I put it down previously because I was too amused by how baffled they were by simple Chinese dialectics: Tixi vs Xitong. Systems of systems and discrete systems, and the fact that Chinese writers would refer to something as Tixi in one area and Xitong in another. An average of about 10 children per-day were referred to the Texas justice system for making threats in September.

More children are facing criminal consequences for terroristic threats in recent years, according to data obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

During the first full month of the school year, 316 children were referred for terroristic threats, according to county-level figures compiled by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

In many cases, a referral is similar to an arrest. The child is taken into custody and brought to a detention center. Children can also be called in to meet with an officer after a charge is sent to a probation department or judge.

The vast majority of terroristic threat cases involved boys. More than half of the September referrals were children between 10 and 13 years old.

Roughly 13% of Texas public school students are Black, but such students accounted for about 22% of terroristic threat referrals.

Shooters who carry out preplanned attacks are rarely Black or very young, according to data analyzed by David Riedman, a researcher and professor who created the K-12 School Shooting Database.

“It seems like there’s just a level of adult discretion missing,” he said of the September data.

Schools across Texas faced a surge in threats in the weeks after a 14-year-old fatally shot two teenagers and two teachers at Georgia’s Apalachee High School on Sept. 4.

Many reported threats were deemed non-credible by law enforcement.

Children as young as 10 were arrested in response.

Some civil rights advocates worry about this increase in criminal consequences for children who may not fully understand the weight of their words and who don’t have the means to carry out violence.

“Kids will say things sometimes. There might be asinine comments that come from kids – we all were children once, right?” said Andrew Hairston, director of the Education Justice Project at Texas Appleseed. “Even if you make a mistake, you should not be railroaded into this criminal legal regime for it.”

Law enforcement officials say that in today’s climate, they can’t dismiss any potential threats. So far 2024 has seen at least 35 school shootings resulting in deaths or injuries, according to Education Week.

Officials have emphasized that children must be held accountable for harmful and disruptive language. Every time ominous words spread across social media or the cafeteria, it terrifies students and strains police resources.

“We’re taking, as we should, school safety really seriously. You can’t just say ‘I want to bring a gun to school’ without having a consequence,” said Shane Wallace, director of the Texas Association of School Resource Officers.

State data analyzed by The News found the highest number of terroristic threat referrals in recent years came in 2023, the year after the Uvalde massacre at Robb Elementary. Roughly 1,950 children were referred during that fiscal year.

The impact of criminal consequences can be profound.

The News recently examined the case of a 10-year-old boy who was arrested and criminally charged after his teacher reported that he said: “Maybe I should bring a gun to school. Then maybe they will listen to me.” The boy, who has autism, said he was misunderstood. His family doesn’t own guns.

It took more than two years – and thousands of dollars – for his family to get the charge dismissed. The ordeal shattered the boy’s confidence and caused his parents to pull him out of his public school, his family said.

Stop Freaking Out About Gödel: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Incompleteness Theorems

So when I was in college, I noticed something a bit concerning: a rather large portion of people involved in hard sciences were totally unfamiliar with even basic philosophy of science. For example, when I talked to other science majors I discovered that the majority of them seemingly didn’t know the difference between a theory and a law. The most frequent definition I got was that theories are still somewhat uncertain, whereas laws have been proven to be true and are more or less never wrong. This is incorrect – first of all, a scientific law can absolutely be wrong. Throughout history, even well-established scientific laws often end up being modified or thrown out entirely as new evidence comes to light. For instance, it turns out Newton’s Laws of Motion are only accurate for large objects moving slowly; things that are extremely small or moving close to the speed of light behave by entirely different rules. The actual difference between a theory and a law is that a law has to be a concise description of how something in nature behaves that can usually be stated in full in one or two sentences, or more ideally an equation. For example, the Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases, or simply ∆S≥0. A theory, on the other hand, is an interconnected collection of ideas that attempts to explain a natural phenomenon or range of phenomena, and will make multiple falsifiable predictions. It’s possible for a scientist to devote their entire lives to improving humanity’s understanding of a single scientific theory – biology’s theory of evolution is a good example.

