📩 Simblr question of the day: A non-sims simblr question/s! Besides Sims, what other games do you play and what platforms do you like to play on? (PC, Console, Mobile...) What would genre/s do you tend to lean towards? (FPS, Sandbox, Multiplayer, Simulation, etc.)
Bonus! If a game has character customization, do you like to make a completely new character everytime or do you like to use the same OC/Sim?
I don't play many games! There are a few that though that I enjoyed a lot in the past like Unturned, Stardew Valley, Attack on Titan 2, Pokemon, and Mario Kart. The only other game I've truly loved as much as (and as long as) The Sims is Jet Set Radio Future <3 Here's a video I found on YouTube of some gameplay from it:
youtube
It looks like just a fun little rollerblading game, but it was SO much more than that!! It was revolutionary and heavily shaped who I am today. The main villain of the game is Rokkaku Goji, who owns an enterprise and used both his political influence and money to buy the police department. He started the "Rokkaku Law" and is trying to stop the revolution of freethinkers. You play as members of a group called the GG's whose mission is to stop Rokkaku, the police, and to retake their turfs from other groups. All they use are spray cans to achieve their mission, but the spray cans symbolize freedom of speech and freedom of protest. Jet Set Radio Future has so much love put into it. It blends together the hip-hop, techno, rock scenes beautifully. The style, character designs, and sense of community are inspiring. It taught me at a young age to never back down on what I believe in and how important self-expression is.

Capstone Research Week 2
Old Technology vs New Technology
Where is the spot in history where graphics in video games superseded gameplay?
I believe that gameplay & graphics working in tandem to create innovative and fun games peeked in the sixth generation (late 90’s - early 2000’s) of consoles (Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, OG Xbox)
How would games meant to be played with a controller (2D/3D) translate to VR games? (ex: Pavlov, Zombie survival-type games, etc.)
The transition from 2D to 3D is also important to not as it showed how developers had to get creative when transitioning a video games gameplay loop to work in 3D with new hardware (ex: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pac-man, Sonic, etc.)
Aesthetics (AKA a game’s style) vs Graphics - How higher polygon counts and prettier visuals don’t necessarily make a game better
Great video by Extra Credit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oK8UTRgvJU
Graphics are made to observe the aesthetics - Examples of games with great aesthetic design - Jet Set Future Radio,Battleblock Theater, Super Monkey Ball

Games with not so great aesthetic design - Killzone 2, Golden Axe Beast Rider, Most game remasters that miss the mark on what made the original work well (ex: Silent Hill HD Collection, Sonic DX Directors Cut)
Are video game remasters really necessary? Are these remakes good at bringing old games to a new audience or are they a sign of companies becoming lazy and unoriginal? (Just want to make quick cash-grabs)
Another great video on remasters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZdiPdn-JWY
Aesthetics should always be prioritized over graphics. The sixth generation of games is my favorite as I feel like there is a good balance between innovation and quality as many of the best games created in the early 2000’s are still going strong today with their respective franchises
Control & Video Games
Does giving less control in games a good thing depending on what type of game your playing? (lower skill ceiling, physics-based controls) Do multiplayer games become more fun the less control you have over your player (ex: Fall guys, Human Fall Flat)
Are building in pre-set difficulty options a good idea for games to make them more accessible, or do they make players feel like theyre “playing the game wrong” if player on a lower difficulty? (i.e. not playing the game as intended - this can go both ways for difficulty - if you give the option to make the game too harder players might get frustrated and quit early)
Is there a good way to make a game that’s competitive by nature fun casually for all players? (ex: FPS games like CS:GO or Call of Duty, Fighting games like Street Fighter/Tekken)
Do giving players unique/unconventional controls for a video game create a more unique and fun experience or is it more likely to make the game less accessible/frustrating and make them wish they were using a normal controller instead? (Ex: VR games, Arcade games with track balls → Marble Madness/Centiped, Racing games with steering wheels, etc.)
Video on Celestse’s Assists Mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NInNVEHj_G4&list=PLc38fcMFcV_vvWOhMDriBlVocTZ8mKQzR
Difficulty in Video games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4_auMe1HsY
Personally, I believe that games would be better off giving players the option of selecting the difficulty depending on who the game is targeted towards. If the game is geared more towards older players there should be less need for difficulty options while for games made for younger players, I think it should be recommended.
Exploring the Past
How does our past and heritage relate to us and make us who we are?
Because of our background does that mean that we are born to like and dislike certain things? Could some of our favorite things to do be related to our genetics somehow?
Does things like colorblindness always stem from your parents or could they also somehow be related to your siblings or ancestors?
Is it possible to be born with something that was never inherited from your family tree?
Why you love/hate certain food: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKiE8Lp2Xm8
How you inherit certain things from your parents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71X7a8eu73k
My mom always ate chocolate when she was pregnant with me and I’ve always been a huge fan of chocolate. It makes me wonder if there are other things that happened before my birth that had a big impact on how I developed from a young age.
I think that the research I've gotten so far is a good starting point for my senior project. Hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to find more sources and formulate a plan going forward as to what exactly I want to create for Capstone.

