One thing I really wish about crow rook, would them just refusing to admit that their training was basically torture.

In casual conversation dropping about how viago broke their hand once during training, and how much of a bitch it was to heal, but immediately defending it because they've never forgotten to keep their hands protected in a fight.

Or maybe they do know it was torture. Maybe they know it was abuse and not something that should have been done to a child, but if they think about that they would have to reconstruct the idea of Viago in their mind. Viago the man who saved them, the man who trained them, the man who also tortured them. I think an internal struggle of 'but that torture kept me alive. I'm only breathing because of my lessons paid in my own blood' would have done so much for the crows

And maybe they see it reflected in Lucanis's stories. And hearing about Caterina and Lucanis, they can't reason it away with sentimentally. Maybe they try to. Lucanis survived a year of torture. Was that because of Caterina? Or because of Lucanis's own spirit?

Idk, I think crow rook could have been an interesting story about the crows. Because in other back stories, it makes sense that the crows would try to boast about freedom and how they defend their city. Make themselves look good to their new allies. But crow rook would have known about the blood underneath, and the bruises and the welts and the cuts. And maybe they can't forgive Viago - maybe they can. Maybe they have to, because if they don't then they lose their only family. Maybe they know Viago only wanted them to survive. Maybe they don't know if that makes it better or worse.

Sorry forever mourning that the crows aren't actually morally gray it could have been such a neat story about their internal abuse and how the system itself works. The only previous crow companion we had talks about how bad his torture was; a blood bath, a survival of the fittest. When asked about their training, crow rook can reply 'it was torture'. I wish there was some idk depth to it? It's implied that house de Riva does training differently from house arianai, which makes sense as clearly that did NOT work out for house arianai. However rook was personally trained by Viago (from what I understand. Talking to Heir at the casino reveals that rook never trained with her, and also received the best training they could. Probably training from the talon himself). That couldn't have been easy training.

Yet even through all that, it's clear Viago does care about them! Any other crow would be dead if they went rogue on a job like rook did, yet Viago only sends them away.

I don't remember where I was going with this but. I think Rook de Riva should be allowed some complicated emotions about their training and viago. As a treat

Great. More pity. Just what you needed.

But then he continued.

Question about deathbed: i havent seen much about it yet but what ive seen doesnt make it sound very...fun to be alive in that world and that its like influenced by practices of the christian church during the middle ages and stuff like that, so im wondering how that would affect being able to even really play a woman being badass in that game?

Is it basically hardmode difficulty if you wanna play a woman?

I have two answers to this.

First is that in Death Bed, a woman can be badass. I’ll demonstrate by making Herr Rike, an old literary and AD&D character of mine, in Death Bed. @thepleasuregoblin @ashweather and @umbraldame can attest that she is just about the most believably badass person there is. (Despite the title of “Herr,” she is a woman and always has been. Well she’s female, technically she isn’t human and in her setting “woman” is a human-specific term while other sapient species have their own terms for genders but you get the point.)

I’m not gonna go through this very granularly because in Death Bed most stats are rolled, start out very low, and then are upgraded one at a time by level-ups. But over the course of building her stats up to where they should be to represent her I would focus on Agility, Scripture, Dexterity, Vigor, Strength, Endurance, Arcane, and Attunement from highest to lowest in that order.

For Traits, I would get her

(this is a men-only Trait, and also one I will probably nerf before final release, but a female character can still take it, at a price.)

I might also consider giving her Gentleman (Men only.) but at the moment in the game’s unfinished state that Trait has an unclear interaction with Lady.

Yes, she does have both men-only and women-only Traits, that’s allowed, it just reduces her Social Status. I rolled it and at the end of all those Traits she still has a Social Status of 27, which is fairly high.

Social Status is a stat representing how respectable the character is by the standards of 1400s society. It determines who gets to talk down to and degrade who. What the higher Social Status character says goes, and if this pecking order is challenged, that tends to distress people.

Characters who have Traits which fall outside their perceived gender suffer a debuff to Social Status, because that’s just how it was back then. Hell, that’s how it is today.

So she could kill monsters and shit with a sword just fine, the worst she would get is maybe the occasional weird look, especially since, in the Middle Ages, it was irregular but not strictly forbidden for women to practice martial arts. The super strict sex-segregation of martial arts was way more of a Renaissance and onward thing.

Now for the second answer.

A lot of what our cultural idea of what is “cool” and “badass” is extremely masculine-favoring. And while yes, swords and armor and violence are cool and badass, (I’m not immune to thinking that the things knights do is cooler than the things their wives do.) a lot of “feminist” or “egalitarian” or otherwise “pro-women” media that is historically set ends up having the message “This woman is badass and cool because she’s.. like a man, unlike those other lameass women who are like women.”