Now at this point you might be saying “So what? You’re just nitpicking at semantics.” I would argue that misunderstanding the theory/law distinction betrays a more fundamental lack of grasp on the scientific method. Once we start conceptualizing certain ideas, even implicitly, as infallible or otherwise not worth questioning anymore, we start veering away from the realm of science and into the realm of dogma. I have a strong suspicion that a lot of the weird STEM elitism that’s so prevalent these days is a result of widespread illiteracy as to what science itself is at a basic level – otherwise it would become obvious how ultimately inseparable hard science is from soft science, from philosophy, from art. I could go on about this for ten more pages but this isn’t really the topic I want to talk about right now. My essential point is that it’s very easy for people who are otherwise highly intelligent and highly competent in their field to lack proper understanding of its underlying philosophy.

The reason I bring this up is because I am about to argue that almost everyone is interpreting Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems wildly inaccurately. More specifically, I’m aiming to demonstrate that the idea that a mathematical conjecture can be “true but unprovable” is tautologically false. This is a misconception that stems from confusion over what constitutes mathematical truth – which is actually a philosophy problem, not a math problem. If you want to be able to say anything at all about truth or falsehood in this context, first you’re going to need a coherent and precise definition for mathematics itself.

Let’s start by trying to answer a narrower question: what are numbers? In what manner can numbers be said to exist? Can you look at a number? Can you touch a number? I can draw the numeral “4” on a sheet of paper, but that’s not really the number four, it’s just an arbitrary symbol we chose to represent it. If tomorrow everyone decided that we were going to switch the numerals for four and five (such that “5” now means four and vice versa), nothing about how math works would change, it would just look slightly different on paper. So then a number definitely isn’t a physical object like a proton or a chair or a planet. Now at this point you could argue that perhaps numbers are a property that things in the real world can have – for example, if an H+ ion has a positive electric charge, most people would agree that its charge is something that that exists in the physical world despite the fact that it can’t exist independently from the ion. Analogously, you can count a group of apples and always get the same results; if there are four apples then there are four apples. You can even use arithmetic to make accurate predictions about how many apples there will be if you add more, remove some, or divide them into groups. So you could claim: therefore, numbers must be real i.e. they must somehow exist in the universe independent of human thought.

However, this line of argument fails pretty quickly once you consider the fact that the all the rules of arithmetic change relative to how you happen to be looking at the problem. For instance, suppose you’re trying to figure out how many people you can fit in an elevator. You’re inevitably going to end up using the natural numbers – we can all reasonably agree you can’t have a fraction of a person (you could cut a human being in half, but they would cease to meaningfully be a person at this point). You decide you can cram about eight people in before running out of room, but then realize you forgot to consider the elevator’s weight capacity. If it can safely lift about two tons, then you’re also going to have to measure the combined weight of everything it’s carrying in terms of fractions of tons. Suddenly the math you have to use changes from discrete to continuous, which is a really important difference; there’s no way to have between one and two people, but you can easily measure a weight between one and two tons (say 1.5 tons), and then if you want you theorize a possible weight that’s between one and the weight you just measured (say 1.25 tons), and so on and so on indefinitely. This is all fairly straightforward, but it presents a significant problem if you want to contend that these numbers exist independently of human cognition. Which set of rules is correct? If numbers objectively exist then it logically must follow that any given number either can be divided into arbitrarily smaller parts, or cannot be. Do negative numbers really exist? As far as we’re aware it’s impossible for an object to have negative mass, and you certainly can’t have a negative number of people. Do complex numbers exist?

