The Intrigue (Brush Marker Test)

So per my poll from a few days ago, the first of my drawings made testing new supplies going up is this one! Thanks to a ton of stuff getting the glorious "Clearance" tags and stickers at my local Michaels, I finally got my hands on a 6-set of Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers, which I've been wanted to try for a long time, and thanks to a well-timed sale, I also finally got my hands on four sets of 6 and a 2-pack of the Winsor and Newton Brushmarkers that I've been wanting to try for an equally long time. I decided to put the two different kinds of markers together for this test because even with 26 markers by Winsor and Newton, I felt I was still lacking just enough colors to get a good range to work with, (this is also the reason I usually grab whatever markers from just whatever sets I have when I'm just drawing to make art and not to test specific supplies) and only having 6 Spectrum Noir markers to use...well, that would've made for a very challenging drawing, now wouldn't it? After swatching the markers out, I was really drawn to some of the colors in the Portrait set from Winsor & Newton, and after staring at my options for a while, I felt like drawing a long-haired vampire dude would be fun and get the best use out of the colors I had. So I did I will say that the one major problem I had during this process, and it's actually fairly obvious (although I did choose to accentuate it on the shirt) is that the markers kept smearing my lines. Which is strange and confusing because I used a cobalt Copic Multiliner, which is supposed to be "water and Copic proof." So you'd think since these markers are alcohol-based like Copics, that everything would be okay. Apparently not! My best guess is that this ink (mostly the Winsor and Newton markers; the Spectrum Noir markers seemed to fair a bit better) dries more slowly or has more dye/pigment in it, or something. My original thought was that I had just made some of my lines too thick, but then I had the same problem a couple of times in areas where the lines were thinner/their original weight, so there went that theory. (Although the thicker lines probably didn't help, but I did that before I knew that was going to be a problem and it wasn't like I could suck the pen ink back up to fix it.) Anyway. Other than that, I liked both kinds of markers pretty well. The Winsor and Newton markers remind me a LOT of the Prismacolor Brush Markers, which are actually my favorite of all the alcohol-based markers that I've tried. Other than visual differences between markers, and the Prismacolor markers having a brush tip and bullet tip while the W&N markers have a brush tip and chisel tip, the main thing is the tips of the W&N markers are a tiny bit softer than the Prismas, and the Prismacolor markers have slightly more friction on the paper; they "stick" a bit more, but it's a very very veeeeery subtle difference. My only issue with the Spectrum Noir markers is I'm a little concerned about how long the brush nibs are going to last. They seem like they could be in very early stages of desalinization--a thing that can happen to all alcohol-based markers, including Copics, but tends to happen more commonly in older markers or markers with a very short shelf life just because of the formula used to make the ink. In this case, I'm inclined to believe it's more to do with how long the markers have been sitting in the store, unsold. There was a thin layer of dust across the top of the box, and this was the one set of about five options available that got a clearance sticker. And so, if that is the case, I will forgive it. The other part of the nib problem though is that the nibs do seem pretty spongey/foam-like instead of more of a nylon/silicone feel like Copics or Prismacolor markers have. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does point to the nibs potentially wearing out more quickly over time and/or with heavy use. I didn't have any issues while swatching or working on this drawing, but I will be exceedingly careful to try and not push my luck going forward, just because I'm a paranoid little potato after the hot mess that was the one set of Artist Loft markers I bothered to pick up. (Those nibs, for context, were awful and have started to collapse with very little use). Other than that, I don't really have much more to comment on. Both markers blend really well, and the Winsor and Newton markers, in particular, seemed to be very forgiving in terms of not being patchy if you laid them down inconsistently, and they soften out to a smooth blend pretty well, especially if you use more of a flicking technique while layering up the colors. The shadows aren't terribly dark in part because I only had so many colors to pick from and also because I am notoriously skittish about accidentally getting my shadows too dark on my alcohol marker pieces anyway. But I think Mr. Vampire here turned out pretty good despite that. I did have to touch up a few colors in Photoshop because my scanner kinda messed them up, but I think that's more user-error and my scanner being finicky than it is any fault of the markers. Speaking of which, I did the soft green background with a Pan Pastel to tie in with the green in his eyes, and the triangle-border thing saw the triangles filled in with some tri-tone pencils (a couple by Koh-i-noor and a couple by Crayola) that I acquired recently. I thought it would breathe a little more life into things, and I think I was right. I think it also ties the otherwise random colors together a little bit more. I added the border at all because I had kinda already decided on the pose I wanted to try for a vampire character, since the kind of character was where my color options led me, and while I could have just left it without, it felt kind of lacking without something to more formally ground the character, and as I said the colors feel a bit random without something to strengthen their presence. Which is ironic because the structure of the border was almost completely random, and yet my brain looks at it and just kind of glosses over that knowledge . Overall, I like the markers and I'm happy without how my tall, pale, and mysterious character turned out. Though for some reason I get "hypnotism" vibes from the final product; I think maybe it's the pose, the nature of triangles, and the seductive part of vampire lore combined that's giving me that impression? I'm not really sure. This is actually a really strong option and it's a way to actually get a longer string, well, without having to increase the budget.

