A Beginner’s Guide to Multiclassing

Looking to shake things up? Want to make a statement as your character starts a new arc? Feeling constrained by limited options in combat? 

Why not try multiclassing? Its the fun way for an old character to play like new!

All of the 5e classes are designed in such a way as to encourage you to stick with them for as long as possible, with a shiny capstone ability which acts as a “carrot on a stick” to keep you from being tempted off the path. This is in responce to “dead levels” from previous editions, where more often than not most classes had little benefit from leveling up each time. 

When you’ve played as many games as I have however, you know that most abilities past level 10 are never touched upon, so why not have some fun with your character’s build while you can? 

Note that this is advice, not a howto, which can be accessed here . Likewise these are not “builds”. My intention here is to provide new players with insight into fun combinations, rather than trying to create “OP” movesets or gamebreaking interactions.  I’d also advise against multiclassing for new players, as managing the toolsets of two different classes can be a handful for even the best of us. 

Fighter x Rogue: Last action hero 

Both get their signature abilities in the first few levels so you can easily create a marvelous and highly customized character by level 6 

A fighter provides enough stability for a rogue to hold their own in combat, while a rogue’s extra skills and cunning action give the fighter more flexibility of character and options in combat. 

This is one of the simplest multiclasses to do, as neither class has any spellcasting to juggle. 

Barbarian X Rogue: John Wick

Slightly complicated but worth it: Attacking recklessly (using strength) with a finesse/ranged weapon grants you both advantage and sneak attack, giving you a reliable damage boost each turn. (daggers are great for this, but the whip is also fun) 

The rogue’s cunning action (dash disengage and dodge) GREATLY adds to the barbarian’s combat options, allowing you to disengage OUT OF a reckless melee with several opponents. Thanks to the barbarian’s enhanced movement, you are now far beyond the reach of most melee fighters. 

With uncanny dodge, danger sense, evasion, and all the benefits from rage, you’ll be shrugging off most incoming effects allowing you to stay in the fight longer. 

If you have high constitution and dexterity, unarmored defense can exceed most non-magical armors. 

Paladin X Warlock:  Lord Sauron 

While it might seem contradictory to meld the zeal of a paladin with the warlock’s underhandedness, the combination of the two results in one of my favorite class combinations 5e has to offer. 

Both classes use their charisma for casting, reducing the requirements 

IF you reach level 6 in paladin, a high charisma score adds to ALL YOUR SAVES, and those of your allies. 

The Paladin’s high HP and Armor proficiency gives a lot of defensive power that combat warlocks often have to divert a lot of energy into. Taking levels in warlock lets you retrain these abilities, meaning you’ll now have an added boost in those foundational warlock abilities. 

Paladin spells can be swapped out each day for added utility, and can be cast using high level warlock spell slots. Since warlock slots reset on a short rest, this means a continuous source of healing/buffing throughout the adventuring day.  

The good shit: warlock spell slots can be burnt for the Smite ability, greatly reducing the cooldown and empowering the Paladin’s signature move. 

Druid X barbarian: Arn’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just want to go apeshit? 

In addition to improving your defenses as a barbarian, you get the ability to rage while wildshaped, effectively doubling your animal form’s HP, adding extra damage on every attack, and attacking recklessly with your multiattacks. 

While not able to cast spells or concentrate on spells while raging, the druid has access to a wide number of duration based spells that do not require concentration. Pop these in the rounds before combat, then rage as you enter the fray. 

You are a literal bezerker, a bearbarian, if you would

Cleric X fighter: Battle Mercy

This multiclass is most useful if your cleric is often thrust into the role of secondary melee combatant, or if you are playing in one of those blessed groups where your cleric is not burned with 100% of the group’s healing duties. 

 Many cleric spells revolve around enhancing a character’s fighting abilities, why not cut out the middle step and enhance yourself? 

Nothing feels better than attacking twice as a 5th level fighter and then using your otherwise useless bonus action to cast healing word on yourself or an ally. 

At 8th level all clerics get access to a divine strike ability which boosts the damage of every one of your attacks. Between the fighter’s multi attack and action surge you’re going to be making a lot of attacks. 

Any spellcaster x Sorcerer: Arcane Cocktail

If your caster has a sizable charisma bonus, you might want to consider taking a few levels of sorcerer. Doing so increases the number of spells per day that you can cast, as well as giving you access to metamagic, an ability which is universally useful for any heavy spellcaster.  

Sorcerer x Cleric: mixing the cleric’s stable of healing spells with the sorcerer’s arsenal of high effect combat magic creates a highly versatile caster.  Lots of sorcerer subclasses are also melee combatants, which goes well with the cleric’s heavy armor proficiency 

Sorcerer X warlock: Your pact magic slots can be burnt to create lots of sorcery points, which can be turned into sorcerer spell slots. Given some time to rest up each day, you’ll be swimming in freaky magic. 

Sorcerer X paladin has many of the same benefits as Warlock x paladin, though with an added helping of the sorcerer’s melee boosting abilities and combat magic. 

Wizard x Cleric: Archivist 

Cleric grants medium armor + shield proficiency to keep your squishy wizard body safe, with many domains providing heavy armor. 

Ritual casting for days and a massive list of prepared spells,

Cheat off the gods by having them grant you spells with your cleric spellcasting feature, then scribing them into your wizard spellbook. Seriously, you can do this so long as the spell is both on the cleric and wizard spell lists, it’s a fantastic use of downtime and can get you some really powerful spells.

Qorgeth

The last demon lord in the Tome of Beasts (but not the last arch-fiend), Qorgeth has a difficult to pronounce name and the title of Demon Lord of the Devouring Worm. It is, in its entirety, a gigantic worm that eats everything. Less of an organized or abstract dread, it’s just a gigantic physical threat that prizes those among its followers who bring incredible destruction down on everything.

The second strongest of the Tome of Beasts demon lords after Mechuiti, Qorgeth slots in at an imposing challenge level of 23, fit for a final boss for high level adventures. It’s mechanics are a super buffed up version of the purple worm, adding on legendary and lair actions, as well as innate spellcasting and an additional attack with the length of its body between the face and the stinger. Its crush attack is simply a matter of slamming down onto creatures, crushing them into the ground and pinning them there until they crawl out or it moves away. Its poison is actually weaker in terms of damage than a purple worm, but can also impose the poisoned condition, and a particularly bad saving throw leaves the target fully paralyzed and helpless.