Another problem: the number we get when we determine the mass of a given object will be different depending on what units of measure we’re using. If we switch from using kilograms to pound-masses, none of the physical properties of the object have changed, but we’re now measuring completely different numbers. This is because mass is an objective physical property, but numbers are simply a system we’ve come up with to help us describe this. An object inherently has mass, but does not inherently have two-ness or four-ness or the like. Mathematics, then, is not an objective reality but merely a human invention we sometimes use to describe objective reality, somewhat conceptually akin to a natural language like English or Mandarin. Once we grasp this, it becomes possible to define math in a precise and consistent matter (and hence mathematical truth). All mathematical systems can be ultimately be characterized in terms of sets of symbols, axioms, and rules of inference. Mathematics, therefore, is simply the study of axiomatic systems.

In this context, Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems are less “existential crisis inducing mind-screw” and more “fairly intuitive idea that perhaps should have been obvious in retrospect.” The second incompleteness theorem can be approximately stated as: “for any consistent system F within which a certain amount of elementary arithmetic can be carried out, the consistency of F cannot be proved in F itself.” How could any system of axioms conceivably prove itself consistent? By the logical principle of explosion, we know that in any inconsistent system we can prove literally any proposition that the system can express, meaning an inconsistent system would necessarily be able to prove itself consistent according to its own rules. Therefore, it would be impossible for us to distinguish a hypothetical consistent math system that could somehow prove its own consistency versus an inconsistent system that could prove its own consistency due to some internal contradiction we haven’t yet discovered.

The first theorem states, roughly: “Any consistent formal system F within which a certain amount of elementary arithmetic can be carried out is incomplete; i.e., there are statements of the language of F which can neither be proved nor disproved in F.” Remember, math isn’t “about” anything, it’s a series of games in which you manipulate strings of symbols according to a set of made up rules. No axiomatic system is fundamentally any more real than any other; some of these systems we study because they help us describe things in the real world, some of these systems we study because they have interesting properties, and some of them we don’t study because they’re neither useful nor interesting (such as systems that have been proven to be inconsistent), but ultimately what determines what kind of math is used or not is simple pragmatism. Thus, the only meaningful way to define mathematical truth is such that a statement is true within the context of a given math system if and only if it can be proven with the axioms provided by said system. The idea that a proposition could be “true but unprovable” is equivalent to saying that a statement simultaneously both can be proven and cannot be proven. A mathematical theorem is just a string of symbols; if you can produce this string within a given formal system then it is true, if you can produce its negation then it is false, and if you can neither produce the string nor its negation then it is undecidable i.e. independent of the axiomatic system you’re currently using. The first incompleteness theorem demonstrates that all relevant formal mathematical systems will necessarily contain such undecidable statements, but we should no more be upset about this than we should be upset about the fact that there are possible positions on a chess board that can’t be arrived at through normal play. If the math system you’re using doesn’t end up having the properties you want it to have, then the solution is to make up a system that does have those properties (side note: this is why everyone should just accept the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis as an axiom and get on with our lives instead of being obnoxious about it). The idea of “completeness” was always impossible and never really meant anything – it’s time to stop mourning Gödel and embrace mathematics for what it really is.

what do you plan on doing with your degree? how did you decide on your two majors? are you a double major? what year are you in? how are you today

hi! okay a lot at once but i will try to answer as well as i can lol. i am going to change up the order a little to better answer them. 

i am great today! i had an awful awful migraine last night and went to bed really early because of it but i woke up feeling so so much better. i am now at work and ready to get some shit done today bc i have three important tasks i need to complete before tomorrow rolls around and then i can just index the rest of the time unless my boss wants me to run to the courthouse to get some deeds or tax ids. 

i am basically a junior in college! so i basically did my first two years of college while i was in high school bc i took the opportunity to do college courses while i was in high school. starting when i was a junior in high school, i was a full time high school and college student! i started the classes the summer between my freshman and sophomore year and i loved doing those courses during my summer months. i graduated in may 2017 from hs and then went straight to college in the fall at a university, but then dropped out in march for financial reasons. during my uni time, i was working on classes that were going towards my major, which was english at the time but then i switched to education in the spring so i took a semester and a half of courses that really dont go to my majors now lol. 

