for a while i’ve been musing on the idea of ‘what if Brian Banner, Hulk’s abusive father, was actually an early super villain’ so here are some thoughts for that!

the first point is that my take on him is a mix of his interpretation from the 2003 Hulk movie and the way he’s been depicted in the current run of Immortal Hulk. On the one hand, you have a very manipulative personality who is extremely prone towards flat out constantly lying to everyone when he doesn’t have a self-serving memory; he may well even believe his own lies, in a very mundane way. The flipside of this is that, by combining his original depiction as someone who felt threatened by his infant son’s intelligence and his mother’s love for him instead of him, is an attention hog who desperately craves people constantly paying attention to him, lashing out and going to extremes to force people to pay attention to him, particularly Bruce.

Essentially, he’s a self-centered egomaniac who refuses to ever admit anything is his own fault: a standard abuser with a massive inferiority complex.

As for what he IS, again, I’m drawing from the Ang Lee movie, where he was presented as a combination of Absorbing Man (taking on the properties of matter, able to drain the Hulk’s power) and the minor antagonist Zzzax (an emphasis on energy draining and transformation from that); specifically, I’m suggesting making him be an AU version of Zzzax, with some elements of Absorbing Man. A key point here is that he is literally a leech, sucking away power and influence from others, a toxic presence that has little power on his own. What makes him dangerous is how ruthless he is, and his manipulative abilities. He CAN drain power from others and become as strong as them, but on his own, he’s not much more than a unpleasant person even the worst of the supervillain community doesn’t like much.

His powers simply leech things around him. Materials corrode visibly in his presence, though not enough to cause true structural damage, and he takes on their attributes as he does so. Energy and life force are sucked dry, causing things to flicker or weaken over time. Even grass and plants die around him, so that he’s a walking wasteland. It’s also a very notable inversion of Hulk; where Hulk bleeds, new life sprouts from his blood where it touches the ground. But wherever Brian Banner walks, things get worse.

I see two possibilities here, centering on the crucial point: when Bruce confronted him on his mother’s grave prior to his first true Hulk out, did he kill him, or not?

Option one: Bruce did not, though perhaps not for lack of trying. During one of the earlier times of the rise of superbeings, Brian was transformed by the same kind of gamma events that produced the Hulk’s other antagonists, into his present form; he sort of drifts from place to place, being an unbearable little wretch. He’s something of a precursor to the Leader, in that he’s a mastermind, or at least he wants to be, but lacks his charisma and genuine competence.

Option two: he’s dead, he’s dead as hell. Bruce DID smash his skull against his mother’s gravestone. But gamma is weird, and when the events began, it made a hole through reality, and Brian came through it; he attained a new form in the same way as Zzzax (an energy draining form, perhaps after repossessing his old corpse and rejuvenating it by draining the life force from others), and back from the dead, he’s out to torment his son and everyone he views as responsible for his problems (which is everyone but himself). One interesting possibility is that he’s a Ghost Rider antagonist as well; he’s not just a dead man, he’s one that came back to life through the wrong channels (perhaps related to the mysterious Green Door that the various Hulks have seen) and Ghost Rider is compelled to pursue him for that reason alone, let alone that his sins demand vengeance. The screaming wrath of the Hulk was born from this man’s cruelty, and wherever he goes he spreads more suffering and loss.

For this latter idea, it also makes for an interesting visual: he is a walking corpse. Yes, he’s regenerated his body and healed it, so he’s technically alive from a biological stand point. But he looks... wrong. His skin is this ashen, translucent color. His muscles have grown in erratic ways and are mismatched sizes, and he stares REALLY uncomfortably at everything, like they’re nothing to him. It’s a visual contrast with Hulk, who is VISIBLY a monster, but is quite peaceful when left alone. Brian Banner looks more or less human, but the closer you look (and the longer he goes without leeching something), the more wrongness stares at you.

