Panic creeps into the edge of your mind, blurring with the overwhelming curiosity that courses through your brain. The hallways are almost always empty, fully equipped departments sit covered in dust, waiting.

The rhythmic sound of your steps brings you little comfort. The echoes fill you with a sense of hollowness; you feel completely alone, but the hair on the back of your neck rises as if being watched. 

You glance up at the black, bulging camera, as you round the corner. There is no as. You are being watched. 

You reach a crossroads of hallways, and you pause, the crude map your department has access to appearing in your mind's eye. It’s 4 minutes to MDR. 8 minutes where you get to see something new. 10 if you’re lucky.

You take the right path, hands squeezing one of the navy wrist rests. It’s perfectly designed to fit with Lumon’s keyboard and trackball, the color matching MDR’s terminals perfectly. 

Deliveries like this aren’t normally done like this. For any other special order item, Admin would step in to help distribute and keep your department safe from the others. And while that’s something you’re eternally grateful for, some itch in your gut had you grabbing the wrist rest and taking to the hallways while Farah’s voice echoed behind you. Her caution is appreciated, but John wouldn’t let anything happen to you. You think. 

You come to a halt, your heartbeat steadily thumping in your ears. This could be part of MDR’s scheme. How they hunt. 

Your nails dig into the squishy gel of a wrist rest. Cold, spiderlike fingers seep down your spine, before twisting around to claw at your stomach.

They want the map in your brain.

They’re going to take your map, eat you, and then hunt down everyone else. The thump in your ears picks up rabbit-fast. They’re all going to destroy each other if they get your map. 

You think of John P. saying your name. Your panic briefly subsides. 

He had called you pretty, and his eyes were a brilliant shade of blue… 

You resume walking, albeit at a much slower pace. Perhaps you could learn from Farah’s caution, even if your trip would be well above 8 minutes. 

The Micro Data Refinement plaque gleams next to the doorway. You lean your head in, surveying the department from afar. Four desks, arranged neatly in the center of the room, with dividers providing a false feeling of privacy.

Each desk is filled, and you squeeze one of the wrist rests. They look big. Big and bloodthirsty, and capable of eating the other departments alive, if they got a head start. 

A head snaps towards you, a pair of bright blue eyes pinning you in place. 

His hair is cropped close, save for a taller line that bisects his skull. He frowns at you, eyes narrowing as he stands. 

“Who are you?” the stranger asks. You blink stupidly, taking a tiny step to properly stand in the doorway, neither in nor out. The stranger raises a brow at you, and you can’t look away, but you can see shapes around him moving.

Maybe they have fangs. You’ve heard of the pouches and the parasites, but maybe they have fangs too. Maybe you’ll go quicker that way as opposed to the gnashing of flat molars. 

You hear your name, tearing you from your thoughts. John P. 

He’s seated at the desk closest to you, chair spun around to face you. He's leaning back in his chair. His legs are spread out in front of him, and there’s a casual air around him. His mouth quirks up at the corners like it had the last time you saw him. 

There’s a thick silence in the air, one that feels impossible to move through. You manage to take a tiny step towards him anyway. 

“You got the wrist rests then?” He asks, gently, as if he can tell you 0.2 seconds away from bolting. You inhale, a company-approved smile painting your face. (Of course, it was obvious you were about to bolt). 

“Yes, John P. The supply order was granted, and I thought I would deliver them.” He heaves himself up from his chair, walking towards you. Your fingers brush as you hand him the wrists rest.

You inhale sharply, but do not move, stuck in place, handing him the 4 wrist rests. He doesn’t seem bothered by it. Instead, he looks at the point of contact in an inquisitive manner. He brushes his finger against yours again, over the same patch of skin.

“Okay,” you say finally, voice high pitched and nervous. as you shove them into his arms. He snorts, and his thumb glides over the gel pad that still has the ghosts of your nail indentations embedded.

“Nervous, are we?” He asks, there’s a glimmer in his eye, one you don’t recognize.

A chill comes over you, and you take a half step back, head tilting slightly. You could probably outrun them, and lose them in the hallways. They should only know about a handful of departments, as opposed to your crude, yet complete, map. 

