While I can't imagine most Tumblr users have even heard of this 52-year-old Otto Preminger movie:
SUCH GOOD FRIENDS (1972): Annoyingly disjointed comedy-drama, based on a 1970 Lois Gould novel, about a 30something Jewish woman (a miscast Dyan Cannon) who reaches her wit's end when her boorish husband Richard (Laurence Luckinbill), who'd been threatening to divorce her, ends up in a coma following a routine surgery, leaving her to grapple with his array of condescending, useless doctors and her discovery of a "little black book" showing that Richard has been persistently unfaithful.
Elaine May's script for the film adaptation (written under the pseudonym "Esther Dale") has some funny smaller moments, but doesn't hold together at all as a story, largely defanging the protagonist's ornery frustration (which is the whole point of the novel) and only timidly approximating the book's caustic humor and sexual bluntness. Director Otto Preminger's apparent discomfort with the material also allows the tone to waver queasily between absurdist comedy and dreary wronged-wife melodrama, particularly toward the end. It has its moments, but the point has been missed — skip it and just read the book instead.
Absurdly, Roger Ebert's 1972 review credits Preminger and May for the film's "vulgarity" and for making "a sort of black-comedy version of Lois Gould's serious novel," an assertion credulous online sources like IMDb continue to wrongly present as fact. One can only assume Ebert hadn't actually read more than the jacket blurb of the bestselling book — which is much more vulgar and far more laceratingly cynical than anything in the film — and that whoever added that IMDb trivia hasn't read it at all.

Tripping back into my comic hyperfixation really reminds me of how important Batman has been in my life.
I was introduced to Batman through the animated show when I was 4 and became obsessed. I would watch Batman: Subzero on VHS on LOOP at my grandma’s house. I think an older cousin owned and left it, but of that I’m not entirely positive. All I remember is sitting on my grandma’s bed watching it on her small, fuzzy-reception, tv and falling in love with Batman’s design and compassion as he handled Mr. Freeze. The art was so smooth and the colors so rich, I remember being in awe and wanting more than anything to LIVE in that world Bruce Timm created.
I would obsessively check TV guides and plan my schedule - as best as I could - around when reruns of ANY of the animated series would run and camp in front of the TV to watch it. BTAS, TNBA, Batman Beyond. Those led me to other shows like Static Shock, the Superman animated series, Smallville - and even shows outside of the DCU like X-Men Evolution, which I was also obsessed with. When Justice League premiered I remember I screamed in excitement and would beg my mom to let me watch it during dinner.
Then I started reading the comics from the library. There were some in my elementary school and my mom would take me to the local library to pick up others often. I remember checking out the Long Halloween when I was probably around 6/7 and being freaked out, yet intrigued, by Tim Sale’s art style. I admittedly understood next to nothing about the storyline because it was pretty word-heavy, even for me as an avid reader back then. Also the font was hard to read. I preferred Gotham Adventures (for obvious reasons) back then and the graphic novel reprints of Tim Drake’s run as Robin.
Around 8/9 is when I was introduced officially to Adam West’s Batman and I don’t think I will ever forget that moment. My grandma was on a classic movie kick and would pretty much non-stop have TCM or TV Land on in the background. Most of it was very boring to me, although I could listen to the way classic Hollywood stars spoke all day (and most of the time, I had to lol). One day, there was a splash of color on the screen I didn’t expect and my jaw dropped when I saw THE JOKER AND BATMAN RUNNING TOWARDS THE OCEAN WITH SURFBOARDS. I stood in front of the TV with my mouth agape as I saw BATMAN in SWIM TRUNKS and a CAPE. I was transfixed: the music, the whacky costumes, the absolute madcap zaniness of it all so different than what I was used to, but so so right. When I saw Batman pull out a “Bat Shark Repellent” that was game over, I laughed so hard I had to sit down. I would check TV guides for reruns of that, too, and it was always so much fun. I remember so many instances where I would be enjoying a late afternoon snack or having dinner and nearly spitting my food all over the table/tray from laughter.
Kevin Conroy is my Batman, always and forever, the closest to my heart and my everything in regards to the Bat, but the indescribable joy Adam West gave me as a child is nearly incomparable.
I started ACTUALLY collecting comics when I was around 8, on and off, and it really kicked off when I was around 13, but at 17 when I got a job, oh boy, pretty much all my money went to DC Comics, video games, and manga.
But yeah, it all started 22 years ago. Over two decades Batman has been a part of my life - that’s crazy to think about.
Also, I pretty high-key credit Sesame Street for my very easy slide into my Batman - and slightly unrelated vampire - obsession because I was IN LOVE with the Count.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS PART ONE: CINEMATIC WRONGS AND ANALYSIS COMMENTARY
DO NOT REBLOG.
This is going to be a bullet point list of incidents that occur in the movie, and will either have my general commentary or an analysis of what makes the scene terrible (or in some rare cases, good). TRIGGERS FOR SUICIDE, MENTAL HEALTH, AND DYSMORPHIA
-bruce trying to kill himself in the beginning of the movie.
Hes reckless, and willing to risk his life, but not suicidal. But he just purposefully gets into a wreck at 2 minutes into the movie?? for no reason??? theres literally no reason for it other than it being angsty bc they COULDVE started the movie with the mutants doing crime, as the next scene cuts right into it and the following news reports
-"This reporter hopes that wherever he is, hes enjoying a toast with good friends" said when its the anniversary of batman’s disappearance
this is stupid I hate this movie. You're telling me Gotham forgives Batman for just disappearing on them? DID THAT NOT HAPPEN IN NML AND EVERYONE GOT PISSED??? Like everyone in this movie seems to have forgot he abandoned the city. Not to mention, and I'm gonna go off on a tangent here, bruce will be batman for as long as he lives. He calls himself batman in his mind even when hes retired. He believes that Bruce wayne is the mask. His whole identity is batman. Saying that hed quit because of jason is not only stupid because it implies Jason's death isnt just as important as his parents, but shows that any tragedy is enough to permanently knock him down. And as if the league, or the family, would have let him give up. Anyway the whole reason the retirement in batman beyond works is because it shows bruce was going to fight until he literally died on the spot, but instead he pointed a gun, didn't even use it, just pointed it, and he realized he wasnt fit to HONOR batman anymore. He broke the rule. And he doesnt deserve to wear the mantle. This is so good because 1) bruce still wants to be batman and 2) it doesnt imply that he gave up at all, and at this point with his decreasing wellness his family WOULD be telling him to stop
-Gordon toasts with Bruce on the anniversary
FBKSBSOANSISSB OH MY GOD IT JUST SHOWED HIM SHARING A TOAST WITH GORDON. this is the anniversary of the last time batman is sighted and gordon. JIM FUCKING GORDON. Is celebrating. When they were literally partners and hed shine the batsignal each night TELL ME WHERE THE LOGIC IS!!! I CANT FIND THE LOGIC!!!!! I'm literally 3 minutes into this movie..... and already this is how its going...
-Gordon and Bruce talk
"You're not worried about me, are you?" Asked when hes in clear danger of being attacked by mutants "noT MorE tHAn i aM tHe ReST oF tHis CItY" ah yes. I forgot that Bruce hated gotham and jim Gordon. My mistake. Common misconception.
-the mutants are introduced
Ugh and it's the worst kind of villains too, jim just described the mutants as "the worst kind of criminals. They are only after violence, with no humanity at all" GIVE! VILLAINS! REASONING! I hate these joker wannabes Joker was already enough we dont need a million more "lol I'm just evil deal with it" villains
"Talk to Dick lately?"asks Gordon "You know I havent" Bruce responds
THIS CONVERSATION IS GETTING W O R S E BC I KNOW HOW THIS MOVIE GOES AND HE JUST INSTANTLY HAS CARRIE BE THE NEW ROBIN- WHICH, IS N O T BRUCE'S TO GIVE. ITS ALWAYS BEEN DICK'S MANTLE TO PASS DOWN- WHEN HE HASNT BEEN SPEAKING TO DICK????
-tangent on how it’s overlooked that Dick Grayson was the one to make Robin, not Batman
This is a sin that not just the movie, but the batman franchise in general seems to always make. Robin was made as a tribute to the flying graysons, and is meant to be colorful and aerodynamic for acrobatic tricks. it should always be dick’s to pass down, or the next robin after.
