Chapter 2
Just when it seems like everythingâs evened out, and the balance seems serene, see the fool Iâll be, still running âround on the flesh rampage.
âHey!â Fliss greeted Bonnie as she walked over to where the woman was supervising the after school club.
âHiya!â Bonnie smiled âYou heard from Frank today?â
âYeah, before.â Fliss smiled, before she looked and Bonnie âI gotta say, that video of SimonâŚâ
âHeâs an idiot.â Bonnie shook her head âPunching his own reflectionâŚI meanâŚâ
âIâm not gonna lie, itâs probably the funniest thing Iâve seen in ages.â Fliss giggled and Bonnie snorted, shaking her head again. At that point Mary came running over, her cheeks pink
âHey Lissy.â âHey sweetheart, you ready to go?â
âYeah.â
âGood, because I got a surprise for you!â
âMe?â
âYup!â
âWhere is it?â
âWe gotta go pick it up.â
âOh, okâŚbye Miss Stevenson!â
âSee you Mary!â Bonnie smiled as she started to head off to Flissâ car âHey, give me a callâŚwe can do lunch Sunday before the boys get back.â
âSure.â Fliss nodded. âIâll text you.â
With a final goodbye she headed after Mary and climbed into the driverâs side.
âWhereâs Thor?â Mary asked.
âHeâs at Mum and Dadâs with Rupert and Fred.â she said, âI thought after our surprise we could stay there for the weekend, use the pool and the Cinema RoomâŚâ
âOkâŚâ Mary looked at her suspiciously.
âI promise youâre gonna like it!â
âJust tell me.â Mary looked at her as Fliss set off driving.
âSure you wanna know?â
âYouâre as bad as Frank.â The girl rolled her eyes and Fliss laughed.
âWeâre going to pick Steve up from the airport.â
Maryâs face split into a huge grin, it was a well-known fact that besides Bill, Flissâ brother was basically her favourite person that wasnât Frank on the planet.
âUncle Steeby is coming to stay?â she looked at Fliss.
âYup for a whole month. He has some work in Orlando and Tampa so heâs gonna be staying in town for a while, and then in Easter Sian and the twins are flying over.â
âOh man!â Mary grinned, laying her head back on the seat âThis is great!â
Maryâs excitement seemed to increase the nearer they got to the Airport, and Fliss had to practically hold her down in the seat as she parked the car, telling her to wait a second. Once sheâd managed to park they headed into the arrivals lounge and little after 15 minutes later her brother appeared, towing his suitcase behind him.
âHey Stack!â he grinned as Mary flung herself at him and he swept her up in a hug âHowâs it hanging?â âSame old, same old!â she grinned and he let out a laugh before he placed her down and turned to Fliss.
âOh my God!â he smiled as Fliss walked over to him âLook at you!â
She laughed âI knowâŚâ with a nod she looked down âNothing until 16 weeks and then whamâŚnow I feel like itâs getting bigger every day.â
He pulled her into his arms and gave her the usual bear hug before the three of them headed out to the car. On the way back to the house, Steve filled Fliss in on what exactly he was doing. The construction company he owned was in the running for a very big job in Orlando building a complete village of holiday villas not far from Lake Buena Vista. As such he was out here to meet a few people and attend the Bidders Conference, whilst also taking a look at some potential office buildings in Lakeland.
âIf we win this tender Fliss, itâs going to be huge.â he smiled at her âWeâre talking millions.â
âThatâs great.â she smiled âYouâve really blown it up since Dad handed over the reins, Iâm really pleased for you!â
âI got lucky.â
âNo, it was hard work.â Fliss glanced at him.
âFrank says you make your own luck.â Mary added.
âSee!â Fliss grinned at her brother. âSo, would you guys move out here orâŚâ
âIâm tempted.â he said, âAs with anything, Iâll need a project team who can oversee the local suppliers and labour that type of thing, manage the schedules and what notâŚbut our head offices will still be in Liverpool, so Iâm undecided. Either way Iâll be spending a lot more time here, certainly in the first 12 months whilst it all gets up and running.â
âHow does Sian feel about it?â
âSheâs excited. She knows what it means to me, to the business. Obviously she realises it means more time apart as Iâll be out here quite often butâŚâ
âIs it selfish of me to be happy about that?â Fliss smiled and Steve laughed.
âNope, because we all know Iâm the best big brother in the world.â
Fliss grinned and shook her head as Mary began to enthusiastically talk to Steve about school and University and the Girl Scout group she was in. Fliss interjected whenever she needed to but other than that she was happy to let the two of them chat away.
Once home Steve headed over to the Annex where he would be staying whilst Mary went outside to play with the dogs, Fred happy to oversee things from his spot on a chair on the large decking platform which-over looked the pool area. Steve appeared an hour or so later having showered and changed into a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, Fliss grinning at him, calling him a tourist. Whilst it wasnât cold by cold standards, she found it chillier having grown used to the blazing heat of the summer. Steve, who had come from the chilly early spring in England, simply rolled his eyes and handed her the box he had in his hand.
âItâs a present from me and Sian.â he smiled.
Fliss glanced down and smiled at the selection box of Pukka Tea bags.
âSteeby this is great!â she beamed âIâve been struggling to find them out here since Sian recommended them.â
She gently opened the box and glanced at the various herbal teas. There were 12 different flavours such as Peppermint and Liquorice, Ginger and Manuka Honey, Chamomile and Rose to name but a few. There was even a handwritten note inside from Sian, explaining which ones had helped her with various symptoms she felt during her pregnancy. She closed the purple and gold box and looked up at Steve, tears in her eyes.
âHey, come on Titch!â he laughed as she fell into his arms, chuckling herself at her ridiculous tears âItâs just tea bags.â âItâs really thoughtful, thank you.â she stepped back, wiping her eyes âFucking hormones.â Steve chuckled, rubbing her back slightly before she turned and began pulling the rest of the stuff out for dinner.
âWanna help?â she asked.
âYou really want me to?â He smirked âIâve still not forgot the time we made brownies and set fire to the curtains at the Farm house.â âOk, first off those curtains were rank, as Mum said when Dad came home and hit the roof, second off, they were pot brownies and we were already stoned after smoking a load! Cooking and being high do not mix.â
Steve laughed âGod, poor Mum didnât know what to do. Came home, found us both on the floor eating them, with burnt curtains hanging at the window.â âShe knew we were stoned, she told me.â Fliss grinned, handing Steve a knife âSaid she lied to dad that it had been her to get us off the hook.â âWell that didnât work because Dad told me he knew full well it was us. He made me pay for the new curtains and told me that if I ever let you smoke that stuff again he was going to beat me within an inch of my life.â Fliss laughed âHe was so full of shit, he never raised a hand to either of us. Never would either.â âNo, but the threat was there. Even if I was 22 at the time, scared the shit out of me.â
âThankfully we both grew up since then, huh?â Fliss shrugged, as she grabbed a chopping board to start carving up the meat for the tacos.
âHmmm, debatable.â Steve nudged her. âAlthough I can safely say I havenât done weed since the twins were bornâŚas tempting as it was at times.â
âI canât remember the last time I did.â Fliss mused âWas certainly before I moved to Boston.â âFrankie boy not dabble every now and then?â
âNope.â Fliss said âHe doesnât smoke and says the last time he did pot it made him pull a whitey so he steers clear. Hardest thing he does now is Bourbon.â âHuhâŚâ Steve mused âI had him pegged as a bit of wild oneâŚâ âHeâs not.â Fliss shook her head âI mean he cuts loose when we go out, and I dread to think about the states heâs gonna be in this weekend butâŚâ she shrugged âHeâs well adjusted, sensible, level headedâŚcan be a bit of a child at times but, show me a man who isnât?â Steve shot her a look and she chuckled.