As far as his place in the villain community goes, I see him as being an outcast that not even the worst of them like to be around; sure, there are some real monsters in the Marvel universe. Bitter robots with misanthropic streaks; actual bonafide Nazis (some made of bees, some just super messed up looking); mutants who are eager to screw their own people over to make a quick buck; superpowered brutes who dont care to do anything but hurt people for the funsies. But none of them like Brian Banner. The man’s a chidlish, self-centered abuser who refuses to ever admit blame for his own misdeeds, and to even hardened villains, that’s just... petty.

(Depending on how hard you want to lean into his scientific background, you can also make the argument that other science guys in the Marvel universe are at least vaguely familiar with him. It’s mostly in a ‘oh, that guy, fuck that guy’ sort of way.)

World View in Shaivism

Shaivism philosophy has been recognized as the best among all the Sadhana Paths that lead to self-recognition. According to this system mind is to be withdrawn from objective activities and turned towards the subject, which is the real self and has to be merged into it. We bow to that Samvit Devi i.e. Shiva's coordinating force or cosmic energy that is transcendental (independent of experience) and immanent. She is a quintessence of Shiva and is blossomed / projected into this universe through the manifestation of the divine shakti. The Shaivism philosophy teaches us that this entire world is the play of consciousness. Thus, one does not have to undergo any kind of difficulty to attain God. Forgetfulness of one's true nature is the mass of ignorance which veils the experience of the self. All scriptures and Sadhanas are simply washing away the filth of ignorance. They have no ability of their own to reveal the wisdom of the self because that principle is self-existent, perfect and always manifest. When a seeker becomes worthy of attaining the absolute, his mind becomes unshakable and contended. A fountain of joy wells up in one’s heart when one's awareness becomes stable. He looks upon everyone with love and understands the following: Harsh words are a sign of inner dryness. Self-praise is evidence of non-attainment. Cruelty is a proof of hatred. The idea of difference indicates the cancer of ignorance. Living in the midst of people, the seeker loves all but remains independent of everyone. He gives up all expectations. The principal scriptures of Shaivism philosophy are the Shiva Sutras. These teachings were revealed by Shiva and were kept hidden till the great Vasugupta disseminated them throughout the world. The Shiv Sutras describe three upayas or means of Sadhna i.e. Shambhava upaya Shakt upaya Anava upaya Shambhava upaya is the belief that the world is the embodiment of Shiva. The Shakt upaya is the process by which the mind and intellect completely merge into the inner self. The anava upaya is a dualistic as well as non-dualistic path because it leads to unity. It involves the use of body, mind, intellect, senses and Prana Shakti. Through Japa, meditation and other dharanas a person becomes one with Siva and attains peace of mind. We do not need to know the scriptures to recognize our parents. Once our mother shows us who our father is, we do not have to mediate on him incessantly or repeat the mantras of his name. We always know him. In the same way at the precise moment when one recognizes the inner consciousness, as prakasha and vimarsha one becomes perfect. This is the Anupaya or Guru-Kripa-upaya - the path of Guru's grace. This upaya depends on seekers worthiness. Prakasha (light of consciousness) or Vimarsha (its awareness) are the two aspects of Param Shiva. Prakasha is Shiva, the static aspect, which similar to the nature of light. Vimarsha is the dynamic aspect or Shakti through which Param Shiva is able to survey Himself, and cause manifestation and dissolution. Param Shiva or Para Sammvit contains various powers and its nature of consciousness, is the supreme principle. As per the first Shiva Sutra, "The self is consciousness". In truth there is nothing other than that conscious light, which is the ultimate Reality. This world is the play of that Principle - the universal consciousness. Param Shiva Himself, by contradicting his own will brought about the effects of three impurities: Ang mala, is ego. Maya mala, is differentiation. Karma mala, refers to the activities of virtue and vice. Enveloped in these three impurities, the individual soul falls under the influence of the letters or sound syllables, which are the basis of words. From these letters arises language, from language come ideas and from ideas comes understanding. The understanding derived from many factors, which