EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a really cool project that just got greenlit at DC Studios and Warner Bros Pictures Animation: Dynamic Duo. It will mark the first joint project between DC Studios and the Bill Damaschke-led WBPA. The 6th & Idaho movie scripted by Matthew Aldrich is being made by a new animation studio out of New Orleans named Swaybox and that studio’s husband-and-wife creators Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson. Mintz will direct this movie, which follows the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd aka the Robins.

ooh this is perfect! i can tell you all about revolutionary harmonica players!! i will give neil a little credit since he introduced me and im sure many other harmonicists to the instrument, but i assure you there are SO many better players out there
definitely gotta check out deford bailey (pronounced dee-ford). he was a master at and greatly popularized the train imitation and fox chase styles (<this video has flickering for some reason just fyi) and is largely responsible for country harmonica, being a founding member of the grand ol opry
little walter is obviously a must. his approach to the instrument, melodic, dirty and presice, set the standard for chicago blues playing. while he probably wasn't the first to do it, he certainly popularized the use of a microphone while playing which helped the harmonica stay relevant in the age of electric instruments and added a unique distorted tone
sonny terry is also blues, but a very different style. he used a lot of chordal rhythms for accompaniment and really was the first person to play anything like what he did, it's kinda hard to explain
all three of those guys influenced charlie mccoy, one of the most recorded session musicians in history and sort of the pioneer of country and bluegrass harmonica.
there's a direct lineage from mccoy to one of my personal favourite players, jason ricci (solo @1:48), whose mentor pat ramsey (solo @1:50) applied super-fast bluegrass style licks to blues. jason took it a step further, delving into punk, hard rock and funk with an extremely idiosyncratic style. (i had a hard time choosing which song to link but i think this one is a succinct, flashy example of an iconic era of his career. more are in the playlist!)
jason's style also makes heavy use of a technique called overbending, which is probably the most common way to play chromatic notes on a diatonic harmonica. typically, a harmonica is tuned to have only the notes of one major scale, which is why most players have different harmonicas in different keys. but it is possible to play some notes between the scale degrees by bending, which was pioneered by black american musicians before being widely recording, but there are still some notes that can't be played bent
that's where howard levy (solo @1:50 but you should watch the whole thing 😳) comes in (probably my favourite harmonica player ever). he was a jazz piano player before picking up harmonica and decided to start practicing scales on harp the same way he did piano. of course, not all the notes were there, but somehow in trying to bend a note that didn't bend he got a different sound. he ended up becoming the first person to really master this technique, finally bringing the diatonic harmonica into jazz and other more complex music.
last major suggestion, brendan power. his early influences include sonny terry and charlie mccoy but his style has become defined by his harmonica inventions. after learning that charlie mccoy tuned his harmonicas differently (there's a really cool story about how he started doing that) brendan set out to create the ultimate diatonic tuning, since standard tuning wasn't intended to be used in any of the stuff it's used in now, it just happens to work pretty well. but what if it worked PERFECTLY for whatever style you were playing? his most famous tunings include paddy richter (for irish music) powerdraw (for more ease of playing blues) and powerbender (my personal favourite that's great for everything from jazz to hard rock). he also invented half-valving, which i won't get into but basically gives you the ability to bend all notes in different ways, which works on diatonic and chromatic harmonicas. his work has really bridged the gap between the two instruments. he's also created double decker harmonicas, modular reed harmonicas, switchable octave harmonicas, extended range harmonicas and all sorts of harmonicas with extended expressiveness in about a hundred different ways. his playing is also exceptional. he's a very diverse but recognizable player capable of fitting in just about anywhere but you're always sure it's him when you hear that distinctive sound
so those are the main harmonica players id suggest. if you're looking for more id recommend will wilde (hard rock/metal player who uses his own tuning and WILL BLOW YOUR MIND), todd parrott (incredible bluegrass player who takes advantage of modern harmonica techniques in a traditional setting), carlos del junco (a blues/jazz/roots player with a very unique, technical style), jimmy reed (blues singer with a highly influential harmonica sound), joel andersson (innovative european folk player who uses many novel harmonica designs and is also a fantastic harmonica technician), p.t. gazell (western swing and jazz player who uses half-valved diatonics to get chromatic notes instead of overbends) and konstantin reinfeld (he really plays everything, from jazz to classical to hip hop to tango to bollywood music. all on diatonic harmonica)
here's a playlist with all the songs i linked and more! i hope other people will see this post too if there's one thing i can't stand it's harmonica ignorance
Like any person of culture, tonight I sought out a list of musical artists who revolutionized the usage of the humble harmonica. The list I found involved Neil Young's Heart of Gold.
Needless to say, I entered a berserker state.
#im sorry this is so long i get excited when people are interested in harmonica#harmonica#neil young#deford bailey#little walter#sonny terry#charlie mccoy#jason ricci#pat ramsey#howard levy#brendan power#will wilde#todd parrott#carlos del junco#jimmy reed#joel andersson#p.t. gazell#konstantin reinfeld

