BOUNTY HUNTER 3: EIGHT MEN TO KILL (1972)

Made before the original six Lone Wolf and Cub films were produced, this is film series also starred Tomisaburo Wakayama as a ruthless killer.

This time Wakayama-san portrays Shikoro Ichibei, a doctor who leads as double life as the Shogunate's best bounty hunter. What sets this series apart from others, though, is that Ichibei makes use of a secret room full of gadgets that would make James Bond jealous, as well as various assistants (usually female ninjas) in the field.

Unfortunately, this film marked the series end. The good news, however, is that all the entire trilogy - Killer's Mission, The Fort of Death (both 1969), and Eight Men To Kill - was released on Blu-ray by Radiance Films earlier this year.

Wakayama-san would reprise the role in 1975 in the Bounty Hunter television series.. I saw several of the early episodes, and there were a few subtle changes from the films. For one, Shokoro Ichibei was now a teacher who ran a school when he wasn't collecting bounties.

Second, I believe the time period had been changed from the late Tokugawa Shogunate to either the Meiji Restoration or the early Taisho Period (I have to hunt down those DVDs and watch them again).

I clearly remember, though, the lovely Seiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood) guest starring as one of Ichibei's ninja assistants.