For magic, Qorgeth has a small list to work with. They generally function to give the demon lord something to do against creatures outside of its reach, like dispelling flight or powerfully defensive spells, or restraining those who try to flee with black tentacles, though earthquake is a fun one to devastate the entire battlefield, especially if the fight is occurring in underground tunnels. Once the battle starts properly though they have much less use, and without an ability to use them through legendary actions Qorgeth’s turns are much better spent using Multiattack.

In general, Qorgeth is not really a demon lord for deep, long running or complex plots. It’s a bruiser whose most complicated plans revolve around having an order in which it devours things. In more complicated storylines, it’s best used as support to a more cunning demon lord, either directed to attack or called in to defend.

A dwarf cartographer has spent the past decade of his life exploring worm tunnels. While others think him mad, he insists that the paths left behind by purple worms have a meaning to them, and that mapping them all out will provide the answer. His complex diagrams have amounted to nothing so far, and several expeditions have met their end at the hands of umber hulks, mind flayers, or a backtracking purple worm, though each time the cartographer has survived so far. He may be on to something however, as the three dimensional model he’s crafting to try and make sense of the mess is starting to vaguely look like a sculpture of an obscure demon lord.

When the Worm that Walks, Kyuss, makes ready his plans to truly ascend to godhood, he seeks allies among any force that will help him. The Writhing Prince is one such avenue, as the demigod’s followers entice the demon lord into funneling power into the Kyuss worms, causing many to grow to impossibly large size and become city leveling threats. In the final battle to prevent Kyuss’ ascension, will the demon lord itself make an appearance to ensure that the Age of Worms comes to be?

If one needs a place to hide in the Abyss, the massive tunnels burrowed through the layers provide a slightly safer place. Few demons dare enter them, as the Devouring Worm makes no distinction in its rampage. So long as intruders avoid attracting Qorgeth’s attention, they can travel quite far between Abyssal layers on these paths, but if they happen across the demon lord their lives will almost definitely be forfeit.

WoW Burning Crusade Classic Pre-Patch: Best Classes for the New Expansion Meta

The next chapter of World of Warcraft Classic properly begins on June 1st when players are finally able to enter the Dark Portal and reexperience the first WoW expansion ever. Before then, though, players will have the chance to explore some of TBC‘s most notable upgrades, changes, and improvements as part of a special upcoming pre-patch that serves as a soft launch for the next expansion.

Whenever you start playing TBC Classic, you’ll probably want to be up to speed on which classes are best in the new expansion’s upcoming PvE meta. Even if you don’t care about joining a raid group in TBC, you may just find yourself wondering exactly how viable your preferred class will be at the start of the expansion and for every phase that follows.

While it’s still possible that Blizzard could make changes to TBC that subtly change the game’s PvE meta as we work our way through the expansion’s release phases, these are the best overall DPS, Healer, and Tank classes for TBC Classic‘s PvE mode based on what we currently know.

World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic – Best PvE DPS Classes

S-Tier: Warlock

Unless Blizzard makes some major changes to TBC, you can expect Warlocks to be the most dominant DPS class in the game for quite some time.

While Destruction Warlocks are probably your best bet if you’re looking for the simplest form of incredible damage output, all Warlock specs will be viable when TBC launches. If you don’t like it, blame the power level of Warlocks’ new Seed of Corruption spell as well as a few ways that TBC changes WoW Classic‘s core combat systems that just put Warlocks way above nearly every other option.

A-Tier: Hunter, Mage, Elemental Shaman

It’s pretty easy to put Hunters next to Warlocks when you’re talking about TBC‘s best PvE damage dealers, but just to highlight how insane Warlocks will be, I feel compelled to put them just a notch lower.

Still, most Hunters can expect to regularly top the damage charts throughout TBC. While Beast Mastery Hunters may do more raw damage, you may rightfully be tempted to go for more of a survival build due to their raid friendly abilities. Honestly, it’s hard to go wrong.

Mages are probably the next best DPS class, which really shouldn’t be a surprise given that their AOE and single-target damage output is even better in TBC than it was in Classic (where they were already insanely good). They should be strong in every TBC phase.

Elemental Shamans, meanwhile, are going to start strong due to their powerful utility tools and massive single-target damage potential, but they will become slightly less viable as other classes gain access to better gear. Still, most raid groups will be looking for an Elemental Shaman, which is good news for Elemental Shamans who struggled to find a forever home in Classic.

B-Tier: Enhancement Shaman, Shadow Priest, Rogue, Retribution Paladin

Enhancement Shamans and Shadow Priests are in roughly similar spots in TBC. Both are prized for their versatile toolsets that enhance the damage output of other DPS player in a raid, and both are capable of standing their ground when they’re expected to actually deal damage themselves.

Enhancement Shamans are probably the more well-rounded class overall, but the ways that Shadow Priests’ abilities make Warlocks even better than they already are mean that every raid is going to want one (and possibly more). They’re not the stars of their shows, but they’re a vital part of TBC‘s PvE experience.

Rogues are a little more complicated. They’re great melee damage dealers with some incredible abilities that raid leaders will value, but because they’re more gear dependent than other classes, they’re not going to showcase their full potential until later in TBC.

It’s a similar story for Retribution Paladins. They’re potentially powerful and bring irreplaceable abilities to any raid or party, but it’s going to be a while before they get the gear they need to really reach that next level. They’re outclassed by DPS Shamans until then in a lot of ways.

C-Tier: Druid and Warrior

While Druid players have been waiting for TBC and the chance to shine more than they did in Classic, the sad fact of the matter is that Druids are just not in the upper echelon just yet.

Balance druids are much more powerful than they were before, but they still burn through their mana pools as fast as any other class (often faster). Feral Druids theoretically got buffed, but only the best Feral Druid players will be able to outperform other melee classes (especially once those other classes start to get better gear). As we’ll talk about in a bit, though, there are certainly other reasons to roll a Feral Druid in TBC.

Finally, we have Warriors. The sad fact of the matter is that Arms and Fury Warriors will not be nearly as powerful at the start of TBC as they were at the end of Classic. Arms Warriors may sooner score a raid invite due to the power of their Blood Frenzy ability, but Fury Warriors are going to have a tough time adjusting to the new world order. They’re still capable of dealing incredible damage, but their gear dependency and lack of notable raid tools makes them a tough sell over so many other options.

S-Tier: Restoration Shaman

Due respect to every other healer, but Restoration Shamans are really on a different level.

Restoration Shamans become the sole source for Bloodlust/Heroism in TBC, which is more than enough to ensure they’ll be invited to every raid group for the foreseeable future. Their improved Chain Heal ability is also one of the best ways to consistently heal a raid group through some of the toughest TBC challenges.

Granted, they’re not great single-target healers, but Restoration Shamans are so powerful in every other way that it’s hardly worth talking about their shortcomings.

A-Tier: Holy Paladin and Holy Priest

Interestingly, both of these classes find themselves in roughly the same spot they were in Classic with the biggest “nerf” being that both Alliance and Horde players now have access to Restoration Shamans.

Regardless, Holy Priests are still some of the best single-target healers around. They will be coveted by raid groups for that reason alone, while their Circle of Healing and Prayer of Mending abilities finally give them the viable AoE healing options they lacked in Classic.

Holy Paladins, meanwhile, are still all about the buffs. They’re solid all-around healers, but its their buff abilities that will get them invited to most raids. Whether or not you’ll find Paladin players still interested in raiding as a healer is the bigger question.

B-Tier: Restoration Druid

Restoration Druids are in a weird spot in the early days of the TBC meta. On paper, they’re a solid overall healing class with a few new skills (most notably Tree of Life) that should make them one of the best overall healing options. There are certainly times when they are among the best of the best.

The problem is that Restoration Druids just aren’t as consistent as other healers. Very good Restoration Druids will do well in TBC, but the average Restoration Druid will likely come across as just that.

C-Tier: Discipline Priest

While Discipline Priests are going to be prized in TBC‘s competitive meta, the fact of the matter is that they just don’t bring enough to the table in PvE.

You’ll likely see some Discipline Priests in high-end raids due to some of their better buffs and utility tools, but their lack of a great AoE healing option and a few other missing key abilities makes them little more than a circumstantial option.

S-Tier: Protection Warrior

You’ll have a hard time finding someone who will argue that Protection Warriors aren’t the best overall tanking option in TBC..

While there are certainly other viable tanks in TBC, Protection Warriors offer a blend of consistency and high-end defensive abilities make them the one tanking class that you’ll always want in your raid. They even boast slightly better AOE threat options in TBC than they ever had access to in Classic, so this really is a case of the rich getting richer.

A-Tier: Feral Druid

Feral Druids win the award for the “most entertaining” tanks in TBC. Their abilities and unique stat benefits make them surprisingly effective damage dealers, and their utility skills make them a more than appealing off-tank option for any raid group.

The biggest problem with Feral Druids is that they’re not Protection Warriors. They’re not as resilient, they’re not as consistent, and it won’t be long before most Protection Warriors are better geared across the board than most Feral Druids. Still, this is a fun way to play the game.

B-Tier: Protection Paladin

Protection Paladins are probably on about the same level as Feral Druids, but in the interest of separating your choices as often as possible, they’re ranked slightly lower due largely to the fact that they depend on gear that is almost certainly going to a Protection Warrior instead of them.

Still, Paladins have massive health pools (potentially), some great buffs, incredible AoE threat generation abilities, and are reliable enough to serve as a main tank for any raid that wants to mix things up a bit by relying on a more dynamic tanking option.

How to Apply Liquid Foundation

Liquid foundation is one of the ficklest products to apply. Ever. Not only is its basic application a chore, but even after you feel like you have a routine down, the smallest hiccup — anything from product buildup on your brush to a stray brush stroke — can throw off your entire look for the rest of the day.

But after years (literally, it has been that long) of trying different methods, brushes, and foundations, I think I finally have it down to a handful of simple steps that can make all the difference in the world.

1. Grab your favorite liquid foundation

Grab your favorite liquid foundation. Now, I almost always choose a full coverage one, as this method will sheer it down a bit, making it suitable for most skin types and needs. Pour or pump an amount about the size of a nickel or quarter (this will vary depending on the condition of your skin) onto the back of your hand or a palette.

2. Take a dense, flat-top brush

Take a dense, flat top brush (my favorite is the Sigma F80), and dip it into the foundation. Dot this onto your nose, the cheeks, around the borders of your face, and your chin (one dip should pick up enough product to lightly dot around all of these areas).

3. Starting at the nose…

Starting at the nose, stipple in small, tight areas, moving to the cheeks and the borders of the face, stippling product inward towards the center. Repeat this process for your chin.

4. With what is left on the brush…

With what is left on the brush, stipple over the area above your lips and below your mouth. Avoid the area where you get smile lines for now (this will look weird, but we’ll correct this malfeasance later.

5. If you regularly use foundation under your eyes…

This next step is only if you regularly use foundation under your eyes, rather than or in conjunction with concealer. If you don’t, skip to the next step. Take a bit of foundation on the outer edge of your brush, and dot lightly under the eyes, concentrating the product at the lower inner corners where your under-eyes are darkest. Stipple lightly over this area, taking the foundation applied under the eyes up and onto the eyelid and brow bone.

6. Stipple across your forehead and into the hairline

You should have about 1/3 of the product left. Take some on your brush, and stipple it across your forehead and into the hairline (almost as bad as the jawline is a blatant change in color at your hairline, which many people tend to neglect). Your entire face should now be covered (except for the small area around your smile lines).

7. Dot under your jaw line

Take the remainder of the product on your brush, and dot it under your jawline. Stipple this upwards to connect with the product on your face, and downwards slightly to fade it into your neck. Stipple lightly where your ears connect to your face.

8. Stipple all over your face

Stipple all over your face, using any excess product to deal with problem areas. This distributes the foundation evenly. You may now go over your smile line area, which will only be covered with a small amount of product, greatly reducing the chance of creasing.

9. Buff in a circular motion

After you have stippled all over your entire face once, lightly buff in small circular motions using the same brush. This blurs imperfections and removes any excess product, and melds the product with your skin, giving it a natural skin-like texture. Make sure to buff under your eyes, over your eyelids, and around your hairline to blend the product into the tight borders surrounding these areas. Keep buffing until the foundation starts to feel a bit tacky (it usually takes 2-3 passes over my entire face and under my jaw to get to this point).

10. Apply any cream face products now

Apply any cream face products (blush, highlighter, contour, etc.)

11. Let your foundation set

This step is crucial. Let the foundation set for 3-5 minutes. Take a tissue, and blot all over your face, avoiding the nose if you have large pores. Pay special attention to the eyelids, lines under the eyes, and the corners of the eyes (where excess product will definitely have creased and collected). If your foundation tends to set into your smile lines, you may wish to buff very lightly over this area once more using the same brush as before.

12. Apply loose powder with a puff

Apply loose powder with a puff, rolling and pushing it into the skin.

13. Finish with any other powders and blend

Apply any other powder products (blush, bronzer, contour, etc.), and blend well.

This may seem a tad complicated, but ignoring the setting times, this whole thing takes 5-7 minutes at most, and results in smooth, even, porcelain skin.

