what if the umbrella academy members’ plot roles got jumbled around with their powers still the same (but with certain deviances).

luther takes the role of allison (taking inspiration from marcus) and becomes a sort of entrepreneur and benefiting from his fame as a former member of the academy and going with his dream of becoming an astronaut and establishing his own family but repeatedly and unknowingly hurts his kid (because he never learned that using the same strength to deal with adults to handle kids is not acceptable and had to learn how to control his strength along the way) and has to deal with divorce

diego takes the role of viktor with his powers suppressed since childhood and constantly felt like an outsider in the umbrella academy and goes on to become part of the police force but never gets promoted past a certain rank no matter how hard he works because the ratio of his successes to failures with his cases (eudora would be like helen in this scenario)

allison takes the role of five in that she’s super confident in the use of her powers to the point of arrogance and when they were young, pushed herself to the limits and created a rumor that she left the umbrella academy (instead of just walking out like any normal person because she thinks reggie will just drag her back) but was instead taken by a shady organization manipulating events behind the scenes for decades or centuries and are planning for the apocalypse

klaus takes the role of ben, dead as a doornail (but not really, cause he’s immortal - not that he or anyone besides reggie knows) and would appear as a ghost towards some siblings (astral projection); dies (put in a coma) due to the ‘dave incident’

five takes the role of klaus, a druggie treated as a waste trying to forget visions of the future or the past that reggie forced him to delve into or to stop the visions from coming altogether (doesn’t discover the spatial side of his abilities until much later or the fact that his abilities over time goes beyond visions)

ben takes the role of diego as a gruff vigilante by night and anger issues to last decades (take sparrow ben as the basis for his personality) with an on again off again relationship with jennifer

viktor takes role of luther, reggie’s loyal soldier and was severely injured during a mission but was saved by reggie by making him a cyborg and sent to the moon where spent his days playing solos with his violin

The Murderbot Diaries, by Martha Wells

These are the best science fiction I've read since James S. A. Corey's Expanse series, in some ways even better. At least four of these books had me up way too late reading them, well into the "I'm going to pay for this at work tomorrow" hours. The other three I finished on weekends.

The main character is a robotic/cyborg security guard, the self-named Murderbot. In this setting you can make purely technological artificial intelligence, but it seems to be cheaper to get most of the way with tech, and then add in a cloned human brain for the adaptive and creative thinking bits. Think Robocop, but instead of a resurrected dead person, it's just cloned tissue here and there.

And Murderbot is very definitely not a person, and does not want to be:

Dr. Mensah said, “That’s not an attitude a lot of humans are going to understand. We tend to think that because a bot or a construct looks human, its ultimate goal would be to become human.”

“That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”

This series makes me think that Star Trek really did Data dirty. Instead of having him wanting to become human they could have gone in a much more interesting direction. Imagine if the Borg Queen had tried to covert him and he just rejected her totally because "Just ugh, no. I'm already better than you."

But Murderbot does have that human brain, and it causes it a lot of trouble. Guilt mostly at first (it gave itself that name for a reason), helplessness (most of the humans it had interacted with before the series were basically corporate slaves, indentured servants on a generational level whose highest hope was to save up enough money that their kids could get upgraded to management, a system Murderbot can't shoot or punch), fear of itself being enslaved again (it had hacked the electronic bit that the company could use to control and kill it, but it had to keep that hidden), and then finally fear that its humans could be killed.

It's basically a giant ball of neuroses and stress, and it's vastly entertaining to see how it deals and adjusts to that.

Another major character in the series is just amazing; the Asshole Research Transport. ART is a fully sentient ship Murderbot meets in the second book. It's got the same losing-its-crew fear Murderbot has, and its reactions to that are the chef's kiss.

At one point it downloads a smaller copy of itself into an unarmed shuttle and threatens another armed transport:

“I lack a sense of proportional response. I don't advise engaging with me on any level.”

At another point, it thinks one of its friends is being held hostage. Step one of it's plan?

“Iris: “Peri, you can’t bomb the colony.”

Perihelion: “You are incorrect, Iris, I can bomb the colony.”