"What if?" My Pitch for the Dreamcast 2
So after the bird app got bought by a rich moron, I got to thinking: what company would I impulsively buy if I had more money than common sense? I mean I wouldn't, I'd probably try and end world hunger or something but if there was anything left I'd just buy SEGA.
Like, for a laugh.
This started out as a design exercise for coming up with a launch title library but I got carried away...
So here's my plan:
The Actual Console
I think I'd like to honour VMU of the original Dreamcast and seeing Sony's recent announcements, we wouldn't be the only ones hopping on the Nintendo Switch Bandwagon.
The Actual console could stand to be a bit more powerful than the Switch but it doesn't have to be a top of the line behemoth. focus on making it fun, rather than powerful, thats how Nintendo sold a buttload this generation.
Launch Titles
Sonic Adventure 3
Ok, so right off the bat this one is a bit tricky.
Let me be clear: I LOVED Sonic The Hedgehog when I was a kid, but I'm sorry, I'm beginning to think there has never actually been a good Sonic game. Even my favourite ones haven't aged gracefully. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are a bit crap, I think we can all agree there. I love them games but the lack of polish on display, considering its SEGA's flagship title, is inexcusable. And since a SEGA console needs to ship with a "mainline" Sonic game (we've seen what happens when it doesn't), I say we go with Sonic Adventure 3 but maybe, like... good?
The idea of a 3D, momentum-based mascot platformer isn't a bad one. In fact, it's kind of a resurging genre in certain indie dev circles.
Twitter user @Cornf_Blue has been developing what looks like the best Sonic Adventure game Sonic Team never made. Actually, let's just hire this dude to run the project.
I'd also refer you to Spark The Electric Jester.
IT CAN BE DONE.
I'm not going to go into too much detail about my idea for SA3 cause I might do another "What If?" post specifically about that at some point but basically, here's the gist of it:
3 Playable Characters are Sonic, Tails & Knuckles
Stages connected by a hub world the player can explore as they like in SA1 but make it bigger and more open to exploration like Sonic Frontiers
3 Kinds of stages: Sonic "speedy" stages, Tails shooty mech stages and Knuckles treasure hunting stages like in SA2 (but keeping it to 3 characters instead of 6 so the team isn't spread itself thin and can focus on delivering quality over quantity).
Special challenge modes like Boss Rush, Speedrun mode etc..
In fact, just put in a bunch of speedrun-friendly features and modes.
Chao Garden! (but more on that later)
Power Stone 3

You need a big, fun multiplayer game in your launch titles and what's more fun than a 4 player fighting game with items and (kind of) platforming elements? It'd be fun to have a big co-op story mode and an online lobby system for multiplayer matches, but mostly, if you've got more than one kid and you're buying them a console for Christmas or whatever, this is the game you'll want to get with it.
Jet Set Radio: Legends of Tokyo-To

Another SEGA IP that started on the Dreamcast, this game was just a ton of fun. The game had a VERY distinct 1999/2000 timestamp on it and I think we're juuuust starting to see the nostalgia wave from that period swelling, so instead of going to the future like the game's sequel, it continues immediately after the plot of the first one. Get Hideki Naganuma, Cibo Matto, Guitar Vader and the rest of the gang back to do the soundtrack, keep the cool cel shading art style BUT make it an open-world game, having all of Tokyo-To available to roam around in, with different gangs controlling different territories, skating and tagging challenges, customizable art (players can make their own tags), and a faction system with rival NPCs (kind of like the nemesis system in those Lord of The Ring games but with graffiti instead of murdering). Heck, get the folks who did Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to make it.
Phantasy Star Online II

So it turns out this game already exists! And it's free to play! I didn't know that before I started making this post but honestly, that's perfect. If there's already a community of players, however small, that's already a lot of the legwork out of the way. Get some crossplay in there and you're set! Imagine getting the new console and your launch title but then, on the home menu, you see Phantasy Star Online II available to download for free! Old school players can enjoy the influx of new blood, revitalizing the game with a massive story event like new colonies being discovered or something, to explain the arrival of all the new players.
Crazy Taxi 3

