ult dirk as a prince who destroys the narrative and destroys through the narrative, who is determined to reshape it in his own image and 'fix' it, who will make himself the villain if thats what it takes and do whatever he has to in order to help everyone, even if it means hurting them (heart as putting on and taking off masks when needed, inflexible, cold, building a coherent narrative of their own story). dirk as a character who constantly has to face himself via one of his many alternate selves, who can only gain control by uniting those alternate selves into one coherent whole

john is homestuck and ult dirk is homestuck post canon and one of the first things he does when he gains power is kill john (kill homestuck) through the narrative. destroying the (previously free, directionless, detatched) narrative and destroying that narrative through your own (inflexible, cold) narrative. theyre so yaoi

🔥 every time darius is shown to use his abomination form he is using it in a very deliberate and calculating way, and not because he is supposedly so angry/furious

meanwhile every time he shows real strong emotions, whether positive or negative, he is not in the transformed form (though his abomination powers are clearly important to him with how he uses them for affectionate gestures, etc).

and, imo, both times he is seemingly very outwardly furious - with Raine in ER and the kids in the ASiAS - he is playing the role, possibly playing up the real annoyances (because he is more often shown to be annoyed than angry in actual canon). and compare to how he reacts to other coven heads who are his real enemies: focused fighting with Vitimir, concern over Eber AND over failing to stop the spell in KT, and disdainful and stern expression in the finale. It's concern, hurt, or pettiness, annoyance rather than explosive anger.

EDIT: on the rewatch i think he was momentarily angry in ER (after he got dirt literally on his face), but imo, by the time he had transformed into his abomination form he was playing again.

possibly hot take, but if/when they resurrect bobby, i would love it they didn't have athena's reaction be anger (which imo makes sense and obviously angela bassett would eat that storyline). i'd love if she just got to be happy lmao and maybe consider a career change. what i'd love to see is if BUCK is angry when bobby comes back. because bobby MADE him leave. buck took eddie wondering if he (eddie) could have done anything to save bobby, is because buck didn't. he didn't do everything he could to save bobby! bobby asked him not to! he asked buck to be strong, to take care of his team, and to let bobby have time with his wife. and we've seen how much buck is struggling, so imagine the ANGST if bobby comes back and instead of uncomplicated relief to have him back, buck is struggling to forgive him. for leaving, for telling buck to respect his wishes and let him die, for putting the weight of the team on his shoulders (in buck's mind). the angst!! there hasn't been a buck-bobby conflict since the lawsuit really, but they have such a good dynamic and its SOOO good and compelling to watch it come under pressure. also chim could be brought in as a parallel, given his anger with bobby pre-resurrection but i feel like given maddie and his kids it's harder for him to hold his anger once bobby is back (or give me a full buck chim storyline where they bond in a weirdly toxic way over bobby coming back, that would SLAP). ALSO!!! wouldn't it be convenient if there was another recent complicated father-son conflict that the show never fully resolved?? wouldn't it be interesting if there was someone who could relate to buck feeling betrayed by his father's actions?? or a father who could relate to bobby's catholic upbringing and sense of guilt over his son specifically, even though he never meant to hurt him?? wouldn't that be crazy

I would have dropped the whole virgin girl rule. Not only does it contradict itself in its own canon multiple times, not only is it a weak plot device, with weak disclaimers, but it's based largely on pop culture, and definitely not on Dracula. In Dracula, the horror is that anyone in the story can turn into a godforsaken version of themselves and have to deal with it. The Romanian First Mate commits suicide so he won't have a "worse" fate than death when he realizes that Dracula is the killer (paralleling Jonathan choosing to climb and fall to death rather than become one of the "semi-demons" by the Three). Dracula targets Mina to become a vampire, despite knowing she's been married for months. She's expected to turn Jonathan, since vampires first target their loved ones (see vampire Lucy beaconing Arthur). The poison doesn't operate differently based on sexual purity and gender. In fact, in Balkan folklore anyone who is not a prepubescent child can turn, hence why in rural Serbia and Bulgaria people would check any adult's grave every 3 and 7 years post-death. (7 because if a vampire went around undetected past that, they could leave their homeland and spread.)