Nytt år, nya filmer. Eller ja... Kanske snarare nygamla... En bra månad om jag får säga så själv.
Captain America (1979) [] Mina anteckningar under filmer: Beige, Orange Jacka, David Hasselhoff-lookalike och Roger Moore-aktig skurk.
Giants of Thessaly, the / I giganti della Tessaglia (1960) [👍🆓] Kul egen take på Jason and the Argonauts-mytoset.
Jason and the Argonauts / Det Gyllene Skinnet (1963) [👍🔁]
Robin Hood: Äventyrens man / Robin and Marian (1976) [👍🆓] Sean Connery™, Audrey Hepburn™, Robert Shaw (Quint i Hajen), Richard Harris™, Ian Holm™ och Bill Maynard (Greengrass i Aidensfield ). Vilken jäkla cast va! Rena gottpåsen en helt vanlig måndagskväll.
Robin Hoods Hämnd / Prince of Thieves, the (1948) [🆓]
Rollerball (1975) [🔁]
Sinbad och Tigerns Öga / Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) [👍🔁🆓]
Sinbads Fantastiska Resa / Golden Voyage of Sinbad, the (1973) [👍🔁🆓]
Spy Hard (1996) [👎🔁] Nä. Ibland skall man verkligen lite på sin egen betygsättning, speciellt när man inte minns något av filmen i övrigt. Weird-Al Yancovich känns dock gjuten i ledmotivet.

"THE MOST VICIOUS OF ALL": HEAVY 30th TO THE "WOLVERINE BLUES" LP -- UNLEASHED ON THIS DAY!
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the 30th anniversary of the "Wolverine Blues" LP, the third studio album by Swedish death metal band ENTOMBED, released on 4 October 1993 by Earache Records. The album displays a completely different sound from previous releases, combining elements of hard rock, heavy metal, and hardcore punk in a style later dubbed "death 'n' roll" or "rot 'n'roll."
"ALBUM OVERVIEW: "ENTOMBED, one of the premier death metal bands of the early '90s, boldly ventured into new musical territory with "Wolverine Blues," the band's third excellent album in a row. "Wolverine Blues" is such a departure from past efforts, in fact, it's debatable whether this music even qualifies as death metal, given its standard rock characteristics: comprehensible vocals, steady tempos, and verse-chorus-verse songwriting.
None of these characteristics is associated with death metal, and indeed, purists might perceive Entombed's development on "Wolverine Blues" as an abandonment of the very principles that won the band such underground acclaim in the first place. Some purists might even go so far as to consider the album a sellout. Most reasonable listeners, however -- including even the most impassioned death metal purists -- will likely find much to appreciate on "Wolverine Blues."
It's that impressive. For sure, Entombed's previous albums, "Left Hand Path" (1990) and "Clandestine" (1991), were excellent, among the finest death metal efforts of their time, but their stylistic trappings were well evident. The growled vocals, breakneck tempo shifts, and amorphous song structures, to cite a few key characteristics, were fairly inaccessible to the type of mainstream metal listener who would consider METALLICA or PANTERA extreme.
"Wolverine Blues," on the other hand, is that rare album brutal enough for the death metal crowd yet at the same time accessible enough for the metal mainstream. For instance, the vocals of Lars-Göran Petrov are mostly comprehensible; however, they're delivered with such ferocity, they're as powerful as, if not more so than, the most guttural death-growl.
Likewise, the guitars of Uffe Cederlund and Alex Hellid riff along at a steady tempo, but they're so heavy, they cut like a buzzsaw (as on "Heavens Die") and pummel away like a jackhammer ("Demon"). Along with the drumming of Nicke Andersson, which is hard-hitting yet never to the point of blastbeat, it's the songwriting of "Wolverine Blues" that is most removed from the confines of death metal.
These are especially distinctive songs by ENTOMBED, every single one each unique in its own way and graced with a memorable hook, particularly the album standouts "Wolverine Blues," "Hollowman," and "Out of Hand." Clearly, a lot can be made of ENTOMBED's bold venture into new musical territory with "Wolverine Blues," and you can bet metalheads will debate the album's stylistic merits for years to come.
What's beyond argument, though, is that "Wolverine Blues" is the third impressive effort in a row by one of the best metal bands of the early '90s, and as impressive as the past two albums were, this one is by far the most inviting and most deserving of widespread recognition."

