« [I]f Donald Trump and his Catholic convert Veep, JD Vance, are ready to cheer, then they should think again. Cardinal Robert Prevost has chosen the name Leo XIV – and if you’re a papal Leo, you tend to be a reformer at the progressive end of Catholicism. That Prevost has decided to become Leo XIV will make Catholics think immediately of the last Leo – Leo XIII – and his 1891 encyclical or teaching document, Rerum Novarum, which outlined workers’ rights to a fair wage, safe working conditions and the rights of workers to belong to trade unions. If Pope Francis was the People’s Pope, then Leo XIV is all set to be the Workers’ Pope. »
— Catholic journalist Catherine Pepinster writing at The Guardian.
Going back 250 years, of the (now) 18 popes since the start of the American Revolution, the three most what we would now call "progressive" would be...
John XXIII (1958-1963)
Francis (2013-2025)
Leo XIII (1878-1903)
Leo XIII issued an encyclical called Rerum Novarum which in modern terms called for collective bargaining and fair working conditions for workers – with emphasis on the working poor. Though the encyclical also rejected violence and forced confiscation of property as advocated by militant socialists of that era, Rerum Novarum was regarded as radical by powerful conservative elements inside the church hierarchy. So when Leo XIII died, the cardinals elected Pius X who was a blatant reactionary.
So if papal names set the tone for papal reigns, Chicagoan Leo XIV might be seen as pro-labor and against the more rapacious aspects of capitalism. Trump and his broligarch buddies can't be terribly pleased about that. While Leo XIV won't be wildly "woke", he's not the pope that MAGA was hoping for.

JD Vance Is a Working Class Phony
J.D. Vance wants to con America into believing he’s some “working class hero.”
Baloney!
He worked for a law firm that lobbied for Purdue Pharma — the company that pleaded guilty to three felonies for its role in creating America’s opioid crisis.
He's a former venture capitalist who benefited from tax loopholes designed for the super-rich.
He won his Senate seat thanks to tech billionaire Peter Thiel, who spent $15 million on Vance’s Senate campaign.
He visited a picket line for a photo op, but opposed legislation to protect workers’ rights to organize.
He weakened his own railway safety bill at the request of rail and chemical lobbyists.
He opposed the Inflation Reduction Act, which has unleashed a wave of investment in American manufacturing and created over 300,000 clean energy jobs so far.
J.D. Vance isn’t a “populist.” He’s a phony.
He doesn’t give a fig about workers.

Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day:
We have to talk about this absolutely batshit New York Times piece—the headline alone turned my stomach: “White House Assesses Ways to Persuade Women to Have More Children.” “Persuade” is a polite way to put it, given that forced birth is the law of the land in half the country! But this isn’t just about abortion bans: Since Trump took office, the country has been handed over to a newly emboldened bro-natalist cabal—men like Elon Musk and JD Vance, desperate to increase the birthrate, whether women like it or not. Here are just a few of the ideas the Times reports are being tossed around at the White House:
A “National Medal of Motherhood” to women with six or more children;
Reserving 30% of government fellowships for those who are married with children;
State-funded education programs teaching women and girls about their menstrual cycle, “so they can better understand when they are ovulating and able to conceive”;
$5,000 cash as a ‘baby bonus’.
First of all, it’s telling that this administration will do anything other than what families really need. If the Trump administration was actually interested in supporting parents, they’d be pushing for paid parental leave, subsidized childcare, and an end to laws that make it deadly for people to give birth. But Republicans don’t care about making the world better, safer, or healthier for American families and children—they just want women to have more babies. What happens after that? They couldn’t care less. Actually, scratch that—because the administration’s “baby boom” push isn’t just about boosting the birthrate. It’s about reasserting a rigid, traditional vision of American family life: one where parents are straight, women are submissive, and the bro-natalists in charge get to pretend it’s all for the good of the nation. As Times reporter Caroline Kitchener points out, the White House has an ideologically-specific definition of ‘family’: Straight married couples with children. Consider what that means for some of the administration’s proposals: If 30% of fellowships (like the Fulbright) are reserved for married parents—and the administration only recognizes straight marriages—they’d be creating a deliberately discriminatory quota, excluding LGBTQ people from prestigious awards and funding. Imagine how many other government marriage promotion programs they could use to leave certain families behind.
The Trump Regime is proposing natalist ideas, such as creating a National Medal of Motherhood to women with six or more children, $5,000 baby bonus, and a quota of 30% of government fellowships set aside for married parents with children. The catch is: only straight married couples with children are eligible.
A lot of these ideas that they are pushing come from Nazi Germany, Stalin-era Russia, and Ceaușescu’s Romania.

On Monday, former president Donald Trump announced his vice presidential running mate: Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
There are endless reasons why I find this alarming, from Vance’s anti-LGBTQ legislation to his disparaging remarks about DEI initiatives. But I want to focus on an old speech that’s been recirculating since the news broke.
In 2021, Vance spoke at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s conference on the Future of American Political Economy, where he blamed "the childless left" for the nation's woes. As a woman who’s intentionally childfree, I am livid over this rhetoric. According to him, we have "no physical commitment to the future of this country."
...
Vance specifically called out several Democrats for not having "a personal and direct stake in [our country] via their own offspring": Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, and Kamala Harris (disregarding that the Vice President is the stepmother of her husband’s two children). Since this speech, Buttigieg and his husband have adopted two children.
...
Vance bemoaned the current state of "family formation" and "birth rates" in the US. But in true Republican fashion, he didn't bother exploring why many Americans are having fewer children.
...
Did Vance propose sound solutions to the "civilization crisis" like addressing climate change? Of course not. (He doesn’t believe that people contribute to climate change.) Other than praising Hungary's pro-natal policies, the only suggestion he offered was this preposterous idea: "Let’s give votes to all children in this country, but let’s give control over those votes to the parents of the children."
He continued, "Doesn’t this mean that nonparents don’t have as much of a voice as parents? Doesn’t this mean that parents get a bigger say in how democracy functions?" He answered his own questions with a "yes" after admitting "the Atlantic and the Washington Post and all the usual suspects" would criticize him.
...
After Vance received blowback for his ludicrous suggestion, he appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight, where he double downed. "We are effectively run in this country...by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too. And it's just a basic fact." [...]

Is J. D. Vance the worst vp pick of your lifetime?
My lifetime has included Sarah Palin, John Edwards, and Dan Quayle, so Vance isn't even in the conversation, unfortunately.

^^^ If there's anything more repulsive than Donald Trump, it's a naked Donald Trump. Though at least we'd see how accurate Stormy Daniels's description of "Toad" really is.
ProTip: When your party has just 50.57% of the seats in the House of Representatives, it's no "mandate".

Paige Skinner at HuffPost:
President Donald Trump was booed Sunday during the FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as he handed trophies to Chelsea, the winning team. Trump was booed several times throughout the night. First, during the National Anthem, he was shown on the Jumbotron, according to USA Today. Then, later, while presenting trophies to the winners. The Club World Cup, the global competition between club teams, is seen as a preview to the World Cup, which will also host its final game at MetLife Stadium next year. FIFA moved its offices into Trump Tower in New York City, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced last week. It’s just the latest example of the organization building ties with the president before the U.S. hosts the World Cup next year. Sunday marked the anniversary of the attempted assassination of Trump. During a sit-down interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, Donald Trump reflected on the moment, saying he didn’t know what going on, but that he got “whacked.”
Traitor 47 rightly got booed big time by the crowd at the FIFA Club World Cup Final Sunday.