YAHYAHYAHYAHYAH!
Everybody loves Crazy Taxi, there'd be something wrong with you if you didn't. Honestly, there's not much I'd do in terms of changing up the formula except maybe add a company management element to it, like you're trying to build a little taxi service where the main characters work. Upgrading cars, drumming up business and expanding to new areas. Just something to balance out the relentless fast-paced arcade gameplay. Online leaderboards for challenges and a local multiplayer with a versus mode (see who makes the most money) and a co-op mode (try to reach a set goal together) too, for good measure.
Bayonetta 4

Bayonetta isn't an OG Dreamcast title but IS currently an extremely successful franchise that would absolutely help sell some units on launch. I'm putting it in here because it's published by SEGA so I guess it's technically their IP? But it's also a Nintendo exclusive so I don't know how that would work. Platinum Games has a 4 contract deal with SEGA, but whatever, for this little exercise, pretend SEGA keeps the publishing rights to all their stuff as they move back into making consoles.
Virtua Tennis Pro

So we need a sports title in our launch library and I think it should be Vitrua Tennis. EA Sports games aren't exclusive anymore so you would eventually your FIFAs and whatnot, but it'd be nice to have a proper SEGA sports game again. For this one though, it would have a big, cinematic NBA 2K17 style where you're a rising young tennis star on your way to the top, singing deals, beating rivals etc... Get some competitive online multiplayer in there too of course.
Skies of Arcadia: Dusk

I've always loved the idea of Skies of Arcadia, a big, bright and colourful swashbuckling adventure, and you need one of those in your launch library, but I only played a little bit of the GameCube version unfortunately.
That doesn't matter cause I think I know exactly what to do with this one. Make a traditional RPG title, honouring the franchise's heritage BUT, since we now know how to make a fun pirate game thanks to Assasins's Creed IV: Black Flag, we add in the ship boarding/crew capturing mechanics from that game! So imagine you have the trusty, old-school dungeon crawling/battle systems when you get of your ship but you can get back in and sail through the skies, looting other airships and slowly building your fleet!
Chao Garden
Kinda like Nintendo Land but with Chaos!
Remember the Mii characters in Nintendo consoles? What if they were cute instead of creepy? Every console would have a Chao Garden where the player would create, customise and raise their own Chao. That Chao would also serve as the player's online avatar when connecting with friends and shopping in the SEGA store or whatever.
Players would be able to meet other Chaos, have them compete in minigames and lots more. Essentially the SA2 Chao garden but online. And of course, this would also connect to our Sonic Adventure 3 Chao Garden.
Obviously, this would extend to the console's portability function, like how the 3DS could actively search for the profiles when the user would walk around with it, letting you meet other Chaos!
Make a mobile app for it too so you can check in on your Chao.

tuesday again 8/9/22
this time next week i will be free from the video game data mines. do i have anything else lined up yet? no :)
listening jovian by artisan. i opened the wretched clock application to view a short film of a buff woman my sister procured for me, and this was in the first couple videos on the main page or whatever. a very cool jet set radio/cowboy bebop/future jazz sound with an elevator music interlude???!? i adore this. i want it to be out now.
so i went and listened to all his other stuff, which is very different. jovian is my favorite, big gustav horst The Planets suite vibes, mostly i think it sounds like a point-and-click adventure game about a generation ship with elves.
-
reading not far enough into The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett to have real opinions, but i adore the movie so i have high hopes. this was one of my new year's eve movies- every new year's eve i start a new-to-me black and white movie around 1130 so im still watching it as it turns into the new year. the thin man (1934, dir Van Dyke) was one of those movies. top five black and white movie for me honestly
-
watching watched Angel and the Badman (1947, dir Grant). this one, like High Noon and Shane, succeed bc they don't super need to be a western. by that i mean the very barebones plot stands on its own. what a hopeful, if at times trite, little film!
any time we are not on a soundstage it feels like a movie from about a decade earlier, what with its shot and framing choices. like ENORMOUS serial vibes (like the types of movie Roy/Lee Pace does stunts for in The Fall) as people and horses scramble down various slopes to stirring music. people fall into some water from a height. there's a plot relevant waterfall. that kind of thing. did like this bit very much, which is far, far less homoerotic in context. this was a perfectly adequate little movie but i don't feel the need to ever rewatch it
how'd i come across this: dunno. definitely not one i watched with my dad growing up. i think it keeps popping up as like a Good American Western and i want to encourage my library to add more westerns to their streaming service.
-
playing hey remember when i said i liked playing that goofy little zombie mobile game state of survival bc i didn't have to talk to anyone in order to do the multiplayer part? well that little group of players dissolved, and holy fucking shit everyone on the specific server i am on is fucking insane. it's not a baby gamer thing bc a lot of people are talking about their spouses, and it's not even really a classic gamer toxicity thing, there's just so much fucking catty backstabbing? absolutely exhausting. i don't seem to be able to change servers :( but i have been playing this on and off for about a month and bought exactly one two dollar "unlock something permanently" slot so it's not a huge loss if i need to find a new "make the numbers go up" game. absolutely bizarre little player ecosystem in this game tho.
-
making going to be extremely late with all the yee.hawgust stuff this month bc it is very hot out and i am very busy :(
also i don't like saying that i impulse bought a pet, bc i do have a perfectly good cycled ten gallon tank, it's just that the betta fish i walked out of the store with is So Small and cannot be in the ten gallon tank. i need to be able to find it and make sure it's eating. this has unlocked a sidequest of Locate Brine Shrimp (100x) because this tiny creature does not recognize crushed pellets as food and is too small for finely chopped bloodworms. i am hoping that in about 24h it WILL recognize crushed pellets as food and is simply stressed the fuck out. which, fair.

