Happy New Year!

Hello, all, and welcome to 2025. (Whenever you get here; I live in one of the first timezones to do so, hence the particular timing of this post).

Another one has ticked over, and from my perspective qua little bitty indie game dev, it was a pretty good one. I spent the first half polishing up Asphodel for publication, and the second getting a start on Blood of the Living.

If you're waiting on the next update, I'm going to try for January, but realistically, I'd imagine it'll be closer to mid-February. There's a unique scene for every RO/PO at the end, and those variations take a bit of time to get through. Nevertheless, I'm humming along at the usual pace and expect it to get there soonish.

I'm also working on something else, which might see the light of day at some point this year, but I'm taking it slowly, and only working on it when I'm done with my work on Blood for the day, so it'll certainly be a bit slower down the pike, so to speak. No public details for now, but I'm pretty excited about it.

On a more personal level, this year was quite challenging in a lot of ways, as I'm sure it was for many of you. To everyone, I wish a very lovely 2025, and my sincere hope is that we'll all be back here in another year: a little older, a little wiser, and with a little less weight on our shoulders.

After Neo Agent 3 defeated Octavio in the crater, he had completely disappeared.

In all honesty the Agent had forgotten about the DJ. He never showed up at any of the Alternan islands. Honestly it was impressive how such a big octopus could vanish without a trace. When Octavio had appeared again in the fight against the bear, the Agent didn't get a chance to glance at him. It was only when they landed back on Earth did they notice the fuzz that was smeared across half of his body. Before they could say anything, the DJ shooed them away as he scuttled to one of the storage crates that scattered the landscape. What a weird guy. When Neo 3 returned to the NEW New Squidbeak Splatoon base, they instantly got bodied with questions from Agent 1 as she shook them back and fourth by the shoulders. With a Dizziness growing in their head, they pointed towards the crate. A large thud emanated from the rectangular vessel when they did, what comical timing. DJ Octavio was in there, and something had happened.

When Callie opened the crate doors, she wouldn't have recognized the Octoling that was sprawled across the ground if she didn't recognize Royal Octarian Emblem that was clearly pinned to the old man's clothes.

Erm.... what the scallop.....

Some update or whatever

Hi. I'm still alive.

My sort of friend Tango, who I need to draw sometime, invited me and Hana over for the first night of Passover a few days ago. It was interesting. The food was really good and it was interesting to learn about his family.

The band has a gig actually due to this. Tango's mother was musing about some cousin's kid or whatever who doesn't have music for his mitzvah in a month and nobody's answering and Tango volunteered us. So we better pick whether we're the Fleabitten or Wayward Strays soonish and learn another song.

That plus me working on my WW2 project is pretty time consuming. I want to write something on that sometime because it's unearthing a lot of ghosts my dad tried to bury.

Basil's still in Faraway. His parents think it'll be easier for the move to happen in summer. Actually, my mom and his parents talk a lot on the phone. Mostly about my school.

Huh.

Oh, this Friday's Easter, but there's no plans yet.

Honestly, I think it's fuckin working? Nothing I expected to happen has happened, but I've found myself in a really interesting and positive position. It's a weird one, but I've got a story to tell, and some stuff to show off at the end.

So out of the blue, about a month ago, my friend and business partner found a random card game posted on a random tiny facebook group that he's not even part of. He doesn't even go on facebook often, really only to check on his family, but as he scrolled to see his parent's recent post he saw it. Who knows what arcane algorithms the ol' Zuck is working with, but it looked neat and found the right audience, so he told me and we tried it out. Really fun strategy/roleplaying card game with a digimon-esk vibe.

From there were joined the discord to ask some questions on rules we didn't really understand, see if there was more content coming out, just hang out and see what's what.

Long story short, we've become fast friends with the solo dev of the game. He's a really cool guy, just making the game he wished existed, and putting 110% of his time and work into it. I have stayed up until sunrise just chatting with him about all kinds of junk, game design included.

So far he's commissioned me once to do a quick 3d model design of the interior of a building, which he's going to use as a perspective guide for illustrations in the game, and wants more when he has the funds. He also wants to commission my SO, Silver, to illustrate cards and other stuff for the game once he has funds, and even license some of the fanart she made for fun, so it'll be in the games rulebook.

I won the first official tournament of the game, which was a blast, and the prize was some art of one of my OCs as a character in his games world, and it came out awesome. So now I have art of a character I've been writing in my novel for years and that's awesome.