-Bruce begins having trouble with holding back his urge to be Batman
His whole wanting to be batman again thing started because of a newspaper with a family's death and pearls being sold. On the same front cover. I'm. THATS WHEN HE REMEMBERS HIS PARENTS? NOT EVERY FUCKING TIME HE HEARS A GUNSHOT? OR CLOSES HIS EYES? OR SEES BLOOD? HE READS A NEWSPAPER THATS FLOATING IN THE WIND??????NOT EVERY TIME HE LOOKS AT JASONS COSTUME? OR THE OTHER CRIMES COMMITTED??????LOGIC!!!!!!!!!! I NEED !!!! TO KNOW!!!!! WHERE IT IS!!!!!!!! ARE U KIDDING ME NOW THE MARK OF ZORRO, WHICH IS WHO THE FUCK KNOWS HOW OLD NOW, IS ON TV??????????? AND HE JUST HAPPENS TO FLIP TO THE CHANNEL.. Batman telling bruce "you've tried to hold me back. But you're weak. Ypu know it in your soul. You're nothing but a hollow shell." Is so STUPID!! WHY HAS HE BEEN FIGHTING BEING BATMAN!!!!!!!!!! BRUCE SHOULD WANT TO BE BATMAN!!!! AND HATE HAVING TO NOT BE!!!! AND A BAT FLYING INTO HIS WINDOW AGAIN???? STOP THE FUCKING CLICHES IM SICK OF THIS . UR NOT BEING NEXT LEVEL, MOVIE. ITS JUST DUMB. ITS DUMB!!!
-Carrie Kelly
her first ??? Appearance??? Is her going into KNOWN MUTANT GANG TERRITORY instead of going through the rain. And scolding her friend for not having backbone WHEN THEY COULD LITERALLY DIE and saying, and I quote, "its better than out there." then when interviewed about the incident her friend says  "It was a flying monster! With wings and fangs!" and she replies with "Reality check, Michelle, it was definitely a man, but he had to be like 12 feet tall" OH YEAH THATS VERY REALISTIC CARRIE. Shes an asshole to her friend and we're supposed to like her.  Oh and Carrie's reason for wanting to be robin? She saw the bat signal while her parents were talking about public marches. That's it. That's her reason. Not because she was attacked by mutants and almost died.
-Giving the movie credit
Okay but if theres another thing I'll give credit for, and I'm sure its unintentional, is that Harvey is the first criminal he wants to take down. Because Harvey is always going to be Bruce's priority. He didnt go after the mutants, but Two-Face. And the way that confrontation goes when it’s revealed harvey thinks both sides of his face are scarred. the Arkham staff fixed his scars before he was ready for treatment, and his mental health wasn’t priority. he was going to have dysmorphia either way, but not treating mental illness worsened it.  kinda? good writing? But I think it was unintentional to have the idea that Arkham didnt know what they were doing and the belief that scars are important before trauma, and how trauma has to be helped first. I dont believe for an instant that's what's meant.
-Carrie Kelly part two
She gets a Robin costume and goes out onto the roof and is like.... almost dies. THEN THE NEXT SCENE WE SEE HER SHES LIKE COMPLETELY ACROBATIC? WHY IS SHE SO ACROBATIC NOW!!! THIS TAKES PRACTICE!!!
-Batman confronting the man who supplied the mutant gang with guns
Oh, this scene...He hands a guy a gun, knowing full well that he was depressed because his wife was dying and he had to make more money to save her by supplying the mutants with weapons, and just walks away as he kills himself. (input from a friend which i like:  think about everything bruce did to help mr freeze and his wife now think about this scene )
Batman vs Mutants
oh, and the "batmobile". Aka his tank. Rubber bullets. Ok fine, whatever, but RUNNING THEM OVER AND SHOOTING MISSCLES ISNT LETHAL? AND HOW IS CARRIE KELLY GOOD AT FIGHTING ALL OF THEM WHEN SHE COULDNT HANDLE HERSELF WITH ONE LIKE A WEEK AGO.  hate that the mutant leader is just a ripoff of bane with long pointed nipples I hate this. I hate that batman cant take him down, but carrie kelly can. AND THE MUTANT LEADRER TOTALLY DIED WHEN BRUCE THREW ADHESIVE ON HIS FACE AND HE WAS SUFFOCATED BUT LATER ON IT SHOWS HE LIVES ??
Bruce talks to Carrie
"What is this thing?" -carrie "Dick called it the batmobile" -bruce "SIR!!" -alfred over the radio There are no words. Then she pops his arm into place and creates a makeshift cast And he says "where'd you learn to do that?” and because she’s a mary sue she says nothing, because miller doesnt know why she should, so he cuts to "what's your name?" and she says "Carrie. Carrie Kelly. robin" and HE FUCKING GOES "MINES BRUCE." and then immediately tells Alfred hes bringing "robin" to the cave. I hate it here I hate that he forgets what happened to Jason aFTER ITS HIS LITERAL REASON FOR QUITTING. WHAT IS THE POINT IF HE’S GOING TO ACCEPT THIS GIRL HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW AS ROBIN?
-Bruce talks about Jason
OH BRUCE'S FUCKING LINE. HIS LINE. IM FURIOUS Alfred asks "have you forgotten what happened to Jason?" And he says "I'll never forget. he was a good soldier. He honored me" I AM !!!! SHAKING!!!! WITH HOW MAD !!!! I AM!!! Bruce would NOT say that shit. Implying that jason wasnt his son, or that jason was only a casualty in a war, or that HE FUCKING HONORED HIM AND NOT THE CITY, OR THE TITLE OF ROBIN "He honored me" shut the fuck up I hate this and dont even get me started on the misconceptions of Robin in the first place. i dont want to go into the debate on whether or not they’re soldiers, which I personally don’t believe. but its just stupid because Jason considered being Robin the best thing that’s ever happened to him, and he was THE BEST. it wasnt his fault he was killed, either.
-The ending
So the mutant escapes his cell by going through a VENT. A . V E N T. AND ENDS UP IN THE SEWER. I hate that these mutants are just an army of evil people and have no motivation and the leader is just a brute I fucking hate Bruce calling him "son" And the mutants become the sons of batman who fight crime......??? because their leader is gone?? werent they supposed to be evil criminals with no humanity in them?
-Joker
Okay but Joker being absent the entire first part , only to show up in the end hearing news reports about batman, and then smiling as he stands up and just fucking creepily says "darling" holy shit that gave me goosebumps. another credit i have to give.

Elseworlds
Well, Tumblr isn’t dead yet and the CW-DC just did a big crossover, so I think it’s time to make fun of the CW........ for the last time.
Tumblr media
Did you know Tim Allen actually ended Home Improvement after season 8 because he knew the show couldn’t maintain its level of quality and was on the way downhill? Tim Allen has more creative integrity than anyone involved in the making of Supernatural. Think about that.
Anyhoo, lots to digest! Largely, this crossover felt to me weirdly lackluster and obligatory, like the whole thing was just a trailer for the oncoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. It just felt unambitious, which is the last thing an ‘event’ like this should feel like. In fact, it felt a little like I imagine the result would be of filming a bunch of people playing DC Universe Online. We visit Smallville and see Lois Lane! We go to Gotham and meet Batman...’s cousin, and fight a breakout at Arkham Asylum, complete with Mr. Freeze...’s gun and the Scarecrow...’s fear gas. Then, we wrap the whole thing up with an Evil Superman, because God knows, DC never gets bored of that.
-Petty nitpick department: Batwoman just standing around on rooftops looks weird. Not only does it give the odd impression that she’s spent the entire time between episodes just, uh, standing, but c’mon--you’re supposed to crouch. Or at least hunch. Everybody knows that!
Tumblr media
-Weirdly missed opportunity to have Ollie do the Flash narration, considering all the other opening narrations are futzed with.
-The whole thing is pretty much a glorified body swap--Stephen Amell is playing Barry Allen and vice versa. I can see how TPTB would be too pressed for time to explain a whole ‘nother continuity where Barry Allen became Green Arrow and Oliver Queen became the Flash, but still, it’s not as much fun.
-They also wholeheartedly borrow the thing of Ollie having to be happy to use Barry’s powers and Barry having to be mad to use Ollie’s ‘powers’ from the episode of Teen Titans where Raven and Starfire switched bodies. So, I guess, congratulations on making the central plot point of your crossover the same as a half-hour episode of a children’s cartoon.
-Remember that time Barry was too happy and too confident in his abilities, so his dad died?
-They got a good actress to play the Lois Lane to this Clark Kent, considering they both just look kinda awkward? His chin looks like he had a face transplant done and her nose looks like someone is constantly Photoshopping it.
Tumblr media
NHHHA, He-Man!!
-Don’t do a callback to Smallville, show. Oliver Queen has now spent more time in costume as the Flash than Tom Welling did as Superman.
-Direct fucking hit when Oliver said that Barry couldn’t take a crap without getting a peptalk from his team, but on the other hand, Oliver can’t take a crap without Felicity wondering what it means for their relationship. “Oliver didn’t tell me he needed to go to the bathroom! Why wouldn’t he trust me?”
-I’m just saying, last season on Agents of SHIELD, pretty much every character was in a relationship--there was not so much damn drama. It’s a fucking body-swap plotline, guys. You don’t need to treat it like it could lead to someone’s divorce! Really, at this point, if you’re in a relationship with a crazy superhero, you should be used to it.
