Book Gist: Astrid Parker is trying to hold on to the one part of her life that hasn’t fallen apart in the last year: her interior design business. She gets hired to design the semi-famous Everwood Inn for their feature episode of Innside America, it’s a chance she can’t pass up. But of course, the whole thing has to go awry from the start, when she screams at a woman for spilling coffee on her ivory dress her first morning on the job… and that woman turns out to not only be her lead carpenter (and number one collaborator) but also an Everwood herself. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot. Now this project is a task of survival: get back in the good grace of Jordan Everwood, succeed at this redesign to keep her business afloat, and try not to have any sexuality crises along the way. She is only partially successful here.

Overall Review:

Pre-Read:

I tried to read this when it came out, and I made it like half way through before I put it down and just, forgot to pick it up again. I didn’t mean to DNF but it was not very encouraging to continue. It felt slow, I couldn’t feel the chemistry between Astrid and Jordan, and I still really didn’t like Astrid because of her in DGDC. This time around, I discovered that if I had continued reading literally 4 more pages, I would have finished the book that first time around, because it finally sold Jordan and Astrid to me at that point.

Astrid:

First impressions aside, I don’t think I was ever gonna LOVE this book, because I do have a general dislike for Astrid, both for who she is and how she was around Delilah (they are both at fault for their relationship, but I read a book in Delilah’s POV first, and Astrid was an ass for no reason so many times). That being said, while I would not be friends with her IRL, from a reader/writer perspective, she is a fantastic character. She is deeply flawed and actively acknowledges many of those flaws. She works to do better and her growth through this book is truly admirable. Watching her journey in trying to come out and to unlearn the habits she didn’t even know she had due to her upbringing, and all of her own thoughts she had to challenge in order to find her happiness… I am incredibly proud of her, she is a great main character. Still not gonna choose to spend any free time with her, but she served her purpose well in this book.

Jordan:

Jordan, I am obsessed with. I think the tarot thing wasn’t really made to fit. I think AHB was just really determined to include it, but don’t give Jordan enough connection in her backstory or personality to defend how invested she is in this tarot deck. We just know she bought it after Meredith left her, but we don’t know if Jordan had any prior interest in Tarot or anything similar, like astrology. It felt a bit forced, but other than that, I really did enjoy her. She’s brash and excitable and sarcastic and she’s on this journey of rediscovery too that is really fun to watch.

Meredith should just… move to somewhere international so they never have to see each other again, because while she’s valid to want a change in her life, she completely disregarded everything her wife did for her and everything that she felt for the sake of her “personal reawakening and need to find her destiny”. It was disrespectful of her relationship and of Jordan as a person. So, she can leave. You don’t get an I-had-cancer get-out-of-jail free card for being that much of an asshole.

Cast:

I wanted more of the Bright Falls cast tbh. Especially really defining the way the group works with Delilah in the mix, and Josh back for good. I wanted more Josh being subtly bullied and tested for his promise to stay and be around. I felt like it was way too quiet, when all Astrid had outside of work was her friends, but there was no routinely seeing each other, or weekly get together. There were a handful of group outings and one event. I needed a bigger fix than that. But seeing how Delilah filled in a space they were missing was so beautiful. Claire kinda lost all her personality, but she also had like 6 minutes of screen time in bookish terms, so I’m not necessarily surprised that’s what happened.

Plot:

The plot overall and the main conflict wasn’t super convincing for me. I feel like there wasn’t that much buildup of the risks involved for Astrid and Jordan if this doesn’t go well. But also, I feel like there hasn’t ever really been a risk of this not working out. There weren’t any actual opportunities or reasons to watch for presented to the readers about what could happen that would lead to the Reno failing, or the episode not airing. I knew they were worried, but i was never really worried for them. It just didn’t have the weight it needed to in my opinion. And it was so drawn out, but not in a slow burn kind of way, in a “I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel about this lady, and I’m so involved in my own issues I’m just gonna ignore this weird feeling and move on” kind of way. There wasn’t obvious chemistry to start, just conflict.

Other Comments:

What also probably didn’t help my perception of this book was some of the reviews I read on here before I started it (and I want to be explicitly clear that this is in no way the fault of any other poster or creator and I am in no way criticizing their opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and is allowed to put that on the internet. If I didn’t want to hear it, I wouldn’t read it. This is entirely on me).

A few people posted reviews about why they didn’t like AHB’s writing, and pointed out parts of her writing style and how she develops and includes her queer characters, and especially how she leans into stereotypes and performative allyship.

That’s a rough summary, I can’t remember exactly what was said. But those were the thoughts I had in my head while I was reading, and it did make me very sad, because there was a lot of Delilah and Claire from DGDC that I really related with and I felt very connected to the way that these characters were presented in that story. Reading APDF, I could identify a few points that could be interpreted as this kind of thing, but I didn’t feel that they were as a big a deal, I guess. So that also turned me off from the book at the start, so maybe (ironically) this book was doomed to be a disappointment for me.

