Happy Philippine Eagle week!
The week starts June 4 to 10 every year. Did you know a Philippine Eagle (Haring Ibon) nest can be as large as 2 meters wide in Mindanao? In Luzon nest sizes were found to be a bit smaller so far. Biologists think it might be a way Haring Ibon in Luzon adapt to typhoons.

For this project, I have taken inspiration from the Filipino artist Whang-Od, a lady that started tattooing from the young age of 15. She first learned from her father, breaking stereotypes of women using her exceptional talent and skill potential that her father believed she possessed. Her art originates from the Mambabatok culture, incorporating designs like eagles, for warriors who killed enemies, python skin and other geometric designs.
Whang-Od began tattooing and travelling far to villages around the Phillipines. Many communities would request for her to imprint symbols carried through their ancestry to individuals reaching a significant point in their lives. For men, she would do bikking tattoos, a chest tattoo that stretched over the shoulders and arms, taking several days to complete and in return, the individual paid in food, rice or a large pig. Women were also tattooed, to show fertility and beautification. As for tattooing materials, she would use completely organic and naturally sourced materials, consisting of charcoal and water that is pricked into the skin using thorns from calamansi or pomelo. This is known as batok and is actually a lot more painful of a method than modern tattooing techniques. She then adapted a signature tattoo in 2017 that consisted of three dots, symbolising herself and her blood-related apprentices and also the next generation in her art.
Every tattoo Whang-Od made told a story. They marked milestones, celebrated victories, and symbolized status in the community. Warriors often had intricate designs that showcased their bravery and accomplishments. Women, too, wore these tattoos as a badge of honor and beauty. The designs were as unique as the individuals wearing them, each carrying a specific meaning:
Filipino tattoos were considered terms of honour in the past, especially for warriors who wore geometric designs and animal emblems that stood for bravery. Moreover, these tattoos had mystical significance and were thought to provide prosperity and protection. Common natural symbols for development and life were the sun and waves. Together, they created a rich legacy of tattoo art in the Philippines that combined nature, spirituality, and power.
In traditional tattoo art from the Philippines, animals are very symbolic and each one stands for a unique quality. For example, the Philippine Eagle, sometimes referred to as the "Haring Ibon" or King of Birds, represents freedom, authority, and the spirit of the Filipino people. The carabao, also known as the water buffalo, represents patience, persistence, and hard work—values that are reflected in Filipino farmers. The Tamaraw, an indigenous animal in the Philippines that represents strength and rarity and reflects the resilient nature of the Filipino people, is another noteworthy figure. The Sarimanok, a legendary bird in Filipino culture, is also connected to good fortune, which makes it a well-liked option for people wishing for luck and wealth.
Nature-inspired tattoo designs in the Philippines have deep symbolic meanings that evoke the natural splendour of the nation. These landscapes, which range from breathtaking coasts to deep woods, are skillfully weaved into tattoos to convey distinct stories. Mountains stand for the path of conquering hurdles and are a sign of strength and resiliency. The bravery to sail through life's continual changes is embodied by ocean waves. Bamboo is a sign of adaptation and flexibility, while the sun is a symbol of vitality and optimism. Including these components in tattoos, people convey experiences and trips while also honouring the landscapes of the Philippines. The goal of traditional tattoo art from the Philippines is to provide narratives via symbolic significance, more than just looking aesthetically pleasing.
As I craft my linocut design, I'm inspired by Filipino tattoo art, aiming to express my identity through symbols. I carve geometric patterns resembling traditional tattoos, symbolizing resilience and self-discovery in my journey. Animal figures like the Philippine Eagle and Carabao represent authority, hard work, and perseverance, shaping my identity.I also include nature symbols—the sun, moon, and waves—symbolizing life's cycles and growth. These elements pay tribute to my cultural heritage and my personal journey. Each stroke of the carving tool adds layers of meaning, reflecting who I am and the values I cherish.Through this artwork, I celebrate my identity, embracing my cultural roots and individual experiences. I hope to inspire others to reflect on their own stories and connections to the world around them.