âSo, how is he?â Steve asked. âSeems like ages since I spoke to him.â âHeâs good.â Fliss smiled âHis work is going well. Heâs really excited about the baby.â her hand dropped to her bump. âWeâre gonna start looking for houses now our landlord had said he wonât hold us to our contract. Frankie wants to move as soon as we can so he can get a nursery ready but Iâm not bothered. Not like weâll need the extra space really until a few months after itâs born.â
âYouâd be surprised.â Steve raised an eyebrow âBabies accumulate a lot of stuffâŚâ âWell, weâll manage either way.â Fliss shrugged âMost important thing is theyâre safe and happy. We can figure the rest out as we go.â âYou gonna buy orâŚâ âHopefully.â Fliss nodded âWith work and stuff now we shouldnât have a problem borrowing now but, I donât know, weâre going to look into it properly once Jakeâs wedding is out of the way in a few weeks.â
Steve nodded and took a deep breath âYou know, I wasnât sure about you two at first, not because I didnât like Frank, I did, I mean I do but, well, I just thought after Dickhead that you needed time to heal and find yourself again.â Fliss looked at him as he chewed the inside of his lip before he turned to her. âBut then when I saw you again after your first Christmas together and then over the EasterâŚI dunno, you justâŚâ
Fliss smiled and looked down, shrugging âI might have healed in a lot of ways before I met Frank but I was still broken Steeb. Finding my way in a new relationship was hard work, it was dauntingâŚI constantly found myself automatically doing things I did with or for JohnâŚlike you know the first time Frank ever stayed over, in the morning I just got up and was about to make him coffee and he was so puzzled by it.â she shrugged âthat could have been so awkward but FrankâŚwell, he didnât let it feel that way. Simply told me to stay the fuck in bed.â âDonât wanna know.â Steve pulled a face and Fliss laughed.
âJoking aside, I know it used to bother him because it was almost like on a subconscious level I was comparing the two of them but he never once lost his temper, not really anyway, other than to tell me to stop putting him on a pedestal for being fucking normalâŚhis words, not mine.â she said, framing them in quotation marks with her fingers. âHe just gets it. He gets me.â âYou finished with the sales pitch?â Steve asked her and she narrowed her eyes at him as he laughed âYou donât need to convince me Titch, I like the guy, I just wasnât sure you were in the right place but it's obvious he helped you get there.â Fliss smiled.
âAnd Mum and Dad worship the ground he walks on.â Steve shrugged âLike seriouslyâŚâ
âAwww you jealous?â Fliss teased and Steve turned, pointing the small knife he was holding at her.
âBehave.â he smirked and Fliss laughed.
âI know what you mean thoughâŚwhenever we argue theyâre both like âyou need to stop being so hard on him, Lissyâ.â She snorted.
âWell, to be fair, you are a little bitâŚâ Steve shrugged âOh, I dunno, a bit of a pain in the ass at times.â âFuck you.â she sniggered, as Steve chuckled and once again looked down at her.
âIâm glad you found him. You deserve to be happy.â Fliss smiled, and let her brother give her another hug before she instructed him to get on with his allocated job of dicing onions if they wanted any chance of eating this side of summer. Between the two of them, they had dinner ready in half an hour and the three of them ate inside at the large kitchen table. It wasnât long after they finished that Frank Face timed. After a conversation with Mary, instructing her once more to behave, she handed the phone to Fliss who smiled at her man and excused herself for a little while so she could go talk to him in private. He told her they were off to play poker, promised he wouldnât gamble Bean and Maryâs inheritance away, before he apologetically said he needed to go and promised he would message her later, despite her insistence that he didnât need to keep checking in.
The siblings and Mary, plus animals migrated to the lounge of the villa as Steve yawned, desperately trying to keep himself awake as long as possible to counteract the time difference between Florida and their home in the North West of England. He ended up helping himself to a healthy shot of Billâs 12 year old Single Malt as Fliss had an apple juice mixed with lemonade, the 2 of them on the couch, the foot stools of the recliners in front of them whilst Mary led on the rug, playing on her computer.
At one point she let out a snigger, and Fliss looked at her suspiciously.
âWhat are you doing?â she asked.
âFrank before told me to stop doing maths and do something elseâŚso Iâm googling.â she shrugged.
âGoogling what?â
âRandom pregnancy factsâŚdid you know the longest pregnancy ever recorded was 375 days?â
âWhat?â Fliss spluttered âThatâs over a year!â
Mary grinned âand the shortest was 21 weeks and four daysâŚboth babies survived.â
Steve looked at Fliss, chuckling to himself as he took a drink of his scotch.
âWoah, your heart grows bigger tooâŚâ Mary said, âand your blood volume increases by 40-50%. Thatâs pretty cool.â
âNo wonder you get fatâŚâ Steve mused and Fliss picked up a cushion, hitting him in the face with it.
âAnd your voice can change!â Mary looked up at Fliss âSays here that it can get lowerâŚâ she studied her for a second before she nodded âTalk to meâŚâ âWhat do you want me to say?â Fliss asked, dropping her voice deliberately and Mary shook her head, rolling her eyes.
âYouâre doing a FrankâŚâ she sing songed.
âDoing a Frank?â Steve looked at his sister.
âCode for being an idiot.â Fliss smiled.
âYouâre 18 weeks right?â Mary continued.
âYeahâ
âIt says here thatâs the time the baby can hear soundsâŚbut it gets more responsive at 25-26 weeksâŚâ she paused âHave you felt Bean move yet?â
âNo.â Fliss shook her head, âbut apparently for your first baby itâs not uncommon for you not to feel it until after 20 weeks.â
âHuh, they call it quickeningâŚâ Mary mused then she grinned âI canât wait to feel it kicking you.â
âGee thanks StackâŚâ Fliss looked at her as Steve let out a loud laugh
âI bloody love this kid!â he grinned and Mary smiled back.
*****
Saturday flew by. Fliss had lessons all day at the yard, Mary hanging around to help Joanne with various tasks before she herself got to ride Monty. She was now fully walking, trotting and cantering off the line competently, so when she asked Fliss if they could try a little jump, seeing as Frank wasnât there to shit himself Fliss agreed.
Joanna set the cross poles up, leaving the jump at less than half a foot high, but it was enough for what they wanted to do.
âOkâŚsoâŚâ Fliss said, nudging the ground pole with her foot. âWeâre going to just trot him at this for the time being, so when he steps over this pole you have a count of one before he is going to take off. So you need to stand up⌠and fold forward slightly, giving him the reins. Show me.â Mary obediently stood up, and Fliss moved to help her adjust her legs so they didnât fling too far back.
âOk, goodâŚâ Fliss nodded. âJoannaâs gonna lead you over the first few times ok, and if you feel like youâre losing your balance then grab hold of this bit at the bottom of his mane. It wonât hurt him, I promise.â âOK, Iâm readyâŚâ Mary nodded.
âAlrightâŚâ Fliss said, stepping back. Joanna led Monty away, before they picked up trot and ran at the small jump.
âGet ready to fold!â Fliss instructed Mary, as she approached the pole. Doing exactly as she was told Mary leaned forward as Monty took off from the ground and landed perfectly after the jump. Mary sat back up and looked over her shoulder at the jump then to Fliss who gave her the thumbs up.
âWoah, did you see that?â Mary grinned, and Fliss nodded.
âSure did!â she laughed. âGo again?â
Mary nodded eagerly and Joanna laughed. âWell done kiddo!â
They repeated this 5 or 6 times more before Fliss asked Mary if she wanted to try on her own. Never one to back down she nodded so Joanne unclipped the line and Mary trotted Monty around in a circle before she came at the jump.
âOk, sit up and look straight between his ears at where youâre going.â Fliss said âDonât look downâŚâ Mary approached the jump and Fliss held her breath, but neednât have bothered. Monty, ever the pro took Mary over the poles easily and stopped a few strides at the other side, Mary letting out an excited yell.
âI did it!â
Fliss gave her a huge smile.
âCan we film it and send it to Frank?â
âDamned straight we can!â Fliss grinned, âDo it again.â
She pulled her phone out, filmed Mary once again jumping and then turned her phone off, slipping into her pocket as Mary rode Monty back over.
âThat was amazing!â the little girl was beaming ear to ear.
Fliss nodded âYeah, it was. You did really well Stack. You wanna walk him off now then and we can feed and go home?â Mary nodded as she turned Monty away to let him walk around the outside of the paddock. With a smile she grabbed her phone and sent the footage to Frank. He replied a few minutes later with a load of wide mouthed emojis accompanied by the words âJesus Christ, what did I say about keeping all 4 legs on the ground?â
âOh hush Sailor!â she replied âShe loved it. Now donât forget I want a photo of you and Greg in those suits before you go out.â âYes maâamâŚnow by my watch it must be nearly 6pm there. Take Mary and Bean home and get some rest.â
Rolling her eyes she responded about him being bossy to which he replied he was entitled to be as she was carrying his kid. A few more jokey messages were shared before Fliss promised to go home and Frank said he would talk to her later.
They grabbed a pizza on the way back and once more joined Steve for dinner, the 3 of them sitting in Billâs large cinema room later watching Avengers-Age of Ultron. Before it had finished Fliss fell asleep, to be woken by Steve at the end of the film, Mary laughing at her as she groaned and stretched out.