contributes to the functioning of a human being, his body, his senses, his mind and various gross and subtle principles takes a form so that others can understand it. These letters arise from a source known as the matrika chakra. From the gross body to the matrika charka there is nothing but a group of powers and shakties. Shri Swami Vidhyadhar Ji in his hymn to Goddess Saraswati has described it like this: The physical body, which is made up of five elements, has to be understood fully so should the purishtaka or subtle body, which is composed of five tanmatras along with the mind, Ego and intellect. One should also understand the gross and subtle principles from Shiva to the Earth. According to the Shaivism philosophy, the universe is a form of Shakti, the supreme principle. Shiva and Shakti are one, they are not separate. A person, say a "Yogi", who has attained perfection considers the universe to be the light of his own self like the light produced by a flame. The knowledge of one's true nature (Aham-I) and the knowledge of the universe (idam - this) merge into an all-pervading unity. This is the understating that one should have. The knowledge of "l" is like a flame and the knowledge of "this" is like its light, which spreads everywhere equally. This universe of ordinary experience contains infinite permutations of consciousness such as in the form of manifestation of the material of the world. Nila blue is among the countless colors and forms that make up the objects perceived through the outer senses. Similarly, Sukha (pleasure) is one of the many experiences of inner senses. Deha (the body) is the basis of the both inner and outer experiences. Para - vital force is one of the many conscious powers that makes the body function. This way the universe is full of numerous forms. Secondly, these are called Pramana (means of knowing) Pramata (the knower - subject) and Prameya (object of knowledge-object). Shiva is both the means and the end. No other light is needed to reveal light, it reveals itself and other objects as well. Similarly, consciousness reveals its own nature and also gives us the knowledge of other objects. It is called Para Samvit, Param Shiva or Chetanaya. Param Shiva is as serene as a still ocean. In this state Shiva is transcendent (independent of experience). He is always filled with bliss. In his immanent aspect through the independent power of the supreme I consciousness, Param Shiva becomes the thirty-six tattavas and reveals the seven experiences from within Himself. Main aim of Jeeva (individual soul) is to, Bring self-consciousness together. Simple individual is known as (to whom all the three malas (coverings mentioned above) arise. After passing many trans-migrations or births an individual gets awakened to the knowledge of the identity of the soul with the supreme spirit. In case he still does not get awakened and gets entangled in cheap activities he remains bound by the fetters of malas (coverings) and the universe. When he throws out all the three malas then eternal ego merges and remains in "शिवम्य आत्मा स्वरूप" Being constantly in this state, he gets perfection. To conclude, there are three paths to reach to the ultimate reality: Devotion Knowledge Renunciation But, these three are meaningless without the guidance and grace of the Guru (called Guru Kripa). Bimba Pratibimba (Doctrine of Reflection) in the Shaivism Philosophy Bimba Pratibimba is one of the most wonderful principles of Shaivism philosophy. The universe is reflected in Parmeshwar who is Sat-Chit-Anand. Bimba infact is Pratibimba, the object and its reflection are identical. Shiva is the world and the world is in Shiva. Shiva and the world are not two but one. The principle of Bimba is true knowledge निरमलं मुकरं यद्वत् भान्ति भूमिजलादयः। आमिश्रास्तवत् एकस्मिन चिन्मात्रे विश्व वृतयः॥ Just as water, earth, etc. are reflected in a clean mirror without intermingling, in the same way the entire world is reflected in one God an embodiment of consciousness. The world, which we experience, is conglomeration of five elements. The human body is an epitome of objectification of the universe composed of five elements and all objects of the world have sprung from them. If we keenly refer to the elements described in Acharya Khem Raj Para Preveshka, we find these five elements referred to as space, air, fire, water, earth. These elements have five qualities viz. sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Every material object has these five qualities. A person has five senses to perceive and to reflect the corresponding qualities. Sound is reflected in the ears, touch in the skin, form in the eyes, taste in the tongue and smell in the nose. However, the senses do not have the power to perceive them