they remember life before the war-before the founding of the kingdoms. when everything and everyone was ruled by the vampires. 

icarus has never been one to be ruled by one they deem unfit. when time came to ally with the humans and fight back? ari made good use of their skills. not out of any heartfelt devotion to their fellow fae or out of sympathy for the humans-solely because living under vampire rule was...inconvenient. 

when the war was over and the dust settled and the three kingdoms were founded, the maresh family was awarded a noble status for their contributions. a boon-but one that came with far too many responsibilities for ari's taste. after what they experienced under the vampires? they had no interest in ruling.

while icarus is still a lord in name, they have little interests in politics. instead they saw a business opportunity. people needed somewhere to go after the war-somewhere to relax and blow off steam and, most importantly, lose their money.

thus the indigo room was born. built in the less refined section of branholm, it saw all manner of guest and patron walk through their doors. some won big-most lost bigger. 

when the owner of said tavern can peruse your thoughts as easily as most can a book-it tends to skew the odds in favor of the house.

it is a rare few who know that icarus is daemati, a fact that they like to keep close to their chest. centuries of experience under their belt-including a decade or two in a time of war? they are a rather skilled practitioner of the art.

 the ability has come in handy time and time again-largely in ari's side business of smuggling items or people across kingdom borders. guards can hardly report something they cannot remember. ari has used this ability to cross the border himself on several occasions.

they also quite enjoy learning secrets-sifting through the minds of their patrons for any information that they might find useful-or that the highest bidder would pay a king's bounty for.

their business-both legitimate and otherwise-have earned ari a large amount of friends, and an even larger amount of money. they haven't relied on their family for support for centuries, and that suits them just fine.

despite participating little in the political game, ari isn't afraid to use their title as lord to persuade-or intimidate-as the maresh name still holds weight among the nobility.

with the borders opening between kingdoms, ari is about to lose out on a good portion of their business. to compensate, they've sought to make the indigo room a neutral ground of sorts-eager to open its doors to vampire, human, or fae. 

and so long as all obey the rules of the house, all are welcome. but should someone break the rules? well...a daemati has their ways.

It was a tragedy when Iris Rose, beloved Capitol socialite and philanthropist, died in childbirth. But the one silver lining? The child survived. Icarus Rose, the only child of the Rose family and heir to that legacy.

Leander was the perfect father. Oh, the Capitol adored the pictures of Leander carrying Ari on his shoulders or when they would follow after their father when he worked. They were the picture perfect family.

But only when there were pictures to be taken.

Once the cameras stopped rolling and the spotlight was off of them, Leander was scarcely around. Much preferring to spend his time at work and away from the child who served only as the reminder of his deceased wife. Icarus was a child, he didn't understand the back and forth, how their father could adore them one minute and then refuse to even look at them the next.

Most of Ari's life was spent being raised by nannies or growing up around the Ripley household. His aunt never had that cold look in her eyes when she looked at him, and Ari viewed his cousins as something closer to siblings.

It became a cliche as Ari grew older -- grew more defiant as he learned that he could get his father's attention by acting out. Wild parties, rumors of a marriage ruined due to Ari's seducing, drinking, drugs...they had managed quite the list of problems. And that picture perfect image that Leander spent years forming was now threatened, only a few scandals away from crashing and burning.

Ari thought his father was going to disown him. Instead, Leander relented. Maybe it was because Ari looked so much like his mother, maybe he just realized he was punishing his child for something that wasn't his fault and that all of this was just...retaliation -- Ari didn't know. But something in Leander shifted.

It wasn't a complete flip, of course. There was still tension between the two. But Leander took that first step towards fixing things and Ari followed.

They had an eye for fashion, loved to create and design and for the first time? Their father encouraged it. He also, of course, tried to drill some business sense into Ari, and they tried to listen. But they were more skilled at creation.

Ari's rebellious nature was still strong though, in more ways than most realized. It was by chance that they were introduced to a rebel, but their cause wasn't unheard of to Icarus -- rumors were commonplace. But as they explained just what the rebels aimed to do, Ari knew they couldn't sit idly by anymore.

They provide supplies and money to rebels among the lower districts and help to create and solidify new identities for those who are undercover. (Well, naturally this person is Capitol born and raised. They've been a client of theirs for years and here is all the paperwork to prove that fact.)

Things were going well. Ari's designs helped propel the company further and it wasn't long before the Rose Garden was a common name among the Capitol elite.

It wasn't long after that when Atlas Hellthorne sauntered into Icarus's life. He was charming, pretty, powerful -- naturally Icarus fell head over heels in a heartbeat.

And life was good. The family business was booming, they had a pretty face on their arm and a relationship that was the talk of the Capitol, money and power at their fingertips with the company they were set to inherit years from now.

Until years turned into just a manner of months.

They don't know what it was, only that Leander fell sick and no medicine in the Capitol could make it better. He was fading and fast and was now pushing hard to make sure Icarus was ready for the responsibility that would be placed upon them.

After his father died, the title of CEO felt...too heavy on their shoulders. It felt wrong. They weren't their father and those shoes were too big to fill.

But if there is one thing that can motivate Icarus more than anything? It's spite.

And when it was revealed by the Capitol's very own gossip queen that Atlas had seduced Icarus in the hopes of convincing them to sign away their company? It was no surprise that Ari was feeling very spiteful.

It was rather explosive news -- the big breakup. #RoseThorneIsOver. Capitol citizens seemed as heartbroken as if they were the ones in the relationship.

Atlas wanted to use their relationship to steal their company? Icarus would use their breakup to help propel his company further.

Turns out he is very much his father's child as the Rose Garden has blossomed even further under Icarus -- that responsibility that he never wanted ended up being a good look for him.

While he still prefers to spend his time designing, he's proven to have a sharp mind for running the company and a silver tongue to keep bringing in new clients and investors.
