Synopsis :

In the early years of the 20th century, Chinese military forces find themselves locked in a drawn-out, bloody conflict as they fight back again the Imperial Japanese army.

The government drafts young male conscripts to defend the besieged northeast of the country – but a woman named Xie Xiang also wants in on the action. She decides to cut her hair short and assume her brother’s identity in a bid to join the Chinese army. Xie Xiang quickly proves herself more than capable in soldiery, and soon wins herself a place in an elite military academy in Shanghai.

At the academy, she befriends a number of young male recruits, including quarrelsome rich kid Gu Yan Zheng and the gentle and introverted Shen Jun San. As the recruits begin to hone their skills, they grow in confidence – and decide to take measures of their own in an attempt to foil the invading forces.

But their struggle becomes more complicated when both Gu Yan Zheng and Shen Jun San begin to develop feelings for Xie Xiang. Will the comrades-in-arms survive the bitter ravages of military conflict? Will love derail Xie Xiang’s quest for justice? And will all really prove fair in love and war?

My thoughts on this drama :

This is one of these dramas that make expectations for future ones extremely high…Because it is extremely good. Who cares about actual romance, gimme some heartfelt bromance instead! Almost everything was on point. I say almost because they had to use some overused tropes... Like political corruption... But considering the story, it was logical, just annoying. Bai Lu and Xu Kai once more showed their absolutely adorable chemistry. And damn! Xu Kai is so expressive, how does one even do that with one's face muscles?? His face is an open book, absolutely incredible. The story is superbly written, and if you manage not to be bothered by the very obvious Chinese propaganda and anti-Japanese discourses, you'll really enjoy the 48 episodes. For once, I did not think it was too much. A story that is that level of complex needs many episodes to untangle all plot lines. Considering that the actors are all pretty young (between 25 and 30 years old), I must say they all played their part perfectly. It is impossible not to get attached, even to the ever so annoying and clingy Manting (with the exception of Miss Zhitian maybe). If you are looking for intense romance though, well, try elsewhere. There are some background romances, but it's pretty lowkey, and the interactions are toned down. The few displayed scenes were beautiful though, very touching. The sets, the costumes, and the way it was filmed, with that slightly yellowish filter, it gave this drama a breathtaking authenticity. It was like jumping right in the past, and seeing the events unfold, one by one. There was joy, pain, laughter, tears, smiles, anger...It's an emotionally packed drama, and I loved every second of it. Now to find something at least as good... If you're hesitating because of the 'girl disguising as a boy' trope, then don't, really. Bai Lu actually pulls it off. She managed to give that tomboyish vibe and made her character very believable. Ouch, my hands are still sore from clapping too hard at the end of the final episode... I highly recommend this drama, really.

Quidditch Chaser and aspiring Prefect. Roxanne is excruciating to be around sometimes. A try hard and a teacher's pet, she follows every school rule to a tee with little wiggle room. Although some people think the only reason she's like that is due to her uncle being one of the professor's on campus.

RA4: Beast Queen AU

Queens Era: Queened at the age of 19 and baptized in the blood of those unfortunate enough to try to invade her kingdom on her coronation night. Roxanne developed a reputation as Tasan’s Beast Queen. With sharpened teeth and cat like reflexes, she lead her army to victory in countless battles. All international trade ventures must first be screened underneath her sharp eyes before being allowed entry to the nation’s river system. The queen lives in luxury within her castle walls, only emerging for battles or holidays. The townsfolk know little about their queen beyond her strength and dedication to the protection of Tasan’s interests. 

Princes’ Era: As Tasan is brought into an era of stability and peace, Roxanne has begun the expansion of her bloodline. Within the first three years of peace, she’s given birth to twin boys. Kai and Leo Fury. As soon as they are capable, she trains them in the art of combat and gifts them with weapons from her prior campaigns. The boys must now train in the arts of combat and diplomacy, preparing to jointly rule the kingdom when their mother steps down. 