independently. For this our senses need the help of the four psychic instruments and along with the Chit Shakti. As the strength of each sense increases, the objects are reflected and perceived more clearly and in finer detail. Yogis feel and perceive their finer qualities through "Sadhana". They have thus sharper and clearer senses of perception. A reflection appears in a mirror or on a clear surface. The mirror and the object reflected in it are different from each other although they do not appear to be so. Whatever be the size of the mirror, the reflection does not undergo any change, its size remains the same. Moreover, even if many objects are reflected in a mirror, they do not intermingle with one another e.g. fire and cotton may be reflected simultaneously in the same mirror, similarly cow and lion are reflected in the same mirror, the cow is not afraid of the lion and the latter does not attack the former. So, they do not intermingle with one another. The cleaner the mirror or say the surface is, the clearer the reflection will be. Importantly, if something is to be reflected, there must be an object, and that object must have a form. We see our face in a mirror but we cannot see the mirror in our face. Therefore, we can say that the face lacks the clarity to reflect. This is the case with the relationship between the external world and God. God revealed the world to us but the world can't reveal God. Therefore, we reach to the conclusion that, clearer our heart becomes, brighter will be the reflection of Shiva. In the case of mirror, there is an external object that is reflected, and in the case of universal consciousness/ Parmeshvera, it is its own ideation that is reflected. In the case of a mirror there is external light due to which reflection is possible but in the case of universal consciousness it has its own light, it does not require any external light. It is the light of all lights. Moreover, the mirror being non-consciousness does not know the reflection within itself. On the contrary the universal consciousness is self-conscious. Acharaya Yog Raja Analyses this in Parmarthsara as: अन्तर्विभाति सकलं जगदात्मनीह। यद्वत् विचत्र रचना मुकरान्तराले।। बोधः पुनर्निज विमर्शन सारयुक्तया। विश्वं परामुशति नो मकुरस्तथा।। Just as a variety of objects appear, within a mirror, even so the entire universe appears within consciousness or the self-consciousness owing to its Vimarsha or self-consciousness knows the world, but in the case of a mirror it does not know its objects. When we use the energy of an object and its reflection, we speak of a mirror as the basis of its reflection. That which is being reflected is separate from the mirror, but when it is seen, it is called a reflection. Thus, three things are involved, an object, its reflection and a mirror. When applied to God and the Universe these are not three separate entities. Shiva or consciousness is all the three - the object, the reflecting instrument, and the reflection. Shiva is the object and the universe is His reflection. The pain and pleasure, which arise in our lives, are experienced in two ways. One through inner remembrance and another through the perception of outer objects. This is the result of the vibration produced by our sensory perceptions. This pain and pleasure are reflections of some of the five qualities of the elements. These reflections cause a vibration in our sensory perception, which in turn produces involvements such as anger and desire. Once these tendencies merge into our Chitti, you will no longer experience any pain or pleasure. An enlightened being does not become attached to momentary pain and pleasure. He realizes that they are mere reflections. मत्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्ण सुख दुखदाः। आगमापयिनीऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत । -Bhagwad Gita II - 14 O, Son of Kunti, the contacts of the senses with their objects, which cause heat and cold, pleasure and pain, have a beginning and an end. They are impairment. Endure them bravely, O Arjuna. Everything that we know is simply a reflection. Whether it is an inner experience or the perception of outer objects, it cannot be anything other than a reflection. By contemplating these reflections, which are the source of duality, we understand the differences between them and the experience of our true nature, which leads to all pervasive unity. The understanding of the principle of Bimba Pratibimba In Shaivism Philosophy is very helpful in attaining this experience. Through it we learn to reject reflections, which are the cause of pain. When we have a firm faith that the universe is a reflection into Chiti and attachment and aversion are just in our consciousness, we attain the bliss of consciousness. Read the full article