-(Although I suppose I’m a little hard to please here, since over on Legends of Tomorrow they suddenly expect us to care about Constantine rescuing the love of his life when we’ve seen their relationship for all of four seconds. But hey, like I said, Agents of SHIELD manages a happy medium and finds time for Ghost Rider to show up.)
-For the post-apocalyptic hellscape they make Gotham out to be, the police respond awfully fast to disturbances.
-”We’re on the corner of Burton and Nolan!” Groooooan.
-Ruby Rose, everyone: the Less Convincing Michelle Rodriguez. It’d probably a bad sign for how compelling Kate Kane is as a character that everyone would rather talk about where Batman is and why Batman would leave. And, speaking as someone who both watched Birds of Prey and The Dark Knight Rises--Rocky, that ‘Batman Retires’ plot point never works!
-(Is Batwoman even that popular a character to get her own spin-off? I suppose she’s ‘TV show’ popular, but still--I think she’s one of those Batfamily members that is somewhere behind Alfred but ahead of Ace, right next to Azrael. And I do think it’s hilarious that TPTB were insistent on casting a real, authentic lesbian!!!--and then immediately got complaints that they didn’t cast a Jew. Oh, Ziggy, will you ever win?)
-I don’t want to be too hard on Ruby Rose here. Yes, she doesn’t showcase anything other than one mode: Snide And Slightly Pouty (Stephen Amell ain’t winning no Oscars, but he can differentiate between Ollie As A Civilian and Ollie In A Halloween Costume). But the writing does her no favors in making a case for this character as being deserving of any amount of screentime, besides the fact that she dresses like Batman, the guy we really care about. She’s a heroine, as are featured variously in every Arrowverse show. She’s queer, as is Alex Danvers, Sara Lance, John Constantine, et al. She’s rich to the point of having unlimited resources, as are (sometimes) Oliver Queen, Barry Allen, Kara through her billionaire friends. She lives in a crime-ridden hellhole, as Ollie has done for several seasons. What makes any of this compelling? The Gotham setting? Arrow has already turned itself into an effective facsimile of that, to the point of having Ra’s al Ghul show up to make Queen into his son-in-law. Arkham Asylum seems completely generic, as does Wayne Tower. It’s all just a different part of Vancouver; who cares?
-Likewise, Supergirl, speaking to you as a TV show--you really should either be adamant that Kara is heterosexual or give her a weirdly flirtatious scene with Batwoman, but not both. I know you need, need, need to let the audience know Batwoman is a lesbian...
Tumblr media
Pictured: The CW subtly letting you know about a character’s minority status.
But c’mon. We’ve been over this.
-Speaking of minority status, maybe it’s not the best idea to let slip that John Diggle is an AU John Stewart. Yes, there’s ten brothas in the DC Universe, and four of them are actually the other six. There are so few Negros on Earth-1 that they had to make Barack Obama into a superhero. The Batfamily has two black folks and they’re both related to Lucius Fox. There’s so few black people in Metropolis that Black Lightning knows who his father is!
Tumblr media
Folks, the DC Universe is so white, the Black Lanterns are all dead. The DC Universe is so white, they don’t even have black Kryptonite. The DC Universe is so white, even Black Condor is a honky. The DC Universe is so white, they don’t even need a Justice League of Africa, they just have a Batman of Africa! The DC Universe is so white, the blackest guy on the Justice League is a refrigerator with one-half of a brother’s face on top of it. The DC Universe is so white, they named the black woman on the Teen Titans after a bug that’s half yellow! Now Milestone, the Milestone Universe is black. It’s so black, Aquaman is the most powerful superhero there, because he’s the only one who can swim!
(-I’m planning on being chased off of Tumblr like Indiana Jones after he snags an ancient artifact.)
Tumblr media
-Would it be that hard for them to go to Arkham and run into the Ventriloquist or Orca or someone memorable, so long as they have access to the Batman toy chest? We got, uhh, Lady Who Can Pick Up Gun and Psycho Pirate I Guess? Like I said, unambitious. Wouldn’t it be so much cooler if they got someone from Gotham to film just one little cameo?
-Also, considering the sex scandal these shows have had, maybe it’s not the best idea to joke about their EPs being depraved maniacs? (Was Guggenheim the one who actually got MeToo’d? Because if so, Dude--Not Funny)
-The show had to character-shill Batwoman so hard that Ollie and Barry stopped being fear-gassed just to reiterate that she is too an interesting character in her own right! (If the characters have all heard of Batman, wouldn’t they have heard of Batwoman too if she’s been an active vigilante more recently?)
-But who cares about four unstoppable superheroes teaming up when we can find out how Felicity feels about her relationship? Just a thought--if you fight with your SO all the time about nearly everything, maybe you shouldn’t be in a relationship.
-Long story short, Doctor Destiny rewrites reality again to make Barry, Oliver, and Kara into supervillains in a world where he’s the hero. He also makes the other characters into pointless cameos, and weirdly gets criticized by Kara for... not giving himself a sex-change operation by becoming Superman instead of Supergirl? He doesn’t have gender dysphoria, Supergirl. I thought she was all about trans issues this season?
-Like, I don’t know, if a woman used a magic lamp to wish herself President, would anyone criticize her making herself a lady President instead of a man President?
-I guess it wouldn’t be Supergirl unless they crowbarred in an extremely awkward girlpower message where Superman and Lois agree that Supergirl/women in general are more useful than men, despite the fact that all Supergirl did was the exact same thing as Barry, while Superman and Oliver fought Dr. Destiny, and all Lois did was call in a bunch of men as reinforcements and then need to be rescued.
-But like I said about being unambitious--wouldn’t it be fun to see our heroes be forced to team up with a few supervillains to save the day? Instead, we just have Cisco playing a villain (something he’s done numerous times before). They get his help, have a weirdly poor showing in a fight against Jimmy Olsen, get Superman’s help again, yadda yadda.
-We also get Superman proposing to Lois Lane. Yeah, considering they’ve been in a relationship at least since Supergirl Season 1, she’s carrying his child, and they’re planning to move to an alien world together, yeah, I should think so? I know Superman probably isn’t a Republican, but does anyone think he’d be so blase about putting a ring on it? Hell, if nothing else, he should want to tie the knot before Ma or Pa bite it. Couldn’t they have just made it that he wants to renew his vows with Lois in a Kryptonian ceremony or some such?

Batman at 80: Why the Dark Knight Still Matters
https://ift.tt/2JHaNx5
Batman turns 80 this year. We talked to Kevin Conroy, Bruce Timm, Scott Snyder, and more about the hero's legacy!
facebook
twitter
tumblr
It all began with two shots in the dark, pearls spilling onto the blood-soaked cement. No, it all started when the bat crashed through the window. Actually, it was when the boy fell into the cave. Maybe it was that hostile takeover at Apex Chemicals? Dozens of stories have shaped the legend of the Batman over his 80-year history, tales that have made the Caped Crusader arguably the most iconic character in comic book history, rivaled only by Superman.
When Bill Finger and Bob Kane put pen and pencil to paper for 1939's Detective Comics #27, they had no way of knowing that they were creating a new American myth that would captivate readers and movie audiences for decades to come. They certainly didn't expect their first Batman adventure, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate," to spawn 973 more issues of Detective Comics, let alone become a blockbuster franchise featuring movies, TV series, video games, and McDonald's Happy Meals.
But what bigger testament to the long-lasting appeal of Batman than March’s Detective Comics #1000, written and drawn by some of the best creators in the business? The giant-sized, 96-page issue featured stories by legends such as as Dennis O'Neil, Neal Adams, Steve Epting, Christopher Priest, Jim Lee, Kelley Jones, Paul Dini, Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis, and Geoff Johns as well as the current custodians of the Bat-mythos -- Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, Peter J. Tomasi, Doug Mahnke, Joelle Jones, Scott Snyder, and Greg Capullo. And that's not even including the excellent covers by Jim Steranko, Bernie Wrightson, Bruce Timm, Frank Miller, Jock, Tim Sale, and more.
Batman is only the second DC superhero to reach such a massive milestone, the other being the Man of Steel. What is it about this character hellbent on avenging the death of his parents night after night that has kept him at the forefront of our pop culture?
Tumblr media
“I think what makes him deeply enduring is that it’s a really primal folk tale,” Scott Snyder, who’s been writing Batman stories since 2011, says. “It’s a story about a boy who loses everything and turns that loss into fuel to make sure that what happened to him never happens to anybody else.”
While most of us aren't billionaire playboys with the resources to fight crime on a global (and sometimes cosmic) level, we understand pain, both emotional and physical, and a need to rise above it, even if we can't always do that. We sympathize with Bruce's biggest regret -- if only he hadn't made his parents take him to see that Zorro movie; if only he hadn't been frightened by the opera; if only he'd been braver and faster as the thug pulled the trigger. For Bruce, his crusade to stop evildoers comes down to replaying that single fateful moment over and over again and making possible a different outcome.
