♫ 25 Or 6 To 4 ♫ (Redux)
I haven’t played this one for a couple of years, and I was reminded yesterday when I played ♫ Saturday In The Park ♫ that this is the favourite Chicago song of many of my readers, so it seemed logical to give it another whirl tonight! This song has a strange title, and an equally strange history, but I love, love, love the horns in it. Released in 1970, this song was written by Robert Lamm,…

Jim Peterik & World Stage - Roots & Shoots Vol 2
Release Date: 9 Aug 2024

Jim Peterik & World Stage's new album, 'Roots & Shoots Vol.2', presents Jim’s collaborations with Mike Reno, Jason Scheff, Toby Hitchcock, The Ides of March, Cathy Richardson (Jefferson Starship), and Neil Donnell (of Chicago).
Through the years, Jim has written or co-written some of rock's most memorable songs, in particular, "Vehicle" by The Ides Of March (on which he was lead vocalist), "Eye Of The Tiger," "The Search Is Over," "High On You," and "I Can't Hold Back”. He has penned hits for .38 Special such as "Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up In You," "Fantasy Girl," and "Rockin' Into The Night" as well as "Heavy Metal" with Sammy Hagar, and many, many more.
World Stage, a concept rooted in musical and spiritual collaborations among artists and friends, is the best representation of Jim Peterik's truly outstanding musical legacy and a testament to his songwriting abilities as one of the true wizards of melodic rock.
With the 'Roots and Shoots' albums, the Chicago-based artist offers a new concept where he presents his work equally split between Roots (classic rock stars) and Shoots (emerging rock stars).
'Volume 1,' released earlier this year, featured Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon), Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Don Barnes (.38 Special), and Mark Farner (Grand Funk) together with phenomenal new talents such as Colin Peterik (Jim’s son), Ashton Brooke Gill, Paul Childers, Leslie Hunt and Mark Mackay among others.
Jim says, "As I review this list of songs and incredible artists who participated in 'Roots & Shoots Vol. 2,' I feel such gratitude. The combination of established classic rock stars and brilliant rising stars is beyond my wildest dreams. I wrote or co-wrote all these songs inspired by the unique musical gifts of each and every attempt."

25 Or 6 To 4
In 1986, the band Chicago found themselves at a bit of a crossroads as a band. Their lead singer, whose songwriting and drive had allowed them to have a couple of massive hit albums in the first half of the 1980s, Peter Cetera, had wanted to record a solo album, and this led to his acrimonious departure from the group. The band sought to replace him with another singer–one Jason Scheff, who sang…

Rock Star! Jason Scheff’s got the chops, the voice, the lineage, the career, and the hair! And I’m not sure he could be a more lovely, gracious, humble guy. As if thirty years with Chicago weren’t enough, Jason takes us through that experience from the rumors, the auditions, the close race, getting it, the faux pax, righting it big time, the glories of it, the joys, to why he left three decades later.
We started with his dad, the iconic bassist, Jerry Scheff, who’s played with countless legends and is one himself. Jason told amazing stories about Jerry and the Fifth Dimension, Elvis, and The Doors. Mind-blowing, and fantastic!
He spoke of some of his other champions and heroes, his mother, a singer, who made him a pro at 16, Elton John, Bobby Caldwell, Robert Lamm, getting sober, Bill Champlin, David Foster, Tamara Champlin, the all-stars Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz, and Joey Molland with whom he performed The Beatles White Album, my lord, do I want to see the replay of that! Generation Radio (I butchered that) the supergroup Jason put together with Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, with Deen Castronovo of Journey, who returned there, now replaced by superstar drummer Steve Ferrone.
Jason spoke of his love and devotion to his beloved Tracy and their kids, the hardships and losses they’ve endured and weathered together, and they’re great like for each other. Having just had the great good fortune to see Jason perform at Summerfest and then meet his bride, I got to witness this rockstar in action and then bear witness to what a fabulous couple they are.
Jason and I talked for well over two hours and it felt like a minute. What a great, great, time, and… he sang… just a little, but still! I loved every moment and can’t wait to hear about the next chapters, and hear and see them performed, as well.

Album Review: Joey Molland - Be True to Yourself
Thirty-three years after the fact, Joey Molland has made the sequel to George Harrison’s Cloud Nine.
Be True to Yourself is the Badfinger frontman’s first solo LP in nearly a decade and finds him mixing elements of his own band with Beatlesque flourishes and ELO-inspired harmonies while producer Mark Hudson takes his sonic inspiration from Jeff Lynne and adds the horns and strings Harrison so loved. The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz and Chicago’s Jason Scheff, Molland’s bandmates on the White Album-centric It Was 50 Years Ago Today tour, plus Wings’ Steve Holley and Julian Lennon - who shot the cover - make cameos.
The result is 10 inoffensive, if overly simplistic, power-pop tracks that rhyme lightning with frightening, down with around and true with you and borrow heavily from Molland’s past, even inserting an Easter egg from “No Matter What” inside “All I Want to Do” and copping elements of “Eleanor Rigby” on the title track. The only thing that makes Be True to Yourself sound contemporary - it certainly isn’t the 20-something love stories of “Rainy Day Man” or “I Don’t Wanna Be Done with You” - is the rasp that’s developed in Molland’s voice.
“All I Do is Cry,” which lifts a a bit of rhythm from David Bowie’s “Boys Keep Swinging” and the Ringo-inspired rockabilly of “Shine” are the highlights; however, only die-hards - and there are many - are likely to consider Be True to Yourself essential listening.
Grade card: Joey Molland - Be True to Yourself - C+

♫ 25 Or 6 To 4 ♫ (Redux)
A couple of nights ago I played another Chicago song, Hard to Say I’m Sorry, and at least three people commented that their favourite song by Chicago is 25 Or 6 To 4. Well … when you guys speak, what else could I do but play it for you? So, back by popular demand … This song has a strange title, and an equally strange history, but I love, love, love the horns in it. Released in 1970, this…

todd rundgren, agent of chaos...all photos taken by me! if you haven’t seen the It Was Fifty Years Ago Today tour, DO IT. It’s Micky Dolenz, Todd, Christopher Cross, Jason Scheff (Chicago), and Joey Molland (Badfinger) being absolute legends while performing the Beatles’ white album (PERFECTLY) with a few of their own songs thrown in. Pure perfection.