The crash from the room Sherlock was in snapped her out of her not so deep sleep. It didn’t sound like a man falling out of bed; there was the distinct sound of glass breaking in the crash to let her know something was wrong. She went to the stand she had in this room, just like she had in every room in her home, and grabbed the tire iron in it. Not that it was an actual tire iron; a bit of glamour to hide the fact it was a cold iron sword. It had been quite interesting learning how to use it from an associate of Mycroft’s who was not Fae, but she’d never imagined she’d have to use it for it’s intended purpose in her lifetime.

Apparently, court intrigue was going to pervade her home, it seemed.

Mycroft was moving just as swiftly but she made it into the room first, seeing an ominous figure made of inky black shadows hovering over Sherlock. Sherlock wasn’t moving, but it was obvious he was still breathing, still healing. She made a slash at the figure, running the tip and edge of the sword through its midsection, and it elicited an unholy scream. A second later Mycroft was by her side, umbrella in hand and facing the creature as the brightest light she had ever seen filled his palm and traveled down the umbrella. She had to turn away as the light was nearly blinding, but soon it faded and the creature was gone.

“What was that?” she asked, breathing hard but not loosening her grip on the sword.

“That was a Shadow Mage. Capable of doing much magic we’re only partially aware of, but they can only travel in shadows and a bright enough light will tear them asunder.” He moved to his brother, placing the back of his hand on his brother’s forehead. “Still getting warm.”

“But why the broken window?” she asked, and her question was answered as she walked closer to the window in question. Tied around a rock was some paper, and she picked it up, unable to read the words. She wordlessly handed it to Mycroft and he got a grim look on his face.

“Sherlock was a test,” he said. “There will be more attempts, but it appears that since you can reverse what was done to Sherlock you should be able to reverse it in my father. But there will be more attempts to take the throne. By force, if necessary.”

She nodded and went to tend to Sherlock. He was still a bit cold but he was moving now, tossing in his slumber. She had no idea when he would awaken, but she wasn’t in the mood for him to have to be annoyed with someone fixing up the window. “Could you…?” she asked, gesturing in front of Mycroft towards the window.

He nodded, and the window glowed for a moment before it fixed itself. Mycroft looked at her, and then down at the sword. “You were quite adept at that in training. It’s good to see it works in the case of an emergency.”

“I had a good teacher,” she said. “There’s one in every room, and I keep cold iron in the car as well, though not anywhere where it will hurt you or Sherlock, I promise. It’s under the driver’s seat.”

Mycroft relaxed. “Good. I’m going to work on the wards on your home, to make sure nothing else can come in like that. And then...I suppose I need to eat. The rest helped, but I need sustenance as well.”

“Alright,” she said with a nod. She made her way back to her room, unsure how long all of this would take, and she put the sword back in its place and then laid down on the bed again, her eyes closing of their own free will. This was an unexpected complication, but at least the knowledge she could heal the king was something. But if this was going to be a protracted war, she wanted to make sure she knew as much as she could about every aspect of it, especially in her role as one of the Prince’s keepers.

But first? More sleep to help refill her energy reserves. She had the feeling as long as Mycroft was awake, he’d do his best to keep all of them safe...or die trying, which she hoped it wouldn’t come to.

Thank goodness we’ve got brave creative souls like Kent Monkman, a Canadian artist of Cree ancestry, whose indelible work helps clarify the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange. By reversing the colonial gaze and challenging pervading notions of history and Indigenous culture, Monkman explores the themes of colonization, sexuality, loss and resilience with exquisite skill, using many media and sometimes counter-appropriating the work of painters like George Catlin and Albert Bierstadt. This tongue-in-cheek turning of the tables has become Monkman’s signature.

