How do you go about character design? You seem really good at it so I thought asking you would be a good idea

Altho I usually don't think much during my design process. I just spit out a good enough first design with base ideas like "this is a optimistic bat with a star motive" and then draw that thing over and over again until I figure out which elements work and which need to be adjusted. I am loosely aware of basic principles, like shape language and negative space, and I do have some experience from drawing various critters my entire life, but I mostly work on instinct

#I hope this is a sufficient answer since I'm in a weird spot where I'm rather uncertain about my chara design skills #the most recent designs I'm making are prsk au designs and well I do like my work but I struggle to call my decisions clever #there are better ways of portraying certain characters and designs like wof Ena still bother me #I definitely got better over time but directionless trial and error can only take me so far #ig I require some proper studying (like with everything... ough)#ask