RA5: DND AU

A paladin of noble blood. Her family takes grand pride in protecting the throne, employed in elite task forces that work from the shadows. While her mother may have flourished this way, Roxanne is a simpler creature. Preferring to serve in the light as the King's Royal Guard. Hardwork and obedience earns her promotion after promotion. Serving basically as his right hand with only one downfall. The paladin's fixation to her king is nearing the same levels as her devotion to her god.

RA6: Cyberpunk AU

Forced to use her paycheck to buy augments, Roxanne clings desperately to her job in law enforcement. She now serves in the Va1kryie task force, a sub-department specifically made for the few officers that were still mostly flesh and blood. Her uniform armors her human weaknesses, while proudly displaying her new cybernetic enhancements. A walking advertisement for the mega corporation that she is now teetered to. Roxy so desperately wants to help the citizens around her but feels bound by the invisible hand that influences her agency. A puppet on strings.

RA7: Zombie AU

Roxanne is in the airport, just arriving home from vacation when the zombie outbreak hits. It's a frenzy, the woman able to fight her way through the madness to recover her belongings. Eventually holing up in the command tower, sending out texts messages to her loved ones to try to meet her at the airport if they're alive. Roxanne bunkers down, staying in the area in hopes someone will meet her there. She sometimes wanders off site, in search of parts to try to fix one of the planes. Dead set on trying to escape to somewhere that might be safe.

RA8: Gladiator AU

Captured at a young age, Roxanne is taken from her home in Carthage and dragged to Rome's coliseum. Her event is the beast hunt, the Romans taking malicious joy in the irony of making a girl kill animals that once lived in her homeland. Hot tempered and sharp, they often compare her to the clawed beasts themselves. The Carthage Lioness. She entertains the disgusting crowd, well aware that if they bore of her beast hunts they may put her in one of the other events.

RA9: Mafia AU

After the death of her partner in a drive by shooting, Roxy goes undercover as an arms dealer to try to figure out who did it. However after years of being so deep undercover, the police department is beginning to worry that she's forgotten where her allegiances are supposed to lie.

Ronin, Book 1, Chapter 01

Koga watched as the retreating army's last stragglers disappeared into the distance. He was glad to see the massive force leaving his lands, but knew without a doubt that this fight was far from over. The siege of the Akita capital was merely the first strike in what would surely be a long and bloody campaign by the Hokkaido and their allies.

Tearing his eyes away from the scene below him, he left the balcony, closing the heavy wooden doors as he entered the war council's chambers. The room was empty now, he had ordered it so hours ago, and he found himself once again drawn to the massive map that sat in the center of the long hall. The map sat atop a solid wood table and accurately showed the topography and political geography of the entire island. Gazing at it, he wondered just how everything had imploded so quickly.

Years ago, in the time of Koga's grandfather, the nine clans of the island had signed peace accords, vowing to never war on each other for land or gold alone and to call council whenever arbitration between species was needed. All the clans had been, at least at the time, proponents of the deal. The growing barbarian and ninja threats were more than enough to contend with in those days and the idea of eight less enemies to worry about had been deemed beneficial to all parties. The three wolf clans, the Hokkaido, the Honshu and the Shikoku, were given control of the areas to the northwest of the Great Mountains while the dog clans, the Akita, Shiba and Kai-Ken, gained authority over the areas to the southeast. This had left the valley; a small but resource rich area nestled in the gap where the Great Mountains split into two separate ranges before rejoining again to the north and south. It was far from the sea and hard to access from the outside world, but the cat clans, the Amur, the Irotomi and the Nekomata, had taken it as their own. Each clan had built a capital in their respective territory and aside from some minor disagreements and skirmishes, the peace had held ever since.

