Spirit of a Sword
In an AU where objects can have spirits, Technoblade is the spirit of the sword called Orphan Obliterator unbeknownst to most. Following the execution, Dream runs away with Techno recharging in the sword.
Story for Day 10 (Injured, "I've got you.") of the Christmas Dreamnoblade Event by @alterdnbweek
Also on Archive of our Own. This AU is basically a remix of an old AU i had which i got new fire for after seeing rainystressed's dpurbyfiarsl AU, plus some additional inspiration by one of my favourite Zelda companions Fi.
Commotion came from the area of the stage. It was rather easy to pick out Techno's voice among the others even with Dream and Punz's hiding spot. They had him. They would lock him on display as the anvil fell.
Dream hoped the piglin found a totem of undying with the map he gave, especially considering both their skills with maps. It wouldn't prevent him from dying, but it would prevent it from being permanent and Dream having to use an item, he'd rather keep hidden from all except for Punz for a bit longer.
They both kept watch as things progressed. Until Dream gave the signal and Punz pearled in. The surprise was working, all of them were caught off guard. Dream headed down towards Carl and guided them both to a place near the van where Techno had to spot them and would hopefully then come to him.
But instead of the green flash of life magic or the white flash from visiting death, there was a pink one. Quick and left behind a similarly coloured mist that moved through the cage and past him towards the hole where Dream had planned to lead Techno to. Where his items were.
Dream followed it closely with the horse, blocking off the entry after and ignoring the yells behind him. The mist didn't stop, heading further down to where he had placed the iron armour and other items that Techno could have used, as well as the few items that Dream had already managed to steal back from the butcher army.
The chest with Techno's name on it glowed faintly from inside before dimming.
When he opened it, the sword, Orphan Oblitorator was still faintly glowing before the glow became a shimmer similar to that of an enchantment except for the colour difference. Instead of the purple, it was the same pink as the times before. He chuckled. So undeniably Techno. He couldn't imagine anyone else with that shade.
His suspicions that formed with the mist were confirmed and he didn't know how to feel about it. Maybe relief that he's not the only one. Maybe curiosity. It didn't matter.
What mattered was getting Techno out. Especially now that the piglin couldn't really do it himself unless the sword suddenly grew two legs or wings.
Considering the height the anvil fell from, he estimated it would take more than a day for Tech to reform. A time he would need to either ensure was spent away from enemies' hands himself or have someone he could trust do it.
Phil would be a good option. A long-time and trusted friend of Technos. If only he wasn't under house arrest and it wouldn't be too risky to try breaking him out now. He'd have to wait. Punz and Sam would be other good options. Both trustworthy and dedicated. But both were busy.
He'd probably prefer to do it himself anyway.
The items left for Techno got put back into his inventory before he gently lifted the sword and put it into the sheath around his belt. It shouldn't prevent him from coming back like putting him in his inventory would. And besides, an inventory slot doesn't fit Technoblade. The sheath doesn't really either but it's at least a bit better.
"I've got you," he whispered.
Dream was about to head further down when he spotted Quackity behind him, expression first surprised then souring into anger. "What the- Dream? What the fuck. Of course. Of course, you are here. Where is Technoblade? Did you help him escape? How did- How did you do it?"
The words "I wish" were on his tongue. If he actually had managed to help him escape, if he had any plan for that, Technoblade wouldn't be recharging inside the sword right now.
Subtly he tried to remove the sword from Quackity's eyesight while starting to gesture with his hands. "You really think Techno would need my help to escape? I mean I'm flattered, y'know? But he didn't need me."
"Sure. Sure. So you have Carl just for fun. Wanted another horse whose leather can be swung in front of your face." Dream's grip on the orphan obliterator tightened, still, he refrained from swinging any weapons, least of all swinging that sword. "Where is Techno, Dream? I saw Punz. You told him to disrupt the execution, didn't you?"
"To be fair, Techno has enough to buy Punz himself. He wouldn't need me for that."
"Everyone knows how you two are working together." They know, for now, Dream thought. "So tell me where Techno is and how you helped him escape or this will get ugly. I will even let you keep the horse if you spit it out."
"Hmm. I mean this would be a lot more threatening if it wasn't coming from you." Quackity for all his skill in getting people to join his cause, wasn't a fighter. "So listen. I'm gonna go with Carl and you go back to your country. Got that?"
"I won't let you leave, Dream. Tell me where he is." Quackity demanded as he held the diamond axe pointed to him.
"No. I won't just tell you where he is even if i knew."
"Okay, that's it." Quackity ran straight at him which nearly made Dream want to chuckle. He didn't pay attention to the words exchanged after the first hit. The fight - which could barely even be called that - was over quickly. A few hits with Nightmare and the duck hybrid crumbled to the floor. Breath wheezing from how it tried to still get in air despite the slit throat.
Dream kneeled down, looking Quackity in the eyes. "Don't waste your breath."
Seconds later, the body dissolved. Slowly fading to signify the first life lost and the other two remaining. With flint and steel, he burned the scattered items, only taking those that seemed useful. Tactics from back when he was hunted more widely still were useful.
After a quick check on his surroundings to ensure no more surprise attackers, he started leading Carl again, hoping the faint whispers of "Blood for the Blood God" he could hear were just his imagination. Maybe Technoblade's influence.
At some point, the path opened up more which also meant Dream could go onto the horse again, which he did after holding out a golden apple to it. It inspected the food with a few sniffs before deeming it safe and biting into it while Dream petted it. A beautiful and strong horse. He could see why Technoblade liked it.
He settled on its back and quickly ordered it forward. The rest of the way went by in a breeze despite sticking to the Overworld. Nether travel seemed risky with how they might predict it.
The cabin was soon in view. The moon is by now high up and reflecting the sun's light down onto the world.
He stepped down and fed another golden apple to it. Ignoring background whispers of him spoiling the horse and being soft. Softwastaken. Dreamwassoft. Not the strangest of thoughts his mind summoned. Though they were annoying nonetheless.
There was no one in the cabin except for the animals and enderman Techno was housing. It felt empty without the piglin’s big figure and warm voice. He should be back soon.
But for now, he racked his brain for whatever Punz usually does if he is like this. Keep out of inventory. Keep close or hidden. Repair of broken. Wait.
Techno was still out of his inventory and in his sheat. His plan for now was to stick around till either Techno came out again or Phil escaped which he should message Punz for. See if they can figure out a way. Later.
Dream remembers feeling his surroundings when he was like the piglin is now. He mulled over it a bit as he ventured upstairs and placed Techno on the bed. The blanket was left off of him. He didn't know how, when or where Techno would form, best to keep it uncovered.
Something Punz would sometimes do is fix him if he had any rips in his other form. But Techno's sword didn't seem in need of any repairs. The blade was as sharp as ever and beautifully smooth. The handle provided a good grip even if it was a bit large for Dream. It's design still left him in awe. It was a masterpiece just like its soul.
Which made him wonder how Techno had become like this. Was he born or rather made like this? Or was he cursed like Dream? Or maybe not a curse but a connection through many battles won and much blood spilt that led to his soul possessing the sword after his death?
But if he wasn't always like this when did it change? How long has he been the spirit of a sword? Did-
A squeak interrupted his mind. Something small, furry and white peaked out from the trapdoor before scrambling further up and along till it was on the bed. Dream was about to rush forward but stopped in his tracks when he saw the fox was just curling up on top of the sword.
It was just cuddling with its owner. Wait, does it know that’s Techno? Can animals sense object’s souls when they are in the object? He’s gonna need to test this once he can. Speaking of testing, he meant to text Punz.
You whisper to Punz: did you get away?
Punz whispers to you: yes. only a few minor cuts. how about you?
You whisper to Punz: same on my end
You whisper to Punz: is phil still under house arrest?
Punz whispers to you: yes. want me to get him out?
You whisper to Punz: yes
You whisper to Punz: Techno is like me
You whisper to Punz: currently recharging on his bed
You whisper to Punz: will wait till Phil gets here or he gets back
Punz whispers to you: alright
He looked back to the bed where the fox seemed asleep by now. On the nightstand, he spotted a few trinkets. A smaller bell, a lapis lazuli, a letter, a stone that looks familiar and a book. Curious he came closer till he could make out the title. “Love Across Dimensions”. It didn’t sound like something he could see Techno read. Even more curious now, he opened it to the first few pages and quickly got even more surprised or rather confused.
It turned out to be an encyclopedia on courting rituals in different species ranging from the common human to the rarest ender dragon hybrid. There was a loose page with different hybrid species written down including dragon, goat and avian.
Dream opened the list of contents again and flipped shortly to the piglin section. He got a few sentences in before another ping got him out.
Punz whispers to you: Btw, congrats on the kill
He messaged back a quick thanks and then put the book back where it was. With nothing else to do but wait, he shifted into a wolf to better blend in just in case anyone came in.
Settled beside the bed, he keeps his ears sharp, listening for any threat.
Nothing happens for hours until the wall gets drenched in a pink hue.
Dream glances up to the bed. The sword is glowing, the fox now moved further down the bed away from it. The pink mist from before exits the sword again and shapes into a familiar form.
