ỌBALUAYE - Review by Tayoriṣa

ỌBALUAYE - The movie has been showing on YouTube for days now and I’ve only had time to watch it last midnight. And I must confess, it is a revealing and enlightening watch for me. The movie produced by Ifasooto Ifawumi Adeyemo gives deep insight into Yoruba culture and a genuine understanding of the being and divinity of Ọbalúayé oníwọ̀wọ́ àdo(dotted with small gourds) — highlighting the praises, customs, costumes and significance of this global renowned Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀ (primordial being) of the Yoruba worldview.

The praise poetry rendition done by Araba Awo Ifayẹmi Ẹlẹbuib��n (Araba of Osogbo) in the opening scene was one of the highlights of the movie for me — The praises were powerfully rendered and sonically satisfying with details to the divinity of Ọbaluaye as a healing power.

Deliberate showcasing of Yoruba lucrative traditional business that many are not paying attention to; epo ṣíṣẹ́ (palm oil production), àgbẹ̀dẹ (blacksmithing), also the moral philosophy of ìṣẹ lògùn ìṣẹ́ portrayed by the producer in act himself; securing a car for uber and he delivered in honesty to his benefactor — portraying the ọmọlúàbí ethics.

Juxtaposing the alacrity of believing amongst genders was highlighted in how the mother quickly believed the unseen plans of Ade Eleto compared to the skepticism of Olori Ẹbi. Also, the interesting conversation of Olori Ẹbi suggesting modern ways of blacksmithing are making a fortune in arts (metallurgy) today compared to the ancient times is worthy of mention. Oh the comic reliefs from the Iyalode during the Nysc party and Baba kọlapọ’s funny interactions with the awakọ are highlights too, a good movie for laughs and distractions this season.

Fún Ìkádí ( In conclusion), worthy observation and maybe correction(if it will be taken). Mistranslations: *Stop translating Àṣẹ to Amen. *In a scene where the actor was praising the initiates, it was translated as deities. *In a scene where Araba awo Ifayẹmi Ẹlebuibọn made mentioned of àgbò, it was translated as a dog. These are a few mistakes I observed and suffice to say it’s a great production that I will recommend it’s watch — rating it 7/10. I took some interesting scenes in screenshots for fun and to compliment the review. Please watch this movie so you can give a review too.

Tongues Wag over Siju Iluyomade’s Lavish 60th Birthday Bash

Pastor (Mrs.) Siju Iluyomade, wife of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David Parish in Victoria Island, is well-known as a great fashionista with a penchant for expensive jewellery. Despite her love for fashion, Iluyomade has proven over time that her life goes beyond fashion. As the convener of Arise Women, she has impacted society with her benevolence to the vulnerable.

The stylish woman was the cynosure of all eyes last Sunday, 18th February 2024, when a Special Service was held in her honour at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David, Oniru, Lagos. A Special Diamond Ball Reception was also held at Eko Hotel and Suites.

As gathered by Society Watch, the event was a gathering of who-is-who in the nation’s high society. Prominent Nigerians that graced the event include the banking wizard and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, First Ladies of Lagos and Ogun Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun.

Others are Toke Makinwa, Chief Rasaq Okoya and wife Shade, veteran broadcaster Chief Bisi Olatilo, Chief Samuel Adedoyin and wife, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Bisi Fayemi, Chief Nike Akande, Abiola Dosunmu, Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Bintu Tinubu, Former Deputy Governor of Lagos, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and Sarah Sosan among others.

But, a few hours after the pictures and video of the lavish event hit social media, her critics pummelled her with accusations of insensitivity. Many expressed their shock to see prominent members of the RCCG, including family members, church elders, and friends of the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe trooping out to the dance floor in celebration of Iluyomade’s 60th birthday.

Being the church where Wigwe worshipped before his death, he was not only a worshipper, but a prominent member who donated millions of naira to the church during his lifetime.

So, not a few people expected the church to mourn him, for at least, a considerable period. But the RCCG authorities clearly had a different opinion, thus they rallied around the ‘birthday girl’ as she threw a colourful party, more or less a carnival, to celebrate her diamond anniversary.

Her loyalists and fans also quickly came to her defence claiming that the party was shifted thrice for some reason so it wouldn’t be nice if she moved it again for whatever reason.

This defence, nevertheless did not go down well with the family of the late banker as they have allegedly written a letter to RCCG, City of David, warning them to stay clear from the funeral of their son. The family frowned at the path toed by the pastor, his wife, and the church considering the amount of huge support, both morally and financially Wigwe contributed to the church in his lifetime.

Vanguard reliably gathered that Chief Mrs Lawson died in the early hours of today at the age of 72 years. Lawson who doubled as the Iyalode of Egbaland, was the past president of Abeokuta Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ABEOCCIMA) and NACCIMA. Executive Secretary of ABEOCCIMA, AbdulRahman Maku, confirmed the death in a statement he made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. The statement read, “We regret to announce the demise of NACCIMA past President and ABEOCCIMA Matron/ Board of Trustees, Iyalode Alaba Lawson, Iyalode of Yorubaland, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 28th October 2023. Burial arrangement to be announced later by the family” “May God Almighty grant repose of the soul of Iyalode, the statement concluded. Lawson was born on January 18, 1951. She was a business magnate, entrepreneur and academician. She was once Chairman of the Board of the Governing Council, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ogun State. Chief Lawson was also the president pro-tempore of the Forum of Female Traditional Rulers in Nigeria. She became the President of the Abeokuta Chambers of Commerce in 1995 and later became the President of Ogun Council of Chambers of Commerce in year 2000 and headed it till 2002. And in 2009 she established a Microfinance Bank known as Abestone Microfinance Bank to boost SMES. On May 25, 2017, Alaba became the first woman to be elected President of National Association Of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines And Agriculture (NACCIMA) following the expiration of the tenure of Dr. Benny Edem.