âSorry!â she grinned and Steve snorted.
âShe falls asleep all the time.â Mary laughed âFrank said the baby is like a parasite, sucking all her energy.â
âA parasite?â Fliss snorted indignantly, her hand falling to her bump âYou hear that Bean, thatâs your dad saying that. RudeâŚâ
âHe isnât wrong though.â Steve laughed. âSian used to refer to our two as the bloodsuckers.â Shaking her head Fliss stood up and looked at Mary, âBed, come on. Youâre out with Roberta tomorrow.â âAnywhere nice?â Steve asked Mary.
âJust to the beach.â came the reply. âI havenât seen her in a while so weâre gonna go watch the surfing competition. Roberta likes the shorts the men wear.â
âSure she does.â Steve smirked, laughing.
âSome of them are brighter than Frankâs shirts.â Mary mused, causing Steve to laugh harder.
They bid him goodnight, getting ready for bed before Fliss tucked Mary in and went to the spare room. She fell asleep not long after but was woken early Sunday morning with a desperate need to pee. Once sorted she text her phone to find a very drunk text from Frank, declaring he loved her and couldnât wait for Bean to arrive and for them to get married. She shook her head, glancing at the time, it was almost 4 am meaning it was 1am in Vegas. Smiling as she replied half asleep herself, telling him to maybe think about drinking water instead of any more alcohol, she turned over and closed her eyes.
***** Frank sat dumbfounded, his entire body rigid as the person next to him in the bed let out a sigh, and then a deep groan before a head emerged from under the covers.
âJesus fucking Christ!â Frank exhaled and let out a groan as Simon looked at him âWhat the fuck are you doing here?â
âWell, technically this is my room, jerk.â Simon said, blinking âWhat year is it?
âYou scared the shit out of me.â Frank took a deep breath âI thoughtâŚâ
âYou thought you left with the blonde?â Simon peeked up at him âNah, man. Mind you, wasnât for her lack of trying. She was all over you. Eventually you told her to fuck off. You were quite rude actually.â Frank let out a sigh, his head falling back against the head board.
Simon sighed turning over, before he peered under the covers. âFor the love of- Frank youâre naked.â âIâm aware of that.â Frank groaned.
âFucking hellâŚâ Simon grimaced, before he rolled out of bed âIâm going for a pee. Put some clothes on.â
Once Simon was in the bathroom he climbed out of bed, his head still spinning as he found his clothes in a pile on the floor. Shoving on his boxers and shirt he looked around the room to see an empty bottle of Jack Daniels and a pizza box on the table.
âWhere the hell did we go?â He asked Simon as he walked back into the room. âDonât ask me.â Simon looked at him, falling face down on the bed. âI know we took Greg back to your roomâŚâ
âWe did?â
âYeah he was wasted.â Simon nodded, rolling over as Frank flopped back on the bed. âHe could hardly walk so the bouncers asked us to take him out of the club. We threw him in your room thenâŚwe must have gone back outâŚhang onâŚâ
With a herculean effort, Simon pushed himself up and found his phone. After a brief scan his eyes widened and he snorted.
âLook.â
He turned the phone round to Frank, who saw a selfie of him and Simon in front of a face down Greg in the hotel room. Simon then began to flick through.
âOh, ok so we went to a liquor storeâŚâ he turned the phone round to show Frank a blurry photo of a shop front âDonât ask me why I took that and oh my god!â
âWhat?â Simon pressed play and a load of cheering and singing hit their ears as they watched footage of a small man dressed as a leprechaun dancing in the hotel foyer, Frank on his knees in front of him, laughing.
âI literally have no memory of thatâŚat all.â Frank shook his head.
âLooks like we called Bonnie as wellâŚâ Simon snorted âIf this angry text message that I got at 3 am is anything to go by.â
âOh fuck.â Frank hastily reached for his phone, which really didnât have a lot of battery left, and he hastily scanned his calls. There were none to Fliss, but he had sent her a message. According to her reply sheâd been up to use the toilet, so that was ok.
His phone illuminated then with two messages. One from Fliss asking him if he was hungover, as he deserved to be, and another from Greg asking him where the fuck he was. Deciding to reply to Greg first, as he could picture the man stressing he tapped out a quick reply informing him not to worry, heâd be back at the room as soon as heâd managed to dress himself, which at the moment thanks to his head was proving a little difficult, before he replied to Fliss saying he was indeed hungover and he needed to crawl into a hole and die and as ever, reminded her he loved her.
No sooner had he sent it, she was calling him.
âThat was quickâŚâ he mumbled, before answering it. âHey, honeyâŚâ âSo, wanna tell me exactly where and what you were doing that requires you to get dressed before you go back to your room?â Her voice was steely.
Shit. He had sent the messages to the wrong people.
âLissy, itâs not what you think.â He instantly began.
âOh, you have no IDEA what Iâm thinking!â her voice grew louder
âNo, listenâŚIâm with Simon.â He chuckled.
âYou think this is funny?â She sniffed and Frank grimaced.
âBaby, stop.â He sighed âLook, we ended up back at his room and I passed out here. That message was meant for Greg as he was asking me where I was. Instead he now has a message saying Iâm hungover to fuck and that I love him.â
She was silent and he could hear her on the other end of the line rustling something before she spoke again in a quiet voice âSo you werenât with anyone else?â
âNo, Sweetheart I wasnât. Why would I want to be huh? Most beautiful girl in the world waiting for me at home.â At that Simon let out a retching noise âGod you make me want to puke, Adler.â âOh fuck off Si you dick.â He shot back.
âHey, Fliss.â Simon leaned over to speak down the phone, grabbing Frankâs wrist to stop him moving it. âNow you, Bonnie and me have all seen Frank nekkid...â
âI swear to God Iâm gonna punch you in a minute.â Frank mumbled, jerking his arm out of Simonâs reach and pushing him so hard he rolled over and fell off the side of the bed. Frank let out a laugh as Simon groaned and a hand appeared in the air, flipping him off.
âHe knows about you and Bonnie?â
âApparently so.â Frank mused
âSo anything else you wanna tell me about what you got up to? Other than naked spooning Si?â
Frank laughed âWe found a dancing leprechaun.â
âA dancing leprechaun?â âYeah, in the hotel somewhere.â
âStandard.â she giggled âSo, are you ready to come home now youâve spent the last few days acting like overgrown frat boys?
âYes, Iâm more than ready to leave Aldrich Whitaker behindâ
âWho the fuck is that?â
âMy alter ego for last night. Heâs a trust fund ass hole.â Frank grinned.
There was a pause before she replied, snorting âWhatever.â
At that point his phone gave him a bleep to tell him he was dangerously low on battery power. âLook, baby, my phones gonna die. Iâll call you when I get it charged ok?â
âYeah, sure, hey Frankie, Iâm sorry I jumped to conclusions.â She apologised softly.
âItâs okay, Iâm not surprised after that message.â
âYeah but stillâŚâ she paused âCan I blame the hormones?â
âIf you want.â
âIn that case it was totally them.â
He chucked â Hormones or not, I love you.â
âLove you too sailorâ
With that his phone cut off and he glanced down at it, the screen blank as the power had gone. He dropped it on the bed, before leaning back again, his hand against his forehead.
âIâm NEVER coming to Vegas againâ
âOh you not fancy it for your Batchelor party then? Simon teased as he threw Frank a bottle of water from the mini bar.â
âThe fuck I do.â Frank shook his head.
*****
âIâd like to say Iâm surprised butâŚâ Bonnie shrugged as Fliss snorted, taking a drink of her apple juice from the carton as they walked back to their cars in the setting sun. Theyâd had dinner at one of the beach bars and stayed simply chatting for half an hour or so, but now Fliss was now ready to head home, shower and bunker down for the rest of the evening until Frank came home.
âI knew heâd end up paralytic.â Fliss said, watching as Mary wandered back towards them, huge ice cream in her hand. âStack thatâs bigger than your head.â
Mary shrugged, handing Fliss her change âItâs good though.â âMint choc chip?â
âYup.â she grinned, taking a huge lick. âWhenâs Frank back?â
âHe lands into Tampa in about 4 hours.â Fliss looked at her âWhy, you fed up of me already?â
âNo, just thinking how peaceful itâs been without him annoying me.â
Fliss grinned and Bonnie gave a chuckle.
âHey, did you tell Bonnie about you jumping Monty?â Fliss asked.