A Mulawin’s first out of this World Trip
It was a peaceful day in Encantadia. Malaya was stationed in the throne room, guarding their Queen, named Amihan. The Queen was busy writing and signing some paperwork for the improvements of Encantadia since it was about time that they also embrace the modern tech that the generation has created. And it will be more susceptible for future generations to come.
As the Queen continued her work, Malaya sensed something and peeked outside the grand window. Seeing a dark carriage in front of the palace's entrance, the guards who were stationed there were already alert and checking the carriage. One of the guards was about to enter the carriage but was immediately pushed out by an unseen force, making them more warry and unsheathe their weapons.
"Reyna Amihan, forgive me for disturbing you. But, there is a black carriage in front of the palace gates" Malaya reported to her Queen. The Queen stood up and looked out of the grand window, her eyes twinkled knowingly, and smiled.
"Ooh~ I did not expect this. How long has it been since the Ebony carriage appeared here in Encantadia." Queen Amihan said. Malaya's eyes widen in surprise and looked back at the so-called 'Ebony carriage'. "Ebony carriage?! I thought it was just a myth... No wonder.. This carriage is giving me a different vibe." Malaya muttered in disbelief.
"Well, it has been too long since the last Ebony carriage had arrived here in Encantadia. It might have sensed a person here with great potential." She said and looks at Malaya, who just tilted her head in confusion. "Forgive me for my ignorance, Reyna Amihan. But whatever do you mean?" Malaya asked, but Queen Amihan did not answer making Malaya more confused and curious.
"I'll see to it, to what or who the Ebony carriage is looking for." She chuckled walking towards where the Ebony carriage is and Malaya following in suit since it is her duty to protect her Queen from any danger that may come to her.
Lireo Palace - Palace Gates
"Stand down men!" Malaya commanded the guards, their eyes widen as they saw the Queen with her and immediately straightened their posture and saluted Malaya and the Queen. "We give respect to Reyna Amihan and Heneral Malaya!" They greeted, Queen Amihan smiled and nodded and went close to the ebony carriage.
"My, my, this is quite interesting. Who might you be looking for oh Ebony carriage~" She said and patted one of the horses' heads. Malaya, who was still on guard, can't help but hold on to the handle of one of her swords. "Hmm~ I see." Queen Amihan said and looks at Malaya. "Malaya." Queen Amihan called, Malaya immediately went beside her Queen and saluted.
"Yes, my Queen?"
"Congratulations~!!" Queen Amihan cheered as sparkles surrounded her, making Malaya squint at her Majesty's beautiful aura. 'Too.. bright. But it's her Majesty so it is an honor!' Malaya low key simping at her Majesty.
"U-Um yes?" Malaya said unsurely as her Majesty continued to cheer. "Now get in the carriage, Malaya." Queen Amihan said making Malaya flabbergasted at her words. Malaya started sweating in distress and asked her Majesty, "Pardon me, Reyna Amihan but.... Isn't the Ebony carriage a transport to another world?"
"Why yes, not only that, you will be studying magic too~! And you get to meet new friends and explore new places, also because you always look so lonely..." Malaya felt an arrow hit her heart and she awkwardly coughed. "Reyna Amihan... I am honored that the Ebony carriage has chosen me, but-" Malaya was cut off when Queen Amihan looked at her with puppy eyes, she tried looking away but the Queen's puppy eyes were too powerful for her.
"C'mon now Malaya. It might be fun! You might make good memories while your there..." Queen Amihan said as she patted the Mulawin's head. She always thought of Malaya as one of her children, as a mother not only to her own children but to the whole Lireo empire. She wanted what's best for Malaya.
"I-... It is an honor to be chosen by the Ebony carriage, Reyna Amihan." Malaya said and saluted Queen Amihan.
Queen Amihan happily nodded, "Oh before I forget, I want to give you a present." She said, on her palm shined a beautiful magic crystal necklace, a mix of beautiful colors as shown on the crystal. "Reyna Amihan... Are you sure I can take this?" Malaya was still processing and she looked at Queen Amihan.
"Of course, it is for you." Queen Amihan chuckled and puts the necklace on Malaya.
Malaya, who was still speechless but at the same time very happy. It may not show it on her face, but her eyes are already sparkling. "I will do my, Reyna Amihan." She saluted yet again.
Queen Amihan giggled, "Just have fun in school, Anak." She said, and Malaya nodded now entering the carriage.
"Don't worry, they've already packed the things you've needed, Anak." Queen Amihan smiled. The carriage now started moving, Malaya poked her hear out and waved goodbye to Queen Amihan, which she waved back.
And off Malaya goes.
To Twisted Wonderland she go~
No matter what, never let go of my hand
==============================================================================
Some stuff to explain:
-Malaya's magic crystal is like a physical copy of the Mother gem. But the crystal that was given to her will just amplify her magic powers. Since I don't want her to be too much op.
-Malaya has been in wars. Which made her wary of other species.
-She has the ability to control other elements with the blessing of the other magic crystals.
-Malaya looks up to Amihan and the other Queens (Will most likely have a Sebek attitude)
-She's mostly a dandere and a bit of a kuudere
-She is very fluffy
- She can turn human without pulling out her ugat-pak.
Mulawins has a small population, they are basically endangered and are rarely seen.
I made this story cuz it's been stuck in my head for how many months now. And I was a Mulawin and Encantadia fan when I was a kid, so I wanted to have a cross-over. But I will mostly focus on the world Twisted Wonderland.

You can find this story on Qoutev, title “Haring Ibon”
I accept criticism nwn

TRACKLIST: 01 Nubes 02 Lamento