It just straight to orbital bombardment. I don't even remember if there was a step two, something like telling the people it was attacking why it was doing that or how to get it to stop. I think it may have just assumed they'd be able to figure out what they did wrong and why the angry sky-god had commenced with the smiting.

I'd like to read more of course, but the end of the last book seemed to be a pretty good natural stopping point for the series. There's a few comments on reddit that Martha Wells had signed a multi book contract with her publisher and that two more might be Murderbots, but this is a pretty satisfying conclusion. There's also supposed to be a TV series coming out.

Really, really recommend reading these. They're to quality; enough splody bits that I enjoy them and enjoy characterization to make the splody bits mean something.

Next on my list is S. A. Barnes Ghost Station. It's got a crew of astronauts occupying a base on a planet where an alien civilization fell in order to maintain residency and ownership for their corporate overlords. I'm not that far into it; it seems to be going into an Event Horizon horror direction, where the demons they have to survive might be caused by the main character's past, the dead aliens, or just something humanity in general finds escaping itself out in the dark of space.

I'd Die (Again) for Y'all (Part 11)

Whatever the GIW was looking for it, Bats had it in spades. Cyborg himself didn't. Which, he wasn't going to lie, was a relief. He had enough trouble without government agencies looking to cut him open to see how he ticked.

"You holding onto the guns?" he asked, taking another look-see at the scanner.

"Hn."

"Right. I'll get to work on this, you watch your back."

It was a simple process of gathering and sorting data. He couldn't the thing up to the Watchtower's systems until he understood it better, so Cyborg went about it the old fashioned way == he used the scanner on every League member and staff personnel on the station.

It took a while, but once he started comparing his positive results, something jumped out fairly quickly. Everyone the scanner alerted on had died and come back to life at least once.

There were a few false negatives -- folks who had died and didn't set off the scanner. Wonder Woman was one of them. Like her, the others all had some connection with some variety of gods. Which raised a ton of questions, but for now Cyborg had what he needed: proof the GIW was targeting folks who had died and a clue as to how they were doing it. The scanner was clearly picking up on /something/ after all. And those laws Oracle turned up talked a lot about ectoplasm, so assume ghosts and ectoplasm actually exist…

Wonder Woman was a princess of Themyscira and any princess was, by definition, a diplomat. She reminded herself of that, very firmly, as Agent D tried, again, to get her to return their guns.

"I'm sorry," she said firmly, "But only authorized personnel are allowed weapons here. You are lucky I was able to clear you to come up at all. Now, you were going to tell me how we can defend against infiltration by these…"

"Ecto-entities," the other agent jumped in. "You have at least one here already--"

"And we are keeping him under observation until this can be resolved," Wonder Woman said smoothly. She didn't need to explain that everything on the Watchtower was under constant observation. Let them think that she actually believed their ridiculous claim.

Really, she was starting to wonder if these 'ecto-entities' weren't all a figment of the agents imagination.

Poor Phantom. If they'd been hunting him as long as she suspected it was no wonder he reacted badly to the Justice League. They were, as she had said more than once, too closely tied to the US government.

Hopefully when this was 'resolved' they'd have a chance to apologize and help him feel safe again.

"Now, you have said that these entities can fly and do not need to breath. Would they be able to enter space?"

The dumbfounded look on the two agents faces was all the answer she needed. They answered anyway. "Oh my god, we never thought of that."

"We'll need to begin testing on all returning astronauts immediately to make sure they aren't overshadowed. That would be horrible. And dangerous."

Wonder Woman nodded as if she understood what they were talking about. "That is indeed concerning."

Spooktober day 31 Halloween party/monster mash/trick or treat

A Team Fortress fanfiction for @tyronedatiger event Spooktober day 31 and I'm doing all three prompts for this day.

The BLU mercs are going trick or treating with some kids with Scout as Robin, Solider as a Roman soldier, Pyro as a little girl, Demoman as a pirate, Heavy as a masked man, Engineer as a cyborg, Medic as a bishop, Sniper as a biker, and Spy as a vampire, and four kids as Ghostbusters and four other kids as ninja reptiles. A African American boy named Kevin whose dressed up as a Ghostbuster said to the mercs, "Thanks for coming with us, grow ups. Still, why are you coming with us?" and Scout said to the kids, "What? It's Halloween, and that means free candy." Spy said to the kids, "It is more like Scout wanting to get to know single mothers." and Sniper said, "By the way, I think this is her neighborhood."