âOh, noâŚâ Mary turned to the woman, enthusiastically telling her all about it as Bonnie listened, Fliss walking alongside them, her hand rubbing her bump. She was just thinking about how nice a nap would be right then when Bonnieâs phone went.
âSorry Mary.â She muttered, frowning at the number. âHey, Lisa?â Fliss attention turned to Bonnie and she watched carefully as she spoke to Jakeâs fiancĂŠ, her eyes flicked to her âNo, no whyâŚwhatâsâŚoh, okâŚyeahâŚâ
She cancelled the phone call and instantly tapped at the screen.
âEverything ok?â Fliss frowned.
âYeah, I just need to check something.â she said. Fliss glanced at Mary who looked at her, shrugging.
âHereâŚâ Fliss handed her the keys to the jeep âGo open the carâŚâ âYou know if you want me out of the way just ask.â Mary rolled her eyes.
âOk I want you out of the way.â Fliss looked down at her. Mary snorted and took the keys, wandering off the 50 yards or so to the jeep. Fliss watched her climb in the back, the door staying open and her legs dangling out of the side. âBonnie what is it?â
âNothingâŚâ Bonnie said, far too quickly as she looked up at Fliss. Fliss frowned.
âBonnieâŚâ
âHonestly, itâs nothing, just something Lisa told me about on facebook soâŚâ Bonnie stuttered slightly so Fliss narrowed her eyes.
âStop bullshitting.â Fliss said, holding her gaze âWhat the fuckâs going on?â
âLook, Iâm sure itâs not what it seemsâŚâ Bonnie sighed, holding out her phone. At those words Fliss felt her heart sink as it could only mean one thing, and she took the phone with a tentative hand. She looked down at it and could see that it was a photo and from the logo in the bottom right hand corner it was from the official club page that the boys had been in on Saturday night.
It showed Jake, Greg, Simon, and a few others that Fliss didnât recognise but that wasnât what Bonnie had been referring to. What she had been talking about, as Fliss could clearly see was the background of the shot, which showed Frank with a blonde woman. Her arms were round his neck, his hand was resting on her lower back and their faces inches apart.
âLike I said, Iâm sure thereâs an innocent explanationâŚâ Bonnie said, but Fliss wasnât listening. She was busy flicking through the other photos and then she came across another of Frank, the same girl perched on his knee.
She felt sick.
âSure, perfectly innocentâŚâ Fliss swallowed, handing the phone back to Bonnie, her voice sounding detached. Bonnie looked down at the snap now displayed on the screen and she took a deep breath.
âLook, Fliss, Frank loves youhe was probably just drunk andâŚâ âTouching up some whore thatâs sat on his lap.â Fliss shook her head âSave it Bonnie, I gotta go.â âFlissâŚâ
Fliss turned away from her, the tears stinging her eyes as she headed to the jeep. Taking a deep breath she wiped her eyes, climbing into the driverâs seat.
âAre you ok?â Mary looked at her.
âYeah, fineâŚjust tired and hormonal.â Fliss shot her a smile.
âWe can watch a film when we get back.â Mary suggested âJust chill out?â
âYeah, yeah we can.â Fliss trying to quell the sick feeling in her stomach that had nothing to do with Bean.
Had Frank really cheated on her? She would never in a million years thought he had it in him to be unfaithful, and she was desperate to believe Bonnie, that there was some perfectly innocent explanation for it all. And maybe, just maybe with the first one she could. It could have been taken at a bad moment, when they were just talking to one another, Frank being friendlyâŚbut then again why would they have their arms round one another. And as for the second oneâŚthe same girl was sat on his fucking lap with her arm looped round his shoulder.
And he looked perfectly comfortable with it.Â
She rubbed her bump again and Mary looked at her. âAre you sure youâre ok?â
âYeah, Iâm fine sweetheart.â she nodded, painting a smile on her face before turning the key in the ignition. âLetâs go home.â
******
Frank sighed as they all trudged through the arrivals lounge, rubbing his eyes. He was ready for a shower and collapse next to his girl, he felt like he had aged a decade over the last 3 days. The rest of them looked just as bad as they headed to the waiting car, Simonâs phone reminding Frank he needed to turn his on to.
âOh, shitâŚâ he heard Simon groan âNo, thatâs notâŚhe didnâtâŚI swearâŚâ
He glanced at Frank who stood still, watching and leaning on the door frame, his own phone in his hand as it started up.
âYeah, okâŚlove youâŚsee you soon.â Simon swallowed and cut the call looking at Frank.
âWhat is it?â Frank looked at him, a cold feeling washing over him âHas something happened to Lissy or Mary? Or the baby, please tell me noâŚâ âNo, nothing like that but you need to call Fliss.â he said, âFrank, thereâs photos of you and that blonde chick on the club facebook page. Someone tagged me and Greg in them, Lisa saw them and Bonnie andâŚâ âPhotos of what?â Frank frowned âI didnât do anythingâŚâ âThereâs a photo that makes it look like you areâŚand one of her on your lap.â Simon said and Frank swallowed, his stomach churning.
âOh fahk!â
âJust get in the car.â Greg looked at him from where he stood at the other side. âCall her on the way, weâll back you upâŚitâs a misunderstanding.â
âYeah, itâll be fine.â Jake assured him.
But it wasnât fine, because no matter how much Frank tried, or how many messages he sent, Liss wasnât picking up or replying and when he saw the photos, he could understand her being pissed. He would be if it was the other way round because they looked bad. The drive home seemed to take forever, and when the car finally rounded the corner onto Frankâs road they all offered to come in as well and help him explain, but he shook his head, knowing full well if he did that she would feel backed into a corner. No, this was his own dumbass fault. Heâd face up to it and talk to her, make her understand how heâd told the girl to back offâŚsheâd listen, she was reasonable.
The house was quiet when he entered and he walked through to the lounge where Fliss was sat on the sofa, her knees bent up beside her. She glanced over the back of the couch and he could see she had been crying, which made him feel like even more of bastard than he did already.
âLissy, honey, I swearâŚâ âYou know, when I asked if there was anything you wanted to tell me, maybe I should have asked if there was something you should tell meâ She sniffed, uncurling her legs and standing up and Thorâs ears pricked up from where he had been laying on the rug.
âListen, those photos, theyâre notâŚâ He shook his head. âI told her to get lost, honestly I swear to you.â
He moved towards her, his hands dropping to her hips but she pushed him hard in the chest, stepping back.
âDonât touch me. I donât want you anywhere near me.â
âSweetheart, I swear to GodâŚâ
âI donât wanna hear it Frank.â she shook her head, walking past him. âWhere are you going?â he asked, âLissy, you canât leave. Please, sweetheartâŚâ âIâm going to bed, but letâs get one thing straight. The only reason Iâm not screaming at you right now and storming out, slamming the door behind me is because of Mary.â she spoke calmly, too calmly for the anger which was radiating out of every inch of her body. She looked at Frank, her eyes watering as she shook her head, turning away. âYou can take the couch.â
âLissyâŚâ âFrankâŚjust stop.â Her voice cracked, and with that she left the room, Thor trotting behind, the bedroom door clicking behind her.
Frank stood, rooted to the spot, debating whether or not to follow her, before he decided not to. The last thing he wanted was to anger her that much she stormed out, or worse, she got so stressed something happened to the baby. No, sheâd set the boundaries so he decided to respect them, and turned instead to the couch, sinking down onto the cushions his head in his hands.
She was angry, upset and she had the right to be and like he had said in the car, in her position he knew he would feel the same. She needed to sleep, calm down enough so that they could talk and he could explain, get her to listen to him. And then sheâd see that it was a huge misunderstanding, even if she remained pissed at him for having the girl so close in the first place, which, ok, he shouldnât have done but fuckâŚthe thought of cheating hadnât entered his mind, not once.
He swung his legs up, rubbing his face over his hands. Sheâd believe him. She had to, because if she didnât, then had no idea what the fuck he was gonna do.

Just when it seems like everythingâs evened out, and the balance seems serene, see the fool Iâll be, still running âround on the flesh rampage
âHey!â Fliss greeted Bonnie as she walked over to where the woman was supervising the after school club.
âHiya!â Bonnie smiled âYou heard from Frank today?â
âYeah, before.â Fliss smiled, before she looked and Bonnie âI gotta say, that video of SimonâŚâ
âHeâs an idiot.â Bonnie shook her head âPunching his own reflectionâŚI meanâŚâ
âIâm not gonna lie, itâs probably the funniest thing Iâve seen in ages.â Fliss giggled and Bonnie snorted, shaking her head again.
