TISHJ BARZANJI
London-based artist, Tishj Barzanji really makes me understand something about luxury through space, color, and light. The artist’s love for architecture and interior spaces dances hand in hand with what also appears to be a love for fiery, atmospheric light—Like that from the setting or rising of the sun; when the sky offers up its most grand theater of intense hues.
What hits me from viewing illustration after illustration of Barzanji’s living spaces—With their high ceilings, long windows and doors, as if made for columns to enter and exit—Is the prestigious guest who might as well be given a key, the sun. Sunlight is valuable. It paints your home, or rather plays it like a pianist houseguest who unaccidentally discovers your piano. The full drama of a passionate sunrise or violent sunset is transmitted on the luxurious homes Barzanji broadcasts because the homes aren’t blocked by other buildings; because the ceilings are high, the windows as long as the shadows they lure, the rooms minimal and leisurely, not at all practical like an artist studio or factory.
The walls appropriate the sunlight, luxury sells this too. Makes it part of your home most breathtakingly. The grand hall of atmosphere, the ballroom where twilight moves about freely. Right where you dry off after a bath, or sip your morning tea, or even sit in silence after a lover’s quarrel. This capturing of the life-sustaining star--That breathes warmth, daily to the planet--In your habitat like a radio station, or satellite network on your television. Awaiting your engagement should you desire to give it.

I have an essay out today in the TEEN WITCHES issue What Fresh Witch is This? It’s my magnum opus Grand Unified Theory of Buffy; in it I argue that Buffy’s three significant lovers represent Freud’s theory of the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. I have been trying to write this essay for at least five years. I hope you enjoy! Link here! http://www.whatfreshwitch.com/issuethree/kickingass

Inspiration: Characters Influencing Style
By: Kaitlyn Tiffany
Léon: the Professional (1994) dir. Luc Besson
Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl, is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.
Along with this being one of my favorite movies, the character Mathilda has some amazing style inspiration. Her style is comprised of oversized cardigan, striped tops and of course her signature sun charm choker. Here are some outfits that remind me of her and can add some New York flea-market flare to any wardrobe.
The Matrix (1999) dir. The Wachowski Brothers
A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.
I have loved this movie for many years because of the awesome, late 90s vibes and dark cinematography. Also of course because of Trinity’s rad cyber goth fashion ensembles. Along with the affinity of shiny, black, leather trench coats and dark shades. There are many characters that you can use for influence in this movie and I also suggest watching the sequels because they can also give you some great ideas.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) dir. Edgar Wright
Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.
Literally one of the cutest and quirkiest movies I’ve ever seen. Ramona Flowers is a daily style inspiration for me and many others. She has a pretty big cosplay fan base probably due to her unique, punk style. Be your own Manic Pixie Dream Girl! Don’t wait for some random person to sweep you off your feet and “make everything better”. Dress with spunk, dye your hair a crazy color, and kick some comic-book ass. Also I’m in lesbians with her outfits.
The Addams Family (1991) dir. Barry Sonnenfeld
Con artists plan to fleece the eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long lost Uncle Fester.
This movie has some totally awesome spooky vibes that have been inspiring my style a lot lately. Halloween is my favorite time of year and watching this movie gives me great fashion inspiration. Also I am obsessed with Mortica’s and Wednesday’s style. They each have their own unique touches and for a girl who loves black but has a bit of trouble not getting bored of it, this film can give you countless ideas of how to rock your creepiest and cutest all black ensembles.
Romeo + Juliet (1996) dir. Baz Luhrmann
Shakespeare's famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona still retaining its original dialogue.
Esthetically, this movie is beyond amazing. The cinematography and art direction is truly unique and beautiful. This film can give you so much inspiration for your wardrobe and even room décor. I love the romantic vibe and the amount of rosaries, stained glass, and paintings that are shown (along with the rad 90s L.A. scene). Plus this movie has Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes (My So Called Life), which is always a bonus. You can incorporate Verona’s fashion into any outfit.