Yet, Batman perseveres despite all of this pain, which is why people flock to the character, according to Snyder.
"It's a story of triumph over your worst fears, worst tragedy, and about taking your loss and turning it into a win," the writer says. "There's just this kind of power to him that speaks to our own potential, the human potential, even when we're challenged by things that seem insurmountably horrible."
Snyder has spent the better part of a decade showcasing Batman as a symbol of hope for the citizens of Gotham, putting him through the ringer, reopening old wounds while also making new ones -- the writer even killed the hero off at one point -- just so that he can pick himself up again and keep fighting.
But the character isn't driven solely by tragedy. Who could hang with a downer like that for 80 years?
"There are the fun elements, of course, that are similar to James Bond, like the gadgets, and the cars, and the planes, and just the cool factor of his costume."
Tumblr media
According to Batman: The Animated Series voice actor Kevin Conroy, Batman’s continued popularity goes back to something primal. To the classically trained actor who was immortalized as the voice of Batman in the ‘90s cartoon, the Caped Crusader is a modern retelling of myths and stories humans have been passing down for thousands of years.
“He’s such a theatrical character,” Conroy says, admitting he was at first hesitant to audition for the role. At the time, he was a theater actor who'd never done an animated role. But when he read the script, the character clicked. Conroy recognized this story. “They were absolutely right to cast a theater actor, especially one with a classical background, because this is Shakespeare. They’re doing high drama. Batman is Achilles. He’s Orestes. He’s Hamlet.”
The tragic Greek character Orestes, in particular, was on Conroy’s mind when playing Batman. By that point, he’d performed several plays as Orestes, a son who avenges his father’s murder and goes mad because of it. By the end of the story, Orestes has gone through hell and back because of his thirst for vengeance. Naturally, Conroy brought that familiarity with Orestes to his portrayal of Batman.
“He’s a Homeric hero,” Conroy says of the Caped Crusader. “I think of it often when I’m doing Batman because Orestes is haunted by the Furies. He descends into hell. He comes back. He’s resurrected at the end, and I think so often, this is a very Orestial-like journey that Bruce Wayne goes on. His Furies are the memory of his parents’ murder. It haunts him through his life. It’s transformed him."
Conroy calls Batman a “classic character.” Like Orestes before him, Batman has become the protagonist of our very own mythology.
“He’s come out of such a fire and instead of letting life crush him, he turns that metamorphosis into something even greater than himself,” Conroy says. “They’ve been telling that story for thousands of years in different cultures, and this is our culture’s way of telling those stories, and I think they’re just as valid.”
Bruce Timm, who co-created Batman: The Animated Series and designed the show's iconic Art Deco aesthetic, is unsurprisingly most taken by Batman's look.
"I just think Batman looks great," Timm says during our chat at NYCC in 2018. "He's got the best costume motif in comics. Nothing comes close. He's dark, sexy, and broody. It's really intoxicating and compelling in a way that almost no other in comics can come close to it."
He also admires the durability of the character through the different eras of comics, from the Golden Age, to the sillier '50s and '60s stories of the Comics Code era, to the darker takes we're more accustomed to today.
"It is amazing to me how flexible he is as a character. That you could have something as silly as the Adam West show or the old '50s comics, and then you have stuff like Neal Adams and Frank Miller and what we did. And you know, even more extreme, [Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's graphic novel] Arkham Asylum and things like that. And yet their all kind of the same character. It's like that character can encompass all of those different things. He can do space aliens and serial killers, you know? Yet, it kind of works."
This flexibility has allowed plenty of writers and artists to experiment with the Dark Knight, creating different versions of the character over the years. There really isn't a definitive take on Batman. You can love the Batusi, Bat-Mite, or Mr. Freeze's cool party and still be right on the money about the Caped Crusader. You'd be remiss to call the character stale. The guy has done it all.
Tumblr media
"It's almost like he's a force of nature, in which stories can happen around him, and there's something primordial, maybe, about the character and the way he looks, as well," says veteran Batman artist Jock, who most recently worked on a seven-part miniseries with Snyder called The Batman Who Laughs. "You could put Batman in a new pose, and he'd still flourish, and I think those kinds of characters are very rare."
Tomasi, who is currently writing Detective Comics, puts it best:
"He's a character who can work across all genres. Somehow, someway, he can simply fit into every story, be it a war story, a western, a love story, a comedic angle, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, you name it, and of course any detective story you can possibly imagine."
Superheroes won't always be at the top of our pop culture food chain. It's inevitable that many of the characters we love today will fade with future generations, just as the Shadow, Doc Savage, Zorro, and the Scarlet Pimpernel did. Will we still be talking about Batman in another 80 years? We may eventually embrace new forms of familiar myths, becoming obsessed with new idols. But only a fool would bet against a character who's survived as long as Batman has. Remember, the Batman always wins.

The TV Show Trials - Batman: The Animated Series
Batman: The Animated Series is an animated television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman. Developed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski and produced by Warner Bros Entertainment.
Tumblr media
Bonus review of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm at the end!
Batman and Robin, a pair of caped crusaders, battle crime in Gotham City.
Tumblr media
Almost Got ‘Im
Tumblr media
In a bar, a collection of Batman’s enemies chat about their failed attempts to kill him.
This episode is formatted as a clip show, providing four stories on top of the main plot of the episode. This episode was a great filler as it showcased so many villains including The Penguin who I, unfortunately, didn’t watch a whole episode dedicated towards.
Heart of Ice
Tumblr media
Batman must stop a vengeful Mr Freeze from fulfilling his vendetta against a callous business man.
Heart of Ice was the first episode I watched and I think it was the perfect starting off point. I only found this out while writing this review, but this episode depicts an entirely different origin story for Mr Freeze compared to his debut; though the storyline depicted in this episode quickly became canon in all other media portrayals.
 Two-Face
Tumblr media
Thought the ever calm Harvey Dent puts on a happy face in his bid for re-election as Gotham’s District Attorney, he can’t still supress the psychopathic split personality of ‘Big Bad Harv’.
I really enjoyed this pair of episodes and how easy it is to sympathise with Harvey Dent and, to an extent, Two-Face. This series also includes my favourite, and perhaps the most iconic, design of Two-Face.
 Robins Reckoning
Tumblr media
When Robin discovers that the thug who murdered his parents is back in Gotham City, he recalls the vents of his life as a young circus performer and the tragedy that made him an orphan.
There are an awful lot of dead parents in the Batman franchise aren’t there? I loved seeing Robin take centre stage in these two episodes and watching how he came under Bruce Wayne’s tutelage.
Harley and Ivy
Tumblr media
After a failed heist, a frustrated Joker boots Harley Quinn from his gang and leads her to form a partnership with fellow criminal Poison Ivy. Both The Joker and Batman set out to stop the amazing duo. Little do they know, no man can stop Harley and Ivy.
I loved this episode. Besides The Joker, Harley and Ivy were the only other Batman villains that I had decent knowledge about and I loved seeing this iconic pair work together. The Queens of Crime being foiled by another woman was a nice twist that subverted expectations, especially for this series.
 Over the Edge
Tumblr media
Batman and his allies have their secret identities exposed and are now being hunted by the Gotham City Police.
Now don’t start complaining that this is from The New Batman Adventures and not Batman: The Animated Series, but given the fact that it was mentioned on eight different lists of the best Batman: The Animated Series episodes; it counts. I’ll be honest, I was somewhat confused during the first half of this episode, as I feel most first-time viewers would have been, but I am a sucker for the ‘it was all a dream’ trope. Though my only issue with this episode was seeing Nightwing with long hair; gross.
 The Demon’s Quest
Tumblr media
Robin is kidnapped, and Batman unexpectedly joins forces with Ra’s Al Ghul, whose daughter Talia has also been taken.
I didn’t really enjoy this pair of episodes; that is the only time I will say this. By half-way though the first episode, I found myself to not being paying any attention and ended up leaving the episodes on in the background; so much so, that I don’t remember anything that happened.
 Beware the Grey Ghost
Tumblr media
Gotham City is struck by a series of remote activated bombings as a warning to a ransom demand. Batman realizes that the pattern of the recent bombings is based on an episode of an old television show, the “Gray Ghost”. Seeking information, Batman visits the actor who played the TV hero, Simon Trent.
This episode revolves around an interesting narrative device that shows both a young Bruce watching The Gray Ghost and present Bruce solving the crimes. Another feature that I only discovered upon writing this review is that Adam West voiced The Gray Ghost.
Joker’s Favour
Tumblr media
An everyman schmo named Charlie Collins insults the wrong super villain on the road, leaving the terrified loser at the beck and call of The Joker. Two years later, he crashes in with Collins, who desperately tries to find a way to alert Batman to his master’s evil scheme.
