed in shock.

“I did!” Changsub said, spreading out his arms for a hug. “Happy birthday!”

“Thank you!” [Y/N] hugged him and some of them cooed.

Ring! Ring!

“Oh, look!” Hyunsik spoke up. “Someone’s calling you.”

[Y/N] and Changsub broke the hug and she looked at the caller ID, it was an unknown number.

“Hello?” She asked.

“Hey, jagi.” Came Sungjae’s voice.

“Jagi!” [Y/N] said excitedly. “How are you?”

“We’re good.” Sungjae said. “Here, Peniel has something to say.”

“Hey, [Y/N]!” Peniel said happily. “Happy birthday!”

“Thanks, Peniel.” [Y/N] smiled.

“Don’t be sad on your birthday, okay?” He said. “Then again, we’re not as far as you think you are.”

“Yeah,” [Y/N] agreed. “Cause you’re always in my heart.”

“That’s right, jagi.” Sungjae said because Peniel passed back the phone to him.

“When are you coming back?” [Y/N] asked.

“Soon.” Sungjae smiled and Peniel snuck up behind her. “You won’t even notice that I’m already by your side.”

Peniel placed his hands on [Y/N]’s eyes, engulfing her sight in darkness.

“Who is this?” She asked after a little squeak of surprise.

“Guess whoo?” Peniel whispered in her ear with a big smile.

“Sungjae?” [Y/N] guessed.

“Nope.”

“Nicky?” She asked.

“Wow, I grew tall.” Nicky mused and they all laughed.

“Okay, this is your last try.” Peniel said.

“What?!” [Y/N] exclaimed. “I didn’t know there were only three tries!”

“Well, you do now!” He laughed.

“Ummm. Eunkwang?” She asked.

“Sorry, I’m right beside my own girl.” Eunkwang said as he held Sam’s hand.

Peniel took away his hands from [Y/N]’s eyes and he spread his arms.

“Surprise! Happy birthday!” He said happily.

[Y/N] was surprised and she laughed.

“What are you doing here? I thought you’re in USA with Sungjae!” She said. “Did you leave him there with foreigners?”

“Yeah, I’m that evil.” Peniel said with a mischievous smirk before he acted out an evil laugh.

Everyone laughed along.

Then suddenly, someone hugged [Y/N] from behind and lifted her before she was swung around.

She screamed for a while, demanding that she was to be set down while the others laughed.

When she felt that she was back on the ground, she turned behind her to yell at whoever did that to her and she was face to face with no other than Sungjae.

Her eyes held surprise but she wasn’t fazed by him.

“Why’d you do that?” She playfully hit him and laughed.

“Surprise!” Sungjae stooped down and smiled at her. “Happy birthday, jagi.”

“So the whole USA thing was a lie?” [Y/N] asked.

“Uh, yeah. Sorry about that.” Sungjae rubbed the back of his neck.

“Next time you travel, you better bring me along.” She playfully suggested.

Sungjae smiled.

“No problem, jagi.”

And with that, the celebration started. There were a lot of food to eat, a lot of stories to tell and a lot of songs to sing.

All of these people gathering around for the sake of one person: [Y/N].

I just want to say first off I don’t know the source material this rpg is based off of, so if anything I suggest or recommend contradicts with the canon please feel free to disregard it or let me know and I’ll remove it from the opinion!

So first impressions are good here!! You have a great colour palette and aesthetic going on with your background image and the relation to the plot. The banners underneath where the tags are sort of jarr me away from the content of your rpg -- it looks like stars which I couldn’t find in relation to your concept so maybe change that design?? But it isn’t a big enough deal to take me away from the idea in general. The custom fonts the theme uses are a bit off -- they look nice but the flowery nature of them doesn’t mesh well with the concept. But that’s a theme for you and can’t really be helped. If the theme maker doesn’t mind the custom fonts being changed, I could help you do that if you need! The thing that does take me some time and the change I would recommend you look at is the information in your sidebar. While all important, it presents as just a block of text that can cause eyes to glaze over. Maybe adding in some bold, italic, underlined, or different color font would help mix it up and keep it sort of fresh? That way it isn’t just “text wall here,” you know?