Technoblade groans from where he reformed again and Dream forgets for a second which shape he took and lets out a yip, drawing Techno's attention.
“Huh? You’re not one of my dogs. How did you get in here?”
Deciding he’d rather not have Techno know he’s a wolf right now, he heads straight down and out, opening the door with little issue. He hears the piglin call out for him but ignores it. If Techno knew, the shifter wouldn't hear the end of it.
And later when they prepare for Doomsday and Techno mentions the wolf with a smirk towards Dream’s direction, he will deny any relation at all. Denial which Techno will not believe.

Phantom of a Book
Tumblr media
Summary: While in prison, Techno finds out a new fact about Dream and with it a new escape route opens up for his roommate. The choice of whether or not to use said escape plan gets taken out of their hands, however, when a visitor comes. (7,280 Words)
Aka. a Fic that was supposed to be finished on the 17th December for the Dreamnoblade Christmas Event. I just now managed to finish the second chapter which is why i didnt post it here before.
Bubbling of lava was the only sound reigning in the cell.
It had been weeks since Technoblade joined Dream in prison. Two months if Techno's inner clock was still to be trusted. Which it was more than Dream's at the very least. The green teletubby's was pretty destroyed by now considering he didn't even know how long he had been in prison so far.
And technically, Techno was already supposed to be out and about. By a bit under 2 months to be exact. Either Phil's inner clock was just as terrible as his roommates or he forgot to read the will.
Either way, it didn't seem like his original escape plan was happening any time soon. As a result, they had started to try digging a tunnel from the hole in the corner. And it was successful so far. They already got... two blocks downwards with Dream right now breaking the next one a bit to the side.
Every now and then he'd get him to pause a bit and eat something. Only having potatoes didn't give Techno much to work with but he still tried to cook them a bit so they weren't completely raw at least. It was working okay-ish, he'd say.
He wished being the spirit of an object would erase any need for food. Then at least they wouldn't need the potatoes. Unfortunately, they were only halfway a spirit so to say.
Speaking of that subject. He was still curious how Dream seemed to know what to do with him when he was recharging in the sword. It’s not common knowledge after all. And he doubts there are many books on the topic if any. So the only way he could see Dream knowing about this was through personal experience. Which brought up another question.
Was Dream friends with someone like Techno or was Dream himself like him?
Glancing over to his roommate, it was hard to tell. Similarities to the object are usually only obvious once the object is known. But considering he also didn't know what Dream even was, it would be even harder.
His right eye reminded him much of an eye of ender down to the slitted pupil while the other was more pale, probably a result of what also caused the scar across said eye. His hair was as white as snow but that seemed more recent. Looking at his black hands, he still didn’t have any more clue. He could see the guy as the spirit of a weapon, maybe his Nightmare axe but he knew that didn’t need to be true. Philza once told him off a librarian who had been the spirit of the very library she worked at. There was also someone that had been the soul of a pair of elytras.
“What are you staring at?” Dream asked in an annoyed tone.
“How did you know what to do?”
“What do you-”
“At the execution, when I had to retreat into the sword. How did you know what to do?”
Dream stared to the side. “Does it matter?”
“Of course. Chat’s curious. Imagine the clout I could get from potentially unlocking more of the mysterious guy’s backstory.”
“Well, curiosity killed the cat.” The guy muttered, probably in an attempt to get Techno to stop pursuing the topic. Unfortunately for both, Techno could be stubborn.
“But satisfaction brought it back. And besides, Technoblade never dies and with it Chat too. Thought you’d know by now.” Techno chuckled.
Dream grumbled.
-----
There were many topics Dream would rather talk about than this. So many in fact that Dream tried to pick any that would distract Techno from the current one.
“You know, if you are also like me, you can just tell me. I won’t judge. I won’t use it against you or whatever you think I will do.”
“Why are you talking like you already know?”
“Call it a hunch. I have been told to have a sixth sense by some.” The piglin grinned at the other who in turn raised an eyebrow as the edge of his lips moved slightly up.
“A sixth sense or voices that whisper hints?”
“Eh. Same thing.”
Dream's tail swished back and forth as silence resumed. His thoughts stayed on the topic, debating with himself if he maybe should tell him. He already clearly knew that he was something. Besides, Dream knew what Techno was.
“Fine.” Dream stared back at the lava wall, vehemently ignoring Techno’s presence and gaze at him as he stood up.
“So are you-”
“I’m the Revival Book.” Dream confessed to Techno with a firm look all while broadening his shoulders and uncurling. Something Techno seemed to find amusing, though he didn't comment on it. Though it was unsurprising. Technoblade still seemed taller despite sitting. Taller and handsomer with the orange glow of the lava throwing him into a warm hue.
"Ah." was all that Techno uttered at first. Eyes slightly widened either at Dream telling him or the object named.
Dream's tail kept swishing back and forth behind him and he resisted the urge to wrap it around his own leg. "Well, roommate who is also the spirit of the book that can bring people back. I may have a new escape idea." Techno announced happily though Dream could see the nervousness on his face which made him instantly hesitate.
"And what's that?"
“You know how we can retreat into our object at any time if we want to? If you have the book here, what if you-”
“No.” Dream could see where this was going and no way in hell would he do that.
"Very fair. Very fair. Can't blame ya considering the horror stories that exist. I can tell ya, being stuck in someone's inventory is not pleasant. 1/5 stars. I'd take this vacation over that any day." Techno chuckled. “Well. Guess we will stick to the current plan.”
“What would it even bring? I can walk myself out so me being in your inventory won’t bring much. At most, there’s one less person to fight against Sam and anyone else who wants to stop us.”
“Well, not if a certain someone finally read the note I left him. You know how I knew this was a trap? Well I had planned that someone gets me out via a stasis pearl chamber. If he still were to read the note at some point, I could get us both out as long as you have the book with you here. But also I get it if you don’t wanna.”
Dream stayed silent. What if Techno doesn’t ever let him out?
-----
More time passed. Techno’s suggestion was almost like an elephant in the room, keeping a certain amount of tension in it. Neither spoke about it. Not that they talked that much during said time anyway. Only quick words when food got dropped in or the silence got too much. Despite not doing much, this place had a strange way of sucking the energy out of people. Probably the mining fatigue extending into more areas than just mining.
A chance to escape, one requiring lots of trust. Techno wouldn’t blame him if he passed up on it. He would still return later for the teletubby whether the guy trusted him or not. He couldn’t leave him here. When he first heard of Dream’s imprisonment he figured the favour would be used for a breakout. By now Dream wouldn’t even have to use the favour for it. Techno get him out with or without it. He couldn’t leave anyone in here, especially someone who had never gone against him and instead assisted him. Heck, he had any chance to keep him in weapon form and instead took care that he could come back as soon as possible. He will get Dream out.
Who knows, maybe it's even a courtship behaviour for whatever species Dream is. He’s pretty sure he saw something with cages and caging under one species, either creepers or wardens.
He was brought out of his musings when Dream stepped in front of him, leaning against the wall in what looked like an attempt to keep the pressure off his right foot.
“Okay.” Dream’s voice cracked halfway through. It had gotten better before but with the new silence, the bit of progress regressed a bit.
“Heh?”
“You can put me in your inventory.” He could see Dream slightly shaking, something he tried to unsuccessfully suppress.
It took Techno several seconds to respond, surprised by either the trust or saddened by the desperation. Considering who it was, the latter seemed more likely even if he hoped it wasn’t that.
Before he could respond in any way shape or form though, redstone ticked loudly alongside the heavy shifting of machinery.
Dream tensed immediately, form stiffening more than Techno thought possible. He barely wasted a second as he put himself between his roommate and the slowly retreating lava curtain.
It only took him a small bit of time to register who was on the other side.
Sam, of course, Warden of the prison. And Quackity.
-----
"Well. Well. Well. If it isn't my two favourite prisoners. How have you been? You been good?" Quackity asked as he waltzed off the bridge wearing netherite armour and ...were those shears?
"Yeah, you know. We've just been chilling. Not much to do in here." Techno replied while keeping his eyes on him, only shortly glancing over to Dream who was standing in the other corner, leaning on the chest.
"Hm. Im sure. I'm sure." The duck's eyes squinted at him as the grin stayed on him. He turned around to where Sam was still observing them from the other side and called out "Okay, well. Sam-" Seeing a chance, Techno sprung forward, not seeing his roomy shaking his head as a pink fist connected with Quackity in an attempt to throw him into the lava below.
Unfortunately, the three months had taken their toll, the punch not doing much besides pushing Quackity a bit further just before the edge where he turned quickly to him. "Yo, what the fuck?! What the fuck is wrong with you, Techno?! We didn't even start! What is wrong with you?" Techno chuckled even as the duck was slashing at him with the shears, leaving multiple cuts of varying size and depth. "I was gonna ease into it. I was gonna ease into it. Okay but since you so clearly wanna rush things along, why not?"
"Sam! Keep this guy in check." Keeping him in check apparently meant, aiming a bow at him with an arrow notched, ready to fire any second.