This is an interesting episode, with the focus being on an everyday citizen who gets caught up in the crime world. Featuring Mark Hamill’s iconic performance as The Joker being the icing on top of a well written and entertaining episode.
 Perchance To Dream
Tumblr media
After being knocked out in a mysterious warehouse, batman wakes up in an alternate existence that’s seen Bruce Wayne lead a fulfilled life with his family and fiancée Selina Kyle. But Wayne’s inability of live the dream reveals his mind to be in the thrall of The Mad Hatter.
I quite enjoyed this episode, especially as it highlights how much of Bruce Wayne’s personality and purpose is taken up by Batman. I don’t know much about The Mad Hatter and his ‘abilities’ so which did leave me somewhat confused, but it didn’t effect my viewing experience.
Zatanna
Tumblr media
When the glamorous magician Zatanna is framed for a robbery during her act, Batman swings to her defence. Zatanna is grateful though a little puzzled by the Dark Knight’s commitment to prove her innocence, but the two heroes unite and use the skills her father, Zatara, taught them to expose and combat an evil illusionist.
I loved this episode, particularly the relationship between Bruce and Zatanna when they were younger. I don’t remember much of this episode outside of that.
 Trial
Tumblr media
Gotham’s deadliest criminals, The Joker, Two-Face, Mad Hatter, The Ventriloquist, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy among many others, kidnap Batman and put him on trial in Arkham Asylum. The Dark Knight’s only hope rests with District Attorney Janet Can Dorn who, despite her anti-atman stance, is forced to defend the Caped Crusader’s life as well as her own.
Another villain-filled episode I really enjoyed. I’ve always enjoyed the aspect of superhero media that delves into the moral and justice-based side and this episode fully satisfied my craving. That, combined with the story of a DA coming to term with Batman’s presence in Gotham makes for a great episode.
If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich?
Tumblr media
After being fired from Competitron; Edward Nygma takes over the identity of The Riddler in order to get vengeance over his former boss Daniel Mockridge. It is up to Batman and Robin to decipher the riddles that Nygma has been placing for them in order to save Mockridge from Riddler’s vengeance.
While writing this review, I did happen to confuse this episode with another episode featuring The Riddler; take of that what you will. Apart from that, I really enjoyed this episode.
 The Cat and the Claw
Tumblr media
Catwoman and Batman join forces in an attempt to foil the evil forces of a terrorist by the name of Red Claw.
The pairing of Catwoman and Batman has always been a great one and this episode proves no different.
 What is Reality?
Tumblr media
When the Riddler traps Commissioner Gordon’s consciousness in a virtual reality device, Batman must enter the villain’s construct to save him.
The only negative aspect of this episode is the dated understanding of Virtual Reality technology. Looking past this, this episode provides a great viewing experience.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Tumblr media
I never thought Batman’s origin story could get more tragic, but alas, this film proved me wrong. Featuring great animation, a compelling story, a darker tone compared to the animated series and a compact runtime of only 76 minutes, Mask of the Phantasm is a fantastic film that covers ground untouched by the animated series.
Rating: 4
Tumblr media
After watching Batman: The Animated Series, I now understand why it is held in such high regard by Batman fans. Its compelling stories combined with iconic characters and performances make for a viewing experience unlike any you will find among any other Batman media.
Did I like this show? Absolutely.
Will I continue watching? I would love to watch the entire series from beginning to end, but that’s for another time.

Alfred
We’ve seen a variety of Alfred Pennyworths on the big screen. Every actor has portrayed the loyal butler differently, but no one has quite played the badass Al quite like Sean Pertwee has. Who needs Batman when you have Alfred breaking jaws and kicking ass, right?
Pertwee’s inspiration is directly from the pages of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Batman: Earth One. In this version of the Caped Crusader’s origin, it’s Alfred who trains Bruce in martial arts and acrobatics to become the bruiser of criminals everywhere. He still remains a loyal and loving figure, but he also has a rougher edge that makes him a formidable and vital ally in Bruce’s war against crime in Gotham.
While Jeremy Irons’ role as Alfred in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice showed him to be a more hands-on partner than others before him, he’s yet to show off his fighting skills like Pertwee has. More impressively, Gotham‘s favorite butler doesn’t take nonsense from anyone, either. He’s handed down beatings to the series’ villains on more than one occasion.
It’s Got The Look
For all its faults, it’s hard to call this show ugly. Every episode features breathtaking cinematography and gorgeous backdrops. Unlike The CW’s Arrowverse, which does look like it’s running out of funding at times, Gotham never fails to be visually appealing.
The costumes and getups, in specific, deserve specific praise for being practical as well as outstanding. Even though Galavan’s turn as Azrael was a horrible writing decision, his outfit was sensational and comic book-accurate – that you cannot deny. Considering the style and look of all the characters on the show, you’ll struggle to find a snazzier program on TV.
The creators have also been smart in working with what they have. While other comic book series tend to rely heavily on special effects, Gotham stays routed in crime drama, rather than delving too much into the fantastical. In doing so, the story’s been driven more by characters and location, instead of crazy effects and green screens
Hugo Strange’s Asylum Of Horrors
Up until B.D. Wong’s Hugo Strange appeared on the show, Robin Lord Taylor’s Penguin would’ve taken this spot on the list. However, after seeing Wong’s turn as Arkham Asylum’s deranged psychiatrist, it’s difficult to ignore his faithful adaptation of the character back in season 2.
Unfortunately, Strange’s Project Chimera arc did go south towards the end, especially with the whole clone saga, so that’s a bummer. That said, we’d prefer to remember the good moments when he tortured both Jim Gordon and young Bruce, while manipulating everyone else around him. It was a long time coming, but we finally got to see Strange in a live-action version of Batman.
On a side note: if you’re a fan of Gotham‘s Strange, you should read Jason Starr’s prequel novel titled Gotham: Dawn of Darkness, which explores the villain’s history with Thomas Wayne. There are some interesting twists and turns there that the series’ fans will appreciate.
Matches Malone Killing The Waynes
One of the series’ most controversial decisions was changing Thomas and Martha Wayne’s murderer from Joe Chill to Patrick “Matches” Malone. Malone, if you’re unfamiliar with the name, is a deceased criminal, whose identity is used by Bruce when he needs to go undercover in the underworld.
While many will disagree with this choice, it makes sense from a closing-the-loop point of view. It provides Bruce with a stronger reason to use that specific identity, as well as simultaneously hate it. There’s a powerful emotional connection and reaction here, which cannot be ignored in him using that name.
Additionally, the confrontation between Malone and Bruce in season 2 is a defining one for the young Wayne. It’s a crossroads moment that ultimately shapes him on his path to becoming Gotham’s protector. If he’d made a different decision and crossed the line, he might never have become Batman.
David Mazouz’s Performance As Bruce Wayne
David Mazouz turned 16 earlier this year. Think about that for a second. What were you doing at the age of 16? For the past three years, we’ve not only seen Mazouz physically grow up as a teenager, but also develop his chops as an actor.
In the beginning, his Bruce Wayne was afraid – a child hurt and traumatized by his parents’ death. More recently, however, he’s transformed into a young man looking for justice and to make a difference in Gotham City. He’s gotten into fights, fallen in love, and found his moral compass. It’s safe to say that the boy is finally becoming a man.
It’s far too early for Mazouz to don the cape and cowl on the show, and no one knows if that’ll even happen, but he’s certainly earned the honor. Even if he never becomes Batman though, he’s been an excellent Bruce Wayne.
It’s Unafraid Of Having Fun
The first season of Gotham suffered from tonal inconsistencies. It took itself too seriously at times, while it delved into an overload of campiness as well. By season 2, the show stabilized and embraced what it was, becoming unafraid of having fun.
There’s an underlying serious story here, but it never forgets that it’s still meant to entertain the viewers every week. Whether it be through Harvey Bullock’s quips or the over-the-top villains, there’s a lightheartedness that keeps the show grounded from going full-on procedural TV.
When it doesn’t try to be everything – only what it is – Gotham is one of the most enjoyable comic book shows around. It’s not a perfect ten by any means, but it’s certainly far from boring or joyless.
The Evolution Of Harvey Bullock
While the lead of the series is undoubtedly Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon, it’s Donal Logue’s Harvey Bullock who’s become the GCPD’s favorite cop. His character may have a dark side and questionable past, but Harvey stands firm as a straight shooter and loyal partner to Jim.
As Jim broods and whines his way through each episode, Harvey is the one who gets things done. He’ll break the rules when he has to and looks for solutions when there are none. Also, it helps that he provides a little levity to the proceedings, since Jim is a bit of a wet rag.
In terms of character development, Harvey has grown tremendously to become an extremely popular figure. He’s deeply flawed and not quite hero material, but he’s one of the shining lights of the show, week in and week out.
The Falcone-Maroni War
Fans of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy are likely to appreciate the turf war between Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni that took place in season 1. At the end of the day, Gotham is a crime-ridden city, so what better way to explore this filthy world than through the battle of two of its biggest mob bosses?