John straightens slightly, having the insight to adopt a slightly more formal demeanor. “No need to be nervous, this is MDR. You know me, but there’s Kyle G., Simon R., and John M., but we call him Johnny since. Well.” He smiles slightly at you, gesturing toward himself. John tells them your name, and you take a better look at his department. 

There are two you haven’t gotten a good look at. Simon has a medical face mask on, is huge, and looks like he could not care less about your arrival. And Kyle, who looks like maybe the most polite one out of the bunch. Fully capable of tearing you apart with his fangs, but with a kind smile on his face. 

“Be nice boys. She got us wrist rests.” Kyle nods at you politely, and Simon grunts, before they both turn towards their computers again. Johnny eyes you, eyes still narrowed in suspicion. 

“Don’t let them scare you. Promise their bark is worse than their bite,” John teases. 

“Right,” you say slowly, raising a brow at him. The feeling like you’re under examination has evaporated finally, granting you control of your motor functions. 

You gesture awkwardly to your delivery. “If there’s anything wrong with them, let us know, and I’ll see what I can do.” You both know they’ll be perfectly adequate. John nods at you anyway. 

“Will do. You lot don’t normally make these kinds of runs do you?” he gently probes. You chortle a little awkwardly, feeling the fleshy meat of your insides on display. 

“Normally no. But, I figured I should just bring these to you…”

It’s a lame answer that provides no real insight, but John doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, his little smile has grown wider, and it makes you perk up, something warm finally filling the cavity of your chest. You glance at his mouth, the curiosity you felt earlier returning. 

“Will you smile for me? Like with teeth?” John looks a little puzzled, little lines popping up in between his brows, but he complies anyway. Relatively flat, save for the canines. 

“Would you look at that,” you wonder out loud. “No fangs.” You wiggle your eyebrows at him, as his smile takes on something of a confused and genuine quality.

“My, my, my Distribution Supply. You are far from home,” Mr. Graves's voice rings out.

A chill over comes you, and on instinct, you take a step back from John.

Mr. Graves bears his teeth at you in a perfect smile, but the disdain in his eyes is apparent. “And you come bearing gifts. You know Admin handles that so you don’t have to,” he chides. A cold, predatorial aura radiates from him as he stalks closer.

“Yes, Mr. Graves,” you smile at him. MDR, you had never met. But Mr. Graves you know. You’ve danced this dance after each of your errors, learned to appease and flatter, and used the manual to protect yourself.

“MDR placed an order for wrist rests, which admin approved,” you emphasize slightly, watching as the coldness in his eyes intensifies.

“And when we stocked them this morning, I realized these items could be necessary medically to improve efficiency and aid in MDR reaching Lumon’s goals faster." Your mind goes blank as you mentally pull up the correct quote. "And as the handbook says, ‘Toil, as we all know, can be wearisome. A worker may suffer injurious pain-‘“

“’- of ghastly dehumanization, and no workspace is without its perils,” Mr. Graves finishes for you, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Yes, we all know the Compliance Handbook.” He looks at you stonily, still displeased, but knowing this single transgression isn't worth the Break Room. “Remember, these rules are in place for your protection. Please return to Distribution Supply.”

You nod at him but don’t move, turning to look back at John. His expression is guarded, whatever he’s thinking is behind a wall you can’t climb. 

“Now.” Mr Graves says, irritation coloring his voice.

You nod again, darting out of the room, tail tucked between your legs and trying to ignore the sensation of eyes on your back. 

The hallway is still empty. No sounds but that of your footsteps. 

You flex the hand John touched, and in your short life, something akin to want flows through you for the first time.

How do you do your coloring, if you dont mind me asking? Im still learning a lot abt art at the moment

I love asks like this, I just don't know how to answer them properly... I apologize in advance if what I write doesn't make much sense (*´∀｀*) *shy croissant noises*

Well, I'll start with the most basic, I really like to color my characters with several neutral colors and then add 1 or 2 more vibrant colors :3