The BLU mercs and the kids arrived at a house and Scout knock on the door, which the female spy from the Purple Team open and she then call from inside the house, "Scout, your boyfriend is here." and the female scout wearing a unicorn costume look out and she said in a upset tone, "What are you doing here, dude?" Scout quickly said to his female counterpart, "Oh, we were just trick or treating. I wanted to see if you wanted to joined us." and the female scout said, "No thanks! I go out with the RED Scout in fighting Merasmus or some monster than go on a date with you." and she shut the doors on Scout's face and half of the team laugh.

Over at Ghost Fort, the RED team are fighting Merasmus the wizard along with the Horseless Headless Horsemann and Monoculus as Scout is dressed as a skeleton, Soldier is dressed as a robot, Pyro is dressed as a demon, Demoman is dressed as a vampire, Heavy is dressed as Frankenstein's Monster, Engineer is dressed as the human fly, Medic is dressed as a astronaut, Sniper is dressed as a vampire hunter, and Spy is dressed as the Invisible Man.

So I wanted to get back to reading Swan Queen fic regularly, and I asked people to rec longfic that they'd read (not written) and loved that had fewer than 300 kudos! I haven’t read most of these, but I’ve collected them here so y’all can go through the list and discover some new fics with me! Please try to kudos and review every fic that you read! It means the world to the writers and will keep em writing, and then we all win. 😁

Atonement by SgtMac (M): With Regina's magical heart failing thanks to years of previous evil, Emma and Regina and Henry (and Granny!) set out to save her life by traveling to the Enchanted Forest and requesting help from ancient magical beings known as the Guardians. Given a mission as simple as it is impossible - to achieve atonement by creating peace - the ladies find themselves joining a rebellion and fighting for the very soul of the Enchanted Forest all while trying to help Regina to understand that the self-loathing and guilt which have driven most of her actions don't have to doom her chance for a new beginning or even, a chance to live and love again. A S4(ish) SQ love story set against the turmoil of war and the chaotic savagery of the old world.

Blood and Sand by cheshire6845 (E): A/U The Savior is a slave forced into the role of fighting as a gladiator for the House of Hearts. The odds are against her survival as she will have to win in the arena, navigate Cora's schemes, outlast a general's vengeance, and not be killed out of spite by the current House of Hearts Champion - Regina the Undefeated. This story follows the major plot points of Starz Spartacus with some twists along the way.

But what if there was no time by KizuRai (M): When she wakes up, it's dark. She can't move, she can't see, she can't feel and she can't hear. Where am I? She feels a forceful oppression, pressing her down, draining her of her energy and she's powerless to stop it. How did I get here? The question of here is relative, she's not even sure where here is. What happened? There must be some reason for being stuck here but her memory is fuzzy, like all her thoughts are being sifted through a filter. Who am I? She's not sure if she actually exists or she suddenly became sentient in the darkness.She hears a voice reverberating in the distance, it's distorted and quiet but she hears it all the same. It breaks the monotony of the silence. Someone's coming for her, they will get her out. She's just not sure she wants them to as the price might be too great.

Finding Home by evl_rgl (T): “I wanted to remember you so badly that I pulled back your cursed town just so that the memories would make sense. I needed you so badly that even when I had no memory of you, I still tried to find you.” Regina gave Emma and Henry memories of a happy life together before they fled Pan’s curse, leaving them with no memories of their lives in Storybrooke. However, when the memory spell shows signs of failing, threatening to rip apart the minds of both Emma and Henry, Regina makes a drastic choice to go back and fix it, understanding that it will mean living alone in a world where her son doesn’t know her. Five Flames by MariaComet (U): In the past, Emma Nolan disconnected from her peers in high school, preferring to keep to herself. In her sophomore year of high school, she decided to try and join the boy’s wrestling team because she was bored. She didn’t expect herself to become the champion of the most bullied kid in school or the secret best friend of the school queen. She also didn’t expect to join a club that would change her life. In the present, Emma is trying to cope with a humiliating loss in her martial arts career. She claims to be “training” but is stuck in limbo between wanting to retire and try again. She is isolated from her former best friend, Regina Mills, a local celebrity chef and the rest of her old friends. When one of them calls her with an idea to honor their deceased teacher, she is confronted with unresolved feelings and questions about how powerful love truly is.

