Inside a Coronavirus Evacuation: How 195 Americans Got Out of Wuhan

LOS ANGELES — This week, a group of strangers came together under a warm Southern California sun. They played ball with their children. They took jogs down tree-lined paths. They watched movies in the afternoon.

They also had their temperatures taken several times a day by medical personnel. And they are not allowed to leave the premises.

This makeshift community on a military base in Riverside, Calif., is made up of evacuees from Wuhan, the city in China that is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. The 195 people, including diplomats, infants, a football player and a theme-park designer, are among Americans who have managed to leave Wuhan since a quarantine was imposed.

The group arrived in the United States on Wednesday aboard the only chartered plane the State Department has flown to carry evacuees from China. As they passed time on the California base, waiting days until they can be cleared to leave by medical officials, some recalled unsettling, eerie final days in Wuhan and a jarring scene as the plane finally carried them away.

“It was surreal,” said Matthew McCoy, a theme-park designer, recalling the airplane crew members in hazardous material suits tending to passengers in masks. “They were trying to keep us calm, but they had these guys covered from head to toe taking your temperature. It felt like a C.I.A. cargo plane.”

To contain the spread of the virus, which has killed more than 200 people and infected thousands, people have been quarantined on a cruise ship, in hospital wards and on an island.

The group of Americans taken to the March Air Reserve Base in California were not officially quarantined, according to officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, though they were expected to wait on the base until medical testing could be completed. That process could take 72 hours or days longer.

Still, the C.D.C. said the authorities had the right to issue individual quarantines if necessary. Late Wednesday, hours after the plane arrived in California, a passenger tried to leave the base and was intercepted, local officials in Riverside County said. A quarantine order was issued to that passenger, a spokeswoman for the county said, because of “the unknown risks to the public should someone leave the base without undergoing a full health evaluation.”

With ample time on their hands, the passengers performed mundane tasks.

“I’m working out, watching movies, eating well,” said Jarred Evans, 27, a football player from New York City who has been living in Wuhan for two years, where he plays for the Chinese National Football League champions, the Wuhan Berserkers. He has also been through numerous checks. “I’ve never had my temperature taken so many times in my life,” he said.

From his room at an inn on the military base, Mr. McCoy said, “It’s not Club Med, but we’re fortunate to be here. I try to stay busy with my work, social media and my hotel workout regimen.” The Spanish-style hotel, which boasts stucco archways and a large courtyard, faces a verdant lawn.

After a stopover in Anchorage for refueling and medical screening, the passengers were greeted in California by experts from the C.D.C. who conducted medical tests and offered psychological counseling. Noses and throats were swabbed. Blood was drawn. Temperatures were taken, again.

Some recalled bleak, sometimes terrifying, last days in Wuhan.

Mr. Evans, a former quarterback at the University of Cincinnati, moved to Wuhan when he was recruited to play for the city’s American football team.

It had been a good season: His team had won the national championship in Shanghai on Jan. 8.

“I fell in love with Chinese culture,” he said, “and I got to be the face of American football in China.”

But when the coronavirus began spreading through Wuhan, Mr. Evans shut himself inside his apartment, stocked up with rice, noodles, eggs and disinfectant.

“I did exactly what every Chinese person did,” he said.

“I locked myself in. The city turned into a ghost town,” Mr. Evans said. But he felt isolated, he said, and his mother, back in the United States, was worried for his safety.

When he heard of a flight out of the country, he quickly filled out the online forms. An email from the United States Embassy in Beijing arrived, which read: “Space on this flight is extremely limited and we respectfully request that you not share details regarding the flight, including on social media.”

Mr. Evans learned that he was No. 171 on a flight that could accommodate about 200, he said. “I felt very lucky to be chosen out of all U.S. residents in Wuhan,” he said. Some Americans reported that they had tried to get a seat on the flight but were told there was no room.

Mr. McCoy, who lives in Shanghai, was in Wuhan working on a mall he is refashioning into a theme park when he got caught in the lockdown.

The atmosphere in the city was “just short of panic,” he recalled.

A former Marine who has run 12 marathons and stays in good shape, Mr. McCoy said he was convinced he had not contracted the virus. But he still took the outbreak seriously. He decided it was worth plunking down $1,100 for a one-way ticket to the United States.

When the American group left Wuhan, it had been made aware it would have to remain in an isolated location for at least 72 hours.

