Ngl, some people's "I wasn't allowed to be an irredeemably evil shitbird, ergo Veilguard is not an RPG" argument is extra funny to me, because I don't actually think there is a conceivable narrative in which, if your Rook did something as objectively amoral as selling people into slavery, they wouldn't wake up the next morning floating untethered in the raw Fade with Neve's bootprint on their ass, and the Lighthouse no more than a distant blip on the edge of their vision.
Like there is a lot to get into here that I just don't have the time or the spoons to go through, but I'd argue that one of the biggest strengths of Veilguard's writing is that the main cast are all very well-defined characters with their own sets of morals, ethics, and goals, and they collectively have more than enough of a backbone that if Rook did something that proved them incapable of leading the team to the story's climax and/or proved them to be of no benefit to them, they wouldn't fail their quest: they would just swiftly and efficiently get rid of Rook.
#dragon age#squirrel plays datv#dragon age the veilguard#veilguard#veilguard positive#dragon age fandom critical#fandom critical#da fandom critical#just covering my bases#like i could compare and contrast the way veilguard's and bg3's treatments of story and character differ and it'd take me all morning i fea#(long story short; it's apples to oranges)#but the gist of it is kind of what i've been saying all along:#that player freedom and narrative cohesion/complexity are in a delicate balance in any RPG#and require a give-and-take where the more freedom you give people; the simpler the core story must be#the more things you make optional; fewer indispensable elements the climax can have#like i know i sound fed up but i don't know why this seems to be so hard to grasp for some people

do you actually dislike the bird abode or just the creature designs? not saying the name directly so your ass doesn't get blasted by the tag
I like a lot of the creatures in it; the showrunner is a really fantastic horror artist and it really comes through in the aesthetics of the show. I especially like this hand dragon, though there's a lot of other great designs:

As for the show on the whole, it's not bad but not really for me? Early on it really feels like it's schtick will be that it's a subversion of harry potter-esque stories, where the protagonist wants to go on an adventure similar to her favorite fantasy book but instead ends up hanging out with the "villain" (who's actually just othered)/the magic school turns out to be secretly oppressive/the world is kind of gross and spooky instead of clean and approachable... but as it goes along I think it ends up being a pretty by the books YA fantasy thing played mostly straight, and it isn't super interesting or funny or scary or anything besides that. Which admittedly was probably to its benefit, I think a lot of its popularity comes from it being this very tropeish and not-uncomfortable magic school/found family story that's actually queer, like I genuinely think this is hugely appealing to the average cartoon fan on twitter, but I'm just not personally into it in comparison to a lot of it's contemporaries
#ok very slight tangent#this is such a weird nothing complaint but you know i really don't like that line of critique you see a lot amongst animation fans#where they praise a show for Sticking It To Steven Universe by killing off a villain#and the owl house's climax feels almost like it plays into that intentionally with the little star boy who thinks he can hug the villain#which in the moment was kind of souring for me even if that wasn't the intention (though certainly twitter thought it was)#because I find steven universe was so comparatively subversive and bespoke to itself and complete in its metaphors#that it felt nearly eye rolling#because it was like it was sort of priding itself on being normal and tropey in contrast to this more unique and confronting show#(this isn't why I'm a bit lukewarm on the show. I just think it's a lukewarm show & I again don't mean that in a damning way)#(but everytime the owl house comes up I can't help but think of it)#talking tag

so why is Luka obsessed with Hyuna anyway?
(mostly just trying to get my thoughts on Luka down before blink gone rewires my brain)
every pet human is extremely limited in freedom, but Luka's case is definitely the worst literally even his birth was by Heperu's design... he can't control any aspect of his own life, from his participation of ALNST (twice!) to what he eats on a daily basis
*translations all by whatafruit
humans have no power over segyein, and Luka doesn't even have any power over own his own body so what can he have power over, then?
other humans, of course
most obvious in round 5: Luka would've had an easy win even if he barely tried, but he goes out of his way to provoke Mizi anyway until she finally snaps... and he smiles as he's beaten
because this is his "power." he successfully manipulated Mizi into reacting, proving he has some control over the situation no matter how pointless it is in the grand scheme of things, this is all he can influence, so he makes the absolute most of it and this control is so important to him he doesn't care about his own physical injuries
it's Hyuna talking in this comic, but clearly reflecting Luka's own mentality
while for Hyuna it's likely just her love for singing and performing (whatever happens, they can't take this away from her) for Luka I imagine it's the ability to influence others from the stage (crushing his opponents, but also shaping his fanbase?)
...so back to Luka -> Hyuna
it’s mentioned more than a few times that Hyuna’s a really talented performer, but seeing their respective stat pages really drives it in