A Glamour of Truth by PrincessCharming (T): After 2x10, Regina uses magic to show Emma the obvious truth. A tentative trust forms between them amid hilarious bickering. With Emma's help, Regina struggles to regain a place in her son's life... until Cora arrives, wanting her daughter back. Pieces of Regina's past emerge showing that the board was set long before the game started. The final battle begins soon.

His Dark Materials 'verse by MoonlitMidnight (M): A modern Alternate Universe in which Dæmons (the external physical manifestation of a person's 'inner self' that takes the form of an animal) are present. In which Emma and Regina have led slightly different lives and they make slightly different choices.

How Many Miles to Avalon? (WIP) by RavenOutlander (E): Regina would do anything to save Emma from the darkness and bring her back home safe and sound. Even put up with the two idiots, Captain Guyliner and a bunch of dwarves she decidedly wanted to drop off at the nearest exit. But in their search for Emma, they find that she might not need that much saving after all. Caught up in a search for the infamous Philosopher Stone, an all out war between DunBroch and Camelot, and ghosts from the past to haunt her every waking moment, Regina finds herself scrambling to keep her and her family's happy endings from falling apart.

The Hyperion by FrankenSpine (M): After wishing upon what she believes is a shooting star, Emma Swan finds herself aboard the Hyperion, the royal starship of an alien Queen from a faraway galaxy. She quickly learns of the tensions between the Queen's people and her own, but the Queen takes an interest in her and agrees to take her away from Earth forever. Adventure awaits. *(Loosely based on Guardians of the Galaxy with just a hint of Farscape)*

If Wishes Came True (It Would've Been You) by Angeii_K (M): After Regina films a guest appearance on her friend Neal’s popular show, he invites her to spend the weekend with him and his girlfriend. What she never expected was to actually like the woman. Sparks fly between the two, which results in them questioning everything and making choices they will later regret. 4 years later, they meet again in the most unexpected of ways. Now co-stars on the same show, they are forced to work through the emotions from their last encounter. What will happen next? Only time will tell.

Their paths cross leading them onto a journey of new discovery. Between galaxies and many miles of cold black space, despite not speaking the same language, they manage to fall for each other. Junkscience is a cyborg collaboration between an AI, an art student and Lynn Margulis’ digital ghost. 

When NASA first asked the scientific community: how can we detect life on other planets? It prompted the question: what is life? They commissioned scientists to produce a Life Detection Apparatus, a device that could detect the living process. 

We are 70 years late with our reply. 

Our apparatus is nonfunctional. It is a knockoff, a simulation, an artist’s impression.

Junk art collaborating with junk science to produce conglomerate debris.

Top 5 Scariest Films for Halloween

 It’s October, which means it’s prime time for enjoying all the things that chill our bones, terrify our souls and spook us so bad that the only way we can fall asleep is with all the lights on, a crucifix over our beds and a copy of Infinite Jest on our night stands to be used as a blunt weapon against any potential demons or undead killers who may come for us.

I’ve never been a fan of haunted houses. I spook too easily, I guess. I’m not the guy they want walking through their halls anyhow. In past houses I’ve committed all offenses in reaction to being spooked: punched a worker square in the nose; stomped to death some kind of mechanical tentacle protruding from the floorboards; grabbed a psychotic clown by his wig and headbutted him in the teeth; made my wife go first.

Around this time of year, I’m a bigger fan of staying in where the people around me are safe. But I still enjoy giving myself the heebie-jeebies. That’s why I’m offering you, dear reader, my pick of the Top 5 Scariest Films you should watch this Halloween.