“This quarantine will occur for a minimum of 72 hours and may extend through 14 days or may be followed by conditional release with health monitoring,” said an email that he received before the flight. Mr. McCoy said that had not troubled most people. “Everyone was cool with that. We are trying to be patriots, trying to help,” he said. “We’re a captive audience here.”

On Thursday morning, their first full day back in the United States, the group downed breakfast burritos, juice and coffee. For lunch, they received a hearty taco salad with chicken.

An invitation slipped under the doors of the hotel rooms promised a “town hall discussion.” Federal health officials urged the group to remain on the base until receiving full medical clearance.

Now it was a matter of waiting.

Outside, there were refreshments, chips, cookies and toys. Scooters, footballs, soccer balls and Frisbees were available.

“People here have been really nice,” Mr. Evans said. “Everybody is in great spirits. Nobody is panicking or freaking out.”

There is no shaking hands or hugging, though, and most people were keeping on their masks.

Galway is a beautiful urban area in all of Ireland and is a popular destination for travellers. It is considered as one of the safest and most relaxed cities in Ireland. Galway is a charming city with a vibrant atmosphere, an ideal place to relax, explore different unique places. The pubs and traditional live music scene has made Galway the best entertainment city in Ireland.

Galway Places to visit: 

The fastest flowing river in Europe is The River Corrib. It may seem small and relatively normal, but it’s the fastest flowing river in all of Europe. So grab a seat by the banks and relax to the sound of rushing water.

The Aran Islands Galway: 

A trip to Galway is not complete without a visit to the Aran Islands. The Macnas Parade is a one-day parade that happens in October and is the main celebration of Halloween time in Galway.

Galway’s food scene includes incredible cafes, bistros, and fine-dining restaurants that are kicking the culinary hall right out of the park. Galway has a number of different cuisines on offer. The main genres are Spanish, Italian, and Irish.

There are hosts of outdoor activities in Galway to cater to all tastes.

Corrib Princess Cruise takes passengers along the majestic River Corrib and onto Lough Corrib along the line of the famous steamer which is the original trade route along the lakes.

Diving: Galway bay is clean with great visibility which is safe for diving. The nutrient-rich Gulf Stream has an abundance of marine life to see. The most popular diving location is in Connemare at Carraroe and Tra a Doilin, Killary harbor.

Shopping at Galway: 

The popular weekend market surrounding St.Nicholas Church in the center of Galway is colorful, aromatic, and a musical place to indulge. It is a great place to pick a truly unique gift.

Galway’s market: for some local flavor and a bit of a Bohemian vibe head to Galway market, a favorite of both tourists, and residents for produce, food, and crafts.

Salt hill beach is located on the edge of the Galway city. The beach is accompanied by a long promenade which is very popular with walkers and runners. There are three beaches connected to these beaches. The largest and most popular is the Ladies Beach where they have their very own hut serving coffee ice-cream and treats. Salt hill beach has been a blue flag beach and enormously popular in fine weather during summer.

Dog’s bay/Gurteen bay beaches: Dog’s bay is a spectacular horseshoe-shaped bay with more than a mile-long stretch of white sandy beach, similar Gurteen bay the sand is made entirely of fragments of seashells which give it a pure white color. Both these beaches are considered safe for swimming and other water sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing.

Other amazing beaches are White Strand Beach, Renvyle, Tra a Doilin Coral beach Carraroe, Dumhnach Beach, Inishbofin Island, Kilmurvey Beach, Inis Mor, and Silver Strand Beach.

Hotel Review: The Black Bull, Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, England - August 2021 - https://youtu.be/67mObI834uA . 

The Black Bull, Godmanchester is a 17th-century Coaching Inn located centrally on Post Street in Godmanchester. It is less than a 5 minute walk to the center of Godmanchester and a 15 minute walk to the centre of nearby Huntingdon. The accommodation is located above the pub that offers a good and varied menu as well as well-kept real ale and craft beers. Two of us stayed in an en-suite double room for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast basis, which cost a total of £170. This was a reasonably good price as accommodation options are limited in Godmanchester. The room was in good condition, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. The staff gave great customer service, allowing us an early check-in and a slightly late check-out. The food in the pub was superb. How to Explore One of Sweden’s Most Peaceful Nature Reserves

Sweden’s bucolic Varmland province runs from the heart of the country, at its eastern perimeter, out to the border of neighboring Norway, and it is known for its striking landscapes. In its center lies Glaskogen nature reserve, more than 65,000 acres of hilly terrain dominated by towering pine trees and speckled with 80-some different lakes. The area — home to Finnish immigrants who arrived in the late 16th century and were said to have brought with them only knives, axes and grains of rye — is exactly what one would imagine when thinking of the Scandinavian wilderness, with elk, deer and hares roaming freely.

Visitors typically begin their journey in Lenungshammar, a tiny village with just eight year-round inhabitants, where they can pick up maps and stop by the modest market for supplies. In the summer, outdoor enthusiasts often spend several weeks at a time in Glaskogen, hiking the serpentine paths, canoeing from lake to lake and sleeping under the open sky (there are also rental cabins available from the beginning of May through September). The sprawling nature reserve isn’t the region’s sole attraction: In the nearby municipalities, travelers can visit the home of the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, browse artisanal ceramics and textiles, and partake in fika, the Swedish coffee break.

Guesthouse Eleven

A 30-minute car ride from Lenungshammar, Guesthouse Eleven occupies a former elementary school that was constructed in the early 1900s. The three-story wooden building is now a family-friendly refuge with 10 classrooms-turned-bedrooms, which overlook either the picturesque standing waters of Lake Glasfjord or the adjacent forest. Ulvsby Herrgard

Situated in the town of Sunne (about a 90-minute drive from Glaskogen), Ulvsby Herrgard, a provincial manor, was built in 1630 and then designated as a vacation home for the Swedish Queen Kristina later in the century. Today, the 34-room hotel complements the serenity of Varmland with its neoclassical furnishings and flowered wallpapers; its restaurant is known for using hyperlocal produce and cheese made with milk from goats and mountain cattle. Located in the village of Klassbol, Kaffekvarnen is a locally beloved place for a fika, the traditional Swedish coffee and cake break, as well as lunch, thanks to the homemade bread and pastries, soups and open-faced sandwiches with toppings of shrimp or pickled herring. The building, which Kaffekvarnen has occupied since 1984, is itself inviting: A short bridge leads up to the front door of the erstwhile farmhouse, painted in the shade of rusty red seen throughout the Swedish countryside. kaffekvarnen.com

Vita Algen

In 2001, the chef Helena Neraal took over the Swedish-style tavern Vita Algen, in the former train-station building in the small town of Amotfjords; the restaurant is named for the statue of a white moose that greets diners from its roof. Here, Neraal and local food purveyors collaborate on a traditionally Scandinavian menu that changes seasonally, and ranges from foraged chanterelles over crayfish to venison. A published cookbook author, Neraal also runs her own small publishing house out of Vita Algen and hosts exhibitions of local artists’ work. vita-algen.com

For those who’d rather not stray too far from Glaskogen, Café Carl is a short walk from the nature preserve’s information center in Lenungshammar. The small wooden cabin was constructed using the slow-growing pine trees, slate and stone found in the surrounding forest. Klassbols Linnevaveri

The Swedish artisan Hjalmar Johansson established Klassbols Linnevaveri, a stone’s throw from the waters of Lake Glasfjorden, in 1920 after he found success selling the linens he made from local farmers’ flax. Today, third- and fourth-generation descendants of Johansson run the textile mill, producing eco-certified towels, bedding and napkins. The linens are even used by the Swedish royal family. Arvika Konsthantverk

About 20 miles from Glaskogen, near Kyrkviken cove, is Arvika Konsthantverk, Sweden’s oldest handicraft cooperative, which was founded in 1922. Stora Gla Lake

With its scores of splendid lakes, Glaskogen is an ideal place to explore from the seat of a canoe. Boats can be arranged at the information center in Lenungshammar, along with passes to use the picnic facilities and wooden shelters throughout the nature preserve; then head out onto Stora Gla Lake, just a short walk away. Rodvattensberget

Visitors can also tour the unfiltered Swedish wilderness on foot: There are more than 180 miles of hiking trails in Glaskogen. For a physical challenge, hike the two-day-long circuit to the top of Rodvattensberget (whose name means Red Water Mountain) where you’ll find a scenic view of the nature preserve. Selma Lagerlofs Marbacka

Selma Lagerlof, the Swedish author of “The Saga of Gosta Berling” (1891) and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1909, grew up 10 minutes outside Sunne at an imposing estate called Marbacka. Born in 1858, she lived there until she moved to Stockholm in her early 20s; she returned in 1907 and stayed until her death in 1940 (overseeing its reconstruction from 1921 to 1923), specifying in her will that Marbacka be preserved and opened to the public. Go for a guided tour to learn more about Lagerlof and her legacy, and take a stroll in the gardens before popping into the souvenir shop. marbacka.com