On that note, I'd have given the consequences of vampirism to be more dire than "now you have sick superpowers and a liquid diet." There's a reason why that was the main horror instead of death.

YES. That's an excellent point. I've always thought that that was kind of bullshit; imo it was a cheap plot idea to get that scene with Seras and the Cheddar priest before Alucard arrives and does HIS whole virgin shtick. It does have a plot point later, where Integra starts to suspect about artificial vampires because of the ghouls they find being so young in age they shouldn't have become ghouls; it was an interesting plot point, but also the whole "a male vampire can only turn female virgin humans" and vice-versa thing is kinda bullshit because we literally have an intersex character in the show?? What kind of vampire would we need to turn Heinkel into one???

In the additional time we could've given Seras, we could've explored the nature of vampirism more. Maybe it changes you so fundamentally that you feel rotten and turned into a creature so vile you'd be repulsed. Maybe it makes you give into your deepest darkest wants; Seras is someone with a lot (and I mean a LOT) of internalized rage and trauma; what if the extremely violent and sadistic side we saw her get in her moments of bloodlust were what she could become if she wasn't careful? The Cheddar priest was a rapist and a mass murderer, the Bonny and Clyde vampires killed entire families in a power trip— is that what most people would become if they were infected? The idea of such destruction is terrifying; most people hold hidden resentment and power fantasies that they don't act upon because of obvious societal cohabitation and maturity. Imagine if everyone just started to act upon those unrealistic feelings of destruction and anger that all of us have. If I started to attack family members and loved ones because of some hidden anger and blame I feel, or tried to make them into That too. It'd be terrifying and truly something more than just "anthropophagic predator" and "liquid-based diet monster" imo.

some random musings ive been turning over since ive seen the movie (ive only seen it once at this point)

the fact that remmick only knew about the juke joint because he ate the KKK couple is so...interesting and i cant even articulate why. like yea the ppl at the juke joint were always going to be in danger (cause of the KKK who were coming in the morning) but all the vamp stuff happening to them cause of that just...i dunno! ive been thinking about it

grace and annie both being mothers (even tho annie's child had passed). theres a connection there somehow, but my brain is mush.

mary, even tho shes married to some yt guy, is still in danger by being there. i think the movie is explicitly telling us that when the KKK husband makes reference to "light-skinned niggers" and then obvi she gets turned and made into a double agent

i think the way the vampirism works in the movie is interesting cause both stack and mary seem to have genuine grief/anger when annie is killed. theres this...tension (i dont remember fully what annie said about what vampires are outside of souls being trapped in a dead body) cause yes remmick is in there too, sure. but mary and stack are also in there (as evident by the final scene with them). this makes the bo bits interesting. tho i think (or like to) part of it is remmicks desire to connect to his own ancestors and past, mixed with his victims desires to reunite with their family (but remmick's wants take precedent which is why no one just leaves him and goes to eat the town or something)

every sammie/peraline scene was cute as hell. ill never get over the "im married/happily?" exchange hehe. sammie being down to be an cheater is a great bit for him. he was so smooth with it as well. sammie is smooth when he wants to be.

i wish, i wish, i wish sammie and pearline got a song or something together.

when all the vampire stuff was happening but pearline was being kinda difficult, i think it sorta, highlights that shes not apart of the community in the same way everyone else is seems like. i think this makes her a...foil/parallel/whatever to mary in a certain way (theyre even introduced at the same time)

sammie keeping hold of his guitar, and getting it fixed, is really powerful as how he expressed himself and his musical gift that God (as per the movie imo) gave him.