Of course, a huge part of the cost of a baby grand or any grand piano is actually constructing that thick, sort of rounded body that surrounds the piano. So, if you don't need that additional construction cost, which in this price range really is largely aesthetic, it doesn't really actually serve much of a musical purpose until you get into the higher price ranges. This you could argue is a more efficient, more cost-effective higher value type of a purchase. In my musical opinion, honestly, the only knock against going with this type of thing dollar for dollar is that you do perhaps miss out on that aesthetic satisfaction that a baby grand might be able to give you. But musically speaking, especially if you're able to play with the lid up or in some cases, even with the front panel completely off, you're getting as much sound and in a lot of cases a slightly clearer sound than what you're gonna get out of a 5-foot baby grand for in that $10,000 range.

Drilling into the details of where the K-500 originated from, it belongs to Kawai' K-series professional upright pianos, which again has been out in its current incarnation for about five years. This was an update that saw a number of technical improvements to the instruments. The previous generation was made up of the K2, K3, K5, K6, K8 and now, of course, we've got the Kawai K-200, K-300, and K-400 which was a new addition, K-500, and K-800. And so, what are those changes? The good news is that, no matter what your preferred sleep position, the Zonkd Mattress can work for you, with three different firmness options geared to appeal to anyone, included back, side, and stomach sleepers, along with those who move a lot or who simply sprawl out in any position. The soft mattress can work well for side sleepers without any underlying back or joint problems, and the medium option is great for side and back sleepers. If you sleep on your back, side, or stomach and prefer a firmer option, you can choose the firm mattress.

It’s important to be honest as you respond to the questionnaire in order to get the best choice for you. You’ll be asked about your weight, sleep preferences, and any current problems you have with sleeping. These woes can be taken into account as much as the more logistical questions in order for the company to make its best recommendation for which firmness level will make you happy.

The bed arrives in a box, rolled and compressed. When you open it, you’ll watch it ‘inflate’, springing to life. There is an off-gassing process for all such mattresses, but the gasses are non-toxic, and with the Zonkd mattress, some people noticed very little smell, especially compared to some on the market. This is likely due to the fact that it is not entirely memory foam, as well as the fact that materials are natural and are CertPUR-US Certified, which means they are good for you and the environment.

Note that the Zonkd mattress isn’t for everyone. First, the warranty is only valid for the original owner. But more importantly, there are limitations to what is covered. As mentioned, you have to adhere to the foundation policy to keep the warranty valid. In addition, physical flaws in the mattress causing splitting or cracking and manufacturer defects in the zipper assembly are covered. However, normal increases in softness that doesn’t affect the ability of the mattress to relieve pressure, as well as any damage incurred during moving or other ‘abuse’ is not covered. Typically, there must be a visible indentation in the mattress when no one is lying or pressing on it in order to utilize the warranty.

This layer essentially has a quicker response that keeps the comfort layer from sinking too far and causing discomfort or issues with movement. It’s this layer that is adjusted for the various firmness options, with less latex used to create a softer feel and more for the firmer mattress. This section of the mattress is also aerated, adding airflow to additionally keep your sleep space cool through the night.

The remaining 8 inches of the Zonkd Mattress are high density poly foam, which creates the structure and shape of the bed. This material is tough and highly durable, giving you a long-lasting product that maintains shape and overall quality throughout the lifespan of the mattress.