Then, almost a year ago, the Hokkaido had broken the pact. The specifics were still hazy and a near endless stream of conflicting information flowed into the Akita capital on a daily basis, casting even more doubt over the true events of the previous eight months. From what Koga and his network of spies had gathered, the Hokkaido had convinced the Honshu, Shikoku and Kai Ken, the most wolf-like of the dog clans, to unite against the others in a grab for power. Their assault had come without warning and the cat clans, along with the Akita and their Shiba allies, had been caught completely off guard. A force of mostly Honshu and Kai Ken samurai, along with more mercenaries than Koga had thought available to any on the island, had besieged the Akita stronghold before any offensive measures could have been taken. Only the arrival of the unmolested Shiba army had saved Koga’s city from disaster. After a somewhat lengthy siege, the invading army had retreated and the Shiba had entered the capital as much needed reinforcements. 

As if this wasn’t concerning enough, a second force, known only by rumors and whispers at this point, but reportedly consisting almost entirely of elite Hokkaido warriors, was said to have attacked the valley, wiping out the entire Amur clan with a surprise attack on their lakeside home. The other cat clans, not wanting to share that fate, had reportedly abandoned their cities and were unaccounted for at the present time. Koga could only hope they were headed this way. If he meant to subdue the Hokkaido, he would need every ally he had on the island.

With their enemies reeling, the Hokkaido had made a number of strange maneuvers that both confused and worried Koga. First, they seemed to have left the valley after the destruction of the Amur clan. For Koga, the next logical step would have been to move right on to the Irotomi or Nekomata strongholds, but as far as he knew, that had not yet occurred. The fact that these strongholds were now mostly empty made this even more curious. The second odd maneuver was yesterday's call to retreat. The siege had been nowhere close to being over from either side's perspective, that had been months away, but Koga had been aware of his side's disadvantage nonetheless. Had the Hokkaido simply held for six more months, Koga’s army would have had to sully forth to meet them, starving and weak. How passing up that favorable scenario served the Hokkaido’s ultimate goals was a mystery to him, but he doubted that the move was in the Akita clan's best interest.

A heavy and urgent knock on the interior doors to the war room shook him from his dark and troubled thoughts. “Enter!” he barked. His troops and servants were well disciplined and would only bother him during a time of solitude if it was of the utmost importance. Denji, one of his most loyal and trusted samurai, stepped into the room.

“Word from one of our dogs in the Kai Ken capital,” he said, his fur bristling with agitation and excitement.

“Good I hope,” Koga responded.

“If it can be proven, it may be the first crack in the Hokkaido armor that we have discovered thus far,” Denji said, closing the door behind him and joining Koga at the edge of the massive table map. “Our dog, and he is one of our best, with an excellent track record of good information, has sent word that the Hokkaido have taken over leadership of the Honshu, Kai Ken and Shikoku clans.”

“Taken over?” Koga said, stunned, “But how? The others would never consent to such a thing!”

At this Denji’s face grew hard. “Murder,” he said plainly. “While their armies were out fighting the Hokkaido's battles, the damned wolves assassinated much of the Kai Ken and Honshu leadership. They seem to have had a fair bit of inside help in each case, though something is amiss with the Shikoku clan.”

Koga, still stunned by the news that the Hokkaido had now come to control four armies worth of well trained Samurai troops, answered absentmindedly, “Amiss?”

“They have disappeared for the most part,” Denji said, sounding befuddled himself.

“What do you mean disappeared?”

“They were supposed to head south to do battle with the Inoshi tribe, but no word of any sort of military activity has come from the south since the war began, and all of our eyes and ears have noticed an absence of Shikoku soldiers in enemy armies.”

“Have the Hokkaido taken over their capital as well?”

“It seems as though they have, but almost none of the higher ups in the Shikoku army or government structure were there when the Hokkaido made their move.”

“Are they in hiding then or have they simply been defeated in their southern endeavors this quickly? The Inoshi are far more powerful than the southern clans want to believe and I doubt a single army of Shikoku could defeat them or even survive a full scale invasion of their territory.”