interesting that both smoke and sammies father tell him to give up the guitar, but for different reasons, sammie doesnt listen to either of them

annies spiritual work (hoodoo) is pretty interesting in connection to the movies themes between connection with their/our ancestors (also id say that within the movie and the black american context christianity has been a tool of colonization and assimilation, even tho christianity has existed in africa for a long time, listen dont ask be the specific number but i think its more than a millennium, but yknow what i mean) especially cause it works and the prayer does not

very funny that remmick does his little song and dance of "oh pls help me" on the KKK couples porch but they only let him in after he flashes his gold at them. and then he tried the same trick at the juke joint. the loser cant talk his way into anywhere lol. (i also dont know much about irish mythology, spirituality, ect outside of pop culture stuff, but i feel like remmick may also tie into fae from irish myth as well as like being a vampire)

Starting for Lux because I think there’s not enough about her,, this will be messy also..!

I HATE how her original story was written I’m gonna be real here, i feel a lot of the seriousness of her issues get treated as ‘not that deep’ because of her og story was a shitpost..!

she’s disabled imo, her lore makes no sense if she’s not, like, what do you mean they bullied her for . Having hair . Not even about the crack but about having fire hair 😭?? I think it’s also more interesting to see her through a disability lens, because a lot of her experiences make more sense with that. They rejected her because she wasn’t like the rest; because she couldn’t do certain stuff, because her disability made her look weird.

(( I think its also important!!! To mention!! That Lux was also not like . Just taking the bullying, she did defend herself at some point, but it didn’t help because people now saw her as a threat, being WEIRD is a big part of her character and I don’t like how people just make her . Take it all without saying anything when its shown that she has the ability to defend herself ))

I think how her parents are seen is also important to her character, Cross is seen as a threat and is hated,, and Dream is The Guardian Of Positivity™ Who’s Related To The Guy No One Likes(nightmare).

Dream and Lux can be interesting when you think about how Lux doesn’t really . Have many reasons to be happy/positive . she’s unable to make any friends because everyone sees her as weird(and a big part of that is related to the magic she inherited from Dream), she probably deals with pain from the crack and also probably a lot of issues with how she looks because if everyone makes her feel ugly, etc etc etc. Its also interesting how negativity is so associated with Nightmare(guy who is hated and who hates his dad) and how it could harm Dream(iirc)…. Something something Lux has OCD

I think her rejecting her own negative emotions because of the idea of “My dad will hate me forever if I feel this” is interesting,, not saying Dream would hate her or that he’s a bad parent or anything,, but maybe it’s something that she internalized on her own, not only because of Dream and Nightmare but also maybe because of her own experiences aswell

Anddd here’s my design for her :333 her staff/cane thingy is to help her with mobility(because she has vision problems) and also to channel magic better because I headcanon her disability to be in the same spectrum as Raven’s disability,, if that makes sense ((a lot of inspo from @/shynetyme06, @/keuwibloom and your silly.. Lu…. ))

I think Shino is very awesome and I think everyone should agree and I think people should see her more than just . Younger sister who is dumb and cute . Or whatever,, I think shino is interesting when you explore how she’s canonically depressed and how she’s portrayed as an adult

I think it’s also interesting how she interacts with people, she views herself as unlovable/useless and often pushes others away because of that. She also bullied but—differently to lux— she’s seen as weaker and easier to manipulate, and considering her issues with self worth, maybe she knows she’s gullible and naive but thats the only way she feels she can hold relationships!!! By letting others use her as they like!!! I think a lot of Shino’s struggles come from wanting to be liked, she wants to be someone(or like,, something to someone),, she wants to have value and . oh no . Raven parallels . As mentioned before, she also pushes others away out of insecurity, like whenever she feels she isn’t useful for others people anymore..

I also think that she’s not as dumb like people(in-universe and the fandom) think she is, she’s not socially smart but that doesn’t define how smart she is on other aspects,, she’s also 10 and I think people judge her intelligence too hard.