Personalization

When you fill out the questionnaire prior to ordering, Zonkd will give you a recommendation as to what level of firmness will provide the most comfort for your particular needs. While it’s not completely customized, this does give you options, and honest answers are best, including entering your actual weight. When the firmness level is determined, the mattress you order will have an adjusted amount of latex in the transition layer, prompting a softer or firmer response depending on your responses, especially dependent upon your preferred sleep position and current complaints.

110-Night Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. The Zonkd Mattress is much the same. You fill out the questionnaire, order the firmness level recommended, and within about a week, your mattress arrives at your home. after a short period to expand, it’s ready to sleep, and you have 110 nights to determine if this is the exact mattress for you. You have to try it for 30 days before returning it, but after that, for the next 80 days, you can call the company at any time to have the mattress returned without question or hassle for a full refund. Working with their customer service is easy, though hopefully you’ll love the mattress and not want to return it.

Motion Isolation & Edges

Motion transfer is an essential part of the mattress review, especially for those who sleep with partners. Our sleep can easily be disturbed by another’s movements through the night, and the better the motion isolation is, the less disturbance you experience. While few mattresses are perfect in this aspect, the Zonkd Mattress ranks highly in this area.

Memory foam and latex can both be pricey, especially when you start adding the copper infusion and the customization of the different firmness levels. However, the Zonkd Mattress provides a very good sleep environment with tons of features that recommend it to almost anyone in the market for a reliable, quality mattress without costing a great deal of money. It’s rewarding and satisfying, especially since the warranty and trial period mean that you have a guarantee that the money is well spent or returned.

The Warranty

The Zonkd Mattress includes a 10-year limited warranty that covers defects as well as certain damages, wear, and tear, assuming you follow the recommendations and care instructions. 2017 Best $100 Bass Fishing Rods

Are you looking for a really good, bang for your buck bass fishing rod? I am always on the lookout and have been trying to test out everything I can. Some of these models included in this list are not new for 2017 but have a few tweaks. Others are much newer lines to the market, but not brands. You should also know, I have only included rods that are $100. I haven’t gone above it (but some can be found for a little less on sale).

Additionally, I have not included companies that import and rebrand with flash clearances, buy one get one free sales, and online sales through Amazon as their primary business. These rods are from established, reputable brands that have been around for many years and are available in many places.

Shimano Exage

The Exage line has 30 Ton Carbon, Fuji Alconite guides, and split grip cork. I have several of these rods and they meet every challenge I have thrown at them. From punching to finesse, this is my favorite $100 rod on the market.

ONE3 by 13 Fishing Fate Black Gen 2

The Fate Black has a 30 Ton HTC blank, 3A Portugese cork, Zirconia guide inserts, and is an eye catcher on the rack or in your rod box. The link above is to Tackle Direct. The 13 Fishing site hasn’t updated with the Gen 2 rods quite yet.

Lew’s TP-1 Speed Stick

The TP-1 is a great rod for fishing slop. I love the Winn grips and the backbone. I even featured it on a Gear in 60 Seconds last fall.

The Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2

The Pro Qualifier 2 is constructed with the BPS exclusive RT3 graphite with Powerwall construction. This construction process creates strong, structurally enhanced rod blanks all with reduced wall thickness. The reduction in blank wall material minimizes the overall rod weight while enhancing sensitivity, making long days of casting more productive and enjoyable. It has a split grip, EVA handle and Fuji guides. You can find these at every BPS and order online.

Daiwa Tatula XT

The Tatula XT incorporates High Volume Fiber (HVF) a higher modulus carbon graphite construction of more volume of fibers and less resin which gives the Tatula XT series its lightweight, strength and sensitivity. It utilizes Fuji guides, a Fuji reel seat and has an EVA foam, split grip handle. These rods are a lot lighter than some of the competitors on this list so if weight is a concern, check this one out.

St. Croix Bass X

The Bass X rods are fabricated from quality SCII graphite blanks and finished with premium components. This is a very similar rod to the St. Croix Mojo Bass line, all the way down to the EVA foam butt, without the $149+ price point. If you’ve always heard great things about St. Croix but the price has been the concern, consider this an open invitation to try one.

Falcon BuCoo SR

Falcon has been one of my “friends and family” secrets for a while. You catch them on sale now and again and you buy them up. This new BuCoo SR has a lot of technical aspects that really make it shine and I can’t do it justice so here is the info straight from Falcon:
