Universal language
If somebody would ask me with what verb I associate art as an activity, I would never say 'to draw' or 'to paint'. It is so clear to me that the most suitable word is 'to connect'. First of all, art for me is a bridge. This bridge is aimed to bond or even translate to the universal language concepts, phenomena, minds. It is even capable of expressing scientific records. I was truly amazed by this.
While I was getting to know the work of Janet Echelman further, I found '1.26'. This is what she tells about it:
‘...Next challenge, the Biennial of the Americas in Denver asked, could I represent the 35 nations of the Western hemisphere and their interconnectedness in a sculpture? (Laughter) I didn't know where to begin, but I said yes. I read about the recent earthquake in Chile and the tsunami that rippled across the entire Pacific Ocean.
Tumblr media
It shifted the Earth's tectonic plates, sped up the planet's rotation and literally shortened the length of the day. So I contacted NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and I asked if they'd share their data on the tsunami, and translated it into this. Its title: "1.26" refers to the number of microseconds that the Earth's day was shortened.’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The so-called bridge was established. The pure interaction of science and art. Universal language in action.

Netting Inspiration
Here is a sampling of some contemporary artists using netted structure in their work.
Images from top:
New Craft Artists in Action or NCAA is an international artist collective based in Boston. They work to “integrate the skills, materials, and histories of many intersecting disciplines: athletics, craft, public space, aesthetics, labor, recreation, and feminism.”
Benjamin Cook created a series of painted and resined nets like this one as part of his contemporary painting practice.
This is a wall based installation of smaller structures incorporating nets by Amy Hamblin.
“As If It Were Already Here” a public art project in Boston from 2015 by Janet Echelman
Netted sculpture by Rebecca Medel
“14 Billions” a 2010 installation by Thomas Saraceno
netted installation by Chiharu Shiota
a work by Los Angeles based artist Meghann McCrory from an exhibition called “Meshwork” at Elephant Art Space.

Taking imagination seriously
I`m wondering, how does it feel when your artwork becomes a part of a city's everyday life? I mean these permanent installations on the street. The works that invite passing by people to admire or more - engage. I remember how much joy is causing every new public installation. They have an amazing ability to bring new colours to the urban landscape.
Listening to the TED Talks, I came across a new artist for me whose work is an incredible example.
Tumblr media
Small piece about Pulse project from Janet Echelman`s website:
‘“Pulse" traces in the surface of the fountain the paths of the subway and trolley lines that converge under Dilworth Park (Philadelphia). As trains pass beneath, four-foot-tall curtains of colourful atomized mist travel across the park fountain’s surface following the transit lines. “Pulse” utilizes a high-pressure misting system of specialized pumps that create an ultra-fine, fog-like, cool mist that quickly evaporates. The ephemeral mist is made of filtered, softened water onto which lighting is projected. Described by the artist as “a living X-ray of the city’s circulatory system,” the vibrantly coloured mist curtains move across the fountain and mirror the footprint of the trains below, evoking the steam rising from the city’s first water pumping station.’
Tumblr media
It is so mesmerizing. When an artwork is a wonderful fusion of technology, effort, science, passion and is aimed to spread joy - this is how an ideal art looks like for me now.

. . . #janetechelman #remediosvicent #ayuntamientodemadrid #streetart #arteurbano #art (en Plaza Mayor City Central)