While I’m personally not a fan of themes that present this kind of navigation page -- where everything is sort of in different boxes and you have a lot of imagery at once, what I think about a theme is irrelevant to an impartial opinion. So y’all definitely utilized the space given to you really well. Your links listed are important and your calendar space will no doubt fill up over time. And the graphic made about the text is really cool!!

So objectively, your Plot is good. It provides all of the information needed for someone who knows the content/source material to get a good feel for what your rpg is gonna be about. But I think my not knowing the source material is actually a good thing in this case because it means I can tell y’all that if you don’t know the story, everything is… really hella confusing. I don’t know if you wanted to market to people who haven’t seen the show or leave your member base to people who have seen it, but that might be something to think about and revisit at a later date. Otherwise the length is good and I enjoy the introductory paragraph style and the summary at the bottom.

Your Rules are where I’ll be recommending the most changes. They are good, and have everything you need, but they’re very wordy. So much of what you say in a whole sentence you could simply make a bullet point with and be done with it. Long rules are good, but when its just a simple matter of what people need to know, potential members could end up intimidated by the sight of them. Your first rule, for example: “This group is a 21+ discord roleplay - for both mun and characters - don’t apply if you’re not at least 21 years old.” That could easily be condensed into: “newflashhq is a discord rp for muns/muses 21+” and done. I’d say look through all of your rules point-by-point and see where you can condense them. My one big change suggestion would be the rule about being open to all genders, sexualities, and races. An easy fix would be, for example: “We are a LGBT+ and POC inclusive group, and encourage diversity in our members and characters” or something of that ilk.

So while your Locations page is a good idea, I don’t know if you can see a few formatting problems on your end? Overall I think it’s a great idea and provides everything potential and current members will need, so it’s a great thing. But there are some issues with the theme. I’ll include a picture below of what I mean:

If you tried to install a custom font, it didn’t work and instead is showing Comic Sans. If you want that, that’s fine! If you don’t, that’s something to note. If you want a tutorial on how to install and host custom fonts I can link you to it!! Also, your images cut off and are not the width of the description boxes they are beside. I don’t know if that’s a you thing or a theme thing, but I’d look into it!

I like your Application a lot! Asking for headcanons tells you as admins things about that character and helps people as applicants think deeper beyond the character bio, so that’s a great thing to include. And you’ve check-marked everything I would normally look for in an app so I don’t have any recommended changes here.

So I clicked on a few of your Skeletons just to see the layout and such, and again I’m not a big fan of them but I can see why you chose it in relation to the theme you’ve chosen?? And they are aesthetically pleasing but I’m not getting a lot on the information of the character right away. But when you have more taken roles this will obviously change so I’m not judging! One thing however: in the “Inspiration” link I think you might have some broken links, because when I clicked on one for “The Runaway” I got this:

If you’re trying to link to a new url, you need to include the “https://” in the link section of the theme because they’re set to automatically redirect to a page on the current url. So switching it to “https://newflashinspo.tumblr.com/tagged/runaway” will remove that problem!

Your Discord Guide is honestly so impressive and a great resource. Did you guys put it together yourselves?? Because not only did it answer my questions on how discord rps work, it also opened my mind to them because it provided a lot of information I didn’t know I needed. I’m sure it will also do that for people looking to join but hesitant because of the platform. Seriously guys, if you cleaned it up and added a few more points on an intro and went into more detail, it could be something you post on an rph and a great resource for the community. The one suggestion I’d recommend is explaining a bit about the Instagram and Snapchat sections in relation to your discord concept, because that lost me?? All of a sudden I was like “wait there’s stuff to do on instagram, too?” before understanding a little further down, so maybe just a quick sentence about how that pertains to the group would help a ton.

My FAVORITE THING about your rpg: probably your Discord Guide and, by affiliation, how helpful you appear to be in acclimating your members and potential members to how your group will be run. That’s always an important thing no matter what platform you use but with your concept it really helps.

