An original twist on the old time travel scenario - in which it's a medieval person travelling TO the future instead of the other way around. Splendidly researched (duh, it's Mortimer!) and with a compelling story that is quick-paced and full of interesting tidbits - I almost couldn't put it down. But most important of all is that it presents a view of the human experience that very few time-travel books manage - to the person of the past, how have we changed as people over time? Ian Mortimer’s narrative introduction describing the derring-do of Edward’s escape from Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella is fantastic. I found myself missing that narrative voice in the bulk of the text.

The fresh research regarding the ultimate fate of Edward II is fascinating; So much skullduggery...

I made it to about hour 7, and found my attention waning as Mortimer gets into the weeds of Edward III’s military exploits.

I’ll probably pick this up again in text form, so that I can skim the military minutiae and focus on the economic and political aspects of Edward’s reign.