When Techno looked back in the cell, he saw Dream near the hole, Quackity close to him. "Here's what's gonna happen. I am sick and tired of these prison visits." He stepped closer and closer to Dream, with his roommate trying to get further and further away to the other corner until he was pressed against the chest. "I've been trying to get the revival book for the longest time, Dream. And today, you are gonna give me the book. You wanna know why?"
"I'm not giving you the boo-"
Quackity slammed his fist against the wall right next to Dream's face. "You wanna know why? Because this guy, this guy right here is your only way out of here and if you won't give me the book, he dies and with it your only chance of getting out of here. That's the only reason he's here. So that I finally get the book after all this time you’ve wasted."
"That's kinda harsh,” muttered Techno. “Don't do it, Dream."
"You know what I don't even care if you break out. If this guy gets you out. All I care about is the Revival book, and you are gonna give it to me.” If Quackity had half the knowledge about stuff, he's gonna care a bit more probably. Besides, it's not like Techno can really die. Not unless his Sword gets smashed to bits and the Sword is safely tucked away at home. Speaking of death...
"Wait. Hear me out. Hear me out, Dream. Does he really have any leverage? Cause if he kills me and my best friend is a Necromancer, doesn't that kinda just work out? You could just revive me after. I'm just saying." Dream’s eyes were locked onto his, the same thought Techno had probably crossed him too. Techno won’t die. Then his gaze skittered to Quackity, awaiting his reaction which was as expected another slice of shears at the piglin before turning to Dream again.
"You know what just give me the Revive Book. Just give me it. I'm not playing games anymore. I don’t care."
“I can’t give you the Revival Book, you know that. Hell, even if I could give you the book you're just gonna kill me. And probably kill Techno right after. The whole reason I'm in here is cause I have the book. Otherwise, I'd be dead."
"Okay then you know what. What if I just killed you both right now? No more best friend for you, Techno. And no headaches for me. Why not stop the madness, right? Not like the book brought many good things with it anyway, did it? So I'm just gonna kill you both and get this over with."
"Now let's just relax first. Let's calm down." Techno tried, moving both hands up to no success as Quackity didn’t stop talking.
"No no. I should just kill you both right? So why not? Starting with you Techno and don’t think I’ gonna forget about you, Dream. And I'm gonna make sure it's painful enough as payment for ruining the execution and every second I have wasted here just because you couldn’t do a single thing. Just because you wouldn’t tell me and wouldn’t open that goddamn book." Any protests from Dream got ignored as Quackity turned to Techno. "I've been waiting a long ass time to do this." The first slash still hit him but the next got blocked by Dream who put himself between them. "Oh, you wanna go first? Wanna make sure that there's no chance for Techno to come back? Want him to watch his buddy die? Fine by me."
Techno tried to pull Dream away, out of Quackity's range but before he could make much progress, the rips on Dream's form spread. Rips that reminded him of torn-apart pages until they split apart entirely and green mist formed. Green mist which seemed to dissolve but turns out to have just entered the object as a book was left behind. One that Techno didn't hesitate to grab before Quackity could. And by the duck's wide grin and eyes, he knew that the guy was aware of what it was even if he didn't know the full extent of its connection to Dream. "Techno, give me the bo-" He saw the swing and felt part of the blade enter before the sensation abruptly left. His arms stayed raised in defence as he slowly took in where he was.
Blackstone walls with Nether bricks. A pink sheep connected with a led to a wall decoration bearing three wither skulls. Lava flowed down in the corners and stone bricks on the floor, some with moss.
It was the Syndicate Meeting Room. He was out. He was-
"Did it work?" A familiar voice. A familiar voice that he was incredibly glad to hear.
"Oh my god. Phil." He was still on edge as he turned to his best friend for years.
"Here, drink that. Drink that." The immortal handed him a glass of milk alongside a golden apple. Both of which Techno gladly consumed.
"Phil. I gave you that book three months ago, Phil!" Techno exclaimed once he swallowed the bite he took out of the apple. His wounds healed, stitching themselves back together with the feeling of pins and needles pricking his flesh.
"You said three months!" Philza tried to argue.
"No, I did not! I thought you'd take like two days. I've been in jail for three months!"
A look of realisation came across his oldest friend. "Wait, wait wait. Oh my god, you said three days."
"Bruuuh."
"Well at least you got a book out of it, it seems."
Ah. He nearly forgot. He looks down at his right hand, still holding the book, still holding Dream there.
"What's with it?"
"Well. The good news is, we don't need to head to the prison soon."
"Not fancying another visit to Dream?"
"I mean if he was still in there, I'd go back. You know break him out and stuff. Return the favour and all.” Techno moved back to his hair, settling down into it and setting Dream down on the table, out of his inventory even if it would probably take a while for him to come back with the hits he took.
"Did he break out?"
"Now yes. Next thing is waiting till he’s back." His gaze stayed on the book, noting the glowing green writing, and the firm but used-looking leather cover. An eye of ender was sitting on the front inside a golden frame. One that looked just like Dream's. Slowly the parallels became clearer.
The white hair from the pages that were still as white as snow despite the many years this book probably existed. The eye. The black on his hands from the ink that likely stained the pages. And the green highlights in his hair from the glowing title.
It made sense.
Dream is the spirit of the Revival Book.
----- ----- -----
It's been a few days since Technoblade got teleported out of the prison.
Getting used to being out again went well so far. Sure, he may be a bit apprehensive about potatoes now. For all the love he held for the multi-use vegetable, even he could apparently get enough of them, especially when he's had nothing but potatoes for weeks. If they had at least been prepared in different ways but no. A shame considering how many different delicious meals one could cook with them. But now he lacks any appetite for them. Dream probably won't have one either once he returns, whenever that is.
Dream's book was still on the pillow where Techno had put it upon entering the room. He figured out quickly that he wasn't entirely comfortable with leaving Dream out of his sight in this state. Sure, he'd probably notice if anyone tried to sneak in but this felt safer. Besides, this way he got a comfortable amount of warmth from the fireplace while still staying a good distance away. Techno's been freezing more than usual after getting used to the heat of the cell. No doubt Dream would have even more issues considering his longer stay. He's probably gonna need several layers of clothing when he comes back.
If he comes back.
Techno tried to shake that thought.
Now he knows that there can be different recharging times from one object spirit to another. Heck, with all the things Dream went through in that prison, it shouldn't be surprising that he took a bit longer. It didn't stop Techno's worry from constantly nagging. It didn't stop a few of the voices from throwing in their concerns as well.
The book still had that green shine over it. Dream was still alive. Logically, he knew that. The small bit of a tail he had barely ever ceased from swishing back and forth whenever his thoughts drifted to his roommate. There was nothing he could do but wait. Wait and hope Dream returned.
Knock, knock.
Techno turned to the door, hand already on his sword's handle before he even thought about it. Silently, he neared the door.
Chances were, it was just Phil who had made it a habit to check on him daily. Preferring to be safe than sorry though, Techno listened first to make out anything suspicious. Not that it was needed when a voice soon rang out. "Heya, mate. It's me." Just Phil. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and nearly earned Phil's fist in his face when he opened the door.
"You know, I'm all for trying out new greetings but I don't think a fist to the face is the best." Techno smiled more when Phil let out a laugh at that.
"Didn't expect you at the door so soon. Anyway, you ready for the meeting?"
He stared at his friend blankly for a tick. And another. "About that..." He sheepishly looked away, avoiding Phil's gaze.
"Did you forget about it?"
"Yup." His mind was running between preparing for any unwanted visitors, preparing for when Dream was back and taking care of his usual chores. Everything else had slipped his mind.
Phil clapped him on the back. "It's fine. Come on. We still got time."
They packed and headed out with Techno carrying Dream in a bag that would hopefully not prevent him from forming like being in an inventory would. The meeting itself went by in a blur. His mind drifted to the book beside him. To the person in it. Like it always seemed to. Even before this whole thing, his mind would sometimes drift to Dream. Curious about what his favourite flower might be, his favourite animal and more.
When Niki and Ranboo asked where he'd been the last months, Phil answered for him. Explaining how he'd been locked up and stuck there till Phil, rather late, got him out with the stasis chamber. What followed were concerns about Dream's breakout and questions of if he had anything to do with it to which Techno was honest. Though he did try to avoid mentioning how Dream's like him, well aware that the teletubby would prefer as few people as possible to know his status as spirit. Techno himself avoided many people knowing. Too many had wished to wield the sword that housed the mighty warrior.
Luckily, he managed to calm them mostly down, partly thanks to bringing up a few things about how the prison was handled and reassurances that he would ensure their safety.
The meeting got dismissed rather early and once Techno was back at his cabin, he only went out to feed the animals again before falling into bed, taking the book with him.
-----
More days passed. So many hours and still Dream didn't come back out. Techno continued with attempts to keep his worry down. Him and Dream just take different times to form again. The teletubby had been tortured for weeks by the time he was there. They had different objects, him a sword and Dream a book. Maybe it's the material. Maybe- Maybe Quackity had carved into Dream while in the book. So many factors that could delay it. So many reasonable explanations.
Maybe Dream just didn't feel safe to come back around him? He tried not to think about that. But also, he couldn't blame Dream if that was the case. He couldn't put him outside. That was too risky. What if someone decided to visit right then and take him? No one had come to attack yet. No warden or duck or ex-best-friends with a murderous promise. None. Yet.