My LEAST FAVORITE THING about your rpg: the Rules page, and that’s just because it needs some work before looking a little more formal and accessible to anyone looking at it. I recommended how to go about changes above, but let me know if I can explain anything else.

OVERALL, my excitement would be kiddy-corner to what I know about the source content, so I’m pretty impartial to your idea as a whole, but in terms of being a formatted rpg with information, skeletons, a concept, and a direction for your characters and members to go, you’ve done everything needed and then some!! "Alright bye, dad! I'll see you later!" I yelled out by the door getting ready to meet my friend Elizabeth at a tattoo parlor. I turned eighteen a week ago and I really wanted to get one then but I was too busy packing my stuff to get one.

I read Liz's text as I was getting ready to buckle my seat in my white G-Wagon I got as a present last year for Christmas.

"Hey, Siri text Liz, I'm on my way and how hot?" I say to my phone or Siri in specific. The parlor is just down the road from where I live, very convenient if I want more tattoos in the future. The shop is a part of a building probably a block wide and is shared with a small cafe. The word cafe makes it sounds so fancy, like something in France but it looks more of like a hang out spot.As soon as I got out of my car I was engulfed in a hug by Liz.

"Girl, I went in there and a boy with tattoos all along his arm is he hella fine. Not only is he tasty looking but he is 18." Liz said gushing over this guy.

"Okay, chill. I'll be the judge of how hot I think he is. But anyway I was thinking of getting a flower on the side of my boob. What are you getting?" I asked her while locking my car and into the parlor with Liz at my side.

"I'm thinking of getting 'You Can' in a very minimalist font on my wrist." She replied.

" Hey, do you guys have an appointment or...?" This really cute guy at the counter asked us. He has a very hot/cute fuckboy hair cut but he has one some round glasses. I also noticed that he doesn't have tattoos along his arm but just an inked out band with flowers growing along it.

"Uhh yeah, we have an appointment for two under Victoria and Liz?" Liz stated while asking the boy.

"Alright sweet, just have a seat and they'll come out soon." The boy said referring to the artists. Liz and I looked around the pretty packed shop and sat down on a bench waiting.

"That's not the hot guy I saw earlier, but I hope he's still here and I really want him to ink one of us." Liz said clapping quietly like a little girl. We waited for not that long until a girl and a guy came out from the back to greet us. The girl looked very badass and had some high-rise jeans that were uneven at the bottom that ended just above her ankles, she was wearing a flared long sleeved striped turtle neck under a black silk tank top that could pass as a lingerie top. She paired her outfit with a cute mustered yellow floppy styled hat but it was a suede material.

The guy, on the other hand, looked exactly like how Liz described him. The vibe you get from just looking at him from afar makes you want to know more. He looks like the type of guy your parents don't want you hanging around, yet he does look hella fine.

"Liz?" The guy came up to me asked with a smile.

"Victoria." I smiled back.

"Haha sorry, I'm Rome. Do you want to tell me what you want for a tattoo?" He asked mentioning to follow him. We landed in his office which I'm guessing. Everything is coated with white and back, from the carpet to the floors. There was a cork board hanging above his desk with sketches of different tattoos or artworks that I guess he did.

"I really want like two or three flowers in a bunch just on the side right here," I said rubbing the left side of my side boob. It was more like on the side ribs though. I don't have a huge chest so I thought it wouldn't be as awkward to talk about the placement but he is being very chill about it and it's making my very comfortable and I feel like I'm in safe hands.

"Sweet that sounds cool do you have any preferences on what flowers you want.?" Rome asked. I thought about it while he was drawing what I wanted into a sketch book. It seemed like forever on me just thinking about the flowers so I bravely said. " You choose." Showing a smile.

"Sick alright. " He smiled widely and started to sketch more. "How does this look?" He showed me his drawing of what I wanted and it's perfect. Smiling I said, "It's perfect."  He then took me into another room full of tattoo chairs and ink stations. There looked like four other people were getting tattoos I guessed growing off of hearing the buzzing noises of multiple ink stations.