Here I made a small demonstration of when I color Takahiro✨️

1. Lineart

2. Base colors (I put them as contrast because blue and yellow are the two vibrant colors that draw the most attention)

3. Shadows (I make the shadows either with a very dark shade of red/brown, or dark blue/purple)

4. Then I modify the layer and leave it in "Linear Burn" at 40% opacity

5. Highlights (I usually choose lighter shades of each color)

6. I modify the layer to "Color Dodge" at 80% opacity

7. Now for the gold, I always use these same colors.

8. This part is a bit messier, but it's like this. With the darker tones, I use a layer of "Color Dodge" and "Color Burn" and change the opacity to the one that fits best. For the other two lighter tones, I use layers of "Add", also varying the opacity to see which one looks best.

hello! i have been following you for a while now and i want to tell you that im in love your illustrations and your drawing style! My advice would be to try to find a balance between drawing fun self indulgent things AND all the boring difficult subjects and studies that might be less enjoyable and engaging to do but will help your foundation and painting skills a ton in the long run! For examples i used to pretty much only draw heads in 3/4 angle with a white background when i was starting out bc it was my comfort zone and i was pretty good at it, but i realized i was rlly lacking in all the other aspects like anatomy and backgrounds and lighting and wasn't learning anything new! Always make time to do anatomy, lighting, shading and color thoery studies and if they were too boring for you, try to combine the studies with subjects and characters you like :) personally i'm still lacking in Anatomy but i've been doing some anatomy studies with my favorite characters as the models lately and it's way more fun and motivating.

Another thing is to always look at a ton of art by different skilled artists and analyze and study their work and try to find the purpose behind their color choices and brush strokes, how they stylize features, how they draw some parts of a painting very detailed and leave the rest with minimum rendering to draw the attention to the focal point, etc. Doing this makes you see things with a fresh pair of eyes and you can even spot your own mistakes and correct them instead of repeating them over and over because you don't have any other point of reference other than your own work. I've definitely been there :'D

These are the tips that would've helped me a lot when i started properly painting, i hope they can help you too! Good luck and i hope you have fun drawing❤️

I'm a person of color and lowkey I kind of hate when white people complain about natlan or sumeru skin colors. Like I'm personally at the point where I think yeah, the skin tone *could* be darker sometimes, but im fine with where it's at as long as they dont fall into the "gray-black" thing that a lot of people who dont take the time to learn how to properly shade darker tones do.

The reason I hate when white people complain about it though is because it tends to feel really fetishy really quickly. It's always "oh x character would be so much better if they were darker but hoyo is scared of making them that color" and as someone who is half black and has been called "light skinned monkey" "oreo" or "half-baked n-word" all of these complaints hit this "no entry till this dark" thing in my brain that gives me a huge ick. I'd argue that this is still representation. Not just by skin color, but culturally hoyo hits the rep out of the park.

I dunno, I feel like once we're at the point that dark skin color edits get comments like "omg love the melanin" we are crawling into "Get Out" (the movie) territory iykyk

ahh yes lowkey ive struggled with this a lot. not as much now as in the past tho, and honestly its beecuz ive developed a more neutral view on myself/my art in general. its going to take time to get to this state of mind, so dont be too hard on yourself when you find yourself falling into bad habits.

advice under the cut (kind of long winded) ⬇️⬇️⬇️

the first thing ive done to overcome perfectionism is focus less on details and more about overall shape and form. when i sketch im trying to get roughly what i want, and i limit the strokes i do in certain parts of my sketch to like 1-3 depending on what im drawing (im ngl i also am very impatient and have created a workflow that makes it so i am able to start and finish pieces as fast as possible LOLOLOL. shrugs. i just like drawing fast).

a good example would be this thing i just drew:

in all of my sketches i tend to use as few strokes as possible and just get the basic idea down. good for not overly focusing on teeny tiny details and worrying about them later (i also use the same technique for lineart, but just end up connecting the lines. thats another tip i have, if you like your sketches more than your fully lined pieces, just line the same way you sketch! or you could also use your sketch as your lineart :P)

another tip i have is to draw from references, and once again, focus mostly on shape/form/the big picture of your subject before going into details (do you know how many planes there are on the human face....i still dont know howta draw faces properly but im not mad at myself anymore about it, i just open up a reference and try to learn). i also recommend having a drawing session where the goal is to draw awfully. draw something you want to draw, but that you're not sure if you'll draw it right, and draw it. dont try to correct it, acknowledge that what you made isnt perfect, and then draw something else. you're learning! of course its not gonna be perfect. but inevitably, you're going to get frustrated. just remember if its something you really want to go back to, you will be able to revisit it in the future. feel your anger and frustration, but do your best to not direct it inward.