Simon then began to flick through.
âOh, ok so we went to a liquor storeâŚâ he turned the phone round to show Frank a blurry photo of a shop front âDonât ask me why I took that and oh my god!â
âWhat?â Simon pressed play and a load of cheering and singing hit their ears as they watched footage of a small man dressed as a leprechaun dancing in the hotel foyer, Frank on his knees in front of him, laughing.
âI literally have no memory of thatâŚat all.â Frank shook his head.
âLooks like we called Bonnie as wellâŚâ Simon snorted âIf this angry text message that I got at 3 am is anything to go by.â
âOh fuckâŚâ Frank hastily reached for his phone, which really didnât have a lot of battery left, and he hastily scanned his calls. There were none to Fliss, but he had sent her a message. According to her reply sheâd been up to use the toiletâŚso that was ok.
His phone illuminated then with 2 messages.
No sooner had he sent it, she was calling him.
âThat was quickâŚâ he mumbled, before answering it. âHey honeyâŚâ âSo, wanna tell me exactly where and what you were doing that requires you to get dressed before you go back to the room?â her voice was steely.
Shit. He had sent the messages to the wrong people.
âLissy, itâs not what you thinkâŚâ he instantly began.
âOh, you have no IDEA what Iâm thinking!â her voice grew louder
âNo, listenâŚIâm with SimonâŚâ he chuckled.
âYou think this is funny?â she sniffed and Frank grimaced.
âBaby, stop.â he sighed âLook, we ended up back at his room and I passed out here.
Most beautiful girl in the world waiting for me at home.â At that Simon let out a retching noise âGod you make me want to puke Adler.â âOh fuck off Si you dick.â he shot back.
âHey FlissâŚâ Simon leaned over to speak down the phone, grabbing Frankâs wrist to stop him moving it. âNow you, Bonnie and me have all seen Frank nekkid...â
âI swear to God Iâm gonna punch you in a minuteâŚâ Frank mumbled, jerking his arm out of Simonâs reach and pushing him so hard he rolled over and fell off the side of the bed. Frank let out a laugh as Simon groaned and a hand appeared in the air, flipping him off.
âHe knows about you and Bonnie?â
âApparently so.â Frank mused
Fliss snorted âSo anything else you wanna tell me about what you got up to? Other than naked spooning Si?â
Frank laughed âWe found a dancing leprechaun.â
âA dancing leprechaun?â âYeah, in the hotel somewhere.â
âStandard.â she giggled âSo, are you ready to come home now youâve spent the last few days acting like overgrown frat boys?
âYes, Iâm more than ready to leave Aldrich Whitaker behindâ
âWho the fuck is that?â
âMy alter ego for last night. Heâs a trust fund ass holeâŚâ Frank grinned.
There was a pause before she replied, snorting âWhatever.â
At that point his phone gave him a bleep to tell him he was dangerously low on battery power. âLook, baby, my phones gonna die. Iâll call you when I get it charged ok?â
âYeah, sure, hey FrankieâŚsorry I jumped to conclusions.â she said softly.
âItâs okâ he laughed âIâm not surprised after that message.â
âYeah but stillâŚâ she paused âCan I blame the hormones?â
âIf you want.â
âIn that case it was totally them.â
He chucked âOk. Anyway, hormones or not, I love you.â
âLove you too sailorâ
Theyâd had dinner at one of the beach bars and stayed simply chatting for half an hour or so, but now Fliss was now ready to head home, shower and bunker down for the rest of the evening until Frank came home.
âI knew heâd end up paralytic.â Fliss said, watching as Mary wandered back towards them, huge ice cream in her hand. âOk, Stack thatâs bigger than your head.â
She was just thinking about how nice a nap would be right then when Bonnieâs phone went.
âSorry MaryâŚâ she said, frowning at the number. âHey, Lisa?â Fliss attention turned to Bonnie and she watched carefully as she spoke to Jakeâs fiancĂŠ, her eyes flicked to her âNo, no whyâŚwhatâsâŚoh, okâŚyeahâŚâ
Bonnie looked down at the snap now displayed on the screen and she took a deep breath.
âLook, Fliss, Frank loves youâŚhe was probably just drunk andâŚâ âTouching up some whore thatâs sat on his lap.â Fliss shook her head âSave it Bonnie, I gotta go.â âFlissâŚâ
And he looked perfectly comfortable with it.
Someone tagged me and Greg in them, Lisa saw them and Bonnie andâŚâ âPhotos of what?â Frank frowned âI didnât do anythingâŚâ âThereâs a photo that makes it look like you areâŚand one of her on your lap.â Simon said and Frank swallowed, his stomach churning.
âOh fuckâŚâ
âJust get in the car.â Greg said, looking at him from where he stood at the other side. âCall her on the way, weâll back you upâŚitâs a misunderstandingâŚâ
âYeah, itâll be fineâŚâ Jake assured him.
But it wasnât fine, because no matter how much he tried, or how many messages he sent her, she wasnât picking up or replying and when he saw the photos, and had to admitâŚthey looked pretty bad, he could understand her being pissed. He would be if it was the other way round.
The house was quiet when he entered and he walked through to the lounge where Fliss was sat on the sofa, her knees bent up besides her. She glanced over the back of the couch and he could see she had been crying, which made him feel like even more of bastard than he did already.
âLissy, honey, I swearâŚâ âYou know, when I asked if there was anything you wanted to tell me, maybe I should have asked if there was something you should be telling meâ she said, uncurling her legs and standing up. Thorâs ears pricked up from where he had been laying on the rug.
âListen, those photosâŚtheyâre notâŚâ he shook his head âI told her to get lost, honestly I swearâŚâ
He moved towards her, his hands dropping to her hips but she pushed him hard in the chest, stepping back.
âDonât touch me...I donât want you anywhere near me.â she said quietly
âSweetheart, I swear to GodâŚâ
âI donât wanna hear it Frank.â she sniffed walking past him. âWhere are you going?â he asked, âLissy, you canât leaveâŚplease, sweetheartâŚâ âIâm going to bed, but letâs get one thing straight. The only reason Iâm not screaming at you right now and storming out, slamming the door behind me is because of Mary.â she spoke calmly, too calmly for the anger which was radiating out of every inch of her body. She looked at Frank, her eyes watering as she shook her head, turning away âYou can take the couch.â
âLissyâŚâ âFrankâŚjustâŚstop.â she said, her voice cracking, and with that she left the room, Thor trotting behind, the bedroom door clicking behind her.
She had to, because if she didnât, he had no idea what the fuck he was gonna do.

Chapter 1

Soulmate a/u
Characters:
-Â Â Â Angelina Cameron (O/C)
-Â Â Â Steve Rogers
-Â Â Â Marvel Characters (Tony, Natasha etc...)
Warnings: gore, very discriptive bloody scenes, maybe future smut, I would perfer if you were 18+ to read this
My cell door slammed against the wall loudly awaking me from my light sleep.
     âGet up,â Jake demanded.
I tried to get up as quickly as I could, but he had beat me everywhere on my body the day before. For him it was too slow because he came over and yanked me up by my hair. I yelled loudly as he walked me into the hallway.
âYou couldâve done it faster, but you didnât,â He sneered smiling darkly at me.
We kept walking over to the room where he normally experiments on me and he pushed me onto the table. He strapped my arms and legs down so I could move or fight back.
âYou know, if you hadnât tried to leave me all those years ago, we would probably be happily married with 2 adorable little kids and the white picket fence house in the suburbs, but you just had to run to your little Captain America,â He mocked. He says this almost every day right before he starts just to taunt me.
âI just wanted to know if he was my soulmate. Thatâs the only reason,â I quietly said to him.
âAnd if he had been your soulmate, you wouldâve left me for good!â He yelled in my face, âNow you canât leave because I own you.â
He stepped over to his table of tools, but he calls them toys, and picked up his favorite knife.
Walking back over to me he started swinging it around, âYou know Iâm actually really happy that your powers didnât come with fast healing cause now you have all of the scars to remember me by. You can never escape me Angelina.â
He slices the knife down my left forearm. I want to scream so badly but I hold it in because that just gives him the satisfaction. If I scream, he knows he has all the power. I always try my hardest not to scream everyday but eventually they slip out with him.
My eyes started turning blue the more he sliced my arm. When Iâm in pain, sad, scared or upset my water/ice powers come out. When Iâm angry fire comes out. For earth, itâs when I think of my favorite things or when Iâm happy. For air, its normally when Iâm just thinking around in my head.