This September marked the first anniversary of Another Feather in Her Bonnet, Monkman’s performance-art wedding extravaganza in which his sensational two-spirit alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, reclaimed a certain white feather headdress by “marrying” fashion’s most legendary iconoclast and champion of the cone-bra corset. Yes, Miss Chief’s betrothed was none other than Jean Paul Gaultier, the man who gave us man skirts and helped blaze the trail of gender expression, famously including Andreja Pejic and Conchita Wurst on his runways. He has been recognized by amfAR for his contributions to the fight against AIDS and received one of France’s highest accolades, the Chevalier à l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur.

Dude is definitely doing something right. But on the flip side, Gaultier remains a repeat offender, stealing everyone’s steez, from Hasidic Jews to Boy George. Apples and oranges indeed, but all Diet Prada-fodder affirming that fashion’s enfant terrible was in desperate need of a badass berdache bride to become his better half.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Art (MMFA) played matchmaker to the two provocateurs, having housed the world’s largest collection of Monkman’s paintings as well as Gaultier’s Love Is Love exhibit—a retrospective of his most memorable bridal creations, named in reference to Barack Obama’s statement in support of same-sex marriage and equal rights. But included in the exhibit was Gaultier’s imprudent interpretation of a headdress originated by the Plains People of North America—one cause celebrated at the expense of another’s culture.

“In my conception of clothes…I have always had a mix of cultures, so [the headdress] is an example of that. For me, it was not to make a joke, just as it was not a joke when I did a Hasidic collection.”

But to the Plains People, the hallowed headdress, or war bonnet, isn’t simply worn. It is earned, one feather at a time, each gifted in gratitude for honourable deeds over the course of one’s life. To be presented with an eagle feather is a sign of great respect.

The MMFA’s decision to engage Monkman to get engaged to Gaultier “was an afterthought” precipitated by some bad headdress press, says Monkman. The museum’s director general and chief curator, Nathalie Bondil, sent an email to Monkman with the subject line “WHAT WOULD MISS CHIEF DO?” (clearly the best T-shirt slogan since “KALE”), and from there Monkman concocted this most constructive spectacle.

The wedding was a private affair, which may explain why the world managed to sleep through the most significant fashion moment since Michael Jackson’s red leather moto jacket, a portent of fashion’s friendlier future and proof of humour’s ability to heal.

And so on September 8, 2017, the couple were pronounced lifelong “collaborators,” each pledging to “recognize each other’s culture and celebrate their individual uniquenesses as strengths” until death do them part. “Through the alliance of marriage, we learn to understand and forgive the mistakes of our partners and build true understanding,” Monkman said at the time. “And better understanding is really at the core of all my work.”

I asked Monkman whether he felt that the appropriated Plains headdress should have been removed from the Gaultier exhibit—or banned from the beginning—but his response affirmed that it’s time we stop sweeping such insensitivities under the rug. “You can’t police how artists draw influence from the world,” he says, “but you can create awareness about what’s cool and what’s not and how to collaborate and engage each other in a respectful way.” It is possible to “educate and develop sensitivity around cultural appropriation versus mutual exchange.”

Monkman clarifies the power imbalance at the painful root of appropriation. “When you have a dominant culture taking from a marginalized one, that’s where you run into problems,” he says. “Indigenous people have had more than their fashion stolen. They have had land, language, children—every aspect of their life and culture—taken from them. So there’s a lot of sensitivity when things are removed from their original context. People find that traumatizing; it triggers a lot of reactions that relate to these other thefts.”

The vows in Another Feather in Her Bonnet acknowledged the rampant appropriation in the worlds of both art and fashion and were perhaps a gentle nod to the groom’s career full of fashion crimes. But Gaultier isn’t the only one. In fact, “there’s a long list of designers who could benefit from a liaison with Miss Chief,” admits Monkman. “Appropriation happens all the time. We’re just paying more attention to it now.”