I Played Kingdom Hearts When I was Seven and It Changed My Life Forever
I grew up with two brothers who were very into video games. Our household was part of the Nintendo 64 era and later, part of the first generation of XBOX users. I grew up watching my brothers play games and it was one of the best parts of my childhood.
Notice I said watching.
Oh, I played too. We would do multiplayer matches or fight each other in Soul Caliber (those were the days!) and occasionally I would get absorbed by Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, or Jet Set Radio Future (still one of the best XBOX games ever). But when first person shooters became the new craze, I found my skills were lacking, and I learned over time that I’m not a gamer. The challenge of gaming doesn’t thrill me like it does other people. I was more content watching my brothers play than taking the controller for myself.
So I’ll state for the record: I’m not a gamer, even if I have a big appreciation for games. So then, how is it that one of my favorite things in the world is a video game?
Because Kingdom Hearts is that good.
I first played Kingdom Hearts when I was seven. My brother’s friend let us borrow his game and his PlayStation 2, and when my brother told me the game was related to Disney my ears perked up. But this is how he described it to me:
“It’s Disney, and you run around with Donald Duck and Goofy, and I think you’d like it.”
From that description, I pictured a Disney theme park game where you run around with Disney mascots and take care of the theme park. That was literally my expectation. So I went into this game BLIND.
I’ll never forget the moment I started playing. It was a quiet morning and my siblings were still asleep so I had the house to myself. I got out the PS2 for the first time, having never used it before, and put the game in. And then the opening cinematic started playing.
For the whole opening, I had no idea what I was seeing but my eyes were glued to the screen and sirens were going off in my head. It was the exquisite CGI, the invigorating music, and the mysterious content of the video that swept me off my feet. (And I remember thinking Sora and Riku were girls at first. Ha!)
By the end of the opening I still wasn’t sure what I was playing, I wasn’t even used to playing RPGs, but I was hooked.
I’m sure many other fans have similar stories. Most of us started playing Kingdom Hearts when we were kids, but now we’re adults and we’re still playing it, because Kingdom Hearts isn’t just a game, it’s an experience.
I never did complete KH1 the first time. I got stuck on fighting Maleficent and moved straight on to Kingdom Hearts II. (Skipping the KH1 ending and Chain of Memories - the nerve of me!)
But playing Kingdom Hearts II was a whole new adventure. If Kingdom Hearts is the game that got me intensely hooked, Kingdom Hearts II is the game that made me a fan for life.
And don’t worry, I went back and beat KH1 after completing KH2. And my goodness, I was blown away AGAIN. You’d think the spoilers in KH2 would have prepared me for that sucker punch of an ending. They didn’t.
One of my favorite things about the series is that KH1 and KH2 are complete as a set. You can play just those games (as I did) and get a full experience. In fact, when I finished KH2 I thought that was the end of the game. It wasn’t until a year or two later that I learned a third game was coming. KH1 and KH2 fit so well together, they gave you the full Kingdom Hearts experience and if it had ended there I would have been completely satisfied.
But more games came. And the story continued.
And it was meant to be, because if the game had ended, the journey would have been so much shorter. Kingdom Hearts has become more than just a game for me, it’s become a life long experience. There’s no other fictional work I’ve loved this much for this long.
I’ve never found all the treasures or beat the game in proud mode (not a gamer, remember?) but it doesn’t change how important these games are to me. And here’s a secret: I’ve never played all the spin-offs. (I didn’t have money for three portable consoles, don’t judge me. I’m slowly catching up.)
But if stories are my passion in life, Kingdom Hearts was the first story that blew my mind, and over ten years later there’s nothing that can quite compare to it.
So now there’s only one question that bears asking: Are you ready for Kingdom Hearts III?

It turned into the second-ever western designed game to be given a perfect score in the Western video game magazine Famitsu.