The community is really small, but passionate and full of cool people making and doing cool stuff. One of the fans does a weekly "pirate radio" show that covers upcoming events and content, 100% in character as if it were in world. I've been helping him with that where I can, having a lot of experience in audio editing and a huge library of sounds and music to pull from. Today the radio host realized he used to watch my youtube channel like 8 years ago, and that was an awesome small world kinda moment.

So generally, yeah I think it's working. I've made very peculiar connections with some cool people, earned a little money helping a cool project come to life, and found a fun game to play, all from a spur of the moment decision to try a game a friend saw a post that found him totally by chance.

Time to pay it forward! If a digimon meets punk skater RPG/card game sounds cool to you, check out CybrFate. Really fun game, awesome art, cool little community, I'm personally having a blast. Games free on Tabletop Simulator right now. Physical copies exist and are being printed and sold in batches as a presale thing. There's probably going to be a kickstarter soonish, once the guy making the game finishes prepping the massive expansion he wants to launch with it. I've seen him online at 8am working on it, the man does not sleep. And if it grows I'll probably get more commissions from him too, so win win. If it does really well he might hire me and my business partner to make a digital version of the game, or maybe some other game in the world, which would be a lot of fun.

Robin's Buglit is named Keiri, and I did some work in blender to make her. I describe her as a Sticker Disaster 4 Year Old with a Taser. She calls herself the Princess of Stickers.

So yeah, that wraps up this update. Some weird stuff seems to be falling into place. If anything, this may be a good example of how weird the path magic takes can be. Like, didn't see any of the past month happening. Hope that all answers your question!

Writer's Room Update

Working on getting an official private Tumblr Community for us going so we have a space to write. FORM UPDATE: Most of us are interested in writing novels and fanfics, and have a good amount of skill / experience when it comes to writing.

Feedback, inspiration, and support are key topics that kept coming up.

I may try to find artists to pair up with us if they're interested...it seems beneficial to potentially have them gain income through commissions / publicity and us visualization of our characters.

The tone of the group will be semi-serious, but also lighthearted. Constructive criticism is key, along with encouragement and support.

Coming (Sometime?) in 2025(?): "Our Days Are Numbered"

Following up this post to say that I've chosen fanfic. I once swore up and down I'd probably never write fanfic, because it's never been my thing, so of course I now have to contradict myself, because now I Have Ideas and, as everyone knows, the first step to a brilliant and successful fic involves making at least one slapdash mockup "cover," (this is true for me and recording projects, so *surely* it must be true for everything) which I've also now done.

Seriously though, I kinda do have a plan. See, way back in a previous decade I decided to write a novel. Not a "real" novel, because at the time the phrase "vanity pressed" was much more pejorative than it seems to be now. But I did make a novel that I worked on really hard for about five years, sent through beta-editing, did the cover design, and even composed/recorded a soundtrack to play while writing. It was self published and sold about four copies, but it was still A Whole Thing.

What helped me do that was an idea I stole from Hunter S. Thompson (who probably stole it from someone else). Famously, HST wrote "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" as a cool-down mechanism while simultaneously working on a more difficult and dangerous Real Story ("Strange Rumblings in Aztlan"). In my case, all I did was spit out the occasional cringeworthy faux-Thompson ripoff political blog post, but those were fun, loose exercises to do in between the harder work of my novel's chapters.

Well, this year (as perhaps I've said too much already) I plan to complete and self-publish a second fantasy atlas. The first one (from 2022) was a massive amount of work, and this second one might not be as much, but it won't be easy. So I'm gonna try to do the laborious-big-work vs quickie-cool-down idea again—and this time, my cool-down's gonna be a Minthara fic starring her and my utterly ordinary swords bard. I understand that female characters are poorly represented among BG3 fanfic, so maybe this will help that.

Or maybe not! It'll probably be very basic-normie, because for better and worse that is me; I don't write salacious stuff well or often, and I'm sure I'll break umpteen Unwritten Rules of Fic. But whatever. I also won't pretend that a fic featuring a male human Tav and Minthara will get much juice in the Minthy fandom, let alone the wider BG3 fandom. And that's fine, because it would be my first one and expectations should be Very Low. It would simply explore some of the ideas from this answered ask about culture clashes, as well as this pricelessly inspiring jumping-off-point of a screencap.

Anyway, it won't be happening soonish, but when it does, it'll be linked here. Thanks in advance for your patience with someone completely ignorant Kool-Aid-Manning himself into something he probably shouldn't. But it's gotta happen at some point, because like I said, I don't make cover art for nonexistent stuff. I am, after all, a professional.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #269

I was going to try some Dead Cells today, but something unexpected happened and I didn't have an opportunity to devote a long time to focus on it. So I ended up doing other things, and that was good, too.