If you wish to sheer down this application even further, dampen your brush slightly before application to prevent excess product from being absorbed by the bristles. Make sure to always use a (relatively) clean brush for application (I tend to wash mine every 3-4 days) to avoid caking. And never forget to set and blot!

With this quick tutorial under your belt, you’ll always be able to put your best face forward.

A few thoughts on the effectiveness and danger of building encounters to challenge your players:

Before starting D&Dragonhats Path of Steel, I gave the players information about the setting, what races were or weren’t available and why, the economics, etc. but I explicitly avoided telling them anything about what they would be up against. It could have been an Orcish army from the neighbouring territory, it could have been dwarven automatons bursting from beneath the ground, it could even have just been wild animals in the environment. They had no indication.

I homebrewed the primary enemies they’re facing in this campaign, so that no-one could thumb through the Monster Manual and discover what it was, the lore, the strengths and weaknesses, etc. The story of this campaign was predicated on the players not understanding what they were dealing with, and a homebrew creature was the perfect tool to that end.

However, this resulted in complications. Most of the players rather wisely incorporated some degree of melee into their characters, but most of them also incorporated magic of one kind or another.

The homebrewed monster (which came to be known by the players as a “stone lion” due to its appearance) was a Construct with the Magic Immunity ability.

This was little concern for the charging Paladin and minor trouble at best for the club-wielding Barbarian, but the even the most carefully-designed sniper Rogue or sword-wielding Sorcerer was left definitively neutered by it, with many of their abilities utterly useless against the creature. They felt understandably poor about this, so over time I did my best to give them some advice on how to make the best of things and how to adapt with levelling up to deal with the threat.

As an exercise in presenting the players with an unknown threat in an age when almost any monster can be Googled, the stone lion was a fantastic success. Encounter after encounter was an experiment in the field, with them piecing together bit by bit its different characteristics, behaviours, and abilities. But in keeping it utterly secret during character creation, half the party had unwittingly built themselves into obsolescence because their classes relied so heavily on things the stone lion was impervious to. Whilst this wasn’t definably anyone’s fault per se, it’s something to keep in mind when you’re trying to do something similar.

Fast forward in the campaign and the players have levelled up and gotten the hang of taking on the stone lions. They’re still none the wiser on what they are or where they’re coming from, but they know how to deal with them. One player in particular, by far the most rules savvy of the bunch, has worked out that a full charge on his mount with his lance is enough damage for the Paladin to tackle one almost single-handed.

This soon became a problem, because it critically eliminated most of the threat posed by the stone lions, as well as most of the later enemies of the campaign. Just give the Paladin enough of a run-up and almost everything would fall over in a couple rounds, so I naturally had to shake things up a little before it got out of hand.

A bit of analysis revealed that the party’s greatest weakness (though for most, not by very much) was Will saving throws. The Paladin’s AC was absurdly high, the Barbarian could shrug off most anything that tested Fortitude, etc. but on average the team wasn’t nearly so heavily-armoured against Will effects. The stone lions had nothing that really touched them, save a localised confusion effect that was typically ineffective at best. Time to bring in a specialist.

The players arrived at a desolated settlement being picked over by the stone lions, amongst which were a number of creatures that they seemed to uncharacteristically be leaving alone. These strange psionic creatures were unimpressive by themselves, but were able to paralyse half the party with a thought. The Paladin did not survive.

It certainly wasn’t a massacre, which is a crucial element in circumstances like this where you need to extinguish a character or two for the good of the campaign. The party had plenty of time to plan ahead and plenty of opportunity to react to it, and in the end it was done in with a single action from the Rogue’s Mask of Death (though could have been dealt with easily by the unparalysed and raging Barbarian, who initially decided to selfishly retreat and still hears about it from the late Sorcerer’s player). A little bit more luck on his rolls and the Paladin almost assuredly would have run it over and nothing would have come of it all.

Job done, the threat of the stone lions is reinstated and, what’s more, the players now understand that, whilst not necessarily bigger, there were certainly different threats up ahead.

This does not mean that this approach was flawless, however. In order to actually have the slightest chance of picking off the Paladin, I had to prevent the rest of the party from just flanking and wailing on the creature, which began by just having a couple of stone lions defend it, but ultimately relied on paralysis.

If your players have something to fight in the way, they have options, they have agency, and they feel much better about the situation. If they are paralysed on the other hand, each round they at best have one die to roll to see if they get a turn at all, and they feel snubbed and helpless. Whilst that is part of the idea, it’s not wise to use that too liberally, because you want everyone to have a good time. Those paralysed were kept involved and engaged via familiars they could control telepathically and also by roleplay in asking what their characters were thinking and feeling and such each round.

Similarly, specifically targeting a member of the party for execution is a last resort, it should never be done frivolously or commonly. The stone lions were brewed long before character creation, so the difficulty for the party to deal with them was intended but not in any way specific, but the new creatures were precision targeted at the party’s weakest point and set loose specifically to take one of them out (The issue was blurred slightly by the loss of the Sorcerer, but popular opinion is that was more to do with the Barbarian’s actions than the creature itself).

Ultimately whilst I engineered the new creature to all but ensure the Paladin’s demise, I didn’t make it unstoppable. A lucky saving throw, a few good damage rolls, and it would have just been an odd encounter to contemplate on the road. If you have to get rid of a character, don’t make it easy for anyone involved (you included).

During character generation, I was very clear with the players that they would be facing something unknown, and that characters would have shorter lifespans than our usual campaigns. Had I mentioned strong resistance to magic, almost no-one would likely have built spellcasters of any kind, save perhaps self-buffing ones (as the Sorcerer retooled towards being) or support roles. Had I suggested resistance to critical hits and the like, there would likely have been significantly less impulse to be a Rogue. When the players discovered that their characters were grossly unfit to take on the stone lions, I gave them one-to-one advice on how they could improve down the line and laid out their options for the time being. Ultimately I think I did the best I could to mitigate the amount of agency lost in fighting the unknown monster.

The Paladin’s absurd degree of success against the stone lions was in part also a consequence of being vague about the monsters. By logical design, everything in D&D has a limited volume of health and the capacity to be damaged, so he focused himself into an efficient supplier of large amounts of damage. This provided the party with a good and reliable means of tackling any threat I’d cooked up, but it meant literally any threat was affected.

By giving the players an unrecognisable entity to face, I gave them a challenge to overcome and a puzzle to unravel, but I also inherently opened the door taking away the players’ agency in the campaign and spoiling it for them, as well as for players to nullify everything by extreme hyper-focus on one of the most universal elements of gameplay.