’Twas only four short years ago that Pharrell’s ELLE UK cover was thought to be stylistically sound when published, only to be slammed by an audience who was #NotSoHappy to see him in a headdress. And almost every year like clockwork, a Victoria’s Secret Angel takes to the stage in appropriated Indigenous attire. The list goes on.

I’d like to think that $h!t like this will soon be extinct. But Monkman is not holding his breath, citing another important factor fuelling the industry’s incessant recycling and ripping off: “The fashion industry is predicated on having to produce an incredible volume of material—new, fresh ideas all the time,” he says. “And in the quest for new ideas, designers often pillage whatever influences enter their sphere without thinking about what they’re doing. Appropriation is easy…stealing something as opposed to reinvigorating one’s own traditions or creating something genuinely original.”

So what are we to do? Monkman suggests that we reach out to the cultures we are interested in and speak to them directly. “Make the dialogue a two-way street,” he says. “Engage a young Indigenous designer. Bring someone up and elevate them with you. If you are going to take, give something back as well.” A great example: Valentino’s Resort 2016 collaboration with renowned Métis artist Christi Belcourt, who worked with designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli to turn her large-scale works into textiles. In an artist statement, Belcourt shared that “the sacred laws of this world are respect and reciprocity. When we stop following them, we as a species are out of balance.”

It remains TBD if Gaultier will swap his stripes for sensitivity, but it’s clear that humility is in for Fall 2018—if not forever—and if you ask me, the only real fashion faux pas is an outfit rooted in oppression of any kind.

Alex Mackeith’s debut play – School Play, at Southwark Playhouse from 6th February and running until the 25th February 2017. The play is set against the backdrop of an education system in turmoil, and asks what it means to be a Primary School teacher in contemporary Britain and was inspired by his time working as a tutor.

Oliver Dench plays Tom. Theatre credits include The Witch Of Edmonton (RSC), Romeo And Juliet (Permanently Bard), Hamlet (Revolve Theatre Company), Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo And Juliet (Reading Between The Lines), A Christmas Carol (Reading Repertory Theatre); and for television, Ride.

Oliver recently answered some questions about his career and School Play.

Q: What attracted you to be a part of this production? Oliver: Something I find thrilling about the work of antic | face is their commitment to their mission statement. Not only do they create work with a strong sense of purpose, they do incredibly well to begin to redress the gender imbalance that pervades not only theatre, but the rest of the artistic (and indeed non-artistic) world. I saw their previous show (‘For Those Who Cry When they Hear The Foxes Scream’) at the Tristan Bates Theatre several months ago and was very impressed.

I’ve also worked with our director, Charlie Parham, once before on a one-man show in Nice. I think he might be a bonafide genius. I’d jump at the chance to work with him again. And that’s not even addressing my interest in the particular themes of this production…

Q: What are your own personal processes with regard to ‘getting into the character’ and learning lines? Oliver: My Grandad once gave a lovely metaphor about acting. He explained that he viewed the process like gem cutting. Each human being is a large, rough diamond, or block of beautiful marble. Or something else extraordinarily metaphorical and pretentious. Inside that rough stone, there is a beautiful sculpture or cut gem that is your character. The process of finding that character is working out what aspects inside yourself are present in the character, and which attributes may need sharpening and heightening.

For Tom, in particular, there were a few things I needed to research. For example, unlike him, I didn’t attend a public school – I needed to find out what precisely that may have been like, and how it may have affected him. So I made sure to talk to my friends who had attended such a school, and some students who are currently part of one. That seems very obvious… because it is, really. You can’t start pretending to be someone else until you know who that someone else is.

In terms of learning lines, nothing beats speaking them out loud. Running them with someone. Annoying my housemates at home. Speed runs with the cast. I’d love to say there was something magical about it, or some trick through which you can completely circumvent the process, but I’d be lying. Repetition makes perfection. Repetition makes perfection. Repetition makes perfection. Repetition makes perfection. Repetition makes perfection.