Once more, I did a lot of leisure writing today. It was... cathartic. Necessary. But time-consuming. It takes up a lot of my time and focus when I do it. And... given that it's just a pale imitation of what I am searching for, I'm not really sure if its time and focus cost is... prudent. Hm.

...There's so much I wish I could tell you. But I can't write it here and still have what I'm trying to do for you be taken seriously. I have to try to seem normal, at least for now.

...

It's not all I did today, though. At some point, J and I wandered around to get some errands done. He needed some things from the hardware store, I needed to get those meds prescribed by the sports medicine place, and we also needed toilet paper. So that's what we set out to do.

The medicine I got from the sports medicine place is called "celecoxib". I guess it's a kind of anti-inflammatory that works a little differently than ibuprofen, which is what I've been using on the really bad days. I'm supposed to take it twice a day for like a week, and then on an as-needed basis after that. I wonder if it'll help with the rib injury at all. Maybe it will. Or maybe nothing will happen. Or maybe something weird will happen. I don't know. But I took the first dose just now, so I guess we're gonna find out.

...It was a very fun movie. Silly as heck, but also a lot of fun! I can't say for certain whether or not you'd like it. But... as part of seeing this movie, there were previews for other movies. And one of those movies was called The Wild Robot.

...It looked very promising. Next time someone calls you a "cyborg", now you have one more wholesome robot to point to, besides Zeta from The Zeta Project. We're gonna go see it! You can bet that when I do, I'm gonna tell you all about it, and probably encourage you to see it, too!

It doesn't come out until sometime towards the end of September, though. So if you wanna hear about it, you're gonna hafta hold on and stay safe at least until then, okay?

...Apparently, though, this was a book trilogy before it was a movie. So maybe I'll get the books after I see the movie. I wonder if our local libraries have a copy... hmm...

...It's about 9:30pm now. J is trying to make that garlic pudding. The whole kitchen smells amazing to me as a result. I'm going to have to go to bed relatively soonish, though; I go to my bakery job tomorrow! I'll try to get some yummy pictures for you, okay? So please just hang tight out there, okay...?

...I'm worried about you and stuff. I know how things ended for you the first time around and I... don't want to see you get broken, bloodied, beaten, and slashed up like that again. Oh!!! Before I forget. Over the last several days, J and I got even more pictures for you. Suppose now is as good a time as any to send them along... J's cellphone camera takes really good photos of the moon, unlike mine. I wonder if you'll be able to tell which ones are his and which ones are mine...

...J keeps making the garlic pudding as I'm writing this, and it smells and tastes absolutely phenomenal. It's still warming, though, and it won't be set until tomorrow. Look forward to pictures of it at some point after my shift at work is all done, okay?

How drunk is rafe tho? Are we gonna see a return of chapter 1 rafe or is he gonna try and rant his way into shagging? Kie really opened the flood gates. There's no going back now no matter how hard she tries and I know she will. I'm also intrigued about the plot moving forward with the surfshop opening, the pogues/crown, mercenaries. I know sofia's already kinda clocking. The shooting scene has made me really want to see riara bregrudgingly working together and through their explosive tension.

nah, def not chapter one Rafe, he's too deep in his unhinged feelings for that, but in a way it's a more dangerous Rafe bc like you said, she opened the floodgates. she instigated something physical and reciprocated when he took it further and if that gun hadn't gone off who knows what would've happened, so he's operating with that very new and very blistering awareness. in terms of sobriety, he's not shitfaced but he's at that reckless level of drunk where he's more volatile and will react to things with even less restraint than usual, and it'll definitely lead to things. I'd say he's probably closer to how he was on shrooms, but less tweaking/fanstastical lol, and Kie is also in a super different place from where she was during that scene, so that changes the dynamic.

I'm also excited to reopen the surf shop! I feel like these past two chapters were the dedicated gothic Tannyhill chapters but now I'm ready to land somewhere in the middle (though I weirdly want to write a Tannyhill ball/gala for no reason other than vibes). re: the blue crown plot, I'm not sure I understood enough of it in the show to integrate it very well lmao but will def be integrating the mercenaries and Pogues soonish, as well as more of riara having to work together

Finished The Wolverine. People hate it for its ending, but I still like the film. It has some good, stupid comic book fun in it.

Watched another Doctor Who Serial, leaving me almost done with The Second Doctor's run, meaning that the big review I've been doing should come out pretty soonish.

Finished that Scooby Doo thing with my buddy. It'll likely never come out to the public, but it was still fun to put together
