I Sing the Body Electric: A Photo Shoot with Jacolby Satterwhite

Anyone who knows Jacolby, knows he's a huge fan of Lana del Rey so one might think, if you follow pop culture, that I chose the title of this post and his moniker based on her song.  Quite frankly, my head was wrapped around the short story of the same name by Ray Bradbury. Written in 1969, it tells the story of a family who adopts a surrogate android grandmother after the death of the mother.  One of the main characters, Agatha, is unwilling to accept an electrical grandmother as a surrogate, until the grandmother demonstrates her own immortality.  As one might have it, both Bradbury and del Rey were inspired by Walt Whitman's poem, I Sing the Body Electric.  For Whitman and in del Rey's song, the body has primacy in its ability to generate experience, and it can connect both erotically and spiritually with bodies of others. In Bradbury's work, he takes it a step further and debates the nature of love and can a machine provide it? 

Jacolby's work utilizes 3-D animation and digital space as a utopian place to explore memory, identity and history.  He combines virtual, dreamlike spaces with live action, 3-D architectural forms of his mother's drawings and writings, art historical and biblical references, fantastical structures, overpowering vaginas and a slew of other characters.  His avatar "vogues" or simulates sex, unifying this universe and serves as a conduit between the soul, the world and its alternate reality.  We had an awesome time photographing The Body Electric.