(think the “superiority test” Hyuna was put through relates to this also)
Hyuna doesn't seem to have been created in any special way like Luka was… she just has a natural affinity to performing. and that's enough that she’s considered a real rival to Luka—Luka, who was literally made for this, and put through constant hellish training on top (the pain of having your heart stopped...) to mold him into the perfect idol
to Luka… if he can’t dominate Hyuna, he can't even take pride in his own ability (that everything he's forced to go through amounts to something?). and power over other humans is all he has, so he needs to overpower Hyuna (also he likely admires Hyuna’s talents at the same time, which just adds to his twisted feelings)
so since his ability isn't enough... by making someone think of you, only you… that’s another way of having power over someone, isn’t it
“your life is mine” “I told you I only wanted one thing”
whatever exactly happened with Hyunwoo… well that certainly worked. both removing Hyuna's most important person and making Luka someone she can't not think of (oh and he doesn't seem particularly interested in Hyunwoo despite how similar the siblings are in personality? Hyunwoo was even the first to approach Luka, not Hyuna so it's likely because he doesn't have his sister's talents)
but you know how his intimacy(?) value for her is only 70% I figure that's because she escaped, so they could never actually face off onstage... maybe he's disappointed in her "wasting" her ability
what all this amounts to is that she did end up escaping his control, and he never even got to compete against her. so until he can somehow completely overpower her, he'll be obsessed with her
I wonder if this represents his final effort to that... ultimately, he values control over his own well-being, so if he can goad Hyuna into killing him, then doesn't that cement his power over her?
and maybe "saves" him from this hellish life too
kind of a tangent, but I really like how their designs contrast this dynamic Luka looks really angelic and androgynous, so from appearance he seems fragile and like someone to be protected (which even Hyuna seemed to be tricked by when they were younger) and Hyuna obviously looks the stronger one in comparison (very #girlboss (lol...))
but their relationship is one where Luka's trying to control her and Hyuna's trying to escape it... that "beautiful lady" line of ruler of my heart always felt somewhat uncomfortable, and then learning it's actually pitiful (가련한) instead of beautiful is... ...it's a very gendered dynamic, if you get what I mean. despite their surface-level appearances going against what's considered typical
#feel free to send me asks to argue btw#im being completely serious here i wanna discuss alnst oTL#alien stage#alnst#alnst luka#alnst hyuna#hyuluka#well it's... about their relationship...#im not going to try to make sense of his relationship chart comment bc my only reaction is 'is he stupid'#ndfgkd#but the artbook rly has a lot#i can't think of round 5 without thinking of rgu so that probably influences my view of luka too...#btw you're lucky im stopping myself here and not going into some excessively pointless tangent#about how he compares and contrasts with ivan#i can make posts without talking about ivan i prommy#'but you're talking about him now' tags don't count#if you somehow got all the way down here can u listen to 'do you want to fight me' by venus hum#why mention that on this post specifically? if u listen you'll understand trust me

I dunno if you’ve seen what’s in the isat artbook yet but there’s a mention in there of id5’s support of she/her Loop which made me think of that great post you made a while ago on Loop gender!!! Just thought I’d let ya know since that post was absolutely foundational to my personal Loop thoughts lol!
ok goofs aside lol hi. first of all: really funny that more than one of you thought of me for this. my powers. and second of all: okay ill actually give my thoughts.
alright so for the uninitiated (THIS POST) (+bonus link to it with extra additions i like) is what these two anons are talking about. It's about 8k words on my like, puzzled-out hard textual read of what i think is up with Siffrin/Loop's gender.
So, re: the artbook content (READMORE ON ACCOUNT OF ME GETTING LONGWINDED AGAIN)
The relevant passages here are pages 113, 38 and 39 (with a sidebar i want to bring up on 89).
I'm going to crop it down to only what is necessary to get to my point because adrienne doesn't want big chunks or full pages posting, so here's my little collage.
113: The page is primarily about finding ways to disguise Loop's true identity, and that's what most of the visuals on the page are about. The note I've cropped [Loop using she/her...] is on the most siffrin looking of these images, just being them sans cloak, eyepatch and hat.
This, to me, reads like the intent at the time was what eventually evolved into Loop's "Royal We" joke misdirect and their they/them only status. Consideration of, 'would just showing off a character nigh identical to sif but with "opposite" pronouns be enough to throw people off the trail?' that I would imagine evolved into just dropping the he/him, since that's more than enough to do so when you also change their appearence to be more ethereal.
*But* ArtbookCommentary!Adrienne is the one saying "She/her Loop is an incredible idea." owing to some level of affinity toward the concept in retrospect. Lends it some creator-branded 'cool points', which aren't worth *much* in terms of Quality of Textual Evidence, but certainly lends it points against being a *bad* read.
So I read this as like, while on it's own, not much more than conjecture when it comes to supporting the idea of transfemme loop-- I think as another arrow in the overall quiver it strengthens that idea that Siffrin is sticking by their he/hims as a like... side effect of how he was born/raised and sees change as something they can't do. It's less a point in support, and more a point *against* it being wrong. (It's like how in science you try to falsify things in order to prove them, y'know? Evidence *against* it being false is different to evidence *for* it being true, but it's almost better that way, sometimes??) Speaks to the idea that Loop would see those pronouns as a Disguise in some way, which to me, when paired with pages 38-39 and the dress* gives the implication that femininity is an untapped well for them. That it's new, and not something they'd do without a plausibly deniable excuse. Which continues to feed into my readings of Siffrin being amab and uncomfortable with change, even if (especially if) they want it in some way. It kind of has to be forced onto them to allow them to try it, because then it's not their choice, now is it?
*The dress is absolutely in reference to the prologue line, isn't it? it being grafted to their skin unlike the other considerations for clothes shown on the page too, aligns with this idea of Loop's body being informed by their wants/feelings about themselves in some way (distinctly inhuman, no need to eat, no need to smile anymore, yet still blind). But where canon!loop has no gendered traits to hold them down anymore, dress!loop would be more of a giveaway of their desires to at least express *some* femininity. (See: my prior essay for further thoughts on how i think that manifests, and my thoughts on it being a somewhat doylist read of the game's themes that i stand by)

(god buddy. you get deeper into the timeloop and it makes you . forget everything . about fucking everything . but the want that bubbles to the surface harder is this? loop. christ im repeating myself again go read my previously linked essay if you arent these two anons i go into way more detail.)
BUT YEAH. yeah.
I think it's a stretch to say things that aren't literally in game, and are still at most discarded exploration of character really count as Evidence for in-game reads, as they are paratext at best-- But. buttttttt buttttttt they do offer a good insight into the intent with which some things were most likely approached. like i say, it's not evidence /for/ my theory, just evidence /against/ me being on the wrong track. But yes i do feel pretty vindicated that this aligns so well with my amab nb siffrin/transfem loop trutherism. Which makes sense, given that the Whole Point of that read was to try and sleuth out the authorial intent, rather than anything else.
Like, i was following a framework in specific of (posts wikipedia screenshot for 'authorial intent')
as opposed to the equally valid Reader-Response framework (under which death of the author also falls)
which is why in that thing i stress so hard that i'm trying to abstain from my own bias (whether or not i succeed? idk. i do break my own rule for a second when pointing out how hard siffrin's fear of change resembles transfem repression in specific as i relate it to my friends and wider observations). but yeah. it was very nice that the artbook aligned so nicely since pairing my readings against the author's own literal words was always going to be the Ultimate Test™ for an authorial-intent based reading.
... oh ! and the sidebar i said i'd have.
Page 89:
get forcibly changed idiot. fucking themes lol (this was also vindicating as a 'loop stays as a star' truther which is something i tie into my themes of gender/sif not accepting change until its forced upon them. but it's not the mostest relevant to the convo without that context. but whee!)
#this is more of a victory lap ramble than a coherent theorypost but i deserve it so wahoo yippieee#isat artbook spoilers#isat spoilers#lucabytetalks#lucabytewrites#isat loop#i had several other theories and reads i dont think ive expounded upon (AND ALSO A NOHATS THING...) that felt like they were vindicated by#the artbook in this same way of like. confirming that what i was speculating was Most Likely the author's intent.#authorial intent is my like. favourite framework bc its the most fun to compare and contrast with my other favourite which#is obviously death of the author. saying this aloud is like admitting my favourite drink is fucking tap water. philistine behaviour.#(... anyway. i do have at least one drawing cooking that came from thinking about this. don't worry. or do.)

Is it weird that, the more posts you make about how being a genre fiction protagonist would suck and ruin your life (posts I love and think are great), the more I want to go full "No, suck eggs, Alan Moore, being a superhero is cool and good, actually?" I can't tell if it's mindless contraiantism or an actual point.
I think it's an understandable impulse, because there are absolutely strains of very-online genre-fic and cape-fic critique that, if taken super seriously as a blueprint for how fiction ought to be written, would basically amount to the Wertham Scare with a social justice gloss, and we don't need a second one of those. If a person bins the entire superhero genre as "irredeemably fascist" or anything similar, for example, I start paying extremely close attention to the implicit back half of that proclamation, the part where they lay out what part of that condemnation they consider actionable. The censorious should be made to eat their own black markers. You can do whatever you want forever.
On the other hand, you really can't get around what happens to a lot of escapist genre-fic- cape-fic in particular- if you apply any kind of scrutiny or big-boy grown up emotional or moral logic to it whatsoever. It wasn't built to survive that level of scrutiny, it wasn't built to still see publication 80 years after the fact- and indeed, stuff in that space that isn't seeing active mass-market success, John Carter and the like, that tends to get judged basically as harshly as I think it deserves. There really isn't any way around the fact that we're all playing Frankenstein with the innards of mass-market children's stories. And moreover I feel like there's an offputting mealy-mouthedness to a lot of the contemporary big-two output that notices the cracks in the foundation and tries to have their cake and eat it too, having capes that beat bad guys up but in a markedly progressive way. A certain level of pessimism and cynicism is often the only believable way to get those wires to connect if you're trying to make your spandex crowd interface with real-world cynicism. (Superman is ironically one of the Big-two properties that I think most consistently threads this needle. Batman has a harder time due to the billionaire thing. The X-Men are turbofucked and have been for a while.)
Astro City is one of the capethings that I think hits the best balance on all of this, and nonetheless one of the worldbuilding beats that does a lot of the heavy lifting on believability for me is that the Nixon Admin executed the setting's Captain American analogue on trumped-up charges as a show of force and as a distraction from Watergate. Because he would! He would do that! "What about Nixon" is a fantastic litmus test for this kind of thing IMO- even if the answer is that he was the head of a cult that built a mutant-powered flying saucer to take over the world with, that's still better than dodging the question entirely, or having Superman suck off Reagan like Byrne did.
#even a lot of the more pro-hero stuff tends to land on the synthesis that America is full of evil morons#who don't actually deserve for superheroes to be real#and to be fair this is kinda true#but you know#thoughts#meta#uncharitable#Also nice callback to that one watchmen/steven universe compare and contrast I did way back when#effortpost

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - The World That Never Was
#kingdom hearts dream drop distance#khddd#the world that never was#scenery#my gif#i really love how sora's side of this world is dark and eerie and fully leans into how dreams can distort and twist reality#the city looks mostly normal at first aside from the ghostly fog that seeps down from buildings and drifts along the floor and rises up#but as you keep going the ground beneath you is no longer a street but rather the faces of more buildings that stretch over an abyss#it's no longer the sprawling city you first arrived in but instead an uncanny one way path towards your destination#the buildings now twist and contort and are crooked and grow out of the ground in all kinds of ways that make no logical sense#it's the first time that a sleeping world looks easily distinguishable from the real world. it looks wrong. like a nightmare#meanwhile riku's half contrasts heavily by appearing to be fairly normal#the interior of the real castle never made any practical sense so nothing here feels too out of place compared to how it usually looks#it shows how much more in control riku is in comparison to how sora is losing his grip on reality as he descends further into their trap#cool stuff! love me some environmental storytelling#also i finished giffing every world in this game yippee i'm done (is covered head to toe in blood)

i see the difference between
asking with some small hope after getting to understand catra a bit better / demanding when catra knows shadow weaver's def lying about how much magic power she has left
and a huge variation in the motivations for their responses.
i see glimmer struck a chord with "one good thing" and catra's had a bit of an epiphany that this is literally her last chance to do that and keep her promise and she's willing to die doing it / and shadow weaver's reluctance to reveal she was, indeed, lying and likely having been struck by the chord of saving adora before it's too late, but not cause of adora's life, just cause she still needs her to get the failsafe to the heart