1. Shutter (2008) Written by: an original screenplay by  Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom Directed by: Masayuki Ochiai Starring: Joshua Jackson and Rachael Taylor 

A Japanese flick from the producers of The Grudge and The Ring, this supernatural tale makes you want to regret every photograph you’ve ever taken of dead Japanese girls. Like all good horror films, Shutter offers an important lesson: don’t bring your new wife to the city where you participated in raping an ex-girlfriend. The movie is allegedly one of Mark Judge’s favorites. But don’t let that keep you from watching it. Just don’t watch it with Judge in the same room. That’s scarier than even this film’s horrifying omega.

  2. Gravity (2013) Written by: Alfonso Cuarón and Jonás Cuarón Directed by: Alfonso Cuarón Starring: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney 

Thanks to the film Apollo 13, we know traveling in space is risky business. In part because of their affinity for Tang, astronauts are tough mofos. They have to be brave, incredibly intelligent and able to keep their calm in the most dire of circumstances. Such is the case in Gravity. While servicing the Hubble Space Telescope, Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) are forced to abandon their maintenance mission when high-velocity space junk rips through their orbit poking holes in their mission and their co-worker’s face. That’s all well and good. At this point, Gravity is an action film. It’s when Bullock is left in space with nothing else than a fire extinguisher and Clooney’s ghost running its oh-so-charming mouth off when the fear grips you tighter than Buzz Aldrin’s space diaper.

Oh, screw it. The trailer is enough to make you never want to leave the earth again with as much of a jump for joy.

3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens Written by: Lawrence Kasdan, J. J. Abrams and Michael Arndt Directed by: J.J. Abrams Starring: The ruined childhood of virgin 50-year-olds everywhere 

The brief synopsis of this movie is Star Wars: A New Hope. There aren’t many seat-jumping moments in this film. Every opportunity to heighten the intensity and threatening nature of Kylo Ren and The First Order is met with almost slapstick humor. What makes this film a perfect watch for Halloween is hindsight. Unlike the best horror films where surprise is the most important element, The Force Awakens is a terrifying flick because we know the wreckage it leads to: Disney’s churning out diluted facsimiles of the Original Trilogy to take our money while leaving us wondering what we just paid for. The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars film that can honestly be considered a suspense/thriller because of Disney’s ingenious mindfuck. It has more of a “Holy shit! I didn’t see that coming!” moment than Get Out and The Usual Suspects.

 4. Superman III (1983) Written by: David Newman and Leslie Newman Directed by: Richard Lester Starring: Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor, Margot Kidder 

I was probably 5-years-old when I first saw this. I thought Richard Pryor was funny. I thought Superman was awesome. I though Margot Kidder was beautiful. I thought the climax where Vera Webster is transformed into a cyborg was the stuff of pure evil. Satan’s nightmares. The worst possible way die. It was this scene that kept me from owning a Walkman and being unable to hug my dad if he was wearing his pager. I had a complete distrust of ’80s technology. I’m still not sure that our answering machine isn’t responsible for my parents’ divorce.

5. Mannequin (1987) Written by: Michael Gottlieb and Edward Rugoff Directed by: Michael Gottlieb Starring: Andrew McCarthy, Kim Catrall, Meshach Taylor and James Spader

To start, this film’s main title song is Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now. Yikes. Beyond that, this thriller will have you biting your nails down to your second knuckle as you watch the perverted delusions of a young man unravel all over the streets of Philadelphia. (Director Michael Gottlieb should have picked Bruce Springsteen’s Streets of Philadelphia as the title tune.) Ancient Egyptian curses, sexual attraction to inanimate objects, emotional psychosis and a demonic sidekick in Meshach Taylor’s Hollywood will leave you feeling haunted all the way through Thanksgiving. Mannequins, along with wax figures, are inherently terrifying; those unblinking eyes, the stiff limbs. Mannequins exist so that we may picture ourselves as them, which is fashionable, fit and always gorgeous. But they are lifeless, cold and as much alien as they are human. So when one comes alive in the form of ’80s-hot Kim Catrall, one would expect the fear imposed by these ceramic effigies to dissipate. Fortunately for your horror film-viewing pleasure and thanks to the genius of Cannon Films, this is not the case with Mannequin.

By the end of the film, you’re left wondering; if perception is reality, who’s perception are we perceiving? Mannequin is more of a mindfuck than The Force Awakens.