small side tangent about shading- I AM SO SHIT AT SHADING SKFHSAFDJHS. people dont tend to notice (surprising), since ig my shading style is considered "beautiful" or something, but if you looked at it on a technical level, there are mistakes everywhere. i havent really tried to improve it. i dont really care most of the time b/c i just like shading for fun. and especially when im shading my sketches, i already have it in my mind that its not supposed to be perfect. its a sketch. this is where im supposed to make all of my mistakes. once i start making my way to the final product is when i start worrying more about if i did the lighting correctly (even then ik im not good at it im not trying to be a god im just trying to draw things that make me happy).

additionally, i really rec u dont try and fudge a sketch until its better if you're deep in a Perfectionist moment. keep the old sketch and start over on a new sketch taking bits and pieces you liked from the original, and improving on those that you dont (shitty thumbnails are also good if you have a vague idea in mind but need ta figure out howta place subjects in your scene). honestly drawing the same thing/idea over and over gets me a better understanding of my subject each time, so naturally each iteration looks better. it doesnt take me that long to sketch tho, so if sketching takes you forever (sometimes if sketching takes you forever its b/c you're a perfectionist skjfskdjf) just think about how much time you're willing to spend on something. remember☝️ its okay to give up/take a break on something and try again later. sometimes you just needta stop looking at your art and like. look at a tree or something lmfao.

i will also say that im not looking to go into a career in art, im more of a hobbyist. ik school environments dont exactly.....help with perfectionism lol. there are certain expectations put on people who go into the art field that are inescapable. if this is the case for you, i still think what ive discussed before can help you, but i also think that you may need to lean more on the mental tips i have also provided below.

alright! mental health tips in regard to art:

so, i have c-ptsd, and with that comes a lot of self image issues that ive had to work on. my feelings about myself extended to the way i felt about my art. it was shit, it was awful, i cant draw like this other person can so why bother, if its not perfect i shouldnt draw at all, etc. and honestly, something thats helped is affirmations. my affirmations are c-ptsd related, but ive noticed a shift in the way i view myself, and by extent, my art since ive started repeating them to myself daily. and honestly, i think a requirement of overcoming perfectionism is telling yourself that your art doesnt hafta be perfect, A LOT. LOL. LIKE YOU ACTUALLY HAFTA ACTIVELY TELL YOURSELF YOU'RE NOT AWFUL LMAOOOO. its funny, we dont think much about how we naturally are self critical about ourselves, and we dont realize that we are basically repeating negative affirmations about ourselves over and over and thats why we're not improving (mentally).

even when you're not drawing, i think it would benefit some people to have some kind of notification on their phone to remind them to tell themselves that their art doesnt hafta be perfect daily/however often you feel you might need it. and then with that affirmation, practice Shitty Drawing. one of the best tips ive ever gotten for this was from one of my friends monnie. get out your sketchbook or some printer paper, take out a shitty pen, and DRAW. and then any mistakes you make are permanent and you cant just endlessly try and fix them. it forces you ta sit with this uncomfortable feeling that something you made isnt perfect. eventually your brain will realize that when your art isnt perfect, you can still draw and you're ALLOWED to continue to draw even if what you make isnt spectacular. if you dont want to repeat an affirmation daily, try to remember to at least repeat it before you sit down to draw. something along the lines of "my art doesnt hafta be perfect in order for me to want to draw. im allowed to draw even if its not perfect" or something else. it depends on what you most struggle with in regards to your perfectionism. im ngl its probably going to feel cringe at first, but i promise you, it really works if you put it into practice longterm.

shoot for neutrality instead of positivity first. let me tell you thats where i am now and its so much less exhausting drawing lmfaooo. i make something that looks like shit and im just like. i dont fucking careee i dont give a fuccckkkkk

Sokka immediately jumped off, almost kissing the sand in relief, and Aang followed close behind. Katara moved to stand up and join them, but a combination of that nerve-sick feeling and a bit of light-headedness had her slipping a little, stumbling off the saddle. She would’ve landed face-first in the sand, but Aang smoothly caught her with a current of air, then offered a hand. 