Adult Shino,, i think she’s very interesting aswell, i think the idea of her becoming a scientist is interesting!! Specially how it subverts the expectations you have for her. Her general portrayal is as someone who’s dumb and doesn’t exist beyond her family/relationships, this is also how she views herself*, and now you see her adult version being a scientist who is heavily implied to have a very distant relationship with her family/friends besides Neón,, idk there’s something about that thats interesting to me

* which also, think its interesting how fandoms usually treat characters who have insecurities by solely characterizing them as their insecurities?? Like, Shino’s main issue is that she depends on people and the fandom only includes her when talking about other people without considering what’s healthy for her??

Adult Shino is very sad imo, little girl who is depressed and depends on people while being overly naive grows into adult woman who’s also depressed and now barely has a support system after creating distance between her and her family, and is hyper aware of everything. I do wish more people did more about her… like what is she investing with Neón? What exactly happened to cause distance between her and her family?? Is she evil because I think she’s allowed to be evil actually(/j)

I also think the shino comics(basically like, roleplays that a lot of afterdeath kid creators participated in and also has crazy lore) are also cool, specially for dynamics that include her(specially regarding Ichigo, Raven and other afterdeath girls) but also because it introduces!! having some thoughts about the dean/john dynamic

the thing about deanjohn as a ship is that it’s pretty much non existent in canon. i think the same thing could be said about samjohn too, but it’s easier to view them from a romantic perspective, because sam and john actually do have sexual chemistry (the dead man’s blood fight was extremely sexually charged, sam was acting bratty and john was one second away from bending him over the hood of the impala), john canonically stalked sam at stanford and we also know that sam reminds him of his dead wife (as mentioned in his journal)

now going back to deanjohn, one thing that i find very delicious about them is how dean’s hero worship of john and his faith in him blatantly parallels sam’s faith in dean and his hero worship of him. and imo, it works best when viewed from the platonic perspective. most people tend to see it as some kind of romantic attraction, and that’s okay as long as it’s in the context of fanon, but in reality there’s nothing romantic or sexual about it. and i know certain people might disagree with me, but the most interesting thing about the deanjohn dynamic is its parallelism with samdean, where dean eventually morphs into john, and sam eventually becomes dean in their relationship (the cycles)

the only difference is that at some point dean confronted john and called him out on some of his mistakes, whereas sam kept excusing and justifying all of dean’s problematic actions and became more submissive towards him as time went by

okay re: tana. i put these thoughts as tags on a different post originally but i think i will also put them here on their own:

assessing whether tana fits the predatory woc trope is thorny. like it's not at all cut and dry like liu in nightwing 96 or shado in ga88; in those cases an asian woman takes advantage of a white boy/man, but in tana's case its like… kesel doesn't actually think she's done anything wrong? the narrative even props her up as the morally upright and responsible one - like in aos502 when she kicks out rex and roxy and says they're trying to take advantage of kon. so like on the one hand yes a woc grooming a white boy fits the trope. on the other well. kesel didn't think he was writing grooming. he thought it was just the hot older woman fantasy, presumably bc he thought boys can't be abused by women.

like in the case of knockout, she's bad because she lied about committing that murder and used kon for her reputation/as an escape vehicle to dodge the law. she is not written as being in the wrong for grooming him. the only problem is that she's a villain; the fact that she's an adult woman dating and making a lot of sexual innuendos at a 15/16 year old boy is never addressed, because to kesel, that isn't actually a problem.

as far as tana goes, it's… hm. dissectable? to me, that one of tana's most consistent character traits is ambition. that she is shown to be using kon for her career, and that she isn't portrayed negatively for doing that? like the people who comment on it are generally written off as assholes in the wrong who are being shitty to tana, like vinnie edge in the bit w stinger where he blackmails her with her job. when people at work gossip about her dating a teenager behind her back, or talk about the conflict of interest re: her dating the hero she's always reporting on, she isn't really written as actually being in the wrong - she's written as a woman faced with a somewhat hostile working environment where people refuse to understand her. like, yes, she wants to use kon for her career, but she's still a Good Person™ for it (unlike, say, rex).