Jake had moved down to my legs now. All I was wearing was a t-shirt and a pair of small shorts, almost like boxers. As soon as he had sliced my inner thigh, I screamed.
âThere we go. Iâve been waiting for that,â he smiled like a madman. He went to cut me again but then an alarm started going off, âWhat the hell is going on?!â he yelled at the two guards stationed at the door.
Both of the guards looked at each other looking very scared. Jake had become one of HYDRAâs best scientists, but he was also very feared in HYDRA. He was ruthless. He got what he wanted tearing anyone down if he had to. Right now, we were in one of the most hidden and secured HYDRA bases because if they lost him, theyâd lose all his work that he has done to help them.
âDo I always have to find out everything myself?â he set his knife down and made his way to the door, âMake sure she stays there. No body move her. Iâm not finished with her.â
As he started walking out o the door my vision got blurry. My vision kept going in and out. My throat felt like sandpaper.
âWater. I need water,â I mumbled to the guards.
They barely spared me a glance. I was losing a lot of blood from all the cuts on my body. In my mind I was thinking, this is it. This is when I die. Iâll be free of him.
My vision, still going in and out, caught sight of a bunch of guards running past the room.
Jake ran back into the room with a very pissed off look, âWell the almighty Avengers have came to take us down. But youâre coming with me.â
He moved to remove me from the table. Tears slipping down my face. As he finished undoing my legs a loud explosion very close went off.
He looked towards the door then back down at me, âI wonât be able to get you out in time,â He caressed the side of my face grabbing his knife again, âbut if they do take you, Iâll find you again and weâll be together forever.â
He stabbed my right shoulder and I screamed. He leaned down to kiss my forehead once I had finished screaming in pain, âI will see you again.â He ran out of the room turning the opposite corner that the explosion came from.
I looked up at bright light above me and waited. Waited for it to end. My eyes continued to open and close. My eyelids felt so heavy. I let them close thinking it was the end. The world around me going black and I smiled.
Goodbye Steve.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-3rd persons pov-
The Avenger had finally all gotten into the HYDRA base. They had taken down most of the soldiers now they were just picking off the rest of them. Natasha was working on downloading all of their files and intel.
Clint was on the roof of the building keeping an eye on outside.
Bruce was still in the quinjet incase they needed him for a code green, but it looked like they wouldnât need him for this mission.
Thor, Steve, and Bucky were all outside on the ground taking care of the rest of the HYDRA soldiers incase they tied to escape.
Sam was flying around looking for anyone who could escape from the three men outside.
Tony was checking the rest of the rooms to make sure no one was hiding or see if could find their weapons room to confiscate everything.
âGuys, I donât think this is where they hid weapons,â Natasha said through the comms.
âYeah I donât think so either. There way too many prison units in this building,â Tony commented back, âBut all of these cells are empty.
âWhat was this base for?â Clint said but he really only meant to ask himself that.
âIllegal human experimenting?â Steve asked Nat.
âYep, all the files are over their experiments but most of the people they did experiment on didnât survive,â Nat said reading through all the files being downloaded onto her flash drive.
âIâm checking all of the rooms right now for survivors. Iâll keep you guys updated if I find anything,â Tony said walking down a long hallway, both sides lined with empty cells.
At the end of the hallway he saw a door that was cracked open. It was different than the cell doors, so he guys either a weapons room or experiment room. He slowly opened the door with his hand blaster ready, but all he saw was a girl laying on the table.
He rushed over to her, âFRIDAY read vitals.â
âHeartbeat detected but she has lost a lot of blood. She needs immediate medical attention,â FRIDAY informed him.
âGuys, thereâs a girl here that needs medical help. Iâm going to fly her over to Bruce,â he undid the straps on her arms and picked her up in his metal arms.
âA girl? Who is she? Is she a HYDRA agent?â Steve asked.
âI highly doubt it. She looks like one of their experiments but sheâs losing a lot of blood,â he took off out of the building.
The girl stirred in his arms groaning in pain, âHey youâre alright. Iâm gonna help you.â
She barely opened her eyes looking at the metal man, âYouâre Mr. Stark.â
âI am Tony Stark, whatâs your name?â he said trying to keep her awake.
âMr. Stark please tell Captain Rogers--,â She trailed off losing consciousness. Tony looked at her confused about what she was going to say next. What does she want with Steve? He thought.
He flew faster then landed next to the quinjet, âBruce she needs your help now. Sheâs lost too much blood, but I didnât take the knife out cause she wouldâve died.â
Bruce immediately got to work and grabbed what he needed. Tony laid her on one of the cots they brought for if things like this happened. He stepped out of his Ironman suit and started to help Bruce.
Five minutes later the team had returned to the quinjet. Bruce had gotten the bleeding to stop but she would probably need surgery for the knife still in her arm.
âClint, I need you to get us home fast. Dr. Cho is going to be waiting for us when we get there because of this girl, But I need you to fly fast or she wonât make it,â Tony said quickly to Clint.
Clint nodded and made sure everyone was in so he could take off. Steve walked over to Tony to make sure he was okay but then he caught a glimpse of the girl. He couldnât take his eyes off of her, âWho is she?â
âShe didnât tell me her name, but she did try to tell me something,â Tonyâs brows came together in confusion trying to figure out what she was going to say.
âWhat did she say Tony?â Steve crossed his arms taking a couple glances at the girl.
âShe said and I quote âplease tell Captain Rogersâ but then she passed out and didnât finish,â He stared at the ground trying to figure it out, âDoes she have a name on her body? Maybe we can contact them.â
Everyone looked at Bruce, âItâs normally under the left collar bone but I didnât look because I was a little preoccupied.â
Everyone still stared at him. He was looking down at the girl but when he looked up, he saw everyone looking at him expectantly, âIâm not gonna look. Thatâs an invasion of privacy,â He threw his hands up.
âYou all are such big babies,â Natasha rolled her eyes and walked over to the girl. She slowly pulled down her shirt and Tony walked over to also see.
Both of their eyes went wide looking at the name written under her collar bone. They turned towards each other gulping.
âUmm Cap,â Nat looked back to him, âYouâre going to want to see this.â
Steve gulped, very nervous, he walked over to the girl. Natasha was still holding her shirt down so you could see the name. He looked at the cursive name under her collar bone and his eyes went wide.
His name sat upon her skin.
Steven Grant Rogers
His knees felt like jelly. He kept starring at the marks on her skin, âHow is this possible? I thought I wouldâve had a soulmate back in the 40âs I just never had the chance to meet her. Not a soulmate from this century.â
âI mean itâs not impossible. You got a second chance at life and somehow you guys are together now. I guess everything does happen for a reason,â Sam clapped his shoulder.
Steve could barely process it. He had thought he lost his chance to have a soulmate, but she was laying in front of him. He sat down next to her bed and took her hand carefully, âHow much longer till we get to the compound?â
âAbout 5 minutes Cap,â Clint yelled back to him.
He swore, in that moment, that he couldnât lose her. He finally had her. His true soulmate.

Gifâs not mine!
You filled yourself some coffee from Tonyâs coffee machine, trying to wake up. The last couple of days had been tough, especially after your talk with Bucky. So far, Trent had been silent and you couldnât decide whether that was a good thing or a bad thing but one thing was for sure, it meant he was planning something.
HYDRA was planning something.
âYou canât ask me that.â Bucky shook his head, âYou- Y/N, you donât even-â
âBucky, if HYDRA uses me,â You cut him off, âOr if they get to⌠if they get to something that I know, the world will be a very different place. Not in a good way.â
Bucky shook his head fervently, âThere will be a solution.â
âYou of all people know how bad they get.â
âDoesnât matter. I wonât do that to you, or Steve,â he paused, âOr myself.â
You were pulled out of your thoughts when you felt a pair of arms sneaking around your waist and Steveâs cologne filled your nostrils, making you smile almost automatically and lean back to his chest.
âHey there.â
âHey.â Steve pressed a kiss on the top of your head, âPenny for your thoughts?â
You turned around with the cup in your hands, looking up at him. He still looked sleepy, considering almost all of you were staying at the Tower for a couple of days just in case an emergency happened, not that you were complaining.
Especially with moments like these.