Not only did it give us a glimpse of all the issues that the GCPD had in nailing the crime lords, but it also introduced us to the Penguin as the great manipulator of the show. The amount of backstabbing and double-crossing that took place kept us all on our toes, and we never quite knew who was playing who right until the end. It was exciting stuff.
In terms of crime drama, this arc still stands out as the freshest and best executed one on the show. If Gotham could get back to this type of riveting storytelling, it would be a step in the right direction to keeping it alive.
Redeeming The Live-Action Mr. Freeze
The last time we experienced Mr. Freeze in a live-action event, we received icy puns and Arnold Schwarzenegger having too much fun with the role. It’s disappointing, too, because Victor Fries has one of the most tragic origins of Batman’s rogues’ gallery – and he’s become the butt of jokes since Batman & Robin.
Thankfully, Gotham has redeemed the character and restored balance to the Bat universe. Over a few episodes, the character’s heartbreaking circumstances and transformation into the villainous Freeze are revisited, while we’re able to learn and sympathize with his motivations. Sure, there’s a twist that doesn’t quite follow canonical history, but the integrity of the character is maintained throughout.
Allowing us to meet Nora also proves to be a masterstroke. When the inevitable happens to her, it breaks our hearts and makes us mourn the loss of a genuinely good character.
Jerome Valeska
On a tour bus, somewhere deep in the heart of America, Jared Leto weeps whenever he sees Cameron Monaghan’s name. He might’ve never put on the famous makeup or rocked the green hair, but Monaghan’s Jerome Valeska was a much better Joker than Leto’s Ace Ventura-inspired gangbanger in Suicide Squad.
From the moment he broke out into a maniacal laugh to his brawl with Bruce in the funhouse, Valeska has stolen the show each time he’s popped up on our screens. His appearance in “The Gentle Art of Making Enemies” remains Gotham‘s best episode to date and cements him as an unforgettable villain. Don’t believe us? Just ask his legion of fans on Tumblr what they think of his performance.
What’s made Monaghan’s performance even more fascinating is that he’s never referred to, or confirmed, as the Joker – we just presume that he must be the Clown Prince of Crime. Make no mistake about it, it’s still highly possible that it’s all been a swerve and the real Mr. J could be someone else out there.

Whatcha Gonna Do When Hulk Hogan Runs Wild On You?!
New Post has been published on https://takenews.net/whatcha-gonna-do-when-hulk-hogan-runs-wild-on-you/
Whatcha Gonna Do When Hulk Hogan Runs Wild On You?!
The ’80s had been a decade of massive hair and massive personalities. One iconic athlete of the ’80s was a person named Hulk Hogan. One of the widespread wrestlers of all time, Hogan can be remembered for some main scandals out and in of the ring. Listed here are some details and scandals related to “The Hulkster.”
In honesty, most wrestlers had been impressed by somebody they noticed on tv. Hogan has gone on document saying that when he was a teen, he seemed to Dusty Rhodes, aka “The American Dream” has a supply of inspiration. Now Hogan is called probably the most inspiring wrestlers of all time, telling younger up-and-comers to understand their goals.
Hulk Hogan majored in Enterprise Administration again within the 70’s whereas attending the College of South Florida. Hogan discovered that music was extra appropriate for him and so he dropped out of school and joined a band. The identify of the band that he was part of was referred to as Ruckus, they usually had been truly a reasonably well-known band within the Tampa Space within the 70s.
On the subject of the Make-A-Want basis, Hulk Hogan is among the most requested stars accessible. The inspiration is thought for working with kids with terminal diseases to make one among their goals a actuality. Hogan has labored with them on 9 completely different events because the basis saved a document, believing that quantity can be doubled in the event that they saved data earlier than 1986. Go Hogan!
Would you wish to reside close to your boss? Hulk Hogan did for a few years. Hogan was the following door neighbor of Vince McMahon, the CEO of the WWE in Stamford, Connecticut. McMahon and Hogan frolicked collectively driving bikes and even understanding collectively. Though it could sound bizarre to be neighbors together with your boss, it seems prefer it labored out simply effective for Hulk Hogan.
Wrestler Randy Poffo, referred to as “Randy Savage”, or “Macho Man” appeared within the WWF (now referred to as the WWE) within the ’80s and ’90s, the place he was revered as one of many biggest performers to ever step into the ring. Hogan and Savage had been pals however had considerably of a rocky relationship. Savage suspected Hogan of dishonest on his then-wife Miss Elizabeth, and their friendship went downhill from there. In 2003, Savage carried out a diss observe referred to as “Be a Man” after Hogan refused to have a charity wrestling match with Savage during which the cash from the match was going to be given to a kids’s hospital.
Hulk Hogan had a number of names earlier than he turned “Hulk Hogan”. Some wrestlers change their names as a way to attempt to win over the followers or to maintain up with the instances and traits. Different instances, It’s as a result of they haven’t discovered their wrestling id but. Hogan’s first ring identify that he used was “The Tremendous Destroyer,” which appears becoming due to his measurement. The Hulk went by means of a number of different names together with “Terry the Boulder” and “Sterling Golden.” We’re blissful he stopped at Hulk Hohan.
The primary film that Hulk Hogan ever appeared in was Rocky III. Hogan appeared because the supporting character named Thunderlips. Nonetheless, Vince James McMahon didn’t need Hogan to seem within the film and thought Hollywood ought to don’t have anything to do with wrestling. But, ultimately, noticed this as a chance to introduce a wrestler to the cinema world and he was proper.
In 1985, discuss present host Richard Belzer had Hulk Hogan on his present Sizzling Properties. Hogan was on the present with one other ’80s icon Mr. T as a way to promote the primary Wrestlemania. Belzer requested Hogan to carry out a wrestling transfer on him (huge mistake). Nonetheless new to fame, Hogan obliged and put the discuss present host in a entrance chin lock. Hogan held him within the transfer and Belzer fainted. Belzer later sued Hogan for $5 million and ended up receiving $400,000 in a settlement.
Many individuals have trinkets that give them a sense of safety and luck. Whereas a fortunate rabbit’s foot or necklace is extra frequent, Hulk Hogan’s luck comes from sporting purple underwear. Hogan survived two airplane crashes sporting purple underwear and trusts that they’ll maintain him protected and produce him good luck. If I survived two airplane crashes not even sporting any garments, I’d in all probability by no means put on garments once more. Sensible pondering Hogan.
As a result of Heather Clem tape and its aftermath, which featured Hogan saying some racially insensitive feedback to her, Hogan was faraway from every little thing associated to the WWE. He was launched from his WWE contract in 2015 and the group made it a degree to take away him fully from their historical past. Nonetheless, there have been talks of Hulk Hogan showing at subsequent yr’s Wrestlemania, which is perhaps one other probability for the icon to work with the WWE.
Within the film traditional 1997 movie, Batman and Robin, Hulk Hogan was one of many individuals who was sought out to play the function of the villain Mr. Freeze. The Mr. Freeze go well with weighed 75 kilos, requiring a giant sturdy man to play the function. Arnold Schwarzenegger ended up getting the half. If there was a choice between these two to play the half, it’s any man’s recreation.
Again when he was referred to as Terry Bollea, Hogan was believed to be one of the best beginner pitcher within the entirety of the state of Florida when he was taking part in baseball as a teen. He was even scouted by the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees which isn’t an on a regular basis factor. Sadly, Terry suffered an damage in baseball and determined to not pursue it any additional. I feel he would have been a bit of too huge to play anyway.
Hogan skilled an enormous progress spurt at a younger age, however nobody might foresee the towering top he would attain as an grownup. Within the 70s Hogan was 6’7″ and weighed 295 kilos. His biceps alone spanned 24 inches. Surprisingly, he’s nonetheless across the similar measurement as we speak. That’s plenty of weight to maintain on for that a few years with out actually doing something with it.
At one level, Hulk Hogan was employed as a full-time financial institution teller earlier than getting into the ring. With a stature as huge as his persona, this was not the perfect job for him. Hogan stated he give up this job after two days. Are you able to blame him? His power and persona don’t match up with these of a financial institution teller. I’d be intimidated to go to the financial institution with him behind the counter!
Skilled wrestling has its share of magazines. Nonetheless these are principally strictly wrestling magazines, so it’s extraordinarily uncommon to see a wrestler featured on the duvet of a mainstream sports activities journal, not to mention Sports activities Illustrated. Because it seems, Hulk Hogan was the one wrestler ever to seem on the duvet of Sports activities Illustrated. In fact in 1985 when he was, he wore his “Hulkster” headband.
Within the early 90s, the WWE had its share of arduous instances. The federal authorities got here after Vince McMahon after a steroid scandal within the WWE surfaced. In 1994, Hulk Hogan was immune from prosecution as a result of he cooperated with the federal government, backed up Vince Mahone. He stated that the WWE CEO Vince McMahon by no means advised him to take efficiency enhancing medication, which saved McMahon from serving jail time.