There’s a definite advantage to securing a palpable sense of the unknown in your campaign, but be careful how you do it and be prepared to handle any unintentional consequences of it.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Another Hero King (Shadows of Valentia) Impressions

***No Story or Character Spoilers***

I dont speak or read a word of Japanese so I couldnt give my thoughts on the characters or story even if I wanted to.  In addition to missing out on the story and character development I also only scratched the surface of the skill(tech) system as well as the sidequest system.  All of that is enough to make me not want to call this a review; I need to play it in English and do the postgame content to have a complete opinion on the game, but as it stands I still have a lot of thoughts about the game after one complete playthrough. So...here are those thoughts:

Presentation:  I dont think I can praise the presentation highly enough.  Its always been the case with Fire Emblems on the same console that they look slightly better than the one before it, and thats no exception here.  The music, color palate, animations, menus, character and weapon designs are all among the best in the entire franchise.  Even though I couldnt understand the words, it was incredible to play a Fire Emblem game with full voice acting.  It really elevates the experience and I’m very pleased we have finally gotten to that point.  No idea if the localization will have good voice acting to make it work, but what we have heard so far has been great and generally speaking I think the 3DS games have done a good job in the area of localizations so I am not too concerned.  If I have one gripe about the presentation its in the fully animated CG cutscenes.  They still look very nice but the animation is a step down from what we saw in Awakening and Fates.

Gameplay other than combat: Fire Emblem Echoes, like Gaiden, is as different from any other Fire Emblem game as it could possibly be while still having that Fire Emblem feel.  There are a lot of things that work together to make the game feel so unique.  In addition to the world map that was in the original Gaiden and brought back in Sacred Stones and Awakening we also have towns and dungeons.  Now, towns and dungeons were a thing in Gaiden but they were the definition of minimal.  Towns consisted of one or two buildings where you talked to everyone and they either joined the party or warned you of a tough enemy coming up, and once in a while there was a chest as well.  Now towns are 4 or 5 screens with many more npcs to talk to and more items to find, as well as a blacksmith (who in Echoes is a cool buff lady instead of the normal gruff guy in most FE games!) in most of the towns.  It must be said that in the original game you could walk freely around the towns and now they are split up into screens and function more like a visual novel.  Some people are upset by this change, but I personally dont really care either way.  Being able to walk around would be slightly more immersive and the visual novel style is slightly more efficient and makes it easier to not miss any items, and I think both those things are valuable. 

Dungeons, on the other hand, are just a straight upgrade.  In Gaiden you walked down a hall and did a fight, sometimes thats repeated x2 or 3 times.  It got a little more complicated near the end in Celicas route and then again at the end of the game, but not much more complicated.  Now they are actually dungeons with secret passages and breakable objects and treasure and enemies that you can ambush or can ambush you.  All the dungeons have a really great atmosphere and feel unique from one another.  I admittedly dont play a lot of dungeon crawler type games, so I dont have a huge frame of reference here, but to me it felt like it was on the simpler side of dungeon crawlers, but not too simple that it wasnt enjoyable.  Aside from the lost woods which is a maze with a lot of signs that I couldnt read, I liked all of the dungeons in the game, and I expect that I wont have any problems with the lost woods once I can understand them better.  The fights themselves are simple and much easier than what you face in the main battles, so its overall just a fun atmospheric break from the main game where you win some easy fights, collect items, and maybe grab a promotion if anyone is ready. 

Oh, I almost forgot, fatigue is a mechanic in dungeons.  But just barely.  At no point was fatigue ever more than the most extremely minor inconvenience.  I really cant understand why they put it in the game.  It usually only even sets in if you stick around in a dungeon longer than normal to grind, so I assume its meant to penalize grinding, but that doesnt make a ton of sense because 1) dungeons are there for you to grind and 2) its not even a big punishment because its so easy to get around via just leaving the dungeon or using one of the ample foodstuffs to cure it.  So basically, its a bad mechanic that was poorly thought out and executed, but it barely matters so its easy to ignore and forget about.

I dont know what it is about finding weapons in a dungeon or picking it up from a castle you gained access to after a hard battle on the map, but it really makes them feel incredibly precious to me.  That feeling is made even stronger by multiple design elements: first, like Gaiden and Fates before it, weapons are unbreakable, so you can keep using them as long as you want and get more attached. Second, as your characters use the weapons they unlock techniques that they can use if they have those weapons equipped.  Last, forging has been added to the game and it uses a tiered system where you keep upgrading until you reach max level and then can upgrade it to an even better weapon entirely, letting you stay with your weapons throughout the game.  And unlike Fates which added a bunch of drawbacks to the S rank weapons to offset their power and infinite durability, the legendary weapons in Echoes are just great. I think its an amazing system.  I didnt fully understand the rings or shields, though I did use them as well, I got more out of having weapons equipped in general, but rings all have big descriptions as to their effects so I will have more to say when the game releases in English. 

I also didnt get a ton out of the skill system.  Since most skills dont double, I dont think youll be using them much on your mercenaries, pegs, or fast cavaliers, meaning typically worse off units like knights and archers might benefit from it.  I mainly used two skills in my playthrough: A very strong double attack from Alm’s personal weapon and a super accurate attack with Atlas using an iron bow which in conjunction with his massive attack stat meant big chip damage.  Ill have more to say about this later, but I am tentatively pretty excited about this system.

Battles in Echoes: The actual combat in Echoes is significantly different than any other FE game.  Three major things really work together to make that true: Theres no Weapon Triangle, Growths are pretty low across the board, and when you promote you are brought up to the class baseline in stats.  These things in conjunction with each other make it so that classes have a far stronger identity than ever before.  Every class is well suited to fighting certain other classes, and you really dont want to send one of your units up against an enemy type that is good against them.  This means that juggernauting is mostly out of the game as you really need to fight with your whole army to be able to deal with all enemy types.  And thats right, I said the whole army.  There are no deployment limits other than in dungeon battles.  This is a pretty big deal and really makes the gameplay different than other Fire Emblems.  The only other main game with no deployment limits is Genealogy of the Holy War, however in that game I almost always found myself either not fielding a few of the units or fielding them and then they never made it to the fighting because of low movement.  In Echoes, I always wanted to use everyone and they almost all were useful in some small way.  This hugely changes the feel of the game for me.  I know a lot of people were concerned about there being no pair-up and how that would diminish the feeling of bonds between units, but this game gave me a stronger feeling of togetherness between my army than any other FE game prior has done and it wasnt even in a language I understood! It was just the game mechanics working to tell that story.  I always had to keep my army in a tight bunch, both to try and keep them all within their three tile support range and to be close by to attack the enemies who attacked their friends. It feels really great to fight with my whole team, even my armor knights, for the first time. 