BUT i am going back to school in january at the local community college to finish out my two classes i need to be a junior in college and i will graduate with my assoicate’s degree from that institution, and then immediately transfer to another one to finish off my bachelor’s. 

so whenever i go in march or april to pick my classes for my next uni, i will then declare that i am a double major. rn they only have me in the college of education but i will also be in the college of social sciences or whatever it is for psychology. i am specifically studying a branch of psychology that is basically child psychology but it is called “parent training” so it is more in depth to the social qualiities of a child’s psychology and upbringing. i am guessing it will be a major that will have me research a lot into the whole nature vs nurture argument, which i am very well-versed in lol. 

now, i actually chose my majors quite recently. as i mentioned before, i used to be an english major. i would have been probably for the rest of my education if i hadnt taken this one class at my last university. it was a senior-level english course that i weaseled my way into because it also had a volunteer work credit that i needed to graduate and i wanted to get it out of the way immediately. well, i fell in love with this course. it featured a lot of reading and poetry-writing, but it was mainly about education. the professor was an education professor who had been studying his field for years and years and so he had us read a lot of books about education and different learning styles and methods and diversity education and things like that. the volunteering aspect was us going to a local high school and having an art program after school where the students could write, draw, or whatever and express themselves creatively. 

reading these books about education and all the problems that are in our current system really interested me. i never expected to be so interested in it and suddenly, i was asking him for more reading material. i was reading everything i could get my hands on when it came to education and i talked to love about it constantly and he told me one night during one of our skype sessions “honestly, maybe you should go into it. you have always enjoyed tutoring and teaching and you tell me all the time how excited you are to go to the high school and talk to the students. i really think that this is your passion.” that was when i realized that it really was. i had always loved teaching and had always been so amazed by the differences in people’s minds. growing up, i was thought of as stupid when i was three until seven bc i couldnt speak. i couldnt understand language at all and only knew sign language. it just wouldnt click for me but i loved reading and writing and listening to people talk to understand new ideas. once i could speak, i wowed my teachers with how motivated i was to learn and participate in class. people are shocked now to hear that i ever had speech difficulties bc i talk so quickly and fluidly and never stutter but it was a long time coming for me. 

bc of that, i have always been very interested in how other people’s minds work. i love to hear about their ideas, even if i dont agree with them. i love to see their logic and their way of speaking and thinking and doing and learning. it is all so fascinating to me. 

so a few months ago, i decided i wanted to be an education major. i want to teach in the public schools for a while, specifically elementary students. i love seeing their enthusiasm and want to pique their interest in learning even more. i want them to understand that they actually do love learning and they just hate the way school is organized. it isnt organized or ran according to how they could think or feel. and that is my second idea. i want to change the way that we teach students. standardized testing? out the window. doesnt help kids learn and just teaches children that they are punished no matter what they do. it also punishes teachers for no reason. rigid class structure? out the window. doesnt work for a single student. it just makes adults feel like they are in charge. art programs? back in every single school. every child needs an outlet and the best way to allow for healthy mind development is through artistic expression. even the jocks may enjoy painting and reading and writing and drawing. everyone has something that they are good at and usually it is something more abstract than students are allowed to explore in a typical public school. 

the psych major comes in handy too to back me up. i want to be able to do research in child psychology the entirety of my career so that when i go into politics, i can show them my research. i want to publish it for all to see. i want to look into standardized testing, lack of art programs, high intensity sports at young ages, and learning styles. i am so excited bc for my uni for the fall, i have applied to the honors program so i will be able to do solo research at my discretion. that will be amazing and i will use that opportunity as much as i can.

Understanding Federal Action, State Choices on School Funding Amid Health Pandemic

Now more than ever, parents, families, and communities are reminded of the critical role educators and schools play in developing young minds, caring for children’s health and safety, and allowing our economy to function and grow into the future. Despite doors being closed for the remainder of the school year, teachers, staff, and community members are working hard to provide meals, emotional support for students, and distance learning opportunities. At the same time, highly consequential decisions are being made by Congress and state and local leaders that will have significant and lasting impacts on students now and long after they return to the classroom. 