“My guess is the former,” Denji said, freely giving his opinion for the first time so far. Koga appreciated it. Denji could be a bit brash, but he was honest; a good combination for an advisor and commander. “If I had to guess, they anticipated Hokkaido treachery and acted accordingly.”

“Find out,” Koga responded. “If we are going to counter the Hokkaido advance we need allies. The Shiba will stand by us to the bitter end, but they will not be enough. If the Nekomata and Irotomi are on their way, they could be of great help. At the very least it would even the odds to four clans against four. Any word on their whereabouts?”

“Nothing I can say for sure, but if they've fled their capitals they could only be headed here or to the monastery.”

“The Tanuki monastery? Why would they seek refuge with the monks?”

“They may seek to bring them to safety,” Denji offered. “The Irotomi at least are a spiritual clan, and cats besides; who knows what their priorities might be?”

“Send a small force to the monastery,” Koga said wearily, “and another to find out what game the Shikoku are playing. If they aren't with the Hokkaido, then they are with us. I can see no benefit to neutrality.”

“Shall I request that our eyes and ears become a bit more proactive? Look for allies among the enemy clans?”

“Yes. I am confident there is a sizable contingent in both the Kai Ken and the Honshu power structures that will not have reacted well to having their sovereignty stripped from them by the Hokkaido. If they can launch attacks from within to soften up our enemy, they must. This will not be a battle won solely in the field.”

“Is that all my Lord?” Denji said, sensing correctly that their exchange of information was now at an end.

“For now,” Koga said, tilting his head slightly towards the younger dog.

Bowing low in return, Denji exited the room wordlessly, leaving Koga alone with his map.

Going For The Gold : Wrestlers In The Olympic Games

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games start this upcoming Friday and I’m excited! So, I decided to write a fun article about some of our favorite wrestlers who competed in the Olympics. Also, you might be surprised about a few of the wrestlers mentioned here.

The Iron Sheik- Represented the country of Iran in the sport of Greco-Roman Style Wrestling in the 1968 Summer Olympic Ganes which took place in Mexico City. He do not medal. In 1972 , he was named as the assistant coach of the USA Wrestling Olympic Team for the Summer Games in Munich. Sheik retired in 2010 and passed away in 2023. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

Bad News Brown - Represented the United States in the sport of Judo at the 1976 Olympic Summer Games in Montreal. He became the first African American to medal in a sport that wasn’t either Boxing or Track & Field. He was a Bronze Medalist. Brown retired from wrestling in 1999 and passed away in 2007.

Mark Henry - Represented the United States in the sport of Weightlifting at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona and the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. He did not medal. He finished 10th in the Super Heavyweight Division in the 1992 Games. Thus , he finished 14th due an injury after his first Clean And Jerk attempt in the 1996 Games. Mark Henry had a successful career in WWE and a stint in All Elite Wrestling. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018.

Kurt Angle - Represented the United States in the sport of Freestyle Wrestling at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. He became a Hold Medalist after winning with a broken neck. Angle also made history by becoming the first Olympic Gold Medalist in Pro Wrestling History. Angle had a successful wrestling career in WWE and TNA. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.

Ronda Rousey- Represented the United States in the sport of Judo at the 2008 Summer Games in Bejing. Rousey made history by becoming the first American woman to medal in Judo. She is a Bronze Medalist in the sport. She had a MMA career in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and a wrestling career in WWE.

Anthony Ogogo- Represented Great Britain in the sport of Boxing at the 2012 Summer Games in London. He was one of the first English Boxers to debut in the Olympic Games. He is an Olympic Bronze Medalist in Boxing for the Middleweight class. He is currently signed to All Elite Wrestling.