Compared to Gaiden: I am already a big fan of Gaiden so inevitably I couldnt help but to compare it with the original while I played.  Some of these things might not even be noticeable for anyone who didnt play Gaiden but they mattered to me and I want to point them out in any case.  First the biggest thing to Gaiden fans: all the buffing and nerfing.  Generally, I didnt really notice a lot of the buffs.  Clair and Mae were both a lot better units than previously but otherwise I couldnt tell you off the top of my head who else was improved and how.  Nerfs were a lot more noticeable: Falcoknights and Dread Fighters, while still amazing, are much less impressive than they used to be.  I suppose it makes sense but I cant help but feel disappointed.  Gaiden/Echoes pushes rpg elements and is generally a game that seems to encourage grinding, letting the player have overpowered things at endgame seems like it compliments those design decisions.  Similarly, they nerfed mummies in a major way.  Before they appeared in big groups near the end of both routes for the player to easily grind up the entire party in a very short amount of time if they wanted to do so.  Now they appear randomly, run away from you, and when/if you do get to kill them they barely give any exp unless you are extremely underleveled.  Its a game where grinding could actually be fun but they dont include any way to level up past level 12 or so without it taking a miserably long time.  On the opposite end of things, I really approve of the nerf to warp.  Before you could warp any unit to anywhere on the map and it really lent itself to letting Alm’s half become an Alm solo.  With it now having a much shorter range, its more encouraging to use your entire army and not just Alm, and I think thats a good thing. 

My One Big Fear:  This goes hand in hand with my big complaint from last section, but I think this game might just have the scummiest dlc practice of any Nintendo game.  The original Gaiden gave players easy access to endgame grinding to level up all their units to max very quickly and easily if they so desired.  Echoes changed it so that those enemies now give an insignificant amount of exp and they are selling a new way to grind easily as DLC.  That really sucks.  Theres nothing else to say than cutting something out of a remake and selling it separately is a really really shitty thing to do.  I hope enough people become aware of what they did and protest.  DLC practices have gotten progressively worse since Awakening but this is the worst of the bunch, and I really hope this trend doesnt keep going into the Switch FE era.  I also am very worried about the money in this game.  I did not have nearly enough money to do all the forging that I wanted to do and I am aware that a gold farming dlc is planned.  This would be just as shitty of a practice as with exp if the money situation is as bad as it immediately seems because giving everyone forged weapons would make the game more fun, and that fun is blocked by a paywall.  That being said, I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now because I didnt do many sidequests, and its possible that theres a lot of money to be earned there or elsewhere and I didnt know it.  If in-game gold is actually as rare as it seems and buying a dlc to getit more easily is heavily encouraged then I will be very disappointed.

In conclusion: Theres some seriously troubling aspects of monetization that actually hamper enjoyment of the game, and fatigue and food seem to largely be a waste of time, but that aside Echoes is a fantastic game and a real treat to Gaiden fans and Fire Emblem fans and video game fans in general.  Its all around an enormously fun experience that I know will get even better once I get to play it in English.

EX3: Simple Exalted Antagonists

I’ve been refining my simplified approach to building Exalted antagonists with lots of charms or other powers, and so far I’m liking the results. The main idea is to cut down on the number of choices and calculations I have to make as a GM, so that I can act faster and spend more thought on interesting descriptions and interactions. It can require a bit more prep-time than just taking charms out of the book, but the time it saves me in game more than makes up for it. 

I’ve laid out a somewhat detailed description of my process below the cut, and I’d love to hear what people think of it, whether you think it might be useful, or whether you have anything to add. The trick to the system is that it isn’t precise and it isn’t totally fair. It involves making a lot of judgement calls when designing the NPCs, simplifying rules in ways that might make the effects better or worse than before, and generally running roughshod over the careful balancing worked into the rules. I wouldn’t allow this for player characters, but NPCs power levels and mechanics are already fairly arbitrary, so I don’t see that as a big problem. 

NPCs I build/simplify with this system tend to come out as slightly-to-moderately more powerful than they’d be otherwise, which is honestly quite useful to me, because it makes it easier to build antagonists that can challenge the PCs in combat. My side has the advantage of higher stats, but theirs benefits from having four heads instead of one, and the chance to familiarize themselves with their characters instead of playing someone different every session, plus the fact that I’m generally a bigger fan of their characters than mine. I think it all evens out. 

Fair warning: This process operates under the assumption that simplified rules are sufficient to handle 95% of the situations you’ll be seeing in-game. For those 5% where it isn’t, you’ll probably have to improvise. 

Step 1: Remove Dead Weight

The first step is to cut out “inefficient” charms/powers: those that take up a lot of attention for relatively little mechanical effect. This means taking out:

Dice Tricks (those more complicated than Double 10/9/8/7)

Resource Trickles (gain 1i or 1m with every parry)

Effects that trigger off dice rolls (Roll includes 7+8+9+10)

+1 die bonuses to specific situations

Charms that only apply to unlikely situations

Any charms that aren’t useful in combat.

Next, I look at the effects that I’ve cut and see if any can be simplified by being combined, either with each other or with other powers. Charms that only kick in from certain results/die rolls are easier to handle if they all have the same triggering condition. Resource trickles can be combined into a single large resource flow.

Step 2: Streamline 

Step two is looking at the charms that didn’t get cut, and reducing their size and complexity.  

Ignore powers with special refresh conditions. Either they refresh after a set number of rounds or they don’t refresh at all.

Calculate any dice pools ahead of time, and put the results directly in the power’s text. Even if you’re not otherwise making a Quick Character, do this. 

For any charms with varying costs/effects, such as excellencies, assume that you’ll be paying the maximum cost for the maximum effect every time. “1m per +1 damage to a max of 5 damage” becomes “+5m for +5 damage.”

If a power adds a new dice roll to an action that already requires rolling dice, just skip the power’s roll and use the average result instead. 

Reflexive charms with a cost of 1m become passive effects that are always on, unless you think they’re likely to be used more than five times per round, in which case they cost 5m and last for one round.

Be careful with Perilous charms; making them too easy can accidentally make your NPC nigh-unkillable. (If that’s what you want, well, go for it).  

Step 3: Combos

Step three is clustering charms together. The goal is to create a set of several action combos, which represent a complete turn for the character, and several reaction combos, which represent a complete response to a threat or situation. The point is to package multiple effects together into a form that requires no calculation and minimal decision making. They’re mechanical abstractions rather than actual special powers, there to represent activating several charms at once. 