All in all, it was a good book. Maybe not worth a reread, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy some of it. 😐

Review:

An interior designer finds herself facing off against the lead carpenter of her new project and that project might just involve falling in love. Astrid Parker is still fresh from her broken engagement and trying to just focus on her career. She is determined to be successful because being a failure is unacceptable. When she gets the opportunity to be a designer on the Everwood Inn’s renovation that will be televised, she knows this is her opportunity to not only distract from her failed love life but please her mom and save her own dying company. The one hiccup is that she did not plan for Jordan Everwood, the granddaughter of the Inn’s owner and the lead carpentor for the inn’s renovation who just happened to have spilled coffee all over Astrid earlier that day and whom Astrid proceeded to yell at.... and who just hates every modern design decision Astrid has made. Jordan wants to preserve the history of her family’s inn, even if the rest of her life is in shambles. Jordan is still dealing with the horrible breakup with her ex, she’s been a disaster trying to cling on to the past relationship and kind of failing at all her projects. Jordan is determined to prove to her family that she can fix Everwood Inn to be exactly what her family needs but that means going up against the very gorgeous but uptight designer who makes Jordan feel like she might be having a crush on her. Jordan and Astrid are constantly at each other’s throat but what starts off as tension soon turns into something more as the chemistry and heat between them only grows. Astrid and Jordan both have their own pasts but together they find that they just might be perfect for each other. This was such a fun and amazing read, I loved the chemistry between Astrid and Jordan and just how much they both want the best for the other. They’re both working on themselves and honestly, they were a really great pair and I can’t wait to see where the author goes next. This series is amazing and I loved getting to know more about Astrid!

First it was hard when you were nothing but a piece of plastic for humans to have their way with, then it was hard because your own kind looked down at you, and then in the end it had been hard because of the expectations everyone around you seemed to have. Carl had been the first one to change that in her life, and for that he had won hear heart completely.

She couldn't help but chuckle. He had a sweet-tooth her husband, and complete to addiction to coffee, so she couldn't really blame him.

"Well mustn't let your baked goods wait." "Our baked goods, I ordered one for you too."

"So how about you?" "What about me Uncle?" "Anyone in your life?" "Nah, not yet at least."

Istuki smiled, both Liam's kids had started calling them aunt and uncle a while back, and neither of them had protested, in many ways they did feel like and uncle and an aunt to the kids.

"Well, how about another cup of coffee instead of love life talk." "Sound perfect to me."

"Okay, I think it's time we all head home."

They had noticed how there were fewer people than before, and the lady who owned the shop had told them she would be closing soon.

"Mom?" "He can join us if he wants." "Cool!"

Madison just smiled, she was mostly just happy to see her daughter to happy with someone. That Ben was good for her and her worrying there was no doubt about.

"So you are completely fine with me dating your sister still?" "Yep, why would I not be?" "I seem to remember something about killing me?" "That was if you hurt her."

Although Ben was a little older than the twins, him and Hank would easily have gone as being the same age, specially with the way they all interacted with each other.

"I see you take after your me." "Mmm, and I wanted to give them some time to talk." "Who?" "My brother and Ben."

Madison smiled listening to her daughter play the piano. As she stood there, she realized this had pretty much been the perfect day.

On his way home from work, Toshi stopped by that little shop again. He had noticed he was selling some fruit he had never seen before and it had peaked his interest.

"So these grow into?" "Oh.. I don't know, I keep finding them around here every now and then, so I thought maybe someone would be interested." "Ah.. of course, we'll if it grows, I'll tell you what it is." "That would be amazing, no one has ever told me what they grow into!"

His words told Toshi that this might really be a very stupid idea, but he knew he could lock the door to where he would be growing it, so it would be contained there.

It was late night before Derek made it home, so he had the time to plant it, and make them some dinner before that time.

"Even Ollie thinks your home late." "Yeah, there was extra courses in fighting which I was forced to do until the end of them." "Ouch, I was going to say I made dinner, but I guess a warm bath would be better?" "How about a bath, then dinner." "I still find it hard to believe you are a vampire." "Just because I can still enjoy food?" "That and well, I never see you drink." "Good, I'd rather keep it that way."

He put a hand on Toshi's shoulder as he walked past him to take the previously mentioned bath before joining Toshi for dinner.

"I didn't forget you Ollie, here."

Toshi smiled watching their feline friend enjoy his meal. He was working on more recipes for pet, so having a test pilot was always good.

"I see I am not the only spoiled one."

After dinner, Derek started work on the stuff he had downloaded earlier. He had to try and crack several codes, and of course send in their reports like normal.

"Hey Toshi?"

He turned around only to see his friend a sleep on the couch. It had been a long day after all, so he was not all to surprised. Grabbing a blanket from a nearby chair, he put it over him watching both him and Ollie sleep.

Sending in his two final reports, and setting the computer up to decode the rest, he decided to try and get some shuteye, and since his spot was taken, he figured he could take the bed for once.

What he didn't notice though, was that somewhere mid sleep, someone else slumped into the same bed, probably not really noticing he was there. Luckily for Derek, he was the first to awake, managing to sneak away unnoticed.

"What.. it snow's here?"

He had just checked for any mail when he noticed it just as he was heading back innside. This being a desert town he simply hadn't thought that there would be snow. Heading back innside he turned on the weather channel, only to get a second surprise.

"Mystery weather huh..."

While waiting for Toshi to wake up, he checked the mails, answered his boss, and made a plan for the day. He had an idea to check the mayor's house for some clues, but it would need them both to pull it off.

"Morning." "Ah, morning sleepyhead."

Toshi stood still for a while as if about to say something, then shook his head and went into the kitchen to make coffee.

"Plans?" "Yeah, after work, let's visit the mayor. If you can keep them occupied with talk, I can have a look around, see if we can find anything." "Sounds good."