It ends up being the medieval version of that action movie trope that goes like

Male Lead: (pleasantly surprised) “You know how to fight and be badass?”

Female Lead: *racks shotgun* “I grew up with 7 brothers and so I had to learn how to play rough and played army instead of Barbie dolls and I didn’t have a mother and my ex-special-forces dad taught me how to fight starting at a young age. All that masculinity helped me grow up to be cool and tough woman instead of a boring helpless stupid woman.”

instead of, like, celebrating the other 99% of women in that time period who just did woman stuff.

Death Bed allows you to make a character that is a woman but effectively fills the social roles of a man such as killing stuff with a sword*(which is something just about every other TTRPG on the planet also allows), and it allows you to make a character that is a woman and fills all the more normal social roles of a woman while still being a very valuable asset to the party both in and out of combat (and Death Bed has a lot of “out of combat” stuff going on. It’s a classic dungeon crawler, which involves a good amount of combat, but is not purely combat and a party needs plenty of characters who are focused on other things if they want to survive.)

*and again, this wasn’t even something women were strictly barred from doing at the time.

Fencing Master: (Men only. +1 Social Status.) This struggler has +1 Scripture, +1 Strength, +1 Dexterity, and +1 Agility. Additionally, upon gaining this Trait, give him any three Weapon Special Attribute Masteries, selected at random from those he does not already have. Additionally, reduce his Hollowness by 1 each time he gains a new Special Weapon Attribute Mastery. However, this struggler must make a Despair roll any time his martial technique is called into question or disrespected, unless he proves himself. If he attempts to prove himself and fails, he must take an added instance of disadvantage to this Despair roll. He must also make a Despair roll each time his weapon is reduced in Maintenance Rating as a result of a failed attack roll. 

Additionally, this struggler gains 2x the EXP from engagements in which he fights alone without allies. 

Frightening Demeanor: (+1 Social Status.) So long as this struggler is not a non-combatant, apply a -1 to this struggler’s Attention each time their Attention is increased. However, apply an added instance of disadvantage to their reaction rolls. 

Humble: (+0 Social Status.) This struggler’s good nature is a bulwark to disrespect. They gain an added instance of Advantage to any despair rolls related to disrespect. They gain an additional added instance of advantage to any despair roll related to disrespect from characters of lower Social Status. 

Lady: (Women only. +3 Social Status.) This struggler has an added +3 to Scripture,[1] and an instance of advantage on reaction rolls. However, she must take an added instance of disadvantage to any Despair roll resulting from being disrespected by a man or woman of lower social standing, and must make a Despair roll up to once per Scene in which she is not wearing fine women’s clothing.[2][3]

[1. Sidebar] Literacy was considered the domain of noblewomen, clergy, and scribes.

[2. Sidebar] This Trait does not require the struggler to be a non-combatant. Though it was unorthodox for them to participate directly in battle, women of noble standing were not barred from martial training. In fact, a nobleman’s wife was expected to command his levies in battle should their home be attacked while he is away.

[3. Sidebar] Wearing fine women’s clothing does not preclude the wearing of most armor, so long as the visibly feminine elements are preserved.

Additionally, up to once per Scene, this struggler gains 100 EXP if she goes the entire Scene without getting her shoes or dress muddy, wet, or otherwise dirty. [gains EXP from reading literature or eating fine food and drinking fine wine? Figure this out.]

Paranoid: (-1 Social Status.) This struggler has an added instance of advantage to Agility rolls to avoid triggered traps, and, once per Hourglass, the player of this struggler can ask that the Narrator reveal to their struggler any and all traps in a room or general surrounding area and the Narrator will do so. However, they must make a Despair roll if they ever accidentally trigger a trap, or if anyone ever startles them such as by walking up behind them or waking them from their sleep.

Also, when the Narrator makes a wandering monster roll, the player of this struggler may ask that the result be revealed to them, but if they do so, this struggler makes a Despair roll.

Up to once per Scene, this struggler gains 10 EXP for being right about the dangers that lurk nearby.

Sharp Tongue: (+0 Social Status.) This struggler’s quick tongue and quicker wit allow them to wind around any social slight with the agility of a skilled fencer. At this struggler’s choice, they can cause the object of their ridicule either an added instance of advantage or an added instance of disadvantage to any Despair rolls related to disrespect from this struggler. Either advantage or disadvantage is doubled if their words are actually said in dialogue or at least summarized and the Narrator deems their remark sufficiently clever.