It’s possible you’ll recall the George Forman Grill, with all of these infomercials that includes George Forman speaking about his new and improved grill. Nicely, Hulk Hogan was initially approached to be the pitchman for the grill. Sadly, he missed a name from his agent when he was selecting up his youngsters. Though it could have cool to have a Hulk Hogan grill, George Foreman did simply effective.
Hulk Hogan and Linda Bollea had some arduous instances throughout their marriage collectively. In 2007, Linda Bollea filed for divorce. Hogan was approached by a reporter with the St. Petersburg Instances and was requested concerning the divorce. Having been the primary time he heard about it, Hogan replied, “Thanks for the nice info.” Hogan additionally advised the reporter, “I’m form of shocked. You caught me off-guard. My spouse has been in California for about three weeks. … Holy smokes.”
Bob Backlund is a former WWE champion. Throughout his first run for the title, he was advised by Vince McMahon (Vince Kennedy McMahon’s father) to “drop the strap” (give the belt) to Hulk Hogan. Backlund refused as a result of he stated Hogan didn’t have a “respectable wrestling background.” Backlund was a star athlete in highschool and in school. He misplaced his belt to the Iron Sheik, and in flip, the Iron Sheik misplaced the strap to Hulk Hogan. This marked the official starting of Hogan’s reign as WWF champion in 1984 and thus Hulkamania!
Affected by accidents is sadly, a serious a part of life in skilled wrestling. These accidents stack up through the years, and lots of wrestlers find yourself utilizing wheelchairs and having issues afterward in life. Hogan too has had his fair proportion of accidents from the game, and in 2013, Hulk Hogan sued the Laser Backbone Institute for $50 million after happening in top, from 6’eight” to six’four” due to so many procedures on his backbone.
There are various well-known trainers within the wrestling world: Eddie Sharkey, Shawn Michaels, Verne Gagne, Stu Hart, the listing goes on and on. One among these trainers was a person by the identify of Hiro Matsuda (July 22, 1937 – November 27, 1999). On Hogan’s first day of coaching, Matsuda purposefully broke Hogan’s leg. This didn’t deter Hogan as he returned to the fitness center months later and once more had Matsuda as his coach. The grasp coach reasoned that tough coaching was to “defend the enterprise” so that somebody who give up wouldn’t say that wrestling is “pretend.” Wow.
The game wrestling is among the hardest sports activities for any athlete. Wrestlers incur main accidents and most find yourself disabled later in life. Resulting from quite a few accidents suffered all through the years, together with a spinal wire damage, torn knee cap, injured again and an injured hip, Hogan has misplaced an unlimited quantity of weight and muscle mass. Though followers might inform he’s slimmed down, announcers nonetheless launched Hogan at 300+ kilos. As talked about, the wrestler additionally decreased in top by four inches after a number of spinal surgical procedures.
There was hypothesis amongst wrestlers and followers alike concerning the relationship between Jesse Ventura and Hulk Hogan. Some folks, resembling managing legend Bobby Heenan, claimed that Ventura had all the time wished to wrestle Hulk Hogan. The reality of this matter is that Hogan and Ventura had been pals at one time. Ventura wished to type a union for wrestlers, and as soon as listening to about it, Hogan took this info to McMahon. Ventura has been bitter about it ever since.
Hulk Hogan’s son Nick Bollea was arrested again in the summertime of 2007 for reckless driving. Bollea and his pal John Graziano bought drunk and determined to race Bollea’s automobile. Graziano didn’t fasten his seatbelt, and after dropping management on the moist highway Bollea’s automobile crashed right into a tree. Graziano ended up with severe accidents, leading to mind harm and two years of hospitalization.
For a few years, Hulk Hogan was referred to as “The Immortal Hulk Hogan.” So why was he immortal? Hulk Hogan was recognized for what was referred to as “no promoting” in wrestling. No promoting signifies that a wrestler doesn’t reply to a wrestler’s offense, thus not being affected by it. When a wrestler would use their ending maneuver on Hulk Hogan, Hogan would lie within the ring as if he had been harm. He would then rise as if he had been ”immortal” and make a comeback on his opponent and win the match.
What does Hulk Hogan need to do with Marvel Comics? Unknown to many, there was a protracted ongoing struggle with Marvel Comics and Hulk Hogan. For starters, “The Hulk” is an iconic comedian ebook character created by Marvel Comics someday within the 60s. Hogan began utilizing the Hulk identify within the 70s. Marvel says that Hogan utilizing the identify “Hulk” infringes on their rights. The WWE licensed the identify “Hulk” in 1985 nevertheless it expired in 2004.
Earlier than Terry Bolleta turned Hulk Hogan, he was a musician. He was part of a Tampa-based band referred to as Ruckus, shredding on the guitar. Hogan claimed that Lars Ulrich, drummer of the band Metallica, requested him to play bass for Metallica. Ulrich stated that he doesn’t know Hulk Hogan and doesn’t bear in mind ever assembly him. So, possibly it was a joke, or possibly Hogan actually thought he was that good.
After the divorce between Linda Bollea and Hulk Hogan, the Hulkster went into despair. His spouse bought a lot of the property and he or she began relationship a 19-year-old. Whereas sitting in his empty home on a drug binge, sadly Hogan contemplated suicide. Out of the blue, Laila Ali, skilled boxer and daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali referred to as and Hogan opened as much as her. Laila intervened simply in time and stopped Hogan from doing the unthinkable.
The WWE has been round because the early 50s. There have been a number of identify adjustments alongside the way in which and it will definitely turned the WWF. Due to Vince McMahon making wrestling a industrial success, Hulk Hogan is probably the most recognizable identify and determine within the historical past of wrestling. There in all probability isn’t anybody born earlier than 2010 that doesn’t know who he’s.
Though it was not truly an earthquake, and Hogan didn’t truly get injured, this stunt helped Hogan take a break from wrestling. That is known as a “kayfabe” damage during which a wrestler is pretend injured to allow them to not compete. The wrestler Earthquake put down Hogan from exhibits and story traces as a result of his spouse was 9 months pregnant together with his son Nick, so he wanted break day.
Hulk Hogan turned very nicely referred to as a “good man” in wrestling and was named the preferred for a few years, particularly in the course of the ’80s. He was the Most Well-liked Wrestler in accordance with PWI in 1985, 1989, and 1991. Within the mid-’90s he turned heel (turned a nasty man) and have become the Most Hated Wrestler in 1996 and 1998. Apparently, the wrestling group isn’t very loyal to their wrestlers.
Hogan appeared on a chat present with legendary bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno. Hogan was taller and had extra muscle than Ferrigno, who performed the Hulk on the favored tv collection The Unbelievable Hulk. Hogan then adopted the identify Terry “The Hulk” Boulder. A number of years later, Vince McMahon wished him to have an Irish final identify, and so the identify Hogan was born.
World Championship Wrestling (WCW) was a wrestling promotion that was based mostly in Georgia, was a competitor to the WWE within the ’80s and ’90s. Hogan was with the WWE within the ’80s, which was considered by many as the higher affiliation. When Hogan jumped ship to WCW in 1994, he was instrumental in giving the wrestling promotion firm the increase that it wanted to beat the WWE in scores.
Have you ever ever gone to a present and anticipated one factor however bought one thing fully completely different? Hulk Hogan was a part of a faction referred to as the NWO in WCW and had a feud with a wrestler named Kevin Nash. Folks anticipated to see a match, however earlier than the match began, Hogan pokes Nash, he falls, and Hogan wins the title. Lots of people had been upset as a result of they anticipating to see a match. Many believed that this was the beginning of the autumn of the WCW.
Hulk Hogan had mainstream energy, inspiring many kids, teenagers, and adults again within the ’80s. He even went so far as to have 5 “demandments,” versus ten commandments, I assume. These “demandments” had been 1. Practice 2. Say your prayers. three. Eat your nutritional vitamins. four. Imagine in your self and 5. Imagine in Hulk Hogan. Observe these easy steps and also you’ll have the ability to reside like Hulk.
It’s possible you’ll or might not recall that Hulk Hogan appeared in a cartoon referred to as Hulk Hogan’s Rock N’ Wrestling again in 1985. With Hogan as one of many prime stars of the WWE on the time, it appeared like a good suggestion to do. Actor Brad Garrett because the voice of the Hulkster within the cartoon collection, and should you look carefully, you’ll discover Hogan has a full head of hair within the cartoon. Not a lot in actual life.
Wrestlemania is just like the Superbowl wrestling within the WWE. The custom started in 1985 and it has grown ever. Maybe probably the most profitable Wrestlemania of all was Wrestlemania III, which included the primary occasion of Andre the Big and Hulk Hogan. In actuality, this was Andre the Big’s final go round as a result of his well being was failing. Hogan slammed the 530 pound Andre the Big within the Pontiac Silverdome which boosted this recognition.