âOh nothing,â You shrugged, âI was just trying to make a mental list, I have a lot to do today.â
âLike what?â
âI gotta meet Jake,â You shrugged, âHe said he wanted to see me and for some reason, he couldnât tell me on the phone.â
Steve frowned, âWhy not?â
âWouldnât know. Then I gotta come back and do more research on Trent, maybe something escaped our notice-â
âYouâve barely slept for the last two days.â
âRuining Trent is more important.â
âNo, it really isnât.â Steve said, his eyes intense on you, âCan I come with you?â
âTo Jake?â
âYeah.â
You scoffed, âSure but why?â
Steve shrugged, âJust in case,â he said, âWe donât know how far HYDRA goes.â
âIâm pretty sure HYDRA doesnât employ bartenders, capcake.â You grinned, âItâs cute though, this whole thing.â
âWhat whole thing?â
âSecret jealousy thing.â You motioned at him and he had the audacity to look confused.
âIâm not jealous.â
âThreatened?â
âNo.â
âSensitive?â
âSensitive?!â
âWhoâs sensitive?â Bucky asked, as soon as he walked in, âOr do I want to know?â
You leaned sideways to look at Bucky around Steveâs arm, âIâm meeting Jake and Steve is being weird about it.â
âIâm not being weird-â
âJake, the bartender who you used to hook up with?â
âOnce!â You pointed out, âJust once and it wasnât even that good, so no reason to feel threatened.â
âI donât feel threatened,â Steve announced, âJust in case anyone is listening to what Iâm saying here.â
âWe always listen to what you say, Stevie.â
âYeah capcake, youâre the boss.â You winked at him and Tony walked in,
âPlease tell me you didnât finish all the coffee.â
You heaved a sigh, and walked towards the counter, âYouâre a fucking billionaire Tony, why donât you have two machines?â
Tony grinned and stole a look at Steve, âLanguage.â
Steve shook his head, âThat will never go away, will it?â
âNot really.â You yawned, âIâm leaving in half an hour, meet you here?â
Steve nodded and you walked past them, then made your way to your room.
                    *
âYou know,â Jake said as he sat down across from you, âThe whole point of having a cellphone is to be able to reach people.â He turned to Steve and nodded at him, respectfully. âCaptain Rogers.â
âHi Jake.â Steve greeted him and you shook your head slightly.
âIâve been busy.â
âI could tell,â he motioned between you two, âSo⌠Should I say congratulations?â
âOr curse my whole existence because you also wanted to hook up with him.â
Jake thought for a second, âOh yeah, let me know if you ever need to spice it up.â
âYou canât handle one person, let alone two people.â
Jake clutched at his chest while Steve gawked at you two, âMy emotions.â
âOh wow, you still have those?â
Jakeâs lips turned upwards, âListen, two men came in the other day.â
âTMI, Jake-â
âAsking about you,â he cut you off, âThey had suits on, and looked very⌠sort of like an army?â
Steve sat up straighter, âAn army?â
âYeah like one of those- private army types.â
Your heart skipped a beat, âCan you describe their faces?â
âI can show you their faces,â Jake reached into his pocket âI took their photos pretending to text.â
You raised your brows and took the phone from him, and your stomach flipped. Even if itâs been years since you had last seen them, you could still recognize Trentâs bodyguards âwhich you had commented werenât necessary, but Trent had said you could never be too careful.
âYou know them?â Steve asked and you hesitated only for a second before you shook your head.
âNo,â you lied through your teeth, âNo idea.â
Knowing Steve, the minute he found out you knew them, heâd want to track them down and-
There was no way youâd ever let him put himself in harmâs way.
Put himself in Trentâs way.
âWhat did they ask?â Steve turned to Jake, who thought for a second.
âWhether I knew her or not, and if she- if she hangs around here a lot.â
Of course Trent would put a tail on you. Of fucking course.
âWhat did you say?â you asked and Jake shrugged,
âI said I never heard from you after that one night stand.â
Steve shifted in his seat beside you and Jake cleared his throat.
âI figured they already knew, so I had to make it sound convincing.â
âYeah.â You nodded and ran a hand over your face, âSorry about that man, I never wanted to drag you into this.â
âOh Iâve been through worse.â
âNo, you really havenât.â You said silently as Steve reached out to entwine his fingers with yours, as if trying to assure you everything was fine. Jake averted his eyes and turned to you,
âWhat do you want me to do if they come back, Y/N?â
âStay somewhere crowded,â You said, âMake sure people see youâre talking to them. And call me.â
He nodded, and stood up, âIâd better get back to work.â He said, âCaptain.â
âJake.â
With that, Jake walked away and you ran your fingernails on the smooth surface of the table.
âTrent?â
âHYDRA,â you said, and shook your head, âSame thing.â
âHey,â Steve said, gently tilting your head up âCome on. We already knew he would try something like this.â
âWe didnât know heâd have me followed.â
Steve gave you a small, assuring smile, âI meant what I said, Y/N. No matter what he does, he will never get to you.â
You tried to blink the tears back, âI need a drink,â you said silently, then pulled back, âAnd a smoke.â
âY/NâŚâ
âThen we gotta go back to the Tower and never speak of it again.â
                      *
But you couldnât go to the Tower that afternoon. Fury had texted Steve, saying that all the Avengers were called into another meeting at SHIELD, so you figured youâd get some of your equipment from your desk to move them to Avengers Tower. In addition to that, rookie agents still managed to look pretty star-struck by Captain America, and some of them even came up to talk to him while you were grabbing stuff from your desk, while Bucky, Natasha and others waited at Furyâs office.
âY/N!â Eddie, another agent approached you and handed you a file, âYou need to go through this one.â
You frowned, âFury was supposed to sign them already.â
âYeah, Fury was busy with Alexander Pierce, head of the Council, and Pierce is seeing Wilson Fisk, so Fury said youâre supposed to-â
âWhat?â You interrupted him, the name having the same affect on you as an ice cold shower, âWilson Fisk?â
âYeah, heâs supposed to be this big shot, huge businessman.â He handed you the file, âJust get it back to me before you leave, alright?â
You could feel your heartbeat getting faster as Steve got rid of agents asking him questions, then approached you.
âYouâre done?â
âHYDRA is here.â You managed to say, through frozen lips.
Steveâs brows pulled into a frown, âWhat?â
âCome- just come with me.â You said as you walked out of the office, then made your way to Furyâs office and opened the door without knocking, taking everyone by surprise.
âYou let him bring the HYDRA here?â you asked Fury, ignoring Bucky, Tony and Natashaâs glances and Fury raised his brows,
âWhat?â
âWilson Fisk is here right now?â
A look of realization crossed Furyâs face, âPierce says thereâs no actual evidence. The whole Council thinks that.â
âPierce is wrong, so is the whole Council.â You tried to keep your calm, but the whole day was taking its toll on you. The anger and fear you had tried your hardest to suppress was boiling in the pit of your stomach and Steve crossed his arms.
âThereâs a HYDRA agent in here?â
âNot an agent. Money donor.â
âThe whole room is under surveillance, Captain. And Iâm baiting him-â
âHeâs one of the biggest names doing business with-â You turned to Steve, âCan you hold him down while I punch his lights out?â
âSteve-â
âYeah, where is he now?â
âJesus Christ, thereâs two of them now,â Bucky shook his head as Fury interfered,
âIf we can get his trust, he might lead us back to HYDRA. And Von Struckers. I donât give a fuck what the Council says, he canât be trusted and if we track him and his finances downâŚâ
âDoes Pierce know about that plan then?â Tony asked and Natasha scoffed.
âThat man doesnât know shit.â
Fisk.
He was one of the most important businessmen that did business with Trent, and by extension, HYDRA. While you could find no record of him actively working in it, he still gave them money. You had even met him multiple times when you were still with Trent, and he had always given you creeps. It was as if even back then, you had known something was wrong with him, and his whole attitude.
Just remembering it made you feel like someone had knocked your breath out of your chest and you ran a hand over your face, then left Furyâs room to get to the nearest balcony, Steve darting after you. You walked to the edge of the balcony to hold onto the steel rails and closed your eyes, taking a deep breath.
âFuck this shitâŚâ You muttered as Steve squeezed your shoulder, pulling you closer to him and pressed a kiss to the top of your head, making you heave a sigh, tension on your body getting less and less with his touch.
âFury has a point.â he muttered into your hair, and you pulled back to look up at him. âWe will get Fisk too, we just- we need to get to Von Struckers first.â
âBoth of them are extremely careful, Steve.â You said, âThatâs not how it works.â
âWe will take them down, doll. One by one.â
You opened your mouth, but were distracted when someone opened the door to balcony and all your blood ran cold.
Fisk took a step inside the balcony, then smiled at you.