It’s critical that Virginia leaders protect investments in Virginia schools – state K-12 funding has yet to recover from the last recession more than a decade ago – or it will be the students in the highest poverty communities and students who face the greatest barriers who will ultimately lose out. Here we summarize:

Gov. Northam’s proposed amendments to the 2020-2022 state budget, 

Federal aid from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) that must be maximized to protect state investments in Virginia’s public schools, and 

Lessons we should keep in mind from the last recession as we go forward. 

Governor’s Action on the State Budget

(Status: The governor has proposed to eliminate $50 million and suspend $490 million in state preK-12 funding for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school year - unless reenacted by GA in a future special session.)

This past week, Gov. Northam announced his plans to temporarily suspend an estimated $2.3 billion in new and discretionary spending as part of his amendments to the enacted 2020-2022 state budget. His proposal “unallots” these funds – meaning they will not be funded in the budget, unless re-enacted by the General Assembly in a special session later in the year. The governor had to act on the budget by midnight of April 11, but with the economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has elected to postpone the vote on most new spending until a later yet to be determined date.

The amendments strip out $50 million in funding for additional school counselors and leaves $490 million in aid for early education and K-12 up in the air for the General Assembly to act on in a special session. The unallotted funds include a substantial increase to Virginia’s At-Risk Add-On program ($61.3 million), which directs resources to school divisions with the highest concentration of students from low-income families. Other unallotted investments include resources for the Virginia Preschool Initiative ($91.5 million) and increasing students’ access to school meals ($10.6 million). These investments aim to strengthen support for the very students that will be most impacted by the missed educational opportunities resulting from the current crisis. 

Students of color, English Learners, students with disabilities and those living in localities with weak to no broadband services face additional barriers to learning during this time due to systemic inequities in access to resources. We also know that recessions are linked to students of color and students in households with low incomes falling further behind on academic assessments and college attendance. This adds to further harms caused by guardians losing income or employment, which we know from past recessions hits communities of color hardest. There are substantiated fears that this crisis will exacerbate the considerable inequalities Virginia already sees in student outcomes. 

To avoid cutting education services, at this time, state and local leaders should look to maximize federal resources from the CARES Act. The state should maximize flexibility in federal dollars to protect key K-12 investments that will support students that will face the most barriers when they return to school and to mitigate long-term impacts.

Federal Aid in CARES Act

The Federal CARES Act includes funds to state, local, and tribal governments with different allocations and required uses. The two main funding programs relevant to K-12 are the Education Stabilization Fund and the Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Education Stabilization Fund

($305 million in federal funds to Va. state and local school divisions)

The funds most clearly directed to Virginia’s K-12 schools come from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund – summarized here by Chalkbeat. Virginia is estimated to receive $238.6 million from this fund with at least 90% going to local school divisions based on their Title I, Part A funding from the most recent fiscal year it was distributed. The Virginia Department Of Education (VDOE) will receive the other share of these funds (up to 10%). VDOE is permitted to use 0.5% of the Relief Fund for administrative costs, and they have discretion over how they use or distribute their remaining allocation to school divisions.

These resources can be used for a wide range of services, that include (not complete list): 

activities to address unique needs of children from low-income families, students with disabilities, English learners, “racial and ethnic minorities”, students experiencing homelessness, and youth in foster care; 

mental health services and supports; 

planning and coordinating long-term closures; 

coordination with local health departments; 

purchasing computers or technology to assist with distance learning; 

purchasing supplies to sanitize facilities; 

any activity authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

In addition to this relief funding, Virginia will also receive $66.8 million as part of the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund. The state can award these resources to local school divisions or higher education institutions that have been most impacted by COVID-19 to provide emergency support and other education-related entities to provide emergency educational services. 