Vince McMahon introduced wrestling into mainstream society with the Rock and Wrestling connection. McMahon drew in some main names of the ’80s resembling Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T into the world world of the game. Hulk Hogan performed a really huge a part of bringing wrestling to the forefront with Wrestlemania I, and continued to take action all through his profession.
In April 2012, Gawker media leaked video footage of a questionable tape of Hulk Hogan in mattress with Heather Clem, the estranged spouse of his pal Bubba the Love Sponge. In October of 2012, Hulk Hogan filed a lawsuit Gawker media, writer of the Gawker web site, and Gawker-affiliates. He claimed that the leaked footage was an invasion of privateness amongst different issues.
The case was taken to courtroom, the place Heather Clem cried, explaining that her husband inspired her to have intercourse with Hogan, however she didn’t know he had filmed it. Once they divorced in 2012, she requested that the tape be destroyed. Clearly it didn’t, and was leaked. On November 2, 2016 Gawker and Hogan settled for $31 million.

Batman Celebrates 80 Years: Why the Dark Knight Still Matters
https://ift.tt/2JHaNx5
Batman turns 80 this year. We talked to Kevin Conroy, Bruce Timm, Scott Snyder, and more about the hero's legacy!

twitter

Stargirl Villains: A Guide to the Injustice Society
https://ift.tt/2ZMmxp2
This article contains Stargirl spoilers.
The Injustice Society has been terrorizing the heroes of the DC Universe for over 70 years. Although they might not be as well known as their more famous counterparts, the Injustice League, and definitely aren’t as criminally insane as their predecessors, Shazam villains the Monster Society of Evil, the members of the Injustice Society have made their stamp on comics history. They’re also about to be discovered by a much wider audience as they’ve been revealed as the dangerous rogues in the new Stargirl TV series, which is airing on both DC Universe and The CW.
Created by Sheldon Mayer and Bob Kanigher, DC’s maniacal supervillain super-team debuted in 1947’s All Star Comics #37. This makes them one of the earliest supervillain teams in comicdom, though they were beaten out by Mister Mind’s Monster Society four years earlier. Seeing as we’re having fun with comic book history here, I’m going to point out that the Injustice Society and Monster Society were both predated by another team of bad guys who were the first ever super-villain team, and the reason they’re relevant is that they faced off with the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy too!
In 1941’s Leading Comics #1, Green Arrow, Speedy, Shining Knight, Star-Spangled Kid (and his striped sidekick), Vigilante, and Crimson Avenger took on a group of villains collected by a man known only as the Hand, introducing the first real supervillain team! Alas, the gathering of villains was never named. Although the heroes who fought them would unite to become the Seven Soldiers of Victory, this original evil team of foes was forgotten.
But evil cannot be defeated so easily and seven years later the Injustice Society would be born. Why were they created? Well, that’s still unclear. But when All Star Comics #37 hit shelves, they were already trying to take over the world. On a striking cover that showcased the villainous team portioning out a map of the United States with knives, the famed heroes of the JSA were shackled to the walls behind the Injustice Society. In some classic Golden Age shenanigans the team was assembled by the Wizard, who utilized them to capture the Justice Society of America.
The original lineup differed pretty significantly from the antagonists of Stargirl, with the Wizard joined by Brain Wave (both of whom have made their way to the show), Vandal Savage, and lesser knowns like the Gambler (he’s here too), the Thinker (who you may remember from The Flash season 4), and Per Degaton.
With all of that history dug up, let’s get to the matter at hand: the Injustice League as they exist in the world of Stargirl. The most interesting thing is that just like the series is re-imagining their own Justice Society they’re also setting up the legacy versions of some of the Injustice Society’s villains too. Most of this section will be focused on the original versions, but as we’ve seen, the series is seeding new versions of these characters as well.
Icicle
The leader of Stargirl‘s Injustice Society is Joar Mahkent (Neil Jackson). In the show we know little about the character except that he killed Starman, he’s European like his comics counterpart, and he has recently moved back to Blue Valley at the behest of Brain Wave.
Despite the fact that he wasn’t in the first comics iteration of the team, he was introduced in the same year in All-American Comics #90. In the pages of that book he uses a Cold Gun similar to the weapons that Mr. Freeze and Captain Cold use, but in the show he seems to have powers more like those of his son, Cameron.

Stargirl: Who are the Justice Society Members?
By Mike Cecchini
The only child of Joar Mahkent, Cameron takes on the mantle of Icicle. But due to his father’s excessive exposure to his own Cold Gun, Cameron’s genetics enable him to turn to ice without any aid.
Speaking of Cameron (Hunter Sansone), he’s already been introduced to viewers of Stargirl, so it’s possible that he’ll be heading up the young Injustice Society when they inevitably assemble.
Brain Wave
Henry King Sr. is the ginger telekinetic who spent the first few episodes causing havoc for the familial super team. First introduced in 1943’s All-Star Comics #15, Henry has long been battling the Justice Society of America. He’s also one of the founding members of the original comic book Injustice Society.
But there’s also the matter of his son Henry King Jr. (Jake Austin Walker). During his stint as Brain Wave in the comics, Jr. tried to reinvent himself as a hero only to lose his mind when his father died, eventually becoming a villain. Could we possibly see him develop powers here? The show seems to be hinting at this in recent episodes. If we’re going by comic book history it’s not the craziest leap.
The Wizard
William Asmodeus Zard (Joe Knezevich) is a genius. He’s also a talented magician who trained under a mystic in Tibet who he later murdered. Like the Injustice Society he debuted in 1947, just three issues before his team in All Star Comics #34. We saw him briefly in the opening battle, but he was properly introduced in Stargirl episode 2 (before being dispatched in episode 3)
Solomon Grundy
Probably the most famous rogue in Stargirl is the iconic Green Lantern villain Solomon Grundy. Over the years the character has shifted–most recently into an anti-hero in the DCAU–but from what we’ve seen in the show he’s a stone cold killer. He also seems to have been controlled and imprisoned by Icicle.
Grundy first popped up in 1944’s All-American Comics #61 as the resurrected corpse of a wealthy businessman who was killed in the idyllically named Slaughter Swamp, located just outside of Gotham. Like his namesake, he lives a cyclical life of deaths and rebirths. Post-Crisis he’s mostly a Batman villain, and his resurrection ability is connected to the Elemental Plant magic of Swamp Thing. Here all we know is he’s big, bad, and an impressive digital creation. With Icicle back in the picture, Grundy’s ready to wreak havoc again.
Tigress
Easily beating out her other team members here for longest running rogue is Tigress (Joy Osmanski). The first iteration of the character appeared alongside Krypton’s blue eyed boy in Action Comics #1 as a foe for Zatara. However, the version we see in Stargirl is Paula Brooks. In the comics she was originally a heroine but Roy Thomas turned her into a criminal mastermind.
During her stint in the comics she married fellow bad guy Sportsmaster and they had a daughter named Artemis. She did eventually become the third Tigress, so we could see her on-screen iteration (Stella Smith) suit up.  Tigress and Sportsmaster are a delight on the show as over-achieving sports helicopter parents.
Sportsmaster
Speaking of Sportsmaster, Blue Valley’s favorite muscle hungry dad is Laurence “Crusher” Crock. In a hilarious turn of events he runs the town’s gym and goes by his Golden Age nickname Crusher.
Sportmaster first showed up in 1947’s All-American Comics #85 as an antagonist for the original Green Lantern. We’ve covered his familial ties in our Tigress entry, so what about this for a cool twist… could Artemis actually follow in her father’s footsteps and become the next Sportsmaster? It actually makes a lot of sense. In Stargirl episode 2 we see Paula boasting about her daughter’s athletic prowess and her hopes that she’ll be the first woman drafted into the NBA, and later episodes established that she’s the best player on the Blue Valley High football team. Could that dream not come true, leading to her disenchantment and villainy just like her father?
There’s also the chance that the American Dream project the Society has been working on is just a way to channel their children into super-villainy? This seems like a particularly likely route for Artemis as Stargirl seems interested in upending expectations, plus Sportsmaster had a rivalry with Wildcat who has established herself as a member of the new JSA.
Dragon King
A classic Star-Spangled Kid villain who was first introduced during the Bronze Age of superhero comics–1981, to be precise–Dragon King was a WW2 era Japanese spy. Here it looks like we’re getting a comics accurate version of the villain, who spliced his genes with that of a lizard becoming a man-monster in the process (notice how his eyes blink behind that creepy hood!).
Something that’s made the early episodes of Stargirl so special is the way the show embraces the colorful chaos of comics. The Injustice Society is a truly great representation of that, and if the show sticks to these outrageous origins, crazy costumes, and strange stories, then the Injustice Society could become a super-villain team for the history books.