âY/N.â he turned to Steve, âHello, Captain.â
If looks could kill, you were sure Fisk would drop dead by now because of Steveâs glare on him.
âWilson Fisk, I presume?â
âItâs an honor,â he had the audacity to say, âYou werenât around when I got here, Y/N. I was wondering where you were.â
Jesus Christ, you really needed a huge bottle of whiskey right now.
âYou should go.â Steve offered, but his voice was anything but polite. âNow.â
âI got it, itâs fine,â You muttered to Steve, and crossed your arms, âWhy were you looking for me, asshole?â
Fisk shrugged, âTo give my condolences, about yourâŚâ he clicked his tongue, âDivorce? Or do you call it a break?â
âIâll break your whole face if you keep talking.â
He looked around, âYou know you donât have to work in SHIELD, right? If youâre doing freelance, we could make use of you in my company.â
You raised your brows, âMe?â
âYeah.â
âGo fuck yourself.â
Fisk looked almost taken aback for a second before he turned to Steve, âCaptain-â
âWhat my girlfriend said.â Steveâs voice was like a whip and Fisk nodded slowly, then reached inside his jacket, making Steve push you behind him almost automatically. Fisk paused and raised his hand, mocking surrender.
âIâm just a businessman, Mr. Rogers.â
âYeah and Hannibal Lecter was just a doctor.â You said, as he pulled out a small box with a ribbon on it.
âOur mutual friend sent you this.â He held it out but when neither you, nor Steve moved, he put it down to the floor, âItâs nice to see you again, Y/N.â
With that, he walked away and you grabbed the box, then lifted the lid slightly just enough to peek inside.
âWhat is it?â
You closed the lid, and heaved a sigh.
âA flash drive.â You said, âCome on. We canât check it here, itâs not safe.â
âTower?â
âYeah,â You nibbled on your lip, âTower.â
                   *
Tony gave you a disposable, old laptop as soon as you got to the Tower. While you were sure that there was no way Trent or anyone who worked for him could come up with a virus that would go undetected by your systems, like Tony had said, it was better to be safe.
âItâs like twelve days of Christmas, but an evil version,â Tony commented as you switched the laptop on. Bucky and Steve were talking in low voices at the corner of the room, and Natasha was by your side, eyeing the flash drive.
âYouâre sure itâs safe?â
âIâll get rid of the laptop as soon as we see whatâs inside.â You nodded, âYeah, it should be safe.â
âAnd there are no files in it.â
âThat too.â You opened the box, and a paper stuck on the lid that you had missed before dropped to your lap. You opened the folded paper, the simple writing making you frown.
Donât do what she told you to do, or else you will regret it.
âYou ready?â Tony asked as he plugged the flash drive in and you nodded, then he clicked on the clip after Steve and Bucky approached you.
There was a man strapped to a chair while three other men surrounded him and when the vision got clearer you held your breath, jumping on your feet.
It was Bucky. Strapped to the chair.
HYDRA days.
One of the men pushed a button, making Buckyâs whole body spasm and you slammed the laptop lid shut, your heart beating in your throat.
âBucky, Iâm so sorry-â You turned to him while he stared at the laptop, then tried to pull himself together.
âWhere did he get that footage?â he asked in a whisper and you shook your head, trying to make sense of-
You looked down at the paper, then your eyes snapped up at Bucky, your brain working nonstop.
Donât do what she told you to do.
The thought hit you like a ton of bricks and Tony opened his mouth but you put your index finger on your lips, signaling him to be silent, then turned the paper over and grabbed a pen, then held up the paper after you finished writing.
Tower is bugged. No one say anything.
There was a moment of silence, all of you staring at each other before Tony heaved a sigh.
âOh fuck.â
Chapter 15 is here!Â

Well here is a special lady who really requires no introduction (but Iâm going to anyway as this is how these things work.) I only have the fabulous Noelle Holten aka Crimebookjunkie stopping by to share all of her book love confessions. Now for the off few of you who donât already know Noelle, hereâs a little bit more about her.
About Noelle
My name is Noelle and I am in my mid-40âs. I am an avid reader and by that I mean I am never without a book! By day I am PR & Social Media Manager for Bookouture, and by night I read all things crime!! My fascination for books started at a young age and I truly feel withdrawal symptoms if I am unable to read for a few days hence the name #crimebookjunkie! I am interested in many genres, my faves being Grit Lit, psychological thrillers and all things murder. I do enjoy Police Procedurals and legal/action thrillers as well. I tend to keep away from Chick Lit and EroticaâŚhowever, if forced at gun point I may give just about anything a readâŚexcept Erotica! I would rather dieâŚ..
You can follow Noelle at the following links:
Twitter | Facebook | Website
Childhood Sweetheart Favourite book from childhood
My favourite book from childhood has to be The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. I loved the idea of finding a secret world through a wardrobe and all the adventures the children found themselves in.
First love The first book you fell in love with
This is a tough one. I think Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier â I was probably one of the few students who actually enjoyed reading this as it didnât feel like homework.
Biggest book crush The book character youâre totally in love with
No! No! No! â I cannot choose just one. I am a bit of a #BookBoyFriendWhore and have fallen in love with so many â John Cooper from Paul Grzegorzekâs But For The Grace of God, Mark Baines from Stephen Edgerâs series of the same name, Jake Boulder from Graham Smithâs Watching The Bodies â and Iâm also partial to DI Harry Evans in Mr Smithâs other seriesâŚ.but we wonât tell them! Kenny OâNeill in Michael J Maloneâs books, Davie McCall in Douglas Skeltonâs booksâŚWashington Poe from Mike Cravenâs yet to be released seriesâŚ. Eddie Flynn from Steve Cavanaghâs booksâŚLennox from Craig Russellâs seriesâŚ..seeâŚ.I am so bad! You have to stop me!
Weirdest book crush Well⌠duh
Do I have to say? HmmmâŚI guess it would have to be Marcie Steeleâs (Mel Sherratt) Thatâs What Friends Are ForâŚ.I knowâŚa totally feel good GIRLY book! WTAF? But if you tell anyone, I just may have to kill youâŚ.
Hardest break up The book you didnât want to end
But For The Grace of God by Paul Grzegorzek â I LOVE this book and I am still waiting for the next oneâŚ.I NEED John Cooper back in my life!
The one that got away The book in your TBR or wish list that you regret not having started yet.
There are SO many! I am desperate to read Rattle by Fiona Cummings. I have heard great things and it is sitting ever so patiently, waiting for me â I hope to get to it soon.
Secret love Guilty Reading pleasure
I absolutely adore the Bridget Jonesâ series by Helen Fielding and I am not ashamed to say that at all! I think everyone at some point in their lives can relate to Bridget and the books always make me laugh!
Love one, love them all Favourite series or genre
ErmâŚ.think that might be obvious but just in case it is not clearâŚ.I am a total nut when it comes to crime fiction! That includes action, psychological, legal, medical, serial killer âŚany sort of thriller in crime where there is a body and a case to be solved! BRING IT ON!
Your latest squeeze Favourite read of the last 12 months
I totally LOVED the #BookBeast that is Stuart MacBrides A Dark So Deadly. What a fantastic read!
Blind date for a friend If you were to set a friend up with a blind date (book) which one would it be?
Seriously? Oh manâŚ.there are again so many! I think I would have to say Angela Marsonsâ DI Kim Stone series â it is phenomenal! They could not just read oneâŚ.they would have to read the whole series.
Greatest love of all Favourite book of all time.
Fydor Dostoevskyâs Crime and Punishment is my favourite book of all time. I canât explain why other than to say that it draws on the anguish experienced when faced with a moral dilemma and how one justifies their behaviour while also showing that anyone is capable of murderâŚ.Mwah ha ha ha!
âŚ
Thanks Noelle. A brilliant list (as expected). You know I never knew you were so into crime books ⌠;). Have to agree about A Dark So Deadly. Wasnât it fabulous? And you are not a book boyfriend whore. Itâs perfectly normal to have at least three, four, five or six concurrent book crushes. Perfectly normal! (I feel better about my three confessions noe lol). If you still havenât read Rattle yet then you must. Itâs sublime.
So folks. On the off chance there are still some crime books she hasn;t yet read, any suggestions for Noelle. Or any crime related erotica you think might finally drag her over to the dark side đ (Totally kidding â no suggestions required â ever!!!)
Join me next week when Mike Sahno and CJ Harter will be sharing more of the old #booklove.
Have a fabulous day all
JL