Once she was safe on the ground, Katara blushed, embarrassed that she’d lost her balance that easily. She moved to tell Aang, only to have Sokka take one look at her and burst out laughing. 

“What?!” She snapped, suddenly overly self-conscious.

“Your hair!” He cackled, a shaking finger pointing at her. Confused, Katara reached out her hand to draw a tendril of water from the cold morning sea. She concentrated, forming it first into a sphere and then a flat oval, then stilled the water so that she could see her reflection…

Only to drop the water in surprise when she finally saw what Sokka was talking about. Her carefully done hair was snarled around in its braids,  bits of it loose and bits of it still intact. She huffed in annoyance, then fished out a small glass mirror and her hairbrush. 

“Aang,” she said distractedly, “could you hold this for me?” She handed him the mirror. 

“Y-yeah, no problem.”

She tugged out her hair ties, flipping her head upside down for a moment to make sure that it had all gotten loose, then she gingerly tugged a few tendrils of water from the nearby ocean and wrapped tiny streams around her hair, tugging out the crimped braid pattern and reviving her curls. Then, she carefully bent the remaining liquid back out. 

She couldn’t see his face through her thick hair as she stood back up, but from his voice, Aang seemed impressed. “I get that you haven’t been able to learn any big combat moves, but for someone whose bending is self- taught, you sure have a pretty good handle on these smaller things.”

She properly flipped her head up now, curls and waves bouncing around her face. Her dark brown locks shone with honey-toned highlights, all different shades of caramel and chocolate sparkling as they framed her face. She reached up, gently twisting and clipping a few strands out of the way, but a few wayward pieces still fell forward, gently brushing against soft, full lips and smooth skin. Aang awkwardly froze for a moment, caught off guard by how different she looked when her hair was loose and free. He had a weird urge to tell her so, but bit his tongue, instead focusing on her answer.

What's been your favorite place, or setting, to draw and depict in The Heart of A Monster?

now i think im known for not bneing able to answer things in a simple way. especially when i'm asked for favourites. picking jsut one would be unfair and untrue.

my boring answer is.,. all of them!?

it was a very nice challenge and learning experience, especially the places that I had trouble with. I can pick out somehting positive for every single one of them..

some noteworthy milestone type stuff:

Issue 4 was the first time i heavily referenced and actually used the sonic unleashed game to explore areas to really get some details in for the hub world location they visited! that process was super fun but ultimately ended up in me making too detailed backgrounds. Still a very important formative learning experience :3

I'm proud of the desert areas in issue 5. i think you can actually see how on page 15 it just CLICKED and i figured out how to use color in that setting, how to properly use the colros for shade and sunlight!

I'm also really happy with the depiction of arabic culture in that issue. I got a lot of comments from arabic readers thanking me for depicting their culture properly and making them feel represented. (especially the fact people have communal meals on carpets on the floor; as it is almost never represented at all in popular media)

the icy areas and areas in the ARK in issue 7 were a huge experimentation and ended up being so fun that i drew ALMOST 30 comic pages in 2 weeks. that issue was also the first time i actually did environment concept art beforehand instead of making the environment up as i go (yeah i usually just come up with the location the very moment i draw the final page LMAO i neeeed to stop doing that hoyl shit)

i had a lot of fun making up the chaotix office at the end of issue 8 too :3 built it in the sims for reference lol

im generally really bad at interiors, ESPECIALLY sleek sci-fi stuff. i think it really shows in issue 8 with the big disparity between outside and interior backgrounds. (honestly those pages are super embarassing to me but... the show must go on!) eggman-land is a very special challenge that I welcome :] having lots of fun actually! comparing my eggman base art to the art i made in issue 1 definitely makes me hopeful for the future.

No! No actually!! I was One guy!! In multiple bodies! Thats what a HIVEMIND is!! It wasnt talking to other people, it was being able to talk to yourself outloud PROPERLY. I was still just One Guy!! Its why I was so okay with shutting down the other bodies! I didnt lose anything! Just got a pile of very expensive wood and metal!