"Alrighty babe, just sit tight right here while I get everything set up." The way Rome said babe can just melt my heart into a puddle. The more I sat there the more nervous I was to get the tattoo. What if I regret it? What if my boobs start sagging and the tattoo starts sagging too? The more I thought, the more I start shaking. Rome soon comes over with a black tray full of stuff and notices that I'm shaking. He kneels down to my eye level and grabs both my hands around his inked out one.

"Don't worry about it okay? It may hurt just a little bit, but it would be totally worth it in the end. Do you think I would get this many on my body if it would hurt a lot?" He told me making me feel a lot better.

As soon as he sees that I'm calmed down he asks me to lay down on my side so my left side could be tattoo-able, and lift up my shirt just above where I wanted it to be hiding my tits. Is it weird that I like having him stare at my boobs even if it's just the side?

"Alright, since this is on the ribs, it is gonna hurt a little bit and if it does you can just tell me and you can have a break if you want. " He said putting his hand on mine. Me nodding in reply, mentally preparing myself for this. As I'm just laying there watching him put on some black rubber gloves, I notice his rolled up gray sweat-shirt casually over his arm tattoos. There was a rose just laying right on his arm, a dagger that was pierced in his skin, and my favorite so far is The Great Wave of Kanawaga just above his rose.  These are only a few out of all the many very detailed tattoos on his arm. He then went on to put the stencil on and rubbed it there with a small damp towel. After a couple of minutes waiting for it to dry, Rome turned on the machine letting it roar with a loud buzzing noise.

"Alright, I'm gonna start tattooing okay?" Rome asked and I replied with a nod. As the needle comes in contact with my skin, I try to keep calm while trying to memorize Rome, as if I'm not gonna be able to see him again. Black hair, only about a couple inches and end just right under his eyes, plump pink lips like a chubby little Asian baby and a jawline that the gods would worship. It's not disturbingly sharp but very definable.

Over forty-five minutes have passed and the tattoo is already done.

"Damn this fucking looks nice. " Rome says wiping away the ink. "Do you wanna take a look?"  

"I'm so nervous right now. I don't know."

Rome laughed and said, "Let me wrap this up for you and let's see from then. Rome looked in one of the drawers and took out a clear like tape, saran wrap thing and stuck right on top of my new tattoo. He then held my arm lightly pulling me off the bed and placed his hand on my lower back and lead me to a giant wall mirror and positioned me to where I could see the flowers. I turned my head and looked at it.

"Oh wow. This is beautiful." I said is gasp. "This is more than I wanted. Thank you." I said hugging him.

"No problem, I'm just glad you like it. "  Rome said. "Alright, I think your friend is done. Do you wanna go out?" Me nodding in response.

"Tori! Look at mine. I'm so excited,,," Liz said and continued to talk about a party this weekend or something. And me drifting off listening to Rome talk with the boy at the counter earlier. "That was my last one for today, soI'm gonna head out." He said putting on his coat and walking out. "Right let's go get something to eat. " Liz said dragging me out of the parlor and to my car. getting out my car keys I see Rome get on his bike and putting on his helmet. While putting on his helmet he catches me looking and smirks and get on his bike starting it and riding away.

Zucchini Oat Bars

Allow me to introduce you to this Zucchini Oat Bars. They’re my new favorite snack. Last weekend I found myself with a plethora of zucchini that needed to be used up so I decided to do some experimenting. I’ve been wanting to make a baked good using dates for a while now. I use dates often in things like energy balls, but I haven’t ever used them in baking. Since I had my sights set on a higher fiber bar, it seemed like the perfect time to use them. 

The combination of oats, dates and ground flaxseed give these Zucchini Oat Bars a good amount of fiber per serving. Plus I packed a whole cup of zucchini in there so they’ll be perfect for summer when gardens and farmers markets are overflowing with zucchini. 