Combos combine several powers together as if they were a single charm, with a single cost, and body text describing all its combined effects. Action combos usually consist of a single/flurried combat action or a simple charm, plus any other charms supplementing it, and are always represented as a single Simple charm. For dual charms, I write down only the withering or decisive effect depending on what attack the combo uses. Reaction combos consist of one or more reflexive charms packaged together, and are represented as a single reflexive charm. In both cases, combos usually have all the combined keywords of all the charms they contain.

What combos do I need?  

At minimum, I need each character to have at least one action that provides a Withering attack and another that provides a Decisive attack, plus at least one reaction that they can use to boost their defense against powerful attacks. I’ll do two or three of each if I want to make a complex foe who has more options than just “all in.” Simple charms that generate special attacks generally get their own combos as well. I don’t make any combos that are just basic attacks without any charms unless the character in question doesn’t actually have any charms of that type. Social actions can also be made into combos, so long as they’re things you could do in one turn in the middle of a fight. 

I’ve found it’s usually best to give each character only a single “buff” combo in order to keep things simple. If I really want the character to have multiple scenelong buff charms, this might mean combining them both into one action. The point is to make sure that the character only has a one “buffed” state and one “unbuffed” state, so I can do the calculations for both and put them side by side on the sheet. For any buffs that are both reflexive and scene-long, I assume they’re in effect already, and subtract their costs from the character’s starting Essence. 

By the end of this step, the only charms not in combos should be passive permanent effects, and significant effects that trigger in specific circumstances. I like to incorporate excellencies into the costs of my combos, but you can keep them separate if you prefer fine control.

Optional: Condense Essence

The last step isn’t for everyone, but I find it helpful for quick calculation. I divide all essence costs, rewards, and pools by 5, to make their essence easier to track. I usually round in the NPC’s favour, but that’s not obligatory. To remind myself that I’m doing this, I’ll represent the condensed units as M instead of m, so a cost of 10m becomes 2M, for example. This is all just a bookkeeping cheat, of course; any charms that the PCs to affect the NPCs’ essence still treat it as its real value, which just happens to always be a number divisible by 5. 

Final Step: Fudge It

Look over the NPCs sheet, and see if there’s anything missing. If their numbers aren’t quite what you need them to be, just add more dice. If it looks like they’re going to burn through their essence in two rounds and you need them to last three, increase their essence pools. If they need more health levels, don’t fuss around with adjusting their stamina and Ox Body Techniques for the ideal result, just give ‘em more health levels. Don’t worry about finding just the right charms or artifact or merit to fix things, just fix them directly. This doesn’t mean removing all of a character’s weaknesses (invincible foes are boring), but it does mean removing any flaws that would keep them from being the threat they’re supposed to be (trivial enemies are also boring.) 

In other words, if you’re going to cheat, cheat here, and not during play. You want stats that you can rely on to work in a fight, options that don’t require you to adjust dice pools and defenses on the fly or invent new powers on the spot. As a GM, the rules for creating characters are only guidelines to you, but your players should be able to count on fair, consistent rules during the actual fight. Better they have fun overcoming BS enemies through legitimate means than overcoming legitimate enemies through BS means. 

Optional: Non-Combat

These rules were written to make combat easier to run as a GM. If you want to do something similar to this for out of combat, it’s even easier. 

Create action and reaction combos for social actions used outside of combat.

Streamline any charms that the PCs will interact with mechanically, which usually means anything that inflicts a penalty, sets a difficulty, goes against the PCs’ defenses, or calls for an opposed roll.

Charms that won’t affect the players mechanically cease to be mechanics at all. Just write out a list that describes their effects in very abstract terms, like “They can build weapons with incredible speed” or “They can heal from any wounds in just a day” or “They can summons demons and bind them to service.” Spend no essence, roll no dice; effects work as fast and last as long as your story needs them to.

When in doubt, ask yourself “Will this ever show up on the table? Will the PCs ever need to know how well I rolled or what I spent?” If not, no mechanics are necessary.

Granite & Imported Marble Types

Granite and Marble Types Granite when considering granite and marble tiles as a flooring material, most people think of the classic, glass-smooth white stone with Smokey grey veining. But there are actually many options for color, vein pattern, finish, and size of marble floor tiles.

Marble forms as carbonate sedimentary rock, such as limestone, is metamorphosed under pressure to re-crystallize into a harder stone. Depending on the chemical composition of the original sedimentary rock, and the conditions under which it metamorphoses, the marble can take a variety of appearances, though nearly always with distinctive wavy veins running through it.

Marble can be categorized in a number of ways, and knowing the differences will help you make informed decisions.

Mineral Content although it is rarely highlighted by sellers of marble, different types of marble is sometimes categorized according to the amount of magnesium carbonate they contain:

Dolomite marble contains more than 40% magnesium carbonate. Magnesium marble contains between 5% and 40% magnesium. Calcite marble contains less than 5% magnesium carbonate. Geographic Origin the various types of commercial marble sold by retailers are usually named for the region from which they are quarried. Nearly every continent contains deposits of marble, but most of the commercial marble sold for residential building materials come from Italy, Spain, or other areas of southern Europe. The appearance of the marble usually gives clear clues as to its place of origin.

Carrara marble: This classic white or light gray marble is one of the lightest marbles used for flooring tiles. It is typically white or very light gray, with soft gray veins running through it is quarried in the city of Carrara in the northern tip of Tuscany, Italy. With hundreds of operating quarries producing it, Carrara marble is one of the most readily available marbles you can choose. By some accounts, more than 80% of all marble used in residential construction up to now is Carrara marble. Supplies of Carrara marble are dwindling, however, and you can expect other different sources of marble to come into heavier use in the coming years.

Calacatta marble: A whitish marble with very pronounced veins ranging from gray to golden brown. Originating in the Apian Mountains in Carrara, Italy, it is a high-end luxury stone that is used both in countertop slabs and flooring tiles. It is available in both honed and polished finishes. Calacatta is quite similar to Carrara marble, but with more prominent veining. This is a rarer and more expensive form of marble.

Statuary marble: Also called Statuario, this marble is also quarried from the Carrara region of Italy, but it has a lighter field with less color variation that classic Carrara marble. The veins are usually a mixture of light and dark gray. Calacatta is a rarer and more expensive form of Italian marble.

Breccia onicada marble: This is warmer, darker marble, with creamy browns and reds common. It is used both for countertops and floors. Breccia onicada is sometimes considered a form of limestone, and it has a more complicated veining pattern than most marbles. The term "breccia" refers to the rock's composition, in which broken fragments are cemented together in a fine-grained mixture. This angular, broken pattern makes for a very attractive stone surface. The onicada form of brecciated marble is quarried in Italy.