He glanced at the unmoving book on what could probably be considered a makeshift nest. Pillows and blankets and a cloak he had made for Dream surrounded the book from beneath and around. The faint green shimmer never stopped, reminding Techno of an enchanted object. It reminded him of how Phil and Chat described his sword whenever he was inside.
It was beautiful and unnerving at once. The longer he stared, the more he could see the parallels between the book and Dream. The eye of ender on the cover fit with the one Dream had. The green glowing writing in enchanting language matched the words he could see through some tears in the clothing Dream wore when they tried the book on Techno. The pages nearly looked white as snow or rather Dream's hair. If he took a guess, the ink used for the words and sketches inside was probably as black as the tips of Dream's claws that gradually went over to his usual skin tone along the arm or the words on his skin when not using the book.
He gently felt along the cover with one of his hands before removing it as if burned. He technically held the book for multiple minutes by this point - hours if one were to include the time he accidentally fell asleep with it in his arms - still he tried to keep it to a minimum for Dream's sake. He knew Dream wasn't the biggest with touch. Touch-starved? Most likely, based on how he still leaned towards Techno in prison and how he'd been before, way before. Willing to touch? Eh. Considering the bits he learned while roommating with him in prison, it wasn't surprising. Trust this broken is hard to get again, even more so when all recent touch seemed to have been with the intent to hurt.
It reminds him of himself before he met Phil.
A groan brought him out of his musings. Steve was looking at him with such a puppy-eye look that Techno barely had to think about what he wanted. "You hungry, Steve?" Another groan. "Alright. Alright. You get your food." He rose back to full height before picking Dream's book up. "Just need to do something quickly." He tried to carry as many blankets and pillows too before moving everything downstairs into a mostly hidden corner in the basement and restarting the nest. Maybe if the delay was due to being constantly in the same room as him, this would help Dream feel comfortable enough to come back.
He stepped away, eyes on the book before turning and climbing back up and started making dinner.
-----
Having many animals had its perks, Techno would like to note. They were good company, fighters and more. However, they could also be a disturbance to his plans.
When Techno woke up the next day, he found Dream's book next to him, one of the foxes lying on top of it.
He sighed, before softly petting the fox which continued to sleep despite the gradual removal of the book from below it. With it in hand, he headed down and started his daily routine, item placed once more on a seat near the fire.
The voices started throwing different suggestions for why Dream was still in there. Ranging from simple refusal to death. He tried to ignore that last suggestion. Dream couldn't be dead. The book would have to be destroyed. Just like the sword had to be broken and shattered into pieces for Techno to die. The voices were wrong. Nothing more to it.
He tended to his farm and animals, cooked and fixed some of the fence around their clearing that was starting to deteriorate a bit. A squirrel shortly paused his work as it climbed along the structure.
It was when he was putting away the dishes that a green light from behind made him freeze.
Turning showed a green mist taking shape around the book and a second later, Dream sat there, left eye focused on Technoblade as his face shifted between multiple microexpressions.
Dream was there. Dream was back. His hair was still white, one eye with a whiteish hue over it and one leg missing.
They both stared at each other for several ticks.
"Welcome back, teletubby." Techno greeted him, trying to go for humour with all the relief in his chest at seeing Dream out.
"Why didn't you open it?" Dream asked, voice rough from not having used it in more than two weeks. A frown sat on his face.
"Huh?"
"I've been inside for days. You had so many chances. Why didn't you open it?" Dream looked at him as if he had grown a second head. As if he was a puzzle he couldn't solve.
"Why should I?" Techno asked back. "You didn't give away what was inside even under torture. I could be wrong but I was under the impression you weren't really a fan of anyone else knowing what was written inside."
"Yeah, but not like that ever mattered. It sure as hell didn't matter when Sam let Quackity in the first time. Didn't matter when Quackity tried to get it to open with an axe while I was inside."
"It matters to me," Techno responded, stomach sinking at the thought of someone attacking him while inside the object. No wonder Dream's right leg didn't form. Severe damage could limit how much of one's body can be formed. Especially if it's damage to his object. He wouldn't be surprised if his torturer had intentionally aimed at his leg in hopes this would happen.
Dream was silent, eyes moved to the side as Techno's own flickered over Dream, trying to find anything else that was missing or damaged. Except for a missing ring finger, he didn't find much to be concerned about. Scars of course. Plenty. One or two in the form of a familiar smile, some burn scars and others from an axe or knife. But nothing else that would impact Dream's ability to move much.
After many more ticks, Techno clapped his hands. "So, anyway. I made some food if you want. Fish with spinach. It should still be warm."
His roommate squinted at him. "I'm fine. I can get some myself."
"Sure. Sure but I may have made too much, so really, you'd be doing me a favour," Techno continued, hoping for an agreement. And he got one, although reluctant and with obvious scepticism.
He didn't let that dissuade him though and put some of the food on a plate before noticing a slight shake in Dream's hands. "Wanna sit at the table?"
Dream looked to it before shaking his head. "Alright. Hope I didn't salt it too much though. Phil says I sometimes go overboard." He also for some reason had always accompanied it with a wink which Techno was still confused by, though that detail didn't feel important.
After sniffing at it and still looking for something off, Dream took a bite and then another. He didn't keep track of how many but it turned out too much as it didn't take long for Dream's face to turn pale and attempt to rush outside only to reach a window and promptly throw up.
Ah right. Stomach's not used to that much.
-----
Carefully, Techno cut more and more slices of wood away. The form was slowly becoming recognisable much to his satisfaction, but there was still a decent way to go. Once finished, it would fit neatly next to the wolf, crow and pig carved from the same material. After that, he already had another one in mind.
The fire in the chimney flickered softly. It crackled regularly from the bits of water in the wood which was unavoidable. The warmth helped well with the current weather. A snowstorm ruled outside. Not the strongest snowstorm that Techno had ever seen but still not one that should be underestimated.
Looking over to Dream, who sat on a couch near the chimney, he was somewhat glad for the weather. The guy was determined to get out and do whatever stupid thing he had in mind. And that was when his body hadn't even fully healed to its capability.
Not to mention the appointment he had booked for Dream to get him a prosthetic because let's be honest, Techno doesn't have the medical and mechanical knowledge required to get Dream a good one. Not even a decent one. There was maybe one or two people on the server who could make a good one, but Techno didn't trust either of them with this.
Safe to say, Techno wasn't entirely comfortable with letting Dream out and about. Not until he at least healed more. And even then he hoped the guy would stick around. Continue the roommates arc and all. Nothing else. Chat shut up.
In his slight distraction, he slipped and the carving knife cut him on his finger. It luckily didn't get deep, piglin skin is rather sturdy, still blood exits. He put the wood and tool to the side and went to get a cloth to stop the bleeding. When he turned from the cabinet where he got the cloth though, Dream stood right there, eyes fixated on where the wound is, the cut looking like a crack in metal.
"Let me look at it." Confused, Techno did.
Dream held his hand and Techno could feel his face heating up for some reason. His friend leaned down with his head so close that he could feel the heat of his breath as he whispered something Techno couldn't make out. A tick and he felt the skin there tickle. The wound glowed green as it sealed shut. Stunned he kept staring at where there was just a wound but now there was nothing. Only a small faint scar that's barely noticeable.
"How did you-"
"The book didn't just have the secrets to revival." Techno glanced up and saw Dream also still looking at where the wound was. He shortly lifted his head before averting his gaze and moving back to where he was with the help of the stick one of the woods wolves - one that for some reason loved to steal Techno’s glasses - gave him.
-----
It started with the wolves barking outside.
They didn't bark when it was a friend. Every time Niki, Ranboo, Phil or Dream entered this area, the dogs didn't bark. That was the first sign for them to get ready.
They had discussed this, him and Dream. Techno would go out, armour and weapons at the ready. Dream would try to hide somewhere in the house where he hopefully won't be found while Techno tries to get them out of this with the least amount of bloodshed. As much as Techno wanted to get back at Quackity and Sam, killing them could lead to more unwanted attention from the rest of the server, especially if they got confirmation that Dream was still with Techno instead of on his own somewhere. Right now, the priority was safety.
So Dream hid himself away covered by Steve. As embarrassing as the position seemed, Dream figured neither of the two looking for him would risk angering a bear just to see or get what seemed to be in its grip.
If he had a mouth, he would have stopped breathing when he heard Quackity enter. And he knew those footsteps even if they sounded more unsure. He also knew the ones that followed and noted a third one he expected missing. Just Quackity and Technoblade then. Sam probably stayed outside in case Dream tried to sneak away.
The two inside were talking. Dream knew they were talking but he couldn't focus on the words. He tried to. He needed to know but he couldn't. Mind
A screech cut through his haze. For a second he worried that it was Techno before registering the next words. "Technoblade, get your fox off of me, dude. Get your fucking fox off of me."
Dream tried to peek and sense what was going on and got a rough image. A dark blue figure shook in pain as a smaller, way smaller green one tore into his arm that had reached up to a bookcase.
"Aw, come on. They just want to play. Ain't that right, Em?"
"It's literally biting me. Get it off of me." Dream had to admit, that fox was determined. She didn't let off despite the way Quackity shook his arm. Good fox.
Blood was soaking through his sleeves when one of the wolves came from behind and bit into his leg, mauling on it multiple times. It didn't go missing on him that it's the same he lost and he wondered for a second if the hound knew.
If it wasn't for his current mouthless state, Dream would have burst out laughing when another one bit into the intruder. For a second, he thought they might be close to actually kill-
Quackity's form poofed, leaving his items behind. He heard a cackle from somewhere in the room. He'd have thought it was himself if he could make sounds. Instead, it was Technoblade who seemingly couldn't hold it in himself.
"Well done, Em and June. Well done, you two." Techno praised them. Tears crinkled at the edge of his eyes as he petted them.
He stood back up properly and went to the door only to come back rather quickly. "Welp. Sam dipped too. Probably scared of the big fearsome fox and hound. Probably helped that Ravyn was outside too." Techno's gaze stayed on the outside a bit more. Likely making sure that no one was there anymore. "Dream, you can come out. Pretty sure we are not gonna have to worry about them for a bit."
Dream did so after a few more ticks. Forming around the book again. However, he realised a moment too late that it left him stuck with Steve, who seemed to like holding him. "Um. Techno. A little help?"
"You know what? Nah. Who am I to take my emotional support bear's emotional support war criminal."
"Techno!" Dream tried to wiggle out of the soft arms, only to be held closer. He would have tried again if not for the snout moving against him as the wolf that still had blood around its snout was starting to lean against him. Same for the fox as they seemed to cuddle together against him.
Moving would be impossible now without accidentally hitting one of them.
Reluctantly, Dream gave up, sagging in Steve's hold while Techno brought in two more wolves. One snowy one and one woods. Both joined the animals already resting and Dream didn't need to look up to see Techno smirking at him.
"When I get out, I'll get my revenge."
"Sure you will, bud. Sure you will. What do you want for dinner?"
"...Broccoli Gratin."
-----
Dream settled back in the same place on the couch the next day. Once more idly watching as Techno carved a new wooden figure that Dream could make out to be a cat. It looked good already. Incredibly so. He had spotted the wooden figures on his shelves before and debated asking but never did.
"Whe-" His voice cracked. He moved past. "When did you start with wood carving?"
"Uh. Probably around eight months ago? Give or take. Been wanting to get into it a few years ago. Didn't really get to. Stuff got in the way. Lost the books teaching woodcarving. Got called to war. You know, usual things?"
"Heh. Yeah. Usual."
Dream's gaze shortly went up to Techno's eyes. They were blue. Like the sky but, more colourful. Like aquamarine. Like the gem on his sword.
"You know, I wasn't always the spirit of a sword." Techno at some point voiced. "It's been... roughly about a hundred years ago I think. I was in an arena, one of their best champions even if their treatment of me never really matched it. The audience would cheer whenever I fought, not that it mattered to the owners besides the money it brought them." He huffed. Dream stared, unsure how to respond.
"I was good enough that I caught a certain god's attention. The Blood God loves to see fights and apparently, he loved to watch mine. So much so that he gave me a blessing." The last word was accompanied by a tone he couldn't pinpoint. Dream glanced back down to the figure the other was still carving.
"That night, I became immortal. Not to be killed unless the sword he gave me was shattered beyond repair. It was also the night I became free. So both immortality and freedom. Pog if you ask me." Techno seemed to be carving details like the eyes and mouth now. He was silent after that. It took only a few more ticks for Dream to open his mouth instead.
"I made a deal with Schlatt. He got protection and an army, I got the book. Then one moment I was there, burning a copy of the book, the next, I was like this." It was less than Techno told him. But Techno didn't need to know about the experiments. He didn't need to know about Punz and how somehow only he became the spirit of the book, not his mercenary.
"Huh. Always thought you were a bookworm. You sure you don't write any fanfics?"
"Oh my god, no." Dream immediately responded.
"That was a suspiciously quick denial," the piglin joked.
"No, it's not. What?" A smile tugged at his lips, tail swishing back and forth behind him.
"Come on. What's your pen name? I promise I won't tell a soul." Techno grinned.
"No, I'm leaving." Dream said as he planned to stand up, only for one of the wolves to settle on top of him.
"Yes. Good, Yawn." Techno encouraged.
"No, No. Bad." Dream tried to discourage it to no avail.
"Well. Guess you're stuck now. Now where were we?"
Dream leaned his head back, scratching the spotted wolf with one hand.
-----
Dream couldn't sleep. It was nothing new. He spent plenty of nights awake either by choice or inability. Usually, though, he didn't need to figure out a way how to get out of another person's arms.
Slowly, he started shifting into a mouse, making himself small and light enough that hopefully, Techno wouldn't wake. He stepped along the bedsheets and down onto the floor. He gave his sleeping roommate one last glance before changing to a screech owl and quietly flying himself down the ladder and through an open window. Once on the porch, he shifted back.
It was cold. Freezingly so. He didn't have the cloak. Or anything really fitting for the temperature.
Just a few hundred ticks and then he'd go back in.
Before the time passed though, he heard the floorboards inside creak and just a few ticks later, a cloak found its way around him and a certain piglin next to him.
"Nice night, isn't it? The sky's so clear you can even see the stars and constellations like the Nightmare Eater and the Lava Walker." Techno spoke softly. Eyes up to the sky as well.
"Which ones are those?" Dream asked, not so much for the knowledge about stars and more just to hear Techno's voice.
His roommate pointed to different stars while leaning closer to Dream, their heads next to each other. "This one's Nightmare Eater. A phantom that feasted upon the nightmares of gods till they had enough and punished it by turning it into stars, never to get another meal." He pointed to another cluster. "And that's Lava Walker. A strider who had helped a young adventurer get help from his friends after falling down from a great height in the nether. The injury could have caused his death if the strider didn't get them. As thanks, the lil guy got immortalised."
Dream looked from the stars to Techno, seeing them reflect in his eyes. A sparkle in his blue eyes that entranced Dream. He didn’t even notice their hands being intertwined.
Techno turned his head down, looking back at Dream after noticing his silence. His eyes flickered to his lips.
They stared at each other as the moon shone down on them.
With the stars as only witnesses, Techno kissed Dream and Dream kissed back.

Break the Ice
Summary: Dream and Techno go ice skating. It doesn't go as well as hoped. (1,4k words)
Written for Day 1 of the rivals duo week. Several days late .-.
---
Snow was gently falling from the sky when they headed out.
The canal near their home had frozen over and was confirmed as safe to step on. Something that Dream took as a sign that they needed to go out and skate.
Dream, as he had been told by the man himself, had loved to skate once he learned how to at 13. Both on ice and on wheels. He had used to do it regularly, switching from inline to ice skates along the seasons. Then the accident had happened.
This would be the first time since then that Dream went on the ice again and heck, Techno would take anything that gets Dream out of the house. Even if it's something the piglin has no idea how to do.
Like, at all. He never really got taught how to do any kind of skating. Not that he had any interest in it. Horses were more his area. Like Carl, his trusty steed and the reason he was glad, he had managed to find a Realm that allowed bigger than usual pets.
Dream even once, despite no prior experience, joined Techno on horseback riding despite being hesitant at first. (And Techno still remembered the surprise at which horse Dream connected with. Spirit was notorious for disliking and distrusting all people with very very few exceptions. But they had still come up to Dream when they were looking for a horse that would let him ride. They had pushed their muzzle into his hand.)
So now they were here, staring out at the ice occupied by quite a good number of people. It was causing a slight nervousness in him. Out of instinct nearly, he glanced at Dream who still looked excited and for once, not discouraged by the amount of people there.
They found a good place to settle down with their few items before preparing to get onto the glassy area.
The bunny hybrid was the first to have his skates on him, while Techno took longer. He couldn't suppress the slight chuckle when Dream started moving back and forth, like a bundle of energy that was waiting to be released.
At last, Techno finished tying and securing his own skates and with shaking legs, he carefully raised himself up. He felt wobbly, unstable. A hand was held out to him and he grabbed it without thought.
“Come on, I got you,“ Dream reassured him with words that reminded him of something he had told him when teaching the teletubby horseback riding. „Let's get down.”
Techno nodded. “Yup. Just down a bit, onto the ice. On thin, very thin and sharp blades.” His nervousness was obvious to the point that even Chat tried to comfort him a bit while at the same time calling him Scaredyblade.
“Hey, you've got this. It's just a small way down. A bit steep but with the amount of layers you insisted we put on, we won't get too hurt even if we fall.”
“Hey, I’m not the one who gets cold quicker than an enderman teleports from water.“
“It’s not my fault I only got fur genes for my legs and parts of my arms.”
“Skill-issuse.”
“What for sk-”
“Aaaanyway.” Techno looked out over the ice again. The ones already on the ice seemed to do well. Meanwhile his legs shook like a newborn deer's and he wasn’t even off the stable earthy ground yet. He can already see himself falling multiple times. Chat's excited for it, already spamming Technofall.
Dream huffed before moving closer to the ice. “Come on, I got to teach you so we can race.”
Techno followed. “So I can take first place like with the riding.”
“More so I could leave you in the dust. Or rather snow. Can’t let you win all the time. Wouldn't make me a good rival if i did, would it?”
“Like with farming.” He joined in on the teasing as they got near the ice. “Or cooking. Or-”
“Hey! I can bake, unlike you.”
“For now. Just wait till I get Niki to teach me again. No more burned kitchens from me then.”
“Only burned cookies.”
They reached the slippery surface. He stood firm, unlike Techno who still felt a bit of a shake go through him.
With only a slight balancing issue at the start, his friend stepped onto the ice. “Wanna come on now or show you how to move a bit first?”
“Show me first. Gotta give me Teacher Dream Rosental after my amazing job as Teacher Technoblade”
“Alright so. The way I got taught is, you take one foot and sorta step forwards to the side, put weight on it and let it carry you for a bit before doing the same with the other foot in the other direction. And then just repeat. That's the basic. See.” Dream moved, acting out his explanation as blue eyes tracked his movements.
“Okay. Okay. Noted. How do you slow and stop?”
“For that, okay. I- uhm. I don't actually know if there's a known best tactic but I usually just, move both legs inwards. It takes a bit to properly slow down but it works and at some point I let the skates meet and stop.”
Techno nodded. “Okay, got it got it. Inwards, meet, stop.”
“Yeah. Honestly, might have been better to go to a proper ice rink instead. There are railings on the side you could use to help with stopping.”
Techno huffed. “You think?”
Dream grinned and held a hand out to him once more. Techno took it, letting Dream help get on the ice without immediately slipping on it. He stood as Dream moved a slight bit back and encouraged him to move. His steps were much more choppy. No real gliding happening.
They continued for a bit with Dream trying to move as slowly as possible when showing him the steps again for guidance.
It didn't take many more ticks till Techno shook his head. “I think I might move to the bench for a bit.”
“Ah fair. You did do good so far.”
“Really, how?” He frowned, wondering if Dream was joking and he just failed to pick up on it. He still couldn't glide correctly so why-
“You didn't fall yet. When i first stepped on the ice, I fell two times. Maybe three or four. Most fall. You didn’t.” Dream smiled at him and Techno smiled back.
“Thank you and have fun. If you need a bottle or something, yell.”
“Will do, bacon.” He skated off before Techno could retort.
With careful steps, the piglin headed back up to the bench, settling down and switching out the skates with his boots.
When he looked back out to the ice,Techno saw how graceful and quick as well Dream moved across it. Much more secure in his movements than the shaky steps Techno did. He couldn’t suppress the grin even if he wanted to.
His rival was in his element, racing across the lake and passing others rather easily. He had to take him more often to this. Maybe even on ice skating rinks when the waters weren’t frozen anymore. Or maybe to inline-skating. It was similar enough. Maybe at some point he could get close to it.
He pulled out his camera, turning it on and lifting it so it had a good view of his friend. The bunny hybrid was gliding along, still, turning back around when he reached the end of the frozen area. It made for a good recording despite the still-falling snow.
Then from one second to the next, Dream was falling as the ice broke beneath him and dropped him into the water.
He barely stopped himself from jumping in after him. If the ice cracked beneath Dream, no doubt it would do so under him and both under the ice would help no one.
Instead, he took over some of his clothes and tied them together. He had to get Dream out before he drowned. The guy wasn't a great swimmer from what he remembered. The cold wouldn't make it any easier.
He edged as close to the hole in the ice as he dared, calling after Dream as he threw in the clothes.
Techno held on tight, only pulling it up once he felt someone tug at it. Another pair of hands joined in. And another. Soon something green breached the surface and only once they got him further out, did Techno pull his friend into his arms.
Dream was wet and so incredibly cold. He heard someone say they called emergency services. Distantly, his hearing already picked up the sirens of an ambulance while he tried to take some of the soaked clothes off of Dream and replace it with some extras he had packed all while holding him as closely as possible. Just a bit longer.

Deeper Down
While Dream was inside the prison, the world had expanded. Now, weeks after breaking out and staying with Techno, he discovers some of the expansion and even Techno finds something new.
Rivals duo gift exchange present for @sunny-child-of-the-sky, hope you enjoy!
Thank you, @rivalsduogiftexchange, for hosting. And happy holidays to everyone!
Water was dripping down from the ceiling. It was a new sight to some extent. New in this context with this liquid. An unknown purple liquid dropping from obsidian is familiar. A translucent one from stone less so.
There were many times where he went mining. Be it at the start with his friends as they began making their home or later as he gathered resources late into the night. None of the caves he remembered had these sharp pointy stones. Nor did they have this faint glowing light in the distance.
Despite his anxieties, one look towards Techno made him relax. The piglin regarded the surroundings with a relaxed smile on his face as he went further ahead.
Swallowing the spit that had started collecting, he tried to copy Techno and relax a bit as he sped up. They were far enough down that even if someone followed them, they would have noticed by now or it would take them a good while to actually reach them.
It should be fine. It will be fine.
And then he saw where the light came from. Green. A lot of softer greens hanging from the roof of the cave in the form of vines. Golden glowing berries hung on the vines, giving it all a soft look. More of the grass colour was on the ground, covering the floor and sprouting little plants that reached to about his hips. It got broken up here and there by clay and water. Some of the plants carried vibrant pink flowers. It was beautiful in all meanings of the word.
Dream didn't even notice how mesmerised he was till he hit something soft but sturdy and his companion let out a chuckle. "Something caught your attention?"
"What is this?" Dream asked, eyes still on the surroundings instead of on Techno.
"This is a lush cave. Beautiful, ain't it?"
The agreement was left unsaid, obvious alone in the awe that Dream's eyes held.
A splash sounded from one of the more distant pools of water. While both of them perked up on it, Techno was the first to get closer. "Come here. There's something I think you might like."
Dream stepped closer, tail swishing behind him as his view of the pool got bigger and bigger. Once he got near enough, he bent down a bit, curious at the sight of an unfamiliar mob.
"Axolotls. The cutest little predator," the piglin whispered from next to him, quieter as if to not disturb the tiny creature. "Home here in the lush caves and transportable in buckets."
Sinking down to his knees, the shifter took a closer look. Green glowing eyes were nearly fixated on the pale pink skin that reminded him of the person next to him. The animal noticed him and looked up a bit.
"Hey," Dream muttered as he lowered one hand closer to it. It swam closer to it. Slowly brushing along his hand which then turned to pet it a bit. A faint chirp sounded from it as it nuzzled his hand. Another one in pale blue and pink colours plopped into the water and also neared him. Its skin looked an awful lot like the snowy landscape he had been living in since he got out of prison.
"Seems like they like you. Wanna take ‘em with us?" A bucket was held out to him. He looked back and forth from the axolotls to the bucket before shaking his head.
"Better not." It would just end up dead again. If not by someone using it against him then probably by his inability to care for it. He knew nothing about these animals. He might consider it after he learned a bit about them but even then. He doesn't want them to get hurt just cause they are his pets. Just cause he made the mistake of growing attached and showing it.
"Suit yourself. I've been working on an aquarium for a bit. Just needed to find of 'em again." Pink hooves filled the bucket with water before guiding the axolotl inside, doing the same with the second one. It looked fitting. Two pinks so similar and yet so different with one being from the Nether and one finding its home in water. Adding a drop of whitish-blue to it
Backing out of his kneeling position, Dream glanced once more over this section of the cave before following Techno once more.
They continued on further down, encountering several other more familiar mobs on the way. None were a problem to deal with. Even if Dream's iron left leg was sometimes still rubbing uncomfortably against the stump.
More ores were found as well. Iron and gold mostly but also some diamonds.
He missed this. Ventures out into the mines to explore and gather resources, side by side with someone else who didn't aim to stick a sword into you. A way to spend time together, prepare for possible future problems, collect material for gifts and for Dream specifically, see how much progress he made since the prison break. Endurance, strength and speed all have improved. His balance with the new prosthetic had also gotten better.
Once they reached a dead end in their path they started mining down the wall in front of them with Techno leading the front and Dream working on making the path wider in case they left this way too. They kept this rhythm going until another cave opened up and by the first look, it was big too. Not that Techno could make out much based on his squinting.
With night vision to his advantage, Dream went further along first, taking note of a structure made from the same stone the cave was, just formatted into bricks and other forms. Here and there a soul lantern lit it up but with the darkness of the area, it hardly made a difference.
"This is... new." Techno noted, looking at the unfamiliar surroundings just as Dream did.
Their footsteps echoed despite the vastness. Then they heard a tick or something. Something that sounded similar to a creature chirping in low tones. It was immediately followed by a screech. Both stopped. This was loud enough that many blocks away it could still be heard, potentially even through the walls. They suspected a trap. Expected something or someone to pop out from somewhere and go for the kill. But as they waited and waited, nothing showed up.
More careful of the sound he made now, Dream sneaked closer to where he heard both.
The floor changed from dark greys to an even darker teal with spots of brighter bits that seemed to glow in and out. Then there were tentacles? It looked like tentacles, wiggling around in a pack of four. At the same time as he heard someone drink a potion behind him, the tentacles glowed and emitted that same sound as before. Further away from it came the screech. with glowing circles disappearing into the air.
It was strange. New. Dream stepped closer to the screecher. A similar-looking block but instead of four tentacles. it looked like it had four bones going up at the corners. Inside swam two teal-coloured souls in circles, reminding him of the pattern that one pool in Kinoko Kingdom had.
Curious, he started to reach with one hand inside it only to have it gripped by another and pulled away.
"Just cause it's not lava, doesn't mean you should just stick your hand in it," Techno whispered close to his ear, likely to avoid another screech. "I doubt you know what it might do and I'd prefer not to find out unless we are prepared for anything."
"Fine." Dream gave in. Techno let go and they continued with slow and quiet steps, both fascinated by the surroundings.
There was a chest in one of the structures but no doubt would it cause another screech so they left it for now.
Something like a hallway greeted them next. Stretching for a good while in both directions. They went up the steps to find wool, surprisingly enough. Not even carpet but completely wool on the floor. It was soft and as both quickly realised it was quieting their steps.
An idea popped into Dream's head on how they could still reach what was inside the chests. And by the looks of it, Techno realised as well.
"Let's first check this place out some more. Just to make sure no one is here." Dream nodded.
More darker stone, deep slate as Techno once picked up, was following as well as the strange alien patches of what Dream guessed, for now, was some kind of plant. A plant that could detect sounds and let out screeches.
Maybe he could sneak some into his inventory later to bring to Punz.
Maybe he could come back here with Punz at some point. Or maybe even Phil. This looked like something Phil would be interested in. Heck, maybe he even knows something about that.
At some point, their path dissolves. Ruins of the rest of the hallway scattered across the floor with some noticeable dark oak planks and what looked like basalt that piqued Dream's curiosity again.
Nothing in comparison to the blue flames beneath a giant frame that he spotted in the distance though. He stopped where he stood and turned to his companion. "Techno, look." The piglin did, following where Dream was pointing to.
"Huh. You know. This place is starting to look more and more like the old place of a ritual. Crumbled in structures. A strange unknown something that looks almost like it infected the place. And now this. Do you think they did sacrifices? Maybe they're another eggpire just in blue."
"What? A blue eggpire?" Dream looked around again. He didn't know much about the eggpire. It seemed to get worse after he was locked inside. Punz and Techno explained a good chunk of what had gone on in that area but with one of them having been somewhat mind-controlled and the other one being rather clueless most of the time on what is going on, it wasn't as detailed as Dream might have preferred.
"Exactly. Exactly. Hey, maybe they had a rivalry. The red cult versus the blue one. Who will win? An ongoing rivalry for centuries until red gained the upper hand."
"And each one's leader once had a kid that fell in love with the other." Dream joked with him.
"Romeo and Juliet-style. Just hopefully with more impulse control. Fanfic material right there, I gotta say."
"Oh my god." They headed further along towards what looked like another hallway, partly crumbled and with arches over the floor and candles on the side. Burning candles. Though it didn’t look like they could melt.
Up another flight of stairs and they reached the giant frame with the soul fire beneath it. More of these tentacle things were there and even more candles.
His leg once hit too loudly on the floor and made an echo of clicks start. A light from above quickly caught his eye as he spotted a redstone lamp that went out a second later.
So plants that can give off a redstone signal. Sam would like this-
Sam. Could this be a trap built by him? It could be but also if he knew of sound-detecting redstone-signal-emitting plants, he would have already used them in the prison. Not only now.
More time was spent exploring. Some of the buildings repeated with differences in details and how much they had already started wasting away. At some point, they had started collecting the wool and covered the screecher and the tentacles in it. Or rather tendrils as Techno had corrected him.
"Tendrils are part of a plant. Tentacles are like those things on the squids, part of an animal."
At some point, they had decided to separate for a small while. With no threat so far spotted, not even mobs, they deemed it safe enough for each to be alone for a bit.
It was just Dream's luck that he headed in the direction where this area seemed to stop and mobs did spawn. Specifically skeletons and zombies. Usually not a huge threat but the screecher still made him uneasy so he tried to keep quiet. Something the mobs didn't try.
A zombie stumbled too far down. Screech.
A skeleton shot an arrow right next to one of those tendril things. Screech.
But unlike before, it didn't stay at the screech and silence after. Instead, the floor started rumbling as if someone had lit TNT beneath it. A deep groan seemed to echo endlessly. His vision shrunk. Darkness ebbed in right as he spotted something crawling out of the ground from near where the last screech was.
Pounding. A heartbeat so loud he could hear it clear as day but he wasn't sure if it was his own or the creature's that seemed to glow out of its chest in beat with the thumping. Or rather souls. Those were souls. Souls in the middle of an open ribcage inside of a giant creature the same colour as whatever had spread in this place.
Frozen, he stared as the creature walked towards the skeleton. More groans echoed as tendrils on the side of its head were somewhat wiggling. There seemed to be no eyes. Not that they would help much in this darkness. The creature stumbled along until it was next to the skeleton, the two arms were raised before rushing down, the skeleton instantly crumbling.
Without removing his gaze from it, he carefully stepped away. Maybe he could create enough distance to it that it won’t realise he’s there. There are still some mobs its focus was pulled to.
He succeeded with it surprisingly. Once the mobs were gone, it only took a short while for the giant to also retreat. Somehow it crawls back underground, presumably till another screecher alarms it.
Hopefully, Techno has no-
He jumped back when something brushed his shoulder, only to realise that it was the man in question. Luckily the floor was wool and he had long since been trained to not make any sounds even if it would have been reflex.
“You alright?”
Dream nodded, not trusting his voice to be quiet enough. He looked for the nearest way out and pointed with his head to it, looking at Techno in what hopefully came across as the right message.
“You wanna get out? Sure. After whatever you just summoned, probably the safest option. Well, then it’s goodbye to the creepy cult site.”
The way out was luckily smooth. No screechers or tendrils were near as blocks were placed and destroyed. They even managed to come across a section of the cave they were in before which sped things up. A small bit. Before they got lost again.
Moonlight shone down on them as they finally exited the cave system.
Deciding to take a break before they headed back, they started a small campfire with freshly gathered wood while they also made a bit of a barricade so they wouldn’t be disturbed.
Techno placed some meats on one of the logs on the campfire. “Having any hunger yet?” Dream wasn’t sure and as if his friend could already read his mind, he settled on placing a few more meats. “I’d say we chill here till the sun rises. Can’t take too long based on where the moon is.”
At that, he looked up and spotted said object rather quickly thanks to its current position in the middle of the sky.
“What was that giant thing?” Dream asked after a bit more silence as the meat cooked.
“The thing that you summoned?”
“I didn’t summon it! Some zombies and skeletons wouldn’t stop making noise.”
“Sure, sure. And these skeletons and zombies were also the reason it didn’t attack you?” Techno raised an eyebrow with a smirk on his face.
“Yes! Because I was being quiet and sneaking away while they continued making noise.”
“Mhm. Sure. I believe you. Just like your house that is totally 100% real.”
“Oh my god.” The exasperated tone devolved into a few chuckles all while Techno grinned before looking as if he just remembered something.
“Speaking of mobs, how much inventory space do you have left?”
“What does one have to do with the other?”
“I'm getting to it, man.”
“Uhm. About five slots. Why?”
“Pog. Would you mind hanging onto the two axolotls? My inventory’s kinda full and I could use a few empty slots.”
Dream squinted at him. “Sure.”
“Perfect. Here ya go.” The two buckets got handed over to him. Both axolotls idly swam in their temporary home until they got home.
“Also, all my creativity with name-giving has been sucked dry by my hound army and chat is not being helpful right now. You wouldn’t happen to have any ideas on what to name ‘em, would ya?”
The suspicion aimed at the piglin and possible hidden goals from this didn’t lower. Deciding it’s best to just play along, however, he looked back down at the two that didn’t seem disturbed by his presence.
“Coral,” he uttered, petting along the pink axolotl’s surface. “and Spectre.” The cyan axolotl bumped into the other before swimming along his hand. Dream pet the other with his left hand to prevent a potential fight while a chuckle left him.
“Coral and Spectre,” Techno repeated the names while looking at the scene. “Maybe chat would have had better name ideas.”
“EY!”

Goodnight Stories
Years after the prison break Technoblade and Dream lived together far away, healed and raised two kids together. One evening, they start telling bits of their life to their kids in the form of a fairy tale.
Story for Day 7 (Fairytale AU - healing) of the Christmas Dreamnoblade Event by @alterdnbweek. A bit late but i really wanted to finish this.
Also on Archive of our own.
"Once upon a time, there was a rabbit. The rabbit was a very social but lonely creature. It yearned for the company of others. Years went by as it hopped around, discovering new places and befriending other animals.
Overjoyed at its gained company, it made a burrow. A big burrow that could house all of its friends and more. At first, it was just them, eight friends who worked on improving their home. They built and hunted and joked around. Late at night, when the moon was high and their bodies grew too tired, they'd huddle together in one warm, soft pile of fur, limbs, and feathers.
The rabbit was happy with its friends. It invited more people, hoping to make more friends.
More space was carved out. More tunnels were dug out. Space was made bigger to fit the newcomers. While the rabbit worked to improve its home for everyone and as most animals enjoyed their time together, two animals created the first cracks. They stole other's possessions to retrade them. They claimed parts of what was home for everyone and made it only for themselves. The racoon and anteater had gathered wood and black stone to barricade others from entering at all.
Once news reached the rabbit, it was unhappy. It came to the two troublemakers and asked them to stop. They refused and lured more in and soon the rabbit's home was split into two sides. Those rallied against the rabbit, who got pulled in by the charm of the anteater, and those still by the rabbit's side, who wanted to help him stop the community from splitting apart.
Things spiralled. Fights became more regular. Actions more extreme.
Frightened and threatened and yearning for how things had been before, the rabbit with its wits made plans. With little regard for itself, it planned to get itself locked up. A false betrayal by the snow leopard was believed as real and successfully the rabbit found itself in another burrow guarded by another leopard. There it sat for months alone with few visits, fewer positive.
Until the duck came by. Longing for revenge and power and not feeling little, the duck would visit daily. It would paint the hole in red with the leopard's permission. Every day it would demand for a powerful item the rabbit had in its possession. Day after day until it was forgotten. Until it just wanted to feel the power over the rabbit which once possessed a grace and punch like few others.
But the duck was foolish, never learning from its past mistakes no matter how often they caught up to him. With the stolen voice of the prisoner, it lured in the pig that had allied with the rabbit before and which the duck was enemies with. It had planned to trap two at once but instead, it summoned its own downfall. Because the pig didn't aim to get locked in for long and it had friends to rely on. Friends who aided its escape. And the pig-"
"-came back to save the rabbit and they kissed and happy end," interrupted a high-pitched voice Techno's tale. Techno playfully glared at his older kid, Vivian. The kid just smiled back from their laid-down position on the bed before yawning. If it wasn't for the tired look in their eyes and the slower movements, Techno would have thought it to be a mocking yawn.
"Well, some tales are more complicated than that." Even simplified, it was sometimes complicated to tell. The number of times Techno had to stop himself from going into detail at different places was at least getting less frequent now.
A body leaned against his from behind, head leaning on his shoulder. "You were close but not exact," Dream spoke from beside him, volume kept low to fit the evening and not destroy Techno's eardrums. "The pig did come back and save the rabbit. But the kiss wasn't until later as the rabbit, despite its admiration for the pig, had grown distrustful of every other animal around it."
"Even the piggy?" their younger kid, Aurora asked.
"Even the pig. Many of its friends had left him with the most recent being the leopard that had let the duck in. He figured the pig wouldn't be much different."
"The leopard was its friend? And it kept him there?" A devastated expression sat on her face. "Why?"
Techno looked to Dream, letting him decide how to tell it.
"Well, the rabbit while planning had assigned it the role of guardian. And it kept that role even as the rabbit was the one it had to guard. It had believed itself to be tricked by the rabbit. Lies and truths got muddled." He drifted off and Techno didn't need to look to see the look on his face. Instead, he gave three taps on his arm that got returned.
"But the piggy came back, right?"
"Yes." Techno ruffled her hair. "Fortunately, the pig is not one to leave others behind. It's way too cool for lame stuff like that."
"Fortunately," Dream agreed, placing a kiss on Techno's cheek. "Though the rabbit and the pig separated again once both were outside. Each had different tasks assigned by themselves. It would take another few weeks till they came across each other again.
The burrow made by the bunny and its friend had collapsed while it was locked away. Most managed to escape and make new burrows and houses. The rabbit claimed the tunnels it had been trapped in for itself. It was secure. It was familiar. To some extent, it was the plan.
Despite its hideout where few suspected it, it never stayed for long. Restlessly moving on with its plan, never stopping till the task was accomplished." Dream had moved from behind Techno to next to their kids, holding Aurora's hand gently with a soft smile despite the current tone of the tale.
Techno continued. "A snowstorm raged over the lands when the rabbit and pig met again. Snow had fallen for hours. Still, the rabbit hopped on, mind set on its goal. It went on and on. Until finally, the weather caught up to it. Body frozen and energy gone, the bunny lay there, pushed past its limits for too long.
The pig found it there, covered in snow and barely breathing. Dragged onto its back, the pig brought the rabbit to its home.
It took hours to wake. Hours in which the pig took care of its wounds, provided warmth and made meals. Like a miracle, the bunny survived. It stayed with the pig for a few days. The days turned to weeks and after so many months, exhaustion was slowly catching up.
Time spent with the pig was warm, and pleasant even if at times annoying. The rabbit would sleep next to the pig in its bed until it was their bed. Despite the fear and anxiety, feelings blossomed and seemingly normal day, they kissed. It would be the first of many exchanged between them as they stayed together. And they lived happily ever after."
"I hope they're both safe," Aurora whispered sleepily into her panda plushie.
"They are. Safe and happy, sweetie." Dream kissed her forehead as he rose from the bed and moved to its other side to do the same to Vivian's as Techno just did.
"What if the other animals catch the rabbit again?" They asked brows furrowed in worry for what is an imaginary animal for them.
"Then the pig and its friends will ensure the rabbit stays with them." Techno pipped up from where he kissed Aurora's head.
Both kids were sleeping as Dream and Techno left the room, closing the door gently behind them. Some more things were prepared for the next time before they too went to bed exchanging one last kiss for the day.

It’s the New Year where I’m from now if this is scheduled correctly and I have a drabble for dreblr. Happy New Years! May we get more c!dream content this year.
CW: small c!dream hurt, mention of blood
Fireworks light up the sky in some sections of the server as the new year commences.
Dream sits in a tree on a hill far away from most, hidden by the needles of the tree. It’s cold around him but he ignores it. It doesn’t matter.
He removes the cork of a potion with pink hue and downs it in a few quick gulps. The effect of the potion comes into effect only seconds after. Blood stops flowing, skin is healing leaving only another scar behind and blood that still needs to be cleaned. But at least the pain in the leg won’t stop him from moving at a quick pace again.
It’s annoying when this happens. When his mind shortly doesn’t register his surroundings correctly just because of some stupid lava popping nearby in a cave. It’s stupid that his mind automatically feels drawn towards it and his body moves accordingly. It’s annoying and he wishes his body and mind would stop acting so so idiotic. He should be fine. He is fine. He’s out. He’s free. He can finally continue with his plan and hope to make more progress the following year after it was already slowed down by his too long stay in the Vault. He should have made more backup plans. He needs more backup plans.
Another firework lights up the sky. It seems like it’s from somewhere in the main SMP. This time it’s yellow. The two before were red and orange. If that didn’t change much, he has a good guess as to who is sending the colourful rockets into the sky.
It reminds him of New Year celebrations from years before. The first one where he met Sapnap, Bad and Skeppy. It was nice. They had a bunch of fireworks Sapnap was more than happy to light up. Much to Bad’s dismay. The demon was always scared of Sapnap somehow hurting himself on accident while Skeppy was more relaxed. They also had smaller stuff to light up and some of the stuff looked similar to the items and tools hunters used. Just that it wasn’t intended to hurt anyone.
The next year, they were more. They were still a relatively small group. Smaller than the population of the server now. He still remembers how they decorated Callahan’s antlers and Bad’s horns, the fireworks made by Sam, the food and lemonade from Ponk, the decorations from Alyssa. He remembers hugging his two best friends.
He shakes his head. Once he’s done, they will be back to that. Once he finally reached his goal, the New Years celebration will be just like back then. He’s sure of that. His plan can still be continued. Just a bit more needs to be done till then.
Everything will be fine.
He’s fine.
Just as gracefull as before if you ignore the slight shaking, he jumps from tree to tree. His tail helps somewhat with keeping his balance better and when the vibration from his communicator it stops him from falling down at the unexpected feeling by grabbing onto a branch. This should only happen if a canon death happened or a certain someone messaged him and the latter shouldn’t happen as that person said that he would celebrate with other people partly to ensure their trust. But it is them.
Punz: Happy New Years, Dream. I’m in my tower alone right now so if you want to come over, feel free to.
And Dream considers it. His task for today are finished. He’s mostly just going around trying to learn all the changes that happened to the best of his abilities. New builds that appeared and stuff.
So he starts towards a new direction and halfway he shifts into a cat to remain undetected. His movements in the tree is still smooth and once he gets to the tower, he easily climbs it up with his claws.
Upstairs greets him the back of a white hoodie and he makes his presence known with a meow just in case someone else is nearby. Can never be safe enough.
Punz turns around and recognizes the glowing green eyes. One of the trait that stays no matter which form Dream takes. “Good idea.” His friend comments and once they are close enough, he walks onto their outstretched arm and up till he curls around their shoulders. His tail securely holds onto the arm. “Hope it’s comfortable.”
He nods. It is.
And they turn once more to the lightshow that is still happening outside until the last one is sent. And together they stare at the sky that lights up with colourful lights. Less than there once used to be. Less than there will hopefully be in the future.