Q: You play the part of ‘Tom’ – what can you tell us about him and how he fits into the storyline? Oliver: Obviously he’s the hero. No, that’s not quite true. Tom attended Winchester school, followed by Oxford. He studied economics and achieved a double first. His mother was a teacher at Winchester when he was attending. That much the script gives us. In terms of behaviour, he tends to find situations get away from him. Maybe he over-thinks things. Maybe he’s a little awkward.

He has had a few thoughts about the purpose of education, and how exactly this purpose fits into the system we currently have. A lot of Tom’s personal journey through the play is about how these ideas fit into the situation or school in which he finds himself.

As I’m playing Tom, I have to fight his corner and say that he really is in it for the right reasons; he wants to help the kids. His motivations are basically unselfish. Though I’m not certain every other character in the play would agree.

Q: What is at the heart of School Play – and why should people get along to see it? Oliver: School Play (as the name suggests) is about a School. It’s a beautiful work (that’s the first reason to go and see it) that very reasonably and realistically explores the issues being faced by the education system today (second reason.) Frankly, I’m still in awe of Alex MacKeith’s ability to explore the issues with such an outrageously fine toothed comb, while retaining a sense of realism, and even some pretty fantastic character development and story telling (If I were to try, it would probably end up more of an essay than a play.) I suppose at the heart of it, it discusses what it means to be a teacher, and the disconnect between the tumultuous education policies and their application. (One final set of parenthesis before we finish. This overuse of brackets is why I’m not a playwright).

Concerning why people should see it – have you ever been in School? Do you think they’re worth thinking about? Do you have kids who might be in school now? Do you think education matters? These are things we need to consider as a society. And School Play might just give us a great springboard for doing so.

Q: How much does School Play reflect issues in the current educational system? Oliver: Like a bloody mirror. Or, if we’re being pedantic, I hope I’m not ruining anything by saying it’s set in the summer of 2017 – so if anything, it’s ahead of its time. Alex MacKeith and antic | face’s research has been amazingly thorough. From what I can tell, and according to the teachers with whom I’ve spoken, the plays reflection is picture perfect.

Q: What do you hope the audience will get from watching School Play? Oliver: Like any great theatre, I hope that it provokes debate. The wonderful thing about writing characters means you can come at an issue from a number of different angles. I hope different audience members come out with different sympathies. Identify with different characters. It’s not the job of this play to be over didactic, or polemic (Charlie Parham taught me that word.) It’s the job to explore, and allow the audience to come to their own conclusions. Hopefully, people will come out debating. And maybe, if I’ve done my job right, someone might be fighting Tom’s corner.

Q: With regard to you personally, what do you find the most rewarding aspect of performing on stage? Oliver: There’s a wonderful freedom to performing on stage, which doesn’t really have a parallel on the screen. Of course, there are strengths to each medium, but it’s lovely on stage to try your best to inhabit the moment. It’s really hard. And I rarely succeed. It’s very easy to get tied up in your own headspace, or confused with how you did things before. But there’s something wonderfully rewarding about finally getting to a space when you are sure of your character, your place and position in the play, and you can simply react to what you’re getting from the other actors in the space.

I also think it’s especially thrilling that theatre, especially when dealing with new writing, has to be relevant. It’s difficult for it to be outdated (without an entire company severely dropping the ball) because it’s happening right there in front of you. That life that is given to characters in the theatre is something the audience pick up on, and something that makes theatre very special for everyone.

Q: Finally, What do you like to do to chill out? Oliver: Apart from interviews? I like normal things like reading and watching films. Two of my housemates are musicians in a fantastic band called Nubiyan Twist, so there’s always a lot of music around the house. I also live with my brother who is a puppeteer, so it’s fun to play around with things he’s made and have a go at building some. Also, all the things above are fun – that’s another of the things I love about acting. You get to delve deeply into the issues addressed in any play you might be doing at the time.