The character wig/makeup stuff in the Hobbit is incredible. Kili’s hair makes perfect sense. If you compare it to the hair the rest of the company has, you can see a clear distinction in texture and thickness. Dwarf hair is usually coarse and almost fur-like and can hold its shape (like in Bofur’s curled braids) and that texture continues into their beards. Kili’s hair is wispy, lighter in weight, and much similar to that of a human’s. Therefore, Kili’s beard is thin because all of his hair is thin!!!!! Cohesive character design!!
#i dont know if I’m explaining this in a way that makes sense#if you compare his beard to Ori’s you can see how different they are#kíli#the hobbit#i know a large part of Kili looking undwarfy is for ppl to fawn over him but i dont care I just love the Visual Contrasts its so fun

whenever i see other zolu shippers in the op fandom complain abt a lack of content, i always get all up in arms abt it mentally for lit no good reason. on some: “you damn kids don’t know how good you have it. back in my day, all my otps all had 24 fics on ao3 and damn it, we were HAPPY to have that!!” like bro who invited their goddamn grandpa
#but yeah like. i get compared zosan its not much but like that 24 is not an exaggeration#when i got into yyh the kuwameshi tag only had like. 86 fics i think. and even now it only has around 200-300#THERE ARE ALMOST 4k ZOLU FICS ON AO3 ALONE!!! THATS SO MANY!!!!!#absolutely on my “back in my day i had to walk to school up a mountain in a blizzard with no shoes BOTH WAYS” ik but. still!!!#THERE IS SO MUCH!!! YOUR HARVESTS ARE PLENTIFUL!!!!#it’s such a stark contrast going from yyh to op bc the one piece fandom is so big and popular like the content never stops#one time the kuwameshi tag didn’t update for like a full month and a half. gluttony 😭#but yeah like it just kills me. you should have seen the look on my face when i saw sanuso has like 800 fics i was like “this is madness“#there is SO MUCH!!! CONTENT!!!!!#193 glorious glorious pages of zolu fic. all taken for granted.#in conclusion everyone should hyperfixate on a dead fandom at least once. it builds character. teaches gratitude.#saying all of this in a humorous and hyperbolic way btw!! please don’t fucking jump me i just thought this would be funny 🧍♂️#taking zero chances. this may be a shitpost but yall are vicious.#fishboy talks

i am normal about tv mensah and pin-lee's dynamic
#murderbot tv show#murderbot gifs#i said i'd make a prettier gifset but i can't help it every goddamn frame of this scene is perfect. i tried lol#look how desperate and ineffectual and scared for her pin-lee is!!!#the tears in their eyes... the way they briefly look at her mouth before meeting her eyes when she grabs their collar...#the WAY she grabs their collar and the lean in and the both of them so overwhelmed/strained ugh it's so intense and gorgeous#and the tugging.. godddd (yes i slowed that shot down a ton i am so obsessed with everything about that shot lol)#like how tenderly mensah holds/moves pin-lee's collar compared to what p-l does with mensah's hand earlier... ajfhdjdfhjfkd#and how pin-lee yelling and panicking seems to ground mensah.. god it's so fucking perfect#also pin-lee's closing argument being “not cool” really gets me.. it's like they totally gave up on convincing her.. on brute force even!#and this episode really got me thinking more about the dynamic the show paints between pin-lee and arada#contrasting how desire/infaturation seem to manifest for pin-lee and arada is really really interesting to me#and the weird shape of their relationship dynamic and how p-l's possible thing for mensah might affect that/their behavior#especially since prior to the hopper scene in this ep it's possible arada was completely unaware.. and possibly.. now she knows. like?? wow#and i think i could write a whole essay comparing and contrasting p-l and gurathin's interpersonal behavior wrt how they navigate mensah#how there is shame entitlement and respect all at once for both chars.. & it looks so different. they manage their feelings so differently#btw... i love how pin-lee looks like they're almost about to cry as they step back and turn away#but i suppose they channel the feeling + fear into anger (at themselves/the situation) by the time they get to the hopper. nom#okay bye#ayda mensah#dr mensah#pin-lee

Batman & Robin: Year One (2024) #1
#I like this approach to conveying Bruce’s feelings in a way he won’t express himself#while Bruce’s concern is showing on his face- his reaction isn’t as intense as the woman yelling for her babies#I think the primary intention is to emphasize his paternal feelings rather than negatively contrast him to the civilian parents#since this book is using the portrayal that Bruce is a good father#but this technique inherently also creates contrast#like between the emotional embrace of the parents and their children compared to Bruce only having a hand on Dick’s shoulder#dc#dick grayson#bruce wayne#my posts#comic panels