I know literally nobody else ever wants to read it like that because they think treating the segments like a big family (or shipping fuel. Weird.) Is soooo much more appealing but Im SICK OF IT. Im sick of feeling like I have to ignore that I was ONE GUY controlling many bodies because of the whole "oh I knew multiple mes in source so obvi Im cool with doubles lol" thing. (This is not to say anyone has pressured me over this. Its all in my own head.)

Also actually while Im here complaining about the segments.

Low key this is embarrassing but I never learned a lot of normal people things. What sunblock do you use? How often is often enough to apply? How much SPF is good? Someone the other day told me I was supposed to wear it inside too and I can't tell if they were teasing me.

Is the sun really trying that hard to kill us? How tf did we even adapt to survive this long?

Im sorry this got LONG but I am giving you the info

Ok so I personally use soltan, its reasonably priced and broad spectrum. Whats best for you may depend where you are, be CAREFUL if you live in the US as many sunscreens lack broad spectrum protection or proper indicators to tell you if it has proper broad spectrum protection. At least last I checked it does not appear to be standardised like it is in other countries. (Someone pls let me know if this has changed or if there are any individual states that regulate this better)

You should reapply every 2-3 hours i think and after getting out of water if you go swimming. Yes its a lot. If you *have* to cheat, avoid direct sun, reduce how much you expose your skin. Also use mineral sunscreen if you are wearing makeup. Also grab yourself UV sunglasses and a big hat.

Aim for 50 spf AND 5 starts/whatever other indicators are relevant to where you live. Spf is sun protection factor, or in simple terms "how much extra time do I have before I burn". Stars are an indicator of how much UVA and UVB is absorbed in comparison with each other. This is important because not all sun damage is visible. If its got 5 stars you know that if you are applying sunscreen properly to avoid sunburn, that same level of protection applies to the unseen damage too.

Yes you should wear sunscreen indoors, and also year round. I understand this is quite demanding so again if you need to cheat: cover up in cooler weather, denim will block everything guaranteed. Do not be fooled by the season, if the sun is there it can still get you. When indoors, be mindful of how much sunlight is in your house and where you spend your time. If you want to spend a whole day lounging with the curtains open, consider doing it away from windows that get direct sunlight. Also consider your window coverings (also if its hot you may want to keep blinds and curtains closed anyway to reduce the heat indoors, so 2 birds one stone). If you are truly paranoid and also lazy like me, get yourself a sun lamp and never open your curtains 😂. But just closing curtain on the side the sun is on can do a lot to reduce how much sun is getting indoors. And again proper clothing can help you indoors.

If you wanna be super duper cheaty you can keep an eye on the UV index and also avoid peak sunshine between 10 am and 4 pm. Heres what the UV index can tell you:

Low, 0-2: At the low stage, experts advise you to wear sunglasses if the sun is bright. Use sunscreen and protective clothing if you burn easily.

Moderate, 3-5: At the moderate stage, you should cover up and use sunscreen. Avoid direct sunlight at midday, when the sun is most powerful. Stay in the shade.

High, 6-7: At the high stage, you should use all protection against sun damage (protective clothing, wearing a hat and sunglasses, using sunscreen). Limit time in the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Very high, 8-10: At the very high stage, you should be extra careful, using clothing, hats, sunscreen and sunglasses. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Your skin can burn quickly at this stage.

Extreme, 11+: At the extreme stage, you should use all methods of prevention. It will only take minutes of exposure to result in a burn. Don’t go out in the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wear protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. At this stage and all others, remember that snow, sand and water all increase UV exposure by reflecting the sun’s rays."

The sun IS a deadly lazer and the only reason we have survived as a species is because we only need to live long enough to reproduce and you can get that done before the skin cancer gets you. Its cumulative damage, so being lazy from time to time and cutting corners won't kill you on its own, but do it enough and it might catch up to you eventually, if you cut enough corners and live long enough. (And you don't have to be terribly old, the peak age is 85-89 but rates go up sharply at 20-24.)

But ANOTHER thing you can do to protect yourself is check your skin and learn the signs of skin cancer. Early detection is KEY and makes it very survivable (close to 100%!), especially for dark skinned people who tend to have lower rates of survival due to later detection! There is basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. The last is the most dangerous, accounting for 75% of skin cancer deaths and is caused by sun burn type damage.
