DT IA Top Tips (from someone who just handed their's in)

1. Pick your design opportunity Pick it, and pick it well! Nothing blows more than realising your design opportunity is kinda trash. Importantly, make sure you pick something that you are passionate about, and that could be solved in a variety of ways. You don't want something with only one possible solution, otherwise it won't make for a good IA.

2. Take the time to create a scaffold Personally, I switched to writing my IA in PowerPoint instead of Word and I CANNOT recommend it enough. Open a PowerPoint document and create a scaffold. One of the best parts about doing it in PowerPoint is that you can quickly double-click anywhere on any page and add notes about ideas you had (I also recommend using that like script feature, where the text isn't on the slide). I very highly recommend using this template, though you don't have to follow it exactly:

3. Initial Sketches Create your initial sketches. Don't get fancy with them because you actually want them to be a little trash. The more downsides your initial concepts have, the more improvements you can discuss.

4. Chunk it out The DT IA is very conveniently broken into sections. Your teacher may set soft deadlines for each criterion; if they don't, set some for yourself and make yourself finish each one by a deadline. (Personally, I like to set pre-deadlines about a week prior, so instead of cramming the day before I cram a week before) Despite what you may or may not be able to do in other subjects, this is NOT something you can cram the day before. Remember that it is worth 40% of your final grade!

5. S.T.U.D.Y CAD Spend Time Unhappily Doing Your CAD. CAD isn't fun, and if you disagree you are a marvel to me. However, it is also essential to getting a decent grade on this assessment, so make sure you take the time to just get it done. If you don't know how to do CAD, pull up some online tutorials and learn (and do so BEFORE the IB stress kicks in).

Last night I got high and wrote a program to find all of the unused elemental symbols. It turns out there’s 585 of them and it’s much less interesting the next day.

One interesting finding: I couldn’t be bothered to generate all possible one and two letter strings, so I asked ChatGPT to write me code that would do all that for me. It worked surprisingly well!