Zucchini Oat Bars

Let me just say right off the bat that these bars are not overly sweet. In fact they’re not all that sweet at all so if you’re looking for something more dessert-like, you’re gonna want to add some sugar or maple syrup to this recipe. However, since they’re naturally sweetened, with just a few chocolate chips, I’m happy to serve them to my kids for breakfast or at snack time. 

They’re fairly low in fat, so you could add a smear of peanut butter to the top, or even mix some peanut butter into the batter for a dose of added fats. And these bars are moist…so definitely store them in the fridge so they don’t get moldy.

Zucchini Oat Bars

These high fiber Zucchini Oat Bars are naturally sweetened with dates. Top them with peanut butter for a quick, kid-friendly breakfast or snack!

Ingredients

1.5 cups rolled oats 3/4 cup medjool dates (pitted and roughly chopped – approx 5–7 dates) 2 eggs 1 cup shredded zucchini (excess water removed) 1/4 cup oil (i use avocado oil) 1/4 cup ground flaxseed 1/4 cup applesauce 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup chocolate chips (or more if desired)

Instructions

Place the oats and dates in a food processor and process until well chopped.

Add remaining ingredients (except chocolate chips or other mix-ins) and process until smooth.

Add chocolate chips (or other mix-ins) and pulse a few times to mix.

Pour into 9×9 pan lined with parchment paper and bake at 375 for 22-27 minutes.

Let cool at least 15 min in the pan before cutting. Store in the fridge.

Notes

You could sub raisins, craisins, dried blueberries, shredded coconut etc for the chocolate chips if you want. You could also mix in some peanut butter or hemp seeds to add some healthy fats. If your dates are not super soft and squishy, soak them in hot water for 10 min before using.

I’m just so in love with these guys. And the food processor helps chop up the shredded zucchini even further so my kids pretty much just focus on the fact that they’re eating something with a few chocolate chips in it and they’re happy.

How To Become The Cool Aunt

Becoming an Aunt and subsequently the Cool Aunt is a rite of passage that many women will be lucky to experience in their lifetime. We aren’t the moms. There’s no moral or legal obligation for us to be present in their lives. Rather, our role exists as a matter of choice. Being an active and positive female figure for our nieces and nephews means they will grow up with more than just their parents as influencers and supportive figures. There’s strength in numbers. Being active in their lives means they have the potential to be stronger as they grow up. A strong female who plays an active role in their niece and nephew (niblings) lives is what I call the Cool Aunt.

I have been a self proclaimed Cool Aunt for 13 years now. It all started when my cousin gave birth to Lola (my niece by choice). Then some years later, I was gifted with three more beautiful niblings, Layla, Jayden, and Julian from my sister. I’ve committed a good portion of my life cultivating a unique relationship each of them and adapting to their needs and interests as they have grown.

So how do you become the Cool Aunt?

Becoming the Cool Aunt takes time and dedication, but it’s achievable for everyone. Every child will be slightly different in how they connect and bond with their Aunt. However, there are certain universal truths and guidelines for starting your journey to Cool Aunt status.

1. Start young.

The easiest way to establish that you’re someone to be looked up to is to be present in their life starting from a very young age. Ideally this with begin when they’re babies. If they constantly see your face, hear your voice, and feel your loving touch, a bond will immediately begin to be formed.

2. Be their friend no matter what their age.

Once they become active little people, the best way to get to know them is to be their playmate. It doesn’t matter their age, we all like to play in our own way.

Toddlers are highly active and sometimes unpredictable. They are fickle little critters, so you have to be ready for that going in. Get down to their level and play with whatever they’re playing with. This may change every 10 minutes or so but on the upside, you can save a little money and cancel your gym membership. Toddlers are a workout all on their own.

As they grow into preschool and school age years, they’ll take more interest in coloring, drawing, crafting, playing sports, and creating make-believe games, etc. Wherever their interest lies, so should yours.