like kesel so clearly wanted the reader to like and sympathize with her and see her as the best love interest. he parallels her to lois directly at least once. she's mature and responsible and a classy woman with a job who thinks ahead. he wanted her to contrast with kon, who is a brash teenager fully living in the moment and concerned mostly with fun and the now. (and it's wild bc kesel writes it like she's supposed to be good for him in that regard but it comes off as like. uh. yeah man that is a grown ass woman dating a teenager. of course she thinks he's immature. even their breakup is written very much to portray kon as the one in the wrong - sympathetically to him, sure, but he took her away from her job and ignored her demands to go back and her protests that she was working on something important, because he wanted to go out with her for a day of impulsive fun, which was immature of him and disrespectful of her job, so of course she walks away. it's in line with her career ambition as a character trait, and it's written very sympathetically to her.)

and it's just so tangled up in kesel's fantasies of what teenage boys clearly desire. like imo it's genuinely not easy to say definitively that she fits the predatory woc stereotype, entirely bc kesel is so seemingly unaware that he's writing her being a predator. he writes her as a sympathetic character that a lot of other characters like and respect, such as dubbilex or sam makoa - the fact that any of her behavior is predatory goes entirely unacknowledged by the narrative. the only people who say she's weird for dating a kid are people she, and thereby effectively the narrative, brushes off as not understanding the bond she and kon have. which, ironically, is exactly the argument you often made see in cases of real grooming. (same as how in aos502, she, a grown-ass adult, describes this 15 year old she just met three weeks ago as her best friend. red flag much??? except kesel again isn't writing it as that.)

like, idk man, tana as a character and what she means narratively are kind of hard to pin down, because of the cognitive dissonance between what kesel thought he was writing vs what he actually wrote. he seemed aware that he was writing things that were like, actually fucked up! but at the same time narratively refused to actually engage with any of them as exploitative and harmful - kon's relationship with rex leech is another example of this. it's wild. lots to ponder there, though.

compiled all of choromatsus handwriting that i could find bc i love him

i realize these were all made by different teams and have different sources (anime/games/webkuji/etc) but there are some similarities between them all and i think its cute. i'll try to make it easier for ppl that cannot read japanese too

(note: some of these may or may not be valid criticisms, im not a native japanese speaker but i got my bachelors in japanese. idk if this means anything to anyone im just pointing out things that im noticing and maybe it will be interesting to you. if you notice anything else interesting feel free to add)

commonalities i noticed:

sometimes will combine multiple character strokes into one (normal thing to do, i've seen some native speakers do this)

with a few exceptions (mt takao for some reason), generally neat handwriting. proper and easy to read. not too big, not too small, not over stylized, but not messy either. very choromatsu

letter in s1e24

very nice handwriting, legible and neat. this is closest to how i think i would picture his handwriting. i know that the staff across different ososan things probably don't care too deeply about keeping minute handwriting details consistent and that's why they're all gonna look different but i like this one best for him.

new years cards in s2e13

very cute, love the stupid drawing of himself. everything very nice and tidy. to me these characters look a much curlier and rounder than the ones in the letter.

for both the letter and the new years cards it looks like he was careful to properly write out all the strokes of the kanji, even for more complicated ones like 緊張 and 就職. we see in mt takao that his handwriting gets a LOT messier. i know the real reason is because it was probably different animators that did his handwriting, but i'm choosing to believe that in canon it's because both of these are more fancy/formal letters addressed to people, whereas the trip guide is just for him and his brothers and doesn't necessarily need to look nice.

also i adore his tendency to add little drawings to things, like this and the mt takao guide he's everything

trip guide from mt. takao s3e8. his handwriting here, for some reason, is exceptionally bad especially compared to everything else. he writes like a little kid and i love his shitty little drawings. he's so cute.