Issues Three
Complications With Content: Correcting Errors & Checking Assumptions
When checking what had been submitted for the next issue, after the writers deadline to ensure the project was running to plan, the client informed me that very few articles had been put forward. Unfortunately this turned out to be four articles that were suitable for print, as one of these was about ‘sex toys’ which I did not feel comfortable designing layouts for. I could have taken content from the website, but only three articles were current and I was reluctant to re use content so this left me with three articles for a 44 page document.
I asked the deputy editor, the writers and friends to create last min content for me over social media and in person. This all ate into the two week window for designing the issue. Thankfully all the articles were sent over speedily and I soon had almost enough for the issue.
At this point I turned to my design team, as I had postponed our weekly meet due to no content, to arrange another day to meet and any ideas for more content. They were all willing to be flexible and help out to ensure that there was enough quality content for the issue.
In the end, one of the design team had a friend who did not mind his personal blog content published and two of my design team were keen travellers so they undertook some travel articles as well as the illustrations for them.
Thanks to the help of the writers, committee and my design team I was able to collate enough content over two days, which left a good amount of time to get the design done .

When I Get Home
Scenes from When I Get Home, the music film project which accompanies the album of the same name, both released March 2019 by Solange.

“With this album, I had so much to feel. Words would have been reductive.”
Solange says of the feel-album follow up to her 2016 critically acclaimed and socially-conscious say-album, A Seat at the Table. The words were received by a mixed audience of music peers, friends, community, and even black cowboys. All in attendance at one of the nine film screening locations for When I Get Home, throughout Solo’s hometown, Houston.
The lyrics that do make it on the record, are often repeated, and holding a minimal place in the loose structure forum of styles from jazz to trap, funk, and electronic. The words mesmerize rather than converse or narrate, like a chant or affirmation. But what’s clear is that all points on the record lead back to the artist’s beloved H-Town. A celebration of home, of black culture, black-owned businesses and a reclamation of origin. Third Ward, the predominantly black populated district just south of Downtown Houston, where Solange grew up and mainly centers her experience, is currently undergoing gentrification and families still recovering from Hurricane Harvey might soon find themselves relocating.
So in addition to a chopped love letter, When I Get Home is also a hydraulic statue, a twerking afro-futurist telegram, a commemorative avant-garde huddle. Pulling in a focus to remind everyone what’s come out of Houston, what its people are capable of; to inspire young black girls of their potential and invitation to contribute to the city’s legacy. Working on the album on location and even collaborating with members of her old high school jazz band to explore the sound, Solange truly made When I Get Home with Houston. An experience that would likely subdue anyone’s vocabulary, preferring to instead humbly live and be in the music; to feel your way through it.

The most challenging spread
Images
Due to the very topic of the article, it was hard to think of images that would be appropriate. I settled on free images that were licence free on Google (the hearts, and anatomically correct heart) and took the photo of myself making the sign for ‘sex’.
I then edited the image on photoshop to make it appear more Lichtenstein in style, and added a colourful background.
Layout
This was the first spread designed for the new issue, I decided to continue using lines and the font discovered in the last issue ‘Bebas Neue’.

USSR & Socialist Urban Planning
A quick look at housing and city planning through a Russian Socialist perspective.
The Union of Soviet Socialists Republics, as the name would have you imagine, brought about a highly centralized socialist government, which among other things, eliminated private property.
The video talks a little about constructivism, some of the housing designs, and the micro-districts that would come to collect them as a self-contained community. It’s actually kind of impressive, during the height of Krushcheyov’s national housing program, for instance, 60 million citizens were housed in the eponymous 5-story Khrushcheyovkas. They were far from glamorous but the idea was ubiquity and equality. And because the micro-districts more or less contained the same amenities, all in walking distance, no neighborhood was generally better than the other.
