Hennepin Hundred- 22:13:41. 8 hour 13 min PR 😉 27th of 175 finishers.
A few days have past. Some initial thoughts but for now I'll start by saying this race really exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Ornery Mule Racing knows exactly what they're doing. Look, I still hate that Headlands DNF but without it I never would have run this great race. Lemons into the lemonade.
Race Strategy- From the first mile I incorporated a run/walk strategy. With such a flat course, only around 800 ft of gain, I thought too much running would equal trashed legs late in the race. Well, my legs were still trashed but maybe a little less so due to the run/walk plan. I really think it paid off and got me that sub 24. I actually liked it even in those early miles when people were passing me like crazy. I started 4/1:15. Then I gradually reduced the run time and increased the walk time throughout the race. Probably around mile 80 I settled on a 2/2:15. That 2 was more like a shuffle but it was still faster than a walk. I will definitely do this again.
The Course- For me the surprise of the race. I had heard the term monotonous used a few times but looking back I disagree. Sure it was straight, flat, and looked the same but it really kept me engaged. Bridges, tunnels, water, trees, some wildlife. I actually really liked it.
Low point- Probably a little earlier than expected- mid 30's. For me that's when the first signs of soreness and fatigue settled in. But as the saying goes, "You signed up for 100 miles. Did you think it wasn't going to hurt." Thankfully this first low was short lived. Passing mile 40 was a big boost. Then it hit...
The Storm- A solid 2-3 hours of rain. Heavy at times. Even a little bit of thunder and lightning. That radar was mean looking. The Thursday before the race I bought a $2 poncho. Best purchase ever. I have a rain coat but I wanted to keep it dry for later. Poncho kept my pack and core dry. Other people, who had nothing, looked downright miserable and some borderline hypothermic.
Strong miles- 45-69. Even in the rain and now muddy course I was ticking off the miles. Just as darkness hit I called home and talked to the boys. That was a good boost. I also shared some miles with Kira from ID. That was probably the most I talked to someone during the race. Then there was the guy who I chatted with who was doing his first hundred. When I asked him how he was feeling he said. "My legs are destroyed, but my soul is stronger." What a great mindset. I hope he finished.
The Night- Always a challenge and I was completely alone for the majority of it. All I had for company were some good podcasts, lots of something splashing in the canal, a sky full of amazing stars and some very vocal owls. So cool. I really tried to stick to the gratitude mindset of enjoy the moment and enjoy the current mile. Not always easy but I tried. But it was sure great to have...
Amazing aid stations- This is where ultra people shine. You go from the middle of nowhere and then come to a beautiful oasis with the most selfless people you'll ever meet. Strangers who will do just about anything to help you succeed. I need to pay it back soon. You haven't lived until you've had the most delicious grilled cheese at 3am in the middle of the woods. Oh and Coca Cola. If you know me there was plenty of that- early and often. Sorry to the woman at mile 88 when I refused her veggie enchiladas.
Miles 80-100- Gut check time with a little help from Jocko and Goggins in the earbud. At the time it's so much suffering and the fight is real. It's really one foot in front of the other and that's all that matters. Well, minus several stops to do some stretching and yoga poses in the middle of a few road crossings. Whatever it takes.
The Finish- I love those final miles. The finish line becomes a magnet. My watch hit 99 and I the finish felt soooooo close. Then I ran into a pacer heading out to find her runner. She yelled, "only 2.27 to go!" Ouch that hurt a little. I'd traveled 99 miles and 2.27 miles felt like 20 more miles. That's ultra brain right there. The finish line was so cool. Spotlights, a huge American flag and finishing in the predawn dark with an enthusiastic crowd. Minutes later I got a golf cart ride to the Colona Fire Dept. for a hot shower and a cot to get some rest. Again, top notch race.
After some tossing and turning rest it was back to the finish line for food and cheering on finishers. What a sight seeing those runners come in. Some with nothing left in the tank but pure determination and exuberance.
A great end to a day plus a few hours. Last but not least a shout to my sil @imadventure. Amazing support crew. That mile 54 aid station would have been miserable without you. And that paper plate came at a perfect time, TY!
Hennepin Hundred, 👍👍

I saw @imadventure post a pretty cool pic of her runs (& rides?) and had to make one for myself.
Even though the total mileage was a lot less than I was shooting for, it still feels nice to have this glimpse of what I actually did accomplish.

My SISU Report is up:
http://www.cyclova.com/2017/01/mullins-sisu-race-report.html
It was a good race. Just a little chilly at the end.
@imadventure - That was the first time I tried the “Frost Tape” branded/pre-cut strips. I’ve used moleskin once before. I wouldn’t say it keeps your face any warmer, but it seems to help prevent frostbite. I did see a few people with white spots on their cheeks and nose. I put it on and then slather Dermatone over the remaining bare skin.

Tonight I realized that after today's run my yearly mileage stood at 999.6. If only I would have known, I definitely would have stayed out for another .4. Then I take this "in the tree photo" which I see resembles the state I'll be traveling to in a little more than 20 days to take on 100 miler #3. I'll take that as a good omen. Finally, I hear @imadventure did a thing. I won't spoil it but Big Congrats 👍

Fun morning exploring some new to me sections of the Ice Age Trail. 18 miles with a little of everything. Rain, green tunnel single track, fields, hills, wildlife and a trecherous swamp crossing. It would be a bummer to fall in to that muck 😉. Thanks for the invite @imadventure

Galena Sky Trail Race-8 Hour
Over the course of 8 hours I covered the approx. 3 mile course 14 times plus 1 short out and back for a total of 42.6 miles. This was only my 2nd ever timed event but I really like this type of race. You'd think I'd grow tired of running the same 3 miles over and over again but that was never the case. Instead parts of the course become like an old friend you look forward to seeing again. A storm hit a few hours in to create some muddy conditions on the already challenging course. For the first race of '19 I felt pretty darn good throughout. There was a point when the legs started feeling extra heavy but I took in some extra rocket fuel (Coke) and I was good to go. Added bonus @imadventure and I both took home age group awards. Fun day that was much needed after a tough start to '19 but even tougher past week.

Kudos to @imadventure for coming up with the idea to stay at a cabin on the frozen Lake Michigan shoreline of Point Beach. Good run today too!

Over the years my oldest brother has repeatedly made the statement, “wait til you get on the other side of 35. Physically, it’ll all be downhill from there.” Biggest line of bullshit I’ve ever heard. Now that I’m on the other side of 35 I take every chance I can to prove him wrong. Today I did just that at the Grand Island 50k. Took 29 minutes off my 50k PR running a 4:57:11 (9:35 pace). I never thought I’d go sub 5 but it was just one of those great running days. Other things worth mentioning: -Heavy rains for the first few hours definitely added to the challenge. Like raging rivers flowing down the trail causing big washouts. -Today was a first on the nutrition front. I ran only on electrolyte drink (Gnarly) and gels. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely hungry at the end though. -Sub 5 definitely aided by the help of speedy @runningfurtherfaster. Nice sharing some miles with you. -Congrats to @imadventure for another solid 50k finish. -Growing up 45 minutes from this island I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get there and explore it. No better way to do it than an ultra. I’ll definitely return to this race again.
Oh yeah and running in the sand is pretty brutal.

Set the goal to swim at least once a week in November and December. So far so good. Took a page out of @imadventure 's playbook and did a main set of 10 x100m. Always have to make the last one the fast one. And for the final photo I give you the throne of Baxter. At least she's not attempting to climb the tree like her earlier years.