“Look Down” and “The Robbery,” London, 2000. Jason McCann as Enjolras, Nilkas Andersson as Marius, Barry James as Thénardier, Mandy Holliday as Mme. Thénardier, Joanna Ampil as Éponine, Simon Bowman as Jean Valjean, Zoë Curlett as Cosette, Paul F. Monoghan as Javert, unknown Gavroche.
Since the upper part of the stage is blocked from view, we can’t see Enjolras or Marius during their lines from the bridge in “Look Down.” Still, as a whole, the scene comes across just fine.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen another “Look Down” where the beggars and paupers treated each other so brutally. Not only do the old beggar woman and young prostitute have their fight, but a gang of urchins harass the old woman and try to steal her belongings the whole while, and then the pimp slaps the prostitute to the ground even though she didn’t start the conflict. And then we have Gavroche getting into a little fight with a beggar in the crowd during Marius and Enjolras’s lines, as well as two men shoving each other at the very beginning of the scene. It’s a disturbing showcase of how poverty can make people act like animals.
Gavroche is very good, both in voice and in attitude.
I remember that the fan reviews of this cast (which I read when I was barely older than Gavroche) often used to make fun of Jason McCann’s vibrato. It is heavy and a little throaty, but not really as bad as I was led to believe. He still has a good, solid voice for the role of Enjolras.
This staging adds a unique detail to the Éponine/Montparnasse interaction by having him give her a rose, only for her to toss it back after she elbows him in the ribs. Then we have him grabbing her again and trying to kiss her neck at the beginning of “The Robbery.” Minor details, but they could definitely spark some Montponine shipping! It’s also interesting on the final “Look Down” chorus, Thénardier yanks Éponine into his lap, to her evident discomfort – I’ve never seen that done before. I wonder, is he just playing the role of caring father to earn sympathy from the people they’re “begging” to, or does this blocking hint at father/daughter incest? The latter would make Thénardier an even darker figure than he is in the novel, let alone in most musical productions!
Joanna’s Éponine makes a good first impression, privately straightening her hair and clothes when she sees Marius, but promptly hiding her girlish insecurity and playing the brash, teasing street rat in front of him. Niklas’s Marius comes off well too, friendly and (when trying to interfere with the robbery) a bit hot-blooded, yet still dignified. Kudus to the way he stands fixated on Cosette after bumping into her, never taking his eyes off her even as she walks away, and then of course protecting her from Montparnasse while the rest of the gang attacks Valjean. (I love that moment in the Nunn/Caird staging!)
Not even Cosette is fully spared from this performance’s rough edge – I’ve never seen a performance onstage where Marius accidentally knocked her flat onto the ground!
Speaking of Zoë’s Cosette, she recognizes Mme. Thénardier! She draws back and hides behind Valjean before Thénardier says “Wait a bit...”! It’s nice to see a performance that doesn’t totally disconnect grown-up Cosette from her childhood. On a shallower note, I love her beautiful long curls too. London Cosette wigs in the early 2000s were so much prettier than US Cosette wigs at the time.
Barry’s Thénardier is excellent, as always, with the perfect balance between humor and slime. I like that he doesn’t cringe nervously away from Javert after “It was me what told you so,” the way most Thénardiers do, but goes on standing and subtly trying to bait Javert into making a deal with him, until his wife finally decides they should leave. Their repeated sycophantic bows and curtsies to Javert as they go are funny too.
Paul’s Javert is nicely sharp and stern, as in the other scenes of his I’ve shared. Very different from his TAC performance as the Bishop.
Overall, this is a scene well done!

‘Queen Sono’ Trailer: Netflix’s First African Original Series Stars a Jason Bourne-Like Heroine
The South African crime drama stars Pearl Thusi ("Quantico") as a special agent tackling dangerous missions.

Netflix has released a trailer for its anticipated first African original series, titled “Queen Sono.” The series represents the streaming giant’s ongoing push into the African continent — a still relatively untapped source of talent and content.
“Queen Sono” is a South African crime drama created by actor and director Kagiso Lediga, starring Pearl Thusi (“Quantico”) as a Jason Bourne-like operative who tackles dangerous missions while contending with personal challenges.
Thusi is joined in front of the camera by Vuyo Dabula, Sechaba Morojele, Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga, Rob Van Vuuren, Kate Liquorish, Khathu Ramabulana, Enhle Maphumulo, Abigail Kubeka, Connie Chiume, Otto Nobela and James Ngcobo. The series was ordered for a six-episode first season by Netflix in December 2018, with Lediga as executive producer alongside Tamsin Andersson. Lediga and Tebogo Malope directed all six episodes.
The first season is set to be released on Netflix in its entirety on February 28.