Tactician: (+1 Social Status.) Once per engagement, this struggler can bark out a specific order to an ally with a Social Status up to 3 degrees higher than their own, or any degree lower.[1] If the ally they are ordering complies, that ally gains an instance of Advantage to the next 3 rolls that carrying out that order may entail. However, if the ally refuses or fails to carry out this order, then this struggler must make a Despair roll. If the ally dies as a result of attempting to carry out this order, then this struggler must make a Despair roll with an instance of Disadvantage.

To say the day started out strange would be an understatement. You were well-liked on the team, sure, you considered everyone to be your friend, but did you think that it was that level of friendship where they would drop dead for you? Not really.

So, when you walked into the office to find not one, but two different things on your desk that were definitely not there last night, you were thoroughly surprised.

The first thing that caught your eye, naturally, was the steaming to-go cup of coffee from your favorite cafe. You checked the label, and yup, it was your favorite — butter pecan latte.

Thought you could use a boost - S

You clutched a hand to your chest, searching the bullpen for the boy genius but coming up short. You'd thank him later.

The next thing that caught your eye was the paperwork that you had not completed last night. It had been a beast of a task, a stack you'd planned to tackle with bleary eyes this morning. But it was no longer blank. Every line and box had been meticulously filled out, albeit in handwriting that looked more like chicken scratch than anything else. 

A standard yellow sticky note sat on top.

You stared at the paper, mouth slightly open as you tried to wrap your head around the sudden wave of generosity. Hotch? Spencer? This was suspicious. Very suspicious.

The very precious world as you knew it had to be ending. And to further prove that theory, the rest of the day pretty much unfolded the same.

"God, it's freezing in here," you mutter to JJ, leaning into the conference table as you wrap your arms around yourself.

JJ gave you a sympathetic smile, but before you could respond, you felt movement behind you.

"Here," Spencer offered softly, draping his cardigan toward you.

You blinked up at him in surprise, but before you could take it, Hotch's black suit jacket was already being settled over your shoulders. He muttered something about it being warmer, giving Spencer a pointed look before returning to his place at the head of the room. 

Spencer froze, his outstretched cardigan still dangling in his band, his brows furrowing slightly in disbelief. JJ's lips twitched as she leaned over to whisper. "Are we... interrupting something?"

You shot her a glare, cheeks warm as you tugged the jacket tighter around your shoulders.

Later, you found yourself hunched over your desk; nose practically pressed against the screen as you tried to decipher a particularly dense report. It was the kind of document that tended to make your brain feel like soup. Your concentration was hanging on by a microscopic thread when Spencer's voice broke through your thoughts.

"You're going to strain your eyes like that," he said, holding out a pair of blue-light glasses you swore he had just pulled from thin air. "Here, these should help filter the light from the screen."

You blinked at him, surprised. "Uh, thanks, Spence."

He grinned, leaning casually against the corner of your desk like he didn't have the entire bullpen watching him. "It's actually proven that prolonged screen exposure can lead to significant digital eye strain. In fact, did you know —"

"Reid," Hotch interrupted, voice cutting through the air as he emerged out of nowhere, holding some sort of ergonomic chair cushion. He looked to you. "Your posture isn't great either."

You blinked, again, looking at Hotch, who somehow looked calm and cool while holding a memory foam cushion like it was some sort of tactical device. 

Your posture wasn't great? How were you supposed to take that.

"Try this," Hotch continued, placing the cushion behind you in your chair before you could argue. "It'll help your back."

Spencer shot Hotch a look that bordered on indignant. "Right. Because back pain is so much worse than irreversible eye strain," he muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets.

"Um, well, I appreciate both of you," you said, cheeks heating as you glanced between the two. Their behavior was getting harder and harder to ignore, and if you didn't know better, you'd think they were competing.

The rest of the bullpen had noticed too. How could they not? Prentiss gave you an exaggerated look from her desk, her eyebrows wiggling in silent commentary. You bit back a smile and tried to focus, though the two men clearly had other plans.

Lunch was no better.

The team scattered around the table in the break room, half-heartedly picking at salads, sandwiches, and takeout. You were mid-sentence, recounting a mildly funny story to the group about your night last night, when Hotch handed you a carefully packed container.

"Eat," he instructed. "You skipped breakfast."

The words might have sounded bossy, he kind of always bossy, but he said in such a concern, gentle tone that you felt like you should've been the one concerned. You stared back down at the meal — an elaborate chicken pesto wrap — wondering when he'd even had the time to notice let alone get this.

"Wow," you teased, moving your gaze to him. "Do you just... carry emergency food for everyone, or am I special?"

You hadn't meant it as a challenge, but apparently Spencer took it as one.

"Actually," he piped up, slide a piece of dark chocolate onto the table in front of you, "this had flavonoids that improve brain function."

"So I'm getting the VIP treatment today, huh?"

"Seems like it," Prentiss muttered into her coffee.

"Food for energy is practical," Hotch defended.

"And so is cognitive stimulation."

You felt a laugh bubbling up. They were serious. Hotch and Reid — two of the most brilliant minds you'd ever met —were locked in some unspoken,  schoolboy-esque competition. 

It escalated even further (you didn't think that was possible) later in the bullpen.

It started out simple: Reid was showing off his eidetic memory (as always) by reciting a list of obscure psychological terms. His voice was quick, words flowing almost like water, and you had to admit it was impressive. You'd barely had time to compliment him when Hotch walked by, dropping a thick binder onto your desk.

"Your report. Already printed and formatted."

"Are you serious?" you asked, flipping through the neatly organized pages. "I was planning on staying late to finish this."

"No need."

Reid, not to be outdone, stood straighter. "Oh, well, if you have time now," he stated, already grabbing a deck of flashcards from a drawer in his desk. "I could help quiz you on behavioral patterns. Might be helpful."

You couldn't even help it — you laughed.

They froze, both of them looking slightly off guard, like they weren't expecting that reaction. You shook your head, attempting to contain yourself as you gestured to the two of them.

"Okay, seriously. What is happening today?" You were still grinning. "Did you two make some kind of bet? Or is this just... you being competitive for fun?"

Hotch cleared his throat, straightening his tie. "I don't know what you mean."

Reid shoved his hands in his pockets, but his ears were bright red. "Me neither."

You leaned back in your chair, crossing your arms as you regarded them both. You let the silence linger for a moment longer, their baffled expressions only fueling the grin tugging at your lips. Slowly, you stood from your chair and approached them.

Both Hotch and Reid seemed rooted in place, caught off guard as you closed the distance between you all. You leaned in just a little, tilting your head so only they could hear you clearly.

"Listen, boys. There's no need to fight over me." you said, looking Spencer square in the eye before turning to Hotch. "I'm open to the idea of being shared."

Before either man could recover enough to reply, you spun on your heel and headed towards the break room, leaving them standing there like statues. Behind you, Hotch cleared his throat while Reid, still bright red, muttered something about needing to find more flashcards.

their clique —

bakugou, kirishima, sero, denki, mina & occasionally you, are the popular kids. they get a bad rep because of a very loud and obnoxious boy named katsuki but they've all been unseperable since litterally elementary ( except for that one time kirshima and denki were fighting over mina in like middle school lol ).

the 5 of them are a group but they're always favorites, katsuki prefers eijirou and vice versa, sero prefers denki and vice versa, mina prefers herself and vice versa.

their bond —

mina started to feel less alone now that you're ( kinda ) hanging out with them, ( she invites you to everything, you show up sometimes ) bakugou and kirishima are the student-athletes of the group, ( mostly katsuki, kirishima just can't let himself fall behind ) which leaves denki and sero to be the goofy slightly depressed pair with grades aizawa gave up on trying to restore.

mina is closer with kiri and bakugou, she lives right next to them and so they see each other more often. she used to think after eijirou stopped liking her bakugou started, (she thinks they almost kissed once) but she'd never talked about it and so neither did he.

bakugo is scary, nonchalant, girl repellent up to his seinor year, kirishima fakes nonchalance for all of 30 seconds then decides he actually doesn't care. out of the entire friend group he's had the most partners, denki blames it on the fact hes a fb player, mina brings up the fact katsuki is also a fb player, denki brings up the fact that well, it's katsuki.

denki is highkey the worst influence ever, sero stopped running track because of him, got him into drugs a little, lowkey possessive over their friendship. sero thinks he's fine, has slight fomo whenever denki hogs him from his other friends but can't resist the attention he gets.

smoking buddies who smoke often, sero says he wouldn't ingest anything that doesn't come from the earth, denki is a vape demooonn. im talking acid to adderoll, doesnt matter what it is, long as it can get him high he'll take it. (yes, he is crossfaded constantly, yes his brain is melted beyond oblivion)

the 4 of them ( not even sero ) are completely aware of how bad his addiction is. kirishima lowk suspects something but doesn't have the courage to say anything. ( coward )

mina is social butterfly, instagram queen. knows everyone and everything, everyone and everything knows her ( side note: her favorite person to gossip with is actually katsuki, you'd be surprised on how messy he can be ) she was the first to loose her virginity, also the therapist of the group. ( it's a full time job with them )

told her girls first ( tsu, jirou w/ details ) they freaked when they found out who it was, told katsuki, kirishima, sero, denki in that order ( no details ). kaminari and hanta clapped and whistled, offered weed to celebrate. eijirou nodded in approval, katsuki shrugged. he didn't expect todoroki of all people to be the person yet somehow it wasn't so surprising.

when they were in their junior year of highschool, things got really bad and people started calling them "fallout 5". it of course was nothing like that, denks overdosed on purpose, ( twice in that same year ) lived, then said he hated all of them. bakugou got an injury that put him out of the season forever. sero and kat had his huge fight which left mina to pick a side, kirishima had to move away temporarily but when he came back he didn't come back alone.

their plans —

things were restored senior year! ( took a long healing process for all of them, made them closer ) katsuki wants to be a professional athelete or maybe a lawyer, he hasn't completely decided yet. kiri wants to be doctor, it was kind of unexpected, everyone thought he'd go pro like bakugou. sero wants to be a dj, tells everyone he's going into finace tho. denki wants to be a stay at home dad, but in the meanwhile tries to look for jobs that have anything related to electrical fixing. ( fun fact, he used to be really good at math before he stopped practicing )

when kirshima came out as bi to his friends no one batted an eye. and i quote "girl we been knew that." — mina ashido, the dairy queen drive through.

denki's attempt is what prompted kirishimas major, ( his family is huge and all of them live till 109, he's never had a close relative in his family die or almost die untill now )

while waiting for your food as a joke you say "god i'm so hungry i could eat an izuku midoriya" and because katsuki is a grandpa he completely falls for the bait and makes this huge scene about how you know him ( you've never met him a day in your life, you just stalked a few pages and asked a few people (mina))

Fabric overview: Neoprene scuba

next up on my favorite fabrics is neoprene scuba! This is a newer fabric to me but once i started using it, i couldnt stop haha.

neoprene scuba is a polyester double knit fabric with a sponge-spacer in between that can vary in size from barely noticeable to 3mm or more. its sometimes referred to as spacer fabric as a result. the term "scuba" can be thrown around a lot, but it typically refers to a thick, double knit poly fabric. It will usually have stretch via the knit weave. (this is something to watch out for, consistency in labeling is worth making note of)

I love neoprene scuba for its ability to hold smooth, defined forms. the thickness is great for smoothing, and the spongey layer gives it a good, shapely body structure. plus the double knit weave creates a soft finish. because of these properties, its my #1 go to for cartoony costumes.

neoprene scuba is also great for bodysuits and form-fitting things as well due to its smoothing properties. I like it a lot for boot covers.

Typically the two main things i use scuba for are bodysuits and capes. Capes for the shape, bodysuits for the smoothing. also it doesnt fray much so I have on occasion left edges raw!

Things to watch out for: 1) as was alluded to, its not easy to shop for. because of the variation in sponge thickness, if youre buying online its not easy to tell if youre getting a thinner, standard double knit or a true spacer scuba. also the terms can be hard to track from neoprene, scuba, spacer, bonded wetsuit fabric, etc. it takes some footwork to find the right fabric. 2) by nature, its a stretch fabric and its not easy to make...unstretchy. this stretch can pose challenges for draping, especially on capes. 3) its heavy and its itchy. no surprise that twice the layers of fabric mean that it can get heavy fast, and the sponge layer is made of little polyester pokers that can irritate the hell out of skin. lining a bodysuit or finishing internal seams is a must. 4) neoprene isnt easy to top stitch. its like trying to top stitch marshmallow. i havent been able to top stitch neoprene in a way that doesnt create a rounded bump effect (which hey, you might even want depending on the application). 5) its a thick heavy fabric, so its another needlesnapper when sewing. also because the dual layers, pressing seams is not always easy. 6) sometimes it has a waterproof finish that makes paining hard, ive also had the sponge layer *literally* suck paint up when trying to airbrush it. (again, think about how applying watery paint to a sponge would go)

despite the downsides, its a fast favorite of mine. what it can do well, it does *so* well. its a special fabric thats akin to sewing with a thin layer of plush marshmallow (as as mentioned...pros and cons to that)

I get my neoprene fabric from big Z mostly, but its also offered at fabric wholesale direct and spandex world. jo anns also has some fascinating scuba suedes that im a big fan of as well. it has a price point between 9-20$ a yard.