Arabescato orobico marble: This is a very dark marble with light gray to brown sweeping veins. It is a premium, high-end marble that comes from the Brembana Valley in Northern Italy.

Emperador marble: This marble is quarried from three different regions of Spain and is available in various shades of brown, with fine grains and irregular veins. The darker color makes is a good choice for floor areas that receive high traffic; it is also commonly used for fireplace surrounds.

Crema Marfil marble: This textured creamy beige stone has an overall yellow, cinnamon, or golden beige color with very soft veins of darker color. Like breccia onicada, it is sometimes marketed as a form of limestone. It is quarried in Spain.

There are also unique and exotic marbles available from Turkey, Greece, and other regions. These often are quite expensive, but they can have truly unique colors, such as deep reds or greens.

Buying Tip what is sold as "marble" in the big box home improvement centers is sometimes not genuine stone, but rather a "marble-look" porcelain tile. there is nothing wrong with these manmade ceramic products—they are much cheaper than genuine marble and can be remarkably effective at mimicking the look—but if you are set on using real marble for your flooring, read labels carefully. Shopping from a specialty flooring store will ensure that you are getting genuine marble.

Surface Finish Any marble tile can be finished with any one of several different surface finishes. The most popular are polished, honed, tumbled, and brushed.

Polished Marble one of the prized characteristics of a marble floor is its ability to take a very high polish. This allows the material to be buffed until it glistens in the light and is perfectly smooth to the touch. In lighter-colored marbles, polished tiles will actually glow, with the light of the room penetrating slightly into the stone and then reflecting outward with soft illumination.

There are several drawbacks to polished marble floors. First, they are very slippery, especially in wet environments. They also easy to damage—and will readily show that damage. These blemishes will be more visible in darker solid colored marble materials than they are in the light or single-colored tiles.

Honed Marble In a honed surface, the marble is ground down until it is flat and smooth, but not to the point where it is slippery and polished. These tiles allow you to have the beauty of marble with less concern about slipping hazards.

Unfortunately, honed marble often does not have the same vibrancy of color as a highly polished stone. Often, the hues seem a little faded and washed out compared to the similar material in a polished finish. Honed marble also still has a relatively low coefficient of friction, and it can be scratched if not cared for properly.

Tumbled Marble Tumbled marble is created by processing tiles in a drum with rock and sand aggregate that creates small chips, scratches, and rounded edges on the tiles. The resulting tiles have a rustic, natural look that many people find attractive. The texture of tumbled marble is a good feature for shower floors since it reduces the slipperiness of the tiles.

With tumbled marble, each piece you get is slightly different. The tiles themselves are fairly standard in size, but the shapes will vary slightly, and not every piece will be a perfect right-angled square. Still, you should know that Great Swords are slow, clumsy, and dependent on tricky combos that can go wrong quickly. This is a pretty fun weapon to learn, but you should expect some growing pains along the way as you try to master its potential.

The Gunlance Offers a Complicated Blend of Defense, Range, and Melee

You might not expect much in the way of subtlety from a sword that fires explosive rounds, but Gunlances are surprisingly graceful weapons. They require you to master a tricky combination of big hits, defensive stances, and well-timed range attacks. 

While that means that Gunlances can be incredibly difficult to learn, they at least offer the advantage of giving you a few options in any given situation. They’re one of the better “complicated” weapons for beginners if you like what they have to offer.

Even still, you’ve got to know that what you see from the hammer is pretty much what you get from the hammer. 

Heavy Bowguns are Perfect for Ranged Players With a Little Patience

Like many of Monster Hunter Rise’s larger weapons, Heavy Bowguns are built on a charge system. That is to say that effectively utilizing them requires you to charge your shot ahead of time and optimize your moment of attack.

It’s not incredibly difficult to spot your opportunities with this weapon, though, and it’s honestly pretty fun to use. If you’re looking for a ranged weapon to learn that still offers a little kick, this could just be the one for you. 

The Hunting Horn is Weird, Complicated, and Worth the Effort For the Right Player

Hunting Horns have long been one of the strangest weapon types in the Monster Hunter franchise. Effectively a deadly instrument, Hunting Horns use musical notes and songs to battle enemies rather than strict melee damage. 

While previous versions of the Hunting Horn were thought of as support weapons, Rise’s version of this weapon concept makes it a little easier to solo you’re way through the game with them. Insect Glaives Work Best For Players Who Are Really Into Their “Gimmick”

The star of any Insect Glaive build isn’t the glaive itself but rather the insect companion that comes with it. That companion is going to supplement a lot of your quicker attacks by offering additional damage and even occasionally buffing your character. 

Because the Insect Glaive doesn’t offer as much “straight” damage as the Dual Blades (at least not at first), you’ve really got to buy into the idea of utilizing an insect companion and want to learn that gimmick to push through the wall that comes at you when you choose to start with this weapon. 

The Lance Lets You Play Things Safe When You’re Learning the Ropes

Despite its size, the Lance is actually best thought of as a defensive weapon. It allows you to tank up and stay behind a shield as you use this weapon’s size to keep distance between yourself and your enemy. 

The defensive nature of the Lance means that it allows new players to learn the game without taking massive amounts of damage in the process. That said, this is hardly the most exciting weapon in Monster Hunter Rise, and you may eventually choose to replace it with the Gunlance or even the Hammer.

The Light Bowgun is a Simple Range Weapon With a Twist

When you’re thinking of ranged weapons in a game like Monster Hunter Rise, you’re probably thinking of the Light Bowgun. It’s a way to attack from a distance that offers few thrills but proves to be reliable and simple enough to learn.

One thing you should know about the Light Bowgun, though, is that it relies on an ammunition system that requires you to learn about the benefits of various kinds of ammo and how to best combine them. It can be complicated, but it definitely gives this weapon more depth than it would otherwise enjoy.

The Long Sword is An Ideal Starting Melee Weapon That Scales Well

The Switch Axe starts off as a fairly standard axe, but you actually have the option of turning it into a sword if you do enough damage. Each form offers unique benefits but really mastering this weapon will require you to swap between the two forms. 

Sound complicated? It can be, but because the Switch Axe deals decent damage even as a “straight-ahead” melee weapon, it’s surprisingly easy to learn its more advanced mechanics as you go along. Definitely consider this one if more standard melee weapons just don’t appeal to you. 

The Sword and Shield Are Ideal For Beginners and Useful in Multiplayer

Monster Hunter Rise’s Sword and Shield offer about what you’d expect. Seriously, this set-up is really little more than a sword for stabbing and a shield for blocking.
