Understanding the roles and responsibilities of an interpreter can help one to do their job effectively, but one's primary responsibility is themselves in every situation. Self-care is sacred here. It prevents burnout, which humanitarian workers are subjected to more than the average person due to many factors, some of which are:

High stakes situations

Continuous meetings without a pause

Emotional challenges

Language and Cultural demands

Complex and challenging assignments

Lack of control and uncertainty

Time pressure and deadlinea

Navigating these to the best of your ability is your daily process, and the key to that process is mindfulness and self-preservation so you are always well-aligned with your values.

Three years of referring to myself as "interpreter" and only one person has asked why I use that instead of "translator".

Okay so I recently started being an interpreter at school functions (I'm fluent in Spanish) and I wanted to make a Gren appreciation post because that man is PERFECT and a real depiction of what interpreters actually do.

He translates directly, with no "she says" "he wants to know" etc, is impartial (I mean, we know he backs her up no matter what, but he doesn't insert his opinion or twist ANY words [other than censoring her] in the middle of conversation), doesn't overtly react, and doesn't go off on side-tangents with one of the people involved mid-conversation.

AND that makes scenes when he's not interpreting for Amaya hit even harder. Like, yes, he's her interpreter, but he's also her best friend (and technically that violates rules of biases, but shhhh). Let them be stupid!

You can really tell that Adrian Petriw (Gren VA), the writers, creators, and animators all did their research-- research that wasn't just skimming Wikipedia articles. They cared about the story they were telling and the people they were representing and it's just- it's so beautiful.

Some key skills and competencies needed for interpreting are good memory, cultural sensitivity, global perspectives, emotional intelligence, active listening, and analytical thinking. Analytical thinking keeps track of the thread between ideas, events, and information. Your note-taking skills are as integral to that as your active memory and listening.

Yet, I would argue that the most important skill is emotional intelligence. You come across people in perhaps their most vulnerable status, and you may find that some have intersecting identities and are more prone to discrimination. You should always acknowledge that and deal with it accordingly. All you need is to remember the Humanity principle; Always prioritize your client's well-being. Ask thoughtful NOT probing questions. Examples: "would you like to take a break?", "Are you comfortable discussing this topic?"...etc.

And in that process, you learn that you are just as important as your client. Beware of vicarious trauma. Communicate your boundaries and build a good support system and self-care goals.

Do no harm to yourself or others. Don't violate codes of conduct and don't exploit your power. You don't have control over resources as an interpreter, but as viewed by the community, you are the bridge to their needs because of the language barrier.

Power dynamics are interesting...

today at uni I tried simultaneous interpretation of a TED talk video from my native language to English for the first time and I think I did a good job!! it's so nice to feel like I can do smth well. got myself some mead to selebrate 😛

Give it up for the medical interpreters who worked tirelessly during the height of the pandemic to provide proper healthcare services to patients and their families in foreign countries.

Give it up for the telephonic and video interpreters who are always fighting for better wages when companies want to pay us far below market rate for the profession.

Give it up for the interpreters who help immigrants with basic services: utilities, insurance, banking, and more.

the other day i was watching a news video that had interview dialogue interpreted from french to english, and i recognized the voice of the interpreter as one of the hosts of a podcast i used to listen to about the field of interpreting