my teachers would always correct my kanji down to the tiniest strokes, if i wrote like this is class i would get scolded so bad. you can see him combining his strokes together for 記念撮影, this will continue for the other pictures too. cute detail imo

the 昼 in 昼食 is definitely written wrong, but the second kanji 食 might be a little nitpicky. technically that bottom part is three different strokes, not two crossed over each other

more of him combining the strokes together. i wouldn't necessarily say that's wrong, since i've seen people do that before; it's probably just a habit that happens over time. i do it in english too

HOWEVER, he did write the 日 radical in 撮影 wrong here. previously, i thought he was just combining strokes again so that it looked like three lines instead of two (note 3 and 4 are two parallel lines, he just didn't lift his pen up)

but when you look at this it's clear that he very much did write three lines this time. that's the wrong radical

anyway

another example of him writing a two stroke character with just one. again, this is fine, ive seen people write their characters like this. however it looks bad when he does it here

i love how he wrote "campfire" i love how for some reason he didn't keep the letter sizing consistent or straight. also his little campfire drawing

very tidy, combines a couple strokes together. both 松 (matsu) characters look like he combines the last two strokes together instead of writing them as two separate ones

and he does a similar thing with the right half of 野 in Matsuno

this one he writes every stroke and doesn't combine them and that's probably because different people worked on these and the tiny details like this don't matter to anyone but me. or you could say that he wrote a little neater in high school and started simplifying things as he got older.

i think his handwriting looks very good here actually. idk how to describe it but i like when handwriting looks like this specific way in japanese. i've seen other people that have handwriting like this and it just looks so nice. like the characters seem to vary in size, but somehow it makes it a little easier to read imo?

like in the first bullet point (underlined in yellow), the す in 多すぎる is a little big, but like it looks nice. in the second bullet point (blue), the の in 世の中 is slightly smaller but it emphasizes the kanji on either side of it. the stroke on the side of the か characters are written a little longer than usual (red). like it just looks nice, everything is shaped really nice and whenever i see people that have this handwriting i always try to emulate it lol

this one is a bit messier than the others. the way he wrote チョロ just doesn't look as nice as the way he wrote it in airport matsu and nostalgic moments. the way the て is written is more curved compared to the others. also the 界 kanji (blue) is written in a way that looks weird to me, and kara from this same set also writes the kanji that way so i think the same person might have written all of them lol

also interesting is that he writes き differently in this one

i was told by one of my professors that you're supposed to write さ and き with the upper and lower parts disconnected when writing by hand. it's only in text that they're connected. but i've still seen some people write them in the connected way

in all the other examples, choromatsu doesn't write them connected like that, just this one.

my lovely boy and his nonsense words and lies. the handwriting here comes off as very cutesy to me, at least compared to the others. some of the ways he writes, especially any box-like shape, seems round in a way. he also connects the right half of 野 again.

overall writes very neatly, altho a lot of the kanji here seems like its very big on the top and smaller on the bottom, and a lot of the letters seem more rounded. all the other examples just feel like the writing is a bit more angular, with the exception of the new years cards.

extra: coloring book

the way he wrote his name here is messier than the other examples. i like that he added little commentary on his own coloring though ("looks good!" "the tail was black too i believe") maybe he colored this with a paintbrush????? the strokes look as if he was trying to write quickly with a brush as if it was a pen. so maybe that's why its a little messier

theyre younger than 21 so its considered underage drinking which is illegal in the US, might explain why kates hiding it since her parents r super strict especially her mother (strict parents creates the sneakiest kid and a great liar who is better at hiding secrets, same goes for abusive parents IMO so 🤷‍♀️)

also…nathan appears to rely on drugs or both, while kate seems to turn to alcohol(and drugs??-unconfirmed) as a coping mechanism (personally i dont think kate is on drugs and her being ok doing that, it doesnt seem to add up with her character at all)

4. daddy & mommy issues (both r dealing with difficult & unsupportive relatives, struggling to be ‘a perfect son/daughter with 0 mistakes' to satisfy parent’s expectations)