Chad Gable- Represented the United States in the sport of Greco-Roman Wrestling at the 2012 Summer Games in London. He qualified for the games in the 185 pound class. However , he did not medal in the competition. He was defeated and eliminated. Gable is currently signed to WWE and his on Monday Night RAW

Bonus :

Kerry Von Erich - Kerry was a Track & Field Athlete in high school in the sport of Discus. He even broke his own father’s record for the sport. However, Von Erich was training and going to compete in the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow, but couldn’t due to President Jimmy Carter asking athletes to boycott the Games in protest of The Soviet Union invading Afghanistan . Nevertheless, his signature move next to The Iron Claw would be the Spinning Discus Punch. He would use this during his WWE run.

My Final Thoughts:

Writing this article amazed me because I didn’t even know a few of these things. I am a huge Von Erich fan and I didn’t even know that about Kerry. I’ve enjoyed watching the Olympic Games as a kid and I still do. What is your favorite Olympic sport?

WACKEN OPEN AIR PART II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picking up where I left off, after Hammerfall it was time for "Enemy of God, Purity and Innocence is killed" who? "Got a master plan, Genocide, Can't understand, People of the Lie" what? "Pleasure to Kill" KREATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 11th time seeing Kreator, first time in a decade of seeing them more than once in the same year as I saw them blow Sepultura off the stage in Toronto, and 2nd time seeing them play Wacken as I last saw them at Wacken Open Air 9 years ago, except I had the Wacken flu on the last day and Kreator were the last band I saw at that time, plus 2014 Wacken was bone dry weather. This time I see them on muddy ground as funnily enough last time they played Wacken was also on muddy ground, except I missed their set at that time as I was busy catching their compatriots Tankard. Even though I was near the Faster stage waiting for Helloween, Kreator still delivered the goods live like they always do. Before Flag of Hate Mille had commended the people at the front for being loud but felt that the people in the back weren't loud enough, eventually the people in the back got loud enough to impress Mille. After Kreator, it was time for "Come with me, Future World" who? "Eagle Fly Free, Let People See" what? "I Want Out, Leave Me Be, I Want Out" one more time? HELLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 6th time seeing Helloween, 3rd time seeing them with Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, first time in a decade seeing them more than once in a year, and 2nd time seeing them at Wacken as I saw them 5 years ago at Wacken with the current lineup. I will say biggest difference this time compared to 5 years ago is seeing Helloween on muddy ground, whereas 5 years ago it was one dusty ground. Seeing them at Wacken for me is truly a great experience since I'm seeing them live in their home country. It was also funny to see Andi Deris and Kiske bantering before Forever and One (Neverland). After Helloween finished, I then grabbed a bite to eat and made my way back to camp and went to sleep.

Friday August 4th: I once again got out of my tent early in the afternoon and met up with Jess, in which it was great to see her again even after 13 months. We both had an in depth conversation to the point of getting emotional, but it felt good to let the tears flow, even with all the booze.

After bantering away, I made my way to the infield and before Maiden took the stage it was time for "Peace Sells...But who's Buying?" who? "À tout le monde, À tout mes amis, Je vous aim, Je dois partir" what? "Possibly I've seen too much, Hangar 18 I know too much" one more time? MEGADETH!!!!!! This was my 5th time seeing them and first time in 11 years I've seen them live as I last saw them at Gigantour 2012 in Hamilton, Canada with Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, then afterwards Dave Mustaine started going off the rails amd making a fool of himself in the process, which made me lose interest in them at that time. This was probably the 2nd best I've enjoyed Megadeth live just behind when they played Rust in Peace in it's entirety 13 years ago because Marty Friedman got to join Megadeth for a few songs, which was the closest to seeing the classic Rust in Peace line-up. Would've further been cool to see Ellefson present but of course he made a fool of himself 2 years ago and got terminated. Also I broke down crying during À tout le monde since I was thinking of both Elouise and Walter. Here's what their setlist looked like:

After Megadeth, it was time for "Caught Somewhere in Time" who? "Stranger in a Strange Land, Land of ice and snow" what? "You take my life, But I'll take yours too" one more time? IRON MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 9th time seeing these guys as I saw them 10 months ago, 3 days before my 33rd birthday and they always put on a great live show. I'll also point out this was my 2nd time seeing them play Wacken as I saw them at Wacken 7 years ago. Bruce Dickinson is a character especially when he was riding the camera wheel and as well at one point saying to Eddie "This is a fucking gun" and as well his banters calling all 50,000 of us "The never surrender people. We didn't know this was going to be the first green car free festival" which was funny "And obviously replenishing the water supply for most of Germany for the last week or so". Bruce also said "I don't know if the ground is soft or is it hard? Hard is good, soft is not so good, unless you're an egg. If you try and jump, just go *blows air out* up up up up up it's whack-a-mole, look at that, 40,000 whack-a-mole" that was his funniest banter. Bruce then also asked "Where are the fuckin Irish... in the pub? There must be somebody from Ireland? OHH THERE'S ONE! Are you the only survivor of the celtic race? There's more of you and we played in Dublin and there's 15,000 of you" Bruce would then go on to say that "You can't kill language, you can't kill culture, you can't kill songs, art, and family" he would end his 2+ minute tangent with "This song is called Death of the Celts... but not quite". Bruce had also expressed his craving for a German sausage since he could smell them being grilled. Also at the end of Maiden's set their logo was lit up in drones and same with Eddie being in samurai Armour. Here's what their setlist looked like:

After Maiden it was time for WARDRUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 2nd time seeing them as I saw them 10 months ago in Toronto 5 days after I turned 33 and I remember they were great live. Seeing Wardruna is more than seeing a band, it's a whole experience, like a crossover between concert and theatre. At one point there were two English lads talking during their performance and one of the locals put them in their place, which was great as they were getting annoying. At one point during their 3rd song Solringen, the speakers cut out for at least a couple minutes and the crowd began clapping, when they came back on, the crowd erupted with approval. Einer Selvik had said before Helvingen and during his banter he said "My culture over your culture bullshit, doesn't apply" which earned resounding applause as it's true. Those things are dangerous, and my investigation methods are a little provocative.” Dib recalled back to his last ghost hunting adventure, where he banged pots and pans together and loudly demanded that ghosts came out and did things with random objects and his body. That hadn’t worked the first time, but maybe it would work now that there was double the human energy. 

Despite the danger, he still had a smile on his face. He was happy to be approaching the ancient house, with Kai by his side. He always enjoyed a good ol fashioned ghost hunt, and there was something to be said about exploring places with friends. He was so used to going things alone, that to have someone with him would be a wonderful experience. His eyes were shining with happiness as he walked, his posture betraying fearlessness and excitement.

These Irkens were something else. Her? Team up with a species that was inferior to the Gems in every way, who acted without a semblance of logic, who’s entire species was reliant on snacks? No, Peridot wouldn’t do that. Yellow Diamond would be furious if she shared Homeworld secrets, plus, she was to eventually destroy the planet. She couldn’t allow herself to get tangled up with anybody. Peridot shook her head, her expression veering on smug at the other’s suggestion. The last thing she needed was someone getting in the way of her efficiency. Plus, their tech was so outdated! How could she ever expect an even team up with a species so far behind Gem engineering. No, there was really no way a team up would be effective.

Dib had been lost in time, unfocused as he sat in class. He hadn’t slept in 72 hours and he was feeling it. Well who could blame him? There were signs of a new colony of Jersey Devils, and he had to get some evidence to send into the Swollen Eyeball Network and some video to Truthshrieker. It was absolutely more important than sleep. Dib however, was not all there, he was checked out. Until a nudge on his shoulder forced him to bolt straight up as he frantically began looking around. 

“I’VE GOT YOU NOW YOU JERSEY-” He realized he was in school, and that Kai was the one who nudged him. He deflated, and offered a weak smile. “I don’t need sleep. Not when there’s evidence to catch!”