Listen to their music

Play their games

Watch their shows and movies

Once they become teenagers, they’ll most likely have their “thing” figured out. If they’re musicians, ask them to play you a song. If they’re artists, ask them to make you a picture. If they just love playing video games, ask them to teach you how to play. The common theme here is to make them a priority. That’s what all Cool Aunts do.

3. Spend time with them – without their parents.

At all ages, people tend to be completely different when they’re around their parents. I can freely admit to still being this way at 36 years old.

It’s a good idea for Aunts to plan for time with niblings away from their parents so you can get to know each other better. When they’re young it’s easiest to do this by babysitting. However, when they no longer need a caregiver, you can take them out for ice-cream, get a manicure together, or offer to be their ride when they want to go somewhere.

Also, if you have the means to, inviting them to your house for visits and sleepovers. Showing the initiative that you want to spend time with them makes them feel special. In addition, it gives you another tally mark in the Cool Aunt column.

4. Be adaptive in your relationships.

When you have several niblings, no two are exactly alike even if they’re the same gender. Their ages will most likely vary and so will their interests. For example, one of my nephews LOVES his nerf guns and could play war with me all day. However, my other nephew is really into playing video games and watching others play them too. Instead of trying to get everyone to play the exact same game, or even a game that I like, I split my time with both. Chances are one of them is going to take interest in the game anyway because kids will go wherever the action is, but nevertheless, make the conscious effort to divide your time.

Even if what they like isn’t your favorite thing to do, try your best to put in effort so they associate your presence with someone who cares about them. My niece was really into Barbies, but I’m not a girlie girl. It wasn’t something I took to naturally, but I played them with her anyway because she wanted me there.

5.) Stay open minded.

Much like the world was different from when your parents were growing up, it’s the same for the kids now. How annoying was it to hear the judgmental, “When I was a kid…” Don’t be that Aunt. Play along with how the world is operating now instead of being stuck in past.

Let them be who they are – not who you want them to be. Even if you’re a younger Aunt, the internet, social media, and cell phones have all changed the way we communicate.

If they have an Instagram account, follow them and like their pictures, but be weary of over commenting. If you’re thinking to yourself, “Is this too much?” – it probably is.

If they have a cell phone – text them regularly. Yes, I said text, you’re most likely going to get the best response that way. Share a funny meme, let them know you’re thinking about them, but avoid the group text with their Mom. No one likes group texts.

6.) Take a queue from the late George Michael – Listen without prejudice.

Without a doubt, at some point, you’re gonna hear things that you don’t want to hear. There will come a day when an uncomfortable conversation comes about like, dating, bodily functions, fighting with parents/siblings, changes in their bodies, etc. There’s bound to be something that’ll make your eye twitch. Cool Aunts will just let them talk.

It’s better that they come to you to confide in and to seek answers instead of google. They’ll probably still look up things like “How do I divorce my parents?”. However, google isn’t going to wrap its arms around them or dry their tears when they’re upset. Cool Aunts have the answers like google but with emotional support. You’ve been where they are. Don’t judge them for needing to vent, be the nonjudgmental listener they’ve even seeking.

7.) If you’re a Long Distance Aunt – Get creative.

There’s no reason why long distance Aunts can’t also be Cool Aunts. I was a long distance Aunt for 9 years before my shrimps moved to New York. Now they live 20 minutes away from me. It took more effort for sure, but it was an investment in our relationship which was very important to me.

I found ways to stay connected to them like FaceTiming for Dinner, exchanging refrigerator art, writing letters to them as Santa Claus, sending voice notes at bedtime. All those little things add up. There’s no such thing as I can’t because we’re far away. You can if you put in the time. Here are some ideas in my post on 10 Smart Phone Activities To Bond Long Distance.

8. It’s better late than never.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to get to know your niblings from a young age, don’t lose all hope. People form relationships at all different stages in life. Some people get married and inherit big families. Others may have separations that cause them to be away for extended periods of time.

It doesn’t matter when you start in this case. What matters is that you make the efforts to form a relationship. The biggest determining factor in Cool Aunt status is having the desire to have a relationship. If there’s a will, there’s always a way.