The state has one year to allocate the combined $305 million in funds (Gov. Emergency Relief and Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief) that can be directed towards education and K-12 schools. VDOE can provide clear guidance to school divisions on distributing these resources to help students who face the most barriers to learning during this crisis, while avoiding putting an undue data collection burden on instruction or support staff. The majority of this funding is being distributed to school divisions based on the share students they serve who live in households with low incomes, and the funding should correspondingly be directed to schools with a high share of these students.

Coronavirus Relief Fund

($3.31 billion in federal aid to Va. state and local governments)

The centerpiece of aid going to state and local governments is the $150 billion Coronavirus Relief Fund of which Virginia will receive $3.31 billion. These funds will be absolutely essential for ensuring that the state and localities have resources in the coming year to try to weather the financial crisis brought on by the health pandemic and sustain core public services like education, public safety, infrastructure, and safety net programs.

The CARES Act directs these funds to (1) “necessary expenditures incurred due to the public health emergency” from COVID-19 and (2) “were not accounted for in the budget most recently approved.” It’s critical that state leaders broadly interpret this language so they can respond to the entirety of the crisis facing Virginia families – in terms of both their physical health and their financial security. Many of Virginia's congressional representatives have already reached out to the federal government for a broad interpretation from U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin.

These resources should be eligible to help protect Virginia’s students when they return. The projected revenue shortfalls that threaten services to schools have been caused by the pandemic and therefore are necessary and incurred due to it. In addition, there will be almost no public service left untouched by COVID-19. Schools that have been closed will re-open and need to catch up. Months of missed classes, even with the best distance learning efforts in place, will no doubt contribute to learning gaps, and it will be students with the most barriers that will have the least access to remote support tools. Schools will need to make additional investments in a wide array of services, such as the recently proposed investments in the At-Risk Add-On program, school counselors, and English learner instructors to catch students up and keep them on track.

Lessons from the Last Recession

While Virginia’s economy had recovered from the last recession, state funding for K-12 schools was never fully restored. State funding was down 8% per student in the current school year that was just cut short by COVID-19. The funding adopted by the General Assembly in the last legislative session would have brought us close (3% below 2009 levels adjusting for inflation). The fact that Virginia’s K-12 funding has been unable to recover from cuts made more than a decade ago shows just how damaging and long lasting austerity measures can be during a recession. It's critical that state leaders recognize the harm caused by the choices of past governors and General Assembly members and choose a different path in responding to the impacts of this crisis. 

State funding cuts last recession hit the highest poverty school divisions almost three times harder than the lowest poverty school divisions. This happened in part because high-poverty communities have less local wealth and rely more heavily on state resources to fund their schools systems. Per capita property values in Lee County, for example, are almost one eighth what they are in Arlington County. When these divisions see larger state cuts, they are more limited in their ability to respond. This has also had a disproportionate impact on Virginia’s schools with the most students of color. Support staffing decreases were four times larger in divisions with the highest percentage of students of color compared to school divisions with the highest share of white students. 

Further, the structural nature of the cuts made last recession has kept them in place on a permanent basis. The support staff cap, like many of the cuts made in the last recession, were not one-off solutions that would automatically be removed when the economy recovered. Instead, they were permanent changes to Virginia’s primary school aid formula, the Standards of Quality, that requires lawmakers to go into the formula and remove. A UVA student succinctly made this point when testifying before the Virginia Board of Education as they last voted on the support cap: “It is not a temporary solution to current economic hardships. Instead, it is a permanent reduction in the Standards of Quality which will outlast the current recession.” We cannot afford to make that same mistake again for another generation of students.

We need to remember that the height of the funding cuts did not occur in 2009 when the economy was at its lowest point. Instead, the low point occurred years later in the 2011-2012 school year after the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds went away and the state had not taken sufficient action to generate new revenues to fill the gap. As a first step, Virginia must make use of all federal resources to protect education services. As a second step, the state will need to intervene and generate revenues of its own in order to protect schools in the years that follow, by asking Virginians and corporations most able to afford it to pay their fair share. 

Going Forward

By maximizing federal aid, making use of Virginia’s reserve funds, and learning from mistakes made during the last recession, we can buttress our schools against these headwinds.
